00:25It's got a mix of different styles of architecture.
00:30It's a very beautiful city.
00:31We rely on you to tell us, Mark.
00:32You're the expert.
00:33I've never been here, but, you know.
00:37Halfway into the 12,000-kilometre race to Mongolia...
00:41Wow, what a place. Look at that.
00:42God, it's stunning.
00:44Oh, I love it. That's where we ran.
00:46Yeah. I know, yeah.
00:48All four teams gather in Georgia's capital.
00:53Despite all the buildings we've sold, it's a very young city.
00:56It's such a street vibe to it, isn't it?
00:58There's a sculpture or something, isn't there?
01:01Oh, yeah, what is that?
01:02In the heart of Tbilisi, the Tamada, or Toastmaster...
01:06Is he singing a song or is he having a drink?
01:09Are you enjoying that? Tasty?
01:10A symbol of hospitality for nearly 3,000 years, embodying the Georgian belief that every guest is a gift from
01:19God.
01:19Hello.
01:20Hello, everybody.
01:22Fancy meeting you all here.
01:24Beautiful.
01:24Imagine.
01:26Such an amazing place for halfway line.
01:28Yeah.
01:28Yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:29It's such a milestone.
01:31I have no clue what to expect in the next couple of countries.
01:34No idea.
01:34The map is pretty empty.
01:37The teams are entering a new phase of the race.
01:40As they prepare to cross a changing landscape, the leaderboard also shifts.
01:46Mark and Margo have leapt into the lead, while Katie and Harrison trail by nearly 20 hours.
01:51We've dropped from first fourth quite dramatically.
01:57Ah, bottom's terrible.
01:58Like, we had great experiences last time, but I want to make up time.
02:01I think it is just about finding that balance between race and experience.
02:05We clearly haven't found it, it's been one or the other.
02:08We've proved we can win a leg.
02:10Actually, we've stumbled into winning a leg, but we've gone up and up and up the leaderboard.
02:15Trying to stay at the top now?
02:16Yes!
02:17Yeah.
02:18Due to the land borders being closed between Georgia and Azerbaijan,
02:22it is not possible for the race to continue over land.
02:25You must fly to Akhtar, Kazakhstan.
02:28Wow!
02:29Yeah.
02:30Kazakhstan.
02:31That's a big one on the map.
02:33It's huge.
02:34Oh, my God.
02:35That's going to be amazing.
02:37What's there?
02:38Vast open spaces and grasses everywhere, no trees.
02:43Keepers.
02:45I'm quite apprehensive.
02:46I know a little bit about the stands, but Kazakhstan, I've got no idea at all.
02:52It's going to be a wild ride, and we're up for a wild ride.
02:54We didn't sign up for things just to be regular safe.
02:58I can't believe I'm going to Kazakhstan.
02:59It just feels mental.
03:01I don't know what to expect.
03:03I literally couldn't tell you.
03:04I don't know what these countries are like for English,
03:06but I can't imagine that you're going to rock up and go like,
03:08you all right, bro?
03:09Do you know what I mean?
03:11It very much feels like the unknown now.
03:18Now that you've got a problem.
03:41It's just more complicated than the unknown.
