00:00Then making the decision that they want to take a photo or video of said a scene.
00:04Peaks everyone's curiosity.
00:06Yeah, I was taking a photo of it.
00:08And a slip and slide ride.
00:09Feeling like racing with each other.
00:11Not a good manner of driving for the weather that we have today.
00:15And this is midsummer for you.
00:35Friday night, the witching hour.
00:38And Constable Nick Sharp is no stranger to the bizarre behaviours of motorists.
00:43Tonight is no exception.
00:45With ATOC surveillance picking up a possible dispute on the side of the northwestern.
00:50Do you want to treat us a high risk?
00:51Yeah, A-firm mate. Well, yeah, well do, eh?
00:54ATOC has seen what looks like a knife in the hands of one occupant.
00:57The situation is escalating to a high risk vehicle stop.
01:02Date 12, 5-8.
01:05Whereabouts is the vehicle parked up at the moment?
01:07And how much room is there in the emergency shoulder?
01:10It's just after the Great North on-ramp eastbound.
01:13Nick needs to coordinate with other units to arrive in unison and approach with caution.
01:18I'll meet you at the start of the loop on-ramp.
01:20Then we can both approach together.
01:22For the safety of the public and themselves, the officers will need to be armed.
01:26Gomp's just for, obviously, all nighting.
01:28We'll be armed with this one.
01:30He also needs a description of the weapon.
01:32So it's quite short, quite large, machete type or anything like that.
01:36I'm not going to attend to it, too.
01:40So, yeah, so interesting turn of events again.
01:42We're just off to what is reported to be a breakdown.
01:45And then JTOG CCTV operator has said it looks more like a fight between a person within the vehicle.
01:53It looks like the male has retrieved what appears to be a knife.
01:57So we're going to be contacting a high risk vehicle stop.
02:00Safety comes in numbers.
02:02Only metres away from the incident, Nick meets a second patrol car.
02:06Nick spots the stationary vehicle.
02:09Gomp's 5-8-5-1.
02:11We're just going 10-7 with our vehicle now.
02:13An unassuming Ford hatchback.
02:15But looks can be deceiving and Nick's not taking any chances.
02:20JTOG, what side of the vehicle did the male with the knife get into?
02:24Suddenly, one of the occupants appears.
02:26He's believed to be the one carrying the knife.
02:29Yeah, occupants, show your hands.
02:32Yeah.
02:33Keep walking towards our direction.
02:35We'll give you further instruction.
02:37Driver, just wait there for now.
02:41Passenger, keep walking towards us, eh?
02:43Just keep walking, yeah.
02:44You're doing all right.
02:44Keep walking towards us.
02:46Driver, stay where you are.
02:47Yeah, you're good.
02:49Passengers, just listen to my voice.
02:50Keep walking back towards the middle of the vehicles.
02:53Okay, we are armed police.
02:54So just stand in the middle there for me.
02:56Yeah, fantastic.
02:57All right.
02:58We've got reports that you've popped a knife into your pocket.
03:02So just keep doing what you're doing.
03:03We're going to approach you.
03:04All right, pop you in for our safety, your safety.
03:07And then we'll move from there, okay?
03:09So don't make any sub-movements.
03:16Auckland, mid-summer, and the weather's packed in.
03:20Constable Tristan Rudden is called to assist with a two-car crash
03:23just past the Khyber Pass off-ramp, State Highway 1.
03:27We have two vehicles which are currently perpendicular across lanes.
03:32I think I was 2-6.
03:33I'm just behind a fire truck about to go 10-7.
03:40Traffic gridlocks as two vehicles block three lanes northbound.
03:44It's not great news for fellow commuters.
03:46So we've only got one lane active here going basically through the middle of the scene.
03:53Hello.
03:54Hey, any injuries?
03:56I'm also a St. John's first responder.
03:58Okay.
04:00I'm just checking them out at the moment.
04:02Oh, good.
04:02I'm just trying to keep track.
04:03Yeah, nice.
04:05Tristan tries to piece together how two Nissen Teeters collided.
