00:04:00203 dispatcher might be 10-7
00:04:04he's gone
00:04:14for homicide detectives their chance of solving a murder
00:04:18is cut in half if they don't get a lead within the first 48 hours
00:04:42so about approximately an hour ago we had an armed robbery in which the victims were shot at
00:04:48following the robbery and then while working that armed robbery they observe a bullet hole to an
00:04:54unrelated trailer make contact and they discover the deceased in the back bedroom
00:05:01it happened here in front of 12. so here you can see is where we have the entry of the
00:05:11bullet
00:05:12and then on the other side of this wall is our decedent
00:05:17his name is herberto martinez martinez
00:05:2437 year old eriberto martinez martinez came to the us 20 years ago from oaxaca mexico in search of
00:05:31better job opportunities he worked construction and was packed to move to a new job site in north
00:05:36carolina in the morning he leaves behind a large family including his brother and brother's family
00:05:43in north charleston and his parents and three other siblings back home in mexico
00:05:51the bullet struck him in his facial area while he was sleeping the shot killed herriberto instantly
00:05:59where you see the crowd of people is a general area which the armed robbery victims were
00:06:03when the shooting took place they were at the back corner of their trailer when approximately four
00:06:10what they described as black males approached them demanded their items and as they were fleeing
00:06:15the suspect shot there were several shell casings out here that was collected by patrol the four
00:06:22casings were covered or all night millimeter
00:06:28where the armed robbery happened a trailer has video cameras bravo is helping download the video
00:06:36we need to do interviews with the victims once the video is downloaded i'm gonna have him take my
00:06:41victims to city hall and bravo is gonna sit down with each one and we're gonna have one translation of
00:06:47what happened bush and malone are there and i let them know you're coming with three thank you bravo
00:07:03stray bullets are always rough hoping they got a good description in clothing or there's something
00:07:08distinct on one of the individuals that committed the robbery that we can identify and hopefully with
00:07:13that we'll be able to develop a suspect
00:07:25so run me through what happened
00:07:33so they said they were hanging out drinking beer there were four that came somewhere from like
00:07:39behind the trailer they said okay so they're asking like where that where's the mota which means
00:07:45marijuana yep
00:07:51can you describe like what they were wearing what they look like
00:07:57what they look like
00:07:58he says the man who pointed the gun at him wore a black mask and two others also wore masks
00:08:05two black black masks one had one and then one didn't have one at all
00:08:09he said the one that came up to him with the gun he was only able to see kind of
00:08:14like eyes and
00:08:15he had like the mask with the hoodie on all right
00:08:42he pulled the trigger and did you hear it go
00:08:46and nothing and then he starts going through your pockets
00:08:49he says the suspect stole his keys phone and wallet and then moved on to his friend
00:08:56so the guy with the black mask after he took his phone and everything the black mask
00:09:02went to start searching the other victim victim number two but was it the same one
00:09:08that was kind of doing that was kind of doing all the robbing
00:09:22were they like trying to aim at you or were they like aiming at the house
00:09:36he says he and his friends ran after the men but lost them behind some apartments
00:09:42so when they turned left onto facet that's when you lost sight of them
00:09:48okay
00:10:01well i'm detective bush detectives speak with the two other robbery victims can you describe them
00:10:08if you can describe them
00:10:23any good descriptions on any of the suspects no
00:10:30this is going to be a really tough case hopefully we'll get some good video and it'd be great to
00:10:34get
00:10:34a car coming or going in the area
00:10:42all right watch this detective anthony russ pulls up the surveillance video gathered from the trailer park
00:10:48so you're going to see the suspects walking up stall road on crosses
00:10:53the four of them now are linked up so then we cut to
00:10:59this video where they're now walking into the mobile home park
00:11:12approached the victims from the rear of the trailers
00:11:18you don't really get to see a whole lot it's dark and from a distance
00:11:23you can see they're robbing them that gun
00:11:30then they run beside this mobile home that actually has the cameras
00:11:37then this is the good one they're running and then shooting back
00:11:54so
00:11:55who's living pipe going 39 miles per hour on 35
00:11:58look at me i'm gonna make your bond so high your head to spontaneously combust
00:12:09you're not listening so this is great you're as great as the trooper is
00:12:14court cam new episodes watch now part of crime and investigation only on a and e
00:12:20i found something in my son's coffin wrapped in a plastic bag i think it's a human head
00:12:30i was right there and he stared at me he has a gunshot one to the neck gunshot one to
00:12:35the
00:12:35neck go go go go go extreme caution don't let him out of your sight if you're in here
00:12:42make yourself known where's he at crime in progress new episodes watch now part of crime
00:12:48investigation only on a and e
00:13:01unfortunately for us the video surveillance is at night
00:13:04and they are wearing masks three of them so that makes it challenging
00:13:13but anything distinctive helps us you can see a camo jacket and some nikes and you can form a suspect
00:13:22from them it ends with this where they're running away in the same direction that they came from
00:13:32they fled through this area and then back out this way likely to this road
00:13:41we have some areas of interest we can look for video surveillance might help us id them a little better
00:13:46there's some apartments here that look good so we have some things to do but at least we have a
00:13:54starting
00:13:54point video is going to be the key in this case i think because we don't have any suspects at
00:14:00this time
00:14:01we will probably secure for the night here shortly i'm just like prepping this for the next shift
00:14:08and making sure like the list of cameras is theirs and when they do their brief
00:14:12they can divvy up and hit the ground running in the morning this is a completely innocent victim he was
00:14:19literally sleeping in his bed after a long day's work i mean it's horrible um and it also sucks because
00:14:25right now we don't have any answers but our goal is to bring justice to the victim and for his
00:14:31family
00:14:42let's wake it up it's friday 10 hours in all right everybody's here ready we are so ready we're
00:14:50ready the case is assigned to corporal rob van tyne a 20-year veteran with the north charleston police
00:14:56department all right so this happened last night um i know the patrol responded at 21 50 hours
00:15:02there's uh three victims that were robbed they said that four males robbed them and then they fire
00:15:08shots backwards as they're running off victim was sleeping in his trailer and got hit by gunfire
00:15:15they run towards this pond and that's where you lose them from the camera
00:15:19i imagine if you're going to take a car you've got to go out facet road on up you got
00:15:22to go left on
00:15:23stall or right on stall we need to see if there's any video that we can obtain they actually have
00:15:28good
00:15:29video on the second building in that farmer complex also sergeant bailey was saying um somebody ran
00:15:35they found a broken fence so it could have been him jumping the fence into the park complex
00:15:46i agree i think the main thing right now is just getting as much footage from the surrounding area
00:15:50as possible and see what we got whether it's vehicle leaving or they're staying on foot and running
00:15:55i can do that apartment company also they have cameras there yeah get all the cameras there from
00:15:59the external we can we got you man time so i came in this morning and noticed the night shift
00:16:07um call
00:16:08team responded to this where it gets passed on to the next person rotation i like being on scene being
00:16:13the one who responds to it unfortunately this one i'm not so i have to review the notes that they
00:16:18did
00:16:18and then go from there i just wish we had more information to go off of right now there's nothing
00:16:22to
00:16:22connect the victims to the suspects if we don't have a car we don't have anything yet so it's really
00:16:27a whodunit so we'll see if the cameras and the footage we can develop some more leads
00:16:40back here in this corner is where they put a pallet over a fence and you can see
00:16:44footprints where they've been climbing over the fence
00:16:56there's no video the security cameras at the apartment complex aren't working
00:17:02that's the ring camera on but the team will canvas each apartment for doorbell cameras so
00:17:11gives them a lot of problems according to someone in the building there have been complaints about
00:17:16two young men on the second floor one of the males was sitting in this kia yesterday stolen out of
00:17:24city
00:17:24the ignitions popped you think they could be our bad guys they're all tracked back here
00:17:31making some possibility of
00:17:35i had a still shot of the uh suspects from our surveillance camera for the shooting
00:17:40he picked out two from the the four individuals detective david pritchard showed the video image
00:17:46to the tipster he said that he thinks the two in the middle are the two sons that live at
00:17:50this apartment
00:17:55we're gonna do a knock and talk reference to that stolen car
00:17:58and see if it has anything to do with our homicide
00:18:17detectives bring out a woman and her two teenage sons
00:18:20we're gonna pray for you calm down came up here and knocked on the door they opened the door
00:18:28wreaked the marijuana so we pulled everybody's for investigative detention now we're gonna get
00:18:33a search warrant type for the residents for anything related to the incident what are we doing
00:18:42listen to what they see and calm down i'm their mom maybe these kids were involved in the incident
00:18:59i wonder if there's a way we can downplay it and say some items were stolen let's get those items
00:19:06back maybe they'd be more forthcoming how you doing man could be better vantine starts with the older
00:19:14brother is that your apartment over there your sister's how long you've been there um
00:19:25so they came they smelled marijuana whatever is there anything else in there is there any
00:19:28because i know they're going to go in there and look is there any weapons or anything like that
00:19:31like is there like a gun or something where they're fine
00:19:37weed any other substances or anything i got you okay no basically um be honest with me did you take
00:19:44any items from some people in trouble that we could that we could somehow get back to them
00:19:57i found something in my son's closet wrapped in a plastic bag i think it's a human head
00:20:07i was right then and he stared at me give the gunshot one to the neck gunshot one to the
00:20:11neck go go go go go
00:20:13extreme caution don't let him out of your sight if you're in here make yourself known where's he at
00:20:21crime in progress new episodes watch now part of crime and investigation only on a and e
00:20:36Did someone else take some items that you were with?
