00:00This week we're in London where our designers are doing up spaces at The Passage,
00:06a homelessness charity that provides support and 43,000 meals a year.
00:12So chef, what do you want me to do?
00:14I can maitre d', I can sprinkle, I can stir.
00:18I'm sure you can, Alan, but right now I need 1,000 potatoes prepared fast.
00:22More chipping, less chatting.
00:251,000 potatoes?
00:26I'm going to need backup.
00:28Oi!
00:32Right, start sanding those spuds.
00:35Welcome to Interior Design Masters.
00:38Eight designers remain as they compete for a life-changing prize to partner with Next to launch their own homeware
00:46collection.
00:48Last time, they stormed a castle.
00:53I'm going to knock out all the competition with this.
00:55And transformed hotel bedrooms.
00:58Big old wall.
01:00Sophie created the perfect love nest and one standout space.
01:04It was romantic, it was updated, it was modernised.
01:08Thank you very much.
01:10Duran's lack of wardrobe.
01:12We've lost out a little bit on the practicality in service to surrealism.
01:16And Emily's focus on her artwork.
01:19I've done a crown for Maid Marian.
01:21I need you to let go of your identity as an artist and then allow yourself to become a designer.
01:30But it was Frankie's busy bedroom.
01:33It's a bit of a visual overload.
01:35That saw her check out of the competition.
01:37I'm just super disappointed.
01:39I'm just super disappointed.
01:39But this isn't the end, it's just the beginning.
01:52This week we're designing for a homeless charity in London.
01:55It's completely different to anything I've ever done before.
01:59Redesigning a space for someone that's homeless can actually build a bit of confidence in them
02:03and be the space to belong.
02:05If our designs can help to facilitate that, then that's going to be a tremendous reward for all of us
02:10as designers.
02:12Last week I visited the sofa.
02:16It was my second time.
02:18I think I was pulled up because Michelle can see that I really do want to learn.
02:22I've got potential and I can do this.
02:27Hi gang, how are you?
02:29Hello.
02:30Well done for making it to week three.
02:33Woo-hoo.
02:34Right, love.
02:35You've officially passed that, oh, this is awkward, I've gone home too soon stage.
02:41Now this week's challenge is a biggie.
02:44Not just because it's tough, but because of the huge difference your designs are going to make to people who
02:50really need them.
02:52In London, Victoria is The Passage, a sanctuary for people experiencing homelessness.
02:58For over 45 years, it's provided free meals and safe shelter with the support of volunteers and its royal patron,
03:06Prince William,
03:07who was introduced to the charity by Princess Diana.
03:10Today, The Passage aims to prevent homelessness and supports over 3,000 people a year.
03:16It's not just about access to food, showers, clothing.
03:19It's also about getting people into accommodation, getting people into employment, into training, and essentially back into society.
03:28And the designers will be doing up four of their meeting spaces.
03:32The Arts and Crafts Room, the Employment Suite, the Group Workshop, and the Wellness Mezzanine.
03:40For the first time, you'll be working in pairs.
03:45A bit like a tandem skydive for designers.
03:49And Sophie, because you won Stand Out Space last week, you can choose your partner first.
03:55Oh, I wasn't expecting this bombshell.
03:58Surprise!
04:00I would actually love to work with Joanne.
04:03OK, lovely.
04:04Right, everyone, you pick a partner you'd like to work with.
04:08Do you want to work with me?
04:08Yeah, I'll go with you.
04:09Yeah.
04:11Yep.
04:12Yes.
04:13Sorry, you've got the worst.
04:15Emily!
04:16I'm going to smash it.
04:19Now, Michelle, you like to put them under pressure, but with this one, you've gone full Freddie Mercury.
04:25What do you want to see from our designers?
04:28Well, it's true.
04:29Working in pairs does add an extra dimension to the challenge.
04:32But overall, I really want to see rooms that have a sense of hope for the people that will be
04:38using them,
04:39but also practical solutions for the staff that work there.
04:43At the end, two designers will be awarded Stand Out Space.
04:48However, two designers will be going home.
04:51So give it everything you've got.
04:54You've got two days and a budget of £3,000 per room.
04:58We'll see you in London town.
05:07After planning in their pairs, the designers are ready to meet the staff and community members who use the spaces.
05:15First up are Sophie and Duran.
05:18Hello!
05:19Hi!
05:20Who've been given the group workshop?
05:24We use this room for anything and everything, really.
05:28So it needs to be able to have, like, one-to-one meetings, bigger meetings, activities, sometimes dog therapy.
05:35So you need, like, a lot of space.
05:38What about any big problems that you want us to address?
05:41We do a lot of packaging here. A lot of donation comes into the passage.
05:46So what would you guys think about maybe building a packing table? Would that be helpful?
05:50Yes, that would be perfect.
05:52Once your environment is well-kept, it affects the mood.
05:57Absolutely.
05:57We want to come in and feel relaxed and enjoy our learning sessions.
06:02Yeah, I think we've got you.
06:04Yeah.
06:06It's a challenge, but I think we've got some clever ideas up our sleeves.
06:10And I'm excited for us to work together. I think we'll be proud of this space.
06:15Johnny and Leah have the employment suite.
06:18Hiya.
06:18Johnny, nice to meet you.
06:19Where homeless people are helped back into work.
06:23This is where we meet our passage community, whether it's training, employment, volunteering, etc.
06:29So their journey begins in this room.
06:31Their journey begins, yeah, yeah.
