00:00The hunt is on for Scotland's Home of the Year.
00:04Wow, this is gorgeous.
00:07Interior designers Anna Campbell-Jones and Banjo Beale,
00:10along with architect Danny Campbell, are scouring the company.
00:15Yes.
00:16Soak up the sun like a lizard.
00:18They're judging properties on architectural merit,
00:22creative design and personal style.
00:25All our senses are alive.
00:26But they're also looking for those special qualities
00:30that make a house a home.
00:37This time, the judges are viewing the shortlist in the south.
00:42First up is a family home near Gatehouse of Fleet
00:45in Dunfreesound Galloway.
00:47It's home to Duncan, Vicky and their three boys,
00:51Freddie, Alfie and Robbie, Hetty the Cockapoo
00:54and a pony called Bramble.
00:57Duncan inherited his granny's house and the adjoining farmland,
01:01which has been in the family for generations.
01:03So this has been the home of our family since 1911.
01:07Our house used to be Granny's house,
01:10and she lived here for 50 years.
01:12And before she passed away, she was 101 at that point,
01:16she asked if we would live here.
01:19And I think she wanted to think of us enjoying a place
01:23that was her happy place.
01:25Our children have known nothing but living here.
01:28So to be able to live and work on the land
01:31and make a living from the land has been a real honour.
01:35The first change we made when we moved here was to create
01:38this wonderful extension that really brought the outside inside.
01:42Obviously fully led by Vicky.
01:44I've always loved creativity from a young age.
01:48And I love painting and I love textures and colours.
01:51And so putting the house together was great fun.
01:54For us, the outside space is really important as well.
01:57You know, it's a place where we feel belonging and connection.
02:02And, you know, you can hear the children laughing in the hallways
02:07and you can hear them singing in the shower.
02:09And I think that's what would make Granny smile.
02:12Yeah.
02:15Downstairs is an open-plan living and dining space.
02:19A living room, the kitchen, a nuke and office.
02:26Upstairs, there are four bedrooms and the primary bathroom.
02:30This is my favourite spot in our home
02:32because it's a space we can all enjoy together.
02:35We can enjoy the views in the summer
02:36and we can keep cosy by the fire in the winter.
02:40But will the judges' cockles be warmed by Granny's house?
02:45What a handsome house.
02:47Wow.
02:47That is gorgeous.
02:49Look at that view.
02:51Wow.
02:51This is such a promising start.
02:53They've got one of those swimming ponds as well.
02:55When you have a view like that,
02:57you want to be able to sit outside and enjoy it.
03:00And there's so many lovely little spots to sit, isn't there?
03:02And we've got an extension here,
03:05clad in kind of grey composite, isn't it?
03:07Yeah, that's right.
03:08Presumably to tie in with the grey stones
03:10on the corner of the building.
03:12I can't see a front door,
03:13so should we try going through that way?
03:14Mm-hmm.
03:15Absolutely.
03:23Oh, wow, look at that.
03:25It's the original building.
03:29Ooh.
03:30There's the heart.
03:31OK.
03:32Wow.
03:33You can see why.
03:35I'm trying to work out what this room was.
03:36I thought there was kitchen units over there,
03:38but it's a sideboard.
03:40Ooh.
03:41It's a great wraparound extension.
03:42It's Zuna.
03:43Huge amount of work, isn't it?
03:44This massive social space just connecting us to the garden.
03:47God, it's just like a little rumpus room,
03:50kind of outdoor dining kitchen indoors.
03:53I'm loving this autumnal colour palette.
03:55All of the textures, the coppers, the rusts, the wool throws.
04:01And because it steps back,
04:03you really do get a 180-degree view,
04:06even sitting quite deep into the building here.
04:09Mm.
04:10They've got two sets of the bifolding doors
04:12where they've had to have the column in the middle.
04:14That was the perfect spot to have the log burner
04:16without interrupting the view.
04:17Oh, yeah.
04:23Oh.
04:24What's this?
04:25A little snug.
04:26A little den.
04:27I love it.
04:28OK, this is cool.
