00:28For most of us, the idea
00:29of catching lunch whilst being viciously stung
00:32by African killer bees seems unlikely.
00:37Because today, more than half of us live in cities.
00:42We've traded open horizons for walls
00:44and left just a handful of people still living by the land.
00:47They're the Earth's original explorers, the nomads,
00:50and as their land disappears, so does their way of life.
00:55It would be easy to believe that there's no area left
00:57still classed as truly wild.
01:00But you'd be wrong.
01:02There are still majestic pockets of land
01:04that are rugged, wild, and teeming with life.
01:07We found not just one hippo, but all the hippos.
01:11Whoa.
01:12This is the Tanzania you don't get to see.
01:15And the critical thing is,
01:16we need them for the health of our planet.
01:19I'm Lucy, and I'm an explorer.
01:21I've been leading expeditions all over the world
01:23for over a decade, and now I'm on a mission
01:26to take you with me.
01:27I've journeyed to some of the world's most distant corners,
01:30but this time, I'm trying to cross
01:32one of Africa's last great wildernesses on foot,
01:35a route that only a few have traveled,
01:37and never in this way.
01:39Once-in-a-lifetime experience.
01:40I feel like I've just stepped into a world
01:42and just trying to keep up.
01:43I want to show you the beauty.
01:45This place really is a paradise.
01:47The surprising...
01:48Lots of African killer bees.
01:49This is mad, and they're downright terrifying.
01:53Oh, my God.
01:54I'll be joined by those who still live by the land,
01:56true nomadic hunter-gatherers,
01:58and learn how they're adapting
02:00in a world that's changing fast.
02:01I'm going to have to get used to the fact
02:03that things are going to get killed.
02:04As we journey across this harsh terrain,
02:06we'll face predators.
02:08She's looking right at us.
02:10Extreme heat and days without water.
02:12I don't know if we've got enough for 24 hours.
02:14We'll need to come together
02:15and learn to work with the wild, not against it.
02:17I want to prove that this planet
02:19still has unspoilt places of all shapes and sizes
02:22still left to fight for.
02:24Because it has never been more important
02:26for us to build up our relationship
02:28with the natural world
02:29and protect these last wildernesses at all costs.
02:32This is unbelievably spectacular.
02:44The expedition got underway as I joined the Hadza,
02:47the people who live by ancient traditions
02:49of hunting and gathering.
02:50Having to learn very, very quickly
02:52how to build a shelter like the Hadza do.
02:55OK, we're running.
02:56It wasn't long before the dangers of the bush
02:58revealed themselves.
03:01I was put to the test,
03:03learning the ways of the hunt.
03:05I suppose we're eating monkey tonight, then.
03:08And proving my worth
03:09as I harvested honey
03:10from Africa's aggressive killer bees.
03:12Oh, thank you for teaching.
03:14Our journey then began
03:15as we tackled our first mountain.
03:18It's just a reminder of what's to come.
03:20Because up here, mountains,
03:23down there, dangerous wildlife.
03:50We're in East Africa, in Tanzania,
03:53journeying on foot
03:53through one of Africa's last great wildernesses
03:56and home to all the creatures
03:57that make this continent iconic.
03:59From lions to elephants to hyenas.
04:02We're about 60 kilometres into our journey.
04:05And right now,
04:05we're making our way
04:06through one of the few wild forests left.
04:09And it doesn't take long for Julius,
04:11expert animal tracker,
04:12to spot something.
04:14What are you doing here?
04:19Elephant dance here.
04:22Oh, yeah.
04:22Elephant.
04:23Elephant dance.
04:25Yeah.
04:27That's fresh elephant dance right here.
04:32And, yeah, pretty scary.
04:37Ah, so there's water there.
04:39So the elephants have come.
04:41You can literally see
04:42their footprints.
04:44Yeah.
04:44So clear.
04:48Is that elephant bed?
04:49Elephant.
04:50Is that where they lay?
04:51Yeah, the elephant.
04:52They lay down.
04:53On the chima.
04:54And they eat.
04:56Yeah.
04:58Gentle giants from afar,
05:00but up close,
05:00they can be deadly.
05:02And just a few months ago,
05:03two people were killed here.
05:05That's why we move quietly.
05:07But in a forest this dense,
05:08it would be easy to stumble across them.
05:11It's been a heavy pack day
05:13coming down the mountain
05:14and then now here.
