01:09ДИНАМИЧНАЯ МУЗЫКА
01:21Kimmy Antonelli is the youngest ever leader of an F1 World Championship
01:26after back-to-back victories.
01:28He's back at a circuit where last year he picked up sprint pole.
01:32Can he repeat defeat in 2026?
01:36We're at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami,
01:38the Miami International Autodrome.
01:40The scene as F1 returns after a five-week break.
01:44Sprint qualifying gets underway at half past nine.
01:49Evening all.
01:50Welcome to Miami.
01:51It is a sweltering one today.
01:54Very, very hot indeed.
01:56My sweat is dripping down my back,
01:57but that's probably more information that you need
01:59at this stage of the evening.
02:01Welcome, Martin Brumman, the own shift, Jensen Brumman.
02:04Let's get into Kimmy.
02:05As I said, the youngest ever leader of a F1 World Championship.
02:10And as I said here,
02:11the place that he picked up sprint pole last year.
02:14Yes, it's interesting, isn't it?
02:15Because he looks so good.
02:16Then he went on the missing list for nine races,
02:19making mistakes like you'd expect from a rookie teenager.
02:23But it's really telling that he's kept his head,
02:25kept his self-confidence,
02:27turned that around,
02:28and now leads the World Championship, we're going to say.
02:31What have you seen that he's added to,
02:34if you like, from last year, Jensen?
02:36Well, it's experience.
02:37You know, you've got to remember
02:38that it was his first year in Formula One last year.
02:40Yes, he did a lot of miles in the car,
02:42probably more than any other driver
02:43before they started racing in Formula One.
02:46A lot of testing.
02:47But testing's one thing, and then racing is another.
02:50Put him in a situation with the likes of...
02:52Fernando Alonso, Charles Leclerc,
02:54you know, Lewis Hamilton,
02:55multiple world champions.
02:57It's very different than just practice.
02:59So it's just been experience for him.
03:01Seems like he's got his head screwed on,
03:02wants to learn,
03:04and he's not just throwing everything at it now.
03:05He's building up to it a little bit more, I think.
03:07And the team obviously talking down
03:09his World Championship chances.
03:11They think, by his own admission,
03:13he's going to make mistakes
03:14because he's still raw.
03:15George has got the consistency,
03:16but still trails in by nine.
03:18Look, at the end of the day,
03:19you know, as we said, he's a teenager.
03:21He's coming to Formula One
03:22with a lot of hype behind his name.
03:23And I think part of the issue last year
03:25was that pressure that was building up for him.
03:27So I think that they're very strategically doing that.
03:29They don't want to add
03:30any additional unnecessary pressure.
03:31He said himself,
03:32he's going to take it race by race.
03:34And you can tell that even the energy
03:35between him and George is very different.
03:37I mean, George,
03:38clearly, having been in F1 for a lot longer,
03:40walks into the garage,
03:41helmet on, so focused.
03:43I think the pressure's a bit high for him.
03:45Whereas Kimi, you think he knows now,
03:46he doesn't need to prove himself every moment.
03:49He's learning,
03:49but he's got an opportunity,
03:51so he doesn't want to waste it either.
03:52We had an hour and a half of practice
03:53that was extended
03:54because obviously he knew rules and regulations,
03:56which we'll get into in a few moments of time.
03:57But it was Charles Leclerc
03:58who was quickest.
03:59They've got loads of upgrades,
04:02as have McLaren.
04:04But Mercedes saving theirs for Montreal.
04:06Actually, they said they were managing
04:07a power unit issue on Kimi,
04:09so he didn't get a flying lap in mid-sauce.
04:11But he was still about level with his teammate,
04:15but both of them about seven and a half tenths off
04:17Charles Leclerc.
04:18Well, what's team's on the hards
04:19and George on the softs.
04:20So George with his own issues, clearly.
04:22Yeah, George was late out, wasn't he?
04:25And he was talking,
04:26it sounded like a train, didn't it?
04:28He was saying,
04:29but it sounded like a wastegate problem to me.
04:31So some gremlins in the Mercedes
04:33we haven't seen much of so far this season.
04:37But, you know,
04:38the track will be completely different
04:40when they go out again.
04:41The temperatures, the grip level,
04:43you can hear cars out on track.
04:45F2 have been out as well.
04:46So it's a magical mystery tour
04:48as soon as they head out of the pits.
04:50OK, let's just refresh your memory
04:52of what the championship looks like
04:54after three races and a sprint in China.
04:56And it is Kimi Antonelli
04:57that leads away by nine points
04:58from his teammate.
05:00Charlotte Clare is eight ahead
05:01of Lewis Hamilton.
05:03Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri
05:05in behind.
05:06Oli Baerman, the best of the rest
05:07outside of the top three teams.
05:09A fine start from the young British driver
05:12and from Haas as well.
05:13Pierre Gasly looking good.
05:14Max Verstappen less so,
05:16although he was second quickest
05:17and three tenths off Charlotte Clare
05:19in that hour and a half of practice.
05:21Looks like they have found some answers.
05:23He's a catcher.
05:23His teammate is on four points
05:25alongside Arvid Lindblad,
05:26who picked some up on debut.
05:28He hasn't added to them since.
05:30Aston Martin drivers rooted to the bottom.
05:32No upgrades, interestingly,
05:34for them this weekend.
05:35Mercedes lead the way in the constructors
05:38by 45 from Ferrari,
05:39who in turn are 44 ahead of McLaren.
05:42Right, so changes to the rules
05:44and regulations.
05:46Here is Ted with all you need to know.
05:51Three races into F1's new rule set
05:53was enough for the FIA,
05:54the sports governing body,
05:56and Formula One
05:57to make some changes
05:58to the technical regulations
06:00in order to improve some of the areas
06:02that drivers, teams, and fans
06:05felt could do with a little bit of help.
06:09Firstly, the FIA have given themselves
06:11the option of reducing the amount
06:13of battery charging allowed
06:14depending on the track.
06:16This will make the cars a bit slower
06:18than they were in the first three races,
06:20but not noticeably so.
06:26What it will help with
06:27is cutting down on the so-called super clipping,
06:30running the generator up against the engine
06:32when it's on full power
06:33to just a few seconds worth
06:35at various points around the lap.
06:39And they've maximized the rate
06:40at which that can be done.
06:42A sensible tweak many teams felt
06:43should have been in place
06:44from the start of the season.
06:47To avoid big differences
06:48in car speeds and potential accidents,
06:51the amount of extra boost button power punch
06:53has been limited to plus 150 kilowatts,
06:56about 200 horsepower.
06:58So still not bad
06:59and just enough to get overtakes done.
07:02But they might not be as easy
07:03as they were before,
07:04especially as the FIA
07:05can knock down a bit of battery boost
07:07in some parts of the track
07:09for safety reasons
07:10to avoid those massive differences
07:12in car closing speeds.
07:18Add to all that,
07:19the possibility of some cars
07:20getting dodgy starts
07:21looks set to be reduced.
07:23Here in Miami,
07:24they'll be testing a system
07:25on the cars
07:26that can detect a slow getaway
07:27after you drop the clutch
07:29and then give the driver
07:31an instant extra bit
07:32of electric power boost
07:33to help him off the line
07:34and up to speed.
07:36And finally,
07:37a few tidy-ups
07:38concerning the formation lapse
07:39so drivers don't start
07:40with zero battery allowance,
07:41a bit more leeway
07:42on how many tracks
07:43the FIA can lower
07:44the energy limits on
07:46and some provisions
07:47for better safety and visibility
07:48in wet weather conditions
07:49that we haven't seen yet this season.
07:52So there the changes.
07:54Not a huge deal,
07:55but a package
07:55all the teams and drivers
07:56have agreed on
07:57to improve performance,
07:59consistency and safety.
08:05Martin,
08:05do you like what they've done?
08:07Yeah,
08:07they've got to smooth
08:08the power out,
08:09power delivery.
08:09You've got the battery,
08:11you've got the engine
08:12and the combination
08:14of those two
08:14is 1,000 horsepower.
08:16So what they've done
08:17is a lot of common sense
08:18of, you know,
08:19let's not have too much power
08:20in one place
08:21and run out in another.
08:22So they've just
08:23equaled it out
08:24a little bit more
08:25around the track.
