00:01Tigers fans, as April draws to a close we're already more than a full month into the 2026
00:06season. One month may only be one-sixth of the schedule, but early trends start to harden quickly.
00:11Let's break down where the division races stand right now and what history tells us about what
00:16it could all mean when October arrives. Just a heads up, every stat below ignores the shortened
00:202020 campaign and focuses on full seasons for playoff and division impact, what it means to
00:25be in first, or last, place. Since 1996, the first full season with at least one wild card in each
00:33league after the strike-shortened 95 season was limited to 144 games. 88 of the 174 eventual division
00:41champions held at least a share of their division lead entering May 1st, that's 51% of all division
00:47winners, take note, Yankees, Tigers, Guardians, A's, Braves, Reds and Dodgers fans, those seven clubs
00:54are your division leaders, heading into May. Last season, just two of the six division winners held
00:59a share of their lead on May 1st. In the American League, the Mariners went on to win their division,
01:03while the Yankees and Tigers, who topped the AL East and AL Central, respectively, entering May,
01:13did not. Both still punched a ticket as a wild card. In the National League, the Dodgers won their division,
01:20but the Mets and Cubs, who led the East and Central entering May, did not. The Cubs still reach the
01:27postseason as a wild card. The Mets missed the playoffs entirely. Since 1996, 18 of the 29 World
01:35Series champions, excluding 2020, led their divisions entering May. The Dodgers did exactly that in 25 as
01:43referenced above. This year, the defending champion Dodgers are in first place entering May. How rare is
01:49that? Rarer than it sounds. Out of the 29 teams to win a World Series since 1996 and play the
01:56following
01:56April, the Dodgers are just the 11th to find themselves in first place through April the very
02:01next season. The last reigning World Series champion to be in first entering May, before the Dodgers pulled
02:08it off in each of the last two years, was the 2018 Astros. What about the teams at the bottom?
02:13There's
02:14plenty of baseball left, and hope is far from lost. In 2024, the Astros became the first club to be
02:20in
02:20last place entering May, and still win its division since the 2015 Blue Jays and Rangers did it.
02:25All told, since 1996, 13 teams have held at least a share of last place in a division entering May,
02:32and then gone on to reach the playoffs that season. Seven as division winners and six as wild cards.
02:38This year's leaders among the current NL division leaders entering May,
02:41every team except the Reds has been in at least a share of first place entering May,
02:46at least once, since the start of 2024. The last time Cincinnati was in this position entering May
02:52was 2006, when they were tied atop the division with the Cardinals, their last outright May 1st lead
02:58came in 2002. In the AL, the Yankees and Tigers were in this spot a year ago, the Guardians were
03:05there
03:05in 2024, and the A's were there in 2021. The Guardians and Dodgers each won their divisions
03:11last season, while the Yankees did so in 2024, and the Braves, in 23. Before that, it's been a wait,
03:19the Tigers last won a division title in 2014, the A's in 2013, and the Reds way back in 2012.
03:28The big lead the largest division lead right now belongs to the Braves at six and a half games.
03:34That matches the 2012 Rangers for the third biggest division lead entering May since divisional play
03:40began in 1969. Only the 2001 Mariners, nine games, and the 1977 Dodgers, seven and a half, have led by
03:49more. One important footnote. This season included the earliest domestic opening day in MLB history,
03:55and until relatively recently seasons didn't start until April was already underway.
04:00That means the Braves had more games to build their cushion than the other historic teams on the list.
04:05Impressive, but context matters, Atlanta has played 32 games, nine teams have ever led their division by
04:11more than six and a half games through their 32nd game of a season. The most recent was the 2016
04:18Cubs.
04:20What's next? There is a mountain of baseball still to be played, but fans of the seven current
04:25division leaders can take some comfort in knowing that historically, about half of these teams will
04:30eventually win the division, and for those rooting for a team that isn't leading right now,
04:35that roughly 50-50 split means there is still plenty of room for someone else to snatch a division crown.
04:40So, Tigers fans, after watching Detroit hold a share of the AL Central lead at this point last season
04:46only to finish with a wild card, how confident are you that this year's squad will go the distance
04:51and hang a division banner for the first time since 2014.
