01:28Watch your back
01:30I want you back
01:31I feel really good
01:34I feel as if
01:35So I'm in
01:36So I'm in
01:37I feel back
01:37I feel so good
01:44Nothing beats being in a band
01:49There's a strength
01:53There's a buzz
01:58From the beginning
02:00There was something within us
02:02That wanted to prove something
02:05We were tight amongst ourselves
02:07I felt like we were kings of the world
02:11But I don't think anything can prepare you
02:13For what we were about to take on
02:16Come the 90s
02:18We all pissed before the show
02:20In a bunch way
02:23We're all working class lads
02:24Giving the golden ticket
02:27It is your one chance
02:28To not fuck your life up
02:30But to make something of yourself
02:36It's so easy to rewrite history
02:40But I remember a lot of the sharper bits of our story
02:45And it's only now
02:46That we can look back
02:48And see what we've really been through
02:51Best group in the entire world
02:54Take that
03:00With GMR 95.1 FM
03:021458 AM
03:03Now here's a story just in
03:05A Manchester-based pop impresario
03:07Is quite certain
03:09That somewhere in the northwest
03:10Are five youngsters
03:11Who can take on America's top group
03:13New Kids on the Block
03:14Are you really that good?
03:16My mum heard about the audition
03:17On the radio station one morning
03:21She dropped me off
03:21And I was like
03:22Mum, don't walk up the street with me
03:24Go on, go off
03:25And as I looked up
03:27There was another lad
03:28Having exactly the same conversation
03:30With his mum
03:31I remember meeting Rob outside
03:34And we kind of walked in together
03:38And that's when I met the other lads
03:39For the first time
03:42I was a vehicle painter
03:44And I was thinking
03:46Is this it?
03:47Is this my life now?
03:50Luckily the boss gave me
03:51Half a day of work
03:52So I could go
03:54I met Gary first
03:56He was different
03:57He was from a different place
04:00I'd never met anybody like him before
04:05The funny thing is
04:07To take that audition
04:08Wasn't my audition
04:09Nigel had told me already
04:11I'm in the band
04:13In fact he told me
04:15He wasn't expecting
04:17To find somebody like me
04:23I lived a completely alien existence
04:26To any teenager
04:27I was never hanging with my friends
04:30After school
04:31I was at home playing music
04:34I was into
04:35Baba, The Beatles
04:36Elton John, Billy Joel
04:38And then the TV turned on
04:42And it was top of the pops
04:45The sound that was coming out of the TV
04:48It was just like
04:50Wow
04:50The obsession had begun
04:59At that age
05:01I realised
05:02I want to be in the charts
05:05I want to be on top of the pops
05:07I thought
05:11Right
05:11I've got to get on this
05:20I played my first gig
05:22In a little social club
05:24In Connorskirk
05:25I was 11
05:34I had bags full
05:36Of manuscript
05:37Of songbooks
05:39And I'd see written underneath it
05:41Words and music
05:42Neil Diamond
05:43Imagine having words and music
05:46My name
05:47Now I needed to write every day
05:50When I wasn't writing
05:51I was recording
05:51But these early songs
05:53Were far too complicated
05:55I thought I'm going to restrict myself
05:57To like
05:58Four chords
06:01First chord
06:02There's the first one
06:03That's a good chord
06:07Right, there's number two
06:09Here's the third one
06:12And here's the fourth one
06:15That's pretty much
06:16A Million Love Songs
06:31And it was the first time
06:34Age 15
06:35I'd written something
06:36That could have been in the charts
06:41And so
06:41I thought
06:42Right, I'm going to send a cassette of me
06:43The original songs
06:44With a photograph
06:46To anyone to do with music
06:51I got a phone call
06:53One phone call
06:54Out of all these envelopes sent
06:56And it was Nigel Martin Smith's office
07:00Nigel was a big name
07:01In Manchester at that time
07:03I rang him up
07:04And I had just about that tape
07:06That he gave me
07:11Someone's chances
07:12Trying to tell me
07:14Who's written these
07:15So have me
07:16But what about the music
07:17Who's done all the music
07:19Nigel
07:19I've done it all in my bedroom
07:22I was shaking
07:23I was thinking
07:23Wow
07:24I knew
07:25I'd got something
07:26That could actually
07:27Be quite hot
07:28Proposite
07:30Went in to see Nigel
07:32And he started talking about
07:34He wanted to make a band
07:35I want to build it all around you
07:38And these songs
07:38I love these songs
07:40Now, I don't want to be in a band
07:41Thanks very much
07:42And he said
07:44Anyway, I'll show you a video
07:46What sort of a band