08:25There's more work to do here.
08:27One of the main gripes
08:28was that we weren't
08:29getting flat out qualifying.
08:31I know this is
08:32an energy rich track
08:33so we probably,
08:34maybe that masks
08:35it a little bit here,
08:36but it looks like
08:36they've got that sort
08:37of analytics for this track.
08:39Yeah,
08:39well that's a tricky thing.
08:40I mean,
08:40we've only had three races
08:41this season so far
08:42and some of those circuits
08:43are anomalies
08:44on the calendar
08:45and so we've taken
08:46that set of data
08:46to make these changes.
08:47But as you say,
08:48the circuit lends itself
08:49with hard braking corners
08:51to recharging.
08:52So it might look better here
08:53than it might look
08:54at some other circuits
08:54down the line,
08:55but they've taken a step
08:56in the right direction.
08:57The drivers will be more
08:59flat out now in qualifying.
09:00We hope to see that happening
09:01because drivers just want
09:03to go out there
09:03and be flat out.
09:04It's so, you know,
09:04against what we're used to doing
09:06to be lifting and coasting,
09:07particularly in qualifying.
09:08You don't want to ever see that.
09:09It might be a bit easier here
09:10to be at full power,
09:12but I think the most important thing
09:13is that they learn from this race
09:14and take that to all the other tracks
09:16because it's very easy for them
09:17to adjust the megajoules
09:18that they're allowed to use
09:19so we can have great qualifying.
09:21And from looking at practice,
09:22it looked like we were getting,
09:23you know,
09:24them braking very late
09:25and that's why we had
09:26so many issues with locking up.
09:27They haven't driven
09:28these cars like that before,
09:29so they're learning new things
09:30about these cars here in Miami.
09:32Completely agree.
09:32I was out trackside,
09:33as you know,
09:34in several spots
09:35and the cars are great.
09:37They've been moving around,
09:38the drivers having to jockey them,
09:39having to stay on top of them.
09:41They looked absolutely fine
09:42out there today.
09:43Okay, let's go to the Skypad.
09:45Karun is there.
09:45I think he's going to have a look at
09:47Lewis' lap with the full display on
09:49so he can see exactly
09:50what the battery's doing, Karun.
09:54That's right, Simon.
09:55Let's take a look.
09:55This was Lewis Hamilton
09:56in a free practice earlier today
09:59and to Martin's point,
10:00it's great.
10:01Look at the drivers
10:02heading into Turn 1.
10:02They were all struggling.
10:03Watch Lewis' hands here.
10:04They're on the limit
10:05and this is one of the criticisms
10:07that was coming into the sport
10:10that the drivers looked
10:11like they were underdriving
10:12on the one lap in qualifying.
10:15But that's not the case here.
10:16We are absolutely seeing
10:17these drivers having to push out,
10:19having to hustle the car.
10:20Look at the Ferrari here
10:21through 4, 5, 6, 7, 8.
10:24This is where they've been brilliant
10:25against the opposition.
10:27Hamilton here just waiting,
10:29getting the front in.
10:30Now he's got the battery topped up
10:32because we've got a long straight
10:34running down here
10:35to Turn 11,
10:37just deploying all of the engine.
10:39Watch the acceleration.
10:40He's halfway down the straight
10:41and he's already over 200 miles an hour,
10:44210 miles an hour there.
10:45Now we do a bit of harvesting
10:46because he's got to think about
10:48the straight coming from 16
10:50in five corners time
10:52through this section.
10:54You've got to really underdrive.
10:56Don't kill the tires too hard,
10:58especially the rears on acceleration
11:00with all of that extra power
11:02and torque they've got
11:03with the electric motor.
11:04Out of 16.
11:05Now, remember I was saying
11:06he was completely empty
11:08as we went into Turn 11.
11:10That slow section has allowed him
11:12to pretty much top up the battery.
11:15You'll see it there
11:15when he comes onto that straight.
11:18Out of 16.
11:18It's pretty much like 95%.
11:20Picks up a little bit of stream.
11:22Now it deploys all that energy.
11:24And look at the speed.
11:25He's going to be up to 342 kilometers an hour
11:28before then we get a little bit of harvesting,
11:31jump on the brake.
11:32But look how hard it is.
11:33He can't get it stopped for the Apex.
11:35It just shows that that challenge
11:38that we wanted to come back to the drivers
11:41but they're struggling to slow the cars down,
11:43struggling to find that little precipice of grip
11:47and get the car into the Apex.
11:48That seems to have come back here this weekend,
11:51which is very exciting to see.
11:53Back to you guys.
11:55Yes, it is indeed.
11:56Thank you, Karun.
11:57Busy here, as I was saying,
11:59four weeks ago at the Miami Open Tennis
12:01in seven weeks' time.
12:03It will be the first game in the World Cup.
12:05They're hosting seven matches here
12:06at the Hard Rock Stadium.
12:07And when we return,
12:09one of the other big stories
12:10from the five weeks off.
12:14It's the end of one of Formula One's
12:16greatest partnerships.
12:17It's Max Verstappen
12:19and his race engineer,
12:20Gian Piero Lambiazzi.
12:22That's very rare, I think, in racing.
12:24You know, you don't see that often
12:25that a driver and an engineer,
12:27they gel that well together.
12:29And that's, of course,
12:30something that I'll have to try
12:31and find again.
12:42Welcome back.
12:43Now, as I mentioned before the break,
12:45one of the big stories
12:46in the enforced break
12:48that we had between the last race
12:50and this one was at
12:50Gian Piero Lambiazzi.
12:52Max Verstappen's loyal race engineer
12:54will be leaving Red Bull
12:56for McLaren in 2028.
12:58Here's Ted.
13:12It's the end of one of Formula One's
13:14greatest partnerships.
13:15Bittersweet or not,
13:17it's Max Verstappen
13:18and his race engineer,
13:19Gian Piero Lambiazzi.
13:20The duo that fight like brothers,
13:23but who fight to win.
13:25That's some gentle introduction.
13:26You guys give me this strategy, okay?
13:29I'm trying to rescue myself.
13:31It's quite impressive.
13:32I'm probably letting myself
13:32get on the car
13:33that's just completely erased.
13:36Sorry to be for a show on the rent.
13:39Slowly getting used to it, Max.
13:42That's perfection.
13:43Just perfection, Max.
13:44That is four in a row, Max.
13:47Congratulations.
13:48Well, like all good things,
13:50it's coming to an end.
13:51Because of his recent success,
13:54Lambiazzi's had a few offers
13:55from rival teams.
13:56Williams, it was even rumored,
13:58Aston Martin wanted him
13:59to be their next team principal.
14:00But in the end,
14:01the team that got him
14:02was the very team
14:04he spent the whole of last season
14:05trying to beat.
14:06Red Bull's most recent rivals,
14:09McLaren.
14:10We want the best of the best
14:11in every area.
14:12As a team,
14:13we believe there's an area
14:14that he can cover
14:15and a responsibility
14:16that he can improve
14:18within our team.
14:19He's obviously a great guy.
14:20He's someone who's achieved
14:21an incredible amount with Max.
14:23And I think it's a great opportunity
14:24for us to learn from someone new
14:26and someone that wants
14:27to join McLaren as well.
14:28That makes it even better.
14:29GP's position will be
14:30Chief Racing Officer.
14:32What that really means
14:33is that McLaren wanted someone
14:34with the cutthroat smarts
14:36of Red Bull Racing.
14:37Someone who wouldn't have let
14:38both McLarens get disqualified
14:40in Las Vegas last year.
14:41Someone who would have made
14:42the decision to pit both cars
14:44under the safety car in Qatar.
14:46and someone who would have
14:47stamped down on some of
14:48the inter-team tensions
14:49between Lando Norris
14:50and Oscar Piastri
14:51long before Papaya Rules
14:53ever got out of bed.
14:55All good so far for McLaren,
14:56but there is a catch.
14:58Lambiazzi is being held
14:59to the end of his contract,
15:00which runs to the end
15:01of next season,
15:02meaning McLaren can only
15:03get hold of him before 2028
15:05if a financial deal is worked out.
15:08He has a contract
15:09and we're going to respect that.
