00:22in New Orleans a homicide can occur anywhere anytime there's a party going
00:28on one part of the city and it's a homicide on the other side
00:32New Orleans 9-1-1 it's a location of the emergency I'm at the corner of Washington and Magnolia
00:39somebody just got shot in front of my door they're not on the ground right now I think she did
00:46all right officers they'll be dispatched to the location
00:57ma'am ma'am she shot right in the head did you hear any gunshots while you were walking
01:07there's a casing right there right there it's a homicide
01:201627 can you raise a homicide detective for me
01:28driving to a scene definitely the calm before the storm I know I'm going to see a dead body
01:38right now we're headed to Central City homicide by shooting on Washington Avenue right now I don't
01:46have any details just a female shot at the location two spent shell cakes on the scene
01:51and she appeared to have sustained two gunshot wounds Central City is actually the district
01:59where I started my investigation I was a person's crime detective there for about four or five
02:08years yeah this would be considered home to me
02:17gentlemen I am making up so we're just over here theorizing well what we got on scene it's a great
02:22place to do a murder it's like quiet we got no witnesses cameras that we can see four casings we
02:29don't know what caliber yet okay we got some what we think is blood spatter coming from her body
02:33towards the street and then some droplets going like down the sidewalk that way and at least twice
02:39once in the head and then it's in about anybody knows the victim in your family any it seemed like
02:44it nobody on scene yet I don't think robbery it doesn't look like they know it that far
02:49purse is good person staring tight goes all the way down to the curb you can follow droplets
02:59at this time your mind is just kind of racing internally I'm asking myself questions such as
03:05why was the victim there who witnessed this that I want to try to figure out immediately once I get
03:11on
03:11the scene how many gunshot wounds to share I can at least seven hand arm and then you had head
03:20and
03:21then you had some exits too bro okay hey Maurice they got a projectile over here okay it's a lady
03:31hearing that a male and a female were arguing prior to gunshots tells me that this person may have been
03:46close to the victim hey Jill I observed detective Herman to be speaking with two people behind a crime
03:53scene tape in New Orleans this is not that odd for a family to come to the crime scene I'm
03:59thinking
03:59that they may be related to the victim or know the identity of the victim tell them tell them what
04:05the person you're looking for tell me what it look like again short what's her name how do you know
04:11her family what's your relationship you family as well that's my girl that's your girlfriend okay
04:17the male begins to tell me that he believes the female is his cousin how did y'all come out
04:22here
04:22though my girl called me and told me she saw take out here uh-huh and I told her to
04:28come get me real
04:29fast so I could come out here and make sure everything was good after I left from what home she
04:34told me
04:34she was going home so you was with Kayla yeah at what time five twenty or five did you ask
04:41her like
04:41what made her think that's your cousin no I didn't it's New Orleans the male could not provide me any
04:48information about the female Kayla besides her name at this point my suspicions are heightened I think
04:54they're lying to me and I need to speak to them apart what made you think that this was your
05:00friend
05:00somebody told you did no did you know she was going to be in this area no sir so before
05:06you called
05:06your boyfriend did you call Kayla to see if it was Kayla no I didn't call Kayla I've been doing
05:11this a
05:11long time and I'm telling you something that's missing here you just understand that make sure
05:14it wasn't her how long you've been here I've been here for what a couple of minutes and not one
05:20time
05:20have you called Kayla to see if Kayla phone ring so if that is Kayla I'm gonna be like damn
05:26how was
05:28she such a psychic what you're telling me just don't make sense I'm be honest with you for the time
05:34being her and him are not free to leave they are being detained no phone calls or anything I want
05:40to
05:40verify if that's Kayla or not what's going on so guy and a girl come up they say that they
05:50think
05:50it's their cousin Kayla boyfriend goes to work them two split up Kayla and the other girl split up and
05:57she says she's leaving the store over there she see crime scene tape and automatically she thinks
06:01Kayla she said yeah so why would that be your first thought right she hasn't called Kayla she hasn't
06:10text Kayla anything of that nature so right now I have the officers detaining them but I wanted to
06:15see if we could verify if that's Kayla because if that's Kayla to me I got more questions I'm headed
06:20over to detective Stewart they're going through the purse right now we find an identification card what's
