00:09the same thing my dad used to tell me is the same thing I tell the kids here you
00:13got to do better than me if I'm the unit director of the clubhouse I want to see
00:16you be the CEO one day I want to see you be the board member and do it for your
00:21next generation and the next and the next
00:31this particular building on University Avenue in the Bronx is like a beacon a
00:36beacon of hope it's unique it's optimistic it's the glass half-full
00:43we're Kips Bay Boys and Girls Club let me show you what this building is
00:56since 1915 the Kips Bay Boys and Girls Club has been
00:59providing security community and inspiration of thousands of young New
01:04Yorkers who are dealing with challenging circumstances or just looking for a
01:07safe place to hang out after school in 2010 the Kudaira Clubhouse opened in the
01:12West Bronx this five-story building is filled with educational recreational and
01:17creative possibilities with programs supporting homework college
01:21applications competitive sports stem fine arts podcasting and so much more I
01:27like to dance I like to do podcast I like to cook well I don't cook I eat up in
01:35the
01:35summer when I first came here I was kind of shy kind of quiet I did not have blue
01:41hair I've been coming here for almost 12 years now I feel safe I feel like I'm
01:47heard if you don't have that kind of support system outside of here this place
01:51will always have it during the times I was here I'm the I lost my big brother and it
01:56made me understand it's like there's nothing out here in the streets as of
01:59right now I am a college athlete and I feel like I could go beyond that just by
02:03being in this building around the right people it made me understand that I have
02:05a purpose in this life I'm proud of so many of the kids here I seen them walk in
02:10as one person and you know put in a box as to what they're supposed to be like or
02:15people have you know given them a stigma to and they have changed
02:24I had one or two very valuable staff members that took me under their wing I could have easily hung
02:32out with a different crowd I could have easily made decisions that didn't empower my life and if it
02:38were not for Kips Bay the chances are that would have happened fortunately enough I went to college
02:44and ultimately played professional baseball with the Kansas City Royals I started at Kips Bay Boys and
02:50Girls Club when I was nine and started dancing West African dancing it has taken me all over the world
02:56I've done Broadway feature films live tours so it just kind of you know opened up a few gates and
03:04it just
03:05gave us a haven to do everything we wanted without the chaos from the streets this clubhouse is clearly
03:14committed to young people's futures but the teen lounge it's a little stuck in the past but it's got
03:19potential by investing in this space we can enrich so many more lives for years to come and every day
03:29in
03:29the teen lounge it nourishes dreams and appetites thanks to its very own bodega sometimes you have
03:39the teens run it so then they can see how like to conduct the little business they can come in
03:43rather
03:43than going to the corner store late at night so it's for them to be safe as well where we're
03:52sitting
03:52right now we are in the most impoverished district in the Bronx if we don't have individuals stepping up
03:58and letting them know that there's more opportunity beyond their one square mile area then it makes
04:04it a lot more difficult to create positive contributors to society what's up everyone how's it going on
04:12George to the Rescue is sponsored in part by 3M for more information go to 3MDIY.com
04:22what's up everyone how's it going on we're all huge fans of what goes on at the Boys and Girls
04:27Club
04:28specifically what goes on here at Gibbs Bay how important it is for everybody who comes here the
04:33community sometimes there's a little wear and tear rooms get loved and uh it's time for a refresh all
04:38right having George see us and see what we need it means so much more than anybody can understand like
04:46this community truly needs it these teens need it and now they'll have it this is real man this is
04:51gonna take place it's gonna be monumental all right cats out of the bag Boys and Girls Club knows that
05:00we are doing a rescue here now it's time for demo Josh got demo underway I see they're already filling
05:06up the truck I am so excited to be working with Josh Wiener again and Silver Lining this is Josh's
05:12fifth
05:12time being on George's Rescue I've been involved in Gibbs Bay for 35 years doing their show houses it
05:17raises money for the Gibbs Bay Boys and Girls Club it's just such a valuable incredible part of the
05:23community and you can't believe the stories that come out of this place being here just affects their
05:33whole lives taking off all these wall panels that we had and then we're taking up these floors which
05:37we have all new vinyl flooring going down and then over here we have the bodega yeah so we've got
05:45all
05:45new tile work going in here we're gonna do new floors we've got all new cabinetry coming in it's
05:49gonna be a better bodega situation let's get it done right good John from signature demo is taking care
05:57of all our demo I think it's the third job you've done with us every time you come in you
06:01make it
06:01disappear we got to bring this thing down to the basics we're gonna rip those panels off the wall
06:06we're gonna rip up the current floor whoever put it down before they did it the right way this thing