05:17And, I mean,
05:17it's beautiful,
05:18kind of ancient forest
05:19with beautiful moss
05:21and kind of mystical, really.
05:23And it would be made
05:24much better
05:26if there wasn't elephants in here.
05:28But there are elephants in here.
05:30And even though it's great
05:32to be down from the mountain,
05:33I can't say I'm
05:36like ecstatic about this phase.
05:38I'm actually quite a bit
05:40anxious about it,
05:41to be honest.
05:42Sometimes this elephant
05:44for this area,
05:45they are very aggressive
05:46because all around
05:47this forest,
05:49there are villages,
05:50farms area.
05:52And elephants smelling beans,
05:54farms.
05:55They get angry.
05:55Yeah.
05:56We're going to eat
05:57and come,
05:59Oh,
06:01Oh,
06:05and elephant,
06:06I don't like.
06:08OK.
06:09Is that why you have the whistle?
06:11The whistle.
06:11For images.
06:13But I know
06:14we try tomorrow to walk.
06:16If we are sea,
06:17we try to,
06:18for experience.
06:20If we are not aggressive,
06:22they will leave us.
06:24We will try.
06:25Yeah.
06:25We will try.
06:26Yes.
06:28Julius has given me
06:30a clear reminder
06:30of the real dangers
06:31we face doing this
06:32on foot.
06:33But it's not just elephants
06:34that we need to be worried about.
06:37We try to find a place
06:38where it doesn't have
06:39a lot of tree.
06:40Why?
06:41If we camp under
06:42the big tree,
06:43Yeah.
06:43Then maybe the leopard
06:44will be somewhere there.
06:45OK.
06:46OK.
06:46So you have to,
06:47you have to basically weigh up.
06:49Do you want to be out
06:49in the open with the elephants
06:50or do you want to be
06:52with the leopards
06:52jumping on your tent?
06:54Yes.
06:54We'll find a place
06:55where it's safe.
06:56Yeah.
06:57How do you think
06:58Julius and Delali
06:59and Moses feel?
07:01Scared.
07:01You think so?
07:02Yeah.
07:03The good thing is
07:03Moses bring his
07:05magic stick.
07:06Do you think he'll do that
07:07tonight?
07:08Yeah.
07:08So we've got some magic.
07:09I think we need that.
07:10I think we need that as well.
07:11I think we need
07:12some Moses magic tonight.
07:33Moses has been telling us
07:34about one of his Aki
07:36traditions, which is
07:39essentially magic
07:40and it can make the camp
07:42disappear.
07:43so that any predator
07:44or people, anyone
07:46out to get us
07:47won't be able to see our camp.
07:49So we can't go past
07:50that perimeter
07:50that he's made
07:51this sort of
07:54spell on, I suppose.
07:57So it's going to keep us
07:58safe tonight.
08:22There's something like that.
08:24There's something like that.
08:28Can you hear them?
08:43Oh, it is fresh.
08:49Oh, man.
08:50It's fresh.
08:51How can you tell it's fresh?
08:52Just by...
08:53Oh, yeah.
08:53Yeah, it is fresh.
08:54Oh, man.
08:56The elephants got close last night,
08:58but thankfully,
08:58they decided to stay away.
09:00Oh, man.
09:01Maybe Moses' magic
09:02is working after all.
09:07Now it's time to get going,
09:08and if we can make it
09:09another 60 kilometres,
09:11we'll be able to be
09:12clear of this forest.
09:16The forest.
09:18Yeah, forest.
09:20The very biggest forest.
09:22It's a big forest.
09:23Ah, yes.
09:25What is it?
09:27Sharp.
09:28Sharp.
09:30If the animals
09:31don't get you out here,
09:32the plants will.
09:35I've been stinging.
09:36You've been stinging everywhere.
09:38Yeah.
09:40Stinging nettles.
09:42Stinging nettles.
09:43Are you okay, Winnes?
09:45Stinging nettles.
09:46Yeah.
09:48Hey, hey, hey.
09:50There.
10:00Okay, well,
10:11were we not filming
10:12that other bit?
10:13Ow.
10:17Oh, it's funny.
10:21It's tickly.
10:23It's tickly.
10:26I'm good.
10:27How are you?
10:28Your English just
10:29suddenly come out
10:30with sentences.
10:32Mayelo.
10:32Mayelo.
10:32Mayelo.
10:34What's that?
10:35Good for the tummy.
10:36Good for the tummy.