06:26the name on it they're going to the headquarters the victim is identified as Kayla Kelly this young
06:35female who's deceased could be a wife could be a sister there's value in her her life I'm an emotional
06:44person so I get attached to pretty much every case that I handle so when I'm interviewing someone I
06:49know has information about a case or about what happened I'm just gonna stick at it I think yeah she
06:55knows a piece they know something yeah they are definitely lying to me they definitely know more
07:01than what they're telling and we need to speak more at headquarters
07:13she's she's in there shivering saying she's cold on one okay
07:23what happened I told you the girl that was killed her name is Kayla did you and Kayla get into
07:31it tonight
07:33and who got into it with Kayla who shot Kayla seven times today is not my first day on the
07:40job
07:51I'm asking you because you involved just as much as in
07:58knowing that this female came to me and said that they believed that this was Kayla I was expecting some
08:05type of remorse but not receiving none everything that's taking place right now I just know that
08:11there's something missing yeah you say this girl Kayla was your cousin but you don't know her last name
08:25I really don't I put that on my shoulder so how did she end up at your house today was
08:30it like an hour
08:31before you went to work you left out to go to work I left out at work around four o
08:36'clock so I can see
08:37you we were sitting outside probably like an hour before you Kayla and your girlfriend y'all are walking
08:47to bring you to work correct what's your manager's name at work man knowing that the male and female
08:54were with the victim is interesting because we have some idea of a time frame of when the victim was
09:00last seen with anyone he's giving me the location of where he works the time that he was there
09:05I'm gonna speak with the manager and verify the time frame that he's giving me as to when he got
09:11to work and when he left work hey how you doing ma'am um this detective Walter Edmond with the
09:18New
09:18Orleans Police Department I was looking to speak to him let me see if someone could take your call
09:23just a second okay thank you for calling we'll be with you momentarily
09:36thank you for holding this is hey how you doing this uh detective Batman with the NOPD homicide
09:41division I'm speaking here with a employee of yours yes he worked for us okay he just told me that
09:48he
09:48was at work today and he had to leave I was just trying to see if I can verify a
09:51time that he came in
09:52in time he left out if possible yeah of course um he came in around 5 p.m and left
09:58probably 7 7 30
10:00he was just in the kitchen working okay and he said he had to leave at some point yeah he
10:06said that he
10:07had a family emergency and needed to leave when he told me he needed to leave it was very off
10:14-putting
10:15he had said something about his brother had shot his girlfriend
10:34it was a very strange I've never had anybody say that to me I was like uh if you're trying
10:40to get
10:40to work this is not the way to do it yeah it's just a very strange ordeal I wanted to
10:45make sure
10:46I brought that up uh appreciate it he didn't say anything the name of his brother but the when
10:51you showed me the contact on his phone it was Earl okay all right thank you so much thank you
11:00so just called right she says tells her dad um my brother just shot his girlfriend I need to
11:08leave I got a family emergency what the yeah and he shows her Earl in her phone and was like
11:17hey
11:17look he just called me her brother oh damn Fife I thought you was a detective no I didn't know
11:22Earl
11:24this is feeling very clearable suddenly yeah I'm about to find Earl right now Earl Michael Simmons
11:32this right here is Earl Simmons I should just start with her see how she react and just show him
11:38the
11:38picture just go in and just shock the yeah talking to someone who's lying to you it kind of motivates
11:46you
11:46to go harder this detective life okay so who's that who's that you're thinking about it too long I think
12:04was he at your house earlier
12:11okay and what happened between him and Kayla this is a point where you sit here and say to myself
12:17let
12:18me be honest because what I need to hide for were you involved in this if you weren't involved in
12:23this
12:23why are you so afraid to speak the truth did anybody hurt my dogs please you asking us about
12:31some dogs and I'm talking about a girl that's dead on the ground yeah you know what you know what's
12:39crazy you think killer parents right now who don't know that their daughter is dead think that means
12:45something to them you think your mom would be caring about dogs right now if it was you
12:50look at how heartless you sound right now come on Kayla means something to somebody too when
12:54detective Evans put the picture down you were silent for about 30 seconds and took deep breaths
13:03all right we here man who was that why are you showing me the picture because Kayla's dead on the
