00:01Fall goes down on three pitches as that is strikeout number 15 for the Dodgers.
00:06Dreyer strikes out two in the inning, and the Astros lose tonight 8-3.
00:11Mmm, 15 strikeouts. Nothing gets you going quite like 15 strikeouts for your team.
00:17Not a fun night at the yard last night. 8-3, the final score.
00:21Kyle Tucker and his new friends come to town and flip over all the furniture.
00:25We invite them into our house. Kyle Tucker. Oh, Kyle, welcome back.
00:29You know where everything is. Just be polite. Don't flip over all the furniture.
00:34Don't make us feel bad. And he did all those things. He made us feel bad.
00:37We got something for you, Kyle. How about an opener?
00:40That's right.
00:40Mr. Lefty.
00:42Okert.
00:44Can't spell opener without okert.
00:47The opener loads the bases.
00:50And it was...
00:54Okay, Mike Burroughs.
00:57Okay, go ahead, Sean.
00:58No, no, no. Well, Mike Burroughs, I'm just curious where you're going with this.
01:01No, no, no. I know, no, no.
01:03I know, I know, I know. Just go ahead.
01:05I'm, uh, go ahead.
01:07No, Ryan Weiss. Ryan Weiss is who I was going to talk about.
01:10I know, I know, I know. I had a thought about Mike Burroughs because of, um, but just go ahead.
01:15Okay.
01:17Off and running on a Tuesday.
01:19I'm sorry. I did. We were talking about, uh, something, like, right before the show,
01:23and it totally screwed me up.
01:24Yeah, yeah.
01:25I said Matt Sanchez three times yesterday, uh, during an interview when I was talking about
01:29Mark Sanchez.
01:31It's, uh, it's been a rough 12 hours.
01:33Okay.
01:34Is that the interview you did with the Ohio State guy?
01:37No, that one went pretty well because I was doing the interviewing.
01:40Okay.
01:40And then, uh, I was on with Greg Rosenthal.
01:42Oh, that's right. How did that go?
01:44That went well.
01:45You know what? It was kind of a, it was kind of a shock to my system because he just,
01:48he
01:48said, Hey, let's just go through the over-unders for all 32 teams.
01:52And I'm like, I haven't paid attention enough for all of this.
01:56Hold up, hold up.
01:57All 32 teams?
01:58Well, we looked at each division.
02:00Okay.
02:00And kind of had a conversation about each one.
02:02But it was good because he texted me about an hour before.
02:04And I'm like, I got to, I got to bone up because I'm not, I, I just, you know, I've
02:08been in my own little draft.
02:09That training camp's going to be here before you know it, man.
02:12Yeah.
02:13The season will be here.
02:14Okay.
02:14So the, so, so, but as far as yesterday, they started off with an opener and, um, because
02:19the Dodgers have a bunch of lefties and then, and then Ryan Weiss comes in and how many,
02:24how many runs did he allow?
02:25A lot.
02:26A lot.
02:27He, uh, he, he was 47.
02:29It was, it was close.
02:30It was, I'll, I'll look it up.
02:32But Ryan Weiss, we got some great audio coming up here in a minute or so with, uh, Chandler
02:36asking Joe Spada about Ryan Weiss.
02:39Chandler was thinking the same thing I was, which is every time Ryan Weiss pitches, he's
02:43bad.
02:43He's not a good pitcher.
02:44His ERA is, is, it was almost seven going into last night's game.
02:49And I know that doesn't sound too bad because the Astros entire pitching staff has an ERA
02:54of six.
02:54So like, that's only like a run more than everybody else combined.
02:58Uh, I'm stalling here, Seth, while I look up Ryan Weiss from last night.
03:02Here we go.
03:03Uh, he gave up six run, six earned runs, seven runs total in four and a third innings.
03:09And this is where we're at with the staff.
03:11It's like last night's game.
03:13It was a second straight bullpen game.
03:15So Callis and Blum, as Weiss is out there just getting smacked around, they're like,
03:21well, he's, he's not getting pulled out.