10:45This forest is a world of its own,
10:47lush and alive.
10:48And it's one of the few places
10:50still holding back the drought.
10:52Thousands of people still depend
10:53on this forest to survive,
10:55for water,
10:56for wood,
10:56and for grazing land.
10:57But those same needs
10:59are taking their toll.
11:00Trees are being illegally felled for timber and firewood,
11:03and communities are burning whole sections and deforesting to make room for livestock.
11:08Without forests like this, the rivers dry up, the soil turns to dust,
11:12and life here just becomes impossible.
11:29Are you tired today, or are you good?
11:30Yeah, I'm good, yeah.
11:31Yeah?
11:33No hiking, but we are good because I think we have more energy.
11:37You're explorers.
11:39Yeah.
11:44How the hell are you finding your nail with a machete?
11:49I am oddly amazed by this.
11:53Forget the nail scissors. Use machetes for your toenails.
11:58Getting the natural toothbrush.
12:00Yes.
12:03Second stage of toothbrushing.
12:05Yes.
12:07The brush, very good.
12:08Very good.
12:11How do you know the English for that?
12:14Natural toothbrush.
12:27Good morning.
12:28The weather outside is pretty terrible, so we're just waiting for it to hope visibility to get better.
12:35Because we wouldn't be able to see anything, any animals, if we left now.
12:40And it's wet.
12:42And we don't have, like, water, the guys don't have water proofs.
12:46Looking forward to getting into the warmer climates, which should be in a few days.
12:51We all need a bit of that.
12:53We'll need to get into those warmer climates, also, so we can hunt again, but we can recoup our supplies,
13:00because our rations are running low.
13:05We can't wait any longer for the weather to improve, now we're moving into denser forest, which means we're even
13:11more vulnerable to our biggest threat.
13:14Elephants.
13:16The mist adds to the feeling of vulnerability, like the forest is watching, holding a quiet kind of authority.
13:25So we are literally just following an elephant trail, because it is the best we can do, because otherwise it's
13:34just so dense.
13:39We don't know how we're going to find a way through this without coming across the elephants.
13:44Okay.
13:46Elephants are close.
13:49We don't need to make noise.
13:51Okay.
13:52If we do come across an elephant, and it's aggressive, then the best thing we can do is try and
13:59put something between you and the elephant.
14:02So, just being aware of all the big trees around.
14:07Moving in forest isn't my team's natural environment.
14:10I can tell they're nervous.
14:12As am I.
14:23It's been a little nervous morning, so it's like around this area, this elephant.
14:31Big elephant.
14:34I'm just trying to shoot you.
14:40Terrible.
14:42Terrible.
14:46I've changed direction.
14:49Because the elephant is right now.
14:56They've come right through.
14:59Four of elephants.
15:07Huh.
15:07I don't know.
15:07Oh,小 Chief.
15:13Charlie, you're let me go.
15:33We've run into an elephant.
15:35All we can do is get high and wait it out.
15:45It's gone.
15:46That was close.
15:53That's a way to get your heart pumping.
16:06This terrain is relentless and we're only covering a measly six kilometres per day.
16:11We've still 14 more to go until we're out of the forest.
16:14And with the weight of the rucksacks, the long days and now the close elephant encounter, we're all feeling worn
16:20out.
16:22Oh, this forest is pretty intimidating.
16:34This forest is going to be tough going for the next few days and I just hope the team will
16:39cope.
16:40A little bit worrying that they're this exhausted.
16:43I mean, I know they're not used to carrying this weight, but it's so crazy, isn't it?
16:48Because Julius and Delali will walk 50 kilometres in a day.
16:52I don't think of anything of it, but in this terrain, with the bags.
16:58Oh my God.
16:59Okay, I'm going to have to go.
17:00I need the loo.
17:01Uh-oh.
17:02I hope that's not me getting ill.
17:04Yep, that was me having diarrhoea and actually saying that.
17:09I think I need to go again.
17:12I don't need to feel messy.
17:15It's not good to get sick this early on.
17:19Push through it.
17:20So to speak.
17:22Getting sick out here isn't ideal, though I can't let it slow me down.
17:26The longer we stay in this forest, the greater the risk for all of us.
17:38I am very ready to get out from the forest.
17:41What's it been like?
17:42Scared.
17:44Moses.
17:45Mum.
17:46Did you say mum?
17:47Yeah, mum.
17:48Oh, no.
17:50Shall we go?