03:43After the fact, you've got to hear things your voice,
03:43well I'm gonna need my sunglasses here look at that let's get out into
03:48Kazakhstan well we can't stand here we are after their flight from Georgia the
03:55four teams have touched down in Akhtar
04:03set between desert and sea a Soviet-era city engineered solely for industry this
04:11is the gateway to Kazakhstan the world's largest landlocked country one of vast
04:20horizons and challenging landscapes that have shaped a culture of both endurance
04:25and generosity it looks good here though look at that see just for miles I've been
04:34a prairie race leaders mark and Margo are the first to depart your fifth
04:39checkpoint is Zamin National Park oh that would be glorious
04:46Zamin Uzbekistan well found Margo a journey of around 2,200 kilometers into the
04:55soaring peaks of Zamin National Park part of the Turkestan mountain range and nicknamed
05:04the Uzbek Switzerland it's alpine meadows and hidden valleys shelter rare birds
05:09links and Siberian ibex home to some of Central Asia's most dramatic scenery a
05:17contrast to the arid plains that lead here whoa the route's gonna be wild getting
05:23there I think I think so I mean you could go around this way via Kazakhstan that is
05:27considerably longer I think the best way to go to Uzbekistan go through Uzbekistan yeah
05:32that's the most direct route isn't it for the longest leg yet the teams must choose between
05:38two countries they can make an early crossing into Uzbekistan following ancient Silk Road
05:45routes through bustling cities shorter in distance but transport may be less reliable or they can stay in
05:53Kazakhstan tracking Northeast across remote lands dotted with Soviet era settlements all connected by a
06:0116,000 kilometer railway network that offers slower but steadier travel we've only just got to
06:08Kazakhstan I'd like to see more I think it's gonna be very much like this you know quite boring visually
06:14mmm Kazakhstan sounds a bit like more crazy and wild like the Wild West mmm mark has had a lot
06:21of
06:21choices so far I've enjoyed the things we've done but we've made decisions that were right for him
06:26but as the races continues I've realized that I have to have my turn of choosing things so let's
06:31have a little look in the directory see what jobs are on offer okay yes yes look at this mark
06:35look at
06:36that one the horse farm near Turkestad I love horses you do yeah do you I'm not too keen on
06:43horses but I
06:44think Mongolian and Canadian horses I think they're quite small so I might be okay with joyful horses yeah
06:50coming first I think we've got the chance to take risks even though it looks further to travel I feel
06:55it's going to be faster but I've got nothing to base it on it's a gamble that's okay let's gamble
07:01and
07:02go to Kazakhstan roll the dice yeah we want to get to train station to keep the race on track
07:08the in-laws
07:08are planning a Kazakh adventure heading north east from Akhto city by rail oh so do you speak English the
07:15train
07:16station please come on to you people take me great yes yes yes oh thank you my name is
07:24Janice Genghis the man I'll go in the front with Genghis lovely
07:34welcome to this it is like the wild west mark it is isn't it yeah train choo-choo choo-choo
07:48Caspi C mm-hmm Caspi C Paton what's out no we want the station oh I think you want to
07:55show us the
07:55Caspian C yes that's BC get a bit of a tour here I'm not sure about this Margot this is
08:02what we like
08:02adventure the adventure of a lifetime Kazakhstan 90 minutes behind there's a train route that goes
08:12straight through Kazakhstan I'm sick of buses Joe and Kush debate their options fingers though it's gonna
08:18take longer than it's worth in my opinion his backstand looks way shorter number one priority is the race so
08:25I
08:25want to take the faster route regardless I can't lie it is wacky but I think overnight
08:30chain will be sick an amazing experience I want to do because it's done
08:34it's best time does look more efficient it does look quicker but I'm not thinking about efficiency
08:39I'm thinking about the experience is this traveling through Kazakhstan yes oh bro so
08:47from 8 30 and tomorrow we can get from Akhto to Gizlodra one day five hours oh wow okay
08:5229 hour train we're gonna cover so much distance by this one overnight let's go Kazakhstan clinching
08:59the argument for Joe the best friends have found a cross-country train leaving in the morning taking
09:06them a hugely beneficial 1,400 kilometers deep into Kazakhstan 29 hour train is gonna be boss we are super
09:15super stoked tomorrow we are covering more distance than the length of the UK that could be sir
09:28Caspian sea Wow Caspian sea we're seeing the Caspian Sea working well okay spanning an area the size of Japan
09:35the Caspian Sea isn't a sea at all but the world's largest lake gorgeous didn't think we'll get to see
09:41this to do if I didn't five nations share its vast shoreline Turkmenistan Azerbaijan Russia Iran and
09:52Kazakhstan this is beautiful I am liking Kazakhstan so far already get a sense of the pride they've got in
