00:04Today, I want to talk with you about a subject
00:06that many people have been talking about for a very long time.
00:10And that subject is called success.
00:13You see, success means different things to different people.
00:17And what success might mean to me
00:19is different than what it may mean to you.
00:22And what it may mean to you
00:23is different than what it means to a kindergartner
00:26who's just trying to get a star on his homework assignment.
00:30Or perhaps to a housewife
00:32who's been trying to get her five kids in bed by 9 o'clock p.m.
00:37Or maybe even a corporate executive
00:39who's been working for his or her corporation for 20-plus years
00:44and only wants to become the CEO of their organization.
00:50As you can tell, we have so many different definitions
00:53of this word success.
00:55But the greatest definition I can give you today is this.
01:01Success is all about self-expression.
01:04It's about being who you want to be.
01:07Doing what you want to do.
01:09Going where you want to go.
01:11Because when it comes to your life,
01:13you are the boss.
01:16And you have a choice.
01:18In fact, you are who you are today
01:20because of all the choices that you've made in your whole entire life.
01:27But you know, as we're growing up, we have a lot of people
01:29who try to tell us how to make these choices.
01:32Our parents, our teachers, our bosses, our friends, even our neighbors.
01:37They try to tell us how to live our lives, what we should do, where we should go,
01:42how we should walk, how we should talk.
01:45But my question for you is this.
01:48If you're trying to be what other people want you to be, then who will be you?
01:55So the key to success is to stop conforming to other people's expectations
02:01and start performing to your own level of expectations.
02:04It's to believe in yourself.
02:06It's to know that what you want will eventually come to fruition
02:10as long as you believe it.
02:12You see, you have to have faith.
02:14And faith is knowing that what you want will eventually come to fruition
02:18as long as you believe it.
02:20And if you feed your faith,
02:22you'll find oftentimes that your fears will starve to death.
02:26Because if you believe in yourself,
02:29everyone else in the world will believe in you.
02:34Fortunately, for a long time, I didn't quite believe in myself.
02:38Actually, I used to be the kind of person that mothers would often warn their daughters about.
02:43And fathers would tell their sons,
02:45if you keep doing what Daniel Alley's doing,
02:48you're going to end up where Daniel Alley's going.
02:51Now they had some credence to what they were saying,
02:53because as you can imagine, your reputation really is your best advertisement.
02:58I really didn't have a good reputation,
03:00because I was living so far below my potential,
03:03that I was actually living in my mother's basement.
03:08By the age of 21, I had worked over 40 different jobs.
03:12I got fired from more jobs than more people had.
03:15In high school, I graduated second to last.
03:19The last guy?
03:20Well, he was in jail.
03:22I was on drugs for eight years, and I was confused.
03:26I was broke, busted, and disgusted.
03:28And I knew that I wanted to change.
03:31The only problem was that I didn't know how.
03:36Can I see a show of hands if you've ever been in a situation
03:39where you wanted to change, but you just didn't know what to do?
03:45Well, we all have been there.
03:46And maybe we're there right now.
03:48Well, I discovered that there are only three ways that I can make change in my life.
03:52Three ideas I wanted to share with you today
03:54that can absolutely revolutionize your life from today.
03:59I know these tips work because I've been able to do it myself.
04:03By the age of 24, I became a self-made millionaire.
04:06I've been able to write three books and travel to dozens of countries.
04:10I now reach millions of people with my work.
04:13I believe that these three key principles can change your life,
04:17no matter how you define success.
04:19Whether you want to live to age 100, or even have a dozen kids,
04:22or just have a little house in a mountaintop somewhere no one knows about.
04:27These three key principles will help you to realize the success in your life.
04:33The first one is to read more books.
04:36You know, all the books in the world can help us to solve all the problems in the world.
04:42But the truth is that we don't have to read all the books in the world
04:45because we don't have all the problems in the world.
04:49But we do have to read the books that help us to solve our problems.