07:47I'm talking about
07:52And he pressed play
07:53And on this screen
07:55Came this band called
07:56New Kids on the Block
07:58First time was a great time
08:00Second time was a blast
08:02Third time I fell in love
08:07And he was very honest with me early
08:09He said
08:10As a solo act
08:11You're not ready
08:12But he said
08:13I can put a vehicle around you
08:15That give it five or six years
08:18You'll be ready by then
08:19And that was clear
08:21From the word go
08:23Nigel had this vision
08:26Gary was obviously
08:27The singer-songwriter
08:28The creative sort of nucleus
08:30Of the band
08:31Mark
08:33He was more like
08:34A young boy
08:35If you like
08:35So he was appealing
08:36To younger girls
08:37Robbie
08:38Everyone knew how funny he was
08:40So I guess he was the funnier one
08:41And myself and Howard
08:43We were the dancers
08:44We just made up the numbers
08:45At the back
08:47This is not going to work
08:49You might not understand it now
08:50But
08:51Come to think of it
08:52The Spice Girls kind of
08:53Nicked our idea
09:03As soon as we were selected
09:05We started getting into the studio
09:07And practising dance routines
09:08I remember Jay
09:10And he'd been on the
09:11Hitman and Her
09:12On the telly
09:15I was very very impressed with that
09:18Yeah
09:19When Jason moved
09:20It was kind of breathtaking
09:23It was quite astonishing to watch
09:27Sometimes we'd laugh at Gaz
09:28Because he was a bit
09:29Sort of old fashioned
09:31We'd seen MC Hammer
09:33And we could do the Running Man
09:34But Gary couldn't do the Running Man
09:36We had to teach him
09:41Everyone was really cool
09:44And I felt like none of that
09:47I felt musically strong
09:49But like image
09:50And I felt really
09:52Out of place
09:54I felt like a club act
09:56And they looked like
09:57Top of the Pops
09:59It had me on the back foot
10:00A little bit
10:01That did
10:02Gary you're the singer
10:03And writer
10:04Of most of the songs
10:05How many songs
10:07Have you actually
10:07Got together now
10:09When the set
10:10When we go out
10:10Performing around the north
10:11We've got about
10:13Six songs in that set
10:14So really
10:14You only need another three
10:15And then you've got an album
10:19We started to hire a band
10:20And do these gigs locally
10:22From like Hull or Halifax
10:24Or Huddersfield
10:25I don't want anybody thinking
10:26That that's fake in this band
10:28Because it's not
10:31Our first gigs
10:32Were always in gay clubs
10:33You know
10:34They loved us
10:36How do you get this band across
10:38How do you build up a fan base
10:40And we're obviously targeting gay men
10:44Nigel was convinced early on
10:46We were going to break
10:47In the gay clubs
10:50That was Nigel's one place
10:52That he had some sway
10:54And it was an audience he knew
10:57And I could never see it
11:00I was still earning a living
11:02In these social clubs
11:04So it'd be like Wednesday night
11:06And I'd be on
11:07In Wigan British Legion
11:10Singing Phantom of the Opera
11:11Having a great time by the way
11:16The following night
11:17I'd be in a gay club in Manchester
11:20With leather trousers on
11:23No top on
11:24With white hair
11:26And oh my goodness
11:28I absolutely hated the outfits
11:30Everyone else
11:31Loved them
11:33Let's hear some noise
11:39Hello
11:40Welcome to the Hitman and her
11:41This is the Hitman
11:42And this is her
11:43And we're back in Manchester
11:46We enjoyed the performances in clubs
11:48But then started getting on TV
11:50It was a massive learning experience
11:57We were a very bouncy band
11:59In the beginning
12:01We did a lot of bouncy
12:03In big shoes
12:04You're my kind of girl
12:07Wanna take you home
12:09It took us a minute
12:11To figure out what we were
12:12But there was a band up there
12:15They weren't playing in a club
12:16They were playing in front of
12:17Wembley Stadium
12:18That night
12:25Even those early days
12:27We wanted to be brilliant
12:29You know
12:30The dream was there
12:31Come Manchester
12:33Take that
12:38Now Brad
12:39You'd like to introduce yourself
12:40To the nation
12:41Go on
12:41I'm Robbie
12:42I'm Gary
12:43I'm Matt
12:44And I'm Howard
12:44I'm Jason
12:45And we are
12:46Take that
12:47We were getting to know each other better
12:49And we were learning our place within the band
12:55The other lads were a bit older than me
12:57So when we used to do the driving to the gigs
13:00The lads would say like
13:01You aren't driving
13:02So you go and get our suites
13:04And fill up the car
13:06Here's Gaz and Howard