04:30Hide the kids in the...
04:31Is that a safe?
04:34Get in the safe.
04:35Stop trying to make me go into tiny little spaces.
04:38For the kids?
04:39I think it's a kid's room
04:40and they can watch a film or do a bit of gaming
04:43and they've got their own social space away from the grown-ups.
04:46Lots of little storage boxes for all those things that kids have.
04:51Toys.
04:52Toys.
04:54I'm never going to be a parent.
04:55LAUGHTER
05:05Wow.
05:06This is nice.
05:07Ooh, it's a wee cosy little kitchen.
05:11Mm.
05:11That's a proper farmhouse kitchen, isn't it?
05:14Yeah.
05:14But with an updated twist.
05:16It's funny when they've added on that enormous extension,
05:18they've probably kept the kitchen exactly where it was.
05:21Yeah, well, it's lovely keeping the old cosy country kitchen, isn't it?
05:25You've got the beautiful Argus still.
05:27And you've also got what looks like a kind of scullery laundry room out there.
05:31So it's like having your kitchen zoned across two spaces.
05:35This is lovely, isn't it?
05:36The tall bar island.
05:38It's a great use of space, but, you know, functional, but fun as well.
05:47Look at all these circles on the vertical circulation.
05:55Ooh.
05:55Oh, look at this.
05:57Oh, that ceiling.
05:58Lovely.
05:59Oh, yes.
06:00Love that.
06:01Oh, and look at the detail of the rope.
06:03Hiding maybe a dodgy drawing.
06:05It's a great idea.
06:06I've never seen that before.
06:07That's ingenious, isn't it?
06:09I like it.
06:09Nautical, but nice.
06:11Oh, and great wardrobes with that washed effect on it.
06:16Lovely.
06:16They're quite unusual, and that bit in the middle is set back.
06:19It's quite different.
06:20I wonder if they're original.
06:22Yeah, there's lots going on in here, isn't there?
06:24I love the idea of having your jewellery on display.
06:27Mm-hmm.
06:28I mean, butcher's hooks is quite radical, but just turn all your lovely objects into decoration
06:33so you can look at them all the time.
06:34Hmm.
06:35Absolutely.
06:35Jewellery as art.
06:37Why not?
06:37And I mean, the writing's on the wall in this bedroom.
06:42And on the bed.
06:43And on the bed.
06:44Ah.
06:45And we're tucked up in the eaves, and we've got this lovely view.
06:48It's a much more elevated view than downstairs across the water.
06:54Ooh.
06:55Wow.
06:58Ah.
06:59A natural swimming pool.
07:00I've never seen one in real life before.
07:02That's great, isn't it?
07:03All the plants and gravel are doing the dirty work for you here.
07:07Filtering it.
07:08Shall we bring our swimming stuff?
07:10We could have gone for a little paddle.
07:11It would be like skinny dipping in a Monet painting.
07:14It's so beautiful, isn't it?
07:15I'm inspired.
07:17It's quite level with the ground, isn't it?
07:19It's almost like a kind of natural infinity pool.
07:21I think when you were down at that level.
07:24Yeah.
07:25When you were in the water, you'd be able to see straight to the sea.
07:29But how will our venerable judges rate Granny's house?
07:32One score will be held back until they've seen all three homes in the south,
07:38when their combined totals will be revealed.
07:41This homeowner clearly has a natural knack for putting things together.
07:47There's a wonderful mixture of styles of furniture, both old and new,
07:52and beautiful textures and colours.
07:55My favourite part of the home is actually the original building.
07:59There's a bit of me that feels that I maybe wouldn't have extended it at all,
08:03but the extension does create an amazing place to enjoy the view.
08:06I'm going to give this home a nine.
08:13As one of three boys myself, I could totally imagine growing up here
08:17and having the best time.
08:18There's a confident balance of modern living
08:21with the traditional stone and granite features.
08:24Happiness doesn't happen by accident.
08:26It's built with effort and determination,
08:28and I felt that with every inch of this home.
08:32I'm giving this home a ten.
