00:01President Donald Trump rallying thousands of supporters
00:04at The Villages, the world's largest retirement community
00:08located in Central Florida.
00:10He also spent a lot of time rambling on about malfunctioning microphones
00:15and the village people.
00:17This speech has not been narrowly focused.
00:21Are you worried about a senior with declining mental faculties?
00:25Don't know where he'll be happiest?
00:27Consider...
00:28The Villages
00:30Your senior should be in a secure and safe place.
00:34I should be indoors at a secure facility
00:36where I can quietly, beautifully, and safely play.
00:40At The Villages, your senior can enjoy golf, do aerobics,
00:44and give important speeches.
00:47You've got fish to catch.
00:49If you catch some extra fish, enjoy it.
00:52You've got plenty of fish.
00:55There are a lot of fish in the ocean.
00:57I don't know where they came up with that one, but there's a lot of fish.
01:01Plus, our experienced staff is always there to help,
01:04whether it's trouble on the stairs or freshening him up after an accidental crap.
01:09It's the Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
01:14Tonight, give it to me straight.
01:18Plus, Stephen welcomes Christopher Nolan and Dave Grohl.
01:27And musical guest, Bill Fikers.
01:32Featuring Lewis Kata and the great big Joe in the Sheen.
01:36And now, live on tape from the Ed Sullivan Theatre in New York City,
01:42it's Stephen Colbert!
02:04Welcome, welcome, welcome, friends, to The Late Show.
02:06I'm your host, Stephen Colbert.
02:08And to everyone...
02:09I don't know how much...
02:11To everyone...
02:13To everyone watching here and at home,
02:15May the 4th be with you, because...
02:18Of course, we know May the 4th is International Star Wars Day.
02:22In fact, the whole month is important to Star Wars fans,
02:26or as they call themselves, Beliebers,
02:27because the first six films all debuted in May,
02:33and this year, we're getting the first new Star Wars film
02:36in theaters since 2019,
02:38Star Wars The Mandalorian and Grogu.
02:41Obviously...
02:44Obviously, I'm thrilled that Baby Yoda is getting a spinoff,
02:47but I'm worried he's gonna end up like all child stars.
02:53Oh, oh.
02:56DUI Rehab, then hosting his own Netflix dating show,
03:00Grogu's Bang Boy Beach.
03:03Grogu's, Grogu's, Grogu's, Grogu's...
03:07This new Star Wars film has plenty of big names,
03:09because Jeremy Allen White will star,
03:11and this is true...
03:13He is starring as Jabba the Hutt's son.
03:18Oh.
03:20Yes, chef.
03:24Jabba, Jabba.
03:25I wouldn't...
03:27It wouldn't be Star Wars without toys and tie-ins.
03:29For this movie, Burger King is rolling the items out like
03:33BBQ Bounty Whopper and Imperial Cheddar Ranch Tots,
03:38and Nabisco is launching Grogu Nilla Nummies,
03:42an amazing treat for any kid who's always wanted to eat Grogu's...
03:47eggs?
03:50Skin?
03:51Poop?
03:51We're not sure.
03:53I don't think this one was cleared over at Skywalker Ranch,
03:56but today, and this is absolutely true,
04:00Pornhub updated their logo to include the symbol of the Rebel Alliance,
04:06which makes sense.
04:06Everybody loves Star Wars-themed pornos, like...
04:10Obi-Wan can bone me...
04:14R2DD2...
04:15And, of course, Hand Solo.
04:20In this one, Hand definitely shoots first.
04:25But stars aren't the only place.
04:32There's a war.
04:35There's also one in Iran.
04:37Well...
04:37Good segue!
04:46Thank you, graphics department.
04:48Well...
04:49Over the weekend, Iran submitted a 14-point plan to end the war.
04:53It's pretty one-sided.
04:55They proposed that both sides lift their blockades of the Strait of Hormuz,
04:59Israel completely end the war in Lebanon,
05:01the U.S. release Iran's frozen assets,
05:04require the U.S. to pay compensation,
05:06and lift all sanctions against Tehran.
