00:00The inspiration I get from walking is incredible. I get a lot of messages, and then there's Ethan Bernard.
00:08I mean, he's been doing this as well, and he has lost close to 200 pounds walking, working out,
00:16and now he has his big following and has decided to go walk with me and share some notes about
00:24what it takes to lose a lot of weight.
00:27So let's go for a walk.
00:47All right. Thank you for joining me, Ethan.
00:50You know, one thing about losing all this weight is you've got to lose the clothes.
00:57I basically have, the last few months, I've been just getting all new jackets and new clothes.
01:07I was size 6X, size 5X, and now I'm wearing 3 and I can get into 2.
01:14Wow. Yeah, see, I actually started at an 8X, and now I'm wearing a 5 and I can barely squeeze
01:21into a 4.
01:22I mean, it's hard to find clothes at 5 and 6X.
01:27Oh, yeah.
01:28But now that I can get 3X and 2X.
01:31You can start shopping a lot more places.
01:34Yes.
01:35I would have to go to, like, the big and tall shops.
01:39I had, like, a couple that I would do my go-to places.
01:44But now I could probably go into and find 3X store off the rack.
01:49And let me tell you something.
01:53And after not being able to actually look at clothes at a store, I went to the Mets team store
02:01this year
02:02and brought a couple of things at the team store at Citi Field.
02:05Right off the rack.
02:06And I would go past those clothes and say, oh, that looks nice.
02:10But I knew there was never anything that would fit me.
02:12And now I know that I can actually, hey, look, this, oh, 2X, 3X, oh, I can wear this.
02:18Yeah.
02:19I mean, it's a different feeling.
02:22No, I had a similar experience this year.
02:25You know, I was so big that I couldn't even go to the big and tall stores.
02:30But now I'm at the size where I can go into a big and tall store and actually shop for
02:34clothes in person
02:35and go into a dressing room.
02:36And doing that for the first time in years was just such a good thing.
02:42You know, you were telling me about this personal trainer you have, a military guy.
02:48Yeah.
02:48So the guy, so I'm partnered with a company called Jocko Fuel,
02:52and it was founded by a man named Jocko Willink, who is an ex-Navy SEAL commander.
03:01So he's like, it's really interesting because like on paper, he seems very intimidating.
03:09But what he's actually known for is his leadership skills and being like a compassionate and good leader,
03:19which is really interesting because you think a lot of these military people would be so intimidating and so rough
03:24on people.
03:25But you meet him, you know, he looks intimidating, but then you meet him and he's just a funny guy.
03:30I mean, that's, that's great.
03:32I mean, military always gets things done.
03:34That's the best thing about the military.
03:36They always get things done.
03:37I hear that Chris Pratt's also been involved in this company.
03:40Yeah, it's been, it's, oh man, that was the, I actually had an experience with Chris earlier this year.
03:48The president of Jocko Fuel told him about my journey, and then he messaged me and started talking about it.
03:57And so to get like, to start this journey, you know, starting sharing a journey like this in public, you
04:04know, you have no idea where it's going to go.
04:05One person could see it, a million people could see it.
04:08But to get a message from someone like him encouraging me to continue was pretty crazy.
04:15I mean, that's how Frank Walk started.
04:16We had a similar story with J.J. Watt.
04:19Yeah, wow.
04:19And that's how everything really got kicked started with doing J.J. Watt.
04:24And it's incredible that one of the best defensive players of all time, a lock Hall of Famer, once his
04:31eligibility comes up.
04:34Yeah.
04:35Now, what is your typical day like?
04:37Like, for me, it's just been walking.
04:40I started slowly with 5,000 steps, 10,000, 15,000.
04:47Lately, I've been at 20,000.
04:50Wow.
04:51That's amazing, man.
04:52I've been doing a solid 10,000, 11,000 a day.
04:56So, walking for me is only part of it, though, you know?
05:01Like, actually, when I decided, let me rack up a little bit.
05:07In January, I had gotten back up to 624 pounds.
05:12Oh.
05:12Not my heaviest, but still very heavy.
05:16And for the first five months of the year, I didn't move around at all.
05:22I didn't walk.
05:23I didn't go to the gym.
05:25I just basically...
05:26Yeah, you know, that's what happens.
05:28That's why the streak is so important to me.
05:30Yeah.
05:30You got to keep moving.
05:31You got to keep it going.
05:32You got to keep the habits.
05:34Absolutely.
05:34One day off leads to two days off.
05:37Next thing you know, it's your Joel Embiid.
05:39And you're load-managing it every other day.
05:46Yeah.
05:46So, up until May, I actually lost, like, 90 pounds.
05:50But it was all from just eating less.
05:54So, in May, I decided to start walking.
05:58I saw a video of someone talking about how if you walked 10,000 steps a day, you would lose
06:07weight really fast.
06:09So, literally, from not walking at all, I just started doing 10,000 steps a day.
06:18And that was kind of the beginning.
06:23You know, it's incredible.
06:25I...
06:27Let this fire truck go by, or this ambulance.
06:40Yeah, so I went through...
06:41When I was at my heaviest, which was at least 525 pounds, because that's as high as the scale went,
06:49at my doctor's office.