15:10Obviously, in conversations
15:12with Red Bull,
15:13they need to, I presume,
15:15obviously, have a solution
15:17and then once and if
15:18that's in place,
15:19open to have a dialogue.
15:22But we're prepared
15:23to wait until 28
15:23and that's what we'll do
15:24if that's what ends up happening.
15:26At the same time,
15:27it's in Red Bull Racing's interest
15:29to keep GP out of McLaren's hands
15:31for as long as possible.
15:32So what does this mean
15:33for Red Bull Racing?
15:34Well, it's another key person
15:36lost to this pit wall.
15:37You had Christian Horner,
15:39then Adrian Newey,
15:40Helmut Marko,
15:41Rob Marshall
15:41and Jonathan Wheatley
15:43all gone
15:43and next it's GP Lambiazzi.
15:46In the post-Horner era
15:47here at Red Bull,
15:48you couldn't really describe it
15:49as a sinking ship
15:50but at the same time,
15:52they're not exactly
15:53keeping the band together.
15:54If we have lost
15:55so many people in the past,
15:56it also highlights
15:57how much of a talent factory
15:59this place is.
16:00He has had
16:01an extraordinary opportunity.
16:03We respect the fact
16:05that this sort of opportunity
16:07comes once in a lifetime.
16:09As much as it has been
16:10a news for you guys,
16:11it's something
16:11we've been discussing
16:12with him for a very long time
16:14and we only wish him well
16:16in that next phase.
16:18We want this place
16:19to be the one
16:20everyone wants
16:21to come to work to
16:23and we want
16:23our own people
16:24to have all the space
16:26to evolve in their careers,
16:27to get promoted
16:29and to move to the light.
16:31GP doesn't give interviews
16:32but as for why he's leaving,
16:34Jos Verstappen
16:35said the quiet part out loud
16:36in this social media reply.
16:39And the biggest question
16:40from Red Bull's point of view,
16:42does this mean
16:42Max is leaving too?
16:44The chemistry works really well.
16:45That's very rare,
16:46I think, in racing.
16:48You know,
16:48you don't see that often
16:49that a driver and engineer
16:50they gel that well together.
16:52And that's of course
16:53something that I'll have to try
16:55and find again.
16:57Time will tell.
16:58From his early days at Jordan
17:00alongside Peter Bonington
17:01to four world championships
17:03in a row
17:03with Max Verstappen.
17:05The engineer behind it all
17:06faces a fascinating next chapter
17:08in a very different team.
17:10You should go your own way
17:13Go your own way
17:17Hi, Zach.
17:18How are you?
17:19I'm good.
17:20Good signing.
17:21Now, during an intense grilling
17:22that I gave
17:24Lauren McKees earlier,
17:25he came out with this.
17:27Can you just have a quick listen?
17:28Oh, GP had an extraordinary
17:30opportunity, you know.
17:31He's going to be
17:32a team principal there.
17:34It's not something that
17:35I can do anything else
17:37than wishing him well.
17:41Team principal.
17:43He knows something
17:44I don't, apparently.
17:45I've got one
17:46and I've got a great one.
17:47I've got the best one
17:47in pit lane,
17:48Andrea Stella.
17:49So I couldn't be happier
17:50with Andrea.
17:52Maybe that was a little bit
17:53lost in translation,
17:54but what I would say is
17:56up and down the pit lane
17:57he's very highly regarded.
17:59Of course.
17:59Do you just see this
18:00as another coup?
18:01You're attracting
18:01the best people to McLaren.
18:03You know, my job as CEO
18:05is to get the best talent
18:07to think long term,
18:09to have the most strength
18:10on pit wall
18:11or at the factory
18:12and design,
18:13whatever the case may be.
18:14And so, you know,
18:16Andrea has done
18:17a fantastic job,
18:18our technical team,
18:20and GP's a huge,
18:21huge talent.
18:22So when the opportunity
18:23presented itself
18:24to strengthen
18:26and our racing team,
18:27that's exactly
18:27what we're going to do,
18:28whether it's a racing driver
18:29or an engineer
18:30or a strategist,
18:31whatever the case may be.
18:33So I'm very happy
18:33he's going to be joining us.
18:35Yeah, I think
18:36Jostra 7 was hugely unfair
18:38to say that he's only
18:38joining you
18:39because of the money
18:40because I think
18:41GP's a much deeper
18:42thinker than that.
18:43But 2028 is the date
18:45we're talking about.
18:46Can you get him earlier?
18:47What happens between teams
18:49and that negotiation?
18:50Yeah, you know,
18:52we know how this game works.
18:54You know,
18:54at some point
18:55it'll be probably uncomfortable
18:58having someone that you know
19:00going to a rival team.
19:01I know, you know,
19:02my general view is
19:04if someone wants to move on,
19:05you need to do it
19:06in a measured way.
19:07But if someone doesn't
19:09want to be at my team anymore,
19:10I've never been one
19:11that feels like people
19:14steal people from each other,
19:16drivers, sponsors,
19:17you know,
19:17you lose them
19:18or they have interest
19:19in something else.
19:21So 2028 is contracts through.
19:23We'll wait
19:24if that's what's necessary.
19:26If there's something
19:27to be done earlier,
19:28then of course
19:29we'd be interested.
19:30But I think right now
19:30we're all stuck in the 26.
19:32And there's obviously
19:32got to be firewalls
19:33between any knowledge
19:35that he passes to you
19:37or he might gain
19:38from McLaren in that time.
19:39Yeah, it makes things
19:41uncomfortable, right?
19:42If I had someone
19:43in my racing team
19:44that I knew was going,
19:45whether it's a racing driver,
19:46you see it in racing drivers,
19:48you hear about it
19:48with racing drivers.
19:50You know, when,
19:50you know, Lewis went to Ferrari,
19:52announced it early.
19:53At some point,
19:54Mercedes, you know,
19:56starts understandably
19:57cutting off knowledge
19:58that he might have.
19:59And that's just
20:00how the business works.
20:01So, yeah,
20:03we'll see how it plays out.
20:04We've got time.
20:04We know we're all settled
20:05for 26.
20:06So we'll chat about it
20:08when the time's right.
20:08I know you're very happy
20:09with your driver lineup
20:10as it is,
20:11but does it open up
20:11a pathway to Max
20:13further down the line?
20:14I couldn't be happier
20:15with our driver lineup.
20:16You know, Lando and Oscar,
20:17you know,
20:18not only are two awesome guys,
20:19you know,
20:20on the track,
20:20off the track,
20:21but as teammates,
20:23which is so much,
20:24I think,
20:24what's made McLaren
20:26successful here
20:27is the chemistry
20:27that we have
20:28in the garage,
20:29in the factory,
20:31with our pit wall,
20:32all throughout
20:33the racing team.
20:34So I couldn't be happier
20:35with what we have
20:36and zero intention
20:37in changing it.
20:38If a gap opened up
20:39in your team,
20:40would Max be top
20:41of the list?
20:42Well, he's an awesome
20:43racing driver,
20:44so if a gap opened up,
20:45that's a different conversation,
20:48of course.
20:49You know,
20:49when you see the talent
20:50that he has,
20:52yeah,
20:53and if you were looking
20:53for a racing driver,
20:55I think there's a lot
20:55of great racing drivers
20:57out there.
20:58Charles Leclerc's
20:58doing an amazing job.
21:00You know,
21:00it's great to see
21:00Lewis back on form.
21:03Kimi's doing a great job.
21:05George is a great driver,
21:06but, you know,
21:06look at what Kimi's doing here.
21:08You know,
21:08I almost kind of feel
21:09like he's the championship
21:09favorite sitting here
21:10at the moment,
21:12but we see how quickly
21:13things swing in this sport,
21:14but, yeah,
21:16I'm happy with what I've got,
21:17so I hope I'm not
21:18looking for a driver.
21:19Before we talk about
21:20what's going on on track
21:21and off track at the moment,
21:22just something else
21:22that you were very strong
21:23about a couple of weeks ago,
21:24I think when you're talking
21:25to Craig Slater,
21:26with regards to your old mate
21:27Toto Wolff
21:28and his interest
21:29in buying a stake,
21:30allegedly in Alpine.
21:32How do you feel
21:33about that kind of thing
21:34and like second teams,
21:35A-B teams,
21:36if you like?