10:02their country that's been Caspian sea yeah thank you without you we wouldn't have seen it station
10:10choo choo yes ticket ticket yeah what's he telling you oh 6 30 oh yeah so if we'd come straight
10:21out we
10:22could have yeah we might have done it yeah 8 30 tomorrow yes okay eyeing up the same long distance
10:30train as Joe and Kush give me a long hard journey I think for us just zip it man this
10:36June is going
10:37to be a trial they will also need to wait until morning losing their lead before they've left Acta
10:44no matter what the consequences I'm glad we've done it
11:03thank you thank you my friend this is 8 30 in Acta I've just seen my home model did you
11:15yeah
11:16they're on the same dream that's my BVM closed that gap looks like it's go down wow the efficiency
11:26leaving on time two teams set off on their long-haul train journey bound for the vastness of Kazakhstan
11:34it's gonna be interesting isn't it well ask me that in 29 hours first carved over a century ago these
11:43Russian and Soviet tracks skirt the sparse a steward plateau outside some of the most remote terrain on
11:52earth inside the carriages are famed for their village like community with a Kazakh spirit can
11:59turn strangers into family I have no clue what this game is to know it's called then how it works
12:09I just whips out the board and started pointing not a single word spoken yet
12:20oh yeah yeah you can't I know yeah I'm probably getting battered right now I don't know what the
12:25score is but it is fun just like interacting with someone in a different way oh wait I think he's
12:31showing me oh my god he won second in the championship oh my god you're playing with a
12:42master job it's the strangest sausage I've ever seen yes isn't it very old sausage right you're gonna
12:48have to help me with that no no expand got to eat it keep your strength up I was a
12:53vegetarian for 20
12:54years I'm becoming a vegetarian again not on this trip you won't be blokes over there of having
13:00vodka with their breakfast do you think we should get some vodka with our breakfast I am not having
13:04vodka with my breakfast no it must be a tradition a Kazakhstan tradition mark oh let's have a vodka
13:10no no vodka first thing in the morning I'm gonna ask if it's traditional okay okay you see I'm gonna
13:15ask them about the culture what English no no no what was the name Margo Margo Margo Margo like
13:24my name is Sultan Sultan do you have vodka for breakfast is this usual this is a good tradition
13:46oh Mark I'm having a great time yes hypnotized give me your vodka I give me your vodka Mark you
13:55don't want to come round and join us no no I'm happy here oh sorry sorry sorry but oh I
14:01don't drink
14:02vodka at all really it's not my drink he wants to marry me does he no no no no no
14:07no you're a very
14:09naughty boy on trend Joe's I say I like to look out the window and see the landscape as two
14:22teams
14:22advance further into Kazakhstan look at that look that is just on the real as far as the eye can
14:30see
14:30nothing I turn silly but like you can see what people think they're at this flat third to get
14:37going Andrew and Molly set out their plan I really want to do a city I love the idea of
14:44being in and
14:45around people in culture Yubikistan is synonymous with the original Silk Road some of the most beautiful
14:51cities in the world I think that could be dead fun and record opting for a route east through
15:00Uzbekistan the pair set their sights on an ancient city Kiva all right yeah okay where's the train
15:11we're trying to go to Uzbekistan through Ben you yeah yes no no no determined to reach Uzbekistan
15:23today they must first make the five-hour trip to Benu aiming for an evening connection across the border
15:30how much to go to Ben you know I think we missed a train to Ben you where we know
15:36we would have got a
15:37connection to Uzbekistan so we're kind of raising the clock of it because I really want to go to
15:43Kiva City 50 Molly yes guys willing to take us for $50 yes all right to Ben and I will
15:51be there
15:51for four o'clock she's happy great I think we take it okay are you happy with us yeah we
16:01need to get
16:09the train no how much I really haven't a clue yeah we had agreed $50 and then his mates obviously
16:18got around them and decided that that wasn't the money to pay I don't want 100 I want 70 but
16:27Molly's
16:27currently in the negotiations with about 20 men that's okay yeah then goodbye goodbye you're
16:32right Molly there yeah she's holding her own so but we just have to wait and see 70 daddy he
16:40did for
16:4170 well done that was good right go stressful it means we get the connection tonight which is the main
16:51thing what's the last time you ever had something like that I've never had that before never Jesus
16:56Molly well I'm good with Andrew and Molly finally on their way to Bennu oh by the way we're still
17:03in
17:03Europe we're not in Europe we're in Asia Harrison Kazakhstan playing the euro qualifiers Katie and
17:09Harrison waste no time in doing the same I don't do continents I do football confederations we're going