04:53So for instance, if you wanted to learn about money,
04:55you better be learning, reading books that talk about money.
04:59Or if you wanted to learn how to manage your relationships
05:02or to become a better communicator, there's a lot of books on that.
05:06What I'm saying basically is that our libraries are paved with gold,
05:11and library cards are free.
05:13You see, books are the tools that release the heavens of your mind.
05:19And leaders are readers.
05:20You see, if you want to succeed, you have to read.
05:24Most people in the world read about one book every single year.
05:28That book, I would suppose, would be Facebook.
05:32And before people even get up and, you know, do their thing,
05:35before they drink their coffee or read their paper, they read Facebook.
05:39But the truth is that if you study miscellaneous things,
05:43you get miscellaneous results.
05:45You become what you study.
05:47What do you study?
05:48And where is it taking you?
05:50You see, a lot of people come up to me and they say,
05:52well, Daniel, I don't really have time to read.
05:55I have kids, I have work, I'm a student,
05:58I already have so many textbooks, I'm doing so many things, I'm too busy.
06:03But if you don't have ten minutes a day,
06:05you're basically saying you don't have a life.
06:07We all have time to read.
06:09We all have time to pick up a good book
06:11and read for ourselves so that we can learn.
06:13Look, if you read ten minutes a day for 30 straight days,
06:17that's one book a month.
06:19One book a month in 12 months is 12 books a year.
06:22You can do in one year what most people do in five years.
06:26Talk about not having time.
06:28We all have time to read.
06:31Remember, readers are leaders.
06:32And the only way you can succeed is if you read.
06:37My second suggestion is about getting around the best individuals you can.
06:42You see, we're the sum total of the five people
06:44in which we surround ourselves with the most.
06:47We earn the same income.
06:48We go the same places.
06:50We do the same things.
06:51We think the same thoughts.
06:52And if you were to look at your five closest friends,
06:55you've got to ask yourself this one question.
06:58Who are my leaders and where are they taking me?
07:03In other words, are my leaders taking me to the place
07:06that I would most likely want to be?
07:09You see, if the answer is no, then you need new leaders.
07:13You need people who are inspiring,
07:15people that can help you, lift you up to the goals
07:17that transcend your own possibility and your thinking.
07:22You have to realize their goals,
07:23and you can only do that by getting around the right people.
07:27Now, many of us have what I like to call default friends.
07:30And default friends are basically people
07:32that we see around the neighborhood.
07:35People at the grocery store, the gym, the mall,
07:39at church, at work, everywhere we go.
07:41These are people that we naturally befriend
07:43as we start to gain their trust and acceptance.
07:46And what tends to happen is that if you're a highly ambitious person
07:50and you have really high goals,
07:53a lot of these people can't help you reach your goals.
07:56So you have to look outside.
07:58You have to search for people.
08:00I'll give you an example.
08:01I had a friend, his name was John, and he was actually a plumber.
08:04And his father and him had a pretty successful business.
08:07At least it seemed like it.
08:09So I asked John, you know, I want to start a business.
08:12What exactly do you think I should do?
08:14John pulled me to the corner and he said,
08:16Daniel, I don't think you want to start a business.
08:19Ninety-eight percent of businesses fail within the first three years.
08:24Then he proceeded to tell me about all the reasons why I couldn't do it
08:27and why it won't work.
08:29He told me how it was so hard working over 100 hours a week,
08:33how hard it was to manage payroll,
08:35and why the recession was holding him back from getting more clients.
08:40As he told me this, I became a little discouraged, a little dejected.
08:44And I went home and I thought about it.
08:46When I got to my journal, I usually reflect,
08:49and I wrote down in my journal that 98 percent of statistics are made up,
08:54including that one.
08:57You see, you have to realize that no one's opinion of you can become your reality.
09:05And in order to change your reality, you have to change your mentality
09:08and the people you surround yourself with.