21:37I don't like it at all,
21:38and it's not a Toto Mercedes
21:40thing at all.
21:41I think I've been saying this
21:42since I've been in the sport
21:43from day one.
21:45You know,
21:46whether it's co-ownership
21:47or A-B teams,
21:48you know,
21:49they have the ability
21:50and they have played by rules
21:53that are, you know,
21:54unfair from a sporting standpoint.
21:56We've seen kind of
21:56sporting violations.
21:58We've seen financial violations.
22:01We've seen IP violations.
22:02We've seen people
22:04getting passed back and forth.
22:05So I think, you know,
22:07we're the one sport
22:08and I get how we got here,
22:10but the sport is so healthy now
22:11that I don't think
22:13we need these collaborations.
22:15And so I think the fan wants to know
22:18that these are 11 independent teams.
22:20Clearly, we don't all make power units,
22:23so we do need to rely on power unit providers,
22:27but I think that's where it should stop
22:29and people should make their own gearboxes
22:30and you shouldn't be able
22:31to pass employees around
22:33because you've said that, you know,
22:34they've got IP in their head
22:36and it's, you know,
22:38sometimes you've got to write checks
22:39to get people
22:40and if they're in the same team,
22:41you don't.
22:42So I just think it clouds
22:44and creates a lot of conflicts
22:46and compromises the integrity
22:49of kind of sporting fairness.
22:51But this is interesting
22:53because Toto Mercedes
22:55provides you with a power unit.
22:57Does he ever sort of get older
22:58and go like,
22:59Zach, behave yourself.
23:00You're making life difficult for me.
23:02No, no.
23:03You know, quite the opposite.
23:04You know, last year,
23:06you know, I know Helmut made a comment
23:08that, you know,
23:08when Kimi went off,
23:10you know,
23:11with that crucial point.
23:14In Qatar, yeah.
23:15In Qatar.
23:16He wasn't going to let us by.
23:17We didn't ask to let him by.
23:19Like, we're all racing.
23:20So I think our relationship
23:22with Mercedes has been awesome.
23:24It is strictly a power unit.
23:27We're independent.
23:28They've never asked us to do anything.
23:29We don't ask them to do anything
23:31and we don't count on it.
23:33So when we came up on Kimi,
23:34we almost thought, like,
23:36he's going to be as tough
23:37as anyone to get past.
23:39And that's the way it should be.
23:40He got a lot of upgrades.
23:42Almost an entirely new car
23:43here in Miami.
23:45Why are you expecting you
23:45pleased with what you've seen
23:46so far on track?
23:48And, I mean, actually, Lando,
23:49if Alex hadn't got in the way,
23:50he would have looked
23:50pretty quick as well, wouldn't he?
23:52Yeah, so far so good.
23:53I think everyone back at the factory
23:55has done a great job.
23:56You know, upgrading our cars
23:58has become a bit of a specialty
24:00here in the last couple of years.
24:02Ferrari look like they have
24:03a very fast car.
24:04They've brought even more upgrades
24:05than we have.
24:06Of course, Mercedes,
24:08I still think is the favorite.
24:10They're quite composed.
24:11But I think what's great
24:12is it feels to me like
24:13the grid's going to start
24:14closing up a little bit.
24:16So I feel like we'll take
24:17a step forward this weekend
24:19when, you know,
24:20the truth will come out here
24:21in about a half an hour.
24:22I know.
24:23I've seen you flat out
24:24with your partner's sponsors,
24:26I would have called them,
24:26in the past.
24:27But what was the feedback
24:29from Lando and Oscar
24:31with the regulation changes
24:32for this weekend
24:33after the first session?
24:34Definitely a step
24:35in the right direction.
24:37You know, I think we need
24:37to recognize that
24:39the regulations are very young.
24:41They're only going to get better.
24:42These engineers
24:43are extremely smart.
24:46The racing's been good.
24:47And Dre and I have
24:47spoke about on Pit Wall.
24:48And you go like,
24:49that's been an epic battle
24:51between Charles and Lewis
24:52or the start of,
24:53you know, Australia.
24:54I can't remember
24:55the last time you had
24:56a lead swap three,
24:57four, five times.
24:58At the same time,
24:59I'm sympathetic to,
25:00you know, you've raced.
25:01I've been in race cars.
25:03I don't know if you've
25:03been in race cars.
25:04Maybe you have.
25:07That you have to drive
25:08these cars a different way.
25:09I'd like to think
25:10we're going to end up
25:11with the best of both worlds,
25:12which is smoothing out
25:13this technology.
25:14I think this weekend
25:15is a step in the right direction.
25:17And we're going to put on
25:18a great show
25:19with awesome race cars
25:21that are the fastest race cars
25:22in the world.
25:23And we just need to remember
25:24we're three races into it.
25:25Thank you, Zach.
25:26Pleasure.
25:27As always,
25:28have a good weekend.
25:29We wish you the best of luck.
25:30We're going to go
25:31to the other side of the garage
25:31because Rachel is there
25:32with Ted and Karoo
25:33to have a look
25:34at some of these upgrades.
25:35We are indeed, Simon.
25:36Thank you very much.
25:37We're down here
25:37at McLaren at the moment.
25:39Shibuzi,
25:39he of the Barsohn,
25:40has just been here
25:41having a very close look
25:42at the McLarens.
25:43But now a lot of work
25:44going on, Ted, right now.
25:45Yeah, I mean,
25:46take a look at this.
25:47The crucial upgrade,
25:48if we can see it
25:49and it's just being worked on,
25:50is actually the floor
25:51because that generates
25:52an immense amount
25:53of downforce
25:54and efficient downforce.
25:55And this streak of paint,
25:57this fluorescent paint
25:59on the floor here,
26:00Rachel,
26:00sends its own message
26:02and tells everybody
26:03what they've been doing
26:04in practice,
26:04which is putting
26:05aerodynamic flowvis paint
26:06on bits of that floor
26:07to prove that it works.
26:09So it works so far.
26:10Oscar's car,
26:11they're just getting ready.
26:11Landos,
26:12they've just dropped down.
26:13All looks good.
26:14But the upgrade's
26:14not so bad
26:15on that McLaren.
26:16You've got to ask though,
26:17Karun,
26:17is this the car
26:18they should have had
26:19since the start of the season?
26:20Yeah,
26:21but shoulda,
26:21woulda,
26:21coulda.
26:22I think,
26:22you know,
26:23the reality is
26:23they wanted to get
26:24a baseline
26:24on the power unit side.
26:26You know,
26:27as Zach just said there,
26:29they're not a works team.
26:30You know,
26:30they were reliant
26:31on Mercedes
26:32and I think
26:32they prioritized
26:33trying to learn
26:34and understand
26:35about the characteristics
26:37of how to make
26:37these new power units work
26:39before then
26:40they develop
26:41the chassis side of it.
26:42So I think
26:43it's a logical step
26:44they've taken
26:45by not being
26:46a works team.
26:48Every team,
26:49apart from Aston,
26:50have brought
26:50some sort of upgrade
26:51even if it's just
26:51the one singular one
26:52for Haas.
26:53Mercedes have brought
26:54upgrades,
26:54but Kimi's session
26:55interrupted,
26:55Tev.
26:56What can you tell us
26:56about that?
26:56They've brought,
26:57Mercedes have brought
26:58the most tiny upgrades
26:59you could possibly.
27:00One that's about
27:01three centimeters long.
27:02It's a little winglet
27:03next to the exhaust pipe.
27:04It could be so important,
27:05you never know.
27:06But this has really
27:08been a very busy
27:09lunch break Miami time
27:10for Mercedes
27:11because there was
27:12a battery anomaly
27:13on Kimi Antonelli's car
27:15that cut short
27:16the end of his
27:17free practice one.
27:18So they've had to
27:19take the power unit
27:19apart,
27:20change the battery.
27:21It's a fresh battery
27:22in there right now
27:23and they've just
27:24put the car back
27:24together again.
27:25So yeah,
27:26big job for the mechanics.
27:28Yeah,
27:28and on the George Russell
27:29side,
27:29he was struggling a lot
27:30with front locking,
27:31didn't he?
27:31We saw him heading off
27:32into the runoff area
27:33turn one several times.