06:32Is there necessarily like a feeling that you want people to have when they come into this room?
06:36Well, we want people to feel safe.
06:38We want it to feel welcoming and friendly and inclusive.
06:42Definitely important.
06:43So that's really important.
06:44We normally work as a team on a table and we do like that,
06:48but we still need a space for privacy with the clients when we're doing the one-to-one.
06:53And then in terms of colours, maybe some yellows, a nice calming blue.
06:58That sounds perfect, actually. Yellows and blues.
07:01Like the sunshine itself.
07:02Yeah.
07:04We're hoping to achieve a more motivational space.
07:09We really want one, that they want to come and work there.
07:11Two, they want to inspire others.
07:13And also to kind of get them into a really good start at the beginning of their journey.
07:18And I feel that room, once we're finished with it, is going to be...
07:25This is such a lovely space.
07:27Ben and Kate have the wellness mezzanine.
07:30It looks like it gets used for a lot of different things.
07:32It's one of the main communal areas we've got here.
07:35Most people coming in off the street, they need food, showers, and they kind of just want to rest.
07:40So they need a bit of a quiet space.
07:42But we also have, like, the client computers up here.
07:45We run groups and activities.
07:47Fitness.
07:47The fitness group do their exercise up here.
07:49It's definitely a multifunctional area.
07:51And then if it gets super cold, we'll open for a night shelter and people will sleep up here.
07:57What do you think the main challenges are with this room?
07:59I would say the noise from downstairs.
08:02It can be really difficult when you do have a group running.
08:04So everything we're putting in hopefully will help reduce the noise.
08:07Yeah.
08:08Oh, that sounds really good.
08:09Yeah.
08:10The space, it's multifunctional, but everything needs to be moved out of the way.
08:14So the room's asking for a lot.
08:16Can it, Joss?
08:18Hello.
08:19And Emily and Ajit have the arts and crafts room.
08:22Someone's journey of recovery is about processing some of the experiences that have happened to them.
08:27And by focusing on something creative, it really starts that reintegration into a community.
08:32So what currently doesn't work for the space?
08:34I think at the moment it's a little bit messy.
08:37There's not that much space to store a lot of our stuff.
08:41The kitchen area is quite outdated.
08:43It would just be nice to have, like, a brighter, cleaner room.
08:49I think there's a bit of extra pressure on us this week, just given our experiences.
08:52I'm a trustee for a homelessness charity, Emily being an art teacher and going into spaces like this.
08:57And I understand how important these spaces are, and it's actually quite like a dream to design one of these
09:04spaces.
09:05I can't afford for this to go wrong, and I'm not even thinking about it.
09:08I can't afford for this to go wrong.
09:08I can't afford for this to go wrong.
09:10I can't afford for this to go wrong.
09:10Right.
09:11Let's get our thousand cushions out the back.
09:13I know.
09:15With designs locked down, it's time to put plans into action.
09:19Is this the fabric for the seating?
09:21Possibly.
09:24There's a lot in here.
09:26Each team has two carpenters and a decorator to help.
09:31Hi.
09:32Hello.
09:33Good morning.
09:34So welcome to the Wellness Mezzanine.
09:36Can you feel the calm?
09:37Mm-hmm.
09:37Well, maybe.
09:39It's calm at the moment, isn't it?
09:40Yeah.
09:41We're going to try and break this down into five different areas, so...
09:45Six.
09:46Six, all right, yeah.
09:48Ben and Kate's six zones will be divided into an office with an upcycled floating desk and sofa,
09:55a library reading nook and shelving with semi-arched dividers,
09:59a relaxing yoga and meditation space, a private one-to-one alcove,
10:05a dining space for up to 12 people, and a lounge which doubles as a sleeping area on cold nights.
10:12They'll display clients' artwork up the stairs, and a wave pattern will encircle the space,
10:18including a new plywood wall along the railing.
10:21Each of the six zones will be denoted by a different earthy colour on both the walls and floor.
10:27Should we do 250, just to make it a nice, even number?
10:30I don't think any bigger than that.
10:32We're just marking out the zones, making sure we've got enough space for everything,
10:37and also so we can clearly see visually what it's going to look like.
10:41Oh, yeah, they're definitely big enough, absolutely.
10:42They're definitely big enough.
10:43Yeah, yeah.
10:44I think we're happy.
10:48As Ben and Kate get to work dividing up their multiple zones...
10:52It's like my son's room.
10:54All I ever find is socks.
10:57It's the work of a madman.
11:00Sophie and Duran are focusing their attention on one huge build for the group workshop.
11:05A lot of this room is used for storing donations, so we've got a kind of L-shaped unit.
11:11The big build, the monster of the room, is this huge partition with loads of storage.
11:17I hope that it doesn't feel intimidating when you walk into the room.
11:20Instead, I want it to encourage you to go round and actually find the other area of the room.
11:25There's a lot of wood needing for this. Have you got enough?
11:28I hope so.
11:31Duran's three-metre-high unit will include a generous counter for packing donations
11:36and plenty of shelves and cupboards for storage.
11:39She's using a sustainable OSB wood, which she's highlighting in an electric blue.
11:44This will be softened with blush pink walls and a cornflower blue ceiling.
11:49Onto it, she's adding the passage motto, running it down the wall.
11:54Sophie's in charge of the modular upholstered bonquette seating, which will include hidden storage.
11:59She's layering it with cushions and adding a scalloped rug to create a homely cosy feel.
12:05And she's upcycling free coffee tables to create a tiered packing station for donations.
