00:00I would like you to meet, by all means, the greatest wrestler in the entire world, Mr. Rowdy Roddy Piper.
00:09How are ya?
00:10Hi-ho!
00:10Come in and sit down.
00:12Loud.
00:13Your ears are all nasty. I know that your nose is smeared all over your face.
00:18Controversial.
00:19We know how intelligent you are.
00:21Oh, yeah.
00:22You do.
00:23Merciless. He's gonna go back to the chain. He's got it wrapped around the fist.
00:27As dangerous as he was in the ring, Rowdy Roddy Piper was absolutely lethal with a microphone in his hand.
00:33Hold up there, ladies!
00:35Today, we look back at one of the most impactful villains in WWE history, Rowdy Roddy Piper.
00:41You do not throw rocks at a man who's got a machine gun!
00:45This is WWE's greatest moments.
00:49Nice to have him, isn't it?
00:53It's your son of a man!
00:54Oh, my God! What the hell are you doing?
00:59Absolutely unbelievable!
01:00Oh, my lady, I'm a beast here.
01:08Welcome, everyone, to WWE's greatest moments. I'm Michael Cole.
01:12And on this edition, we're looking back at the career of one of the most polarizing superstars of all time,
01:17Rowdy Roddy Piper.
01:19Upon bursting on the professional wrestling scene, Piper's malicious magnetism and complete lack of a filter
01:24threw the eyes of the world directly to him.
01:27He had no problem sharing his controversial opinions.
01:30You couldn't wind up looking like this! I painted this myself!
01:33And soon enough, the Hot Rod had his own talk show, where he could torment his guests,
01:38however he pleased, Piper's Pit.
01:44We take you now, ladies and gentlemen, to Piper's Pit.
01:47We'd like to flatly state the views of Mr. Piper or those of Mr. Piper alone.
01:52First Piper's Pit, I believe, was a gentleman named Frankie Williams.
01:57Nobody knew anything about it.
01:58Being the kind of person that I am, and I'd like to give everybody a fair break.
02:03Piper's Pit was the Tonight Show, where the host could end up beating up the guests.
02:09Frank Williams, first of all, I don't know where you're coming from.
02:12Out of Columbus, Ohio.
02:14Right there, that one statement set the tone for the rest of Piper's Pit.
02:20I've never lost a match in Columbus, Ohio.
02:22Have you ever lost a match?
02:24Yeah.
02:25I have never seen you win a match in my whole career of watching you.
02:28Maybe what you do, maybe you should be making pizza.
02:30I'm not going on nobody.
02:32And now the cameraman's going, you know, get off of me.
02:35It's as simple as that.
02:36I might be allowed to register, but I'm still in there.
02:38I got another player, no.
02:41You had to be ready.
02:42You know, you never knew when he'd turn on you or he wanted to.
02:45He could chop you down to size pretty quick.
02:48That's incredible.
02:50And it was one of the first times, I think I said,
02:53Just when they think they got the answers, I changed the questions.
02:57It was a problem Saturday.
02:59People just went, did you see that?
03:02And it set the tone for everything.
03:07In the 1980s, WWE was a hotbed for celebrity involvement.
03:11Perhaps none as lauded as Rocky III's Clever Lang, Mr. T.
03:15Here comes Mr. T, ladies and gentlemen.
03:18Everyone loved the A-Team megastar.
03:21Everyone, that is, except the hot rod.
03:23I know who you are because your name's written on the back of the chair,
03:27and I'm assuming that that's there so you don't get lost.
03:29The rivalry between these two got so heated,
03:32a traditional wrestling match just wouldn't suffice.
03:35At WrestleMania II, Piper, a former amateur boxer,
03:38decided to challenge Mr. T at his own game,
03:40settling their differences in a boxing match.
03:49The best rivalries in WWE are the ones where you truly are invested in their hatred.
03:57Roddy, we get to throw jabs.
03:59I remember Roddy Piper throwing a jab, throwing a jab,
04:01and Piper always, he was always good with his hands.