27:35He's had to do a lot
27:36of work to try
27:37and understand
27:37from the setup
27:38and the systems
27:39how they could try
27:40and help themselves
27:41with that.
27:42Red Bull,
27:43we saw Max up there
27:43further up in the times.
27:44Lando didn't get his time
27:45in,
27:46bit blocked by Alex
27:46or it looked like
27:47you're on track.
27:48They've got a lot
27:48of upgrades.
27:49Ted,
27:49who's brought the most
27:50upgrades?
27:50Who needs for them
27:52to work the most
27:52today if you like?
27:53McLaren 7,
27:54Red Bull 7,
27:56Ferrari 11 upgrades.
27:57So to answer your question,
27:59Ferrari,
27:59they've got the most
28:00approved in this
28:01sprint qualifying
28:01coming up.
28:02Great,
28:02back to you,
28:02Simon.
28:06Thank you all.
28:07Very good.
28:08Shabuzi is in the house,
28:10Setson Button's
28:11favourite artist.
28:12We've got 17 minutes,
28:14just over 17 minutes
28:15to go until the start
28:17of sprint qualifying
28:18as that man,
28:20the championship leader,
28:20Kimi Antonelli,
28:21looks to repeat the feat,
28:23get sprint pole again
28:24as he did last year.
28:33A bit of encouragement
28:35for Max Verstappen
28:36in the opening
28:36practice session,
28:37the only practice session,
28:38three tenths off Charlotte
28:39at the top of the time
28:40sheets,
28:40Lando Norris was down
28:42in seventh,
28:43but as I mentioned to
28:43Zach,
28:44he didn't actually get
28:45a full lap in
28:46because he was impeded,
28:48but McLaren looks like
28:49he's got pace
28:49along with the Ferrari.
28:51Let's go to the skypan,
28:52Karuna's hot-footed it
28:53from the pit lane
28:54to give us some
28:55qualifying pointers.
29:00Hot-footed is absolutely
29:01the right word, Simon.
29:02It is baking out here
29:03in the sun.
29:03Let's take a look
29:04at the first corner.
29:05Lots of people
29:06struggling with lockups.
29:07George Russell was one
29:08of them on several
29:09occasions there
29:10on board,
29:11the Aston Martin
29:12here as well.
29:13Similar to a situation
29:14where you've got
29:15a few bumps.
29:16Lewis Hamilton here.
29:17Let's go back,
29:18I'll show you.
29:18This, you can see,
29:20just riding on board,
29:21he has a lockup
29:21on the outside tyre.
29:23Now, this is pretty
29:24unusual because
29:24that's a loaded tyre.
29:26But I think because
29:26we've got some slight
29:27bumps in the road
29:28and also some slight
29:29elevation changes,
29:31we're seeing a lot
29:31of drivers struggling
29:32with getting the car
29:34slowed down.
29:34It was a slight tailwind
29:36during the first
29:37and only free practice
29:38earlier,
29:38so we'll see
29:39if that has affected
29:41things because the wind
29:41has died down here.
29:42Now, the chicane turned
29:44at 14 and 15,
29:45really tricky.
29:46Weird cambers as well
29:48for the drivers
29:48to contend with.
29:49Lewis there struggling
29:50a bit with the rear
29:51of the car,
29:52riding on board
29:53with the Red Bull
29:54as well.
29:54You see as he turned
29:55in here,
29:56just bouncing off
29:57the kerb.
29:58The compliance
29:58not quite as good
29:59for Verstappen.
30:01Kimi Antonelli
30:02in the Mercedes,
30:03he chose on this lap
30:04to try and muddle
30:06his way through.
30:06There were other laps
30:07where he went straight
30:08over the kerbs
30:09and the hats
30:10of Esteban Ocon
30:11did that just there,
30:12going straight on.
30:13So a few drivers
30:14struggling on.
30:15Charles Leclerc
30:15turned 16.
30:16Now, he got incredibly
30:18close to the wall.
30:19We saw Oscar Piastri
30:20touch the wall
30:21later on.
30:22This was perfect
30:23in the words
30:24of Jenson Button,
30:25one centimetre away
30:26from the wall.
30:27Turn 17,
30:28a really tricky
30:29braking zone
30:30for a lot of drivers
30:31as well.
30:31Not quite as bad
30:32as Turn 1,
30:33but Lando Norris
30:34had traffic
30:35and this could be
30:35a problem,
30:36particularly in SQ1
30:38when we have
30:39all 22 cars
30:40on track.
30:41The drivers
30:41and their engineers
30:42have really got
30:43to keep an eye
30:44for who's coming
30:45behind them
30:45on that long straight
30:46from 16 to 17.
30:48Ted, what have you got?
30:49Thank you very much,
30:50Karun,
30:50still in the pit lane
30:51mopping up
30:51a load of other stories.
30:52Gotta say,
30:53with the upgrades
30:54to the Alpine,
30:55already Alpine
30:55fighting Red Bull
30:56for the midfield,
30:58Alpine have been
30:58very, very quick
30:59round here so far.
31:00Pierre Gasly,
31:018th,
31:01and Franco Colopinto,
31:0211th,
31:03and sandwiching them,
31:04that man,
31:05Carlos Sainz,
31:06he was 10th
31:06in free practice one
31:07with Alexander Alvin
31:09as teammate here
31:09at Williams 12th.
31:10So while they might
31:11not have taken much
31:12weight out of the car,
31:13they have added
31:14some performance
31:15and some downforce.
31:16So a nice upgrade
31:17for Williams,
31:18good job for them,
31:19and it looks like
31:19they are back
31:20in the hunt
31:21in the midfield.
31:22Let's take a look
31:22at the preparations
31:23as we can
31:24for Ferrari.
31:25I think they expect
31:26quite a lot.
31:27Just had a word
31:27with Fred Vasseur,
31:28not giving too much away,
31:29but I think he's thinking
31:31that they can get
31:32towards the front row,
31:33maybe even get one car
31:34on the front row,
31:35be up there
31:36with Mercedes,
31:37then see what happens
31:38in the sprint race.
31:39A little bit of a work
31:40on the back
31:40of Charles Leclerc's car,
31:41but he seems to be
31:42the quicker Ferrari
31:43at the moment.
31:44Hamilton's still making
31:45setup changes
31:46as he was ending
31:47free practice one.
31:48Take a look
31:49at Isaac Hadjar's car,
31:50though.
31:50I mean,
31:51he was quick
31:51in free practice one,
31:53the only practice session
31:54we had,
31:54in fact,
31:55with Max Verstappen
31:57second,
31:58and Hadjar was there
31:59or thereabouts,
32:00but he's still got
32:00a lot of work
32:01going onto his car.
32:03Hadjar was ninth
32:04while Verstappen's car
32:05all ready to go.
32:06So that is the scene
32:07down here,
32:07Simon in the pit lane.
32:09George Russell
32:09really needs a big weekend.
32:11He really needs
32:12a sprint pole position
32:13and then potentially
32:14a win to get back
32:15in some momentum
32:16against Kimi Antonelli,
32:17who's looked so good
32:18so far.
32:19Leclerc,
32:20quickest in free practice one,
32:22ready to go.
32:22The McLaren's up there
32:23as well.
32:24It's anyone's guess
32:25who's going to end up on top.
32:29It is.
32:30And that man there,
32:31as you said,
32:32I mean,
32:32he could quite easily,
32:33got a little bit unlucky,
32:34could have won in Japan,
32:35but calm,
32:36as always,
32:37takes everything
32:38in his stride,
32:39doesn't he?
32:39Yeah,
32:39you can never really tell
32:41what's going on
32:41in the mind of Oscar Piastri,
32:42whether he's super excited
32:43or very upset
32:44is kind of always
32:45the same reaction and face,
32:46but I think he's out
32:48with the vengeance,
32:48you know?
32:49I mean,
32:49after last year,
32:49I think for a long part
32:51of the season,
32:52we thought it was going
32:52to be his title to win
32:53and unfortunately,
32:54at the end,
32:54it wasn't the case.
32:56Still a lot of opportunity
32:57this year to claim it,
32:58though,
32:58so I think he's got to
32:59keep it putting in performances
33:00like he did in Suzuka
33:01and things will be promising.