08:38I think this home is just like a warm little hug.
08:43It's full of family, natural textures, the most gorgeous view.
08:47It has that indescribable feeling when you walk in, it whispers,
08:52I'm home.
09:01Next up in the south is a cottage in the village of Isle of Whithorn.
09:05Also in Denfries and Galloway.
09:08Melanie lives here in aptly named the House of Serendip.
09:14She brought her quirky style to this cottage in 2020.
09:19After a surprise tarot card reading predicted that her whole world
09:23was about to unexpectedly change.
09:26I thought, I'm going to sit and read what is in the lady magazine.
09:32And I flicked through to the back and there was this enchanting 1700s cottage.
09:38I phoned up and said, could I come and have a look at it?
09:40And then when I pulled up outside, I knew it was mine.
09:44It was quite stressful to start with because there was no heating.
09:47And I moved in in October and it was warmer outside the house than it was inside the house.
09:54A lot of things I already had, so I've dressed around it.
10:00It's very recycled because as an old nurse, we didn't have lots of money.
10:05So you just get used to doing mend really.
10:09I'm very pleased with my tented ceiling, which I learnt how to do many years ago
10:15from a book called Affordable Splendour.
10:19I would like to be able to sort of showcase how you can do things
10:24if you've got a chronic health condition like I have, which is MS.
10:28I've created a space that I can grow old in and also will be beautiful.
10:35So if I'm not able to mobilise very well, I can sit and just enjoy the space.
10:41It's very nurturing.
10:43It's full of things that hold memories for me and make me smile.
10:50Downstairs, there's a sitting room, kitchen, bathroom and office.
11:00And up the ornate staircase, there are two bedrooms.
11:05So this is my favourite place in the home because it has a ley line that runs through it
11:10and it's the space where I like to meditate.
11:15But what will the judges divine as they visit the house of Serendit?
11:22Oh, this looks ancient.
11:26It's so cute and colourful as well, isn't it?
11:29Gorgeous and it's blooming, isn't it?
11:32All of these plants have got labels on them telling you what they do.
11:37Olive for a complete mental exhaustion.
11:41But this window here, it's almost set up like a shop window, like a display.
11:45The house is like a little apothecary school, isn't it?
11:49All right, let's go learn some more.
12:00Gosh, I feel like tiptoeing in here.
12:04Gosh, it's like an Aladdin's cave, isn't it?
12:06There's so many things, so much to explore.
12:11Look at this gold stenciling on the door and then the door has also got patterned glass
12:17and then behind the patterned glass is lace and behind the lace is patterned wallpaper.
12:22It's like, what?
12:23Taking layering to a whole new level.
12:25They have, haven't they?
12:27You know, when I read my horoscope this morning for the first time ever,
12:30it did tell me I was going to have a very stimulating experience today,
12:33so maybe this is it.
12:35Welcome.
12:36Welcome to the dark side.
12:38Look at the coffered ceiling.
12:40Each piece of the ceiling has been filled with a different material.
12:43We've got anaglypter here and different upholstery fabrics here all the way across.
12:48And never upholstered their ceiling.
12:50Yes.
12:50Wow.
12:51Look at that fireplace there.
12:53That looks amazing.
12:54Let's go have a look.
12:59Ooh.
13:01That's a gentlemanly seat for you.
13:03Ah, look.
13:04Come in.
13:04The little dainty one for you.
13:06Oh.
13:07And a big old box.
13:08I feel like we're in a really cool pub.
13:11Yeah, there's something pub-viby about it with the stone and the dark and the candles.
13:16Oh, I think there's something a bit more magical about this place.
13:20I mean, this is the favourite spot.
13:22So where I'm sitting, I can see back out into the street,
13:25but I can also see this incredible ceiling and all of these different patterns.
13:30I mean, every wall seems to have a different finish on it.
13:32It's kind of casting a bit of a spell on me, this home.
13:42Wow.
13:42Wow.
13:43This is where they make all their potions and do their tax return.
13:49You said this place was casting a spell on you.
13:51It's casting a smell on me.