04:04Piper, look at this.
04:05We were punching and whatnot, so that's what we're going to do.
04:09I'm in the ring going, what if I just took him out?
04:14Come on.
04:15Oh, wait a minute.
04:17I knew this was coming.
04:18Clearly, it doesn't look like a real boxing match.
04:21It actually resembles a real fight.
04:24Piper is right back on top of it.
04:26Ladies and gentlemen, the decision as a result of a disqualification, Mr. T.
04:33I loved how Piper could really take anything and make it into gold.
04:42In 1996, Roddy Piper was caught in the crosshairs of bizarre gold dust.
04:47I want a piece of you real bad, baby.
04:52The golden one became obsessed with the hot rod, but Piper was far from interested.
04:56Never one to back down from the fight,
04:58Piper accepted a challenge to a match between the two at WrestleMania 12.
05:02You want to fight you, jerk?
05:04Then I'll fight you, God.
05:06But this would be no ordinary one-on-one contest.
05:09It would take place outside the ring,
05:11in a Hollywood backlot brawl.
05:17Whoa!
05:18First shot was to the side window, man, and glass just went all over me, man.
05:24And here he comes, and he started just whooping my ass all over the place.
05:33I get in the car, and I started driving, and I'm looking at him,
05:37and I'm waiting for him to jump, so I kind of gassed it just a little bit.
05:41I just didn't move.
05:42Well, I was supposed to.
05:46His knees just went on the front of that car, and I was like,
05:50oh, my God, I just hit Roddy Piper, I just ran him over.
05:53This is totally out of hand.
05:55Roddy Piper was hit by a car.
05:57It took us from Hollywood to Anaheim.
06:01Here's Roddy Piper chasing gold dust.
06:04Back then, O.J. Simpson was hot.
06:06Everybody remembers where they were when the white bronco was on the highway
06:10getting chased by the police.
06:13In here!
06:14Whoa!
06:16It starts just stalking me, and I'm backing up,
06:18and I'm like, how did I end it in the arena?
06:20It's not a roll! Anything go!
06:23This was a brawl.
06:24They went full out.
06:26And it only ends when someone has had enough and leaves.
06:30The body, my wrist just went gold dust!
06:32My wife covers me up with my robe, and we run off,
06:36and that's how we end the match.
06:37I've never seen anything like this!
06:40Piper, I believe this was his last WrestleMania.
06:42What better way to end your WrestleMania career
06:46than to have it be in such a unique way?
06:52Still to come.
06:53Remember that old saying, what the hell, you forgot!
06:55What the hell, you forgot!
06:56What the hell?
07:00December 1984, at Madison Square Garden,
07:02pop icon Cindy Lauper presented Captain Lou Albano
07:06with a gold record for bringing the worlds of music
07:08and professional wrestling together.
07:10Captain Louis Albano!
07:12But it's never a party without the piper, right?
07:19Cyndi,
07:20brothers and sisters,
07:22I don't know what to say, I'm so grateful
07:23to receive this award.
07:26This is an honor to me.
07:28This is something special.
07:30It's really beautiful, Cyndi.
07:35That night, nobody could have been ready
07:38for that moment.
07:39Seth, please, please.
07:41I know even though, even though
07:43it was me that set this up.
07:46And it was me that started it.
07:48I want to present you with this.
07:49The main thrusters there, they all
07:51hate me. This is just icing on the cake.
07:55Oh, look out!
07:58Captain Lou Alvato, clover!
08:00I heard Roddy Piper once
08:01say that was the biggest moment
08:03of his career. Pure pandemonium.
08:07Look at Roddy Piper's
08:08just gone bananas!
08:10David Wong trying to come to the rescue
08:12but he's no match!
08:14Oh, he pile drives it right
08:16down into the canvas!
08:17Roddy Piper's going crazy here!
08:20It caught me off guard.
08:21I didn't think any way Piper's gonna come out
08:23and ruin this moment. It's just insanity.
08:25Look out! The Hucksters!
08:27Hitting the ring!
08:29Cyndi Lauper is down!