06:11is adhered to the floor while we're finishing up over here Brittany's headed over to meet up with
06:19our designer Cory Damon Jenkins to discuss what the space really needs so our teenagers they want
06:26their freedom so our goal is not only to inspire them but to mentor them at the same time while
06:31giving them that freedom using this space to give them time to do homework but also relax so I was
06:36thinking maybe breaking this very large space up into zones you know having like a little lounge space of a
06:42spa to have a snack from the bodega right places do homework I was thinking we might design like a
06:48tech bar
06:48oh my god amazing they could like charge their devices the theme for this space could be roots and
06:55that was driven by this really you know awesome wall covering from Arte it's basically a series of roots
07:01that are kind of growing up in their multicolors you know I love the fact that it appeals to the
07:06sensory
07:06need if you haven't noticed I'm playing with the texture yes I pay attention to all of this we're
07:14also going to focus on durable elements how many kids do you think on average will be using this
07:19space my goal is to have at least 30 to 40 in that space we have a 250,000 double
07:25rubs double rubs
07:26mean that if you do this you have to do this 250,000 times before you make an actual indent
07:33or impact on
07:34this fabric oh wow this is a sample of the countertop material for the bodeski the bodega is a really
07:40key almost like heartbeat in this space so we want to make this a very functional space but really the
07:46nucleus of this new teen lounge when you walk into certain spaces you feel the energy in a space and
07:52I
07:52feel like when you walk into that space this is finally gonna feel like this is theirs I think back
08:00being little girls like you and you know wanting to do things like this when I knew I had the
08:05opportunity you guys will have a space to go and dream just as big as we did looking for Bluetooth
08:16hearing protection with premium sound quality and continuous charging from indoor and outdoor
08:21light the 3m work tunes connect plus solar wireless hearing protector has got you covered with Powerfoil
08:28solar cell technology that continuously charges in any light and a 26 decibel noise reduction rating
08:35this water and sweat resistant device will help keep you safe and sink for all-day enjoyment
08:40comfortably make calls rock out or listen to your favorite podcast all while tackling the tasks at hand
08:51well Ben this place is coming along man good to see you yeah we've been going like crazy we got
08:59this
08:59place covered from top to bottom Metropolitan painting is here Apollo Electric is installing all of our
09:05lighting and diversify is installing 1400 square feet of this beautiful LVT flooring donated by Matters Services
09:13So it will look like wood flooring,
09:15except be a lot more resilient and forgiving.
09:17And durable.
09:18And teens.
09:19Teens.
09:21We got the team from Premium Grade Millwork here
09:24installing all the moldings and trim and materials
09:27that were donated by Prince Lumber.
09:30This Boys and Girls Club, this is a very important part
09:33of this community.
09:34And that is why people from this community coming here
09:36to make this space something really special for the teens
09:39that are going to use it for generations.
09:45We are really excited about this one.
09:47We're teaming up with Russell Wilson and Sierra's Why Not You
09:51Foundation to support this project, which the kids
09:53are going to be amped about.
09:55They've been doing this work since 2014,
09:57and it's all about giving kids the confidence
10:00to chase what they want and think bigger.
10:02We got into their commitment to Kips Bay
10:04and had a fun conversation with podcast stars Davina and Diamond.
10:07We have some special guests, Sierra, Russell, and George.
10:11It's not really about us.
10:12It's about you today for us.
10:14So we're happy to be here.
10:15Why is it important to both of you to help the youth?
10:18We were dreamers when we were growing up.
10:20You know, our whole Why Not You Foundation is about the youth.
10:22It starts with Y-O-U, which you can't spell youth without Y-O-U.
10:25I think about those that have come before us that have paved the way
10:28for us to do what we get to do, and we hope we can continue to open up doors
10:33just as wide as they were for us.
10:35I mean, look at you guys now.
10:37You're so successful.
10:38I will tell you, girls, when you have this beautiful big dream,
10:41it is beautiful, but there's a little hard work that comes with it,
10:45and you don't see that when you're dreaming so big.
10:46So if you choose to do what you love, always keep working hard
10:50and reaching higher to accomplish what you want to.
10:52Oh, my God, you're so, like, majestic.
10:55Oh, my God.
10:56I have a question for you.
10:58So, like, after you're done for a football game, does people stink?
11:03Oh, yeah, yeah.
11:05You don't want to smell a football locker room.
11:06Ooh!
11:07Oh, my God.
11:08Yeah.
11:08It's called funk-tified.
11:11I think sometimes when we do interviews with kids, it's kind of the best.
11:14Their hearts are so pure.
11:16Maybe we're seeing the beginning of their blossoming careers as journalists.
11:19Who knows?
11:20They asked some amazing questions, so they were not playing right now.
11:22They were playing around with us.
11:23So let me ask you guys a couple questions.
11:24What do you guys want to be when you grow up?