13:53There really is such a strong array of smells and aromas and things to take in.
13:57It's very stimulating in here.
13:58I think when you live in an old cottage like this,
14:01normally you'd have this urge to bring in as much natural light
14:04because the walls are so thick.
14:05But they've actually put up additional partitions to block the light out even more
14:09and just lean into that dark, moody, candlelit environment.
14:13I love that.
14:14You're never going to make rooms in a home like this feel bright and airy.
14:18So yeah, go dark and mysterious.
14:24Oh, wow.
14:25Oh.
14:26Oh.
14:26Mind your head.
14:28Oh, wow.
14:29Oh, this is lovely.
14:30Look at this.
14:32Squeeze in.
14:33Wow.
14:35Oh, this is very cool, isn't it?
14:37Yeah.
14:37This space is so stylish.
14:39It's a lot brighter than the other spaces, but there are a few telltale signs.
14:42I think this is an accessible bathroom as well.
14:44So we've got a seat that you can sit on when you're getting ready.
14:48You've got the toilet seats a little higher.
14:51Higher, Lou.
14:52They've got a seat in the shower as well.
14:54Same colour as the tiles, so it's nice and discreet.
14:57And I love how there's a glass screen that the whole room softened by hanging the fun curtain there.
15:03It just warms up the whole room.
15:05It's still again layered like the rest of the house, isn't it?
15:08It feels like a room.
15:10And actually having a seat in the shower is a great idea for everyone.
15:14And you shave your toes.
15:25Oh, this is a kitchen for making a potion or having a cauldron on the go, isn't it?
15:32Yeah, they've got a cauldron, haven't they?
15:33That fire looks like a beast.
15:36Wow.
15:36They're even eaten by candlelight.
15:38I love that.
15:39Look at these glow-in-the-dark candle holders.
15:42I mean, it's definitely leaning in.
15:43There are so many different genres of style in here from Victorian crockery to the embroidered tasseled pelmet with flowers
15:53in front of it.
15:54And then a kind of industrial tap at the sink and then the kind of cottagecore little curtain under the
16:01worktop.
16:01I mean, it's everything getting piled on, but it's all working.
16:10Look at the trompe l'oeil panelling on the walls.
16:12That's really fun, isn't it?
16:18Oh, wow.
16:23This is a cosy haven, isn't it?
16:26It's like a marble effect on the ceiling, isn't it?
16:28It's funny, they've got a different wallpaper on each wall.
16:31It's almost like at Christmas time when you get to the end of wrapping presents and you've kind of run
16:35out,
16:35you just basically just use all the bits and bobs you've got left.
16:38Well, I do anyway.
16:40Yeah.
16:40I'm surprised this isn't the favourite spot.
16:42There's a whole wall full of hearts over there.
16:51This home celebrates the dark arts and crafts.
16:54I think there's proof here in the healing power of home.
16:57A place that is a canvas for your creativity, a sanctuary for your soul,
17:03and somewhere really warm and comforting to kind of spend your days.
17:07It has that indescribable feeling in here that this is someone's pride and joy,
17:13and they've really put their heart and soul into it.
17:15I'm giving this home a 10.
17:21I have never been in a home like this before.
17:24From outside, it's a cute little cottage with little square windows and lovely storybook planting.
17:31Step inside and you're met with the unexpected.
17:34A complete explosion of personality and visual drama.
17:38I do wish the original architecture had been allowed to join the party a little bit more.
17:42The ancient features of the cottage could have really elevated the storytelling and the styling even further
17:48and allowed the eccentricity to really embed into the rich historical context.
17:53I'm giving this home an eight.
17:59This home brings together an eclectic array of incredible ingredients to create an alchemy that's utterly authentic and unique.
18:11Creating a home like this, which may not be everyone's cup of tea, but is absolutely yours, is the ultimate
18:19act of self-care and I have to applaud it.
18:33Finally in the south, a refurbished family home in a remote glen near the village of Thornhill.
18:40Andrew, Roz and their newborn son Jack moved here recently, but a lot of work has gone into the place
18:48since they bought Shepherd's Cottage.