08:32I kicked Cyndi Lauper.
08:34I said to you, so
08:36the end of her career
08:38could be the beginning
08:40of yours.
08:41Things like that made Roddy
08:43the ultimate rebel.
08:45What a despicable, disgraceful display
08:48on the part of Roddy Piper!
08:52In 1986,
08:53Rowdy Roddy Piper took a brief absence
08:55from WWE and thus Piper's pit
08:57was no more. On his return,
08:59Piper was shocked to find his beloved pit
09:01replaced by The Flower Shop.
09:03Hosted by the adorable one, Adrian Adonis.
09:06I'm here to take my show back
09:08and the first thing that has to go
09:10are these damn flowers!
09:13Aided by Don Morocco
09:14and cowboy Bob Orton,
09:16Adonis brought the pain
09:17to the Hot Rod.
09:18But Roddy Piper's a man of pride.
09:20Do you think for one second
09:21Hot Rod will be humiliated
09:24by someone who wears a dress
09:25look like someone shot the curtain
09:26to Daisy?
09:27With over 93,000 screaming fans
09:30in attendance at WrestleMania 3,
09:31it would be billed as Roddy Piper's
09:33farewell to in-ring competition.
09:39This one's underway.
09:40And there ain't gonna be
09:41much holes in this one.
09:42This is gonna be a fight, you brother.
09:43That's the retirement match
09:45to WrestleMania 3.
09:46Adrian Adonis.
09:47Eh, you know, I knew there's
09:49nothing he wouldn't do.
09:50He's so good, and he's so tough.
09:53Roddy, just about out of this,
09:56doesn't have a clue where he is.
09:57They went at it pretty hard.
09:59They were amped and ready to go.
10:01I think they fed off each other, too.
10:04Oh!
10:04Moved over the top and down!
10:06It was so loud.
10:08They gave me probably the most memorable
10:11time in my career.
10:13Right in the middle of the ring.
10:15Roddy Roddy with the sleeper.
10:16That's it!
10:17The adorable one has been put on
10:19and the victory, Roddy Roddy Piper!
10:22I wouldn't imagine WrestleMania 3
10:24and 93,000 people standing on their feet.
10:28It's the nicest confident that you can get.
10:31And only they could give me that.
10:34And they did that night.
10:36For that, I'm ever grateful.
10:38I think that's the kindest thing
10:39that's ever happened in my career.
10:41Standing ovation!
10:4290,000 plus on their feet
10:44for the hot rod!
10:48Still to come.
10:49Don't blow no more smoke in my face.
10:52Both of these wrestlers
10:54will be chained to each other
10:55around the neck.
10:58Roddy Piper's Hall of Fame career
11:00had been built in the back
11:01of his rage-inducing persona.
11:03More so than his accolades in the ring.
11:05I was Rowdy before Rowdy was cool!
11:08Ha!
11:08But that's not to say
11:09his trophy case is empty.
11:11The 1992 Royal Rumble,
11:13Piper took on Intercontinental Champion
11:15the Mountie.
11:16Emerged victorious.
11:17Capturing gold for the first time
11:19in WWE.
11:20We have a new Intercontinental Champion!
11:23In front of 60,000 screaming fans
11:26at WrestleMania VIII,
11:27the hot rod would defend his new title
11:29in a contest with Bret the Hitman Hart.
11:32I want to win back the Intercontinental belt.
11:34You got it.
11:35I'm gonna take it.
11:36When it came time for the two
11:38to be face-to-face,
11:39things got heated.
11:43Both guys will pull out all the stops!
11:46Here we go!
11:46He's not at him!
11:47Here we go!
11:48It was an important story
11:49for Roddy to tell.
11:50He was a mentor to me,
11:52and our person always changed
11:53when we have to fight each other.
11:55What a second shot!
11:57Bret showing Piper,
11:58not only can I keep up with you,
12:00I can beat you.
12:01I think the hitman hurt his shoulder!
12:05He's gone!
12:06A small package!
12:07He's gone in the center!