13:07Say hello
13:09Cheers boys
13:10To have that shared experience with these people
13:14There was something exciting about it
13:17And we were starting to become friends
13:21Jake
13:21Say hello lad
13:24My mum's going to see this
13:25So say hello to my mum
13:27Hello mum
13:29It's Howard Spielberg Donald here
13:32On the Panasonic
13:33One week we were playing at this place in Hull
13:41But the club owner called Nigel the week before
13:44And said
13:45Hey I've got this event on at 6 o'clock
13:48And it's for kids under 18
13:50Put the band on there
13:52Let's just see how it goes
13:55By half past 6
13:56We're all in the band reading Nigel
13:58Nigel you won't believe what's happened
14:00We've been mobbed
14:02And it was a big turning point for us
14:04Because he realised the audience
14:06Now it's not older
14:08It's younger
14:12Morning everyone
14:14Morning Harry
14:15Oh sound a bit quiet
14:17Sound a bit quiet for one of our concerts
14:19We do school halls
14:22And invade their assemblies
14:24It's a different to do
14:25Act 2 or 3 songs
14:26It's a backing track
14:26You know
14:31The teachers didn't know what to do
14:33The kids didn't know what to do
14:35They were like
14:35What the hell is going on here
14:37Who are these guys
14:41Thanks everyone
14:44But it did grow into something
14:46We had something in that madness
14:50All of a sudden
14:51You walk out your front door
14:53And there was like a person there
14:54They were like
14:55Hi Mark
14:56And then you'd walk out
14:58You know your next time
14:59And there was maybe five people there
15:01Then you'd get cars following you
15:03From gig to gig
15:06Eventually we'd have
15:07Three or four shows in a day
15:09Where we'd play a school in the morning
15:11Then we'd play in under 18s
15:13And over 18s
15:14Then a gay club
15:16It's where we learnt
15:19How to perform
15:20It's where we learnt our trade
15:26You go to some clubs
15:27And the girls were actually wanting to rip your clothes off
15:30Screaming over the music
15:32So you couldn't even hear the music
15:34I guess that's when I thought
15:37Something's happening here
15:40I'm quite lucky tonight
15:41Behind the scenes people
15:42Because Gary's wearing his
15:43Carbon client
15:44Extraordinary
15:46Normally he's wearing his
15:47$3.99
15:48I'm sorry
15:49Hey
15:49No let's get it back
15:51Sorry
15:52Five for $3.99
15:53Come on
15:55The time came where
15:58Nigel basically saying that
16:00We've got to give our jobs up
16:02It's a real scary move
16:03To leave something
16:04To try something new
16:07You know
16:07I told my mum
16:08And my mum was fuming
16:10Sometimes we'd do some gigs
16:11Where we actually got paid cash
16:13At the end of the night
16:14But we'd joke that
16:15Cash wasn't enough
16:16For our taxi fare home
16:18I didn't know then
16:19You know
16:20Nobody knew then
16:21What was going to happen
16:21With the band
16:23Yeah so it's just sort of like
16:24Went along
16:25For the ride
16:26Good job I did
16:28Wasn't it
16:28And now at this point
16:31We'd just done everything
16:33Except to have a hit
16:34We need to change this
16:37We needed a label
16:44The second week at number one
16:46It is Snotablan
16:47The Power
16:53At the turn of the 90s
16:55The charts were dominated
16:58With faceless dance music
17:03You'd watch Top of the Fox
17:05And you knew the song
17:06But you wouldn't know the artist
17:18Nigel was taking us to these labels
17:20And they were saying
17:21Well listen
17:22The music's a bit old
17:23No one's signing this stuff
17:25At the moment
17:26It's literally like
17:27Out of fashion
17:30I'm back in the studio
17:31Writing
17:32And you know
17:33I'm trying to update myself
17:36It was tricky for me
17:39But none of us really knew failure
17:41At that age
17:44So there was only belief
17:45We will make it
17:47Yeah we will make it
17:48That's right
17:48It's just going to take a lot of hard work
17:50You know
17:51On our behalf
17:52We're all prepared to do it
17:53We're all going to give it our best shot
17:54Aren't we lads
17:55Definitely
17:55Take that
17:59Nigel talked about things
18:01Like they'd already happened
18:02When you're massive
18:03Right
18:04You're just going to be like this
18:06And then you're going to do this
18:07And you're sat there going
18:09This guy's either completely crazy
18:12Or he's going to be right
18:14I'd never met anybody like him in my life
18:16The way he spoke about
18:17What he was going to do with us
18:18And what we were going to be
18:20Yeah I believed him
18:22This is pure boredom
18:24Isn't it?