05:08In addition, Iran would get the new grand theft auto,
05:13free guacamole and participating in Chipotles,
05:16and a hall pass to sleep with Lady Liberty's sister, Tammy.
05:21Tammy's fun.
05:22Tammy's way more fun.
05:24Trump rejected the offer,
05:26and yesterday he posted this image saying,
05:28I have all the cards.
05:32Which, you may have seen this, is cool,
05:34except you might notice the cards Trump is holding
05:37are from the game Uno,
05:39where, quite famously, the object is to get rid of all your cards.
05:44I have so many cards.
05:45No, I have so many cards.
05:47Look at this.
05:47I have so many cards.
05:49This idiot over here...
05:51Just...
05:52Hold on.
05:53There we go.
05:54Here we go.
05:58This idiot over here just played a draw four,
06:00and I get to draw four more.
06:02I got so many cards.
06:04I got the three of hearts.
06:05I got the blockbuster membership.
06:08Charizard.
06:11The longer this goes on,
06:14uh, just the worst things get for average consumers.
06:17Last week, crude oil hit a wartime high,
06:20trading above $126.
06:22And I'd say Iran has America over a barrel,
06:25but we can't afford a barrel?
06:28Can we do this over a bucket?
06:31As a result, today, the average price of gas hit $4.46 a gallon.
06:38God knows what it's doing to the price of grass and ass.
06:44But, come on.
06:46Ask your parents.
06:47Ask your grandparents.
06:49But you got to give it to President Trump.
06:50He campaigned on $2 gas, and now he's delivering more than twice what he promised.
06:56One Wall Street trader...
07:02It's on my own.
07:03It's on my own.
07:04One Wall Street trader explained why oil prices suddenly spiked.
07:07They thought this crisis, uh, in the straight would be short-lived,
07:11due to the infamous taco or Trump always chickens out.
07:15But it turned into...
07:16It turned into a nacho, which stands for
07:19Not a Chance Hormuz Opens.
07:22Well, if I may, I'd like to suggest my own acronym,
07:26CARNITAS, which stands for
07:29Can anyone recommend nursing home?
07:31I think his a-brainsploded.
07:37This...
07:40It's very pretty.
07:41I don't know what that is, but that's very pretty.
07:44The high price of fuel took its toll this weekend,
07:47because yesterday, Spirit Airlines shut down.
07:52Oh, no, I have three more weeks of shows to do.
07:56Now I won't have Spirit Airlines jokes?
07:58Quick, somebody check on Arby's.
08:02The Spirit Airlines of shaved beef.
08:11Spirit announced their immediate closure in a statement saying,
08:15All flights have been canceled, and customer service is no longer available.
08:20Which, coincidentally, was also Spirit's motto.
08:24One more for the road, baby!
08:33So, Spirit is gone.
08:35But there are still plenty of safe and reliable airlines out there, like United.
08:41What's new with them?
08:43Well, yesterday, a United Airlines plane struck a bakery truck on the New Jersey Turnpike.
08:49I know that sounds bad, but trust me, it looks so much worse.
08:54I'm gonna show you the dash cam footage of the bakery truck.
08:58But first, I just wanna stress, everyone's okay.
09:00Which is surprising, because check this out.
09:03Dash cam footage shows the moment a truck is struck.
09:08As the United Airlines flight approached Newark Liberty International Airport Sunday afternoon.
09:13If you look closely, you can see what appears to be the wheel of the plane out the driver's window.
09:19Okay, that is, I know that is shocking, but don't forget, this accident was predicted 25 years ago by the
09:25opening of The Sopranos.
09:33Thankfully, thankfully, neither the driver or anyone on the plane was hurt,
09:37and investigators are still trying to figure out what happened, but I think I found a clue.
09:41It turns out, this flight was arriving from Italy's Marco Polo Airport.
09:48Well, there's your answer.
09:50Okay, okay, Tower.
09:52Okay, Tower.
09:53Tower, we are coming in for landing.
09:55I'm just gonna put on my blindfold.