03:23Like he is going to stay in.
03:25This will be Ryan Weiss's longest stint of the season because they just need guys to
03:30eat up pitches right now and eat up innings and throw pitches.
03:34And so it was almost like they were, it was almost like they were throwing a PSA on his
03:39performance last night.
03:40Like, Hey guys, just so you know, I know that Ryan Weiss stinks and he's going to get
03:45knocked around a ton here.
03:47He is going to be staying in for damn near a hundred pitches.
03:51Cause they've got nobody that can pitch.
03:52They're laying this out.
03:54I mean, this pitching staff, the injuries have taken its toll, no doubt, but they're bad
03:58too.
03:58That's the thing.
03:59And Ryan Weiss, I can't, I can't think of one good outing he's had this year.
04:02His ERA is up to 7.62 now.
04:05And he comes in and he is just a, he's a white flag with two legs, man.
04:10Like he is a surrender flag and he comes in and he's, they're just knocking him all over
04:15the place.
04:15Somebody put up, there were two graphics that stuck out to me last night.
04:19One was the, the chart that they put up Seth on the broadcast of how many pitches each reliever's
04:25thrown over the last seven days.
04:27Yeah.
04:27And the whole thing is just littered with guys who pitched in the last two or three days.
04:30Like they've got no options.
04:32Like I saw Chandler tweeting last night, well, the Astros just used one of their leverage
04:36relievers in a game.
04:38They're down eight to two right now.
04:39And it's like, yeah, they got nobody else.
04:42Like, and Kiwi Tang was supposed to start on Sunday, but he couldn't do that.
04:46So everything.
04:48Yeah.
04:48You're supposed to get a start out of your reliever on Sunday.
04:51That got thrown in the, in the, in the waste.
04:54Yeah.
04:55Yiner's on, I, on the IL.
04:57If anybody missed that, I know he missed, did they put him on?
05:00According to a league source, Chandler said that they will be putting him on.
05:04Yeah.
05:04Abdominal injury is not good, man.
05:06That was at like 11 PM last night.
05:08Left abdominal injury.
05:09Oh, okay.
05:09Oblique.
05:10It's an oblique.
05:11Oblique.
05:11Okay.
05:11Gotcha.
05:12Gotcha.
05:13They'd said abdominal.
05:14It was an hour before the game that he tweaked it.
05:17And so he was out.
05:18And then according to Chandler, he'll be on the IL.
05:21Okay.
05:21Well, we haven't had one in like seven days.
05:23I mean, now we got to go.
05:25What are they down to?
05:2512?
05:26They were down to 13.
05:27They're back to, I guess, back to 14.
05:29Now, we go through the list.
05:31A lot of guys playing catch.
05:32You know what freaked me out in the first 20 seconds of the show is I was, you started
05:36giving me that look when I said that they used an opener last night and you gave me a
05:40confused look.
05:41No, no, no.
05:41It was when you mentioned Mike Burroughs' name.
05:43I got confused.
05:43Yeah, I know.
05:44I guess.
05:44Oh, did I say Burroughs before I even mentioned Oakert?
05:46Okay.
05:47You said Mike Burroughs.
05:48You go, Mike Burroughs.
05:49Screw all of them anyway.
05:50Yeah.
05:50They're egg profiles at this point.
05:52The six grandiose, you know, hey, these guys we're bringing in, we'll have so much depth.
06:01And yes, injuries have been an issue, but of the guys who have actually pitched, those
06:06guys have an ERA over six right now.
06:08You know, like injuries be damned.
06:11The guys you brought in in the offseason, they were supposed to give you all of these options
06:16in case there were injuries.
06:18It doesn't matter whether they're injured or not.
06:19They just, they're, they're the worst pitchers in the league.
06:22Yeah.
06:23Yeah.
06:23They, and they, the, the, I would say Espada is probably in more danger than Dana Brown,
06:29but Dana Brown's been worse at his job than Joe Espada.
06:32Like, you know, it's just the manager's the guy who's going to catch the brunt of it.