12:08Almost had a great move!
12:11It was one of the best
12:13storytelling matches.
12:15It brought out the heel part
12:17of Roddy again a little bit.
12:19Oh, referee!
12:20John Todd ready to go there!
12:22He's got the bow!
12:23I was gonna hit him over the head
12:25with a bow and cobbled him.
12:26People were screaming,
12:27don't do it, don't do it.
12:28He's having second thoughts!
12:30Oh, what a second of this move!
12:32And they literally
12:33both throw that ball away!
12:35Oh, look at that move!
12:37Off the turnbuckle!
12:38He's on!
12:40It was Roddy that really
12:41was the first big-name wrestler
12:43to put me over.
12:45History's been made
12:46here in the Hooterdale!
12:48It's really cool that Piper
12:50at that stage of his career
12:51could essentially seal the show.
12:53Because sometimes when you think of
12:55one thing that they're really good at,
12:56Piper, oh, he's a good talker,
12:57he's a good talker.
12:58You have to have matches like this
13:00every now and then just to let people know
13:01and remind them that you can do more.
13:07Roddy Piper was a lightning rod
13:09for storing up anger,
13:10placing him right at home
13:11in the counterculture of the 1980s.
13:13I realize that your ears are all nasty
13:17and naughty!
13:18I know that your nose
13:19is smeared all over your face!
13:21Eventually, Piper's gift of gab
13:23granted him an audience
13:24with talk show host
13:25and fellow instigator
13:26Morton Downey Jr.
13:27at WrestleMania V.
13:33The fun has just begun.
13:35Back in the day,
13:36when Piper had Morton Downey Jr.
13:38on the show,
13:39he was red hot back then.
13:40How do you call yourself
13:42Morton Downey Jr.?
13:43That's the name your mama wanted to call me
13:45from the husband who reared me.
13:49The number one syndicated talk show
13:52at the time.
13:57Mr. Downey, I'd really appreciate it
14:00if you wouldn't do that again.
14:02Smoke?
14:02Yeah, especially blowing my face.
14:05I said don't blow smoke on my face.
14:08You blew smoke.
14:09All right, you jerk.
14:10Don't blow no more smoke in my face.
14:13He kept blowing smoke into Roddy's face
14:15and Roddy, of course, is who he is.
14:18You know, that's like the fourth time you've done that.
14:21Smoke all you want,
14:22but I'm going to show you what the wrestling business
14:24is really all about.
14:25And Piper did.
14:27Give me that smoke, would ya?
14:30Ya-ha!
14:31Ya-ha!
14:32Ya-ha!
14:32Fire extinguisher right in the kisser.
14:35I don't think Morton Downey
14:36ever been treated this way before.
14:38I always give him a good beginning
14:40and a great ending.
14:40They'll forgive a lot in between.
14:42I think the cigarette's out now.
14:44You fool with me,
14:46you'll find out that my fists are as fast as my little brother.
14:49Before making his way to WWE,
14:50Piper was embroiled in one of the most heated rivalries of his career
14:53with one Greg the Hammer Valentine.
14:56And he was known as the Hammer for good reason.
14:59If you can't take the pounding, get out of the ring.
15:02I feel that it's time to draw a line on Valentine.
15:05At Starcade 1983,
15:07Valentine and Piper would settle their differences chained together
15:10in one of the most brutal face-offs you'll ever see.
15:13A ruthless dog-caller match.
15:18Both of these wrestlers will be chained to each other around the neck.
15:22No disqualification to a finish.
15:26The meanest, nastiest, most brutal match you can think of.
15:31I can't imagine two men linked together like this in Mortal Kombat.
15:35They wanted to go out there and steal it, and they did.
15:38The match cannot be stopped, there's gotta be a winner.
15:41Roddy was a great wrestler, but he was never really solid and stiff like I was.
15:45But that night, he was.
15:49Roddy Piper right here could be a real danger fan.
15:53And here it is very definitely badly damaged at this point.
15:57Broke the eardrum.
15:58My ear is bleeding from here all the way down to my leg.