10:00Marco.
10:03Marco, please respond polo.
10:05Mmm, mmm.
10:07Mmm, I smell dinner rolls.
10:11Well, Spirit Airlines isn't the only iconic company we lost this weekend.
10:15Because after nearly 30 years of service, Ask Jeeves has shut down.
10:21If you're unfamiliar with Ask Jeeves, which went on to become Ask.com,
10:26it was an Internet search engine originally depicted as a snooty British butler,
10:30who was later 3D-rendered and rebranded, apparently, as a pervert who liked to watch.
10:38In a statement, Jeeves' parent company said,
10:42To you, the millions of users who turn to us for answers in a rapidly changing world,
10:48thank you for your endless curiosity, your loyalty, and your trust.
10:52Well, thanks a lot, Jeeves.
10:54That's what I was gonna say on my last show.
10:57We got a great show for you tonight.
11:00My guests are Christopher Nolan and Dave Grohl,
11:03but when we come back, we'll check in on some of my favorite puppies.
11:08You can join us, don't you?
11:33We got a great show for you tonight.
11:39Come on!
11:41Uh, folks, it's time I finally came clean on a controversial issue.
11:47I love dogs, and I don't care who knows.
11:51Cancel me.
11:52In fact, I love dogs so much, I've done a long-running segment on the show called Rescue Dog Rescue,
11:58where we help find homes for real rescue dogs by having a celebrity guest join me
12:03to tell flattering lies about the dogs to make them even that much more attractive.
12:07And I'm proud to say that every dog we have featured has been adopted.
12:17But now, now with the show coming to an end, I've been wondering what exactly happened to all those dogs.
12:24Well, it turns out they're living good lives with nice people who took them in, which is boring.
12:30So after years of lying about dogs to find them a home,
12:34I think it's time to lie to you one last time about where those actual dogs are today.
12:40This is Rescue Dog Rescue, Where Arf They Now?
12:51Over the past decade, this segment has found loving homes for so many adorable mutts,
12:57from Luna to Denise to Nick Offerman.
13:01Don't forget to spay and or neuter your Nick.
13:05So let's catch up on what some of these lovable puppies have been up to.
13:08First up is Nugget. After appearing on the show, he earned his master's and black belt in karate.
13:16You gotta respect his work ethic, because if you don't, he'll do this to your face.
13:22Then there was Biscuit. She was on the show with Seth Rogen.
13:25Biscuit moved to Connecticut with her new family, where she took up gardening.
13:29She's been called the Martha Stewart of dogs, because she also went to prison for insider trading.
13:35Then there was the dog we referred to as Name Redacted.
13:39Mark Hamill explained why.
13:41I'd love to tell you his real name, but he's in witness protection
13:44after testifying against a murderous drug dealer.
13:48Well, after seeing that episode, the cartel found her.
13:51And in order to save her own life, she had to, let's say, respond with extreme prejudice.
13:57She now runs the largest cocaine operation on the eastern seaboard.
14:01Who's a bad girl?
14:03You are! Yes, you are!
14:06And, of course, Laura.
14:08She was on the show alongside Dua Lipa.
14:11Dua Lipa encouraged Laura to try acting, and now Laura is living out her dream,
14:16playing Simba in the touring company of The Lion King.
14:19Reviewers rave, I think one of the actors was a dog, and Hakuna Matoto, and when I went, Simba kept
14:28humping Pumbaa.
14:30Then there was Midge.
14:31Midge appeared with Ryan Reynolds.
14:33Today, Midge runs her own tattoo parlor, and her work is really something.
14:39You can be a little messy, but no one could be mad at Midge because she's too cute.
14:45Also, she makes her client sign a waiver.
14:48This is Bartleby.
14:50His appearance proved to be so captivating that he is now the subject of a new documentary
14:54by acclaimed filmmaker Werner Herzog.
14:57Behold, the animal known as Bartleby.
15:02By day, he protects his owners by screaming at squirrels.
15:08By night, he frees his mind by drinking from the toilet of madness.