18:24This is what you call a lazy bastard manager
18:30And then I heard Nigel's remortgage his house
18:33So we can put the first single out
18:35Okay stand by anyone
18:37And that was a song called Do What You Like
18:39Two
18:39One
18:40Two
18:41Two
18:42Two
18:42Two
18:42Two
18:43Two
18:43Two
18:43Two
18:43Two
18:43Two
18:44Two
18:44Three
18:45Three
18:46Two
18:51Two
18:51It was Nigel's idea
18:53That we had to stand out
18:55We had to make an impression
18:59The idea of Do What You Like
19:01Was to put a tape on people's tables
19:03And to go what the hell is this
19:05Energy
19:11And people definitely said what the hell is this when they watched it
19:26It was all sex, it was all to do with sex, which is how a lot of pop music is
19:32based on
19:32They're really good looking and they've got big muscles
19:36I love Bobby because he's got gorgeous eyes and a gorgeous body and he can have me phone number any
19:40day
19:41What is it then?
19:42Six, seven, eight, nine, seven, double eight, call me any time
19:46The great thing about Do What You Like is it got interest from labels
19:50I understand that you've been offered a deal now, a record deal
19:53We just carry on doing gigs until we get the right deal
19:55When we get the right deal we'll sign
19:57Nigel said, oh, I've got an interview at a label
20:01They're looking to sign the pop act
20:04So Nigel got the A&R man and brought him to an under-18s gig in Nottingham
20:11And it looked like the Beatles in 1967
20:14It was absolute chaos
20:16I don't think he heard of a note of music
20:19But he saw the reaction
20:24And we were pretty much signed on that night
20:28And of course, it's a big high
20:30It's a big moment
20:36Can we have a sunbite, please, Sammy?
20:38Okay
20:40Please
20:43Action
20:46We were at a point after about six months had been signed
20:50Where we hadn't had a hit
20:51And I'm really concerned we're going to get dropped
20:54And Nigel was worried
20:56And he didn't show his worry very often
21:01Gary, so the music we didn't expect from taking out?
21:03Definitely not, definitely not
21:04It's no harm in playing a bit on the piano now and again
21:07We released a song called Promises
21:09But we didn't break through
21:15And then we had another song called Once You Tasted Love
21:20Which did a similar thing
21:22I felt like I'd failed
21:24Because I hadn't delivered what we needed as a group
21:28And I wondered, you know, are people talking about me in the band?
21:32You know, is everyone a bit disappointed?
21:43I can't even imagine the pressure that Gaz was under to go off and find the right song
21:50It's damn not as good as Rob Penner, I admit that
21:52I felt like the band wanted more
21:57We're tough, we're bad music
22:00And I just don't write lyrics like that
22:11And that's where the idea for
22:13It Only Takes A Minute came in
22:17Here they are with a brand new, hot, 100 hit all over the country
22:32It wasn't one of Gary's songs, it was an old song, it was a cover version of a band called
22:38Tavares
22:40It only takes a minute, girl
22:44To fall in love
22:46To fall in love
22:49Now to me, it was like the worst news
22:54Just, oh please, just give me a few more weeks
22:57I really wanna, I can write this single, you know
23:01But Nigel had given me a pep talk and said, listen, it's a vehicle to get you where we need
23:07to get you to
23:08Just do this cover version
23:10And then you can have all the control back of the music
23:16Yeah, went in, did the vocal
23:18Rob did some ad-libs on the end, we did some backgrounds as a group
23:22And about four days later, a grinning Nigel came towards the van with a cassette in his hand
23:31And he said, here's your passport to being the biggest songwriter in the country
23:37First, the hits that have made it to the Top of the Pops
23:41This is it
23:43Our first performance on Top of the Pops
23:46We knew this was gonna be big
23:52And we're all so excited
23:55To get on Top of the Pops
23:58Welcome Manchester's favourite pin-up stars, Tate Best
24:02I can remember as I was jumping up the giant back screen, yay!
24:07We made it!
24:15Next guests are three members of the band Take That
24:18His latest single went straight into the charts at number 16
24:21I think we deserve it, number 16
24:23And hopefully next week we'll be going up
24:25Baby, can't you make it just a little time?
24:30Really put us on the map, that song
24:31That's where it kind of exploded
24:36We did all these signings, mobbed everywhere, you know, kids falling over the counters
24:43Some had come from as far as Ireland
24:45Others had spent £30 on rail fares
24:49And most had been waiting for their heroes since 6.30 this morning
24:53Good God!
24:57Yeah, we'd had a hit, we'd had a top ten hit
25:01Things were looking up
25:02To fall in love
25:03To fall in love
25:05To fall in love
25:07To fall in love
25:07To fall in love
25:07We then did, like, the biggest road shows, the most gigs
25:13Is it 50,000?
25:1770,000?
25:1870,000?
25:2070,000?
25:2170,000?
25:2270,000?
25:2270,000?
25:2370,000?
25:2570,000?
25:26And it was all just, like, crazy exciting
25:31Thank you, H&M!