33:03What would he have taken
33:04from that,
33:04actually,
33:04Jensen,
33:05thinking about what happened
33:06to him last year
33:07and it falling away?
33:08How much will he have learned
33:09from it?
33:09Do you think he's the kind
33:10of driver that will
33:11actually use it
33:12to his advantage
33:13and come back stronger?
33:14Yeah,
33:15I think we always talk
33:16about it,
33:16don't we?
33:16You know,
33:17you only learn
33:17from the mistakes
33:19that you make
33:19and the difficult situations
33:20you find yourself in
33:22and he definitely found himself
33:23in that at the end of the year.
33:24It's a horrible feeling.
33:26But he came out
33:26so strong at the start
33:27of the year,
33:28obviously he had the issue
33:29in Melbourne,
33:29but the speed was there
33:30and I think that
33:31the last race
33:32he probably would have won
33:33if we didn't get unlucky
33:35with the safety car.
33:36As we have a look
33:36at Kimi Antonelli
33:37getting into the car,
33:39as you said,
33:39you know,
33:40when you're at a track
33:41that you know
33:42you've done well at before,
33:43you know you've taken
33:44a sprint pole,
33:45I mean,
33:45it's got to help
33:46and we talk about it
33:46all the time
33:47but with the kind of
33:48form that he's in
33:49at the moment,
33:50if they fix what
33:51they needed to fix,
33:52they were troubleshooting
33:53towards the end of that
33:53which is why he didn't get
33:54a lap in as we said
33:55at the start of the show,
33:56then he could be
33:57in a good position here
33:58because he looked strong
33:58on the heart.
33:59Yeah, look,
34:00it was obviously
34:00a little bit unfortunate
34:01for him but I think,
34:02you know,
34:02when we're in,
34:03you know,
34:04the sets of regulations
34:05we have right now,
34:05there's a lot of additional
34:06stuff going into the car,
34:07a lot of additional software
34:09and it just kind of
34:10opens up opportunities
34:11for little niggles
34:11to come in like that.
34:12I hope for him
34:13that they've sorted it out
34:14but I have to say
34:15I was in the car
34:16with Kimi yesterday
34:17and he,
34:18honestly,
34:18he was on the limit,
34:19he's full of confidence
34:21and I think we'll see
34:21a big performance.
34:22You're not a very good
34:22passenger, are you?
34:23I'm a terrible,
34:24you'll see that tomorrow
34:26on Sunday,
34:26I think.
34:27Terrible passenger.
34:29For me,
34:29this is exciting
34:30because watching practice,
34:32I don't think anyone
34:32really maximized the car,
34:34they all were pushing hard,
34:35making mistakes here
34:36and there.
34:36So,
34:37it is anyone's.
34:38You'd say Charles
34:39has the advantage
34:40because he's got a lap
34:40together but there's
34:41seven drivers I think
34:42that can really fight
34:43for this pole position.
34:44And that's the good thing,
34:45isn't it?
34:45I mean,
34:45it's going to be
34:46a development war
34:47as we said
34:47and it looks like
34:48Ferrari have gone away,
34:49learnt,
34:49they've got the Macarena
34:50in that,
34:50that is confirmed
34:51from Fred in the interim.
34:53Oh,
34:53we're going to get to see
34:54a little bit of a Macarena.
34:55Not from you though,
34:56Simon,
34:56thankfully.
34:57The Macarena
34:57from Red Bull,
34:58they're not calling it.
34:59Yeah.
34:59Have a look at the Red Bull
35:00if you haven't joined,
35:01if you haven't joined us
35:02for practice
35:03a little bit early,
35:04it's absolutely unbelievable.
35:05They've got their own
35:06version of it
35:07but Mercedes
35:09uncharacteristically
35:09were struggling.
35:11They've locked out
35:11the front row
35:12for every race
35:13this season.
35:14Can they do the same
35:15for the sprint
35:16here in Miami?
35:18Not far away
35:19from finding out
35:20Miami sprint qualifying
35:21is next.
35:23Don't go anywhere.
35:28Let's keep watching.
35:30I go work
35:32like a boxer
35:33train the brain
35:34and aim it.
35:34I'll fuck you
35:35like a punch.
35:36My rhyme rocks you
35:37sometimes in noxion
35:38so hard to stop you.
35:39Dang your track
35:39so hard to slap you.
35:41You can't react
35:41you're flattered.
35:42You're back down
35:43for the count.
35:43Get up and dismount
35:44because I'm coming with
35:45an endless amount of rhymes
35:46and I'll hurry
35:47like a slurry.
35:48I'm too large
35:48and camouflage
35:49the power punch
35:50but don't worry.
35:50Knowledge is an antidote.
35:51I got hands in smoke
35:52right now.
35:53Sweet and light
35:53with insight
35:54I wrote rhymes
35:54on a level
35:55so you can't relate
35:55unless you're telling you
35:57we'll stay away
35:58and punch you.
35:59You won't seem to have to be
36:30ДИНАМИЧНАЯ МУЗЫКА
37:01Well, we're back, everyone.
37:03Welcome along to Formula One in 2026
37:06as we resume this season after a longer break
37:09than we really wanted from a sporting context.
37:12It's round four of this season, and we've reached Miami.
37:15And as a special treat for you all,
37:16not one but two races this weekend
37:18because it is sprint weekend around the Hard Rock Stadium.
37:21This 3.36-mile track with 19 laps to come
37:25in tomorrow's sprint race.
37:27There are 19 corners, 12 to the left, 7 to the right,
37:31and a top speed of about 210 miles an hour.
37:34Last year, the youngest ever pole sitter
37:37in any format in Formula One was Kimi Antonelli.
37:41But he didn't get a soft-tire run in in practice.
37:44He hasn't simulated qualifying this year.
37:47He's relying a bit on his instincts from last year.
37:49If he's going to repeat that pole position,
37:51it looks great.
37:52Down by the seaside, it looks even better.
37:54About 16 miles to the north of South Beach,
37:58where we're sat and waiting for the action to begin.
38:01And Red Bull and Ferrari and McLaren
38:04have bought big upgrades for this weekend.
38:06Mercedes leaving their big upgrade package
38:09on the next one until Montreal.
38:11More things for certain, Martin.
38:12That's closed the field a bit.
38:13So, unquestionably, yes, they look very close.
38:15We didn't see the full potential of Mercedes,
38:17as you said, in the extended one-and-a-half-hour
38:20only practice session of the weekend.
38:22But now we'll find out what they've got.
38:25But it's so hot out there.
38:26The track temperature is still well over 50 degrees.
38:29And there's been a lot of action on track as well
38:32with Formula 2 and other support races.
38:35That will have changed the nature of grip.
38:37That will increase the grip of this temporary racetrack.
38:40So the drivers will have to go out,
38:43find out where it's at,
38:45how much grip there is, and drive to it.
38:48And they don't get too many chances
38:49with the way that the tyres work
38:51in the sprint qualifying.
38:53You can't afford a big lock-up
38:55or a spin or a big mistake.
38:57And talking of mistakes, you were on trackside,
38:59you were seeing the cars up close and personal.
39:01We were watching from the commentary box.
39:03The tweaks that have been made
39:05since we last went racing
39:06still seem to give us
39:08some proper drivers on the limit,
39:10some proper drivers on the edge,
39:11and some proper mistakes being made.
39:13Yeah, there's a surplus of power over grip
39:16in quite a lot of areas on the track.
39:17And we've definitely smoothed out the power delivery
39:21with the latest changes.
39:22There'll be more to come as well.
39:24But, wow, they don't have to take off
39:26out of a corner.
39:27And that's in the dry.
39:28A lot of drivers, if it is wet on Sunday,
39:30if it is wet, and it's forecast,
39:33we are going to see some chaos.
39:36I'll be a lot happier to be in the commentary box
39:38than pressing the throttle
39:40because they've got so much instant power
39:42and torque with the battery
39:44and the engine, if you like, as well.
39:48But, anyway, that's irrelevant
39:49because right now it's bone dry,
39:51it's hot, and it's sprint quality.
39:53Charles Leclerc will be hoping
39:55it isn't wet tomorrow as well.
39:56If you remember back to the sprint race last year,
39:58he didn't even make it to the grid.
40:00It's hosed it down just before the start,
40:02and he crashed on his lap to the grid.