00:20:46Because you know what happens is when we go through,
00:20:48we pull surveillance video everywhere, right?
00:20:51The trail park and all that.
00:20:52So there's cameras on facet, there's cameras further down.
00:20:56So I just don't want you caught in a line with that, okay?
00:21:00So I'm asking you to honestly, be honest,
00:21:03if you were at that trail park...
00:21:06No.
00:21:09I was just sleeping.
00:21:10You were at home the whole time?
00:21:12Yeah.
00:21:13And if it shows that you weren't in the house
00:21:15and you actually left, what then?
00:21:18Yeah, you could show me later.
00:21:20Okay.
00:21:30Hey, how's it going, man?
00:21:31Vantine turns to the younger brother.
00:21:34Now, I'm going to be honest with you.
00:21:35Some items were taken from some people
00:21:39at a trailer park further down the road.
00:21:42Did you go over to that trailer park?
00:21:43I don't got nothing from nobody.
00:21:47Was home all day yesterday.
00:21:49So you stayed there the entire time?
00:21:50I was home all day yesterday.
00:21:52As a man, that's your word.
00:21:53Yeah, I was home all day yesterday.
00:21:55Okay.
00:21:57I'll be right back.
00:22:05So I can't say 100% that they're involved.
00:22:07I just know that right now,
00:22:10you have the path leading to their apartment.
00:22:13You have a man that's saying from the still images
00:22:16that two of them look like kids
00:22:18that belong to that apartment.
00:22:19And the fact that I feel just from interviewing
00:22:24that they're lying about last night
00:22:26it kind of leads me to believe they're involved,
00:22:28but we'll see.
00:22:29Search warrant's going to be completed.
00:22:31Maybe there's a weapon in there.
00:22:32You never know.
00:22:33Cam is still talking to the mother.
00:22:36Maybe we'll get more information from her.
00:22:42So I'm going to be honest with you.
00:22:44So there was an incident that happened
00:22:45across the street at the trailer park on Stahl.
00:22:49Some Hispanics were robbed.
00:22:51And in the process, there were some individuals
00:22:53that shot at a trailer.
00:22:55And we arrived on Stahl and found a male deceased
00:22:59who was sleeping in this trailer.
00:23:02Those subjects then ran towards the apartments
00:23:04of where y'all are staying.
00:23:07And one of your sons were in the Kia just sitting there.
00:23:11And there had been a number of Kias stolen from the area.
00:23:15Do you know any reason why either one of your sons
00:23:17would be inside that Kia?
00:23:19They shouldn't be.
00:23:20Listen, I worked on the trailer
00:23:23in the room because they were night-night.
00:23:24Just now.
00:23:26I really see my kids sometimes.
00:23:29I work in Brimble.
00:23:30I got a goal to accomplish.
00:23:32I don't want this for them.
00:23:33I want better.
00:23:36Now, I can tell you,
00:23:37I'm not going to lie for my kids
00:23:38if I leave at home yesterday.
00:23:40Now, if they dead broke in that car,
00:23:43then they've got to deal with the consequences.
00:23:45Yeah.
00:23:47There's no reason for them to have to do anything like this
00:23:51because I give them what they want.
00:23:53We're just following our leads
00:23:54and going upon our investigation.
00:23:57Have you ever seen either one of your sons
00:23:59carrying a firearm before?
00:24:00I don't like them.
00:24:04You know, that's just,
00:24:05I feel like what you need a gun for.
00:24:08But at no point in time yesterday
00:24:10you recall your sons leaving?
00:24:13No, they didn't leave.
00:24:15All right.
00:24:15Just give me a second, all right?
00:24:16All right.
00:24:20They're saying they're at home the entire time.
00:24:22Yeah, that's what she's saying.
00:24:24I feel like she would tell me otherwise.
00:24:27I honestly do believe
00:24:29as much as she was telling them
00:24:31to calm down on scene,
00:24:33like be respectful,
00:24:34I feel like she would tell us
00:24:35if they weren't in the house.
00:24:38Did we ask them anything about the car?
00:24:40The Kia.
00:24:42One of them were in the Kia.
00:24:44I didn't ask him.
00:24:46I'll ask the other one.
00:24:49Hey, quick question too.
00:24:50There's a Kia that's parked out there.
00:24:52Were you inside that vehicle at all?
00:24:54What about your brother?
00:24:56Any of y'all inside that vehicle?
00:24:58Mm-hmm.
00:24:59Do you know who that vehicle belongs to?
00:25:01No.
00:25:02Do you know where it came from?
00:25:04Mm-hmm.
00:25:07All right.
00:25:13We don't know whose car is it.
00:25:15Same answer from the other guy.
00:25:18They don't know anything about the car
00:25:19and they're not in it.
00:25:21Those people put you in it.
00:25:23I think they're lying about that.
00:25:25Whether they're involved in this murder,
00:25:26I do not know.
00:25:27But we'll find out once we get the search warrant,
00:25:29we get more information from pulling the video cameras.
00:25:32At least we've locked them into statements.
00:25:34That's the important thing.
00:25:34We've locked them into statements
00:25:35so we can either validate those statements
00:25:37or we can disprove them at this point.
00:25:39So we'll see what happens.
00:25:45Then...
00:25:46Hold on a second.
00:25:47Detective Pritchard calls in
00:25:48from the apartment complex.
00:25:50Well, we got video from before the shooting
00:25:51that shows those kids leaving this apartment.
00:25:54About what time?
00:25:562141, it looks like.
00:25:582141-ish.
00:25:59The video shows three men leaving the complex
00:26:0210 minutes before the call to 911.
00:26:05Just check your email or your text.
00:26:07Yeah, I got it coming through.
00:26:13That's their building.
00:26:15Mm-hmm.
00:26:23Yeah, what's up?
00:26:31And I'm bound to go.
00:26:45Keep on riding.
00:26:47I've got one more silver dollar there.
00:26:53But I'm not gonna let them catch me, no.
00:26:56I'm gonna let them catch the midnight rally.
00:27:06I was literally going 39 miles per hour on 35.
00:27:11Are you just looking at the speedway?
00:27:15Look at me.
00:27:16I'm gonna make your bond so high,
00:27:18your head will spontaneously combust.
00:27:22You're not listening, so this is great.
00:27:24You're as great as the trooper is.
00:27:27Court Cam.
00:27:28New episodes.
00:27:29Watch now.
00:27:30Part of Crime and Investigation.
00:27:31Only on A&E.
00:27:41100% that's them, the shoes, the camo jacket.
00:27:50Where are they coming from now?
00:27:52You can't see no one on the face.
00:27:57Does it have them coming back?
00:27:58Yeah, we have a video of them coming back after you.
00:28:01I haven't seen one.
00:28:02Put this on the big screen of the computer,
00:28:04just so we can kind of get a better look at them.
00:28:11Here they are coming down six to ten minutes before the murder.
00:28:15The doorbell video is from an apartment below the brothers.
00:28:19We don't have them coming out of the actual apartment.
00:28:22We have them coming down the stairs.
00:28:35Let's print out the image of this.
00:28:39I'll go and talk to the mom,
00:28:40and then we'll try to get her to identify them.
00:28:44You ready?
00:28:46Hey, how's it going?
00:28:48I'm Detective Bantime.
00:28:53Who's who?
00:28:59Jack don't look like none of them.
00:29:03Let me see.
00:29:05I don't know nobody who got green and white shoes.
00:29:07Nobody in my house, Dr. Dorsey.
00:29:10All right, I'll show you something real quick.
00:29:11This is the video.
00:29:13Detective Cam Miller shows her the surveillance video
00:29:15from the crime scene.
00:29:18Oh, I don't know.
00:29:20Listen to me for a second.
00:29:21And I get it.
00:29:22You're their mom.
00:29:22You're supposed to protect them.
00:29:23Well, and I wouldn't lie for them either
00:29:26because right is right and wrong is wrong.
00:29:28And I'm going to be honest.
00:29:30I don't know who this is.
00:29:32I don't know.
00:29:34I do not know.
00:29:35I'm telling you.
00:29:37These green and white shoes, I never saw before.
00:29:40Okay.
00:29:42Okay.
00:29:54She's denying, basically knowing anybody.
00:29:56I would bet money they're involved, but we'll see.
00:29:59You have to get more.
00:30:04Then...
00:30:04Perfect.
00:30:05The team searching the brothers' apartment reaches out.
00:30:09So they found 9mm handguns in there,
00:30:12and there are 9mm blazers.
00:30:14They recovered two stolen guns and ammunition
00:30:17that's the same brand as the casings found at the crime scene.
00:30:21I think we're on the right track here.
00:30:23That's good news.
00:30:24That would tie that apartment definitively.
00:30:27We'll test fire them here,
00:30:29and one of those weapons will hopefully match.
00:30:32So I'll confront them on it.