17:51Shall we go?
17:52Okay.
17:53Yeah.
17:54Today maybe to go outside.
17:57We've got to get out.
17:57The forest, yes.
17:58Yeah, we've got to get out now.
17:59This is very dangerous.
18:02Very dangerous forest.
18:04Ah, let's get out of here.
18:14Thankfully I'm feeling better and we're finally leaving the forest.
18:18Heading into terrain where it should be easier to move and make progress.
18:27With the wet, misty forest behind us, we now enter the dry Hadza land.
18:32We've got to walk 40 kilometres through here and we'll reach our resupply.
18:37In the meantime, I'm hoping we'll be able to gather some food.
18:40After all, this is the kind of environment that Julius and Dilali are used to.
18:46Everyone feels more at home here.
18:47Yeah.
18:50Julius has been busy.
18:52He had successfully found two Hadza men who are going to be escorting us through this
18:57area and we're following them right now at a great pace.
19:02I might add, going to help us a little bit figure this place out because our rations are so low
19:08now.
19:09So it's going to be a case of using the Hadza survival skills, putting what I've learnt to the test.
19:16But first, having to get used to these spiky, spiky bushes everywhere and trees.
19:35Ah, so we've just spotted some tubers so we can get some food.
19:43Our energy has been getting so low and we've been getting weaker.
19:47So this food comes just in time.
19:52You're going straight in for it?
19:55Is it obvious that we've run out of Russians?
20:01Lots of water in it.
20:03So what have you found, Julius?
20:06Bubble gum?
20:06Bubble gum?
20:07Yeah.
20:08We take and we pick in that.
20:14Natural bubble gum?
20:16Yeah.
20:20Oh yeah. It tastes minty.
20:24Natural bubble gum actually has a minty taste to it.
20:28But chewing gum isn't going to sustain us for long.
20:31But then, we strike gold.
20:34Is it baobao tree?
20:35Yeah.
20:36That's easy.
20:37We can go have shade under the baobao tree.
20:43The baobao tree is known as the tree of life.
20:46And out here, it really earns the name.
20:49Among other things, it gives shade, stores water and its fruit is packed with nutrients.
20:54Is it?
20:56A little bit bitter, but it's very good.
20:58Chew it and then spit it up.
21:00Yeah, chew until...
21:01Oh, let's go.
21:04Mmm, like a sweep.
21:07Moses is getting into it.
21:08Moses is getting into it.
21:08Mmm.
21:09Having some breakfast.
21:14We think there could be a bee's nest, but it's high up in the tree and the guys have suggested
21:19that it should be me who climbs it.
21:21Of course.
21:23The guys have gone and made lots of pegs, so I don't know how far I was thinking that I'm
21:29going to make it up there.
21:31No, very high.
21:32Yeah.
21:34The Hadza have been using this method of pegs to climb up to look for honey and more fruit
21:38for thousands of years.
21:40And it works surprisingly well.
21:53Oh, yes, yes!
21:58Oh.
22:00Yes.
22:00Yes, you.
22:02Oh, yes, you.
22:04Ah.
22:05Turns out no bees nest, so the hunt must go on.
22:08Yes.
22:11If you need a mallet to climb the baobab tree, this man knows how to use a mallet.
22:21We're still on a mission to find honey, and it's not long before Julius spots something.
22:27Sweet bees.
22:28Sweet bees?
22:29Yeah, sweet bees. They're a small one and very tiny and not to bite.
22:35Oh, so we can just get...
22:36Oh wow, okay.
22:37I've never heard of bees that don't sting.
22:43This insect?
22:44Oh yeah, they're the bees.
22:45Oh wow.
22:46Sweet bees.
22:47They're tiny, aren't they?
22:48Yeah, the bees.
22:50Oh, you're eating the baby bees.
22:53Julius and Delalia are just going in for the baby bees.
22:56I'll wait for the honey.
22:59The tree is cut in a way that means both the tree and the bee colony can survive.
23:03And you can just keep going back to it for more honey.
23:19I can already tell the difference in Julius's mood.
23:27He feels so much more at home, as he would do in this environment, and he knows how to get
23:37the resources.
23:39Although that honey is good from the stingless bees, he definitely doesn't give the same amount of honey.
23:45So we're on the lookout for proper African killer bee honey hive.
23:51Honey hive, bee hive.
23:52So I have spotted a tree, and it looks like there's African killer bees in there.