13:11ground that's why I'm showing you this picture who's dealing around Kayla was killed yeah I know that
13:16I printed this picture for a reason who is that what made you come over okay answer my question who
13:23is that I don't know I don't know y'all with all of it but I'm gonna figure it out
13:26tonight there's no
13:28need for us to each other there's no need for you to ask a million questions and say a million
13:32things I need you a simple question okay stop that's some hardly dude you care more about some dogs
13:56then she's just deflecting yeah did she say what happened I was like how is he relevant to this
14:03she's like it's older brother
14:08so the male and female I'm not getting much more from them with the interview so at this point I'm
14:15going to release both of them they'll be free to leave they're not under arrest
14:20I'm thinking Earl could be the shooter so I kind of want to verify if Earl Simmons and the victim
14:27is
14:27Kelly knew each other seeing if there's video surveillance or if there's some connection there
14:33to link all of this together so we don't need to get the video from the peace place what if
14:38all four
14:38of them really did walk him we need to get him on video with her how about you go swing
14:43over there
14:43by the house see if any cameras nearby we work for the people who work for the community so accepting
14:50that case and then trying to find a perpetrator for the purpose of the family having some type of
14:56relief after losing their loved one is why we do this have an address on a mom possibly so we'll
15:04drive
15:04to the east and see if I can make notification with the mom so yeah every situation is different
15:15sometimes the coroner's office may be on homicide scene and they may tell the family but as the lead
15:21detective I do feel obligated that the family is notified I kind of hate that feeling of like if I
15:28was a parent not knowing like you know a whole night and yeah a night a day and then tomorrow
15:33Sunday so they probably wouldn't yeah good Monday so yeah that's uh appreciate the help man it's a good
15:39yeah
16:07hey how you doing Mr. Kelly
16:09yes I'm aware that you have been informed by the coroner's office already of what occurred
16:15yes but first and foremost let me offer my uh condolence to you and your loss to you and your
16:21family thank you um I don't know much about Kayla like I couldn't find much about her I know it
16:27was
16:27she were y'all from here yes and she was a beautician she went to school for it she got
16:35a diploma and
16:36she had already been doing makeup work she was working in the French corner making her faces
16:45when you do come down we'll meet in person and we'll go over the whole case okay thank you very
16:49much
16:53I personally care about Eric Gates
16:56policing is somewhat of a game it's like cat and mouse but I'm pretty good at figuring things out
17:03so the person who committed the shooting in their mind they thought or believed that they would get
17:09away with it and here we are in the middle like nah not so quick
17:18so
17:19you
17:19you
17:19you
17:20you
17:20you
17:45It was a pretty bad scene.
17:48People in the area have been saying that a male and a female were arguing before they heard the gunshots.
17:53When Rob done seen the victim, Kayla, was on the ground.
17:57She had been shot multiple times, shot in the head, it appeared like there were some casings right next to
18:04her body.
18:06I don't know what type of argument makes you shoot somebody, but...
18:09They don't find a logical thing, they're not a logical thing in people.
18:13And now we're about to go do a canvas, we're gonna knock on a couple more doors.
18:16The night of, we knocked on a few doors.
18:18We'll see if we can get any more video and also anybody that may have heard anything.
18:23They got a lot of cameras in there?
18:25I know of at least two.
18:27Knocking on doors is very tedious, but getting surveillance footage, it gives you a direction where the victim and perpetrator
18:35may have came from.
18:36That information is crucial in your investigation.
18:39If I can place Earl at the scene, I can write an arrest warrant.
18:43We can just document anywhere they might have cameras.
18:47Right up there by that tree is where we found her body.
18:51What time it happened?
18:53Saturday, about 6 p.m.
18:56See if we can get anybody that might have heard anything that night that we didn't get a chance to
19:00talk to.
19:01All right, that's cool.
19:05Canva for Walt.
19:06Time is 3.58 p.m.
19:09No answer.
19:10Ring camera at location.
19:13Sometimes when you go out, you knock on the door.
19:15Someone may have an attitude with you or they may slam the door in your face.
19:19But I have to do this.
19:20I need to be doing this because I never know what I'm gonna get from it.
19:24Hey, how you doing?
19:25You live here?
19:26It's a gold one, too.
19:28You look like a po-po.
19:32Sir, are you the po-po?
19:33Yes, ma'am.
19:34Just one po-do.
19:38No homicide could be solved solely off of a detective's investigation.
19:43There has to be some level of cooperation from the citizens within the city.