11:26A professional dancer.
11:27A professional dancer?
11:28I want to be a lawyer when I grow up, because, like, I'm just, I just,
11:32my mom said I talk a lot, so I'll be good for the job.
11:35You like to read a lot?
11:37You got to read a lot now.
11:38Yeah.
11:38And I love solving puzzles.
11:40But then I also want to be an actor, man.
11:43Well, the cool thing is that we're not limited by what we do at the base, right?
11:47We can do even more.
11:48I always get emotional in these moments because I think back being little girls like you,
11:53and, you know, wanting to do things like this when I knew I had the opportunity.
11:57And so you guys will have a space to go and dream, you know, just as big as we did.
12:02For me, when I was coming up as an artist, going to the rehearsal hall was, it was an outlet
12:07for me.
12:07And I think that kids need outlets in their lives.
12:10They need places where they can go and dream and be creative and also be amongst their community of friends.
12:15And there's something about places like that where the magic begins.
12:18A safe place that they can free their mind, free their spirit, and just go for whatever the dream they
12:23have.
12:24Cory's down there with his team. They're busy little bees getting everything put together.
12:27Are you guys excited?
12:28Yes.
12:29Yeah.
12:30Give me a little handstander.
12:32It is going to be epic.
12:37Today's is like the awesome.
12:39I'm very excited because Sierra was a person I had looked up to.
12:43It inspired me to keep going and be good at what I do.
12:47Why not you?
12:53All right.
12:54I got some craft services for the bodega.
12:57Look at the bodega.
12:58It's not a very big room, but it took a lot of help to get to where it is right
13:02now.
13:03When we demoed it, we realized they didn't waterproof the floor.
13:05We redid that.
13:07Artistic Tile donated its tile.
13:08Castell did an unbelievable install.
13:10It takes me back.
13:12It's going to connect four.
13:13Right?
13:13Can I get the connect four?
13:15We also have a new stone countertop from Cosentino.
13:19And then Black Sheep came and installed all new cabinets and doors that have been re-laminated
13:25thanks to Daniel DiMarco.
13:26Kohler came to our aid with gorgeous, spectacular plumbing fixtures.
13:30It's going to be an unbelievable place for them to work and learn about business.
13:34So it's inspiring.
13:36The bodega, that literally is just the tip of the iceberg.
13:38Let's get our design on.
13:43Protection meets performance.
13:443M WorkTunes in-ear electronic hearing protector.
13:47Bluetooth 6.0.
13:4819-decibel noise reduction rating.
13:49And a 10-hour battery so you can hear your music, take your calls, and help protect your
13:53hearing from the first nail to the last.
13:54All-in-one lightweight earbuds.
13:56WorkTunes.
13:57Work smarter.
13:57Work safer.
14:07Wow, look at this place.
14:10Hey, George.
14:11Corey, man.
14:12Everyone hard at work.
14:13All right, I'm coming.
14:13You know me.
14:14I can't stay away.
14:17So my theme is roots and raindrops celebrating the inner child.
14:21I brought in this really spectacular, gigantic, oversized chandelier from Curry & Company.
14:26I know people will be like, you know, why are you putting a grand chandelier in a teen
14:30lounge?
14:30But I think that we help our children grow into the adults we want them to be by surrounding
14:35them in beautiful environments.
14:38I like the way it's coming down, but you also kind of feel like you're in a forest.
14:42I think the wall covering from Arte was absolutely spectacular.
14:47So grateful for the meticulous craftsmanship of Bruno Abadanza and Abadanza Contracting.
14:56We have a giant truck from Morris Movers, and it is filled to the brim with furniture
15:02from Perigold.
15:03We are so grateful for this huge donation of furniture courtesy of Perigold, and we are
15:08going to be laying it out on our space here.
15:09Everything from sofas and tables and chairs.
15:13Oh my.
15:15This is a Corey Damon Jenkins design.
15:18Corey draws it up and then it comes to you.
15:21We custom builder and upholstered.
15:24This is spectacular vegan leather from Kravitz.
15:26This is really great, durable stuff.
15:28They can make a mess and wipe it down and not feel guilty.
15:31When the team from Eva Design and Decorating built it, they set it up so that Apollo Electric
15:36could electrify it so that the students, when they're in here, they're eating a snack from
15:40the bodega, they can charge phone, laptop, you name it.
15:45And this is the piece de resistance, the sofa.
15:52That's a thing of beauty right there.
15:55Would have made it easier if I'm on it like this?
15:57I chose Perigold because they offer a really unparalleled level of access to some of the
16:02world's finest home furnishings.
16:04Really, all under one roof.
16:06They've got everything.
16:07I commissioned Antonio Pagarin to create these pieces of art for the club, showing what they
16:11could be when they grow up.