17:16through Uzbekistan rather than over the top through Kazakhstan immediately it looks that the direct
17:23route chasing the same train as Andrew and Molly they look to move quickly across Uzbekistan we are 20
17:32alpine first last leg we maxed out on experience but it did feel like we threw away three lengths worth
17:39of
17:39hard work I just don't want to sign in last again we're racing a lot more than the last leg
17:45but it
17:46is about balance whilst we're in these places we're going to try and experience as much as possible oh
17:52there's camels oh my god there's just camels in the middle of the world this is gonna be cool
18:01right let's go bye bye what time 48 and it goes to knock us okay next time tickets secured
18:17just like the front runners the bottom two teams are now neck and neck happy days are you getting this
18:25for dessert yeah yeah yeah yeah that's all sorted yeah right let's get on the train there is a race
18:34back on it's nice to know that we've caught with someone already I'm sure they're not happy to be
18:38with us because it means they've lost their lead on us there's no other train we could have got so
18:43we've got what we needed to do I'm not worried about who I can see yeah worried about who I
18:48can't see exactly
18:49and if people are around us that means we're in the game you could have some bread I will have
18:55some
18:55of anything but like Jesus bread water is not I am starving got no water no food but what we've
19:05been doing here is eat when you can because you don't know when you're going to eat next the problem
19:10is it's not that hard to find food so every time I eat I've been eating like I'm not going
19:15to eat
19:15the next 48 hours but realistically it's the next four to eight hours
19:35oh don't drink the water thanks not exactly the Orient Express
19:42in the microwave
19:44before you say
19:46before you say
19:48yes
19:50you don't care
19:57yes
19:59yes
20:01no
20:04yes
20:06yes
20:09please
20:11yes
20:12good as the 29-hour train pulls two teams further across Kazakhstan their rival two teams have made
20:20it to Uzbekistan got a train ticket sorted for tomorrow morning out of knock us I'm very much
20:26looking forward to getting to explore Uzbekistan a bit a nation now dominated by youth with 60
20:33percent of its citizens under 30 yet beneath that energy lies a history stretching back more than
20:40true millennia with some of Central Asia's oldest settlements how old is this cemetery then Katie
20:48think of old and then think like even older than that just outside Nukas one of those ancient sites
20:56still remains mr. Khan a sacred necropolis in use for 22 centuries as a burial ground for local
21:04communities profits and royalty we're getting into someone's grave it's kind of creepy on what the
21:15wow even the brickwork on it it's just you've got hundreds of different types of bricks in it and
21:19they've then been put together to create a pattern it must have been such a fast I really want one
21:26will you build a building for me when I die must be jerky it's just cool to go somewhere that's
21:34so
21:34untravelled part of world I never thought I'd go to I know we're obviously racing this leg to try and
21:40get out fourth place but been nice to stop for a second isn't it like to get an appreciation of
21:45of
21:45what Uzbekistan's about yeah thousands of years over where we stood it's one of them date back to 400 BC
21:53when the dinosaurs are out oh my god are you serious where's the ticket office sorry on the
22:04other side of town at Nukas station sorry do you really buy a ticket ticket Andrew and Molly have
22:11their own plans to explore Uzbekistan I am especially looking forward to Kiva City I'd love to see the
22:18culture rather than going out to nature just more daddy things but yeah that'd be lovely actually
22:25we're looking to get to Kiva City when is the next train all right thank thank you thank you
22:32right okay having missed another train we seem to keep getting stuck they search for alternative
22:39transport hello English English is there a bus to Kiva bus no taxi taxi talk a taxi I don't know
22:48what to do I don't know yeah sorry just let us stop I need to do something want to enjoy
22:53today it's
22:55sorry just one sec I don't like having to pay for another taxi but I don't want to be stuck
22:59at a
23:00train station I really don't know what to do you can see it from the map the distances we're covering
23:04it's gonna be a long leg a lot of travel I think you could get lost very very quickly in
23:09this leg
23:09beginning to realize that Molly has the ability to be confident but at times she doesn't have that
23:15inner self-belief so my job is the reminder that there's a time to put the skates on okay sorry
23:26for
23:26being a bit indecisive I'm just overthinking probably I'm gonna have to make a call yeah
23:32he will won't come up Kiva City so do yes okay okay yes Molly's Kiva City dream has cost them
23:44another taxi ride good call yeah I think it's a call I don't know if it's a good one you
23:51all right
23:52I'm just gonna do it's true at least we should get there in a couple of hours and enjoy Kiva
23:58yeah