00:30:38Hey, how's it going, man?
00:30:43So, um, a couple 9mm were found in your house.
00:30:48I've got the cameras.
00:30:49I've got video of you leaving.
00:30:53I want to know,
00:30:55yesterday night,
00:30:55who was with you when you went over to the trailers?
00:30:58I didn't let the other guys know you.
00:31:02Where did the guns come from
00:31:03that were inside your apartment?
00:31:08Hmm?
00:31:12Your cousins?
00:31:14Was your cousin with you last night?
00:31:19But not last night.
00:31:22So he wasn't involved?
00:31:26So all I've got right now is you and your brother.
00:31:28That's a problem for you and your brother.
00:31:31I need you to come clean with me
00:31:33if there's a third person.
00:31:36Or if you're the one who f***ed up,
00:31:38then say you f***ed up.
00:31:40And don't drag the other two down.
00:31:45Which one's you?
00:32:09He says he recognizes the men in the video
00:32:12from another apartment.
00:32:13David, our apartment right here,
00:32:16there's other dudes that'll break down inside of us.
00:32:19Do you have them type of jackets?
00:32:20Do you know their names?
00:32:24No.
00:32:31Let me check.
00:32:33Yeah.
00:32:39The original ring camera footage
00:32:41that was sent to me,
00:32:42he's got even more.
00:32:44The owner of the doorbell camera
00:32:46sends additional video clips.
00:32:55He comes and picks up laundry at 10 o'clock.
00:32:58Mm-hmm.
00:33:00The video confirms
00:33:01the younger brother was at home
00:33:03at the time of the murder.
00:33:08Hmm.
00:33:10Okay, so he's ruled out completely.
00:33:13They're going to test fire the gun.
00:33:15And right now, eyeballing it,
00:33:17they think it doesn't match
00:33:18is what we're getting at.
00:33:20The casings from the crime scene
00:33:22do not appear to have been fired
00:33:24from the recovered weapons.
00:33:29These aren't the guys.
00:33:31It's someone else
00:33:33that just happened to come
00:33:34from the apartments where they are.
00:33:42Which apartment was he saying?
00:33:45They said the one next door
00:33:46went right to the left.
00:33:48That's a good one.
00:33:53Obviously, if you smell anything,
00:33:55let everybody get out
00:33:56and we'll detain everybody
00:33:57like we did the first time.
00:34:05You ready?
00:34:05You can come on here.
00:34:06I'll get you out of here.
00:34:10That's just bad luck.
00:34:12It was looking like
00:34:14these were going to be our guys.
00:34:16Sometimes you get it wrong,
00:34:17but you just don't know
00:34:18until you question them
00:34:19and try to get to the truth
00:34:19of the matter.
00:34:20They did have stolen guns
00:34:22and a stolen vehicle
00:34:23in their possession,
00:34:24so they are involved
00:34:25with criminal activity,
00:34:27just not what we're
00:34:28investigating right now.
00:34:29We let them go.
00:34:30We can always charge them later
00:34:31if we want to.
00:34:32No rush on it right now.
00:34:34I mean, I'm frustrated
00:34:35that it didn't turn out,
00:34:36but the positive side is
00:34:38where that apartment is,
00:34:39the upstairs,
00:34:40these are our guys.
00:34:41So at least we have
00:34:43these three are 100%,
00:34:45so now it's just a matter
00:34:46of if we can identify them.
00:34:48And this one is the one
00:34:50that fired the shots on camera.
00:34:52So nice to figure out
00:34:53who he is.
00:34:54If we identify
00:34:55all four of these subjects,
00:34:57all four will be charged
00:34:57with murder.
00:34:59Hand of one, hand of all.
00:35:28I have a male
00:35:30wearing a camouflage hoodie.
00:35:32Who's in and out that apartment?
00:35:33Miller recovers more
00:35:34doorbell video
00:35:35from an apartment
00:35:36across from the potential suspects.
00:35:39Oh, oh, hold on.
00:35:40That might be our guy.
00:35:41One of the suspects
00:35:44had a camo jacket on.
00:35:45He's got a camo jacket.
00:35:48She's here.
00:35:48He wears it all.
00:35:51I think we have enough video
00:35:56to maybe do a facial wreck.
00:35:58We're on the right track.
00:35:59We got some stuff
00:36:00to go off of
00:36:01and just kind of follow up on it.
00:36:10Later that night...
00:36:11So I have these pictures
00:36:13that we got
00:36:14from this ring camera
00:36:15that's across the hall.
00:36:16So what I'm going to do
00:36:17is I'm going to take that picture
00:36:18and put it into Verkata
00:36:19and see what pops up.
00:36:23Our Verkata cameras
00:36:24are a city asset camera
00:36:25that we pay for to install.
00:36:27Two years ago,
00:36:29the city of North Charleston
00:36:30added over 700 surveillance cameras
00:36:32across the city
00:36:33to help reduce crime
00:36:34and improve police response time.
00:36:36They record things
00:36:37at major intersections.
00:36:38We can see everything
00:36:39from shootings
00:36:40to robberies
00:36:41to collisions
00:36:42to petty larcenies.
00:36:44They're extremely used
00:36:44for one of the best tools we have.
00:36:46The facial recognition software
00:36:48for Verkata,
00:36:48it's a very new feature
00:36:49they just added.
00:36:51It'll show up
00:36:51a bunch of different pictures
00:36:52who could possibly look like
00:36:54who I'm looking for.
00:36:56Okay,
00:36:57so I just put these
00:36:58into Verkata.
00:36:59What do you think, Malone?
00:37:01Come take a look at this real quick.
00:37:03This guy pops up right here
00:37:05with that exact same camo jacket.
00:37:09This was earlier that day,
00:37:11Thursday, April 25th.
00:37:14That's possibly one of the suspects
00:37:16right there.
00:37:26I found something
00:37:27in my son's closet
00:37:28wrapping up top of the bag.
00:37:31I think it's a human head.
00:37:33Start fire!
00:37:35Get down!
00:37:36I was right there
00:37:37and he stared at me.
00:37:39He has a gunshot
00:37:39onto the neck.
00:37:40Gunshot onto the neck.
00:37:41Go, go, go, go, go, go.
00:37:42Extreme caution.
00:37:44Don't let him out of your sight.
00:37:45Hands up!
00:37:47If you're in here,
00:37:48make yourself know
00:37:49where's he at?
00:37:50Crime in Progress.
00:37:52New episodes.
00:37:52Watch now.
00:37:53Part of Crime and Investigation
00:37:54only on A&E.
00:38:04That looks like the guy
00:38:05from the ring camera video
00:38:07of his camo jacket right here.
00:38:10So we're seeing
00:38:11a potential suspect
00:38:12wearing similar clothes
00:38:13the same day as the shooting.
00:38:19He's walking alongside
00:38:20another male
00:38:21who's wearing similar clothes
00:38:23to what one of the other shooters
00:38:25is wearing.
00:38:26This dude looks like
00:38:27this dude right here.
00:38:29And then
00:38:30this guy right here
00:38:31with the long black shirt,
00:38:32dark pants,
00:38:33and the black shoes
00:38:34looks like this guy right here.
00:38:37I think that could be
00:38:38two of our guys right there.
00:38:41This varicata camera
00:38:43is located
00:38:44in our East Montague area.
00:38:46There is a school
00:38:47just down the street.
00:38:48Maybe somebody at the school
00:38:49would recognize those two.
00:38:50And then we're going
00:38:51to send these images
00:38:52up to SLED.
00:38:53That's our South Carolina
00:38:54law enforcement division.
00:38:56They have a lot of resources
00:38:57that we don't have.
00:38:58Hopefully,
00:38:59we can at least get the ID
00:39:00of two of the suspects
00:39:01out of the four.
00:39:10The next afternoon.
00:39:16This is apartment 13.
00:39:18And this
00:39:20is a guy
00:39:21that associates there.
00:39:25I heard back from Reeves.
00:39:27He talked to the school
00:39:28resource officer.
00:39:29We have identified him
00:39:30as Tristan Robertson.
00:39:33He's the one
00:39:33in the camel jacket.
00:39:37His DMV photo,
00:39:39he's also wearing
00:39:39a camel jacket.
00:39:4319-year-old
00:39:43Tristan Robertson,
00:39:45a former student
00:39:46at North Charleston High School,
00:39:47has no prior convictions.
00:39:50Now, look who he's walking with.
00:39:51The body build
00:39:53of this guy.
00:39:54Doesn't that not look
00:39:54very similar
00:39:55to this person?
00:39:57The South Carolina
00:39:58law enforcement division
00:39:59ran the photo
00:40:00in their database
00:40:01and got a hit.
00:40:04Facial rag
00:40:05identified him
00:40:06as Kobe Bryant.
00:40:08He was convicted
00:40:09of strong-arm robbery.
00:40:10He also got convicted
00:40:12for failure to stop
00:40:12for blue lights,
00:40:13so he's known to run.
00:40:14After serving
00:40:1510 months in jail
00:40:16for larceny
00:40:17and receiving stolen goods,
00:40:1922-year-old Kobe Bryant
00:40:21was released
00:40:22six months ago.
00:40:25I think this is Tristan.