12:12Yay! My vision is coming to life!
12:15The packing table is coming along nicely.
12:19She is a bit wobbly at the minute, but we're putting some extra reinforcement in so that she'll be solid.
12:25The last one on top again? The last one on top with the table top.
12:27So something like this. Oh, my God, it's going to work!
12:31Cool.
12:31Yes!
12:34In the arts and crafts room...
12:36Oh, I only drink a metal margarita.
12:38Ajeev's also shaking things up with some repurposing.
12:42I've got six of these units. I've got them all second-hand.
12:45Emily and I have played on our individual strengths, so Emily's led on colour and texture.
12:49And I've taken responsibility for the furniture that's going to be multifunctional and configured as people need it to.
12:55So there'll be a piece of plywood here varnished, another varnished piece of plywood, which will be on hinges.
13:00So that when you lift it up, it forms like one long table, and that'll be like the individual workstation.
13:04Yeah, these shelves have definitely seen better days.
13:07And teammate Emily is reorganising the messy art storage cupboard.
13:12And at the moment, this isn't working for the clients.
13:15We're going to make that better.
13:17We've got art drying, so it's like you can hang sculptures to dry, you can put your paints on the
13:22drying rack.
13:23And again, it's all adjustable.
13:24If I can make their life, like, easier by two minutes, then, you know, it's the least I can do.
13:33Seeing that, I'm like, this shelf is so wedged in.
13:37We might have to keep that one where it is.
13:41Emily's cupboard will be organised into an area for storing materials and drying artwork.
13:47She's chosen to colour-drench the room with calming peach and orange tones,
13:52and she's ombre-ing these colours on the far wall.
13:55She's in charge of revamping the kitchen in soft green and terracotta,
14:00and she'll vinyl-wrap the countertop.
14:03Ajit's multifunctional furniture will include a modular bench,
14:07three backlit wall-mounted cabinets to display artwork,
14:11and his upcycled modular workstations.
14:15But the pièce de résistance will be Emily's own sculptures,
14:19giant papier-mâché pencils which she will hang around the room.
14:26It's like sorting out the storage cupboard. Stressful.
14:30And now I'm treating myself to half an hour of papier-mâché
14:32and it is like art therapy.
14:34And this is the nibs of the pencils that I'm making.
14:38If you can't do papier-mâché in an arts and crafts room,
14:41when can you do papier-mâché?
14:49I'm so excited to be here in London to check on the designers.
14:53It's a bit of a different vibe to Brian,
14:55so I thought I'd fit in with the locals.
15:04Uhul.
15:18Do you like them?
15:19Cl complaining in the 혹시 per 快оль,
15:22Good evening and enjoy!
15:22Very good, ready of course!
15:23What is Papa doing?
15:23At л appreciated!
15:26All right.
15:26Here, what did you do?
15:27Operator 2 emily.
15:27Preparing Profiling Sanibel
15:27hurray & pitch Divine
15:27sewage pipe sewage pipe I thought you changed your perfume and what have I
15:35told you about paper mache because one of Michelle's criticisms of you was you're
15:41this fantastic artist with this amazing mind but you need to park that and be an
15:46interior designer first are you getting it right this week absolutely I looked
15:50at the brief I looked at what they needed I addressed that first then did
15:54the art what made you think you saw a sewage pipe I went they'd make a great
15:58pencil well I've been designing all week yeah so I went to cheer myself up I went
16:02to the hardware store I saw these we have very different lifestyles I go there to
16:07get depressed so you went I'm gonna go to a hardware store and I'm gonna buy some
16:12poo pipes well I would say they look like they could even be paintbrushes pencils
16:17pens yeah just put a bit of paper mache on the end voila you've got a pencil okay
16:22great I can't wait to tell Michelle how inspirational this place is do you know
16:26what I'm gonna write her a giant postcard can I borrow this to HB of course you can
16:31thanks love see you soon see you bye have you got a sharpener
16:38just make that curve really long we are marking the way about we're gonna paint
16:45the zones on the walls the top half is going to be like an off-white and then
16:49each wave's gonna be a different color waves to me I instantly feel calm by the sea they're not
16:56like a straight structure there's not sharp edges so they're quite soft curves I got this I got it
17:04Ben and Kate will continue the waves along the railing at the moment all these rails are obviously all
17:09open to the sound just comes straight up and straight through so hopefully with these we get a nice
17:15curve feel by enclosing their space with plywood panels yeah coming on the way yeah exactly you're
17:21gonna have the way of going away through so sauce and calming faster as long as when they're sat down
17:27the sound isn't right in their ear I think that's a win really for that space hi Kate so listen
17:37firstly
17:38what the hell is a wellness mezzanine so this is a multi-functional space this area here will be
17:44like a chill out but the laws can play some games but yoga in the back reading how do you
17:51approach that
17:52though because there's a million and one things that can be happening up here how can you possibly
17:57appease everyone you know and Michelle to really have to think about can it be moved out the way but
18:04everything needs to be zoned and quiet and and we are in the mezzanine that's open so we've put these
18:10boards and we've stuck some acoustic panels to the back of them I want these things here yeah Ben
18:15try check to see if it works you can go ahead and check okay wait there let's see did you
18:24hear that
18:29nope didn't hear a thing result it's halfway through day one this looks wicked yeah and with
18:48builds going up the frame is like almost done just some rain the carpenters have got their work cut
18:54out we've got the bonkette seating that needs building we've got a printer storage unit at the
18:58back the kitchenette unit that needs buildings there's quite a few builds um they'll be fine
19:05paintwork is going from tired to inspired Gareth this is gorgeous so I'm doing an ombre on the window
19:14wall just so it evokes that feeling of sort of release and calm but also it's a quick effective
19:20way of making people feel the ease that I want them to feel when they walk into the space so
19:26once we get