19:47This does not work without the community.
19:49I'm curious to know, like, if you could hear them, what was going on with the female.
19:54Yeah, it wasn't you.
19:55What they normally do is subpoena the camera so you can see it.
19:59Yeah, yeah, yeah.
20:00It's under, like, your e-mail address or something?
20:02Yeah.
20:03What that would be?
20:05Yeah, camera's at 26 .
20:08It's a surveillance camera.
20:10Hi, I'm Detective Davis.
20:12Somebody was shot and killed out here on Saturday evening.
20:16We just knocked her on our door to see if anybody heard anything or saw anything.
20:20All she said was that she thanked her with a couple fighting.
20:23Gotcha.
20:24I appreciate you.
20:25She wasn't home when it happened.
20:26The neighbor texted her when it happened and asked if she was okay.
20:30And then throughout the conversation told her that she heard a couple fighting.
20:33Oh, okay.
20:35At least if he did come down this way, I can catch him coming this way.
20:39Uh-huh.
20:39I know we got an RTC camera down that way.
20:46But, as of right now, we good.
21:03So, you got me out here.
21:04What we got, man?
21:05Caught a case last night.
21:07We got RTCC video that shows a homeless man.
21:12The younger fellow, black male, dreadlocks, approaches him on foot.
21:17They have a conversation about something.
21:20The perpetrator goes to walk away, walks about a half a block away,
21:24and then, for whatever reason, turns back around.
21:28Walks back up to the victim, shoots him three times on the corner,
21:31and runs back the same direction he was walking away from the first time.
21:35Oh, God.
21:38When I spoke to Mr. Matthew's family,
21:40they said that the victim, Mr. Eddie, he was a mechanic.
21:44He liked to work on cars.
21:46After his wife died, he kind of took a downturn
21:49as far as taking care of himself and wanting to live on the street.
21:54Mr. Eddie never messed with anybody.
21:56I don't think that anybody can ever justify why this had to take place.
22:05Probably gonna be from the area.
22:07Um, you know, people around here usually stay around here, so...
22:11Well, you know how to just go.
22:13Start off with nothing, hopefully turn into something.
22:15Right.
22:16This investigation has its challenges from the start.
22:20I don't have a lot of evidence to go off of.
22:23The only thing I have right now is three spent shell casings
22:27and the video footage, but the viewpoint is a little far away
22:32to really see facial features.
22:35That camera faces this way.
22:37Okay.
22:38So we need to go that way and see if he goes...
22:41Continues down South Liberty or if he turns off somewhere.
22:44Okay, that makes sense.
22:45All right.
22:45All right, so I guess we'll start down here.
22:46I see RTCC flashing, but that's kind of far down.
22:49I guess we'll probably get this corner first.
22:53There wasn't a whole lot to go off on this case.
22:55It was gonna rely heavily on information from the neighborhood
22:59and from surveillance cameras to track where the perpetrator fled to.
23:04Any cameras on this side or anything or just...
23:07No, there's nothing on that side.
23:10We got the store that's got cameras.
23:12Okay.
23:12So he crosses over.
23:14They go behind this fence for a little bit,
23:16and you can't, because of where the camera's at,
23:18you can't really see what they're doing over here.
23:20Right.
23:21Shoots him three times.
23:22Which way he went after that?
23:24He went back that way, the same way he walked before.
23:26Same way he came?
23:26Oh, wow.
23:40I got this video.
23:41I got two different angles.
23:44One shot is from RTCC,
23:46and I got a store camera,
23:50which actually captures the shooting.
23:53Really?
23:53Does it look like that, brother?
23:55I'm gonna show you.
23:56Okay.
23:57So that's my victim here.
24:00You're gonna get a male.
24:01It's gonna come right here.
24:02He's gonna walk in front of the camera, which is great,
24:04because it's a clear shot of his face.
24:06Oh, yeah.
24:07Oh, that's him, yeah.
24:18So I looked at when he previously got arrested, same hairstyle,
24:23also have, like, all of his social media, and...
24:28Yeah.
24:29Yeah.
24:29Look at that gap.
24:30That's, like...
24:31Yeah.
24:31Pretty clear-cut tension.
24:32As you watch it, you can see, like, they're talking to each other.
24:35Mm-hmm.
24:36The hands gesture, you're gonna see...