40:05He was the fastest driver in practice earlier today,
40:09second time this season.
40:10and he's been fastest in the FP1 session.
40:12Right.
40:13We're ready for sprint qualifying.
40:15We've got green lights.
40:16Ted Kravitz, let's get going.
40:17It's about time, isn't it, Crofty?
40:19Let's be honest.
40:20Four and a half weeks since we left Suzuka, Japan,
40:22it's about time.
40:23And all these racing drivers,
40:24they've been doing the strangest things in the break,
40:26haven't they?
40:26Going to music festivals with Valtteri Bottas,
40:29bumping into Daniel Ricciardo
40:30at the same music festival as Valtteri Bottas.
40:33Lewis Hamilton was there with a young friend.
40:35Don't know if you saw, but...
40:36Went to see Justin Bieber.
40:38He did.
40:38He did, with a friend called Kim.
40:40Or even going to watch some sport called football,
40:42if you're Pierre Gasly.
40:44PSG, they did quite well.
40:46Anyway, this is what you really need to do.
40:48This is what they're here for.
40:49It's qualifying, and thanks to the rule tweaks,
40:51they're able to go more flat out
40:53than they have been in the first three races.
40:56And already we've got a bit of a standoff in the pit lane.
40:59Lots of engineers on pit walls
41:00seeing who's going to go out first.
41:02The track has been very dirty.
41:04It's been very dusty.
41:06So track improvement is going to be key.
41:08And that's why I think we've got a green light, Crofty.
41:10But I'm not seeing anybody out.
41:12They're all waiting for the first person to go out
41:14and clean the track up a bit.
41:16And here comes Oscar Piastri.
41:17Cue the stampede.
41:1912 minutes of this sprint qualifying session.
41:21The first part.
41:22All on the medium tyres.
41:23Track temperature, Martin.
41:25Nearly 54 degrees.
41:26I wonder if there's only a couple of laps in it.
41:28And that's why they're waiting a bit.
41:30Yeah, it could well be.
41:31They've all got the same idea.
41:32It was Lando who was just pulling out of the pit.
41:33But both McLarens will be on the track.
41:37There they are.
41:38Line astern.
41:39And it always seems silly, doesn't it?
41:4222 cars.
41:44And traffic's an issue.
41:45So let's all go out at the same time
41:47because they've all got the same sort of knowledge, experience, algorithms, what have you.
41:52And also, they're a little bit hair-trigger as well, aren't they?
41:55One goes out and let's all get on the racetrack.
41:59So they'll sit down there.
42:01They can tick over for quite a long time.
42:03And drivers will trundle out of the pits when they feel like it,
42:08as long as they're not blocking too many others.
42:09And so just to remind you, in SQ1, Sprint Qualifying 1,
42:16you must use a new set of medium compound yellow marked tyres,
42:21the same for Sprint Qualifying 2,
42:24a new set and a brand new set of the red marked soft tyres for Sprint Qualifying 3.
42:29So that's what we're going to see.
42:31And that's why you can't afford mistakes.
42:34That is very true, has Oli Behrman in the hat.
42:37The highest driver in the championship outside of the three big teams,
42:42of Ferrari and of McLaren and of the championship leaders, Mercedes.
42:47Seventh place.
42:48It's been a brilliant start to the season for him,
42:50even despite the big crash, the 50G impact crash that he had in Suzuka during that race.
42:56Here's Kimi Antonelli trying to get out of the garage.
42:59But George decided he was going to go first.
43:03All the little psychological moments here between the two current championship contenders.
43:09Yeah.
43:11I think George is just of the view, right, I'm in a great position.
43:17I'm in the car that could win me a championship.
43:19I'm focused on that.
43:20My teammate is very good.
43:22He's going to push me all the way.
43:23But I'm happy and comfortable.
43:25That's from the outside.
43:26Quite how happy and comfortable he is on the inside, I'm not sure.
43:30Yeah, you know, Kimi had made some mistakes last year as a teenage rookie.
43:35But his pace in the final stint of the Japanese Grand Prix was enlightening, to say the least.
43:42Would have caught everybody's attention, not least George Russell's.
43:44It must be said, of course, that without the safety car, George would probably have won the Japanese Grand Prix,
43:50if not Oscar Piastri would have.
43:52It certainly wasn't going to be Kimi Antonelli.
43:54The safety car played into his hands very nicely.
43:57So we have to remember there are many factors to this.
44:00Yes, he might have been the fastest man on the track in and around that safety car.
44:03But even he admitted afterwards that it came at the right moment for him.
44:07It's not harmed.
44:08Lando Norris, the safety car here over the years, of course, that main win that he got here in 2024.
44:14I think it was McLaren's second win in only 11 seasons.
44:17They've had 20 wins since then.
44:19And he's setting off then on his first flying lap of this track.
44:23So, Martin, take us through from turn four onwards.
44:26Yeah, it gets really busy.
44:27Four, five, six, and seven, and eight at the bottom of the racetrack.
44:32It's like a snake, isn't it?
44:34Just relentlessly come at you, these corners.
44:37And it's a clumsy little tightening apex there.
44:40You ride the curve.
44:42Now it's flat out between the walls.
44:44As you head, it's effectively quite a long sort of mid-straight there.
44:49And you'll consume as much of your battery as you can get away with.
44:53Because now, in this little Mickey Mouse section,
44:56that's a place where you'll gain and lose a lot more time than in some of them.
45:01We've got somebody in trouble out on the racetrack as well.
45:05And a really tricky section.
45:07And a little hop, skip, and a jump over the chicane there.
45:11And it looks like Lance Stroll is stranded up against the wall in 16.
45:16Very easy to hit that.
45:17And then the long, and there is Lance Stroll then.
45:21So, unless he can get that running.
45:23And that is going to compromise.
45:25Lando Norris has to lift for that one as well.
45:28The orange flashing lights are saying it's a safety light stranded car.
45:33And that has absolutely compromised Lando Norris.
45:38Did it compromise Oscar Piastri behind him?
45:42Not quite.
45:43I would imagine not.
45:44The clock's still running, Oscar Piastri.
45:45Actually, I've just seen him come through.
45:47And he didn't look like he was going that fast.
45:49Worst possible time for Lando Norris to arrive on the scene there.
45:52Because he's already lifted.
45:54He's already backed off.
45:55And just as he gets to the corner, Lance Stroll's got going again.
45:58But that will mean another lap.
46:00But at least he's on the medium tyre.
46:02So, there should be more laps in it.
46:03But first chance kind of wasted through no fault of Lando Norris.
46:08You've just got to get into the top 16 in this session to get yourself going.
46:13Lewis Hamilton goes second fastest behind his teammate Charles Leclerc.
46:17SQ1 in China, by the way.
46:18Both Williams, both Aston Martins, both Cadillacs were knocked out.
46:22Let's see if it's the same this weekend.
46:23Well, once again, then, Lewis.
46:24About a third of a second shy of Charlie Leclerc in the other Ferrari.
46:28So, some work to do there.
46:30And Antonelli pops a really good lap time in.
46:33Yeah, only a couple of hundredths off Charles Leclerc.
46:36So, obviously, the muscle memory working well for him.
46:38And he was pretty rapid on the hard tyre a little bit earlier on.
46:42So, as I said earlier, didn't get the chance on the soft tyre.
46:45Here comes Max Verstappen.
46:47You'll notice, very briefly, the active aero activating on that red ball.
46:51Watch for that and the Ferrari.
46:53It's that 180-degree flip, Macarena, flippy, flappy wing.
46:57The red balls go so high.
47:00That's got to be the biggest gap we've ever seen in a rear wing.
47:03Yeah, it looks bizarre when it's flipping around the other side as well,
47:06when you're out on the racetrack.
47:08So, what happened to George Russell?
47:11We didn't see anything as such.
47:12Did he get caught up in yellow flags?
47:14But that's an alarming lap time for him in terms of slower than he would ideally want it.
47:21He's 1.1 off his teammate Antonelli.
47:23So, somewhere around that lap, there was a drama for George Russell.
47:27And this is car number 30, Liam Lawson.
47:31And that's a lock-up in the turn one.
47:33And Liam Lawson hasn't got a lap time on the ball
47:35because I think he dived straight back into the pit lane at the end of that lap.
