00:00Sabah UMNO needs to rebrand itself as the strategic partner that champions local aspirations
00:06instead of trying to reassert its dominance in the state, says an analyst.
00:12Shahruddin Awang Ahmad of University Malaysia Sabah said local sentiment is a growing factor
00:17in the state's political landscape, as evident in the last state election.
00:22At the polls held on November 29 last year,
00:25Kabungan Rakyat Sabah and Warisan secured the most number of seats,
00:30while Barisan Nasional only managed six.
00:33PKR lost two traditional seats and DAP was wiped out.
00:39Shahruddin said UMNO needs to dial down its push to reassert its dominance in Sabah
00:44as it will help position them as a strategic partner and would not be seen as an external threat.
00:50He added UMNO must bolster its cooperation with local parties
00:55and offer a more inclusive and realistic development agenda.