00:40:27I don't know
00:40:27who this is.
00:40:28I think this is Kobe.
00:40:30So we're going to do
00:40:31like a workup on them,
00:40:32see if they're
00:40:33on probation,
00:40:35what their phone number is,
00:40:37all that.
00:40:37I hope we can
00:40:38get these guys
00:40:39in custody,
00:40:40because once we catch
00:40:41at least one of them,
00:40:42they'll hopefully
00:40:42snitch on the others.
00:40:50As the clock
00:40:51winds down...
00:40:52I'm Detective Vantine.
00:40:53I'm assigned to the case
00:40:54for both the robbery
00:40:55and the homicide.
00:41:08So...
00:41:08So...
00:41:08we've got a description
00:41:09of possible suspects.
00:41:11Now, today,
00:41:12we've got possible names,
00:41:14and we're trying
00:41:14to piece that together.
00:41:16So we're actually
00:41:17a lot closer
00:41:18than we were.
00:41:20Sometimes these investigations
00:41:21take time.
00:41:22Let them know
00:41:23the second we make an arrest,
00:41:24the second we make an arrest,
00:41:25they are the first people
00:41:27we will call
00:41:27and let them know.
00:41:31Oh, definitely.
00:41:32We're working hard,
00:41:32trust me.
00:41:33We are doing
00:41:33our best we can.
00:41:34So, this is important,
00:41:36Detective,
00:41:36that they understand.
00:41:37Es importante que tienen...
00:41:38Esto se toma tiempo.
00:41:40This takes time.
00:41:41Yeah.
00:41:42Ellos están trabajando
00:41:43on-gone, okay?
00:41:45Pero...
00:41:46Pero yo sé...
00:41:47Aquà tiene la mejor policÃa
00:41:49de toda esta área.
00:41:50The best police department
00:41:52there is,
00:41:52no Charleston, period.
00:41:54They're the best.
00:41:55You don't worry about that.
00:41:56Solo let them work, right?
00:41:58And work with the situation,
00:41:59but they need time.
00:42:01It's gonna be okay.
00:42:02Okay.
00:42:03Estamos...
00:42:18In the first 48,
00:42:20North Charleston detectives
00:42:22responded to the murder
00:42:23of Heriberto Martinez Martinez,
00:42:25killed in his sleep
00:42:26by a stray bullet
00:42:27during a robbery,
00:42:28spoke to the robbery victims
00:42:30who said four men
00:42:31fled the scene,
00:42:32firing as they ran.
00:42:33discovered video surveillance
00:42:35that tracked three of the men
00:42:36to an apartment complex
00:42:38near the crime scene,
00:42:39identified two of the possible suspects
00:42:41as Tristan Robertson
00:42:42and Kobe Bryant,
00:42:44but all four suspects
00:42:45are still at large.
00:42:56Two days later...
00:42:58One of our guys
00:42:59that I think we've identified
00:43:00in the photo,
00:43:02Kobe Bryant,
00:43:02is gonna meet with his PO.
00:43:05Detectives head out to meet
00:43:06with Kobe's parole officers,
00:43:08hoping to question Kobe.
00:43:10We just want to talk to him,
00:43:11see about if he will identify himself,
00:43:13and also see if his PO
00:43:14will identify him
00:43:15from that photo
00:43:16that we have.
00:43:25Thank you so much
00:43:27for meeting with us.
00:43:28I'm Detective Vanton.
00:43:29Nice to meet you.
00:43:30Same here.
00:43:31We'll show you a photo.
00:43:33Yep, that looks like him.
00:43:36That definitely had to tell
00:43:37it's Kobe.
00:43:38That's Kobe?
00:43:38Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:43:41Is he pretty cooperative?
00:43:42Would he talk with us?
00:43:43I think so.
00:43:43Because believe it or not,
00:43:44he doesn't want to go back to jail.
00:43:46Helps us.
00:43:47Like, we'll try our best
00:43:48to help him.
00:43:50Let's text him.
00:43:50You said 10 minutes.
00:43:51Okay.
00:43:53Thank you, guys.
00:43:54Yeah.
00:43:56Well, that's a good sign
00:43:57she's pretty much thinking
00:43:58that's him.
00:43:59And it's just a matter of
00:44:01getting him to just say,
00:44:02that's me.
00:44:03And once he admits that,
00:44:05we have him.
00:44:06And all we have to do
00:44:08at that point is
00:44:10see if he'll give up
00:44:11the other names.
00:44:17Hey, he's got him
00:44:18appropriately with his big pants.
00:44:20He's pulling around.
00:44:21He's going to pay you
00:44:22from there, should he?
00:44:23Yeah, I see him.
00:44:24I see him.
00:44:25You see him?
00:44:25Yes, ma'am.
00:44:30I'm going to go hot.
00:44:31Come on.
00:44:36Kobe spots the detectives
00:44:39and takes off.
00:45:04Can I have an EMS to the
00:45:06Lonnie Hamilton building?
00:45:08Myself and a suspect.
00:45:09We fell after a brief
00:45:10foot chase.
00:45:16He just took off running.
00:45:18I caught him on the other
00:45:19side of the parking lot.
00:45:23We just wanted to talk to him,
00:45:24so it makes it look a little
00:45:26weird that he just takes off
00:45:27running as soon as we get out
00:45:28to the car.
00:45:31Hey, come here.
00:45:33Kobe Bryant's parole officer
00:45:35approaches Miller.
00:45:48Inside the car is the other person of interest, Tristan Robertson.
00:46:15While Colby is taken to the hospital for evaluation, Tristan is detained for questioning.
00:46:21We've got Tristan and Colby.
00:46:23Tristan was in the backseat to work out.
00:46:26Hopefully he'll talk to us, though, because they're not happy right now.
00:46:36That's Tristan Robertson.
00:46:38I'm going to go in and try to interview him, see if he'll admit that he's in the photos.
00:46:43What do y'all need?
00:46:44A few kind words, some support.
00:46:46You got this.
00:46:47You want a chest bump? You want me to punch you in the chest?
00:46:51Okay.
00:46:51Come on, I'm going in to hurt him.
00:46:55Hey, man, you need any water or anything?
00:46:57You sure?
00:47:01Okay, I'll try to get you home as quick as I can.
00:47:04Obviously, you saw what happened out there, right?
00:47:06Running and all that.
00:47:10I know. That's awesome, dude.
00:47:12How old are you, man?
00:47:1319.
00:47:1419?
00:47:15What grade did you complete in school?
00:47:17You got your GED or anything?
00:47:19I got you.
00:47:20You go and work on that?
00:47:22Sweet. What do you do for a living, though?
00:47:25Oh, okay. I got you.
00:47:28No, basically, I just want to talk to you about some things.
00:47:30I want to show you some pictures.
00:47:32That's it.
00:47:33I don't know why he did what he did, but we'll talk to him as well.
00:47:37I want to show a picture.
00:47:41This is off of, like, Jenkins Avenue.
00:47:43This is April 25th, which is a Thursday.
00:47:46Ventine shows Tristan the photo from city cameras,
00:47:50taken six hours before the homicide.
00:47:53What happened to you?
00:47:55Do you have a camouflage jacket like that?
00:47:57No.
00:47:58I used to when I was...
00:48:00That was back in 2021.
00:48:03That how me...
00:48:04I don't know.
00:48:05That's not me.
00:48:08I was with my granny Thursday and Friday.
00:48:11Where's your granny house?
00:48:13West Ashley.
00:48:14There is, is, because...
00:48:15So, there was an incident that happened on Thursday night.
00:48:19Where?
00:48:20Around Midland Park and Stahl.
00:48:23I think you were with some people that messed up...
00:48:26Yes.
00:48:26I'm asking you, trying to treat you as a witness here.
00:48:30That's not me, though.
00:48:32I'm telling you, that's not me.
00:48:33Where I was at, you can call my dad and my grandma.
00:48:36So, you stayed in West Ashley the entire time on Friday?
00:48:39I got you.
00:48:41Ventine shows him another photo taken by a city camera
00:48:44the day after the shooting.
00:48:49So, you're saying that ain't you?
00:48:51That looked like North Charleston.
00:48:53Yeah, it's North Charleston.
00:48:54But you're saying you and West Ashley on this date.
00:49:04You're saying, like, the pictures are completely wrong?
00:49:06Like, we could...
00:49:06I don't know.
00:49:07That's...
00:49:07I don't know.
00:49:07Like, how is there a picture of you
00:49:09in an area that you're claiming you're not?
00:49:11We have cameras all over the city.
00:49:13We have cameras all over Stahl Road.
00:49:14We have cameras all over the facet.
00:49:16You see what I'm saying?
00:49:17I was not on Stahl Road.
00:49:21I don't know what you're talking about,
00:49:22what happened on Stahl Road.
00:49:23I was not on Stahl Road.
00:49:25You can just get me a look.
00:49:27I don't know what it's going on.
00:49:29Okay.
00:49:32I'll be back.
00:49:33I told you where I was at, so...
00:49:34You sit tight.
00:49:38Real tight.
00:49:46He's just denying everything.
00:49:47He didn't know what to say after you showed him that last picture.
00:49:49No.