24:00as father and daughter make the last 190 kilometer push to Kiva two teams are still racing along the
24:07rails through Kazakhstan's Kizilorda region an open desert step where settlements are scarce and the
24:15horizon seems never-ending look at that bit of flatland oh my god you see that
24:21it's a rock how do they survive on this landscape to start off with it was actually quite a variety
24:29of
24:29terrain but it's now just flattened out into a vast step I have not seen one tree since eight o
24:37'clock
24:37this morning wake me up with any interesting heavens I think you're pretty safe
24:50on the edge of the Karakum desert lies Kiva a gateway for silk road traders to rest and recover
25:01before facing the vast sands of Central Asia within it lies itch and Kala a maze of narrow streets and
25:09blue
25:09tiled minarets enclosed by towering clay walls still perfectly preserved today oh look at this
25:18Molly Wow okay I just feel like we've taxied this whole yeah I know journey and Andrew and Molly's city
25:30stopover has cost more than a day and a half's race budget on taxis alone a modern reminder of just
25:36how remote this outpost is to reach Kiva yep it's just lovely eventually got here but honestly very
25:46deflated very deflated very deflated kind of annoyed of course there's a lot of money to get here and
25:56we're gonna have to spend money to get out of here more than likely or we just sacrificed the race
26:05it's it's something I wanted to do and it's not worked out very well so I've got a guilt with
26:12that
26:16you all right I've been fed up sorry yeah do you want to we go for a walk have have
26:25a bit of a bit of
26:26us time I love to go for a walk all right kid yeah okay yeah go on a walk it
26:35is stunning isn't it
26:36kind of like Aladdin it is absolutely Aladdin yeah look at it it's amazing it is crazy I don't really
26:45know why I'm upset I'm trying to prove myself that I'm independent but I really do overthink things I'm
26:52always kind of going oh could I have done that better could I have gotten it for cheaper where's
26:57the best place to see it Molly up on the walls no oh wow that's beautiful I wish I could
27:10stand on my
27:11decisions with pride beautiful beautiful spot amazing but I'm scared of negatively affecting people
27:19and with this race it's daddy I don't want to disappoint him oh it's lovely actually I probably need to
27:27trust my God I know that is within my power so I think this is what I need to do
27:34from now on in it is
27:36beautiful happy we did it good call all right Molly but you think it's fascinating I always find it's that
27:44like the
27:45sun goes down and it always goes back up again I know yeah no matter what your day is like
27:49at least it'll come
27:50up tomorrow yeah that's the thing so I think that's what we need to think about
27:53we need to think about today it's kind of a nice roundup tomorrow will be a better day yeah
28:05the noise oh look at that color huh beautiful it is lovely isn't it in Kazakhstan after more than a
28:13day's
28:13travel this was because mother yo Joe is this us Joe Joe and Kush and Mark and Margo alight and
28:23Kizilorda more than halfway to the checkpoint we need a hotel should transfer our fella see if he's
28:32here to bed in with Kazakh culture because that's my name because that cushion lovely to meet you my
28:39friend Joe and Kush have arranged a homestay with local businessman Bekzat and his family very nice
28:46space you're welcome to thank you my house this is my family this is my father my mother and Kazak
29:01tradition the national dish of best Burmak is served on special occasions it's sharing platter a symbol of
29:09unity and hospitality I saw good mmm tastes amazing oh sports me basketball and course tie boxing
29:44my father he fight my tie me my tie father my biological dad passed away when I was one my
29:54mom was
29:54along with me and my older brother and she met my dad slash stepdad not he was a fighter he's
30:02coached me
30:03and my brother for as long as I can remember Muay Thai Thai boxing as a kid I remember doing
30:10pads in the
30:11garden that's a big one he'd do around the pads with us and then make us do press-ups while
30:16the other one
30:16does the pads even though we're not blood he never once shied away from treating me as his own
30:26so growing up with him as someone strong to look up to you it meant it means the world your
30:32medals
30:36what are you saying champion number one champion
30:44there's a language barrier but I can sort of relate to the journey that they've grown up with watching
30:50their dad and being inspired to then pursue the same passion hey you've done this you know what I
30:57think this guy's got a lovely family it's so lovely all it's so sweet in Uzbekistan taxi taxi train
31:12station train in English no time to mess around with our fast train noises we're in a race having
31:34spent the night in Nukas Katie and Harrison are bound 550 kilometers southeast to the medieval city
31:41Bukhara gonna get traveling all day you can't really ask for much more to the south in Kiva trained
31:49to Bukhara Andrew and Molly have the same idea two is that the earliest there's no earlier one
