00:03:21Going to have a battle for the lead here shortly as we take you to a radio remix of the
00:03:26challenges drivers have faced today.
00:03:36It's just loose up top.
00:03:37Like, I want to rip that outside and drive the hell out of it.
00:03:40But it just doesn't have the right rear to fire up there that it needs.
00:03:43So I'm struggling.
00:03:45I feel like we are definitely starting to race super loose.
00:03:48I have zero confidence with the back.
00:03:49So I'm just on top of the race room and I feel like I don't have a rear.
00:03:53Sorry. Oh, my God.
00:03:54Just so loose and so rough.
00:03:56It's obviously going to be in a bad aero spot and I just went out, so I'm sorry.
00:04:02That's been by Todd Gilliland is what took Christopher Bell, who was then the leader, out of the race.
00:04:08That was the first of six caution flags we've had today with now 75 to go.
00:04:13Didn't hear many guys saying, man, it feels great out here, did you?
00:04:17No.
00:04:21And that's just the nature of this racetrack.
00:04:23It's so fast, so bumpy, and it's just you're on the edge all the time in order to get everything
00:04:30out of the car.
00:04:31So long day for drivers.
00:04:34This race has played out.
00:04:35You've had track position at times, too.
00:04:38I mean, it's been all over the place.
00:04:41It's a moving target as far as hitting the balance on your race car in the track position game.
00:04:47Well, and now it's going to start getting the shadows into turn one.
00:04:50Once those shadows start creeping over the racetrack, that's when, see them right there on the entry to the corner.
00:04:56The rest of these shadows right here will start working themselves down the racetrack.
00:05:01And that's when the track starts going through another change and another step as that track temp starts to go
00:05:06down on one end of the track.
00:05:09Still 31 cars on the lead lap as you ride with fourth place Chris Buescher.
00:05:14And Elliott has now opened up eight-tenths of a second.
00:05:17Tyler Reddick caught him and then drifted back a bit from the race leader.
00:05:24With 72 to go, Regan.
00:05:26Well, Mike, you see the one car, Ross Chastain, having a nice day running in the ninth position right now.
00:05:31Been battling tight with that car for the majority of the day, but as they've been adjusting, it's been getting
00:05:35better.
00:05:36And talking to crew chief Brandon McSwain earlier this morning, they had to have some tough conversations after the Kansas
00:05:42race.
00:05:42Some big struggles for track house.
00:05:44But right now, things looking much better for that one car than they have on the mile-and-a-halves.
00:05:47And then right behind him, Kyle Busch continuing to be in the top ten today.
00:05:51When I talked to Andy Street this morning, he said,
00:05:53if we could be in the top 15, that would be a great day.
00:05:56It's been a great day so far from that standpoint.
00:05:58And keep in mind, Andy Street and Kyle worked together for the final five races of last year and had
00:06:03some success.
00:06:03That helps with making things work early on.
00:06:08And I couldn't agree more with Andy Street on a top 15 being a great day.
00:06:13As bad as this car has run to start the season, to come here, qualify well, and basically running the
00:06:19top ten all day.
00:06:20That's a huge improvement.
00:06:22This battle for fifth continues between Suarez and Bowman.
00:06:26These two Chevys fighting it out.
00:06:29End of this run, starting to see some attrition.
00:06:32Some tire fall off and give up.
00:06:34Some ill-handling race cars are starting to show.
00:06:39Yeah, the one thing I noticed about this run, Clint,
00:06:42it seems like the pace is a little bit faster than what it was at this point during the last
00:06:48run.
00:06:48Cars are a little more spread out.
00:06:50But I also think that when the sun gets on the back side of this grandstand over here,
00:06:55this racetrack starts to pick up.
00:06:59Larry, most of the leaders were on pit road with 106 laps to go in this race, 69 to go
00:07:05now.
00:07:06When would we expect them under green?
00:07:08Yeah, we're trying to run 95 laps to the checkered flag.
00:07:12Going to split it down the middle, Mike.
00:07:13Run about 47 to 48 laps a run.
00:07:16But remember Adam Stevens and Christopher Bell in stage one.
00:07:19This could be your last stop.
00:07:21I'm probably going to start looking at it somewhere between lap 210 and 215.
00:07:26Right along with Eric Jones.
00:07:28You guys heard at home a downshift in one and two.
00:07:31That is something for on a mile and a half track that really showcases the difference in the corners of
00:07:37both ends of this racetrack, Kevin.
00:07:39And at this point in the run, for sure, that time he did not downshift.
00:07:43But you have a lot of—oh, oh.
00:07:47He had his hands full right there in and out of the gas.
00:07:50So Eric Jones having to chase that car.
00:07:52But you've got options in turns one and two.
00:07:54You can downshift if your car is tight or if you just need the speed if the pace gets too
00:07:59slow.
00:07:59So definitely a couple choices of downshifting or not down there.
00:08:04We've had four of six caution flags coming for what started as single-car spins.
00:08:10But it seems like most of the big action today has been on pit road.
00:08:16And we've got at least one more pit stop to go.