00:49:50He said, that's not me, and then lured up.
00:49:53Like, he literally said he's in West Ashley.
00:49:55He never left West Ashley.
00:50:02He didn't know what to say after you.
00:50:02A few minutes later...
00:50:04Hi, I tell you.
00:50:04...Kobe arrives at headquarters.
00:50:06How does that mean to talk to you in just a second?
00:50:08We'll get Detective Butler to try to talk to him.
00:50:11Maybe it'd be better that someone who wasn't on scene when he ran
00:50:13and ran after him would be probably better.
00:50:16He's requested to speak to Sergeant Mike Brown,
00:50:19who used to mentor him when he was a younger kid.
00:50:22The detective Kobe requested
00:50:24is currently working for the chief of police.
00:50:27So I'm going to get in contact with him
00:50:28to see if he'd be willing to come down and speak to Kobe.
00:50:31The murder's at 9.50 p.m.?
00:50:33Yeah.
00:50:33This is at 3.50 on the day of the murder.
00:50:36You get him to identify himself,
00:50:37that's going to be Kobe, and that's going to be Tristan.
00:50:41I just found this picture on Kobe's Facebook,
00:50:44and those shoes are the green Nike.
00:50:49The Facebook photo of Kobe
00:50:51was posted four months ago.
00:50:54His shoes match.
00:50:55If you watch the actual video,
00:50:56the shoes match from his picture there.
00:51:01All right, I'll go talk to him.
00:51:12Butler shows him a photo from a city camera
00:51:15on the day of the shooting.
00:51:17I don't know who that is.
00:51:20No idea who that is?
00:51:21No.
00:51:25But you know what happened Thursday?
00:51:26No, I don't know what happened Thursday.
00:51:30Let me ask you a question.
00:51:31You have some white and teal or bluish,
00:51:35like, high-top Nike or whatever?
00:51:37You know what I'm talking about?
00:51:38It's on your Facebook page.
00:51:44Hey, man.
00:51:45That's what you're asking for, right?
00:51:46Yeah.
00:51:47I go and see the race law for the day.
00:51:49Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on.
00:51:51Hold on, Kobe, hold on.
00:51:52You know how we roll, right?
00:51:54Sure.
00:51:55You have those shoes, right?
00:51:56No.
00:51:57Not them.
00:51:58Did you give those shoes to somebody?
00:52:00No, they were supposed to give them to me.
00:52:01But I didn't give them.
00:52:03I left them at a friend's house.
00:52:04When?
00:52:05Long time.
00:52:07Okay.
00:52:08All right.
00:52:08We can talk to you for a minute.
00:52:13Listen, man.
00:52:14How long have we known each other?
00:52:16Long time.
00:52:17Long time.
00:52:18I know your family, right?
00:52:22I know you.
00:52:24And that may be the case,
00:52:25but they don't have you up here for no reason.
00:52:29I've been doing this for a long time.
00:52:30I'm telling you 100%,
00:52:32everything that they're asking you,
00:52:34they know the answers to for the most part.
00:52:36They're not just asking you for no reason.
00:52:39This is your opportunity
00:52:41to help yourself out
00:52:42as best you can.
00:52:44There's only one thing I need from you.
00:52:46What's that?
00:52:47I need for you to at least tell me the truth.
00:53:08I don't want to see you throw your life away, dude.
00:53:12Me neither.
00:53:13I just come home.
00:53:14So I can get my life back together.
00:53:17Right.
00:53:18And I don't want to see anything happen to you.
00:53:20But if you're not telling the truth,
00:53:22you know what's going to happen.
00:53:24But I had nothing to do with this situation.
00:53:26I had nothing to do with it.
00:53:27I don't even know what's going on.
00:53:30I'm not saying that you did anything,
00:53:32that you shot somebody.
00:53:35But I know you might be a witness to it.
00:53:37Witness to a murder?
00:53:40I didn't know nothing about no murder, no nothing.
00:53:43I didn't know it was something that happened
00:53:45on Star Road last week.
00:53:46I saw on Facebook.
00:53:49So what happened?
00:53:50I don't know.
00:53:50They said somebody being robbed or some shit
00:53:52that they get in the armed robbery with you.
00:53:54I guess one person died of some shit.
00:53:56I don't know nothing about the shit.
00:53:57I'd be in my cow's house.
00:53:59I'd be at her.
00:54:00And I'd be home.
00:54:01Other than that, I don't be in no way else.
00:54:05You know there's a difference between being a suspect
00:54:08and a witness, right?
00:54:10I ain't a witness.
00:54:11What's the difference?
00:54:12I ain't a suspect.
00:54:13I'm an innocent bystander.
00:54:15Right.
00:54:15And what's a witness?
00:54:17Someone has knowledge of me.
00:54:18I don't got knowledge of shit.
00:54:20Right.
00:54:20So there's two different things.
00:54:22Yeah.
00:54:22I guess I don't have to be real.
00:54:23I don't have knowledge of what happened Thursday night.
00:54:25And I was not a suspect of shit that happened Thursday night.
00:54:29I got you.
00:54:29I understand what you're saying.
00:54:32What you trying to say?
00:54:33I'm trying to understand what's going on.
00:54:36I wasn't there.
00:54:38And if I was, then I would have told you what's there,
00:54:40but I wasn't there.
00:54:43What if there's something that shows different?
00:54:45If something shows different, then I ain't me.
00:54:48I ain't me.
00:54:50I don't want to be anywhere else.
00:54:53All right.
00:54:54It's Sergeant Bailey.
00:54:56So, man.
00:54:56So, I know you've been in here talking to Sergeant Brown,
00:55:01because I've been listening.
00:55:02He's not lying to you when he tells you that we have a lot more
00:55:05than what you think we have.
00:55:07I want to lay some stuff down on the table for you, all right?
00:55:11Because we've been investigating this thing since it happened last Thursday night.
00:55:15All right.
00:55:16So, you know that the city has thousands of cameras around it?
00:55:21I mean, pretty sure live.
00:55:23Yeah.
00:55:23Let's just make this real easy, okay?
00:55:26Who is that?
00:55:30You.
00:55:31Okay.
00:55:31I'm not trying to trick you.
00:55:33All right.
00:55:33What's the time frame on that?
00:55:35427.
00:55:37Okay.
00:55:38This is East Montague.
00:55:40I'm trying to jog your memory.
00:55:42All right?
00:55:42Same area.
00:55:43Same day.
00:55:47Who's that?
00:55:48Bailey shows him a photo of Tristan.
00:55:51What the f*** my lawyer?
00:55:52What the f*** my lawyer?
00:55:54What the f*** my lawyer?
00:55:56What the f*** my lawyer?
00:55:59I don't know who that is.
00:56:01You don't know who that is?
00:56:02I met him today.
00:56:04I know.
00:56:05I met him today.
00:56:06I don't know who that is.
00:56:11You met him today?
00:56:12Yes.
00:56:13Kobe, you don't lie to the million dollars?
00:56:15Look at me.
00:56:16You met him the day when you went to this man on Thursday.
00:56:19It's not a trick question.
00:56:21Thursday?
00:56:22All right, Thursday.
00:56:22Like I said, I was trying to see my P.O.
00:56:25Somehow, somehow, he was there.
00:56:30Okay.
00:56:31You have to understand what I'm trying to tell you.
00:56:33You're in a situation.
00:56:35I know I'm in this situation.
00:56:37Yeah, I want you to understand how bad this situation is.
00:56:39It ain't got nothing to do with me.
00:56:40And I've got your P.O. telling me when they watch your video,
00:56:44this person right here?
00:56:48That dude, right there.
00:56:50Supposed to be me, huh?
00:56:52See saying that, is he?
00:56:55If you're with Tristan.
00:56:57All these bitches, I tell y'all,
00:56:58I got me in this s***.
00:56:59Fine, there's nothing wrong in this s***.
00:57:04So, you're admitting that's you?
00:57:05No.
00:57:06That's me.
00:57:06All right.
00:57:07That's me.
00:57:07That's me.
00:57:08And that's me.
00:57:09This s*** ain't me.
00:57:11I got black hat on in these bitches.
00:57:13Where the s*** green hat comes from?
00:57:14I don't know.
00:57:14A jacket.
00:57:15The thing I'm trying to let you know is all these guys right here,
00:57:19people away from this apartment complex,
00:57:21which is less than 300 yards away from where the incident location happened,
00:57:25wearing the same flu.
00:57:26I don't got no green hat.
00:57:29I don't care what you got.
00:57:31What's wrong with you, Kobe?
00:57:32I have not seen any of this.
00:57:33All right, over here.
00:57:34You share with Sergeant Bailey more than you share with me,
00:57:37and I know you.
00:57:38All right, but...
00:57:39Kobe, I know you.
00:57:40I don't make me feel.
00:57:42But you didn't tell me about any of this.
00:57:44I didn't know he has none of this s***.
00:57:45I'm not going to ask you.
00:57:47I'm not going to ask you.
00:57:47I'm not going to ask you.
00:57:48I'm going to speak to my lawyer.
00:57:50All right, yeah.
00:57:51I'm going to speak to my lawyer, bro.
00:57:52I'm not going to speak to my lawyer.
00:57:54I'm leaving.
