00:00Kia ora, my name is Toby Buchanan and you're listening to episode six of my
00:05true crime podcast, Small Town Scandal. Now before I get into anything I think I
00:12need to explain to you listeners a little bit about my family history. So
00:17there's me, Toby, and then my parents Bruce Buchanan and Sue Buchanan need
00:22Watkins. But who we're interested in is Bruce's brother, my uncle Mitch. Mitch
00:27was good at school, good at sports, popular with the boys and very popular
00:31with the girls and later very savvy at business. My dad Bruce on the other hand
00:36liked to escape the realities of life with substances of varying degrees. And
00:42then everything came to a head when my father, highly intoxicated, accidentally
00:47set a block of shops in town on fire. The town absolutely hated him. He went to
00:53prison for seven years and after that my mum left him and dad went to Cairns to
00:59avoid his reputation. But like Cain and Abel, did he come back to town and brutally
01:04murder the star of said town? And his brother, Uncle Mitch?
01:13But now I'd just been tipped off that dad was lurking in the park commemorating the very fire
01:18he started. And here I was thinking he was still in Australia, like some chump.
01:25Dad! Dad! Dad!
01:28Where is he?
01:29Dad!
01:31Dad!
01:32Dad!
01:35This chick who's not some crannies, Constable,
01:37because he's a slip-brick.
01:39Oh, jeez.
01:42What are you doing here?
01:45Just, uh, some fitness.
01:48Well, we're looking for your dad. Apparently he was spotted around here and we want to
01:54talk to him.
01:54Wow, really?
01:58You weren't looking for him as well, by chance?
02:03Dad?
02:05Yeah.
02:05No.
02:06Nah.
02:07My dad, no, no.
02:09Um, he's over in Cairns anyway.
02:12So, we're looking for your dad in a park. You just happen to be doing fitnessin'?
02:20Uh, yeah. I do fitness here all the time.
02:24Oh, what kind of fitness?
02:26Power walking.
02:27Power walking, that's old school. Good on you.
02:31Yeah.
02:31You look great.
02:33Anyway, Sarge, listen, I better keep going, keep the heart rate up.
02:36You have to, don't you?
02:37Yeah, yeah.
02:37It's really effective that way, isn't it?
02:40Good luck with your man, hon.
02:49Dad!
02:51Oh, Toad.
02:52Oh, oh.
02:52It's so good to see.
02:54Yeah, yeah.
02:55It's good, it's good to see you too, Dad.
02:57The pigs are after me.
02:59Yeah.
02:59Okay, first things first.
03:02Did you kill Uncle Mitch?
03:03No.
03:04Uh, no.
03:05I didn't.
03:06Oh, thank Christ.
03:08Then why are you in the country?
03:10Well, I got in a bit of trouble over in Ausland.
03:12I thought Mitch might be able to help me out with a bit of a pickle.
03:16Oh, shit.
03:17Can you help me get out of here, son?
03:18Please.
03:19Look, if you didn't kill Uncle Mitch, then we should go and tell the pigs.
03:22I didn't kill him.
03:24But I was there when he died.
03:28Come on, come on, come on.
03:30Let's get out of here.
03:30Oh, jeez.
03:32Oh, shit.
03:34Oh, shit.
03:35Oh, shit.
03:36Oh, shit.
03:36Oh, shit.
03:36Oh, shit.
03:37Oh, shit.
03:37Oh, shit.
03:37Oh, shit.
03:37Oh, shit.
03:42I don't even know where to go.
03:43I've been staying at the town dump.
03:45Why?
03:46It's cheap.
03:47Actually, it's free.
03:49It's perfectly sound mattresses people have just thrown away.
03:52Okay, yeah, okay.
03:57Shit.
03:58You're still dead.
04:01Hi.
04:02Hi.
04:03It's me, Anna.
04:04Um, Katie was trying to set us up at dinner.
04:06Yeah, that's all right.
04:10Shit, what's all that fabric?
04:12Uh, that's, um, chill.
04:15Chill?
04:15Yeah.
04:16What do you need that for?
04:17Uh, my mum's a seamstress.
04:18Really?
04:20Wow.
04:21What does she make?
04:22Listen, I've actually got to go.
04:23I'm so sorry.
04:24Wait, how's your podcast going?
04:26Yeah, good.
04:28Yeah?
04:30Hey, have you listened to the latest episode of Will the Real Mrs Moth Please Stand Up?
04:34No, I haven't.
04:35Oh, it's so good.
04:36It goes into intense detail about the mole pattern she carves on her victims.
04:39And it's been confirmed she is in tail oil.
04:42I'm sorry.
04:43I'm so sorry.
04:43I've got to get going.
04:53She seemed nice.
04:56I don't even know where to begin, Dad.
04:58What happened at Oz?
05:00Uh, one of my mates died.
05:03We were having a great party.
05:05We were completely maggoted.
05:06Suddenly, he just slipped and fell to his death.
05:09Oh, I didn't stick around.
05:11Because I didn't think I had the emotional capacity to deal with any kind of investigation.
05:17Cops found out I was there, wanting to talk a lot.
05:20I didn't want to talk to them.
05:21I thought Mitch might be able to get me one of them top lawyers.
05:25Why?
05:25He owed me, Tobes, big time.
05:28If I didn't worship the ground he walked on, I would have murdered Mitch years ago.
05:44Home sweet home.
05:46Yeah.
05:49Mattress got a bit wet.
05:51It's a bit mouldy.
05:52But apart from that, everything's fine.
05:54Yeah.
05:55It's a good set up.
05:57Oh, you think so?
05:58Yeah.
05:59Yeah.