19:27the bleed in here yeah to match these two in between really nice thank you and you're happy with your
19:35wiggle I'm really happy with the record I've took control of the colors I wanted it to be a calming
19:41space so using earth tones can be really relaxing cozy nothing more calming than the green and it's
19:49your bum right behind me that's right while Kate goes calm and earthy oh my god Sophie you need to
19:59look at this Duran's going bold I like to work in colors of three so the ceiling is in a
20:05cornflower
20:05blue and the walls are in a shrimp pink with an accent color of ultramarine oh yeah you like it
20:12love
20:12it when you're looking at color psychology they just make you feel really uplifted and peaceful
20:17and tranquil but also help you with productivity so it's kind of what we need that room to do and
20:22in
20:22their basement employment suite I absolutely love the yellow Leah and Johnny's colors are having to
20:28work hard looks warm and it looks sunshine amazing yeah everything she wanted boom color theory was really
20:36important for this design obviously it's in the basement there's not a lot of light but the space
20:41had to be welcoming it had to be inspiring so yellow is such a happy color then orange is energetic
20:48and
20:48motivational and then blue is very calming in case people feel a bit nervous coming into the space
20:53initially Leah's happy yellow will flood the room and she's adding a cork texture to the far wall with pops
21:02of color Johnny has completely changed the layout of the space moving the employees desks into the
21:08middle and Leah's sandwiching it with giant orange circles on the ceiling and the floor over which
21:15she's hanging in a dramatic moss and floral lighting feature she's adding a geometric lino flooring to the
21:22raised entrance and Johnny's creating a waiting area with corner bonkett seating a cable reel coffee table
21:29as well as adding a tea making station for the client and employee meetings Johnny's designed free
21:36bright and cheery zoned booths Johnny came up with this amazing idea to have some booths in the corner
21:43with some kind of nice small arches oh it looks so good especially like off the blue framework that
21:48looks so nice this is where they'll have one-to-one meetings with clients or maybe a meeting that needs
21:54to be a bit more private and then one of the other booths is for a bit of a more
21:57casual conversation
21:58away from your desk and Johnny isn't the only one using arches to zone his space never have too
22:04many arches can you the arch is basically to partition the ball permanently because obviously
22:09all our stuff in our room has to be modular has to be moved out of the way as obviously
22:13we need all
22:13the floor space we possibly can get the arches are going to be fixed to the wall but not to
22:19be so big
22:20that they are blocking anything you can still move everything around one arch looks fabulous this is look
22:28crazy and while Duran's epic room divider is still under construction all right let's have a look
22:38don't you dare it she's made a start on her giant lettering I'm actually bringing in some typography so
22:44I've cut out my own stencils and I will be taking it down all the way from the ceiling and
22:49using their
22:49slogan which is everyone deserves a space to call home you picked quite enough words mate there's so
22:56many words after this day one of the passage is drawing to a close to get it cut and then
23:05I'll
23:05chase you with the roller Emily energy joint forces to finish his upcycled workstation speed painting
23:12with Emily we're just setting the pace a little bit higher working with the G we've managed to ground
23:19each other look how quick that's taken us and help one another and we've really leveled out each other I
23:30hope it's the leg for me and someone says that you can't do yoga and then zoning the last bit
23:37of
23:37flooring we've done acoustic boards on the railings we've got the arches up on the wall with different
23:44zone colors on wall and floor how are we gonna get out of here we're not we're gonna sleep it's
23:50not my
23:52biggest concern is making sure we stay on track of that to-do list I've overstretched and just really
23:59finishing it off and naming it look at that overall feeling good we've managed a lot to me see you
24:10it
24:10looks exactly how I envisioned it in my brain and hopefully Johnny's too fantastic day we smashed it
24:17is that looking too tight uh I don't know I don't step back I feel frazzled at four between them
24:25two
24:25stencils have been a bit of a nightmare yeah perfect yeah yeah I can't see it but I trust you
24:31I am
24:32getting a bit concerned about time because Duran storage is still only partially built and the
24:38carpenters have got quite a lot to do with my seating we've got to build the seats yeah like without
24:43seating there's no point no let's go move my paintbrush we're so lame it's day two at the passage
25:02good we all sleep okay all right good we've got a lot to do and there's just 12 hours left
25:09plan of
25:10action today get the booths finished number one we'd like to get it all finished I think what's the
25:17first thing for us to get on with shelving in the office and bookcase in the reading and you'll be
25:22pleased to know more arches so the zones I'm going to be taking charge of the blue zone the lounge
25:32area
25:32then we've got the red zone over there the office space and then right behind me in the back corner
25:37is the green zone which is the one-to-one area as well I have the reading nook the quiet
25:43dining
25:44area and yoga area like you're there little slanted but yeah yeah no what do you do the height and
25:50then
25:50eleven it all right cheeky yeah the shall be talking really good just a little bit of storage like
25:56light weights or some towels gonna be a meditation area as well so I might put a few like LED
26:03candles on
26:04there to like help with the Zen all right one two three up finally Duran's big build is going up
26:13okay
26:14yeah lovely and then to me yeah it's so much bigger but it looks beautiful and also like the colors
26:25of
26:26the word against the colors in the room just chef's kiss some materials unit you ready when you enter
26:37the arts and crafts room you'll see on the left hand side our bespoke carpentry so that's really
26:41focused around our two display units which will allow the passage and clients to display their artwork