18:50A total cosmetic refurb inside and outside.
18:54We just kind of went from room to room and focused on a room at a time.
18:58It took a year to do it to kind of get everything to the stage that we're happy with.
19:03There was a garage at the front that we knocked down and put the front deck in and put a
19:08hot tub in the back and then put in a sauna and a plunge pool as well.
19:13Probably the outside. The location's like the number one thing for me. Just the view down the valley.
19:19Just as soon as we came round the corner and saw it for the first time, just thought that's an
19:23amazing location basically.
19:26We love the outdoors. Just wanted a bit of a quieter life. Just love the peacefulness. So yeah, just love
19:32spending time here.
19:33I'm quite proud of it. I think I've done an alright job. So we'll see what the judges think.
19:42Downstairs there's a substantial open plan kitchen and living space. Two bedrooms, one with en suite and another bathroom.
19:52Upstairs there are three more bedrooms and the primary bedroom with en suite.
19:57So this is our favourite spot in the home. Just the view really. We like to come out here and
20:01enjoy a coffee in the morning or a beer at night with friends and just kind of relax and enjoy
20:07the view.
20:10But what will the judges view be of Shepherd's Cottage?
20:15What an amazing location. Yes. It's pretty epic. And I can see why the front door is tucked around in
20:23this little corner out of the wind.
20:25Yeah. Looks like a couple of different agricultural buildings joined together. You've got probably the Shepherd's Hut, a barn, a
20:34bit of everything.
20:34It's not just the old buildings. They've also got two dormers facing down the valley. This really quirky corner room
20:40and a little extension too.
20:42Oh, you could eat your shwarmer in the corner dormer. Perfect.
20:46There's an enormous number of photovoltaic panels as well. I wonder if this home is maybe off grid.
20:53Right. Right. Let's get out this wind. It's freezing.
21:03Wow. It's nice to be in the warm, isn't it?
21:08Oh, this looks like you guys are still outside.
21:10Yeah. Wow. This is a nice little cosy lobby. What's in here? Whoa, a spa bath.
21:17What? Come inside, take your clothes off, have a spa bath and then, you know, then start your day.
21:24And there's a lovely big open plan space in there. Should we go and have a look?
21:26Yeah, absolutely.
21:31Wow, that is a big space. Isn't it? But there's so many perspectives going on because those windows feel squashed.
21:39So you're kind of, you've got the magic view out there. You're just kind of looking to the fence.
21:44Yeah, I think that's probably why they've opened that out. That's where the lowest part of the ceiling is.
21:48And those windows are really small. And then the cooker hood is absolutely enormous as well.
21:52Looks like they've got two ovens next to each other.
21:55Well, I mean, true to a farmhouse kitchen, you're feeding your shearers, your shepherds, your farmhands.
22:01You know, you've got to have a lot of room to cook or you might just want to throw a
22:05big party.
22:09Ooh. Oh, wow. That's a strong cushion game.
22:13A lot of cushions.
22:14OK.
22:15It tells you something about the scale of this space, that there's room for two L-shaped sofas in here.
22:21And there's still like a football pitch of rug in between them.
22:25There's so many nice little spaces as well. There's such deep sills that could become really interesting little zones.
22:31But we've still got these breakout spaces. They've got their music bit over there, but starting to feel a little
22:35bit more of their personality.
22:38Yeah. Well, look at this little ombre wall behind us. They're wanting to bring the outside in, aren't they?
22:43It kind of looks like the horizon. They've kind of got the slate over the fireplace. They're drawing all the
22:50colours. They're doing all the things you're supposed to do.
22:54I really like that little contemporary wood burner in that blue, which is the same as the colour of the
22:59front door.
23:05A heavenly white staircase. Garden of Eden.
23:09OK, so we've got what looked like two guest bedrooms with some really nice antique furniture.
23:16Yeah. Let's find the principal bedroom.
23:22Ooh, tartan carpet. Ooh, tartan around in here. Wow. Nifty tucking all of the storage under the eaves there.