04:08A witness may hold the clue.
04:11Whereabouts did you see them speeding?
04:12Before 80k zones.
04:14I thought they were like racing with each other.
04:17When I saw them, one car was on the far right crash,
04:21and another car was in my way.
04:22So I just stopped and made sure they were all good, you know.
04:26But this car was not responding at all.
04:28The driver of the first Nissen is now being treated for serious injuries.
04:32Have you done breath tests?
04:33I haven't done breath tests. He's in the ambulance.
04:36Both drivers need to be tested for alcohol
04:38and have their banged-up Nissans towed.
04:41Multiple units work hard to clear the scene and get traffic flowing.
04:46Incredibly, the family travelling in one of the Nissans are uninjured.
04:50The other driver is not so lucky.
04:52Sounds like he's fishtailed, lost control of the vehicle
04:55and crashed into the back of them and just sent everybody spinning.
04:59And I think he's gone straight into the barrier.
05:01Okay, please.
05:02So yeah, I'm not surprised he won't remember much.
05:05Further questioning by the officers revealed
05:07the motorists did not know each other and were not racing.
05:11The driver of the first Nissan is going to Auckland Hospital for his injuries
05:15and to be tested to see if he was under the influence.
05:19Sounds like one of the vehicles have come in with a bit of speed,
05:22weaving through traffic, cutting other drivers off.
05:24They've lost control and hit into the back of the other car.
05:27Not a good manner of driving for the wet weather that we have today.
05:30And this is mid-summer for you, so...
05:32It's a serious reminder to slow down when the weather's miserable.
05:43Midnight.
05:43North Western Motorway.
05:44And officers are in the middle of a high-risk vehicle stop.
05:48Driver, just wait there for now.
05:50Passenger, keep walking towards us, eh?
05:52So just keep doing what you're doing.
05:53We're going to approach you.
05:55ATOC cameras have captured this man in a dispute
05:58and it's believed he's carrying a knife.
06:02Constable Nick Sharp is detaining one of the occupants.
06:05I'm just going to put you in cuffs for now, okay?
06:07And then we'll get to the bottom of it, okay?
06:08Can I be on your back?
06:09I'm just a person, you know?
06:10Yeah, yeah, nah.
06:11All's good.
06:11There is still one more occupant in the car
06:13and he appears reluctant to leave.
06:16Slowly get out and make your way towards my voice.
06:20Do it now.
06:20Officers try to talk him out of the vehicle.
06:24Yes, come to us, my voice.
06:26But the driver is not making it easy.
06:29Come to us, my voice.
06:31The man is like a jack-in-the-box,
06:33popping in and out of the car.
06:35But on a live motorway and with suspected knives,
06:38this is no game.
06:45On the North Western Motorway,
06:47police have intervened in a dispute.
06:48ATOC has observed this heated interaction on the motorway
06:51and it looks like a knife is involved.
06:54One occupant is in custody
06:55and the officers are trying to apprehend the driver.
07:00Get her out, get her out, get her out, get her out, get her out.
07:19All right, so we can only go on the information that we've got.
07:22It turns out the passenger tried to stop his mate drinking and driving.
07:27Obviously, you're all trying to do the right thing.
07:29Stopping her from driving and you driving there,
07:30but he's obviously not let you either, is he?
07:32Yeah, we do have a little bit of an argument.
07:35Fair enough, fair enough.
07:36Well, I actually got one on him and I took the key out
07:39and he thought he could still drive.
07:41Oh!
07:41I was wondering why he couldn't drive,
07:43so it was because I had the key.
07:45During the disagreement,
07:46this man grabbed the driver's keys.
07:49And that could explain the glint of metal
07:51that ATOC mistook for a knife.
07:58After a quick breath test,
08:00the passenger is free to go and drive home.
08:04The driver, however,
08:05needs to do an evidential breath test back at the station.
08:09Tonight's mess could have been avoided with a taxi.
08:12Good, successful high-risk vehicle stop in the end.
08:14Korokia pins out safely.