00:57:54He's staying as your friend.
00:57:55I'm leaving.
00:57:56I don't got no friends.
00:57:57I don't got no friends.
00:57:58I'm going to speak to my lawyer.
00:58:00I understand.
00:58:01But, Kobe, listen to what I'm telling you.
00:58:03Turn around, man.
00:58:04Let's talk.
00:58:05Turn around.
00:58:05Yo, who's talking?
00:58:07That's disrespectful to turn your back on me.
00:58:09You remember, y'all didn't get me s***.
00:58:10Y'all seen I was a violent armed robbery.
00:58:12I was some s***.
00:58:12I'm not talking about that no more.
00:58:14All right.
00:58:15I'm here for you.
00:58:17I think this is the best detective unit in the state.
00:58:20Probably in the world.
00:58:22They're great at what they do.
00:58:24They'll find the truth.
00:58:25I guarantee you that.
00:58:26They'll find it, but I wasn't there.
00:58:27They'll find the truth.
00:58:29Yeah.
00:58:30I'm always around, so...
00:58:31Call me if you need to talk to me about this.
00:58:34All right.
00:58:40He lowered it up, so it's not...
00:58:41Oh, he didn't can do that.
00:58:42Oh, yeah, he lowered it up.
00:58:43He was being faced with too much music.
00:58:45But I did leave him with, I'll be here.
00:58:49I can just have somebody call me.
00:58:50We'll talk it out.
00:58:52When I got the call that he was down here, I had to get prepared to put the Big Brother
00:58:57coat on.
00:58:58Sergeant Mike Brown first met Kobe several years ago as a school resource officer.
00:59:02I played football with his uncle in high school.
00:59:06And he walked up to me like, hey, you know my family.
00:59:09And so we formed a pretty good rapport, good relationship.
00:59:12And I always kept that door open with him like, hey, man, if you need something, I'm there for you.
00:59:18But in this case, it's different.
00:59:20I mean, it's a murder.
00:59:21So it's kind of hard to break that barrier right now.
00:59:25Probation officer called just now.
00:59:28Yeah.
00:59:30Kobe's mom called her.
00:59:32She found credit cards and debit cards with Hispanic names in Christian's room.
00:59:37According to the parole officer, the cards were found in a bedroom shared by Kobe's two younger brothers.
00:59:44Kobe's got a brother named Christian and a brother named Jameson.
00:59:52Christian Bryant?
00:59:5420-year-old Christian Bryant has no prior convictions.
01:00:00This is Jameson Bryant.
01:00:0218-year-old Jameson Bryant also has no prior convictions.
01:00:06The thing is, is we have four suspects.
01:00:09So it could be all them and Tristan.
01:00:15That's what I'm thinking.
01:00:17It's going to be him, his two brothers, probably, and Tristan.
01:00:21That witness approach may be failing with him because he knows it's his brother.
01:00:25It's going to be the shooter.
01:00:27F***ing hell.
01:00:29Let's go.
01:00:30We've got to get a search warrant going.
01:00:31We need to get someone over there to get those.
01:00:34Give Tiffany the phone number.
01:00:36Because Tiffany's going to go with Gina and Cockrell.
01:00:42That's her apartment.
01:00:43That's her contact number.
01:00:45Okay.
01:00:47Really, if we can get the names on the cards, and then we'll still do a search warrant.
01:00:51I hope they come back to our victims.
01:00:54I think these are our guys.
01:01:01If the credit card comes back to one of the victims that was robbed, that would seal the deal.
01:01:21I'll put you on speaker.
01:01:23I'm going to repeat that.
01:01:25Caitlin just got a call back from the armed robbery victim.
01:01:28He confirmed that that bank card is his.
01:01:34Thank you so much.
01:01:36That's awesome.
01:01:36That's great news.
01:01:39Kofor's son fled the residence, and she doesn't know where they are.
01:01:44According to their mother, Christian and Jameson left home after hearing Kobe was detained and won't return her calls.
01:01:51Kobe is staying with his girlfriend, which is in Goose Creek.
01:01:55That means the clothing's probably in her house in Goose Creek.
01:01:58The team will get warrants to search Kobe's girlfriend's house and his mother's house for additional evidence.
01:02:05It's his two brothers.
01:02:06That's why he can't.
01:02:08That's why he won't play, because he can't ride on his brothers.
01:02:11I think with the credit card being found now that belonging to the victim, I think, obviously, murder charge on
01:02:17him.
01:02:17And there it's a game.
01:02:18I'm going to go murder on him.
01:02:19I'm going to go murder on him because he's with him before and after.
01:02:23What the f**k is going on?
01:02:26What the f**k is going on?
01:02:34I don't like the way this thing's going.
01:02:37Mouchan, should I go in jail?
01:02:40All right, where are you going to jail for?
01:02:41You just told me they found some stuff at your mama's household, and that's not cool.
01:02:47Like, that ain't cool, because I'm sure your mama ain't have nothing to do.
01:02:50She don't, and I don't either.
01:02:53So who has access to your mom's house besides you and your brothers?
01:02:56They don't.
01:02:57And my mom.
01:03:01So which one of them might be involved in this?
01:03:19Well, I don't know which one of them might have been involved in this.
01:03:21I don't know.
01:03:21I get it.
01:03:22I understand.
01:03:24It's tough.
01:03:28I can't point fingers like that.
01:03:29I can't take nothing but nothing.
01:03:33Put the charges on.
01:03:35They're probably going to charge you with murder.
01:03:37I charge you with murder, f**k.
01:03:40I don't know the f**k.
01:03:41I don't know the f**k.
01:03:42Don't put your mom through this, bro.
01:03:44Don't do it.
01:03:46You've got to be responsible for anything that you've done or anything that you have knowledge of.
01:03:53Really didn't find out my mama hollies?
01:03:54I don't know the f**k.
01:03:55I don't know the f**k.
01:04:00All right.
01:04:03If you know I'm talking to me, you know where I'm at.
01:04:05You know how to get in contact with me.
01:04:06Say anything I've told you before.
01:04:10He's not coming off me.
01:04:11He's going to tell on a brother, you know, so I understand, but it's what it is.
01:04:20Sounds like his brothers are involved.
01:04:24Some of the things may be at his mother's house.
01:04:26It's a sad situation, but it never has to happen this way.
01:04:30We all have choices.
01:04:30I told him if he wants to talk to us, he knows how to get in touch with me.
01:04:37All right.
01:04:37We're going to transport you to jail.
01:04:39What am I doing?
01:04:40Murder.
01:04:41Murder?
01:04:41Yeah, murder.
01:04:42Me?
01:04:43Yeah, you.
01:04:43How the f**k are they saying what?
01:04:45How are you getting murdered?
01:04:46Boy, that's a f**k.
01:04:47Stupid.
01:04:48That's not me, bro.
01:04:49Wrong person.
01:04:50Ain't no f**king murder.
01:04:51Well, you're being charged with murder.
01:04:52That's a f**king down, bro.
01:04:53That's a f**king down.
01:04:54Stupid as a kid to the jail, so.
01:04:56I just have a f**k.
01:04:57I'm trying to hurt you.
01:04:58Dumb-ass people.
01:04:59Dumb-ass a f**k.
01:05:02I'm taking that s**k all the way to the trial, nigga.
01:05:04I'm calling.
01:05:06It's been a good day.
01:05:07We actually got two suspects in custody for murder.
01:05:10So out of the three suspects, that's Tristan Robertson, and that's Kobe Bryant.
01:05:17This person we do not know, and he's the shooter.
01:05:20There's actually a fourth suspect that's not pictured here that shows up with them.
01:05:24I believe it's going to be his brothers.
01:05:26It's just now proving it.
01:05:37The next day.
01:05:41You want some water or something?
01:05:43No, I'm okay.
01:05:46This is Kobe's mom.
01:05:48Kobe's probation officer wrote me an email this morning saying that Kobe's mom wanted to talk
01:05:53to us.
01:05:54She wants to provide additional information because she thinks that her other son is involved
01:05:59to work the harm's hard.
01:06:02Breathe, breathe, breathe, breathe, breathe.
01:06:06Hello, man.
01:06:07Detective Bantime.
01:06:08Nice to meet you.
01:06:10I got here.
01:06:11Two sons that live with you are, um, uh, Christian with a K?
01:06:16Yes.
01:06:17And the other one is Jameson?
01:06:18Yes.
01:06:19Where are they now?
01:06:20I have no clue.
01:06:24When did Kobe move out?
01:06:26Kobe was gone for about a month, and I found out what I found out yesterday.
01:06:30Where'd you find out?
01:06:31Well, what I heard from Kobe's PO is that first he was being detained, and he was supposed
01:06:36to be a person of interest to the robbery.
01:06:40Um, and I was like, what?
01:06:42Like that?
01:06:42You know, I'm shocked.
01:06:44So she was just filling me in what's going on, and she said it was a Mexican person that
01:06:51died.
01:06:52I was like, what?
01:06:53I was like, it's funny when she said that.
01:06:55I was like, well, I found a Mexican check in my house Friday.
01:06:59Yes.
01:06:59When I went inside the room, it was sitting on the floor.
01:07:02So I picked it up, and I looked at it.
