As the 60-day deadline tied to Iran conflict tensions expires, Donald Trump signals urgency while resisting immediate congressional authorization. Speaking to reporters, Trump argued that past actions by other nations bypassed such approvals, calling the process “largely unconstitutional” in practice. He pointed to an existing ceasefire as a buffer, suggesting it provides extra time for decision-making rather than escalation.

However, the remarks raise fresh questions over executive war powers and legal boundaries. With pressure mounting in Washington, Trump now appears to shift tone, hinting Congress may ultimately need to weigh in as geopolitical risks remain unresolved.

00:00Why are you not seeking congressional approval to extend it?
00:03Because it's never been sought before.
00:05There's been numerous, many, many times, and nobody's ever gotten it before.
00:09They consider it totally unconstitutional.
00:11But we're always in touch with Congress.
00:14But nobody's ever sought it before.
00:16Nobody's ever asked for it before.
00:18It's never been used before.
00:20Why should we be different?
00:22You had a dead comm commander come in here yesterday.
00:25Was he briefing you on a different approach, options?
00:29What kind of options?
00:30How would it look different?
00:32I mean, do we want to go and just blast the hell out of them and finish them forever?
00:36Or do we want to try and make a deal?
00:38I mean, those are the options.
00:40Do you want to go blast the hell out of them and finish them forever?
00:43On a human basis, I prefer not.
00:45But that's the option.
00:46Do we want to go in there heavy and just blast them away?
00:51Or do we want to do something?
00:53They're a very disjointed unership, as you can understand, Peter.
00:56Very disjointed.
00:57I mean, they're not getting along with each other.
01:02And it puts us in a bad position.
01:04One group wants to make a certain deal.
01:07The other group wants to make a certain deal.
01:09Including the hardliners.
01:11The hardliners want to make a deal, too.
01:13Why wouldn't they?
01:14They have no Navy.
01:15They have no Air Force.
01:16They have no anti-aircraft.
01:18They have no nothing.
01:20You know, it's a very disjointed, unfriendly leadership, unfriendly to each other.
01:25They're not getting along.
01:27They're very, very confused by what's happened.
01:29Because essentially, most of their military has been wiped out.
01:33But we just had a conversation with Iran.
01:36Let's see what happens.
01:37But I would say that I am not happy.
01:39Their leadership is very disjointed, very argumentative with each other.
01:47They come back.
01:48One says one thing.
01:50One says another.
01:51They're very confused.
01:53Obviously, their country has been, frankly, decimated.
01:57Their Navy is gone.
01:58Their Air Force is gone.
02:00Many of their soldiers, unfortunately, are gone.
02:05They've got to come up with the right deal.
02:07At this moment, I'm not satisfied with what they're going to do.
02:10We have great respect for Pakistan and Islamabad.
02:15And tremendous respect for the Prime Minister and the Field Marshal.
02:18And they're working with us.
02:20They continue to work with us.
02:21But the trip is a very long one.
02:23And we're doing everything in terms of negotiating right now.
02:28Now, in terms of the negotiation telephonically, they've made strides.
02:34But I'm not sure if they ever get there.
02:39There's tremendous discord.
02:42There's tremendous – they're having a tremendous problem getting along with each other in Iran.
02:47The leadership is very disjointed.
02:50It's got two to three groups, maybe four.
02:53And it's a very disjointed leadership.
02:56And with that being said, they all want to make a deal.
03:00But they're all messed up.