23:58Which means we can get a good meal, get some honey, and it's probably my opportunity to try and prove
24:03myself a little bit.
24:05And these are the African killer bees?
24:07Yeah, the African killer bees.
24:09Yeah, okay.
24:10This is the baby.
24:11This one first, or that one?
24:13I'm feeling pretty confident after already having tried this a few weeks ago.
24:17But something about this time feels different.
24:20The stakes feel higher.
24:26We're using plenty of smoke.
24:28It's not working.
24:30The bees go into full defence mode.
24:38I'm getting stung already.
24:50This is it.
24:51If I can get a lot of honey, we'll then have enough food to get us to our resupply.
24:57Wow.
24:58Wow.
24:59Hold it.
25:00Okay.
25:01Do it out.
25:02Yeah, yeah.
25:03Yes.
25:04There.
25:07There.
25:08Close it.
25:09Close it.
25:10Oh.
25:11Yes.
25:13Oh.
25:13Yes.
25:15Oh.
25:17This is African killer bees.
25:19Oh.
25:19Yes, this is the African.
25:20He's got one in his mouth.
25:23Oh.
25:24Cheese.
25:25Any more?
25:28Here.
25:28Oh, yeah.
25:29In my hair.
25:32There's a lot of hair inside.
25:34Oh.
25:35Lots of African killer bees in my hair.
25:38There's no bees now.
25:39There's no bees.
25:40There's no bees.
25:40Okay.
25:40Yeah, there's already.
25:41Just hair.
25:43Go, go, go.
25:44Did it.
25:47Got the honey.
25:49I didn't expect that.
25:50I didn't expect that.
25:52The last one we did was much easier.
25:54Yeah.
25:55Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
25:55It got your tongue?
25:56Yeah.
25:57Oh, no.
25:58You sure you don't want a tablet?
26:00This man is nails.
26:03Are you sure you don't want a tablet?
26:06It was very aggressive.
26:08I think you'll never see something like that.
26:11At least we've had lots and lots of honey.
26:26Our route is taking us closer to where Julius and Delali were born.
26:29And we want to bring a gift to the community.
26:32And there's one present that always goes down well in these parts.
26:36There's a red desert rose tree in this area used to make poison arrows.
26:40So we take a small detour to try and find it.
26:42How do you spot those?
26:44To the untrained eye for these guys.
26:47This is a tree to gather your necessities for poison arrow making.
26:54Poison arrows are used on the bigger, more dangerous animals like buffalo.
26:57And it means when the Hadza hunt them, they don't have to get too close.
27:01A single buffalo can feed multiple families for weeks.
27:05It's incredibly valuable.
27:07And how much is that amount? How much poison would that be?
27:13Maybe 10 to 15 hours.
27:15OK.
27:27The resupply and two days of rest is on everyone's mind right now.
27:38We've hit the edge of where Julius and Delali's community roam.
27:41And are greeted by one of the elders.
27:43Most of the tribe are still away hunting and gathering.
27:46But he's keen to start the poison arrow making whilst we still have light.
27:55An elder has to be the one who cuts it.
27:58That's the sort of tradition.
28:00So this man is doing a fine job of cutting, boiling it.
28:05And then leaving it in there for 15 to 30 minutes.
28:09Let's see what happens.
28:11I'm not going too close to the smoke because it will poison me quite literally.
28:21You go three times, you boil it, and I guess that just means that the poison gets more concentrated and
28:25concentrated.
28:26The solution gets blacker and blacker.
28:29The fumes are getting strong.
28:34It takes hours to prepare, slowly heating down into a thick black tar.
28:45I don't think I'd be touching that with my bare hands.
28:48Deadly poison.
28:51You have to be really careful handling this.
28:53If you've got even a tiny cut on your hand, this poison will get into your bloodstream.
29:00Now that it's made, this community can use it in their hunts and help feed their families.
29:04Can I see it still?
29:06And that is how you make poison arrows.
29:08It's quite the process.
29:11I really do wonder who figured that out first though.
29:14I guess we'll never know.
29:17We've hit our resupply location and now it's time to stock up and prepare our food ahead of the next
29:22part of our expedition.
29:23We organise this resupply stop in advance as this marks midway of our journey.
29:30Go this way.
29:34We're here to see the place where Julius and Delali were born.
29:37And they tell me that there's a familiar tree I have to see.
29:41And they're about to show me something I never could have imagined.
29:47This is the tree?
29:48Yeah.