01:07:04And I'm like, I know for sure there's no bodies in my household.
01:07:07So when Christian got back, I was like, well, whose check is this?
01:07:10Oh, I found it on the ground.
01:07:12I said, well, why would you be stupid to pick it up and bring it home?
01:07:15Yes.
01:07:15Just get rid of it.
01:07:17He said he tore it up, and he threw it away.
01:07:21Sunday passed.
01:07:22I found another check.
01:07:24And there's a credit card, too.
01:07:25So now that everything is added up, I said, well, let me just let her know what's going
01:07:29on.
01:07:29You know what I'm saying?
01:07:30Yeah, yeah.
01:07:31Yeah.
01:07:31I really appreciate that.
01:07:34I know it's hard.
01:07:35Pull forward.
01:07:36I took it up on my kids.
01:07:39Tristan?
01:07:40I don't know who Tristan was.
01:07:41We got him.
01:07:43This definitely looks like him.
01:07:46That looks like him.
01:07:48And look at that one, too.
01:07:50Oh, yeah.
01:07:51That's definitely Jake.
01:07:53Which one is?
01:07:54That's definitely Jake.
01:07:56He's the only one that wears this third creature jacket.
01:07:59She IDs the suspected shooter as her 18-year-old son, Jameson.
01:08:06Do you think Christian would be with him?
01:08:08Do you think he'd be one of the guys running in the video?
01:08:14I'm not sure.
01:08:17All right.
01:08:18I can call him if you need me, too.
01:08:19Yeah, you can ask him.
01:08:21No.
01:08:21I'm going to just be scared at one time because, I mean, I don't have the time to shake a
01:08:25chord or something.
01:08:26It ain't.
01:08:29I'm going to ask you honestly, you got something to do with this wrong with you?
01:08:34Yeah, I do.
01:08:35I've been like them that wasn't involved.
01:08:38How do you mean you've been with them?
01:08:40I ain't got to be with them.
01:08:41So you've been there when the robber route they're playing, too?
01:08:44Because the surveillance touches I'm looking at.
01:08:46I expect all three of them look like y'all.
01:08:48Do you have been there, too?
01:08:51I need you to answer my question.
01:08:53Was Jameson with y'all?
01:08:55I knew what y'all did.
01:08:57When I found them checks and I asked you about them checks, why y'all did what y'all did?
01:09:01Y'all, you know somebody did?
01:09:02You're not involved in it.
01:09:06But you've been there when the robbery was going on?
01:09:09You don't want to speak on the phone.
01:09:11Would you like to come in and talk Christian right now?
01:09:13Because this is serious matter, too, y'all.
01:09:18If you ain't done nothing, then why are you running?
01:09:23I ain't the person that you...
01:09:26He said Jameson was with him?
01:09:28Yes.
01:09:29He said of course.
01:09:30Oh, is that what he said?
01:09:31I couldn't hear.
01:09:31Yeah.
01:09:32So that's all three of my kids and...
01:09:34And the other one.
01:09:35Yeah.
01:09:36So I don't know what else to do.
01:09:37No, you've done a lot.
01:09:38I appreciate you calling him and all that, and if you can convince him to come and meet
01:09:43with us at some point, not now, I mean, just, you know...
01:09:46No, he needs to come now.
01:09:47He knows that's why he hung up.
01:09:51I appreciate it.
01:09:53No problem.
01:09:54I think that's about it.
01:09:55I know we have your number.
01:09:57As far as a victim, I know I'm probably not allowed to reach out to them because they
01:10:01are my kids, do some things, but can I express my sympathy?
01:10:05You know, I do just apologize for it.
01:10:07I can't take it back, but you know, it's just not right at the end of the day.
01:10:11Oh, gosh.
01:10:12They make their own choices.
01:10:15Okay?
01:10:16Don't put that on you.
01:10:19Yeah, of course you can't come back.
01:10:22Then it wasn't because of choices you made.
01:10:26I'm fine.
01:10:27I'm not here to do.
01:10:28Okay.
01:10:29I'm trying to focus.
01:10:30Okay.
01:10:30That's it.
01:10:31I'll reach out to see what I can do, and I'll let you know.
01:10:34I didn't go from there.
01:10:35It's fine.
01:10:37No problem.
01:10:41She is so cooperative.
01:10:42An amazingly wonderful, cooperative mother.
01:10:45And all three of her kids are involved.
01:10:47I feel horrible for her.
01:10:49She identified one in the middle, saying, that looks like Jameson, and then she called
01:10:54Christian on the phone, and he said he was there, and Jameson was there for the robbery.
01:10:59And on speaker?
01:11:00Yeah.
01:11:03They're in the wind.
01:11:04And she's going to try to call them and try to get them to come in.
01:11:08That made the case right there, helping us to bring justice to this family quicker than
01:11:14it would have been done if she hadn't come in and gave us that information.
01:11:17She was upset, but she said that she wanted to appear in court just so she can see the victims
01:11:23and tell them how sorry she is that her sons did this.
01:11:28Our two outstanding defendants, I will send the warrants over to our marshal's task force,
01:11:34and they will start tracking them, and they will start tracking them so we can locate them and safely effect
01:11:38an arrest on them.
01:11:49Eight days later.
01:11:50So it's going to be this brick house right here.
01:11:55The marshals track Christian and Jameson to a relative's house in Glen Terrace.
01:12:01We're surrounding the house, and we're going to try to get them out peacefully.
01:12:04But swat on standby just in case.
01:12:34Negotiations are in progress right now, and we're standing by.
01:12:38We know they're armed, we know they're dangerous, so we just want to take all precautions
01:12:42to make sure the citizens nearby don't get hurt, nor any officers, nor them.
01:12:49Ready.
01:12:51As the team approaches the house,
01:12:56the brothers flee off the back.
01:13:2320-year-old Christian Bryant is taken into custody.
01:13:32But the suspected shooter, Jameson Bryant, is nowhere to be found.
01:13:37The SWAT did not locate him in the house. He slipped out.
01:13:40It's still a win. It's still a win in the book.
01:13:43Three down, one to go.
01:13:52Christian Bryant, I know you know what you're out here in reference to.
01:13:58I want to get your side of the story of what happened.
01:14:00All they can say is I don't want to be no snitch. I ain't seen those games.
01:14:03Listen, I've known this job for a long time. I get it.
01:14:05Accidents happen, bad s*** happens all the f***ing time.
01:14:08It's hard to f***ing talk about because it's f***ing.
01:14:11But you can't get over the facts of the case.
01:14:15We have video of the incident.
01:14:17We have video of leaving the apartment.
01:14:18The facts are what they are.
01:14:20This is your chance to tell me what happened.
01:14:36So what happened? How did it go down?
01:14:40I guess they saw a couple of guys and then when everything just happened too fast for me.
01:14:45So I was in the back with no clue, just going along with the s***.
01:14:48And once everything happened, I guess I run with them.
01:14:51Okay. How many people have firearms with you?
01:14:54The only one that I know of.
01:14:57Okay. And is that Jameson?
01:15:04Okay. So...
01:15:07So you did not have a firearm?
01:15:09No, I'm not. I promise you, no.
01:15:10Did Kobe have a firearm?
01:15:12Not that I'm aware of, no.
01:15:13Did Tristan have a firearm?
01:15:14Yeah, I'm sure, no.
01:15:15So I'll say this. All evidence is pointing to Jameson as the one that had the gun.
01:15:18I'm not saying that you're saying that, but all evidence is showing me that.
01:15:23Right.
01:15:24And when are the shots fired?
01:15:26I guess when we were leaving and he heard, oh, someone was chasing us.
01:15:31I never looked back.
01:15:31I didn't know that it was the gunfire on the side of my head.
01:15:35So you're fleeing and you hear gunshots as y'all are running away?
01:15:38Yeah.
01:15:42You know bullets don't have names, right?
01:15:44What is that?
01:15:44I understand you did not shoot, but yeah, bullets don't have names.
01:15:50Let me ask you something.
01:15:51Why you may come in here prior to?
01:15:54Once they had murder, I was like, eh, I don't think I must trust Ms. Silicon Valley.
01:16:01All right.
01:16:02So we may have to go ahead and just get you transported over to County.
01:16:05Okay?
01:16:11He confirmed that his brother Jameson is the one that had the gun and basically told us
01:16:16a story of what happened and it matches up exactly with the scene and what the victim
01:16:21said happened.
01:16:24So it really helps.
01:16:26It really turns the case from a circumstantial case to a really strong case.
01:16:31All right.
01:16:33Christian, you can stand it up.
01:16:35You are being charged with murder.
01:16:40No, you're not doing it.
01:16:41Christian.
01:16:44How old are you, bro?
01:16:4620, right?
01:16:47Look at me.
01:16:50No, you're not.
01:17:05He's definitely has some remorse.
01:17:07He's said several times, like, he's going to kill himself when he gets to jail because
01:17:12his life is over.
01:17:14So, like, with that, we'll let the jail know and he'll be on suicide watch.
01:17:17You can see that he does understand the foolishness, for lack of a better term, of what they did.
01:17:27The next step would be, obviously, get Jameson in custody and, ideally, would get a confession
01:17:33from him as well.
