00:00The House of Representatives approved a three-year budget plan that paves the way for
00:04up to $70 billion in additional spending for federal immigration enforcement.
00:09The measure passed Wednesday by a narrow 215 to 211 vote, with no support from Democrats.
00:16Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson kept the vote open for more than five hours,
00:21working to win over holdouts within his own party. Some Republican lawmakers from farm
00:26states were pushing for a future vote to expand sales of gasoline blended with ethanol.
00:31Now, it's up to Republicans in both the House and Senate to put together the details of the $70
00:37billion proposal and win passage before sending it to President Donald Trump to sign into law.
00:43Republicans are hoping to do so in May and will be using a special, rarely used procedure that allows
00:49them to pass the legislation through the Senate without any support from Democrats.
00:53They used the same tactic last year to pass roughly $130 billion in funding
00:59for the Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Border Patrol agencies,
01:04funding Trump's massive deportation campaign.