24:38Yep.
24:38Yelling across the street, did you say?
24:40And another angle of the video is gonna show he crosses back over the street to walk with her.
24:45Okay.
24:45And it kind of, timeline-wise, the video I have of the story catches back up.
24:50You can see it's my victim.
24:52She has, like, a white cap on her head.
24:54Mm-hmm.
24:54It's the male she's walking with.
24:56I subpoenaed the ring camera footage from the canvas.
24:59The footage shows Earl and Kayla arguing on the street before the murder happens.
25:12So if you look up here by this tree and, like, this pole, like, where the mouse is at,
25:16you're gonna see the gunfire.
25:17It should be coming up soon.
25:20There you go.
25:21It's gonna flash there.
25:22It's gonna be another one.
25:23Did you see it?
25:24Yeah.
25:25Can you rewind it?
25:26Yep.
25:26Sure can for you.
25:29Knowing that I have a clear picture of Earl committing the shooting,
25:34it's exciting because now I can make a good case to present to a jury.
25:39I'm gonna obtain an arrest warrant for Earl Simmons for a second-degree murder.
25:44Trying to tie up a couple of loose ends, but definitely, I mean,
25:46I'll probably do the warrant today.
25:49Good job, Detective Edward.
25:50Good job.
25:51It's a good start.
26:11Right now, I am waiting for Mr. Earl Simmons to be apprehended by our warrant squad, which hopefully happens soon.
26:23So we just got a NIBIN chart back, which is a ballistic chart of the shell casings that were recovered
26:30from the scene.
26:31And it looks like my shooting is related to another homicide that occurred the same night, which I believe is
26:41Deesburg's case.
26:43Our ballistics matched from both of the shootings.
26:47So it's very likely that we may be dealing with the same suspect.
26:51I'm realizing that Earl Simmons possibly committed two homicides.
26:56In a matter of, like, four to five hours on the same night, I was shot.
27:08Hello?
27:09Hey, James.
27:09What's up, Walt?
27:10We got a report from Sergeant Barrera saying, hey, you and James' case, the same gun was used in both
27:15shootings.
27:16So our cases match.
27:17I'm on my way to the station now.
27:19We'll sit down and go over the video and then see if they're wearing the same thing, it's the same
27:22dude.
27:23I appreciate it, man.
27:27I get the report.
27:29It shows that the spint casings are a match, the same gun was used in both shootings.
27:35Our shootings happened like four hours apart from each other?
27:38Yeah.
27:38You have, have you looked at my, um, Volo?
27:42Nah, let me pull it up.
27:44Hold on.
27:46Yeah, that one.
27:47Oh.
27:49All right, yeah, that's, that's Earl.
27:51That's the same suspect.
27:54That's the same shirt he was wearing when he did my shooting.
27:57Do you have video on yours?
27:58I have a better frontal video.
28:00It looks like the shirt says, like, Wilts or something on it.
28:03Yeah.
28:03Like, in big white lettering.
28:04That's gonna be the same?
28:06Oh, yeah, definitely gonna be Earl.
28:08The hairstyle, the shirt, that's the same clothing he was wearing, the same shoes.
28:13I mean, it's four hours apart from each other.
28:16Less than a mile from mine, probably.
28:18Yeah.
28:18His brother actually lives right around the corner.
28:21A connection like this is almost unheard of, especially in the timeframe that they occurred,
28:28both homicides being relatively close to each other and the matching clothing.
28:32It's rare.
28:34That's cool.
28:35So you'll get a warrant from him for your case?
28:37Yeah, I'm gonna go, you have RTCC video or stuff uploaded?
28:40Yeah.
28:41All right.
28:41I'm gonna go look at that.
28:42And, uh, cause I was, I was back at ground zero after the initial investigation of mine.
28:48I was trying to figure out, like, why this happened to this homeless dude.
28:53So there's no motive right now?
28:54None.
28:55Yeah.
28:55They, like, meet up and then he walks off and for some reason he walks back and, and
28:59shoots the guy and all cool calm and...
29:02Yeah.
29:03But...
29:03You killed two people in four hours.
29:05Four hours.
29:06That's wild.
29:08All right, I'm gonna look up your stuff.
29:10Your, the RTCC video?
29:11Yeah.
29:12I'll go from there.
29:13All right.