09:11You have to get yourself around people who can help you,
09:14people that are smarter than you, people who have gone further than you,
09:17people that know exactly what you need to do to get to that next level.
09:21You see, the truth is that the people that you're looking for
09:24are also looking for you, but you have to find them.
09:28You see, sometimes we surround ourselves with strangers and family members
09:32who tell us what we can't do. They limit us.
09:35And a lot of people have the right intentions,
09:38but oftentimes they provide the wrong directions.
09:42In other words, they want to help us, but they just don't know how.
09:45So get yourself around people who can.
09:47A lot of people ask me, well, Daniel, how do you find these people?
09:50It's easy.
09:52If you follow step one, which is to read more books,
09:54you'll find that in the back of the book,
09:56there's the About the Author section.
09:58And what I used to do is I used to reach out to the authors.
10:02Thankfully, we live in a new millennium,
10:04which allows us to get on their social media, their websites,
10:07and so we can have a conversation with them.
10:09We can change by actually understanding what it is that they teach.
10:14And if we ask enough questions, we can make great progress in our life.
10:18Remember, the people you're looking for are also looking for you.
10:21So get yourself around those people.
10:24My last and final suggestion is to set higher goals.
10:28Because goals make you stretch.
10:30They help you to become more of who you are.
10:32And in this enormity of conformity,
10:34so many people don't know how to set goals.
10:37They get confused about the process.
10:40A lot of people use New Year's resolutions.
10:43But the problem with New Year's resolutions
10:45is that a person often tries to do too much too fast.
10:50So let's say Doug wants to stop smoking.
10:52On a December 31st, he says, I'm done.
10:55January 1st, I'm clean.
10:57Never again.
10:58You see, he hasn't created a plan of action to achieve his goals.
11:02And therefore, it is unreasonable.
11:05Bucket list is something else that people do.
11:07And usually, when someone creates a bucket list,
11:10they're giving themselves too much time.
11:12There's no urgency.
11:13And most of the time, they don't write their goals down.
11:16So what do you suggest?
11:18Well, I'm glad you asked.
11:20What I do suggest is for you to write your goals down.
11:23I believe that a dull pencil is better than a sharp mind.
11:26And to impress your subconscious mind,
11:29you have to write your goals down
11:30so that you can hold it steadfastly to who you are.
11:34I have this method I teach all around the world.
11:36It's called the 20-idea method.
11:38And basically, what you do is you select one overarching goal
11:42that you would like to accomplish,
11:44and it lists 20 ideas that correspond with that particular goal.
11:48So let's say, for instance,
11:50you wanted to become a better public speaker.
11:52What are some things you can do?
11:54Well, you could watch TED Talks like you are right now.
11:57You could practice your speech.
11:59You can look in the mirror to challenge yourself.
12:01You could read the dictionary every day.
12:03There are so many things you can do.
12:05But could I come up with 20 ideas?
12:08The answer is yes, I can come up with 100 if I wanted to.
12:12Imagine if you did this in every area of your life,
12:16financially, for promotions, for your family,
12:18and you wrote your goals down every day.
12:21You'd be able to accomplish so many things in your life.
12:24You see, we have everything we need in order to succeed,
12:27but we have to take the things that we have
12:30to get more of the things that we want.
12:32From the cars that we drive, to the clothes that we wear,
12:35to the food that we eat,
12:36and the people that we meet.
12:38In this depository of diversity,
12:41we have everything we need in order to succeed.
12:45But we have to believe.
12:47You see, when you believe in yourself,
12:48you'll find that everyone else in the world will believe in you.
12:52And you also have to think big.
12:54When you think big, you'll do big, and you'll win big.
12:56Well, big is actually the three ideas I wanted to share with you today.
13:00B, the books that you read.
13:02I, the individuals you meet.
13:04And G, the goals that you set for yourself.
13:07Books, individuals, and goals.
13:09That's all you need to accomplish success.
13:11Because when you think big, you'll do big.
13:13And you will win big, my friends.