25:35There was a dream that you were living that you didn't want to end
25:40This year, people are being encouraged to spend a holiday here
25:44In the Lancashire mill town of Oldham
25:47On Oldham edge, the grass is green
25:50I wanted to be a footballer when I was growing up
25:52I wanted to be, like, Diego Maradona
25:54And then, when I was 10 or 11, I got into break dancing
25:58In the last of our series of what kids have been doing in these summer holidays
26:01We are taking a look at the break dance craze
26:05So I had my ghetto blaster and my vinyl
26:08And we were in a crew
26:10And we'd go around challenging other crews
26:13Like in the movies, but we were in Oldham
26:17Really, that's kind of what we were
26:19Take That was our crew
26:21We were a break dance crew from the streets of Manchester
26:24Taking on the world
26:27Come on, come on, come on, come on, take that
26:30And party
26:31Come on, come on, come on, come on, take that
26:33For the time, boys!
26:35Take that, Wembley Arena
26:38I think the dance side was 90% of our show
26:44Dancing our arses off
26:45Giving the energy, receiving the energy back
26:49Without that dance element, it wouldn't have been nothing
26:54When you go out to 10,000 streaming people
26:56It just lifts you
26:58And it's difficult sometimes
27:00To stay on the ground, you know
27:02Come on, come on, take that
27:05Come on, come on, come on, come on, come on
27:07Take that, take that, take that, take that, take that
27:11Take that, take that, take that
27:21We'd add a hit
27:23With It Only Takes A Minute Girl
27:25Oh
27:27But it wasn't just hits I wanted
27:32I always dreamt of a copyright
27:35That's what I wanted
27:36See, I wanted it to be there forever
27:39Just done, okay
27:41It's kind of
27:43And there's this song
27:47And I keep coming back to it
27:53But I thought it's just a little dark
27:55It's like a minor key
27:57So I was slightly nervous about it
28:01Gary used to give us these cassettes
28:03Or these demos
28:04But I had a whiteboard fiesta
28:05We were in the car and we put it in the tape machine
28:14We were all so buzzed
28:17So forgive me for the times
28:19I left you, baby
28:22I think we listened to that song on that day
28:24Maybe 20 times
28:26And for all of those times
28:28You searched for my love
28:31After having a couple of misses
28:33It was so important for me to write a hit
28:36Hiding from a word I need to hear now
28:39Because it was my job
28:41I was the songwriter
28:42And by my side
28:44And this song felt like such a risk
28:47It was just like
28:51Is it not too much of a departure, this?
28:56I had a feeling that this is the song
29:02This is the one that's going to take us to that next level
29:06My eyes
29:10And it did
29:11It was our first number one
29:22Congratulations to take that
29:23Straight in at number one with this
29:26Hooray!
29:27Pour vous, take, ja
29:36It was just a real moment for us
29:39Simply the biggest pop band in the UK
29:41The third week at number one
29:42Let's take that
29:43Stayed at number one for four weeks
29:45It was like a proper, proper hit record
29:53If you can't forget the past
29:56I understand that
29:59Can't understand that
30:01Lovely
30:02It felt like it was the moment when
30:05All the different elements that we've been
30:08Sort of trying to work out where does everybody fit
30:10For the last three years
30:12Resume
30:13Came together
30:15That song was the first time we found the sound of take that
30:21All I do each night is pray
30:23All I do each night is pray
30:26Yeah
30:27This is a disc that says that pray has now sold
30:32Over 200,000 copies
30:39This is for the best British single
30:41Best music video
30:45Take that pray
30:47Take that for pray
30:48Take that for joy
30:50Picture me in the time
30:52I am sold for the North
30:56I'm not really very good at speaking so I'll leave this one up to the man Gary Barlow who wrote
31:01the song Grey so...
31:02Nice one, thank you, thank you most of all to all the people that have voted for us, fans are
31:07brilliant, thank you
31:09All of a sudden
31:10We're very privileged so thank you very much
31:12It felt like we were taking over the world
31:19Right, okay, you're about to witness something that you've probably never witnessed before
31:26Well, here I am
31:28I'm in Asia somewhere
31:29Oh, Japan
31:30It's not exactly Stoke-on-Trent, if you know what I mean
31:35What's up, homeboy?
31:37Yeah, you're looking funky today
31:40It's quite nerve-wracking being in a country like this
31:44You know, seeing different cultures in there
31:48Experiencing different places
31:55You start to go to these different countries and your experience of life is growing
32:03Whee!
32:07Whee!
32:08Whee!