29:13Good luck, man.
29:14All right.
29:15There's no clear motive behind both shootings.
29:18It's kind of cold.
29:20He appears to be just killing people for no reason.
29:24So a mile away from each other, four hours apart.
29:29This is Walt's video footage.
29:32And then this is my video footage.
29:34Oh, yeah, dude.
29:36That's the same shirt.
29:37Same shoes.
29:38Same hair.
29:41That's great.
29:42This is him right here.
29:44Yeah.
29:44Same dude.
29:45Same gun.
29:46Same everything.
29:47This is definitely breathe new life into my investigation.
29:50It's arrest warrant time.
29:52Try to find this guy as quick as we can.
30:25And then he's in the interview room at, uh, at our office waiting for myself to get out of the
30:34house.
30:35And he's in the interview room.
30:36Speak about both cases.
30:38And if he decides to talk, we're gonna at least try.
30:43Pretty excited that we have him in custody right now.
30:46He allegedly killed two people within four hours.
30:50I mean, little to no remorse within him.
31:04You got the search warrant signed?
31:06Yeah.
31:06We're looking for the shirt, the shoes.
31:09Pants.
31:10He's got, like, the white stripe on the sign.
31:12Yeah.
31:13Pants.
31:13The gun, obviously.
31:15Yeah.
31:15Y'all ready?
31:16Yeah.
31:16We go in.
31:17Yeah, let's do it.
31:18All right.
31:19So, right now, we're hoping that we find a murder weapon.
31:22Due to the fact it was used in two separate homicides, it would be crucial to match the evidence from
31:27the scene.
31:29When we first walk into the house, it is not well kept.
31:34Back of the house looked like a giant dog pen.
31:38It was bad living conditions for a human or a pet.
31:44He's gonna stick with me.
31:46I think, honestly, I think the black woman got out of it wrong.
31:50Or, I'm gonna ask, I'm gonna ask you for going back to check if you need to help.
31:56Being the lead detective, you want to make sure that you looked everywhere.
31:59I'll go over maybe a place someone else looked, or vice versa, Deesburger may go over somewhere I looked.
32:06It makes it easier having myself and other detectives helping.
32:21We find a live round on the bed, which is the same make and caliber as the murder weapon.
32:26But, right now, we just need to find a gun.
32:33Not feeling the best that we're gonna find a weapon.
32:36It may be hitting really good, or it may not be there.
32:45Could be. Could be.
32:47Yeah, we got it.
32:49Deesburg shows me the shoe that he found in the closet, which has the 9mm gun inside of it.
32:56From that, he just kind of explains to me how deep it was tucked inside the closet with the clothing
33:00on top of it.
33:03This could be the murder weapon of the two homicides.
33:09That's it.
33:10Yeah, I heard.
33:12I put a shoe on the floor in the closet.
33:15It was tucked in a shoe.
33:17Right.
33:18In the back corner of a closet that was filled with junk.
33:21Man.
33:22Well, that's why we don't come one person by themselves, you break a team.
33:25Such a good catch, man.
33:26Excellent find.
33:29It's a proud moment, finding a gun, and hopefully that firearm matches the ballistic evidence that we have, which would
33:36put a bow on this case.
33:55Detector!
33:58Detector!
34:05What's up, Mr. Simmons?
34:07I'm Detective Edmund.
34:09Detective Edmund.
34:09Detector Eastberg.
34:10We both want the homicide division.
34:13All right.
34:13Right now you are under arrest for two homicide charges.
34:17How am I under arrest for two homicide charges?
34:19Well, we can't explain everything to you, but prior to doing so, I'm advising your rights for Miranda, okay?
34:24I'm looking to obtain a confession from Earl.
34:27In this particular investigation, we have two shootings
34:29where we clearly don't have a motive yet.
34:31I hope that he acknowledged what he did to inform the family,
34:35to let them know why this happened.
34:54You got that.
34:55What?
34:56The gun.
34:57Stuff in the shoe in the closet.
34:59Yeah, the Smith & Wesson.
35:00Yeah, we got it.
35:01This is not mine.
35:02Okay, but look, also, I forgot to tell him.
35:05You think she know everything, but she don't, bro.
35:08He got a camera.
35:09You know a lot more.
35:09That's not like that.
35:11You know how clear cameras are these days?