31:57Molly here this is two it's half 10 now and it's gonna be a long wait the taxis how much
32:03yeah it's
32:0450 quid it's gonna cost several the money to get the taxi this leg we've taxied a lot I think
32:10I'd
32:10rather prioritize budget getting to Bukhara so where trains best yeah that's a good call yeah I need
32:17two tickets to Bukhara feeling very good much better today the last couple of legs I've realized
32:25that being last hasn't been a hindrance Paris and Katie were 10 hours behind us and sure they've got
32:29the same train of us out of here so I think really in the next coming legs it's not gonna
32:35matter if we
32:36can just stay in the game stay as close as possible appreciate it thanks very much there's no point one
32:41in
32:41the first couple you only want to win one so so we keep telling ourselves 560 kilometers away in
32:49southern Kazakhstan and see some of that soviet architecture isn't it two teams wake up in
32:56Kizilorda in the 1920s it was the Soviet capital owing to its strategic position on the Tashkent
33:05railway line well workers unite look at that that's all the good that circuit propaganda isn't
33:12it it's very strong and dramatic as mark and Margo head out of the city to reach their homestay
33:20come on Marco want to go to sleep so cool Joe and Kush of the opportunity to explore their
33:31host Bexat's dojo definitely a random experience they would do though in the middle of Kazakhstan
33:43of course has been starved from his Muay Thai there's nice to see him that some steam
33:56come to this gym it means a lot to me it's more than just throwing and hitting
34:01and fighting there's a lot of meaning behind it I think back to memories of me dad I found it
34:09sick
34:10to do what your dad does being in the gym I wonder what he'd be thinking I'd be standing on
34:16the side
34:16it would have like a particular sort of smirk on his face watching me do judo throws
34:26I remember the day he passed it was locked down and it was it was a real big shock he
34:33had really poor
34:34mental health and he took his own life you never sort of forget that that shock factor
34:51I still think about him all the time being on this journey it's brought me little moments of
34:57of be boss to tell him
35:01and I wish I really wish I could sort of show him who I am now because when you're 14
35:08it's like
35:09I didn't know who I was and I was still a child and I made a lot like I made
35:14a lot of mistakes when
35:15I was younger and I feel like if I could sort of show him what I've learned
35:32losing Kush's dad it was so sudden I think experiencing them hardships like so unexpectedly it has affected
35:44the Kush's personality he wants to stay in control of himself you know he doesn't he's never drank
35:51he's never got drunken before doesn't smoke doesn't do anything without checking safety twice
35:59because it was such a shock I guess he doesn't want anything like that to happen again thank you I'm
36:06very
36:06grateful we're doing the race together like we can literally go to each other for anything we just
36:14need to get fixed on hopefully we can got some work keeping the budget healthy I'm always there for
36:20course and I know he's always there for me as well boost Turkistan oh perfect sick thank you
36:28good bye check the jobs directory there's a drop seven food at this plaza that looks sick that would
36:39be boss as Joe and Kush push on south in search of work across the border in Uzbekistan it's tight
36:50now I don't know how you're gonna do this boy Andrew and Molly are finally on their seven hour train
36:55journey to Bukhara heading the same way how is it this is scary but kind of cool this is what
37:10I've
37:10been wanting to do this whole time Katie and Harrison I feel like this is an out-of-body experience
37:16looking at a desert outside of a sleeper train yeah I just never thought I'd be here really pleased with
37:23how we're racing so far we spent a good day in Nukkas but then got out there as soon as
37:28we
37:28reasonably could and now we're nine hours on the move to Bukhara he couldn't ask for much more really
37:34my name is my name is Faisal Harrison Harrison Harrison nice to meet you Katie where are you from where

38:02if you said to me five years ago that you'd be traveling across the world and seeing these places
38:07I wouldn't have believed you I'm obviously a world away from home but I don't feel it before the race
38:15I
38:15certainly wouldn't be going up speaking to people but I think it's become a second nature now it is very
38:21lovely to meet you two you have been very kind it's the bit that I kind of dread but it's
38:26always the
38:27experience I get the most out of and I'll come away thinking just how wonderful everyone is this is a
38:33gift from me to you

39:18outside the city of Turkestan Mark and Margo have made it to the horse farm run by Kularnoosh and his
39:27family okay the one job you've got to do is shovel shit this is very ripe marking in an exchange
39:38for
39:39bed and board give me a wheelbarrow I'm fine absolutely fine I love wheelbarrows essential to
39:48survival horses have long sustained life on the steppe as transport the source of kumas are fermented