32:10Oh, no, I don't want to watch them still
32:11I don't want to see them playing
32:12Fuck, fuck it
32:14I'd not been abroad until I was at the band
32:17We've been all over the world in one year
32:20Okay, welcome aboard everybody
32:21And if you look to the left and right of the dish, you'll see fans everywhere
32:28Probably the best times were just when the five lads were together
32:32And we would laugh
32:36We were a carefree bunch of guys
32:38Travelling round the world, having fun, not taking anything too seriously
32:45Everything was exciting
32:46If it's going to another country
32:48We was travelling through the town at night in the dark
32:51We were, you know, all singing out the top of the sunroof
33:01We were young guys, we were travelling all around the world together
33:06And we became very close
33:08We did
33:10Yeah
33:11Don't get that video camera out on us
33:13Don't get that video camera out on us
33:15Jesus, I know that we've got better things to do
33:18Let's go
33:18Mark is probably the nicest man in history
33:24You know, he was my little buddy
33:30Rob was my best mate
33:31Rob was my best mate
33:32He was very funny, very entertaining, full of life
33:36Every situation was as colourful as it was because Rob was there
33:42What do we say in the audience? Smelly bollocks!
33:46I wanted to be an actor, started acting when I was eight
33:48My mum wanted me to go to college and to university
33:51I didn't get any qualifications
33:53And I knew that she was going to go mad at me
33:56So I auditioned for everything that I could
33:59And one of these scenes was this group called Take That
34:03Yes, London!
34:04You could put Rob in the middle, any on the stage
34:07Take that, mum wondering whether you would like to listen to them, you two
34:14And we could all bounce around him
34:16And he was going to hold the attention of that audience
34:20Dear Robby, leave Take That and become a solo artist
34:22Because I'm sure you could be
34:24Love Robby, he's made it to himself
34:26I'm sure you could be the next George Michael
34:37I used to always stay in the same room as Gary
34:40So me and Gary became friends
34:43Oh, wrong way!
34:45That's what's been going on!
34:47He's always been so enthusiastic about music
34:51Well there we are in New York
34:53And as you can hear there's a racket next door
34:58He knows I'm enthusiastic as well
35:00And I love that, that's been the real great connection with Gary that has
35:05Howard, he was the perfect friend for me
35:08Because he was a great laugh
35:10For all of us, I think
35:11We all found Howard funny
35:15But also, whenever we have new music
35:18It will not sound like Take That
35:20Until Howard's done his backing vocals
35:26Everyone's surprised by that
35:28But it's true
35:30Yep, yep
35:31He's denying it on camera
35:32He's denying it on camera
35:35I really looked up to Jason
35:38He's like my big brother in the band
35:41Listen, these are the rules of the game
35:42I've got to go shout it out, he's one of your cheeks
35:44He kind of looked after the five of us
35:47I'm tired of the band I have to
35:49Took that role on quite well
35:50I'm tired of this band
35:53I'm... I'm... I'm just out of here
35:55Thrown together by Nigel as five individuals
35:59Looking after one another
36:00Building a war round ourselves
36:02Against the rest of the world
36:03See you Sunday
36:04That's what kept us sane
36:07Until we couldn't deal with it anymore
36:10Right Gary, we want to know some serious facts about the new album
36:13Is it finished? What's it called? And when's it coming out?
36:16Now, the label stood there with the hands on the hips
36:19Where's the next number one?
36:21Now, last year you just about swept the boards at the Smash Hits Awards
36:24I mean, do you worry that next year you might not be so popular?
36:29It was...
36:31An unbelievable amount of pressure for me
36:34Erm, the erm...
36:35What was the first question? The album is half finished
36:37The album finished? The album finished
36:40Yeah, yeah, yeah
36:41You suddenly realise
36:44This isn't just me and me four mates singing on a stage
36:48We're a business now
36:50A really big, important
36:52Money-making machine for a lot of people
36:56When will you be satisfied?
37:00When will you be satisfied?
37:05When will you be satisfied?
37:17I want people to be satisfied with me
37:17I really want people to be satisfied with me
37:17I pick up my hands on the label
37:17I wanted them to be happy with me
37:21Wanting Nigel to be happy with me
37:23Wanting to make him proud
37:25Wanting to make the lads so they like the album
37:27You know, it was...
37:28It was a lot, a lot to take on at that age
37:37Thank God we had Gary to write the albums
37:39He was working his arse off, he wasn't getting any free time
37:42He was literally in the studio, releasing an album
37:44Then writing the next album
37:51The way I guarded what I did was
37:55I don't need anyone else to write these songs
37:57I just don't
38:06Rob would often call me with, I've got this idea
38:09He'd sing me this like Oasis song, I'd be like, Rob, Rob, please
38:14If I'm a member of Nirvana, that'd be brilliant
38:16But we'll take that
38:18I've got the formula
38:19I know what we're doing, I know what we're doing next
38:41And I would say out of everyone
38:43He was the one who was trying to lyrically do stuff
38:47And come up with stuff a lot
38:50But no, I never encouraged it
38:53You don't realise that you're a backing dancer
38:57Until a few years in
38:58Go on, go on
39:00I didn't sign up for that
39:01There was a part of me that felt above everybody else
39:05Musically
39:07I don't think as a person
39:10Gary could see how he was
39:12Or how he behaved
39:18What's your name in the middle?