15:16This is Baxter.
15:18In 2024, he was held by people's sexiest man alive, Chris Evans.
15:23And today, well, these days, Baxter spends most of his time just sitting around thinking about that moment.
15:29Because honestly, wouldn't you?
15:33Then there was Dakota, who was on the show with Daniel Radcliffe.
15:36Well, that night after the show, there was an incident with an electrical transformer backstage,
15:41and the two ended up switching bodies.
15:45Please help me.
15:46It's Daniel Radcliffe.
15:48I'm trapped in here, and I don't know where my body is.
15:50Anybody?
15:51Help!
15:55Oh, crap!
15:58Finally, there was Norbert.
16:00Norbert was the only dog to appear on the show three times.
16:04Unfortunately, during that time, Norbert stole about $40 million from the late show budget
16:09and won't tell anyone where he buried it.
16:11Well, that does it for Rescue Dog Rescue.
16:14I'm happy to say we were able to find homes for absolutely every dog that we presented for adoption.
16:19Bye-bye, my furry friends, and thanks for only occasionally peeing on me.
16:25I want to thank North Shore Animal League America.
16:28Go check them out.
16:30And thanks to all the stars who helped out with Rescue Dog Rescue.
16:34And, of course, thanks to the dogs.
16:36We couldn't have done it without you.
16:37It would have made absolutely no sense.
16:40We'll be right back with Christopher Nolan.
16:42Welcome back!
16:48Welcome back!
16:49Welcome back!
16:51Welcome back!
17:05Welcome back!
17:06Welcome back!
17:06Welcome back!
17:06Welcome back!
17:07My first guest tonight is the Oscar-winning producer, writer, and director of such films
17:13as The Dark Knight, Dunkirk, and Oppenheimer.
17:16Please welcome back to The Late Show, Christopher Nolan!
17:28Thank you!
17:41Nice to see you again!
17:43Nice to be back here.
17:44Last time we spoke was at Princeton at the Institute for Advanced Studies
17:48in Einstein's office.
17:50Yes.
17:50And here we are in the Ed Sullivan.
17:52Do you want to compare the vibes?
17:55I mean, the intellect is still here.
17:57You feel the waves of history coming off the walls.
18:00It's a slightly different way.
18:02But no, that was a fun time.
18:04It was a really cool thing to be able to be there in Einstein's office
18:06talking about everything.
18:08Yeah, unbelievable.
18:09We took the Colbert bump right the way to the Oscars.
18:11You're welcome.
18:12Thank you very much for that.
18:13You're welcome.
18:14Anytime.
18:15There you go.
18:17Cheers.
18:18Cheers.
18:18There you go.
18:20Okay, Oppenheimer, as you said, won seven Academy Awards,
18:22including Best Picture and Best Director.
18:25You chose to follow it up with just a small, not showy story.
18:30Yes.
18:32Just the bedrock of Western literature.
18:36The story of stories, The Odyssey.
18:39What was it about?
18:43I assume you're also a fan.
18:44I'm a fan of the Iliad.
18:45But what is it about Homer?
18:47Why did you want to tackle this particular story?
18:50I mean, you're always looking for something that hasn't been done before.
18:53And Greek mythology, even though so many of us are familiar with it, you know, from when we're kids and
18:59the way in which it's the underpinnings of all stories, as you say, in Western literature.
19:04But it hadn't really been done on a big scale.
19:06I mean, I grew up with movies by greats like Ray Harryhausen and Clash of the Titans, things like that.
19:12But it hadn't really been done at a kind of a budget, big studio, you know, throw everything at the
19:18screen and see what sticks kind of way.
19:20And that's the kind of gap you're looking for as a filmmaker.
19:23It's like, how can we get in there and really try and bring something new for audiences?
19:27It's just one of the great adventure stories.
19:29And I really wanted to see it done justice.
19:32So we just sort of dove in.
19:34And the story itself has, and the Iliad, have such depth behind them and implied depth.
19:42Basically, the Greek myths are all paying off in the Iliad and the Odyssey.