08:15There wasn't any knife involved in the end,
08:17however, we went to know that.
08:18Speaking of the passenger,
08:19it appears that the driver shouldn't be driving,
08:22so they've had a bit of a barney with each other.
08:24He's managed to get the key from the driver,
08:26which is potentially what our CCTV operator has seen
08:30and mistaken for the knife.
08:31But in the end,
08:32we've got the driver undergoing EBA procedures
08:34and safe resolution to the job as a whole.
08:41As a motorways officer,
08:43a common call-out is for breakdowns.
08:46On the north-western,
08:48Constable Sam Singh is attending a cooked car.
08:53Hey, man, what's happening?
08:55Run out of the water.
08:56Run out of water?
08:57Is it overheating or...?
08:58No, no, it's just in the water.
09:00Luckily, traffic response has arrived,
09:02but moving on may not be so simple.
09:05All right.
09:10Then Sam spies a couple of kids in the back, unrestrained.
09:14How old are you?
09:16Seven, give me a fist bump.
09:18All righty.
09:18How old are you?
09:20How old are you?
09:21How old are you?
09:21All right, give me a fist bump.
09:22He's got two kids, two young kids in the back,
09:26not properly restrained.
09:27So once he's off the motorway,
09:29we'll have a conversation with him about that as well.
09:31The mechanical breakdown,
09:32they're going to use their car to push his car off the motorway
09:35so he's not blocking any lanes,
09:36not causing any issues.
09:38To ensure the safety of all traffic,
09:40Sam shadows the two cars
09:41until the Mazda's guided
09:42into a less precarious position.
09:46All good, brother?
09:47Much safer here?
09:49Hey, look, all I can say,
09:50it's better to invest a little more
09:52in the baby seats and stuff
09:53because kiddo safety is really important.
09:56It turns out the car seats are with mum,
09:59so Sam decides to educate rather than ticket.
10:02Just consider this as a warning.
10:04I'm not going to give you a fine
10:05because I'd rather have you spend that money
10:07in buying those baby seats.
10:09But even if you look at that,
10:11it's just very dangerous online.
10:13And today is a prime example.
10:14Anything can happen anytime.
10:15Alrighty.
10:16Yes, Sam.
10:17Give me a fist bump.
10:18Yay.
10:19Bye-bye.
10:20Bye-bye.
10:21Now, August, man, good luck with everything.
10:23Go.
10:26A few hours later,
10:27Sam is attending breakdown number two.
10:30This time, it's the two-wheeled variety.
10:33I think that the battery has gone.
10:35The battery's gone?
10:36Yes, and my brother is coming to take me
10:39and take my water bike.
10:41His brother, a landscaper,
10:43no doubt has a trailer
10:44that will get this bike home safe and sound.
10:51Maybe not.
10:54It's a bit of a cushion for your bike.
10:58Being nestled on a bunch of branches
11:00will make a cosy ride home for the bike.
11:02The question is, though,
11:04will it fit?
11:10No-one likes distractions on the motorway,
11:13least of all large ones.
11:15Constable Jess Oligan is attending an incident
11:17that is drawing quite a crowd.
11:19I believe it was called in by a member of the public
11:22as soon as it happened
11:23because it is sort of something to call police for.
11:27Fire out.
11:27Three other units and fire emergency are already on the scene,
11:32drawing more attention from onlookers.
11:34We've got the truck, it's rolled, it's up on the hill.
11:37We've got a big, long skid line going along here.
11:41We'll go and have a chat to the driver
11:43and see if we can get any more information.
11:46Overlooking the scene,
11:47the dazed truck driver is receiving first aid from fire officers.
11:51There's no ambos available at the moment,
11:53so we're just trying to get an ambulance here
11:55and then, if not, figure out how to get this guy to the hospital.
11:58He's got to dislocate his shoulder,
11:59so he obviously needs to be seen.
12:01Jess is keen to hear the truck driver's recollection.
12:25He said he was in the fast lane, he was doing 85,
12:28and he was aware that he was slowing down traffic,
12:30so he's gone to move into lane one of two.