06:50Yeah.
06:52When I...
06:52And this is 2015.
06:56Yep.
06:57I couldn't walk more than, like, if I walk, like, 200 feet, I get winded.
07:02It was tough.
07:03Everywhere.
07:04Going to mech games was tough.
07:05Going to devil games was tough.
07:07And I couldn't, like, walk.
07:09I couldn't imagine it.
07:11But...
07:11Yeah.
07:12Now that I'm doing it every day, it's almost become...
07:16Like, when I'm on my own, I put in my earbuds, I'll either listen to some satellite radio, or I'll
07:23listen to an audible book.
07:25Yeah.
07:26And it just...
07:29It's actually become, like, a big part of the day, relaxing and getting this done.
07:36It's been incredible for me.
07:38No, that's awesome, man.
07:39You inspire me a ton, hearing you do 20,000 steps.
07:43Because, honestly, I mean, I go to the gym, and I do more than just walking.
07:48But I still have days where I struggle to reach my 10,000.
07:53You know?
07:55I've been very consistent with it this past three weeks.
07:58We've been hitting 11,000 a day because we came out here to train hard and work hard.
08:03But it's a lot on my body still.
08:05Have you felt that as you've lost more weight, the walking has become less taxing?
08:10Yes, yes.
08:11Though my feet sometimes feel the brunt of it, but...
08:16Oh, yeah.
08:16That's what I'm feeling.
08:18Occasionally, I would get, like, a hip pointer.
08:21But that goes away after about 10 minutes of resting.
08:25My knees don't hurt as much as they used to.
08:30Climbing hills and stairs.
08:33I'd look at a hill that was, like, a steep hill.
08:36And I would, uh...
08:39There's a way to get there without going up the hill.
08:41And I'd do everything I can to avoid a hill if I ever had to walk up the hill.
08:46Hills and stairs are the enemy.
08:47I'm now flying up hills now.
08:49And stairs, still don't love stairs.
08:50But I don't think anyone loves stairs.
08:53No.
08:55But it's not a deal-breaker anymore for me.
08:58Yeah.
08:59How about in the gym?
09:00Do you have any tips or frank on good workouts that, you know, you've never really lifted weights before?
09:05I think the thing with the gym is, honestly, having a coach or a trainer who really understands your capabilities.
09:18Because if you get a good coach, they'll understand what you're capable of better than you will.
09:22And they can kind of point you in the right direction.
09:25But I think the biggest thing is, is leaving your ego out of it at the gym.
09:31Because a lot of people who haven't lifted, they really want to, like, go in and push as much weight
09:36as possible.
09:37Yeah.
09:37I know people like that.
09:38And it's like, yeah, I know that, you know, people go to the gym, they want to, like, impress, impress,
09:45impress.
09:45They go all out, they go all out, they go all out.
09:48And eventually, they tire out and then they're back to square one.
09:55And then, yeah, yeah, that's the thing, man.
09:59Like, focusing on form and function and reps over pushing heavier weights, I think, is really what has made the
10:09training that I've been doing this past five months work so well.
10:12I mean, it's incredible.
10:13I mean, do you have any goals with your weight loss?
10:18Oh, yeah.
10:19Yeah, so, honestly, in terms of, like, the actual strength stuff, not really.
10:23You know, I want to be strong.
10:25But I don't care about, like, bodybuilding or powerlifting, you know?
10:29No.
10:31But, you know, I started at 660, and I'm very blessed.
10:34I'm 6'5".
10:35So I carry my weight decently well, even though I'm still very, very obese.
10:41My main goal on paper is to just be less than 300.
10:47That's a big one.
10:48You know?
10:49I'll tell you, it felt good when I went under the 300 a couple months ago.
10:53Yeah.
10:54It felt really good.
10:56You know, I have all this now extra skin hanging around.
11:00Oh, yeah.
11:01I've got to eventually figure out how to get that off.
11:04Yep.
11:05I mean, yeah, I was talking with my doctor this week about that, and he said with my size, he's
11:13estimating that I'm going to have between 50 and 60 pounds of loose skin to take off.
11:20Which seems insane.
11:23Yeah, my doctor said something similar that basically that I, to revisit in four months.
11:28Yep.
11:28But yeah, I think I could probably knock off, like, about at least 20, 30.
11:32Yeah.
11:33Well, that's the thing, too.
11:34Like, I'm trying not to take that account into the weight loss goal, right?
11:38No, no.
11:38Like, I want to get as low as I can without having it done.
11:43But when I do end up having it done, it's going to be a crazy drop.
11:47I know another thing for me is my diabetes.
11:50My sugar was 11.
11:52My A1C was 11, over 11.
11:55Now it's 5.4, which is actually normal.
11:59Yeah, you're not even pre-diabetic anymore.
12:01Yeah.
12:02So.
12:03I won that same battle recently, my friend.
12:05I'm no longer pre-diabetic either.
12:07Oh, that's great.
12:08Well, thanks for joining us, and good luck with your continued journey, and thanks for joining us.
12:15Yeah, it was awesome walking with you, Frank.
12:16And if I can do it, if he can do it, you can do it.
12:19Yeah, if we can do what we do at our size, imagine what y'all can do.