19:45A lot of scores are being settled between the gods with each other.
19:47And I know you don't want to give anything away about the film, but are there gods in it?
19:52Is there any of the supernatural?
19:54Because Troy, like the movie Troy, it had none of the gods in it.
19:58Do you have any of the gods in it?
20:00I don't really want to give anything away.
20:01I mean, I know it's weird to talk about spoilers on a 3,000-year-old piece of literature,
20:07but a lot of the way, as you...
20:12Your New Testament, has it got that Jesus guy in it?
20:14You got that Jesus guy in your New Testament?
20:16Okay, Matt Damon plays the title character, Odysseus.
20:20You've worked with him before in Interstellar, Oppenheimer.
20:23Those are both great roles, but supporting roles in that.
20:27Why'd you risk one on Damon?
20:29Why did you...
20:30Yes, he's talented.
20:31Yes, he's handsome.
20:32Yes, he's intelligent, but...
20:34We tried him out a couple of times.
20:35Okay, yeah.
20:36You know, just to see and everything.
20:39No, I mean, look, the great thing about working with people who are just incredibly good at what they do,
20:44like Matt is, just one of the greats.
20:47I got to do a couple of movies with him, and then I got really that thrill of being able
20:52to call him up and say, how about Odysseus?
20:56And, you know, it's a one-word pitch.
20:57It's right there.
20:58And I warned him.
20:59I said, it's going to be very hard.
21:01And he's like, yeah, I know, I know, I know.
21:03I said, no, it's going to be very hard.
21:06He says it's the hardest film he's ever made.
21:08I think for all of us, it was an incredibly challenging movie in all the right ways.
21:13I mean, I like to say it was a nightmare in all the right ways.
21:15Right.
21:16It's just, it's a lot to take on.
21:17It's the Odyssey.
21:19It's the greatest epic in literature.
21:22And so it should be difficult.
21:25We did want to get out there and really try and do a lot of these things for real,
21:28really get out there on the seas, climb the mountains, go in the caves, all of that.
21:32You got all the gods to deal with.
21:34Oh, here you go.
21:35Here you go.
21:38In one way or another, there's a certain odds towards that.
21:42Would you be comfortable in revealing whether you shot this film in order,
21:46like in order of the story?
21:47Would you be, would you tell us that?
21:50Well, the story's written in a nonlinear way.
21:52It's the original kind of nonlinear narrative.
21:54You start, you know, kind of halfway through the story.
21:57He's telling a lot of the story to like the,
21:59in the Nausicaa's father's palace or something like that.
22:02Well, we're, what we're jumping off from is the Ithacus.
22:05We start in Ithaca.
22:06We start with the Song of Odysseus.
22:09We start with this story.
22:10Everyone is sitting there going, okay, we know the Trojan War ended 10 years ago.
22:15Where is he?
22:16He hasn't come back.
22:17He left 20 years ago.
22:18And things are not altogether wonderful in his kingdom.
22:21Because Penelope's having to put off all these suitors who want to be the new king.
22:25Exactly.
22:25So Penelope's played by Anne Hathaway, who I've also worked with a couple times before.
22:32Did you catch that Devil Wears Prada movie?
22:34I watched it last night.
22:35Yeah.
22:36It was fabulous.
22:37Yeah, fantastic.
22:37With Emily Blunt as well and everything.
22:39Yeah, terrific.
22:40And her son is played by Tom Holland, who's also amazing.
22:45Who I've not worked with before, but would love to work with again.
22:49I mean, he's just an incredible talent, as everybody else but me knew before I sort of got into it
22:54with him.
22:54But he's so, so great.
22:56And they're, you know, holding the fort in Ithaca, fending off the suitors, the lead suitors played by Rob Pattinson,
23:03who I've also worked with before.
23:06And, yeah, so it really is a story about, ultimately, about homecoming.
23:11She was Catwoman.
23:14He was Spider-Man.
23:15He was the Batman.
23:17Like, if...
23:18And we have Jason Bourne as well.
23:19Oh, yeah.