29:49Wow.
29:54The baobao tree is naturally hollow and for generations this is where Hadza women have come to give birth.
30:01Come, come inside.
30:03For safety, the women stay inside here for weeks before and after birth, cared for by the rest of the
30:09community.
30:10The tree offers shade and protection from wildlife and somehow it's surprisingly comfortable.
30:20And you were born in here?
30:22Yes, yes.
30:22That's amazing.
30:23Me and Delali is born here.
30:26Many people.
30:28Yeah.
30:30That's incredible that you and Julius were born in here.
30:33Yes.
30:33Many, many other people.
30:35Yeah, many.
30:37Can you imagine being born in the tree?
30:43It's really nice.
30:45It's really nice.
30:46I can see the appeal of giving birth in this tree.
30:51When I was told that you were born in a tree, I wasn't thinking of a tree as magnificent as
30:58this.
30:59I mean, it's amazing, yeah.
31:01It's amazing, yeah.
31:01People should live in this like full time, like all the time.
31:06It's very nice.
31:08Yeah.
31:11So, so cool.
31:22He knows his reborn.
31:24Yeah, he did us come.
31:26Ooh.
31:27New bear.
31:29This thorn bush is secured in the doorway to keep the likes of leopards out.
31:34And the door.
31:34New bear.
31:35New bear.
31:36New bear.
31:36New bear.
31:37New bear.
31:37New bear.
31:38The Baobao tree's nickname, the tree of life, suddenly takes on a whole other meaning.
31:50These women are so strong and so brave and so stoic.
31:55I'm quite inspired by them.
31:58They can live like this and raise a family and still survive out here.
32:07Then makes, definitely makes our lives back home feel very soft.
32:13We do not have it bad.
32:14We like to complain as Brits.
32:17We like to moan.
32:18But come on.
32:19It's perspective.
32:22Yeah.
32:22Yeah.
32:23That's what these trips give you.
32:25It's perspective.
32:36The sun is setting and we have to continue our journey tomorrow.
32:39But first, I want to get one final gift for the Hadza community.
32:43Delali suggested I purchase a goat from a different neighbouring pastoralist tribe so that we can all have a party.
32:50But of course, this goat isn't to be a pet.
32:53It's for dinner.
32:56So I've been left with the goat.
32:58The goat's not having a very good time.
33:00I'm not having a very good time listening to it.
33:02Now he's quiet, fed him food so that he can have a last meal.
33:10Moses is given the honour of slaughtering the goat.
33:13And for someone from the Aki tribe, this is a big moment.
33:17The guys wouldn't offer this role unless they saw him as one of their own.
33:23So the goat has been slaughtered and I guess now it's time to cut the meat and get the party
33:30going.
33:31So he's like Hadza.
33:33He's like Hadza.
33:35Moses is proving himself now by being the one to cut the meat.
33:40So it's a day of proving ourselves.
33:46Julius is saying that only the older men are allowed to eat the goat's bollocks.
33:51And I can't say I'm too upset about hearing this news.
33:56Before everyone can eat, the delicacy must first be enjoyed by the oldest men in the community.
34:01Julius being one of them.
34:04Good.
34:06Yeah.
34:07Nice one.
34:09Me?
34:10I thought it was only men.
34:12Older men.
34:18So, but I'm allowed to taste?
34:21Oh God.
34:22I thought I'd just got away with that.
34:27This is the boll.
34:29No, I'm lucky to eat this.
34:31Okay.
34:34I'm the first woman to eat a goat boll.
34:38Oh God.
34:42That's what I'm eating.
34:43Oh my God.
34:45Let's just say it's not very chewable.
34:48So I attempt one big swallow.
34:53It's gone.
34:54I ate it.
34:56New bear.
34:57New bear, yeah.
34:58I can't believe I just did that.
35:00Whew.
35:01That was an experience.
35:03Been trying to avoid meat so much.
35:05And then I just ended up eating a testicle because women don't usually go off with a testicle.
35:12Oh my God, I can taste it still.
35:15That taste is not going away any time soon, is it?
35:18Oh gross.
35:21And with dinner over, it's now time to get dressed for the party.
35:25Oh yeah, that's nice and tight.
35:28What do you think, Moses?
35:30Wow.
35:38Wow.
35:38Wow, thank you.
35:39New bear.
35:40That was amazing.
35:42What do you think?
35:43Oh, you are beautiful as well.
35:46Wow.
