00:00One day, I picked up the Book of Mormon, and I said to my friend, Heber Kimball,
00:05Heber, let's go out to Ohio and see this prophet.
00:08Let's see what he's got to say for himself.
00:11I remember it was about noon, we came up to Joseph Smith's house.
00:16His wife, Emma, came to the door.
00:18Excuse me, ma'am, is this where Joseph Smith lives?
00:21Yes.
00:21We'd like to talk to him, please.
00:24Well, you'll find him out yonder, the other side of the lake, chopping wood.
00:27Thank you, ma'am.
00:31That sounds kind of funny for a prophet to be out swinging an axe.
00:35Don't seem just right.
00:36A prophet will act like a prophet.
00:38You can't expect to build a church if he acts like a farmhand.
00:53Good morning.
00:56How do you do, sir?
00:59I'm Brigham Young.
01:01This is my friend, Heber Kimball.
01:03I'm glad to meet you.
01:04We've come a long ways to see you.
01:06We want to ask you some questions about your church.
01:08Gladly.
01:09I'd like to tell you about it.
01:11Won't you sit down?
01:19What's this about you folks calling yourselves saints?
01:22Well, we believe that any man, dead or alive, who keeps the Ten Commandments is a saint.
01:27You don't pretend to be the Lord himself, do you?
01:29No.
01:30I'm just a mortal man, same as you or your friend here.
01:34Well, this plan of yours you call a united order, what's that?
01:38It's not my plan.
01:40It's the Lord's.
01:41Well, whosoever it is, what is it?
01:45Well, I suppose you'd call it the law of nature.
01:49You see, it's his idea that the land of Zion will be sort of like a beehive.
01:54Like that, that anthill over there.
01:56With everybody doing his share of the work and getting his part of the profits.
02:01A place where everybody will have everything he can eat and use.
02:06There'll be great storehouses to keep food and things in for the sick and the poor, the old folks.
02:13You see, under a brotherhood plan like that, it'll be impossible for any one man to pile up a lot
02:19of goods or have power over his neighbors.
02:22That'll mean there'll be no social distinctions, no caste, no special privileges.
02:28Any more I take it than there is in that anthill over there.
02:32We had it once, but somehow we've all but lost it.
02:36We've got to get back to it again.
02:39Well, that, that sounds all right.
02:41But then there'll always be lazy people, ambitious people.
02:46There'll be some honest ones and some dishonest ones.
02:49But I'm telling you, Brother Brigham, it's a revelation from the Lord.
02:53It's up to us to work it out.
02:56This isn't an easy religion.
02:59Well, I'm not looking for an easy religion.
03:02I'm looking for one I can bring my family up decent in.
03:07Joseph, dinner's ready.
03:10Won't you stay and have dinner with us?
03:13Well, thank you.
03:14We'd be glad to.
03:15All right.
03:17We'll see you next time.