26:46yeah can you sort of start now seeing how the space is going to be used I hope you like
26:52it hello
26:54everyone hello deserves has got two s's don't don't do I've been questioning myself so everyone deserves a
27:05place to call well where are we is this it here yeah yeah okay let me see everyone deserves a
27:15place to
27:16call home so this is the charity's slogan oh yeah and I wanted to do something special that really
27:32creates a sense of home in the space well I'm already feeling uplifted I really am and you know
27:38what you never know everyone deserves a standout space yeah oh my gosh that'd be amazing pop that
27:45up there as a subliminal message to Michelle she might fall for it see ya now the carpenters are freed
27:53up
27:54from Duran's divider 450 from ground to cushion mm-hmm 500 from yes there today they can start on Sophie's
28:03seating for the workshop meeting area the client specifically asked for something that was easy to
28:08reconfigure if they needed to obviously the room is used for a lot of different things for staff
28:14meetings dog therapy sessions barber appointments having seating that can be moved around was really
28:20important and the cushions haven't gone crazy haven't gone full Sophie at all no leopard print we've
28:27gone for a rich buttermilk color which is gonna look lovely with the overall theme hey there guys
28:35how's it going we're getting now started on the bench yeah it's just getting it knocked out now
28:40don't I mean so we're building our sofa seating that will have under seat storage but this will
28:46hopefully just pull out and configure however you wish for whatever activity sweet okay Leah beautiful
28:55and Johnny's also configuring comfy seating just so precise for the corner of the employment suite
29:02waiting area so we got some scrap foam from our local scrap store and they had just like offcuts so
29:08I'm gonna mount this on a ply board spray it down and then cover it in wadding and cover it
29:14in the fabric
29:15these are chair beds sofas they're pretty modular and while the other designers are building bespoke
29:23when people are here obviously in emergency cases they need beds so obviously these folding out into
29:29beds such a good idea Ben's bought new for his lounge zone they undo the buckle and then they just
29:36simply just throw out like so and then you have your your bed as well it's halfway through day two
29:45these are for the mural I decided to make these out of plaster to make them really textural and
29:51if it's slightly imperfect I actually think that adds something to the space and the designers are
29:56adding softness and texture where they can let's go actually these are the cork tiles they're gonna go
30:02on the wall all the way I'm gonna hold all of these this is the obviously the correct way to
30:07measure thing that looks so precise just stay there Leah I'm gonna go get a cup of tea I'll be
30:11back in
30:11a minute all right see you later yeah bye we chose this cork tile which is super easy to apply
30:18and we're
30:19gonna leave tiles out of the wall and we're just gonna add in the pops of color that we have
30:24in the
30:24room just to break it up so then I guess the question is how many do we miss out I
30:29think it's
30:29like an odd one here and there also cork is great because it's an office they need to pin all
30:35their
30:35notices to the cork tiles as well so I'm thinking arches to continue the arch more arches we love an
30:43arch with their six zones divided Kate is adding a bookshelf to her reading nook really really happy
30:51with the bookshelves that I've got in the reading nook one because we got to reuse them they look
30:56absolutely amazing and also I've decided to add lighting into the arches of the bookcase in
31:01just to make it really cozy yay love it can we take these off Leah is also adding a lighting
31:10feature
31:11above their central desk yeah they're just rubbery just cut them just cut that with a knife should we
31:16wait until we've done the framework and be sure we don't need them we can leave them food for thought
31:20so
31:22obviously as to not to offend any any of our decisions when we want to like challenge something
31:28we would just be like food for thought it seems like a nicer way of just being like I hate
31:35this
31:35let's reconsider so this is gonna be the light fixture that we're gonna suspend the bulbs from I'm just
31:46gonna use some artificial moss and this will be wrapped around the frame hi Leo hi Alan how are you
31:56yeah great oh I love kale too go get your greens out in the day don't you yeah smoothies to
32:03start your
32:04mmm yeah and what's it like working with Johnny because as designers when you're working with another
32:10designer if you don't like something they've come up with you have to be brave and say I don't
32:16actually agree with you we've had many of those but me and Johnny have a nice phrase that we say
32:22when
32:22that happens that it means the other person hates the other idea what is it so we go food for
32:28thought
32:28and that basically means I don't like your idea yeah let's think about it another way upstairs in the
32:35wellness mezzanine I'm really pleased with that Kate is getting to grips with some nifty storage
32:41for her yoga area this is a pegboard so you can put your yoga mats you can hang skipping ropes
32:48off
32:48it or put weights on it if there is a one-to-one going on this can be moved between
32:54the two zones
32:55just to give it a little bit more privacy bloody looks amazing if I don't see so myself Emily and
33:01Ajit's art room is the only space which includes a kitchen I've taken on the kitchen which has been
33:08really interesting because I never knew anything about kitchens before the client requested a modern
33:13clean upstate kitchen that people want to use and with this grout pen this is bringing in that warm
33:20terracotta that I've incorporated within the room it's going down and she's using a terrazzo style vinyl
33:29for a cheap yet instant update to the worktop terrazzo is like it's just a joyful material we're
33:36in the arts and classroom we're trying to promote creativity and for me I just find that material
33:41it's like energetic but it's also like smart this reminds me of at school when you wrapped your exercise
33:47books in it for apparently no reason whatsoever apart from to prep you to vinyl wrap a kitchen work
33:53surface for my first kitchen I'm sorry well done while Emily's wrap has worked a treat
34:01um super thought Leah and Johnny's vinyl is a sticking point what do you not like about it