39:55mares milk and as a vital food source mum loves horses I'm a granddad loved horses oh gosh your granddad
40:03was a my great great-granddad was a horse trade was yes yes so what will we do with the
40:11horses what oh
40:12they're meat oh they're meat you eat these oh lord my dream has turned into a nightmare good taste of
40:21reality isn't it when I thought about the Kazakh horses I just thought of them running wild excitedly
40:30over the fields or something are we all right I didn't really associate it with the reality of it's a
40:38major food source and that is reality of the way of life but I want to be open-minded but
40:44sometimes
40:44my mind just um doesn't want to go there poor fella I'm not as squeamish as Margo's course of human
40:54life isn't it we eat animals light's gone hasn't it now right let's go I'm here am I I'm the
41:04head of the
41:04table there we go to welcome their guests the family has prepared a traditional meal it's like a
41:11banquet I feel like a king Margo oh gosh oh thank you very much look at that it's not a
41:23goat
41:33oh lord what is this oh it might feel impolite not to accept it okay I'll try a bit of
41:44that okay
41:45something do you like it just taste of succulent lamb yes I'm enjoying this route I am enjoying it
41:56but it's not been everything I'd hoped for it was a bit of a surprise really I don't know why
42:02I think
42:04my fairy tale thinking got me into another fine mess and what's that I don't know it's meat
42:12Mark this is why I brought you on the race I'm taking one for the team hi hello hello they

42:55of them being very dour and grumpy this is not the case here these are vibrant exciting lovely people
43:06with big hearts this is my wife this is Julia the brochure that carry with me the celebration of
43:13Julia's life so beautiful she's beautiful she's very very beautiful really is an eye opener of how we
43:20should actually treat fellow humans amazing the Kazakh way your treasures absolute treasures thank you
43:27thank you very much thank you night night night night isn't that lovely that was an incredible night
43:34it was not what I expected for a while there back at the farm I was like I know you
43:40were very down
43:41weren't you I was I was yeah but they've opened their hearts and home to us absolutely we could feel
43:46it
43:46it was so genuine wasn't it this homestay it hasn't been about horses it's been about humans it's been
43:5940 kilometers south in the center of Turkestan getting ourselves dressed up for the first time in a long time
44:07I like a smart casual fit you know what I mean Joe and Kush are bolstering their funds with a
44:13shift at a
44:14luxury events venue I wonder what celebration is for today's celebration is called a circumcision party
44:30the Kazakh tradition of soon debt toy a celebration of every boy's journey towards manhood how these
44:39gifts lavish fruit this is a really big deal and an opportunity for families to display their wealth by
44:47spending big on lavish banquets and entertainers I've never been anywhere like this my teeth was in a
44:54church it was quiet it was family and friends and these guys they're getting handed wads of cash
45:10oh my god there's an eagle wow look at that imagine getting an eagle in your party road that would
45:16be lit

45:39one minute
45:46this job has been lively shall I say we wanted that randomness we wanted to experience new things I think
45:54this is ticked both of them boxes I don't know I was just blown away that this type of thing
46:00is
46:00happening around the world like yeah it was a celebration of these two lads getting a circumcision but I feel
46:07like it was it uplifted everyone in that moment we're like yeah yeah yeah yeah I said confine me
46:15after you finish dancing sick it's very easy confidence it's the best job oh my god it's just mine and
46:24Joe's
46:24calling you know what I mean we've been talking to everyone everyone's so nice it's really made me so
46:30thankful that I listened to Joe and we decided to go through Kazakhstan I mean it's such a beautiful country
46:35it's got so much heart and trying to learn to enjoy the moment a lot more trying not to think
46:39so much
46:39about the future or the past you just got to take it all in your stride and enjoy it as
46:43much as you
46:43can and today's been so enjoyable low-key though have you seen the mother she's fine
47:05oh Harrison you look for me orange is your color having arrived last night do you want to get moving
47:14we've been racing pretty hard this leg we do have time we can go and have a wander around Katie
47:20and
47:20Harrison are exploring Bukhara another key stop on the Silk Road it was a center for Islamic theology
47:29unlike the stillness of Kiva it remains a city where ancient madrases centers of higher learning set
47:37alongside a modern working city stunning masks incredible isn't it at its center the 500 year old
47:46Kalyan mosque so have you got a scarf incredible what craftsmanship you don't see that on a new
47:57build in Manchester here it's grand arches and geometric detail designed to evoke a sense of