23:20Jason Bourne.
23:21Would we, like, are superheroes directly related to these sort of Greek heroes?
23:26Very directly.
23:27No, they are.
23:27I mean, they're the original superheroes.
23:31And a lot of, I mean, even comic book culture, whether you're talking about Marvel or DC or all the
23:35rest, a lot of it comes pretty directly from the Homeric epics.
23:39And the thing about Homer is nobody knows if that was a person.
23:43You know, they don't know.
23:44I mean, Homer, in a way, is the sort of George Lucas, maybe, of his time.
23:49I mean, nobody really knows who this person was or whether it was more than one person.
23:52We don't even know if Homer was Homer's name.
23:54Exactly.
23:55After all, Ovid was Ovid's middle name, so you never can tell.
23:59Well, there you go.
23:59You're pulling rank again.
24:00But that's, yes.
24:02Tubles ovidios naso.
24:04I don't have to tell you.
24:04Oh, man, you don't have to tell me because I wouldn't know what the hell you were saying.
24:07But I absolutely, I mean, the thing about Homer is, yeah, it's the marvel of its day.
24:16I mean, that's the thing.
24:17And so I think there's very directly this desire for us to feel or believe that gods could walk amongst
24:24us.
24:24And I think the modern comic book is kind of our expression of that.
24:29We have an unusual treat.
24:31Christopher Nolan and our friends at Universal, hello, Universal, have brought us a brand new trailer.
24:37No one's seen this, right?
24:39No.
24:39Okay, for The Odyssey.
24:41Absolutely not.
24:45So we're going to roll this for you and for the people at home.
24:49And don't go anywhere because we'll be right back right after this is over with more Christopher Nolan.
24:54Anything we need to set up here?
24:55Not if I've done my job right.
24:59Let's find out.
25:05Ivan.
25:18Tell me what you remember.
25:23A wife?
25:29A son.
25:33And then what?
25:37We want no war.
25:45Help me go home.
25:51This is a household waiting for Master.
25:57I want you to choose me.
26:01I think his king is coming back.
26:03No, he's not.
26:10What would he do if he came back here and find all these suitors in his house?
26:16They're pining me for a daddy you didn't even know.
26:19Like some sniffling bastard.
26:23Who's looking after your wife and son?
26:26Do you see?
26:28Do you see?
26:28My dad is coming home.
26:31And in vengeance.
26:35Bringing it all.
26:51I need everyone in this party dead.
26:55I can still save them.
26:59You're a man who needs to control his fate.
27:04But you cannot control this.
27:07That world is gone.
27:13No one could stand between me and home.
27:18Now these are the gods.
27:22Keep us free.
27:31I think it's asleep.
27:52it appears you did your job right now an unbelievable cast uh besides damon uh anne
28:01hathaway tom holland robert pattinson charlotte theron john leguizamo who who haven't we seen
28:07anybody you want to tell us about that's not in that we haven't seen uh lupita nyong'o and we
28:12haven't seen zendaya uh cory hawkins just uh a ton of other talent i mean it's uh it's an incredible
28:21cast and they all they just work so hard for the movie and really deliver the goods for me i
28:27mean
28:27it was a thrill to work with them all i think i caught a glimpse of fur in there uh
28:32-huh is that
28:33odysseus's dog argos it is indeed wow indeed which wow which is one of the greatest moments in the
28:39whole story i it's no spoilers no spoilers no spoilers but yes it is one of the greatest moments
28:46in the story it's really one of the things that hooked me i'm a new dog owner came on yes
28:52thank you
28:54like new to dogs new to dogs i'd never had a dog growing up uh didn't have a dog when
29:00my kids were
29:01young we we denied that and then as soon as they left for college we got a dog and uh
29:05and then i
29:06feel about that they were a little a little bitter but uh but they love the dog too when they
29:12get to
29:12visit uh and uh i decided to do the odyssey because it is the ultimate it's the ultimate dog story
29:18um the
29:20film was shot entirely it's the first film shot entirely on imax cameras yes okay what does that
29:25mean to you as a director why a why'd you want to do that and what are the challenges of
29:28that i fell
29:29in love with imax film when i was about 16 uh going to uh films at the museum of science
29:36and industry in
29:37chicago like documentaries that were shot on imax and i always felt like what if you you know told a
29:43giant hollywood story in this format so on the dark night i convinced the studio convinced imax to let us