34:08finish because I won't be offended yeah it's not a shade thing to you I'm more thinking it looks like
34:15we're trying to cover it but we are the vinyl look like a two-year-old had done it but
34:21I just think even if
34:22the most talented person has done it is not an easy thing to vinyl wrap have you used like a
34:26water spray
34:27something when you before you put it on no because it's sticky for me I just don't want to leave
34:32it white and
34:34but I think that's kind of my style I don't love the way it does feel really off to see
34:39to me mm-hmm so I think we're gonna have to
34:42think up a plan B I can't believe it I've just been told a VIP link to the charities swinging
34:54by I
34:55haven't been told who it is but apparently they're tall limited hair and you can't look them directly in
35:11the eye Alan how are you Dara what are you doing here where's where's Prince William oh you're
35:18obsessed with Prince William you've got to let that go I've been doing stuff with this charity
35:21for years and they told me you were doing this I'm really excited and I want to see the rooms
35:24yeah
35:25sure okay don't look me directly in the eye comedian and presenter Dara O'Brien is an ambassador of the
35:38passage he's worked in the kitchen and he puts on comedy events to raise money for the charity got
35:44someone to see you oh wow it's a party for my eyes I've always done stuff with it with homeless
35:54charities but in Ireland and here and I think part of it is a sense of I came to a
35:58big city it's worked
35:59out okay for me but like it's incredible the line between the lives we take for granted and ending up
36:05on the streets it's very very thin I want to show you something quite practical yeah these cupboards
36:11were absolutely chocolate so I've been doing a storage solution I've thought about every kind
36:16of drying solution paper dispenser put your wet paper I'm sorry I hear the word storage solution
36:23I love it and we've built this you have a little table smooth weren't it that was like a knife
36:29through
36:29butter the way that came up I became an ambassador this year you know it's the only point of anyone
36:35like me doing stuff is to trumpet the work of others who generally do a lot of the things is
36:38Duran
36:38this is Sophie okay it's a lesson you learn late in life that volunteering is a genuine source of great
36:44joy people should do it and then what's this the chalkboard don't have a little write something
36:49inspirational come on something from the heart because the last time I did something here that
36:58was my job that was basically the vibe I go ho ho good for you chop chop chop all right
37:04I've really
37:05enjoyed seeing what the designers have done with their spaces I've never had to build a space for
37:09me to meet them in yeah this is nice this is part of a journey to restore a full life
37:14to people give
37:15them homes give them jobs and part of that is restoring joy do you do yoga a bit downward dog
37:21downward dog yeah good design like that are you are you stretching in any way there Alan are you I
37:28don't think
37:29anything's moving that's just been a delight to see what you think of this oh my god you know it's
37:37transformed I'm drawing up design ideas yeah Johnny's found an alternative for Leah's filing cabinet wrap
37:47thoughts yeah circles yeah something like that yep on the front of the drawers yeah we decided in the end
37:54that we're just gonna go for some circles which ties into the circle motif in the room in these times
38:00you've got to abandon ship and you've got to just regroup and find something that works better benches are
38:06here we've just hours left oh so good Sophie's upholstery finally has some seating and there's one more coming
38:19yes yeah Kate's created a whole new zone this zone is quiet dining downstairs can get really really busy
38:28and noisy so if they come up here they can come and sit and just eat in a nice quiet
38:33space and Leah has
38:36plans to cordon off the printer area of the ceiling yeah okay and then they're gonna be angled or can
38:42I put
38:43it on a button across the floor ideally no buttons otherwise it really ruins my vision you know yeah
38:48it would wouldn't it away from the door pointing that way these are to hook your aprons on that I've
38:56got for cookery and painting I am bringing in some artwork into the room there's no right or wrong just
39:07color
39:08that you love hopefully and yeah just feel it out the problem is knowing when to stop just a little
39:15bit more pink what do you think I feel like you might need a bigger one there just because it's
39:19quite a lot of space I think it's really really important to reuse artwork the clients have made
39:27this is the artwork oh cute go get it on the walls special delivery for a jeet oh thank god
39:37yes can you
39:39bring the o in a little bit closer but there it looks so cool left one just a tiny little
39:46bit higher yeah
39:47perfect thank you designers you have one hour to go that's my line
39:56just sorting out my mug hooks it all gets done everyone works their magic
40:05go down go down go down how beautiful oh that's a sexy mirror
40:13nice
40:17we can do it Johnny that should be the I need to be that way doesn't it
40:24time is done oh my god I can't believe it good I'm so happy oh I think you did a
40:37good job yeah I've
40:38poured my heart and soul into it I feel like well done mate honestly well done no good to work
40:45right let's go let's go
40:51Michelle has arrived at the passage with Sophie Robinson oh I am so excited to get inside this
40:58building because I think this is a real opportunity for interior design to really change quite a lot of
41:04people's lives Sophie is celebrated for her use of color to bring joy to residential and commercial spaces
41:11I'd like the designers use all the tools in their toolkit color is going to be absolutely essential to
41:17creating the mood and the feeling but also a lot of these spaces are multifunctional so we'll be looking
41:22for modular solutions this could be furniture that can be easily moved around and reconfigured I think
41:29this is a really special challenge because they've also got to uplift and inspire and give a sense of
41:35hope to these people that are using the spaces
41:43I am so happy with how the employment suite has turned out the vision we wanted was for that room
41:50to feel motivational inspirational just a happy place to come and work for a lot of people it's