23:33Oh, a wee little cot. Must have a baby.
23:36Oh, yeah. That's a really quirky place to put your bed, right by the window with the radiator behind.
23:43But there's not many other options in here, are there?
23:45The bedrooms that we passed on the way here had some really beautiful antique furniture.
23:51I'm sort of surprised that there aren't more pieces like that in the principal bedroom.
24:02Wow. Look at the view. Yeah.
24:06Catch some vitamin D.
24:10Oh, there she is.
24:16OK. Now we're talking.
24:18What a nice bit of decking.
24:19Yeah. That's actually really clever, because we're immediately out of the wind.
24:23It's so much warmer down here, and you've got a 360 degree view.
24:27That is such a one-of-a-kind view to have on your doorstep, and what a versatile space.
24:31I can see where it's the favourite spot.
24:34It was absolutely majestic driving up to this home, along the dirt track, past the sheep, when the stone buildings
24:42reveal themselves.
24:43And from the outside, it's absolutely spectacular.
24:46Inside, it's really large, and it's in charge, this space, which is really hard to decorate.
24:52But they've done a really great job starting off pulling it together.
24:56I think what I'm craving is a little bit more texture and warmth, but that comes with time.
25:01So I think this is a really beautiful start, and I think it can only get better from here.
25:06I'm giving this home an eight.
25:11The scale of this home and its exterior restoration are undeniably impressive.
25:18This would be a brilliant place for people to come together.
25:20And they've started to make some correct moves with the choices of wall coverings and some of the textiles and
25:27patterns.
25:27I've also enjoyed seeing antique furniture appearing in some of the rooms, and I think it would definitely benefit from
25:33more items of character in this home.
25:35I'm going to give this home a seven.
25:43This home sits within a truly remarkable rural valley.
25:46It's maybe the most beautiful setting for a home I've ever seen.
25:50The old stone structure has charm and presence.
25:53It's a building that really belongs to the land.
25:56For me, though, the interior felt like more of an arm wrestle with the architecture rather than working with it.
26:02Most of all, I would love to see a really deliberate move to frame that gasp-worthy view and bring
26:08the world-class landscape to the front of the stage.
26:17Now that the judges have seen all three homes, the final scores can be revealed.
26:22First up is Granny's house near Gatehouse of Fleet.
26:25This beautiful old building, extravagantly extended.
26:30I gave it a nine.
26:32Danny, you gave it a ten.
26:36Banjo, what did you think of it?
26:37Well, it was a gorgeous family home.
26:40I think it was all about that view.
26:42It was natural-born thriller, that house.
26:45From the pond to the light that it was soaking up.
26:48I gave it a ten.
26:50Wow.
26:50So that gives Granny's house 29.
26:53We need to go back for a swim, if not have us.
26:58Starting strong in the south.
27:01Next, it's the House of Serendip in Isle of Witchorn.
27:05Danny, you gave it an eight.
27:08Banjo, you gave it a ten.
27:11I was completely bewitched by this home.
27:15I loved the verve with which this homeowner had really created something that was utterly unique to them.
27:22And certainly not like anything I'd ever seen before.
27:26And that's why I also gave it a ten.
27:29Wow.
27:30So that gives House of Serendip 28.
27:34Oof, by your whisker.
27:35That's a really high score.
27:37And finally, Shepherd's Cottage near the village of Thornhill.
27:43Banjo, you gave it an eight.
27:47I gave it a seven.
27:49Danny, what are your thoughts?
27:51Well, this home sits in a truly jaw-dropping location and with so much potential as well.
27:57I gave it a seven.
27:59Okay.
28:00So that gives Shepherd's Cottage 22.
28:04A gorgeous home.
28:06Incredible.
28:07But we have our finalist for the south.
28:12Granny's House wins this round and is off to the final of Scotland's Home of the Year.
28:20Next time.
28:21Oh, wow!
28:22The judges are in the North East and Northern Isles.
28:25Hands off the glass.
28:26On their search for Scotland's Home of the Year.
28:56Towards the하ers with Katherine Langoocer.