16:02Catches him with a chain once again and again.
16:04And Valentine goes face forward.
16:06They wanted to make sure that the fans knew that they were the real deal.
16:10You could see how brutal that match was.
16:16He got the pick.
16:17That's what makes a great match.
16:19You should never quit.
16:21You never give up.
16:23Roddy Piper did it.
16:24Roddy Piper did it.
16:26He got the pick.
16:30Up next is our final two moments on the countdown.
16:33What will take the number one spot?
16:36I'm the reason you've got no hair.
16:41From its inception, Piper's Pit was the place to be for any WWE superstar wanting to speak their mind.
16:47What an idiot.
16:48Are you kidding me?
16:49Over the years, the show created a wealth of unforgettable segments,
16:52but are perhaps none more famous than the 1984 appearance of Superfly Jimmy Snuka.
17:00This guy here comes, I don't know, maybe comes sniveling to the people.
17:04Comes and cries.
17:05Roddy Piper didn't give me a chance to say nothing on the pit.
17:09One of the most iconic moments in WWE history was the Piper's Pit with Jimmy Snuka.
17:16I'll tell you what, man.
17:18Here you go.
17:19Take the little microphone.
17:20There you go.
17:21Put it in the little greasy pot.
17:23I get this bag from Hank's with a pineapple.
17:27Watch it feel at home.
17:28Watch it feel like a Fiji island.
17:30Bananas.
17:31You want a banana?
17:32Have a banana.
17:33Coconut's in it.
17:35Ah, more coconut.
17:37I'm John Coconut Sneezes.
17:38Are you trying to disrespect me, butter?
17:42Am I making fun of you?
17:44No, no, no, no.
17:46No, sir.
17:48No, sir.
17:48No, sir.
17:49No, sir.
17:54He was that guy, and he loved to be despised.
17:59He was the perfect heel.
18:03With Roddy Roddy Piper, you never knew what he was going to do.
18:05This time, Roddy Roddy Piper created a moment that only Roddy Roddy Piper can create.
18:14It's now time for our number one moment, and it's one that propelled WWE into the mainstream media stratosphere.
18:22WWE had found its very own Superman in the immortal Hulk Hogan.
18:25Train, say your prayers, eat your vitamins, and believe in yourself, brother.
18:30But what is Superman without his greatest foe?
18:33And who better to step into that role than the white-pot instigator, Rowdy Roddy Piper?
18:39All of a sudden, this Hulkamania is going wild all over the place, and he's becoming a legend.
18:44Their bitter rivalry would be a fixture of pop culture.
18:47The aptly named War to Settle the Score, airing exclusively on MTV.
18:54Tonight on MTV.
18:57What really was the match that captured the tension was the war to settle the score.
19:03It was just like throwing big tanks of gas on the fire.
19:07We knew, once MTV got on board, this thing was going to be a monster.
19:13We have done action!
19:15We're on it!
19:16Whenever I went in there against Piper, it was always a war.
19:20Oh, and a shootout, ladies and gentlemen!
19:23Eventually, during the match, all hell breaks loose.
19:28Look out!
19:29Oh, come on!
19:31Come on, waves!
19:32Look out!
19:33Oh, you've got to be kidding me!
19:34Here comes Mr. King, ladies and gentlemen!
19:38There's no villain better than the hot rod, Rowdy Piper.
19:41He's the perfect guy to reach out to that pop culture, that MTV crowd,
19:46and draw them into the wrestling world.
19:48We've got a madhouse here.
19:49We have come back now!
19:50Come on!
19:50Security holding everyone back!
19:52If you ain't got enough guts to fight me one-on-one, mister,
19:55then take a hike and leave the title with me!
20:01Piper and Hogan's encounter set the wrestling world ablaze,
20:04leaving audiences everywhere wanting more,
20:06and setting the stage for the granddaddy of them all,
20:09the very first WrestleMania.
20:11The often imitated, never duplicated Roddy Piper
20:14was certainly a force to be reckoned with in WWE.