01:17:44Six weeks later...
01:17:45The marshal's got him.
01:17:46They zeroed in on the location in Greenville and then got him.
01:17:51Jameson Bryant, he is the fourth suspect I'd believe to be the shooter.
01:17:55They caught him in Greenville, South Carolina.
01:17:57It's about a three-hour drive away from here.
01:18:01That's a good song.
01:18:05Have a seat.
01:18:06You need some water?
01:18:08Yeah.
01:18:08Sweet tea?
01:18:10Oh, sweet tea.
01:18:11We have a bunch of fries, though.
01:18:12You know French fries?
01:18:14French fries?
01:18:15All right.
01:18:15I'm going to keep you shooting.
01:18:17I appreciate it.
01:18:18Good night.
01:18:18Watch it.
01:18:19I can't get the email on people, but just don't.
01:18:21All right.
01:18:26Come on, man.
01:18:27This guy don't keep us worth it for food.
01:18:29You say anything or anything?
01:18:31I mean, I didn't ask him a whole lot because I didn't want to get going.
01:18:34He knows that the marshals told him what his charges were, so he knows his murder.
01:18:37And he'd come out of the cell in Greenville singing and rapping.
01:18:42I told him we were coming back, and he'd talk to me.
01:18:44I was like, okay.
01:18:45All right.
01:18:46Let me go in there.
01:18:50It's pretty cold-hearted.
01:18:51Put the gun to his head and hold the trigger and then go off.
01:18:54It jammed.
01:18:55Yeah.
01:18:56Frickin' racist.
01:18:57Yeah.
01:18:59I'm going to talk to you about an incident that happened.
01:19:01Yeah.
01:19:02On the 25th of April.
01:19:03Basically, we know what happened.
01:19:05I'm just trying to get your side of the story.
01:19:06And mainly the question is, were you just there, or did you actually fire any shots?
01:19:11That's all what I really want to know.
01:19:14You haven't been there at all.
01:19:17See, that's the problem.
01:19:18I'm telling you, you're there.
01:19:23What I want to know is, were you just there?
01:19:27With these guys, and a shot was fired, was it intentional or an accident?
01:19:34Tell me, that seemed like an accident.
01:19:36You're like, hmm.
01:19:37So.
01:19:41What happens when you're in the trailer park?
01:19:44What happens from your point of view?
01:19:49We walk in the room.
01:19:51When you say.
01:19:52We ain't out splitting off, so I ain't by myself.
01:19:55When I walk off, I ain't not meeting back up with them boys.
01:19:59When then them boys just started running.
01:20:01Who started running?
01:20:03Everybody.
01:20:03The three you're with?
01:20:04Yeah.
01:20:05What are you hearing?
01:20:06Tell me what you, what's going on.
01:20:08I hear somebody start screaming.
01:20:11When someone in your group starts screaming?
01:20:13Uh-uh.
01:20:14Somebody else.
01:20:14I don't even know who.
01:20:15I haven't really fully aware what the **** is going on.
01:20:20Everybody just been in one line when we were running.
01:20:23And then when we hear, well, all I heard was gunshots.
01:20:26I don't even know where you come from.
01:20:28I know none of us discharged the firearm.
01:20:34None of y'all discharging the firearm, right?
01:20:36Uh-uh.
01:20:37But these are you, you, right?
01:20:41These are you going in the park, and these are your group running out, right?
01:20:45Correct?
01:20:46I got you.
01:20:48Look, the next image is your group firing gunshots.
01:20:54I ain't showing you.
01:20:55And the reason being, you've been lying this entire time right now.
01:20:58I'm not going to play this game.
01:20:59This ****, like I heard a scream, someone else is shooting.
01:21:02The camera don't lie.
01:21:03The shots are being fired from your group.
01:21:06Now, I don't know if that you're being chased, if it's justified.
01:21:08I don't know anything like that.
01:21:10You can only tell that story.
01:21:14Straight up.
01:21:16Um, I know.
01:21:21You're giving me an opportunity to be honest.
01:21:24I know that you were there.
01:21:26I know you were there with this group of guys.
01:21:28I know shots were fired from your group.
01:21:30This is your freaking life.
01:21:32So this is your chance, and I want you to be honest.
01:21:36Can you do that?
01:21:41I got you.
01:21:50What is all this?
01:21:54Sock-tastrophe.
01:21:55Finding out the party has a shoes-off policy.
01:21:58Smirnoff Extraordinary.
01:22:00Getting the world's number one vodka at a price worth sharing.
01:22:03We do Smirnoff Extraordinary.
01:22:09Smirnoff Extraordinary.
01:22:13We don't.
01:22:14We go on the street to the Star Road.
01:22:16Okay.
01:22:17To the f***.
01:22:19What you calling me?
01:22:20Trailer Park.
01:22:21Yeah.
01:22:24Well, I'm walking.
01:22:25Dumb boys just push up on some dudes.
01:22:27What dudes?
01:22:28How many dudes?
01:22:29Three dudes.
01:22:30Three dudes.
01:22:30So you push up on three dudes.
01:22:32Then what happens with those three guys?
01:22:34Dumb boys just start talking this s***.
01:22:37I wouldn't be part of taking this s***.
01:22:38I like no.
01:22:39Then that's when somebody lit off like two shots.
01:22:43Not somebody.
01:22:44Someone from your group.
01:22:45Yeah, one young boy lit up.
01:22:46Which one from your group lit off the two shots?
01:22:48I don't know.
01:22:49You feel me?
01:22:49Because I ain't paying attention.
01:22:52Well, your group is the one that's shooting the shots, correct?
01:22:54Not them.
01:22:55I don't know.
01:22:56So, s***, straight up.
01:22:59Look.
01:22:59I'm being honest, bro.
01:23:00All right.
01:23:02I'm going to be honest with you.
01:23:04The video, you let off the shots.
01:23:07A hundred percent, I know that.
01:23:09It's you.
01:23:09That's not a debate.
01:23:11I just want to know, did you intend to hit anybody?
01:23:15No.
01:23:16So, was this an accident?
01:23:19So, what happened?
01:23:20Why did you fire the shots then?
01:23:26It went off?
01:23:28So, it went off one time, two times?
01:23:31How many times?
01:23:31Huh?
01:23:32Two times.
01:23:32Two times.
01:23:34So, it was an accident when you stumbled and you fired twice.
01:23:39Why did you fire the other two shots?
01:23:42Yeah, there's two more.
01:24:02You know one of your bullets?
01:24:03Do you know where it went?
01:24:05No.
01:24:05It went through a trailer, and there was a Mexican guy sleeping in a bed.
01:24:11It went through his head.
01:24:12Damn.
01:24:15So, your bullet killed somebody.
01:24:36You gave him to a junkie?
01:24:43All right, let me step out for a moment.
01:24:44We'll be right back, all right?
01:24:49There you go.
01:24:50Yeah, it went well.
01:24:52I think realizing that it wasn't a debate, that I had a lot of evidence, he knew he had something
01:24:57on him, so he might as well just tell his story.
01:24:59He's the shooter.
01:25:00All four of them were going to rob these guys, and during the course of the robbery, he fired
01:25:05shots, which ended up killing an innocent person.
01:25:08Those actions led to him being charged with murder and the other three members of the group
01:25:14being charged with murder, instead of just armed robbery.
01:25:28Losers!
01:25:32Losers!
01:25:40Losers!
01:26:08This was an act that should have never happened.
01:26:10And now one mother has three of her sons in jail for murder, and the other mother has her son
01:26:17gone forever.
01:26:19But I'm thankful that the mother of the suspect stepped forward and did the right thing.
01:26:23That's unique, and I'm thankful.
01:26:26And I know the family must be thankful towards her for stepping up and doing that, even at the cost
01:26:31of her kids.
01:26:43Do you remember this photo?
01:26:46Yes.
01:26:49How do you remember?
01:26:51There's a night that he's in the middle and he's carrying the drogas.
01:26:58This photo was when he arrived here, to the South Carolina.
01:27:22He loved being an uncle.
01:27:24My kids were never without a candy or a lollipop or something, because Uncle Bocho bought it.
01:27:32He was a great guy.
01:27:34Anything we needed, he was always willing to help.
01:27:38Yes, well, as I said, I said, I was very happy to have a good friend.
01:27:44A person who knew me and now he's like, I don't have a word.
01:27:53Do you have a good friend?
01:27:55Do you have a good friend?
01:27:56Do you have a good friend?
01:27:58Do you have a good friend?
01:27:59Do you have a good friend?
01:28:08of a human being, a man who was sleeping at his house,
01:28:14and that's what I do most.
01:28:16The truth is, I don't know what to say,
01:28:20but I feel completely hurt.
01:28:31He was my friend.
01:28:33He was my friend.
01:28:35And, well, he left.
01:28:39And, well, I understand that we have to go ahead.
01:28:46And, well, we've lost him a lot.
01:28:51We always talk about him.
01:28:54Always the good stuff.
01:28:57Keep his memory alive.
01:29:00And, well, I don't know how to do this.
01:29:04Let's do this.
01:29:05And now we're going to get back to him.
01:29:061, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2, 1.
01:29:06I don't know how to do this.
01:29:06You