29:49try and do our action sequences which we did just the action scenes uh on on imax and then over
29:55the
29:55years i've tried to use the format kind of more and more um you know things like interstellar and
30:00oppenheim and everything we tried to do more and more of the film but what i always wanted to do
30:04was
30:04do the entire movie that way couldn't do it because the cameras are so noisy as the the software solutions
30:11that are filtering out camera noise got better i did tests with some of the stuff that shot with
30:15killian oppenheimer with him imax camera was very close and he's speaking and we had adr'd it
30:20and i could uncover his original dialogue but he was shouting over the camera so it was the wrong
30:26performance and that's the problem is is what we needed was a way to get a camera get an imax
30:32camera
30:32that you could actually shoot the dialogue it could be as close as as we are and you could perform
30:37in
30:37front of it and so we challenged imax to do that we said we're doing the odyssey this is
30:42this is the story if ever there were a story where you want to do the whole thing on imax
30:45this is it
30:46so can you find a way to build an enclosure for the camera you know they build us new cameras
30:51they
30:51build us this box that you put the camera in i mean it's giant it weighs about 400 pounds but
30:56it
30:57silenced the camera so we could you know do very intimate scenes a new type of camera this was shot
31:02on
31:02brand new camera is this called the nolan now
31:06it is not um actually it's called the keely and it's named after uh my friend david keely who sadly
31:12passed uh just uh as we were finishing the dailies on this film before we edited it and he had
31:19been my
31:19imax mentor for you know almost 20 years uh and he's the guy who made so much of what we've
31:25done possible
31:25and i'm proud to say that that he before he passed he was able to finish approving uh all of
31:31our last dailies
31:32and printing those and uh we miss him greatly but i'm thrilled um i'm absolutely thrilled uh that
31:45he's memorialized in the name of this this brand new camera which is it's i mean imax film is the
31:50highest quality imaging format that's ever been built well christopher thanks so much for being here
31:55always a pleasure to talk thank you the odyssey will be on theaters on july 17th christopher nolan everybody
32:02we'll be right back with dave groan
32:19welcome back safe
32:22my next guest is a 19-time grammy award-winning rock and roll hall of famer from foo fighters and
32:29nirvana
32:29uh please welcome back to the late show dave groan
32:53nice to see you again hey man how you been we're good uh foo fighters have been uh together for
33:0131 years
33:02that's true okay was there a specific moment when you knew you were ready to start a new band after
33:11nirvana
33:13well yes there actually was there was when nirvana ended i wasn't sure what to do i didn't know if
33:21i
33:21wanted to continue playing music i i it made me sad to think of of uh playing in another band
33:29um losing
33:30nirvana losing kurt was was a really uh really dark emotional experience and so i thought you know
33:38i just need to get my head together and i rented a car and drove around the ring of carry
33:44in ireland
33:45that's beautiful and i was out it's so gorgeous one of the most beautiful places in the world
33:49i was driving on this country road and there were like sheep and it was a great day and then
33:54the green
33:55rolling hills and all i wanted to do was disappear and as i was um driving down this this country
34:03road
34:03i see a hitchhiker and he had a kurt cobain t-shirt on and to me i thought okay this
34:14is the universe
34:15telling me you have to continue like you have to move on you have to go forward music has always
34:21been
34:21the love of my life it's helped me through some of my most difficult moments and um when i saw
34:28the
34:28kid with this with the kurt cobain t-shirt i thought okay i need to i need to keep going
34:35i have so
34:36much reverence and respect for the past but i need to have a future and that's kind of where it
34:42began
34:42well last year last year nirvana reunited for two performances fire aid uh fire aid benefit nelly and
34:54snl 50. yeah you guys don't do that very often no what is it like when when y'all get
35:00together to
35:02you know breathe life back into those songs well again you know i think sometimes when people think
