00:00Hey, Shabbat Shalom, brothers and sisters. Welcome back. I thank you again for joining me today.
00:05Today I want to do a little, talk about a little movie I watched the other day.
00:08It was called Six Days in August. It was a sort of a history of Mormonism,
00:17but it sort of like focuses on Brigham Young, the second president of the Latter-day Saints,
00:23the ones that went off to Utah. It was, you know, I'm a former Mormon, of course, and everything.
00:29And I still, I like history, and, you know, Mormonism was part of American history in the old West,
00:36the old 19th century, and I found the movie quite entertaining, quite interesting.
00:44I mean, they didn't have any high-class celebrities on it or anything.
00:50It didn't seem like a real big-budget movie.
00:53It just seemed like a down-to-earth, honest movie telling a story that these fine young actors and actresses.
01:01And I like the man who played, the boy, the young man who played Brigham Young.
01:07I think his name was Wilson.
01:08And then Emma was played by an actress named Cammie.
01:16I think Cammie.
01:18But anyways, I was, you know, I read some books recently on the history of Mormonism,
01:27and I could say that it's kind of accurate, but, you know, it leaves out a lot of stuff, you
01:33know,
01:34maybe some touchy stuff about the history, what the Mormons believed, what they might have, you know,
01:40what doctrines that might be taboo, like plural marriages and things like that.
01:46I found it very interesting.
01:48And this movie, I think it came out in 2024, so it's relatively a new movie.
01:55But it also has, it talks about, you know, it has an actor who played Joseph Smith in it,
02:00and then you had Sidney Rigdon.
02:03He's another church member up there.
02:07There was Heber, Kimball.
02:10There's quite a few of them.
02:12I can't name them all right now off memory, but, you know, I knew who they were.
02:16I just, well, I didn't know who they were, you know, because of the actors,
02:19but when I heard the names, they'd call their, you know, call them whatever,
02:22if it was Sidney here or Heber here or Hiram here or something.
02:26I knew who they were.
02:27I just didn't know what actor was playing what character at the time when I first started watching it.
02:32But it also talks about when Brigham Young, he meets the prophet, or Joseph Smith.
02:40It talks about, you know, talks about Brigham.
02:43He got married, lost his wife roughly, what, around a decade later.
02:48She passed away, and he's left with a couple kids, and, you know, he gets married again,
02:54and then he goes on all these missions and tours and whatever else.
02:58But, yeah, but it cuts to, you know, it goes to Kirtland, talks about Kirtland, you know,
03:03certain things going here, and then it'll cut to that, and it'll go to the far, you know,
03:08over Mississippi, the Missouri area.
03:10Talking about that, it cuts off, but it, you know, entangles Brigham Young.
03:16And then when Joseph Smith and Hiram were gunned down at Carthage, there was a big old power vacuum,
03:25a struggle going on where people wanted to, you know, say, hey, I'm the successor, I'm the successor,
03:30just like Sidney Rigdon.
03:32He tried to go there, and he tried to take over leadership, and Brigham Young,
03:36I think he was out campaigning for Joseph Smith as president, not just about their gospel message, whatever.
03:46But he hurries it up back, and I found it kind of interesting that they had a little, you know,
03:54speech, a little struggle.
03:55It was kind of, I don't know how you say it, it was kind of, I mean, we know how
03:59history turned out,
04:03you know, who led the church after Joseph, and, I mean, the big church here.
04:07There's other splinter groups that went around, like Lehman White, I think he took a group of people,
04:12and he went down to Texas, I think.
04:15Sidney got a hundred, a couple hundred followers, went back to, like, Pennsylvania.
04:22There was this one guy, he wasn't even mentioned involved.
04:26I think they were called the Strangites, can't pronounce the name, but they went up to, like,
04:33I think Wisconsin and everything.
04:34And this guy actually even unearthed some other supposed plates, you know.
04:39Said, oh, this is further confirmation, a new message, a new revelation about whatever.
04:46And then there's other ones.
04:47I think it was William Smith.
04:49I think he might have, Joseph's brother that he got in a fistfight with, last history recorded.
04:55I think he had a small group saying he was a successor, but I think he got in trouble for
05:04inappropriate behavior
05:06with a girl underage or something, and he was wanted for that.
05:10And I think he fled, and I don't think history ever recorded him again or what happened to him.
05:15I don't know.
05:15I could be wrong there, but I just know he got in trouble.
05:19But anyways, I don't want to get off the movie, but the movie was real good.
05:23And, you know, I like the history.
05:25The Old West, the scenery was good.
05:27It's directed fine.
05:29I mean, I liked it.
05:30The actors, they were young, and I don't know any background about any of them, but I think they held
05:38their own.
05:39And, in fact, there's two of the actors, like I mentioned, the one that played Brigham Young,
05:44I think his last name's Wilson, John maybe.
05:48And then the other one was Emma, was Camry.
05:52Well, they're doing something on YouTube right now called Becoming Brigham.
05:56If you look it up, it's like little snippets, like 15-minute snippets here and there about talking about Brigham
06:02Young.
06:03Was he a good leader?
06:03Did he get along with Emma?
06:05What did he think about the martyr at Carthage?
06:09You know, things like that, if you're interested in that.
06:11But, like I said, I'm a former.
06:13I wasn't in the church, but I'm no longer in the church.
06:16But I can still appreciate American history and everything.
06:19Not that I don't believe their doctrines or anything.
06:25I mean, anymore.
06:26I don't believe in that.
06:28But, in many ways, you know, check it out.
06:31You can probably get it free on YouTube.
06:33I don't know.
06:34Check that out.
06:35If you've got Netflix, whatever, if it's on whatever, just check it out.
06:39It's called Six Days in August.
06:43And I think the young man who played Joseph Smith, I think he did a pretty good job, too.
06:50They did make a little reference about polygamy and everything.
06:56He was sitting there watching the Mormon Legion in Nauvoo.
07:01And he's sitting down next to a reporter and a few other people.
07:08And the reporter kind of brings up the doctrine of that.
07:10There's another scene where the actor Joseph, Joseph there, is going to Emma.
07:15And she's out sitting in the backyard.
07:17And she looks really upset.
07:18And her heart looks crushed.
07:20And he makes a little reference.
07:21And you could, that's probably, you know, if you watch it, you'll understand.
07:25But, yeah, that's an interesting movie.
07:27And I, you know, recommend you watch it.
07:31That's all I have to say right now.
07:33Until we meet again, brothers and sisters, peace out and shalom.