41:57their first impression of the passage so it was so important to us that we really created this
42:01inviting welcoming space
42:08wow can I just have a wow moment it's really hits you as soon as you walk in right they've
42:13injected it
42:14with joy with this really punchy color palette created a welcoming space with such a clever layout and I
42:22love as well that they've put all the staff in the middle facing inwards so you can really imagine this
42:28as a kind of big hive of activity I mean that light fitting draped in that lovely ferny greenery is
42:34extra I like that Leah and Johnny have added this sort of pause point to the design I could make
42:40myself a cup of tea or coffee and it's just with a little bit of pattern a little bit of
42:44texture it's
42:45just enough what's happening over here though this corner unit just doesn't live up to what else
42:50I'm seeing in the room it's pretty poorly made it's very badly upholstered it's not really inviting
42:55me into the space I'm enjoying this cork covered wall at the back here that lends a nice sense of
43:01warmth it's a different material it can double as a pinboard but leaving out a tile to allow a pop
43:08of
43:08colour it doesn't work it just looks like one of the tiles has fallen off I think this is very
43:13sensible
43:14this corner every office has this situation and I think they haven't over complicated it but this
43:20is a really odd little design statement round plastic vinyl dots just cheapens this whole area
43:27but you know what it's actually the little details the fact that this wall divider is slightly on an
43:32angle that really pleases me just notice this on the floor this is like a giant vinyl sticker leads
43:39you around the space and into these communal booth areas they're sort of like a chatting area this might be
43:45somewhere where you have a meeting somewhere to do paperwork but it's nice though because they're
43:50really united with the same design approach really lovely to use the plants because it gives you enough
43:55of a sense of a privacy without closing you in they've done something really clever here it's a good balance
44:01yeah
44:04i'm really pleased of my mural with the passages slogan it really resonated and i feel like it needed to
44:12be celebrated in the space i think this week knowing that two people are going home it makes
44:17your chances of being on the sofa and leaving the competition much higher so fingers crossed michelle likes it
44:27oh kind of wonderful the color palette was duran so you really get that artistic sensibility from her
44:34it's a very lovely soft blushy plus the pink and then they've taken it up a step with this beautiful
44:40powder blue but it's this electric ultra marine gives it some uplift and success because actually
44:47this is a room that is a doing room so it can't all just be like chilled out vibes
44:52i've got lots of space to drop things as soon as i come in but i'm not blocking the rest
44:56of the space
44:56and this is like quite a nice little sociable area here if we were like sorting stuff out together we
45:02could use this and chatting yeah the artwork in here is quite shall we say minimal tiny little pictures
45:08and little frames i like the little bits of color but yeah oh i love all these textures and you've
45:18got
45:18sneaky extra storage underneath too i absolutely love duran's treatment of the motto we're seeing
45:26this mural everywhere around the building but they've decided to super size it flip it onto the
45:31ceiling i just think it looks super cool and i love that she's pulled out the word home because that's
45:36exactly the heart of everything that this charity is about giving it three-dimensionality and a
45:41different color that's the level of attention to detail that i just love
45:52done thank god i mean it was quite a difficult space there was a lot going on there was a
45:57lot to achieve
45:59putting six different colors in a room can sound quite crazy
46:02but i just hope it ticks everything for the clients and the staff this is really nice how
46:09it leads your eye up the stairs i love the picture wall and i see we've got a kind of
46:13squiggly line
46:14that's guiding us up too it's very soft and organic so these first two areas were ben's responsibility
46:22we've got office over here and a kind of lounge area there well i'm drawn here i'm loving this the
46:29color drench bringing the color off the walls and then onto the floor it's a really nice grounding
46:34color to meet your eye as soon as you walk in on the other side these seats fold out to
46:38be beds so if
46:39the weather's ever very very bad the clients can come and sleep up here kate's done this little library
46:45area this is obviously an attempt at some kind of visual divider bringing the arches out of the wall but
46:51that hasn't worked has it looks really unfinished and quite awkward now i'm really drawn to kate's
46:58meditation area i mean i'm wondering how many people were going to be able to do yoga all in one
47:02go
47:03i think the clever thing is these are on casters the planters are on casters so yeah you could move
47:10everything out of the way line up your yoga mat that's clever but then over here this is kate's
47:17quiet dining area i find it very corporate and a bit boring yeah i mean this room needs to do
47:23some
47:23serious heavily lifting it's got to be a chill out place where you can sleep rest relax there's a
47:28workstation there's a reading area you might want to do some meditation yoga maybe a one-to-one and why
47:33not have some lunch as well i know i mean there's so much that is really successful i mean the
47:37space has
47:38been transformed but it's not a huge space and so they've tried to employ these designs but every
47:44little bit to me is a little bit compromised because they're squeezing it all in
47:57yeah i can't believe she got that done quite a few big ambitious builds
48:04the artist inside me is wanting to teach some art in that and i'm really really chuffed with what i
48:11did with the space
48:15it's really joyous isn't it there's no mistaking what this room is for doesn't it just ooze creativity
48:21and like you just want to make this stuff ordinarily you're shutting all those doors because you want
48:26to hide it all away but here actually i want to see all the stacks of the drawings that have
48:31already been
48:32done i want to see the canvas is lying on the side i want to see the paper that i
48:35can pull out
48:36i mean this has been really carefully thought through