35:47Wow, wow!
35:48Wow.
35:48Wow.
35:49Wow.
35:49Wow, wow.
35:49Wow, wow, wow, wow!
35:51man, wow, wow.
36:04Wow, yeah, wow.
36:30The party has put everyone in a positive mood,
36:33which is exactly what we need,
36:34because what lies ahead is going to be tough.
36:38We're about to climb high up into the escarpment
36:40before heading into the land of the lions.
36:54Good morning.
36:55Well, last night was amazing.
36:57Yesterday was amazing.
36:58And there was another sandstorm,
37:01or dust devils, that got into my tent.
37:04And as you can see, I'm incredibly dirty.
37:07We're going to try and wash my face.
37:09And then we've got a big day today.
37:12So yeah, phase two.
37:15Phase two begins once we get over the escarpment,
37:18this high ridge that guards the land ahead
37:20and the gateway before the Serengeti.
37:23We need to pick the right route.
37:24We could be up there for days,
37:26so it's time to say our goodbyes
37:28and continue with the expedition.
37:32Met the women.
37:34Very friendly and welcoming.
37:37Time to go.
37:39Here we go, here we go, here we go again.
37:43Oi, yi, yi.
37:45Go, Moses, go.
37:48Oh, we're going to get a photo.
37:51Good day.
37:52Get up.
37:54We're just starting our ascent of the escarpment.
37:58It's a hot, hot day.
38:02Water is going to be a problem for the next few days
38:04and the temperature is over 30 degrees Celsius,
38:07so we're each carrying eight litres.
38:09And despite all having water bladders to hold it,
38:12Dilali picks this red bucket.
38:14It's a bucket filled with water.
38:16It's not just an empty bucket.
38:19Heat injury can strike quickly here.
38:22There's no time to grit teeth and push through.
38:24I insist we stop.
38:26It's just coming up.
38:28I'm just trying to get Moses to stop and change
38:30because he's currently wearing black trousers.
38:34That's far too hot for that,
38:35so I'm a little worried about him.
38:37So I'm just trying to make him stop and change.
38:42You okay, Moses?
38:43Yeah, I'm worried about you.
38:52He's got his shorts on.
38:55I get the feeling that this challenge so soon
38:58after our celebrations and resupply
38:59has been a bit of a reality check for the team.
39:02I'm hoping that once we get to the top,
39:04we'll find our groove again.
39:06Sweaty.
39:09Can't sweat too much.
39:10Don't have too much water.
39:13We've been carrying all of our water
39:15but our supplies are dwindling.
39:19So let's hope we can get
39:22over this ridge and down
39:24to some sort of water
39:26before we run out.
39:30I'm just looking for a spot
39:32that we can camp.
39:35I think this will be good.
39:37A little bit of shade,
39:39a bit of security.
39:41We've carried all of our water,
39:42so that's okay.
39:45And I think
39:48we'll be pretty safe here.
39:50Animal watching.
39:52Yeah.
39:53Must be safe.
39:55Mm-hmm.
40:00A little scorpion.
40:03Baboons around here.
40:05Getting closer to the lions.
40:08That's why I'm asking.
40:09Yeah.
40:10You make fire
40:11because of elephants?
40:12Yeah.
40:13Yeah.
40:14Here's a good place.
40:16It's a mountain.
40:17There's rocks here.
40:18So it's good
40:18for running away.
40:21Yeah, running away.
40:22Yeah.
40:23But if you run away,
40:24please wake me up as well.
40:26No, don't run.
40:27Don't leave me sleeping.
40:29The fire might keep
40:30the elephants away tonight,
40:31but it doesn't seem
40:33to be stopping
40:33other unexpected visitors.
40:37There's someone watching us.
40:40Oh, say you.
40:43Oh.
40:45Say you.
40:48We've got visitors.
40:50They're from the Toga tribe.
40:52The Toga tribe.
40:53Yeah.
40:54There's a lot of Toga.
40:55Ah, yes.
40:56A lot.
40:57Dany.
40:58Azabe.
41:00This is a lot.
41:01Yeah.
41:02Yeah.
41:03The Toga tribe
41:04are a semi-nomadic tribe
41:05who live around this area,
41:07known for the stealth
41:08and fierce warrior history.
41:10Our presence here
41:11draws attention.
41:13Dilali chooses
41:13to sleep by the fire
41:14to keep watch.
41:19We had no problems
41:20with people last night.