06:35If the team is doing like the Astros are right now, firing the GM in May is not somebody
06:40that that's not something that wakes up the players firing a manager that I think generally
06:44people like that can have an effect.
06:47I just don't think they're a very good baseball team.
06:48That's the problem.
06:49They're, they're just, they're, yeah, it doesn't, you know, Alex Cora gets fired and
06:54immediately the odds are out for which team he's going to next.
06:57And he's sought after.
06:59Yeah.
06:59He's sought after.
07:00Right.
07:00Like it's, that's a classic.
07:02Okay.
07:02Well, we got to do something and we're not blaming Alex Cora, but let's try to shuffle
07:06things up.
07:07Great point.
07:08He's, he's immediately sought after the Astros are one of the favorites to land Alex Cora
07:11next year.
07:12I don't think that people feel that same way about Espada.
07:14No.
07:15And now, now, you know, Cora's had the benefit of being able to manage a really good team
07:19to a world series championship.
07:21Yeah.
07:21Uh, Espada has, he's, his, the biggest plus on his resume is that he's fought back from
07:27some disastrous openings.
07:30Um, his teams don't give up to make the playoff.
07:32His teams have not given up on seasons when they could have given up on seasons with him.
07:36He's kept it together.
07:37Which always begs the question though.
07:39Okay.
07:39But he was the manager when they got off to the slow start.
07:42Yeah.
07:43A hundred.
07:43That's the old, Hey, quarterback really came, came back after he threw four interceptions.
07:48Okay.
07:48Good for him.
07:49Good for him.
07:50The old Jake Plummer.
07:51Oh, captain comeback.
07:52Like he's the reason they were trailing by 21 to begin with.
07:55Um, that's Espada.
07:56So this was Joe Espada last night.
07:58We talked a lot about the pitching here in the open.
08:00They lose eight to three last night.
08:01Um, Ryan Weiss came in, pitched four and a third cause he had to, he threw 95 pitches.
08:05He, he, he was terrible.
08:08And here was Joe Espada, his opening statement for last night's game.
08:13Uh, you know, it's just behind the count often, um, stuff is really good, right?
08:20Just needs to kind of get ahead and, and, and force the action for them to chase.
08:26But he's got it.
08:27He's got to get ahead.
08:28Um, cause once you're behind, you know, you throw your stuff in the heart of the plate against
08:33a lineup like this, he's just gonna, they'll, they could do some damage, you know?
08:39Um, just got to continue to, you know, help them through this process of how to navigate
08:45these lineups at the major league level.
08:46Okay.
08:47So they, he's got no answers on Weiss.
08:48He's got no answers on Weiss.
08:50This is a follow-up Chandler Rome.
08:51Couple questions later, Chandler Rome asks a very fair question about a guy with a 7-6-2
08:58ERA who has yet to, that I can recall, have a good outing.
09:02Like, every time Ryan Weiss comes out, man, there are crooked numbers going up on the
09:06scoreboard.
09:07This was Chandler Rome saying, hey, have you thought about maybe a change of scenery for
09:11Ryan Weiss?
09:13Joe, are you guys reaching a point with Weiss where they're going to change the scenery of
09:17yours?
09:18Where is he going to go?
09:19Scenery where?
09:20He has one of the options on him.
09:21Oh, come on.
09:23No, don't, I know, but don't, don't, don't try to play GM.
09:26In other words, we, we gotta, we gotta help him through it.
09:29Maybe he's here, maybe he's in Mount Leagues, but, you know, let's not just start pointing
09:34one bad outing because we could go down the list of guys that we working through this and
09:39we have confidence and faith that he could do this, but let's not get down that path
09:43of change of scenery or anything like that.
09:46That's inferior.
09:47That's not your call.
09:48Yeah, no, Chandler's not saying it's his call.
09:50He's a reporter asking you a question about one of the worst pitchers in baseball who has
09:55options to go to the minor leagues.
09:57You've got guys that are terrible right now who you'd probably, I'm guessing you'd have
10:01to DFA and put them through waivers and you don't want to do that.
