00:00As people, we're constantly changing and our homes need to change with us.
00:10My number one rule in interior design is to think of interior design as setting the rule for your
00:16next chapter. What would your life look like if you were the most empowered, most creative version
00:23of yourself? Usually that comes down to flow and functionality. Where is your space feeling easy?
00:30And where are there elements that maybe cause friction that we need to address? Because I think
00:35that you feeling stuck doesn't necessarily have anything to do with you, but has everything to do
00:42with your space and how it's not supporting you yet. Rule number two is embrace awkward corners.
00:50A space rarely comes as a blank canvas. There's the architecture, there's the view, there's the light,
00:56and occasionally there's the awkward corner. And what I mean by that, there's the element in the
01:01room that you can't really do anything about. I think that design is an opportunity to take the
01:08elements that are awkward and turn them into design features. Rule number three, expensive materials
01:14never outsmart a good story. Look, I love dramatic marble just like any other designer, but what do you
01:23do when that's out of reach? Sometimes I think that's where the actual opportunity lies. Because a good
01:29story or a really good concept can create a whole new world. So in my opinion, it's not about what
01:36something is made of, it's actually about how it makes you feel and whether it can transport you. Rule four,
01:43think of your furniture and accessories as the supporting cast of a story. Any good story has a whole
01:50variety of characters. You have some different personalities, maybe different generations,
01:56you want a little bit of tension, some drama even. So maybe in your case, that might mean you have
02:01a vintage table with chairs from an up and coming designer that look like sculptures. And then you
02:08throw in some Ikea for good measure, because I think that's what makes a good story.