48:42i think this is just such a brilliant kitchen mini makeover it's like switch up the worktop color the
48:49grout some good blocks of color job done it looks a million dollars here we can get a real appreciation
48:55of this incredible joinery which is not only storing but also displaying all the beautiful artwork
49:02these are some very basic storage units but they've added tops to them that flip up and down
49:07so they can be folded away so that's ajit using his technical bravado have you noticed that this wall
49:14is on braid yeah that's so it's like a huge sunrise and then over there we've got this glorious paper
49:21mache pencil that's also
49:24a hanging hook thing for aprons which is beautiful and useful yes but it's also a pencil as well so
49:30it's relevant to hear
49:32i feel that we've got two designers who've put themselves in this space i feel that they've enjoyed it
49:38well we're certainly enjoying being in here and that's a sign of a successful design isn't it they're
49:43four really good projects while michelle and sophie deliberate oh my goodness
49:52the moment has come for the clients and staff to see their newly transformed rooms this is what you call
49:58a multi-purpose space it's it's so amazing this is so great guys what do you guys think wow
50:05oh my god this is incredible thanks for sorting out the cupboard as well yeah there you go absolutely
50:11knocked it out of the park well done oh it just looks so warm and inviting so warmly yes it
50:17was like
50:17only well i think this is going to be where i sit oh i love this oh wow hi guys
50:29oh guys this looks amazing
50:33amazing i feel it already like it's going to affect clients behavior up here like that's going to
50:38impact like us as staff and i can't wait for clients to see it it's going to be amazing
50:48the designers are back at the studio and it's time to reveal which team has won standout space
50:54and which pair will be up for elimination oh here they are come on in take a seat
51:04so you made it back from the big smoke just yeah just about johnny and leah how are you
51:10yeah it's all good thanks i've done something different with my hair do you like it or is it food
51:15for
51:16thought food for thought thanks for the compliment listen i would put all of you through but
51:25these two buzz kills have other plans it's michelle and sophie
51:34so who won standout space
51:39well there was one design that i think we felt absolutely encapsulated inspiration but also gave
51:46me all the joys
51:50ajit and emily
51:55oh
52:00honestly ajit i can see that your technical prowess with your clever multifunctional furniture you're
52:06really starting to nail that and emily's you've listened you've learned you've put it into
52:12practice thank you this is insane don't you wish you'd done giant poo pipe pencils
52:21so who else are you keeping in the competition there was one other space that we also felt really
52:26embodied the power of design to transform so sophie and duran for your group workshop room well done
52:37thank you so much so that does mean that ben and kate leah and johnny i would like to see
52:43you on my
52:43sofa so for everyone else congratulations and we'll see you next week
52:55i feel like that inside i felt quite emotional about it just because i'm a trustee for a homeless
53:02charity but it did feel like i was helping out a mate and to then be able to have standout
53:08space as
53:09well just makes it feel like it was a job well done i can't believe it i'm like honestly your
53:13face i'm like
53:14like what it was for the people that use the room and now that place is even more special like
53:19good luck to all of you yeah thank you i need to have a little chat to myself so i
53:25hopefully i can
53:26explain the decisions that i made and fingers crossed it may be something to do with all the zones maybe
53:33we didn't show enough of ourselves in each other's space so i look forward to hearing what they say
53:39i'm sad they didn't love it in the way that we did but they want to learn why and get
53:44a better
53:45understanding my first time on the dreaded sofa so feeling quite nervous but i'm ready to defend yeah
53:57so shall i start with leah and johnny many triumphs in your design really brave to have gone with that
54:04layout put those tables in the middle and i really saw a sense of both of you but a very
54:10coherent
54:11scheme i loved like the cork that was like an interesting change of material on that back wall
54:17but why did you miss some out just as a little nod to like a wee bit of playful colorness
54:22um which is
54:24let me stop you there it doesn't work leaving one out it's like you didn't order enough right oh we
54:29are just way too many as well which is maybe more infuriating it's also about finesse right what was
54:36that like chunky wheelie seating the bonket thing in the corner it wasn't very well made which again
54:42fought with the fact that other elements were so beautifully executed but in the balance of the
54:47whole because you'd already made the platform into something wonderful with the flooring and the
54:51little coffee station so you could have just given yourself a break there yeah and that would have
54:55maybe helped with that the time management thing you'd have had time to put the tiles back on the wall
55:02kate and ben your wellness mezzanine that was a complicated space to work with
55:06you're actually quite audacious in your ambition to take the color all the way around the space
55:12and then onto the floor which i loved you had an extraordinary long list of requirements we did
55:19which arguably you accommodated but i think there was too much okay going on in there yeah yeah
55:26i just wanted to get it so right for them but the whole structure was basically just going have
55:32we done that that that that that that yeah we tried to take too much off the client's list instead
55:36of actually focusing on what was in the space yeah this is one of the hardest lessons to learn as
55:42a
55:42designer that in order to give a client what they need sometimes you have to tell them i cannot give
55:52you what you think you want okay yeah and so in trying to do so much and in the spirit
56:00of glorious
56:02collaboration the whole thing got rather compromised

56:57week
56:57they collaborated so beautifully and really tried to give the client everything that they asked for
57:04but in doing so we had just a bit too much compromise next time whoa that's a piece of machinery