10:04That is a perfectly fair question and an infuriatingly weak answer by Joe Espada right there.
10:09What if, uh, what if in a passive aggressive fashion, he was basically saying, hey, that's
10:15Dana's call.
10:16Uh, and he's the one that got us into this mess to where I have to sit up here and
10:20answer
10:20questions about, about how the hell do you, how the hell do I actually decide whether or
10:26not to bring in Kiwi Tang in a, in a, in a ridiculous situation?
10:30Because I have to bring in Kiwi Tang in a ridiculous situation.
10:34Got no choice.
10:34Well, the thing about that too is, I mean, he got chippy with Chandler about it and there's
10:38such an easy answer to it in that you just go, well, first of all, you just say, no, we're
10:43just not there yet and you can disagree with that.
10:46If you're Chandler or Sean Pendergast or Seth Payne or anybody, you can disagree with, we're
10:50not there with Weiss yet, but that can be the simple answer to it.
10:54And far be it for me for, you know, like to, you know, like I, do I, do I need
10:57to stick
10:58up for Chandler Roman?
10:59I don't think Chandler probably even cares at a spot.
11:00I got chippy with him, but I think it's a sign just, okay, is this the guy like, is
11:04it like, is, is, is, is this the guy who's, you know, leading your team here?
11:09Like, like a guy reporter asked a question about a guy with an ERA of eight.
11:13Uh, about, have you thought about a change of scenery?
11:15He didn't even, he didn't even say the word minor leagues.
11:17He just said change of scenery and a spot is like, don't play GM.
11:21Like he's not playing GM.
11:22He's asking you a question.
11:23Dude, you know what?
11:24It's one thing when they want to be chippy with Chandler Rome because they don't like
11:27that.
11:27He asks hard questions back when they were winning a boatload of games.
11:31All right.
11:31I get it.
11:32Okay.
11:32You know, you're the cock of the walk.
11:34Okay.
11:34That's your right.
11:35But one of the worst teams in baseball, right?
11:37Yes.
11:38Are you going to, Oh, there's that Chandler Rome asking about why we're losing baseball.
11:42Again, these are, these are, and he also said, you know what?
11:47He also said, he said, well, just one bad outing, dude, I'm looking at, I'm looking at
11:52the game log.
11:53These are, this is Ryan Weiss's last six games counting backwards from last night, four and
12:00a third, six earned runs, three and two thirds, three earned runs, three and a third, two earned
12:05runs, three and two thirds, two earned runs, two and a third, two earned runs, two and two
12:11thirds, six earned runs like that.
12:14I don't know what that ERA is.
12:15I suppose I could just do the little thing where you, well, I don't know over that stretch,
12:19but his ERA right now is 7.62, 7.62, 9.45 over that, over his last six games.
12:25Yeah.
12:26He's given up over a run and inning in the last six games.
12:28What are we doing here?
12:29Or like, don't play GM, get out of here, man.
12:31I'm sure with the expected ERA, it's probably only a 7.9 or something.
12:358.09 FIPS, Seth.
12:37That's what it is.
12:378.09, so you're right, he's been a victim of bad luck.
12:40Victim of bad luck.
12:42He's not, he's not the worst pitcher in history.
12:45He's just amongst the worst.
12:47Oh my God.
12:48Oh, so.
12:49They brought him in to be a starter, remember?
12:51Yes.
12:53I remember.
12:55But we've got so many pitchers that we have the luxury of making Ryan Weiss a reliever.
13:02The guy they brought in for the minimum from the Korean League isn't getting the job done, yeah.
13:06You know what, I've got to go back and find the Chandler Rome article that he wrote last night
13:09because I thought he said, he might have cited a source saying that Weiss is going to be demoted,
13:14which would be extra hilarious if it's about to act like that.
13:18That should be him.
13:19How do you ask a question like that, you doofus?
13:21Yeah.
13:22Yep.
13:23Well, I mean, it's, here's the other part of the answer that Espada should have given,
13:27which is, we don't have a lot of choices right now.