35:13Bro, that's not like that.
35:14We thought that it was you on both shootings.
35:16You're not trying to connect me to two.
35:17No, you are connected.
35:18It's not trying.
35:19I need to go back out there and figure that out.
35:21Oh, clean it out.
35:22You want me to show you a bitch of you?
35:24Yeah, please do.
35:25It's going to be funny.
35:26Please do.
35:27I decided to print out a picture, a still shot from the surveillance footage of him.
35:33It clearly shows his face and what he's wearing.
35:36We have the evidence to prove that he did this.
35:40Tell me that's not you.
35:42You can't.
35:43You can't tell me that's not you.
35:45What does that have to do with any type of murder scene?
35:47Is that you?
35:48What does that have to do with any type of murder scene?
35:50Is it you?
35:51You answered my question.
35:52No, it's not.
35:52Okay, who is that?
35:53Your twin?
35:54What did you talk about before you killed him?
35:56I didn't know that's a .
35:57Number one, I didn't kill that girl.
35:59No matter what you tell me, I know I let you put that in my mind.
36:02Okay.
36:02Number two, what the is I got on?
36:06I don't know.
36:07You dress yourself.
36:08You're doing the exact same thing as you are in that picture.
36:10So look, Detective Diesburgen is also working a shooting.
36:13He can inform me about his shooting.
36:15So I'm working on an investigation later on that night at MLK in South Liberty.
36:22They've had a storm.
36:23Yeah.
36:23You know what I'm talking about?
36:24Some guy got killed on the sidewalk.
36:26I more or less want to know why you killed homeless, dude.
36:28Are you serious?
36:29Our homeless man?
36:30Yeah.
36:31Yeah.
36:31You're trying to figure it out, too.
36:32You explain to us.
36:33So what's his name?
36:34And then you ran, right?
36:35It looks like your mother's house.
36:37I don't even know what y'all are talking about.
36:39Y'all coming and meeting with y'all.
36:41So I'm asking questions just like y'all asking questions.
36:43It's not going to look great when they're done this test fire and the cases come back and
36:47it's in the house with you.
36:48That's not my game.
36:49And I know your brother wasn't there because I already got video from him at work.
36:52I guarantee you.
36:53You're going to find out, brother.
36:55You have anything else from me?
36:55You're going to find out.
36:56All right.
36:57Let's see.
36:57All right.
36:58Well, thank you.
37:00Yeah, I'll go find out.
37:02Man, tell him to shove it to my cell.
37:04Did anybody hit me with this ?
37:07We're all right, man.
37:08Anybody do this to me, man?
37:10It got issued yesterday by the court.
37:11He was supposed to go to court, but he didn't go.
37:14Mr. Simmons.
37:20Yeah.
37:21Mr. Simmons.
37:23Mr. Simmons.
37:23All this, man.
37:24Y'all been lying, man.
37:25Y'all got me in here talking about y'all just going to talk.
37:27Y'all going to question me.
37:28Y'all charging me with some .
37:29All right.
37:30We're going to move this handcuff to the back.
37:32I'm going to get hired or something, honey.
37:33All right.
37:34Sarge, talking about y'all got something.
37:35You ain't got nothing on me, man.
37:37That's crazy.
37:39He picked up the table and tossed it around.
37:41So we're going to move his handcuffs to the back.
37:44We're going to get him transported.
37:45I could have just stayed if I really felt like that.
37:48Hey, man.
37:49Let's try to relax for one second.
37:51Relax?
37:51What you mean?
37:52Relax.
37:52Come on, turn up.
37:54Man, come on, man.
37:55Take these cups off.
37:55Come on, man.
37:56Y'all got me on a homicide for what?
37:58I ain't even do this .
38:01I'm telling you, I ain't doing your gun now listening, man.
38:03This is what we're saying.
38:04This ain't going to take care of it.
38:06No.
38:07Do it the right way, bro.
38:08Don't do that.
38:09Don't flash out of here like that.
38:10Don't do something right there.
38:11That ain't going to help you.
38:12You see what I'm saying?
38:14Man, this is crazy, bro.
38:16Come on.
38:18Mr. Simmons realized that he was on the hook for both of these murders,
38:22and I think that obviously upset him.
38:25Man.
38:27Come on.
38:28Let's go.
38:28You understand what evidence?