41:22Just a scorpion
41:23just here.
41:24But also,
41:25we've got some people
41:26visiting right now.
41:27Just saying hello.
41:29There's always,
41:29there's always something.
41:31Word has clearly spread
41:33within the Toga tribe
41:34that we're here.
41:35The silence is deafening.
41:37I hope it's just curiosity.
41:47I'm really, really excited
41:49to see
41:51what's on the other side
41:52once we make it over this
41:54and get to the ridge.
41:57Because then
41:58the Serengeti awaits.
42:02Oh, over there.
42:04I see a giraffe.
42:07It's amazing.
42:08It's my first giraffe
42:10in the wild.
42:14There's a giraffe right there
42:15with its long neck
42:17looking right at us.
42:18We must be getting closer
42:19to the Serengeti.
42:20Yeah.
42:22Definitely getting closer
42:25to the wildlife heart.
42:27One of the wildlife hearts
42:29of the whole world.
42:30The Serengeti.
42:35Big walking day.
42:37Tomorrow we'll get
42:38to the Serengeti.
42:40And right now
42:41it's time
42:42for the best moment
42:43of the day
42:43which is
42:45to take off
42:46my shoes.
42:53I am feeling quite weak.
42:55I think it was the,
42:56the food.
42:58I'm not eating enough.
43:00Delali's role
43:01in the team
43:01is hunter-gatherer
43:02but when there's
43:03nothing around
43:03it's time
43:04to bring out
43:05the ugali.
43:06Ugali is East Africa's
43:08staple food
43:08made from maize flour.
43:10Easy to make
43:11and basically
43:12rocket fuel.
43:13We've been saving
43:14our big pack
43:15for moments like this
43:16when rations are low
43:17and we need the energy.
43:18Especially
43:19with our biggest challenge
43:20yet ahead of us.
43:21the Serengeti.
43:23Rollie, rollie, rollie.
43:26Good morning.
43:28And
43:30chef de lali.
43:34Chef de lali
43:35does who cooks
43:35ugali.
43:36That's the cooking show.
43:38I'm not very good
43:39at eating
43:40with ugali
43:40because it's really hot
43:42and it's like
43:43basically putting yourself,
43:44your hands
43:44in mashed potatoes
43:45and I just can't
43:47eat it quick enough
43:48because it's so hot.
43:49A bit of bread roll
43:50a bit of toast
43:53including toast.
43:55That's really good
43:56actually.
43:58It's better than
43:59goat's testicle.
44:01I'll tell you that.
44:03Mmm.
44:04The meal marks
44:05the end of one chapter
44:06and the beginning
44:07of the next challenge.
44:09We're doing things
44:10a little bit differently.
44:11We're going to be
44:11walking through
44:12the Serengeti
44:14and we've got
44:15special permits
44:15to do that.
44:16We have to have
44:17our wits about us
44:19I've got to learn fast
44:21and be very aware
44:24because let's just see
44:25how much wildlife
44:26there is.
44:27We all think
44:28that we know
44:28the Serengeti
44:29but I think
44:29this is a way
44:30of really showing
44:31a part
44:32that you never
44:32get to see before
44:34and I can't wait
44:34to find out
44:35what that part is.
44:48We're going to go
44:49and we'll talk
44:49about it.
44:50I'll talk to you
44:51that we're going to
45:06Oh my God.
45:32Watch out, to our head, to our head, wow, look, look, look, look, look, look, look,
45:37look at this incredible view that we've got, now that we're at the top.
45:46It fills up the soul, being in scenery like this.
45:51Incredible.
45:54Yes, yes.
45:59The last four weeks have pushed us, but it's nothing compared to what lies ahead in the Serengeti.
46:09We take on the Serengeti.
46:11As soon as we arrived here, there's just so much wildlife.
46:14Amazing.
46:15And are exposed to everything the wild throws at us.
46:18Our water collecting has been made far more dangerous than expected.
46:22Cross paths with lions.
46:24Whoa, he's right by camp.
46:27And run dangerously low on water.
46:28I don't know if we've got enough for 24 hours.
46:31Stepping closer to our final hurdle.
46:33Mount Lengai, the volcano.
46:35This is it.
46:36The final push.
46:38What's among these?
46:55We are just about the first time.
46:55The first time I lost this place.
46:56In cambio,
46:56You think you're theamatль from collectors to your religion.
47:03You're the MuDI durch.
47:04To look,