48:04harmony and balance Katie you stand right in the middle the symmetry of that maybe that's why you like
48:13it's so much it is everything is symmetrical it is sure you're gonna get some food yeah starving
48:25it's a little bit of luxury isn't it very peaceful I want to do this a few years ago yeah
48:32you do you
48:32used to be really boring so it's just good that you did not let yourself miss out on these types
48:37of
48:37experiences really boring is a bit harsh you're quite boring without the race I wouldn't have
48:45allowed myself to go traveling to see these things in person it's not in the plan I set out for
48:50myself
48:50at 17 18 years old my priorities in life have been to save money get on the property ladder as
48:58soon as I
48:59can if that's all sorted and I think it takes away a lot of the worries and stresses I saw
49:03our family grew up
49:06with God we struggled a little bit financially there was a lot of moving I think I've lived in
49:12maybe 14 different houses I've loaned money to my family from the age of 16 since I started working
49:19kind of like the Bank of Harrison rather than Bank of my dad the stresses of financially not always having
49:27enough that's what shaped me to be so financially motivated and secure but I think my mindset on that
49:34is definitely starting to shift my bill here as much as you thought what service charge what service
49:43charge well it was very good service to be fair it was right well the tourist information center over
49:49there get taxis there to examine yeah poised just 430 kilometers from salmon sorry do you have any
49:59English the two teams in Bukhara set about securing onward transport we are trying to get to some mean
50:07national park to strike out towards the checkpoint I mean how much $100 no we are on small budget is
50:19there
50:19a good car no problem we don't care about good car we have cheap with finish low low low no
50:27finish
50:28okay give me one minute okay thank you it's a killer on the budget but we are blast we need
50:38to catch up if
50:39you're happy with spending it then that's fine yeah we go to zombie yeah okay it's very clean glass is
50:46that
50:47oh god it's gorgeous in there as Katie and Harrison as well as Andrew and Molly plot a route east
50:54through
50:55Uzbekistan the priority for today is across the border to Uzbekistan the two teams in Kazakhstan are
51:02ready to approach from the north I feel like taxis quickest for sure I think we should just try and
51:08flag one down here once across the border it's a final push to zamen as the routes converge and the
51:15pack
51:15comes together we're going to Uzbekistan fasten your seat belt we'll be in checkpoints in
51:22no time
51:25wrong way bro he's taking a wrong turn he's being told to make a u-turn but he keeps thinking
51:30and he's
51:30smarter it was Uzbekistan this way he doesn't know he's gone oh my days presume he knows this is
51:42but he's on board a song like him look at how much you're speaking to your woman
51:46how much you're at how much you want to feel a minute you're going to get right to be a
51:49wrong
51:50woman it should be fine we'll get there don't stress
52:03high in the mountains on Uzbekistan's eastern edge the fifth checkpoint
52:13very dramatic isn't it you like a national park don't you know i do sort of Uzbekistan version of
52:19wales poised and ready to go the national park opens and the teams embark on the final push by taxi
52:28this is the bit that i love but it also stresses me out i can't wait to get going get
52:33me out of this
52:34taxi and ready to run within the zamen mountains the sofa plateau known for its distinct flat high
52:42plains and cool thin mountain air thank you thank you
52:49funny amphitheater and the way further instructions amphitheater
52:58uh no idea where it could be amphitheater it's a man-made amphitheater over there look
53:10looks to be that up there yeah that's it in the opera house kind of thing zamen amphitheater standing
53:16nearly 2500 meters above sea level it's a walk for us it's dry up here yeah it's right okay
53:28just a sec my legs are wobbly the altitude has just killed me keep going doing well don't go too
53:37fast
53:37smart i did take my inhaler i'm working very slowly i might have another go with the inhaler
53:42i'm in now physical state to run do you want some water no i'm okay with water
53:48my heart's pounding but we're all right altitude running is not what i'm meant to do
53:54uh almost there seating stage yeah amphitheater
54:03rather impressive structure
54:07travel by cable car to the lower station

56:53what that is so impressive
56:55they might have done that like last to first
56:57the fact harrison and katie got here before us does kind of show that azbekistan was the quicker route
57:04but i'm still not regretting going through kazakhstan we have had the best experiences
57:09hopefully we're going to stay consistent near the top and then on the last leg do that little sprint to
57:14the end
57:19third time being third but very pleased about it thought we were not going to do as well as what
57:24we did
57:24oh marlon that was a tough week that was very tough that was a tough weekend pure utter relief