38:29So we have evidence to support your arrest.
38:32You don't know the whole story.
38:33You're the one that has parts of the story.
38:34It's up to you.
38:35Evidence to support my arrest?
38:37Evidence.
38:38Earl Simmons was kind of on a rampage and allegedly a very violent person.
38:44So our homicide unit, we were excited to know that we got this person off the street.
38:48He even acknowledged that it was his girlfriend.
38:50Yeah, dude.
38:51Yeah.
38:51I don't know why he killed Beesburg's guy.
38:53He's really random, but it's like, I mean, you got a four-hour window, same area, general area.
38:57Yeah.
38:58What if you do?
38:58Yeah.
38:58Two blocks away.
38:59Good deal, man.
39:18Right now, Earl is in jail.
39:21He's booked on two counts of second-degree murder.
39:25And right now, we're just waiting for the court process to begin.
39:29Kayla's dad has just made it into town.
39:32I'm going to go and speak with him, inform him about the case, and kind of go from there.
39:41How you doing, gentlemen?
39:42How are you?
39:42Mr. Kelly.
39:43Yeah?
39:43Fine.
39:44Good with my seat.
39:45Yeah, you're good, sir.
39:47All right.
39:49So we'll say you'll land on everything kind of going on and everything about Kayla's case right now, all right?
39:56Okay.
39:56So yesterday, we made an arrest.
39:59The gentleman that we arrested was Earl Simmons.
40:01Yes.
40:04Things that I do know about the case is that Kayla and Earl were walking.
40:09We spoke to witnesses who stated that they heard arguing.
40:13Yes.
40:13And then they heard gunshots.
40:15Mm-hmm.
40:18After the shooting, he walked away.
40:20Mm-hmm.
40:21And we later learned he actually committed another homicide about four hours after the shooting with Kayla.
40:31We searched the house that he was in yesterday.
40:33We got a confirmation that today that the weapon that we found in his house was linked to the shooting.
40:39Both?
40:40Both shootings.
40:41My goodness.
40:42So it is the murder weapon.
40:43So we do have that as well.
40:45Every homicide detective wants to solve the case.
40:49It is great to give that news to the victim's family, but it's also great to just get a murderer
40:53off the street.
40:54We did interview Earl yesterday as well.
40:57Mm-hmm.
40:58He acknowledged that he knew Kayla, but he wouldn't give a reason as to why the shooting.
41:02But his gun wraps him up with it.
41:03The gun is linked to the shooting.
41:05That's correct.
41:06The gun that we got out of his house.
41:07Yes.
41:07So we may never know exactly why this occurred, but at least we can have some type of closure
41:14to know that the person who is responsible for this is where he needs to be.
41:18And I've heard how long it takes some time to have a case closed.
41:22This was quick.
41:23Honestly, for us, this can't happen without the work of the community.
41:26Right.
41:27So even if it's, like, small information.
41:30Mm-hmm.
41:30So I'm glad, even though you used to work here, you were a police officer here, correct?
41:36Right.
41:36So it's good to know that the community was able to help.
41:39Yeah.
41:40I think with Mr. Kelly's history of working with the police department and seeing that there
41:45were so many cases that probably went unsolved, now that he lives out of the state, he's
41:49able to come back and feel like it's even better.
41:52And I think the city of New Orleans is constantly growing to be a better place.
41:55I'm so glad that I got guys like yourself and others in there to be able to handle this
42:00the way y'all handle it.
42:02That morning, I said, they're going to call us.
42:03Yeah.
42:04That's crazy.
42:05And you called.
42:06Keep up the good work.
42:07Really?
42:08Thank you so much.
42:09I appreciate it.
42:22I feel the justice for Eddie Matthews and Miss Kayla came through the collaboration
42:28between myself and Detective Edmund.
42:31This is a good example of seeing a homicide investigation to the end and giving the family
42:37the answers that they deserve and that they need for closure.
42:41I personally enjoy my job and what I do.
42:45What's up?
42:46What's up?
42:46What's up, babe?
42:47I'm from the community of the city of New Orleans.
42:50I want it to be better.
42:51I want it to be great.
42:52I think everybody else around us want the same thing.
42:55If we just keep fighting the good fight at some point, the good outweigh the bad.
43:00I want it to be good.
43:11I want it to be good.
43:11You