13:29You know, we've, we've got a bunch of guys on the IL and we don't, you know, look, hey,
13:35we're depleted right now.
13:36What do you got?
13:37What'd you find out?
13:38In Chandler's article yesterday, he must've written this after Espada dressed him down.
13:44He said the team will demote Weiss to the minor leagues before Tuesday's game, according
13:49to a league source.
13:50Oh, wow.
13:51What time, what's the timestamp on the article at the top?
13:54All right, let's see.
13:55It was at 1 a.m.
13:59Central.
13:59So it was after the game.
14:00Yeah.
14:01It was after that press conference.
14:03After Espada acted like Chandler was the worst person on earth for asking whether they might
14:08demote Weiss.
14:09So with that bit.
14:09According to a source right now, they're planning on demoting Weiss.
14:12With that bit of information you just unearthed from an article that everybody can read that
14:16has an athletic subscription.
14:17Yeah.
14:18That little nugget.
14:18Let's replay.
14:19Hey, Ben, can we play one more time?
14:21Chandler asking Espada about change of scenery for Ryan Weiss.
14:25Joe, are you guys reaching a part of the place where they change the scenery or just...
14:30Where is he going to go?
14:32Scenery where?
14:32He has one of the options on him.
14:34Oh, come on.
14:36I know, but don't try to play GM.
14:39We got to help him through it.
14:41Maybe he's here.
14:42Maybe he's in Mount Leagues.
14:43But, you know, let's not just start pointing one bad outing because we could go down the
14:49list of guys that we're working through this and we have confidence and faith that he
14:53could do this.
14:53But let's not get down that path of change of scenery or anything like that.
14:59That's not your call.
15:01Oh, yeah.
15:05I'd feel bad for Espada.
15:06Espada probably walked out of the clubhouse, saw Dana, and Dana was like, hey, we're sending
15:10Ryan Weiss.
15:11Yeah.
15:11Well, Chandler, and, boy, Chandler might have known something, too.
15:17You know, you hang around in the press box and talk to people.
15:19Yeah, that's a specific question.
15:20You know, Ulola's available, or however the hell you pronounce his name.
15:23Yeah.
15:23I think it's pronounced Mike Burroughs.
15:27And, uh...
15:29No, but Chandler, Chandler, you know, you've been in the press box at baseball games.
15:34There's all kinds of, you know, Dana's walking around.
15:36There's people that work for Dana walking around.
15:38Chandler's probably got contacts in the building and had an inkling.
15:41That something could be happening with Weiss.
15:43Yeah.
15:44You know, if he could have had an inkling.
15:46I'm not saying he did.
15:47He's going to give a spot an opportunity.
15:48Yeah, he wasn't asking.
15:49It's not like you said, hey, why aren't you sending him down?
15:53He just said, is it possible that a change of scenery might be a good idea?
15:55Change of scenery.
15:56He didn't even use the words minor leagues.
15:58He didn't even use the words get sent down.
16:00He said, change of scenery.
16:02He was as gentle with that question with possible knowledge that something was going to happen
16:08as he could have been.
16:10I say possible knowledge something was going to happen.
16:12If I had to guess, I would guess.
16:13I love, though, too.
16:14I love the spot of, you know, kind of scoffing at, like, let's not trade a plea GM.
16:19And then an actual GM makes that move.
16:22Oh, yeah.
16:22Right, right.
16:23Oh, you think you're smart enough to be a GM, huh?
16:26No.
16:26Well, look at what our GM's about to do.
16:28Oh, crap.
16:29He did the exact thing Chandler asked about.
16:33Dude, in a spot as world, Dana Brown heard that question from Chandler and was like, oh,
16:38that's not a bad idea.
16:42You know, Chandler's right.
16:43He does have options.
16:47Chandler, I know you and I have had our differences, but have you ever thought about entering the
16:51front office?
16:53He's got great ideas.
16:55Sending the pitcher down with a 7.62 ERA.
16:59He's very creative.