16:12Police officers, firemen, doctors, scientists, educators, dancers, the sky's the limit.
16:18And they're colorful, they're joyful, and I'm so thrilled they're airing the space.
16:24Look at this, the man who never rests.
16:26I thought that a tech bar would be really fun and very usable for the kids because we
16:31have some nerds in our club, and we love that.
16:33We want them to really focus on their education, so we want a nice space for them to hang out.
16:37There's something unbelievable going on.
16:38What's going on right here?
16:40Oh, yeah, it's charging.
16:41There's three of them here.
16:42The kids will be able to use these, put their phones down.
16:44Free Power made these pads.
16:46This is Constantino stone, which is a man-made material.
16:49And then Castell tile, they cut it and installed it.
16:52I mean, and it shines through the countertop, which is incredible.
16:55That's how I know where to put it.
16:55And there's no cords.
16:56It's George Proof.
16:57It is, it's George Proof.
16:58I know where to charge my phone.
17:05The incredible cherry on the top of our sundae, the Why Not You Foundation,
17:10they have played a huge part in us getting to where we are.
17:13Everyone who comes here, why can't they be the next great leader?
17:17It all starts here, and it's about building them up and giving them a place where they feel safe
17:20and supported.
17:22Kip Spade, Boys and Girls Club, what's up?
17:25You guys ready to see it?
17:27Yes!
17:29Oh my God, I knew it was so good!
17:32Oh my God!
17:36George to the Rescue is sponsored in part by 3M.
17:38For more information, go to 3MDIY.com.
17:47All hands in, on three, Kip Spade Boys and Girls Club.
17:51One, two, three, Kip Spade!
17:55Let's do this.
17:57I'm not really excited for me.
17:59How are you?
18:00How are you?
18:03Oh my God, that is so good!
18:06Oh my God!
18:23This is beautiful.
18:24I would have never thought we would have had a space like this.
18:27It's bringing like, let's say we're the plants and you're the water.
18:31You're like, making us grow and grow.
18:34We have games, we have games!
18:35Do y'all want to play right now?
18:38It can charge your phone, it can charge your phone, put your phone, put your phone.
18:44The energy in here is incredible, the kids are so excited, like listen to them, right?
18:57The snacks are on me today.
19:01Me, myself, I'm going to be honest, I've been absent.
19:04But this just brought me together and gave me motive to come here often.
19:08I know a lot of kids are going through it at home and I just feel like, you know,
19:11sometimes they just need someone to clear their mind out.
19:13And I thought this would be the perfect spot for them.
19:15What are we watching?
19:16What are we watching, guys?
19:18Before, it was just so bland and plain.
19:21But the Teen Lounge, it gives like a chance of relaxation and peace.
19:45Teams tend to get forgotten about.
19:47Now, this is home for them to come back to and there's no limitation on that.
19:52This is an example of what happens to society when everyone comes together and builds up
19:59their youth so that they can be the next leaders of tomorrow.
20:03My kids are curious, right?
20:04So they're walking around and they're like, who's this?
20:07Who's that?
20:08What do you do?
20:08What do you do?
20:09And they just created new passions and dreams for them.
20:12Like, I want to be a Cory.
20:14I want to be a George.
20:16Like, it just opened doors.
20:17So I'm just, thank you.
20:21It's all about investing in you.
20:23And nobody does that better than the Why Not You Foundation.
20:26And since it's such an incredible transformation,
20:29the founders said, we should probably be there too.
20:32So without further ado, Russell Wilson and Ciara.
20:42Oh my goodness.
20:45I look up and I see those words, why not you?
20:48And this screams so loud.
20:49Why not you be able to dream so big in this space?
20:53We wanted to come see you guys, your smiling faces.
20:55We knew this was going to be a special day.
20:56Okay, so we got a surprise for y'all.
20:58We need y'all to help with the surprise.
20:59The Why Not You Foundation is giving an additional a million dollars.
21:06It's exciting.
21:07You know, we get to support their vision, vice versa.
21:10We're doing it together.
21:12We're very powerful together.
21:13We get to inspire together.
21:15And I won't forget days like this.
21:17It's not just about the money that we are able to give.
21:19It's really about the resources and the time, love, and energy
21:22into this special, special place.
21:24We just want to continue to partner with great people.
21:26And when you're partnering with great people, great things happen.
21:28Everyone coming together actually like really brought warmth to my heart.
21:32It shows that there's people in the world that care.
21:34It's giving us freedom.
21:36We'll be recording.
21:37It's going to be however much it's useful to everyone.
21:38We'll be going together, here tomorrow.
21:39This one will be working forever on last week?
21:39Yeah!
21:39Good job.