35:08of bands they just think of instruments and songs and stuff but it really is it's this connection of
35:13people and life experience and relationships you know with other human beings and then you put on
35:19guitars and play music and and that translates your your love and respect and the relationship you have
35:25the other person really comes through the music so with nirvana it's like oh my god we went through some
35:30crazy stuff and uh and so when we get together to play it's a really it's a wild experience because
35:38when it's me and chris nova selich and pat smear when we sit down and like start into smells like
35:45teen spirit in a small room it's like dude it's it's nobody else makes that noise it sounds like smells
35:52like teen spirit and you're just like and we don't do it often and so when it does come around
35:59it's like
35:59a comet it's like this comet is coming back around and you see it streak by and it's like
36:07it's great well foo fighters have a new album your favorite toy the band's 12th studio album
36:15how'd you land on the name of this album your favorite toy you know it's funny there's a song
36:20that's called your favorite toy but when i first wrote it it was called for good and there's a line
36:28that says uh get back here that boy someone threw away your favorite toy for good and i'm like wow
36:34okay for good that's such a great name that has it but and like a week later i see the
36:40wicked movie
36:40comes out i'm like man what the damn yeah took it yeah you could have surfed that wave though you
36:47could have gotten right in on that i know i feel like people would have just would have bought this
36:52thinking it was that or bought that thinking it was this that's true exactly foo fighters on tour
36:59this summer it's been 40 years since little you went out on tour because you're a teenager yeah the
37:04first time little you went on tour for the first time is is it more enjoyable now that you're not
37:10couch surfing big time no i mean it's as i said earlier you know it's those early years and those
37:17early experiences like when i was here with my mom oh yeah that was wonderful years ago my mother wrote
37:24a book years ago and um she and i sat on the couch and and did an interview here at
37:30the at the studio and
37:32um and you know my mother was such an incredible person she was a public school teacher for 35 years
37:45she was and she was she was such a brilliant kind compassionate empathetic altruistic incredible funny
37:54charming sweet just the coolest the coolest person i've ever met in my life she was a teacher at my
38:01high school and i wasn't good at high school i wasn't good at elementary school either actually we brought
38:09my report cards when we were here anyway but she was so cool that um she realized i was just
38:16terrible
38:16at school she also realized i wasn't like a complete um uh i'm not going to say the word but
38:25she
38:26she understood like okay there's something you'll be able to figure life out she thought she had faith
38:31in me that i could do that so i left to go on tour when i was 17 years old
38:35and it was basically me asking
38:37my mother um hey i have an opportunity to tour the world and i want to leave school and she
38:44said
38:45you should go do that because you suck at school and here we are 40 years later well congratulations
38:53on finding the thing you don't suck at thanks man stick around for a performance by the foo

39:43But this is not a chance
39:47This is a conversation
39:50I've got another proposition
39:53Only under one condition
39:59I've got done the echo
40:06From side to side, to side, to side
40:12I've got done the echo
40:14From side, to side, to side, to side
40:21To side, to side, to side, to side
40:24To what, to what, to what, to what
40:27Here comes the clash
40:30I'm moving to dimension
40:33I'm moving up the picture
40:37Waiting for an ascension
40:40I wanna take it back
40:42Nobody here is truly free
40:46This is an emancipation
40:49From what I've got done the echo
40:58From side, to side, to side, to side
41:08I've got done the echo
41:11To side, to side, to side, to side
41:19To side, to side, to side
41:23I've been talking to this girl
41:29Sometimes you just gotta let go
41:54Some things you can't divide
41:57Some things you can't divide
42:00Some things you can't divide
42:01Sometimes you can't decide
42:04Do I? Do I?
42:08Some things you can't divide
42:11Some things you can't divide
42:14Sometimes you can't decide
42:17Do I? Do I?
42:30Do I? Do I?
42:34Some things you can't divide
42:37Some things you can't divide