47:38And this is Lance Stroll.
47:40Oh, and that massive lock-up.
47:43And why he found himself in the run-off area.
47:46Yeah, a front tyre like a 50-pence piece,
47:49if you know what a 50-pence piece looks like in the UK.
47:54And that's...
47:54I'd be surprised if he didn't go through the canvas with that one
47:57because it's such a high-speed and long lock-up.
48:00That rather looked like one of those mechanical problems under braking
48:04rather than driver error, to be honest,
48:06because it happened quite a long way back.
48:08Indeed, and the same with Liam Lawson
48:09because for your outside front,
48:12there's such cunning geometry on these cars now
48:16and unusual sort of setups
48:18that for your outside tyre to lock going into the corners,
48:24not that usual.
48:25But, of course, for Lance Stroll, it was the inside tyre.
48:27Steve McLaren's been out of sync with the rest here
48:29because they're on a flying lap.
48:31Lando Norris with a 30.1, pretty decent for the first sector.
48:35His teammate, Oscar Piastri, also on a flying lap
48:38and only 0.08 of a second outside a decent time
48:41that he needs, albeit slower, than Lando Norris.
48:45I haven't driven one of these things last year.
48:47I don't know how they see the kerbs with accuracy.
48:51Look, look, that's the sort of view.
48:53The human eye smooths out some of those bumps,
48:56but that is exactly the letterbox that they're looking through
49:00at those kind of speeds.
49:02And Norris flying again.
49:03This looking very, very good for McLaren.
49:06Certainly is.
49:07They might be a bit out of sync,
49:09but they need to get these banker laps in as well
49:11after their first laps were compromised.
49:13So far, so good.
49:15Big breaking point now for Oscar Piastri
49:17to try and pick.
49:18Lando Norris is on his way to the line,
49:21and this should be the fastest time of the lot,
49:22and is with a 1.28.7 by half a second from Charles Leclerc.
49:27Piastri's got his braking absolutely spot on too,
49:29and he makes his way now through turn 19,
49:31crosses the line and goes second fastest,
49:33half a second down on his teammate,
49:35who he's always beaten in a sprint qualifying here in Miami.
49:40That's a big statement from Lando Norris.
49:42Lance Stroll out, no time set,
49:45won't get through, of course, then to sprint qualifying too,
49:49but that's a huge statement for McLaren,
49:52their upgrades, and Lando Norris there.
49:57That's a really key moment in this season.
50:00Yes, Lance Stroll out, could be a mechanical issue,
50:04could be the 50-pence-piece-shaped tyre
50:06that he's got there as well,
50:07because you can't change your tyres.
50:09You get that one set for this qualifying session,
50:12of which there are now less than two minutes to go,
50:15and along with Lance Stroll,
50:17Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad in the racing bulls,
50:19Franco Colopinto, Fernando Alonso,
50:22his Aston Martin teammate, and Valtteri Bottas,
50:24they are the bottom six.
50:26Sergio Perez finds himself in 14th for a Cadillac team
50:30on home turf, tarmac, if you would rather,
50:34and if he can stay in 14th and get through to Q2,
50:37that would be some achievements for the newest team on the grid.
50:40We'll keep an eye on that.
50:41I don't know who does racing bulls livery,
50:43but I really like it.
50:45I think it was even better in Japan, actually, the white one.
50:47Yes.
50:48I really like that one.
50:49You don't like this one, do you?
50:50You think it looks like a high-vis shirt or something?
50:52Yeah, that was one sweet I heard.
50:54But I do like, I do, for me, the ultimate livery was Ayrton Senna
50:59in a day-glow-and-white McLaren, shall we say,
51:03with his bright yellow crash helmet.
51:05It was the most iconic colour scheme ever.
51:08Yes, I do prefer the Japanese version of the special livery,
51:12but it doesn't matter how it looks, needs to be fast,
51:15and for Lindblad and Lawson, it needs to be faster
51:17as Colopinto goes up, but still in that bottom six,
51:22and there are less than a minute to go for him
51:25and everyone else out there.
51:27Talking of Ayrton Senna, of course, May date, 1994.
51:30This is the anniversary of losing the wonderful and great man.
51:36We mentioned it earlier, in FP1, 32 years since that tragic weekend
51:40at Imolo, where we remember Ayrton Senna
51:43and Roland Ratzenberger as well.
51:45Roland, two fabulous drivers lost to us, sadly,
51:50at the Imolo racetrack.
51:52Arvid Lindblad down to the hairpin, the young rookie,
51:56the latest young rookie to enter into Formula One.
51:59He's made qualifying pretty special for him so far this season.
52:03Goes 12 fastest, could be enough to get him through
52:06into the next part of sprint qualifying,
52:08but it might be touch and go.
52:10Esteban Ocon moves up only in the 17th.
52:12He could find himself out.
52:13Sergio Perez is back in the garage.
52:16His qualifying's over.
52:17Ollie Bearman goes 10th fastest.
52:19That's good enough for him.
52:21Perez now is usurped by Nico Hülkenberg.
52:24George Russell crosses the line only in sixth place.
52:27Still miles off lap time-wise for George Russell.
52:30Look at that.
52:31Nine tenths off fastest.
52:33Isaac Hadja goes ninth fastest.
52:36Valtteri Bottas is on a personal best lap.
52:38Alex Albon's on a personal best.
52:39Nico Hülkenberg goes into ninth place.
52:42So Valtteri Bottas should be the next to cross the line.
52:45Comes over the line now, 20th, and he's out too for Cadillac.
52:49Ahead, though, of Alonso, who's on a lap,
52:51and Lance Stroll, who is definitely out.
52:53We're on board now with Gabriel Bortoleto.
52:55Pick your braking spot at the end of the fastest part of the track,
52:59and hope that you don't go too deep,
53:01but it was just a bit unstable under braking.
53:04Yeah, he was wrestling that one, wasn't he?
53:06And, well, if Lando Norris' time was a statement,
53:09so is Charles Leclerc right up there behind him.
53:12So at the moment, very much advantage McLaren and Ferrari.
53:16Let's see as Alex Albon goes over the line
53:18and doesn't make it through.
53:20No, he does make it through at the expense of Liam Lawson.
53:24It was Albon or Lawson who were the two that were scrapping away there.
53:29And, well, sadly for Liam Lawson,
53:33he is just the wrong end of a better lap from Alex Albon there.
53:37If both Williams went out in SQ1 in China,
53:41both Williams are through to SQ2 this weekend.
53:44Lance Stroll never sadly got going for him.
53:46Fernando Alonso also out.
53:48Aston Martin too slow as Charles again here in Miami.
53:53Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez also out.
53:56Riding on board here with Esteban Ocon into turn one.
53:59That is a major lock-up.
54:01Both.
54:01The entire front axle locked up there.
54:05Oh, dear.
54:05And we've seen a lot of problems at that corner in practice
54:08carrying on into this qualifying session.
54:11It's tough for the drivers because obviously a lot of the slowing down
54:14is done by the electric motor.
54:16So you don't get a completely linear sort of braking effect.
54:22But, yeah, the Aston Martin continue to be miles off the pace.
54:28Yeah, they've not progressed from the first phase of qualifying
54:30in any format this season.
54:31Both of their cars out.
54:32Perez and Bottas out.
54:34Excuse me.
54:35Ocon with that lock-up out.
54:36And Lawson just pipped by Alex Albon at the end.
54:40Joining the six, putting their feet up early.
54:49Welcome back to Miami.
54:51Second part of sprint qualifying coming up.
54:5330 degrees here as we edge towards 5 o'clock in the afternoon.
54:57Track temperature 54 degrees.
54:59The hot time in SQ1 coming from Lando Norris.
55:02Zach Brown's on the pit wall at McLaren, their CEO.
55:04That was a pretty impressive time from Lando.
55:08Although he had to do it on his second attempt.
55:09No fault of his because of those yellow flags.
55:12Yeah, Lando's been very strong since the first lap so far today.
55:16So, as you know, we've got to hit the reset button now and do it again.
55:20And, yeah, good to see McLaren's at the top.
55:22But let's see.
55:24Q2 here to come.
55:26Ferraris are right with you there, Zach.
55:27Were you sandbagging this morning?
55:29Because we're...