39:21My name's Katrina
39:22And which one of the band is your favourite?
39:24Mark
39:25Why is he your favourite?
39:26He's really cute
39:27He's so gorgeous
39:28Yay, yay Mark!
39:31It was clear how much our audience loved Mark
39:40And so Nigel said, listen, we need a song for Mark
39:44We like that
39:45We like it here
39:50Guys, we were starting to write songs with us in mind
39:53You know, we used to think a little bit more of a band
39:58And Jason was learning the guitar at the time
40:00And so it was a good chance for Jay to learn
40:03And it was a good chance to get Mark going on his vocals
40:06As a lead vocalist
40:13It was the first time I'd gone front and centre
40:16Which was a big thing for me
40:18And also a little bit daunting
40:20When somebody passed you the mic
40:22You couldn't think about it like
40:24Oh God, can I do this?
40:25You took your inspiration from the other guys
40:28Because they made it look like there was no fear
40:32Here, singing Babe
40:34Take that, ladies and gentlemen
40:36Take that
40:40Come to your door
40:43To see you again
40:47But where you once...
40:49It's a big song, big song
40:50For me and for the band
41:10That moment where they take over
41:12And sing you the song
41:14Was, you know, crazy
41:17It was like, wow
41:18I hadn't felt that before then
41:31I think it showed another side to the band
41:34And we were growing
41:39Babe has put Take That in the record books
41:41As the first group to have three consecutive singles
41:44Go straight in at number one
41:47That was the start of our role
41:49Number one, number one
41:51Again
41:51Number one
41:55Just got in at number one
41:58Those moments
41:59They just breed confidence within you as an artist
42:02I was really happy for Mark when he did Babe
42:06I really was
42:07I wasn't even at that train thought
42:10Where thinking, well
42:10Why have I not sung a lead vocal?
42:15Can I have one of these?
42:17Can I have one of these?
42:18He likes that
42:18I like that
42:19Cool
42:21It was also obvious that Rob was getting some attention too
42:25Now, Robbie
42:26Now, you are a good singer
42:28Cheers
42:28You're a great dancer
42:29That's your opinion
42:30Girls love you
42:30You're funny
42:31Thank you
42:31In many ways, you are Mr Perfect
42:33Thank you
42:34So, Nigel came and he said
42:36We haven't got a song for Robbie
42:37He's got to have a song
42:38You know, write something
42:40Your next video, right?
42:42Your next video
42:42Okay, next video
42:44We have a song
42:46Which is doing very well
42:47At the minute
42:47In the European chats
42:48And it's called
42:50Everything Changes
42:52We've got the ones
42:52And the vocals
42:53Take that
42:55We've said goodbye
42:57The taxi cabins
43:05Take that
43:06Looks set to make pop history
43:08With their new single
43:09Everything Changes
43:10So, there you have it
43:16If it reaches number one
43:17It could be Take That's fourth hit in a row to do so
43:20It could be the first band to achieve this beat
43:23Since the Beatles
43:24I think Take That are brilliant
43:25And they should get to number one
43:26Because they're the best band that ever lived
43:28They're wonderful
43:29Number one for the second week in a row
43:32From Manchester, New One
43:33Take That
43:35But you
43:36You know every single day
43:39And we're thinking about you
43:41Suddenly, with a bit of a wave of success
43:43You're just like invincible
43:46Best album, Everything Changes
43:49Well done, boys
43:51It's just like
43:52Give me a pen
43:53I'll write the next one
43:54The first four awards
43:57In this year's Ivor Novellos
43:58Are those chosen by
44:00Panels of Peers
44:02The Songwriter of the Year thing
44:03Congratulations
44:04Thank you
44:05It goes to Gary Barlow
44:09Really, really delighted
44:11It's been a fantastic day
44:12We've had the time of our lives
44:13And I didn't expect any of it
44:15It's mega
44:16I think he deserves this
44:17And I know he'll go on to write
44:18Many, many more great songs
44:20Well done, Gary
44:23In fact, the boys didn't even go with us
44:25Because I said it was going to be boring
44:27I'm not used to talking on my own
44:29I've usually got four other idiots with me
44:32So I phoned them up
44:33Saying, ah, it's brilliant here
44:34I was quite proud at that point
44:38The best group in the entire world
44:41Take that
44:43Thanks to all these boys
44:44For being my best friends
44:46Thanks to our manager
44:47For being the best manager in the world
44:50It really was me
44:52Doing all the music
44:53And it really was Nigel
44:55Making the decisions
44:58Gary was Nigel's number one
45:00And they both supported each other in that
45:06From early on
45:08I had a partnership with Nigel
45:10My name is Stephen
45:15He would always have the beeline for Gary
45:17More than anybody
45:19Because he was a songwriter
45:21And we were just like
45:24Backing dancers of puppets
45:26That made the group
45:33Up until then
45:34It was enough for me
45:35To do some hand movements
45:37And spin on my head
45:38But then I was like
45:39I'm growing up now
45:41Where's your voice in this?
