00:06It's a tradition for a lot of people to ring the New Year in with a kiss.
00:10It's a time that's supposed to be filled with celebration and joy.
00:14But there's a sinister reality lurking beneath the festivities.
00:18Statistically, New Year's Day is the most violent day for assaults in New South Wales.
00:25Every single minute in the first three hours of the New Year, someone in New South Wales is assaulted.
00:32We usually count down to public holidays, have them circled in our calendar,
00:37but the grim reality is that public holidays can be a dangerous time for a lot of people.
00:43According to Boxar Statistics, people have a higher chance of being assaulted on public holidays,
00:49not only by loved ones, but also by a friend or a stranger.
00:53We think this occurs because friends and family are gathering together and spending more time together.
00:59Sometimes it's periods of increased excitement, anxiety or stress.
01:04And it's also times when there are increases in the consumption of alcohol.
01:10And while alcohol doesn't cause domestic and family violence,
01:13If abuse is present in relationships, increased alcohol consumption will lead to increases in violent incidents occurring.
01:23On Australia Day, there's an 89% increase in non-domestic violence assaults compared to the average day.
01:30In these cases, it's most often assaults between friends or strangers.
01:35On Anzac Day, there's a 78% increase.
01:39Christmas Day is different.
01:40There's an increase in domestic violence assaults, but a decrease in non-domestic violence assaults.
01:46That means there's an increase in family violence and intimate violence,
01:50but a decrease in assaults between strangers and friends.
01:54The combination of alcohol, high emotions, family expectations and free time
01:59turns to days of celebration into days of violence.
02:03We have a spike in the number of people reaching out for support from crisis services
