00:00Listeners of a certain age will remember the presidential physical fitness tests that were
00:05either your chance to win elementary school glory or your worst nightmare. For me, it was the latter.
00:11Well, President Trump is bringing it back as part of his Make America Healthy Again push.
00:16Today, I sign a proclamation recognizing national youth sports and fitness, and I'll also sign the
00:23very first copy of the new revitalized presidential fitness test award, a certificate in
00:29recognition of achievement of the gold standard of physical fitness.
00:33The original presidential physical fitness test was removed during President Barack Obama's
00:37administration and replaced with the presidential youth fitness program that was part of First Lady
00:42Michelle Obama's Let's Move initiative. Now, that program focused more on health than personal
00:47athletic achievement and performance-based standards. We had the Obama administration,
00:52which phased out this wonderful tradition of physical fitness. Thank you, Barack, very much.
00:59Great job. But we're bringing it back. We're bringing it back.
01:03The OG physical fitness test was, for this millennial right here, something I would rather
01:08die than ever do again. It consisted of running one mile, performing as many sit-ups as possible
01:16in 60 seconds, doing pull-ups or push-ups until failure and a flexibility test. Now, it was launched
01:23by President John F. Kennedy, uncle to current HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. The Kennedys are
01:28apparently very concerned about the nation's fitness levels. Now, resuscitating the presidential
01:33fitness test is something the current president has had on his agenda for a while. Last July, he signed
01:38an executive order re-establishing the test, and yesterday's event restored the awards doled out to the
01:43top test takers.