00:11:37Yeah, at the beginning of this race, it didn't really start off thinking, man, this is going
00:11:41to be like a normal Texas race.
00:11:43And then the grenade went off and blew everything up.
00:11:47And, you know, this car right here, Chase Elliott, has been fast.
00:11:51As you see, Kyle Busch, I think, going past.
00:11:56Passing cars, huh?
00:11:57Yes, ninth place.

00:12:00Whoa!
00:12:01And you see Carson right there, very aware of that car inside of him.
00:12:05That thing got loose, and you saw him go up the racetrack.

00:12:11And that'll bring William Byron, the 11th place car, right to him.

00:12:18That right there is a great picture of what an aero-tight situation is.
00:12:23He drove to the bumper of that car and picked up a massive push, had to lift out of the
00:12:28gas.
00:12:28He just dumps all the downforce, all the air out from your race car.
00:12:33And what happens right there, when it goes through those choppy bumps on the other end of the racetrack in
00:12:37three and four.
00:12:38Pit, pit, pit.
00:12:40Here we go.
00:12:42But you'll hit those bumps, and that car will take off as we're going to watch William Byron get on
00:12:47the pit road right here.
00:12:48Good way, Mark.
00:12:50Second gear.

00:12:55So Byron pits from 11th place, as Ross Chastain is also in.
00:13:02So two of the top dozen cars begin the pit stop cycle here.
00:13:07And that'll put the pressure on him, just like we saw earlier in the race with Bell.
00:13:11Believe it or not, we were talking about Bell then, right?
00:13:15He pitted first and ended up being in the lead because of that situation.
00:13:21Yeah, and then we kind of saw most cars follow suit, and then we saw some cars run it long
00:13:27and put themselves in a spot to pass cars easier at the end of the run.
00:13:31Looking at Bush and Bowman on pit road, along with Austin Dillon.

00:13:41Scheduled green flag stops that they hope will take them all the way to the checker.
00:13:48Ross Chastain, too fast entering.
00:13:50And that's the type of stuff, when you get down to the end of these races, that you just can't
00:13:55afford to do.

00:13:56You can't overcome it.
00:13:57You have no time to overcome that.
00:13:59And Chastain was eighth when he entered pit road.

00:14:18Yeah, you see that nine car, that's a great point that Clint just made right there, was talking about how
00:14:22high up the racetrack that Chase Elliott is right now.
00:14:26We saw this earlier with Corey Heim, but as these tires get enough air in them, see him right at
00:14:31the top of the black, that they get enough air to go through that bump right there in turns three
00:14:35and four.
00:14:36So when the tires get enough air in and it keeps them from hitting the limiters and the ground, it
00:14:42keeps that car as much more stable through all the bumps.
00:14:44Zane Smith in and out, Shane Van Gisbergen in his pit, and Chastain did the penalty drive down pit road.
00:14:53Here comes Chris Buescher for what he hopes will be his final stop.

00:14:58Chris Buescher has been on the free side for most of the day, but he's been able to management.
00:15:02Never a top ten finish at his hometown track.

00:15:33He's been able to manage that right rear very nicely.

00:15:36Tyler Reddick in that 45, who's been losing all his time on entry, said I need to be just a
00:15:41tick tighter.
00:15:42It'll be four tires and fuel for the 45.
00:15:44All right, Denny Hamlin gives up the lead to come to pit road.

00:15:47So is John Hunter Nemechek and Josh Berry.
00:15:51As green flag stops continue, Regan.
00:15:55Well, the report from driver Denny Hamlin to crew chief Chris Gale this run, just a little bit too much
00:16:00on the tight side.
00:16:01Wants a little bit of help with that.
00:16:07So that will leave eight cars on the lead lap who have not yet made this green flag stop, as
00:16:14you see on the pylon.
00:16:18There you see Riley Herbst right there.
00:16:20Looked a little bit slow coming to pit road.
00:16:22Not quite as aggressive.

00:16:34Remember, this is just his second career starting up here at Texas.
00:16:38He hasn't said a whole lot.

00:16:43Pit stop by the guys.
00:16:45And Jamie, I like what you said right there.
00:16:47That rookie driver, be patient.

00:16:50Do not get too much and get caught speeding coming onto this pit road and beat ourselves.
00:16:54Take yourself out of this good run that we've got going.