45:50You start learning your own character
45:52Of who you are
45:54And what you want to do
45:56What's going on here?
45:58It's all about piercing
46:00Ladies and gentlemen
46:01It's all about piercing
46:02And then
46:03Bit by bit
46:04The leak was being released
46:09There was lots of self-exploration going on
46:14You know
46:15You were part of a group
46:16You were also trying to find yourself
46:21But the identity of the group got made
46:23Before you'd found your own
46:28I really don't know why I want to be real famous
46:30I've always wanted to be famous
46:32And maybe it's a gap in my life
46:37Maybe there's something missing
46:38And I want people to love me and adore me
46:46It was a very surreal world
46:48That we were living in at that point
46:53Wherever you go
46:54There was people's noise
46:59My home isn't really a home anymore
47:01Because I have like
47:02150 girls outside our house
47:04And I have to basically
47:06I sit in my bedroom
47:07I just sit in my room
47:08Have a look outside this window
47:13The chaos that was outside the hotels
47:16You're in bed and they're singing
47:18You're the take that song
47:19Was at your window all night long
47:21I love you
47:24Some weird world
47:25And you don't even know who you are anymore
47:29It's quite lonely really
47:32To walk down the street now
47:34It's just a nightmare
47:37At the end of the day
47:38You want to leave that behind
47:40For say five minutes
47:41Just five minutes please
47:43Nobody
47:44Please don't touch me for five minutes
47:46I love you Jason
47:49I love you Jason
47:52The more successful we became
47:54Bigger the audience is
47:59Bigger the stages
48:00We had more lights
48:02More glitz
48:02More glamour
48:03More paraphernalia
48:08But
48:08In and amongst your excited
48:10Positive feelings
48:11There's always a feeling of
48:14Is this really happening
48:15And should it really be happening
48:18And should I be feeling happier
48:21It was tremendous pressure really
48:27And then with all this chaos
48:29That's going on around us
48:32We had our biggest hit
48:34The biggest band in the land
48:36Ladies and gentlemen
48:36They need no introduction
48:37They're back
48:38For good
48:40I guess
48:42Now it's time
48:45For me to give up
48:46Back for good was such a big song for us
48:49It immediately became our biggest hit
48:52It was the song that took us on show
49:02Without letting it
49:03Ladies and gentlemen
49:03Take that
49:04I mean we had a number one in 31 countries
49:11Top ten in America
49:12That was the pinnacle
49:14I think that song was
49:15And the winners
49:16Of the best tingle are
49:21Take that
49:22Take that
49:23Yes
49:23It felt like as a band
49:25We've reached the top of the mountain
49:27But it was also
49:28The beginning of the end
49:30For us as a band
49:41You could sense that
49:42There was a change coming
49:44You could put the five of us
49:45In a room when we were younger
49:50But now everybody
49:51Wanted their own space
49:55Egos became too inflated
49:59Things became too chaotic
50:03I said are you tired
50:05And you went
50:05In a minute
50:06We're having a domestic
50:07And tensions just started to come about
50:11Amongst us all
50:12Get out
50:13Get out
50:16At this point now
50:21Your head's thinking
50:22How long can this last?
50:27Whatever I said
50:29Whatever I did
50:30I didn't mean it
50:31I just want you back for good
50:34I want you back
50:35I want you back
50:36I want you back for good
50:39Whatever I'm wrong
50:41Just tell me the song
50:42And I'm singing
50:43You'll be right and understood
50:46I want you back for good
50:48See I want you back for good
50:52Whenever I'm wrong
50:53Just tell me the song
50:54I'm singing
50:55You'll be right and understood
50:57I want you back
50:58I want you back
51:00You'll be right and understood
51:01I want you back for good
51:03You'll be right and understood
51:06Oh yeah
51:10I guess now it's time
51:13That you came back for good
51:26I want you back for good
51:27I want you back for good
51:27I want you back for good
51:27I want you back for good
51:28I want you back for good
51:28I want you back for good
51:28I want you back for good
51:29I want you back for good
51:30I want you back for good
51:30I want you back for good