12:32Didn't see that there was a car in his blind spot,
12:35has hit that car, realised,
12:38and then just quickly gone back into lane two.
12:40By doing that, his brakes have locked up,
12:42and then he's just fully lost control.
12:44Thankfully, he didn't collect any cars.
12:47Not only are the fire emergency staff undertaking first aid,
12:50they're also on a rescue mission.
12:53The truck driver has his car keys in the truck.
12:57Obviously, without car keys, he therefore can't drive his car.
12:59And we've been collected.
13:01Good job.
13:04Traffic has slowed down to a crawl in both directions,
13:08and officers need to manage curious motorists
13:10before other crashes occur.
13:12The officer's just seen a driver with her cell phone in her hand
13:16as she was driving to take photos of the truck,
13:18and he's told her to pull over.
13:19Yeah, I was taking a photo of it.
13:21Be on your phone.
13:23You're looking like straight at me when you're coming apart.
13:26Officers also pick up the strong smell of cannabis.
13:29What's your priority?
13:36On State Highway 20, a large truck has clipped a car.
13:40Then I tried to come back on the road,
13:42but my back tire got locked.
13:44Ah, okay.
13:44He's then over-corrected and rolled.
13:47Traffic has backed up on both sides,
13:48and rubber neckers are becoming a major problem.
13:51Yeah, I was taking a photo of it.
13:53And to make it worse, this driver's admitted smoking cannabis.
13:57What's your priority?
13:58Initially, I could see that she had her phone out,
14:00so that's the reason for her stop.
14:01As soon as we got her to open up the window and stuff,
14:04the smell of cannabis came through.
14:07Once we got talking to her and all that kind of stuff,
14:10she handed over a little bag of cannabis.
14:13Atohonets and John arrive to assess the truck driver,
14:15who's been waiting patiently with a suspected dislocated shoulder.
14:19There's a lot of people driving past on their phones.
14:21There's a lot going on here at the scene.
14:23There's a lot of police officers.
14:24There's an ambulance.
14:25There were a lot of fireys.
14:26It is definitely something to look at.
14:28Unfortunately, people are then making the decision
14:29that they want to take a photo or video of said scene.
14:33I've been told by one driver it was so he could upload it onto Facebook.
14:36It doesn't really need to be done.
14:39While Jess is heading back to the patrol car,
14:41another motorist tries to take a photo on their phone.
14:44Your phone was in your hand at your lap,
14:46so I started running after you,
14:47and as I was running after you,
14:48because I'd seen you on your phone,
14:50you then had the phone up filming.
14:52So stop saying you weren't on your phone.
14:54With it leading up to rush hour,
14:55the decision is made to try and relocate the truck tonight.
14:59Traffic, it's fully backed up.
15:00It's absolutely crawling.
15:01So the plan from here is that we're going to wait
15:03till later on tonight when the traffic has fully died down.
15:13We've come back and closed the motorway.
15:15It's time for the process of removing the truck off the motorway
15:18now that it's a lot safer to do so.
15:19The recovery crew need to flip the truck back on its wheels.
15:23We have been shut for 35 minutes now.
15:26They need to make sure that it's mitigated before at least 5am
15:28and the traffic flow does increase for the morning run to work.
15:37But the recovery crew will continue working for hours,
15:41removing the dirt and fixing the barrier.
15:45It was just a small mistake.
15:46We're very lucky that actually no one was hurt.
15:49However, the process to sort it all out and to clean it all up is huge
15:53and it could have quite easily have been avoided.
16:02Constable Sam Sings dealing with his second breakdown of the day,
16:05this one of the garden variety.
16:08The brothers seem to think the van is a TARDIS straight out of Doctor Who.
16:20I'll hold it.
16:21Just that one.
16:26Eventually, defying the laws of physics, they are successful,
16:29much to the surprise of Sam.
16:32Oh, well, pretty creative, I would say.
16:35As long as I'm going to soften the motorway safely,
16:37and these guys get to go home.