00:17:00So now five cars have not yet made this stop.
00:17:03Josevar Blaney, Haim, Kozlowski, and Briscoe.
00:17:09And that's exactly the strategy that we saw earlier in the race.
00:17:12You either want to be on the front side of it or wait and have yourself an advantage
00:17:17so that you can get by the cars that you need to pass later in the run
00:17:22with fresher tires.
00:17:29And you see Ross Chastain right there.
00:17:31That pit road penalty put him all the way from a top ten running position all the way
00:17:35back to 30th.
00:17:36Two laps down.
00:17:38Two laps down.
00:17:39Hand out the window for Josevar.
00:17:40He's coming to pit road this time.
00:17:41Going to give up that lead.
00:17:47So Carson Hosevar will come down to Luke Lambert.
00:17:50No, they called him off.
00:17:51Yeah, he waved.
00:17:52Kept going.
00:17:53I don't know if they saw something on the track or something changed their minds there.
00:18:08Hosevar did this same exact strategy earlier in the race where they ran seven, eight, nine laps longer
00:18:14than what the original group of cars that came to pit road.
00:18:19Brad Kozlowski also did that early in the race, but he is on pit road now getting service.
00:18:24Yeah, and that strategy of them staying out at the end of the second stage, they got some
00:18:29points, but they're going to give all that back up with the finishing position.
00:18:33He didn't go very far when they dropped the green flag for stage three.
00:18:36Yeah, that was all early in the race.
00:18:38This is the end of the race.
00:18:39Even if they catch a caution, most of these guys, if you just made green flag stops, they're
00:18:43going to stay out.
00:18:46So Hosevar lapping at 30-20.
00:18:49That is almost a second slower.
00:18:51Here you can Denny Hamlin, some of the other quicker cars.
00:18:55He's in now.
00:18:56Blaney's going to stay one more, at least.
00:19:04And right now there's 13 cars on the lead lap, so it would be detrimental to those guys
00:19:11if the caution came out right now, which is kind of what they're hoping for.
00:19:16Or sometimes you get yourself where Blaney has run 13th, 14th, 15th, and all the trouble
00:19:21that you've had.
00:19:22But I think that's exactly why they're doing this strategy with only 13 cars in the lead
00:19:27lap.
00:19:28It is a little bit different scenario than it was earlier in the race.
00:19:30So that will leave Ryan Blaney, Corey Heim, and Chase Briscoe.
00:19:37Fuel-wise, they can go another 15 or 20 laps.
00:19:42And we've seen chaos happen at the end of this race.
00:19:46Looks like he's got his hand out the window.
00:19:49And he's just going to let him to the inside.
00:19:50Yeah, I think he's just pointing him by.
00:19:52And that's the difference in the fresher tires.
00:19:53And I think those guys like Hosomar that pitted late like that, they're hoping that with everything
00:19:59spread out, they don't lose as much track position as they would under caution, you know, having
00:20:05trouble on a pit stop or something.
00:20:07Now, if you pit, if you give up one or two spots more by staying out those few laps, now
00:20:12you have fresher tires.
00:20:13And you can try to take advantage of those as everybody wears their stuff out.
00:20:18But these three leaders are losing six or seven-tenths of a second every lap.
00:20:23To the cars that have stopped and taken on tires, the 13 cars in the lead lap is what's
00:20:28allowing them or they're hoping for a miracle.
00:20:31That's exactly right.

00:20:33We've seen the 12s day that they've had.
00:20:36They've been all over the place.
00:20:39Give luck a little bit of a chance to operate.
00:20:48So Hosomar has unlapped himself.

00:20:52And look at the difference in speed between Chase Elliott and leader Ryan Blaney.
00:20:58Yeah, right at five miles an hour average per lap.

00:21:03And when you look at Blaney, I mean, they're hoping for that strategy.

00:21:08He has absolutely nothing to lose.
00:21:10He is here to learn.
00:21:12And if they're in a conversation of having a chance to win the race because the caution falls,
00:21:17see Rainey Blaney swerving right there to come to Pitt Road to let the guys know behind him
00:21:21to go up the racetrack and not run him over.
00:21:27So Ryan Blaney will surrender the lead to Pitt with 40 laps to go.
00:21:37Corey Heim will assume the lead.
00:21:42As Blaney gets four tires and Sunoco race fuel.
00:21:51So we're right back where we were a couple of green flag runs ago with Corey Heim leading this race
00:21:58and running long because he can.
00:21:59And I think I would run it until I was going to run out of gas.
00:22:03Look, just roll the dice and see if you can get yourself into that position.
00:22:09He's got a car that is fast enough to be able to compete up there if they ever get the
00:22:13track position swing to work out their way.
00:22:27See Chase Elliott right there stuck behind Noah Gregson.
00:22:31Trying to put him a lap down.
00:22:33When you get to the corner, you got to go the opposite direction that they do, much like for what
00:22:38Clint talked about earlier.
00:22:40You don't want to be right behind that car in front of you, so you just go in the opposite
00:22:43lane.
00:22:45So with Blaney's stop, that gives us 19 cars on the lead lap.
00:22:51And Greg is going to run you as hard as he possibly can.
00:22:54He goes two laps down right here.
00:22:55Your day is pretty much done this late in the race.

00:33:00They've kept themselves in the game all day and had a couple moments where you think that he's going to

00:33:12but done a good job of keeping themselves in the fight today again.

00:33:54and Alex Bowman right behind him looking for his second straight top ten,
00:33:59third last week at Talladega.

00:41:51Yeah, there were a lot of lap cars there right behind Chase Elliott.
