Draymond Green joined TNT and immediately chose violence against Charles Barkley. Steak Shapiro and Sandra Golden break down why this "bush league" shot at a legend fell completely flat and made for the most awkward TV of the playoffs.
Transcript
00:00Speaking of TNT and Ernie Johnson Jr., this has gone viral.
00:04Draymond Green is a controversial figure for sure.
00:07He was in an absolute smack talk with Austin Rivers.
00:11Do you see any of that?
00:12Austin Rivers made one little comment about how he shouldn't have been commenting.
00:17He said something in a long podcast.
00:19Draymond said about Steve Kerr, they never once drew up a play for him.
00:23Yes, he said, he's been great for me, but I don't know.
00:28We should also admit the guy's never called a play for me.
00:32It was a backhanded shot, but it wasn't a huge shot.
00:36And Austin Rivers' comment was, Draymond's a great player, blah, blah, blah.
00:39But, you know, please, Steve Kerr's job was not to call plays for a guy that really is not a
00:45player that you look at offensively and say we need to run stuff for him.
00:50Yeah, he literally said there's a reason he's open.
00:53No one's guarding him.
00:54But you're right.
00:55Dude, he went all in nuclear on Austin Rivers.
00:58Austin Rivers shot back at him.
01:00And then last night, he is on set, and they're asking him about the Warriors and the fact that that
01:07run looks like it is over.
01:09Eliminated in the first round, right?
01:12Never makes it in the playing game.
01:13They won the first one, then lost the second one.
01:15And they're kind of talking about have the goals shifted in terms of how you look at Golden State's opportunity
01:22to win a title or what your own goals are.
01:25And he takes an opportunity to put out as Bush League a shot on Charles Barkley.
01:33Here's how it plays out last night on TNT.
01:36Always ends.
01:37Sports, listen, sports are for young people.
01:41You hope to have a great long career, but sports, nobody wins when they're 37, 38.
01:48I bet you said what you said.
01:50I didn't want to hear if he believes what you're talking.
01:53Kenny Smith.
01:53Yeah, I mean, I think the goal is just to not look like you in the Houston Rockets uniform.
01:58Yeah.
01:59It's ultimately the goal for us.
02:01Like, we don't want to.
02:02What does that look like?
02:04Did you see it?
02:06I'm just asking.
02:07I saw it.
02:08I mean, so, you know, we're always going to try to compete.
02:13When you win championships, the goal.
02:15So, essentially, looks at Charles Barkley on the set of the greatest sports television show in history.
02:22Because of Charles Barkley.
02:23Let's not pretend.
02:25Ernie, Charles, Kenny, and Shaq.
02:27Shaq wasn't even there.
02:28It was Charles and Kenny.
02:29Kenny's great.
02:30Charles is the star.
02:31And Ernie's the star.
02:32Right?
02:33To sit in that seat, Shaq's seat, look at Barkley and go,
02:36the goal is to not look like you on the Houston Rockets.
02:39I mean, they bust his chops, those other two, about not winning a title, not having the ring.
02:45Right?
02:45Charles Barkley is a superior player to Kenny Smith.
02:47And Kenny Smith was a really good player.
02:48But Charles Barkley is a Hall of Famer.
02:52I mean, what is that?
02:54By Draymond Green, who, by the way...
02:56I was surprised Barkley didn't come back.
02:57Or they didn't let him come back.
02:59It was a very awkward kind of cringe moment.
03:02It was exactly what it was.
03:03And let me tell you something.
03:05Everybody is all in on Draymond.
03:08Hammer.
03:08And by the way, the Charles Barkley's referring to averaged 18 points and 12 rebounds in the playoffs
03:15in his final years with Houston.
03:18So, this was not...
03:20Sorry, Dominique.
03:21Dominique Wilkins on the Orlando Magic, which people don't even remember.
03:25Or Dominique on the Celtics, which actually his numbers were okay.
03:27Do you remember that he was on Boston and Orlando?
03:30Right, Dominique?
03:31Not to mention the Clippers, right?
03:33Then he goes to Greece, like, the end of his career.
03:35Charles was 18 and 12.
03:38You're a guest on that show.
03:40Like, what's up, dude?
03:41That's why I actually...
03:42Why is Shaq is...
03:44Those four is literally perfect TV.
03:46Right, right.
03:46Why are you deciding...
03:47If anything, maybe add him to it.
03:49You weren't the only one...
03:50Where was Shaq?
03:51You weren't the only one to say that on social.
03:53Like, why is he on there anyway?
03:55Why do you immediately thrust him into the number one...
03:58By the way, there's a lot of guys that are the backup guys.
04:01Jalen Rose, Chris Webber...
04:03I mean, Draymond's fine, but I don't see...
04:06It's not broke.
04:07Somebody in television...
04:08Well, I mean, listen, they're just giving Shaq a night off.
04:10It's not like he's taking Shaq's job.
04:12I mean...
04:12It's the playoffs.
04:13He's about to have a whole season off.
04:14I don't understand this.
04:16Playoffs are going to be going on for a long time.
04:18I want to ask Ernie, like, did that get super awkward last night?
04:21Well, yeah, I think what we'll ask Ernie is, is he aware of the outcry?
04:25Because it is an out...
04:26Just don't do that, man.
04:28Right.
04:28I mean, don't do that to Charles.
04:30Charles Barkley is the nicest person out in public of any superstar I've ever seen in my life.
04:38Period.
04:39It begins and ends with him.
04:42And these fake B-level, C-level celebrity-in-their-mind athletes that carry around with an entourage
04:50and have to hide in the back of a bar or restaurant or have security move people away from them,
04:56Charles Barkley walks in to name the restaurant or bar,
05:00says hello to everybody in the place,
05:02and then tells the GM or the bartender everybody free drinks for the next hour.
05:07If he hasn't done it once, he's done it 300 times in Atlanta, the cuckoo room, right?
05:12Yeah.
05:13That's just who he is.
05:15Spreads his love and his money, and he's a great guy.
05:17Don't get unsent and do that.
05:18That's a friend of ours.
05:20That bothered me.
05:21So I don't know how folks feel about that, but...
05:24Oh, the internet, the Twitter's having a field day with it.
05:26Hey...
