00:05Training for heavy waters starts outside of the ocean.
00:08Thank you very much for coming up today.
00:10This is our second day of training.
00:13Over several days, some of the locals of the Big Wave community partake in an apnea survival course.
00:19Using your diaphragm is like a muscle.
00:21You have to train the muscle to respond immediately when you need.
00:25Why? Because when you're going to take that 20-foot bomb in the head,
00:27you're not going to think, oh, let me engage my diaphragm.
00:30No, there's no time for that. You've got to engage and go.
00:32This course is designed with one goal in mind,
00:35increase the ability to hold your breath underwater during intense situations.
00:40When your body goes down on an apnea session,
00:42there's nothing in the world that will take your attention away from that person.
00:48Out on the water, the group conducts drills that puts the training into action.
00:52So I'm going to pick up an unconscious victim from the bottom.
00:58Okay, I brought him up.
01:01Now he's on the surface.
01:02I'm going to go from here to here.
01:04Now I'm taking him away from the impact.
01:06So, first hand is about to hit me.
01:08I'm going to go ahead and remove my hand out of here.
01:11Close his mouth. Close his nose.
01:19Only let go of his nose when it's on the surface of the water.
01:24Here we go.
01:25Imparting knowledge into experience is an aspect of Trevor's practice.
01:32Sharpening survival techniques for when life is on the line.
01:37For this part of the course, Trevor enacts an underwater rescue.
01:42In this scenario, the subject has drowned.
01:47Trevor shows the class how to retrieve, handle the impact zone,
01:51and get the person to safety where he can be resuscitated.
01:55That's it. Right on, buddy.
01:57All right.
01:57The course has come to an end.
01:59Life-saving knowledge is now passed on to those who may encounter situations
02:03they have gone through today, especially with another El Nino swell on the horizon.
02:08Always, always, always think safety. Safety is priority.
02:13Put the training in practice.