16:38So I reckon it's pretty awesome.
16:44Later that night, Sam's checking motorists' speeds on the north-western.
16:53Yeah, initially doing 118.
16:56The driver must have a screw loose
16:58if they think this kind of speed is acceptable.
17:02Hello, ma'am. How are you tonight?
17:05What happened?
17:07Cut down.
17:09I'm going to stay at an operation on my hook.
17:11Oh, no. Tell me what happened.
17:13I'll just grab your license in the meantime.
17:14Tell me what happened to your foot.
17:17Oh, no.
17:18Putting her worst foot forward,
17:20the driver's keen to show off her injury.
17:23Oh, wow.
17:25But Sam prefers to focus on the safety aspect of the incident.
17:29All righty. Please concentrate for me, yeah?
17:32The woman passes her breath test with flying colors.
17:35Working on motorway patrol,
17:37we deal with crashes all day, every day.
17:40But when speed is a factor,
17:42outcome is never pretty, yeah?
17:43I cannot even imagine the pain that you are in right now physically.
17:48But let's just try to go home safely.
17:51Okay?
17:51Carry on.
17:52Any questions for me before you leave?
17:56One o'clock.
17:57Still got a couple of hours.
17:58High five.
17:59It just goes to show,
18:00some people do have a thing for officers in uniform.
18:04He was so understanding.
18:07He listened to my sad, pathetic story
18:09about having a screw loose in my foot, not in my head.
18:13And at least he had a smile on his face the whole time,
18:16so I appreciate that.
18:17Sam truly is her knight in shining armor.
18:25Wet weather and slippery surfaces
18:27are a dangerous combination on State Highway 1.
18:30Do you see any flashing lights?
18:32I do not.
18:32Sergeant Will Lowrins is all too familiar
18:35with the end results of this kind of perfect storm.
18:38Put yourself two reports of a two-vehicle crash.
18:43They're sitting in live lanes at the moment.
18:46Unfortunately, the vehicles have become stuck together.
18:51Tightly locked together
18:52and dangerously blocking the fast lane.
18:54This whirlwind union needs to be split up,
18:57but they have formed an unbreakable bond
18:59thanks to the Ute's gutsy tow bar.
19:02The tow bar is hooked on the elevator.
19:04Oh, yeah.
19:05Let's go forward.
19:06One last attempt to break up the couple,
19:10but no joy.
19:11All right, just wait there, wait there.
19:13All right, I reckon we'll be strong enough to get over there.
19:16This unlikely match has Will thinking on his feet.
19:19We'll get the lanes blocked
19:21and then we'll get you to go across to the left.
19:23Yeah.
19:23Across the other side.
19:23Yeah.
19:25As Will magically stops two live lanes,
19:29the entangled twosome head to the safety of the shoulder.
19:39Despite causing this mismatch of metal,
19:42the driver of the Toyota feels hard done by.
19:44I was just driving, keeping my distance,
19:47and then I don't know why the car in front of me
19:49was just stopping.
19:50It forced me to stop.
19:52I was running.
19:52I was driving without the limit.
19:54And then, yeah, boom,
19:56I hit the car.
19:57My car car was gone.
19:58Luckily, traffic management are well-versed
20:01in uncoupling unwelcome courtships.
20:04We just have to get all the crash details.
20:06The Ute is no doubt pleased to be released.
20:10Are you going to hop in for me?
20:11A gentle push.
20:13And, like many fast unions, it fizzles out.
20:18Despite feeling jilted,
20:19Will suggests the driver of the Toyota
20:21look on the bright side.
20:22You're going to get to carry on playing your game today.
20:25You still have your arms and your hands.
20:27You can still do this.
20:27You can still play.
20:28So that's the main thing.
20:30Just keep remembering that.
20:32Terrible, but you're fine.
20:33And he's fine.
20:35You didn't hurt someone else.
20:36I want to know if I'm not in trouble with the law
20:38because I'm driving within the limit.
20:39Oh, no, you're getting a ticket.