05:59I might sit outside.
06:01It's just...
06:01Forever a few, son.
06:16In any way, Dad, just...
06:17Look, just tell me everything.
06:19Okay?
06:19And then we can come up with a plan.
06:21So you were at the mansion when Mitch died?
06:25Mitch didn't know I was coming.
06:26I was feeling a bit bloody nervous about it all.
06:33Mitch was a busy man, so I had to pick my moment carefully.
06:41Yeah.
06:42Apparently he's still faffing about at his mother, so we'll get him in straight away.
06:47I don't care.
06:48My nephew, unfortunately.
06:51Just find him something managerial.
06:53And do it now.
06:57Yeah, Toby, I was hoping to get hard of you.
07:00Come round to the mansion this afternoon, will ya?
07:03I wanna talk to you about something.
07:05See ya, too.
07:08Hang on.
07:10What are you doing here?
07:14Mitchie.
07:16Listen, Bruce.
07:16Whatever you want.
07:18I can't help ya.
07:19It's not that I want something, but...
07:23Lord, the timing.
07:26Wait here.
07:30Let's go.
07:36Yeah.
07:41What?
07:42What?
07:45Let's go.
07:47Let's go.
07:47What?
07:50Let's go.
07:54What?
07:54There.
08:00So whoever was driving the vehicle with the trailer, that's who killed Uncle Mitch.
08:05I didn't get much more than a glimpse of him.
08:07It's pretty bloody obvious who it would be.
08:12Who?
08:20Jed Jamison.
08:23Who?
08:24Jed Jamison.
08:25I've never heard of this person.
08:27Oh, he's your uncle's rival back in the day.
08:30Bumped into him in town more long after I got back.
08:35It was just before Mitch he died.
08:38Jed Jamison.
08:41I just want to apologise.
08:44You know, because when that old building was...
08:46Remember that big fire in Tohoiho?
08:49That one-year-old man started.
08:54It wasn't an accident.
08:57Me and Mitch did it on purpose.
08:59He agreed to pay off my debts if I took all the blame.
09:04Why?
09:05Jed was edging Mitch out of the motor mowing business.
09:08He developed a prototype of his own automated mower.
09:12Mitchie was going to have none of that.
09:14We decided to burn the whole block down so it wouldn't seem so targeted.
09:20Jed out of the picture.
09:22Mitchie could patent his own automated mower.
09:25They use millions that way.
09:28So, there you go.
09:29Big family secret for you, son.
09:32Wait.
09:34Jed Jamison.
09:36There was that note on Uncle Mitch's desk.
09:39Jay!
09:40Okay.
09:41So, I had a new lead suspect.
09:43Jed Jamison.
09:45I've done a little bit of online sleuthing and I found a registered address for Jed's Gardening Services Limited business.
09:52Right?
09:52And it's about an hour south of Tohoiho.
09:55So, that's where I'm heading.
09:57No thank...
10:00Yeah, I've just been talking with Sergeant Brown.
10:02He said you were down at the park where your dad was spotted.
10:04Um, no, well, nah, I...
10:06Well, you told me he was down there.
10:07I was just hoping to help.
10:09Oh, yeah.
10:09Was it a nice father-son reunion?
10:11Well, no, it wasn't because I didn't run into it.
10:13I didn't see him there.
10:14So, no, it wasn't.
10:15Oh, cut the crap, Tubbs.
10:17Listen, if you're helping a criminal on the run,
10:19you're not just playing with fire, mate.
10:20You're practically juggling...
10:24chainsaws.
10:24Yeah, okay.
10:25Well, thanks for your concern, but I think I'll be fine.
10:28Um, okay, bye, Matt.
10:29See ya.
10:30Yeah.
10:31Okay, so, Jed's address is about an hour south of Tohoiho in the...
10:36Jake?
10:37You still making that flaming podcast?
10:40Tubbs!
10:42Ah!
10:46Oh, my God.
10:47Oh, shit.
10:48Oh, shit.
10:50What?
10:52Um...
10:54Are you all right?
10:56I am so sorry, sir.
10:58I did not...
10:59I...
10:59I...
11:00Why are you Jed from Jed's Mowing Services Limited?
11:03Please ask.
11:04My name is Toby, and I'm an invest...
11:06Well, I'm a journalist.
11:08And I was hoping to talk to you, actually,
11:10about your former business and,
11:12well, what happened to it?
11:23Was that a yes?
11:28As a journalist, you sometimes forget safety in the chase of a scoop.
11:39You're still there?
11:41Yes.
11:43That's how I ended up in a stranger's cabin in the middle of nowhere.
11:51The interior of Jed Jemison's cabin's a little bit spooky.
11:58Did you tell anyone you were coming to see me?
12:02No, I didn't.
12:06I mean, yes, I did.
12:08Um, I've told loads of people.
12:10Come on.
12:15Oh.
12:28Quite a few animal skins around the place.
12:32It's me passion.
12:34Killing pests.
12:36There.
12:37Lots of possums and, uh, other things.
12:43Right.
12:45So...
12:46You used to have a business, yeah?
12:49Yes.
12:51Until the great Ta-Hoy-Hoe birthing.
12:54That's right.
12:56Yeah.
12:58That must have been so upsetting for you when that happens.
13:03That fire...
13:05Was the best thing that ever happened to me.
13:08It was?
13:09Well,
13:10My business had never burned down.
13:13I'd never ended up here.
13:15Paradise.
13:19Do you have any thoughts on...
13:21Mitch Buchanan?
13:26What was that?
13:28A weasel in one of me traps.
13:33What did you say you were here for again?
13:36I am, uh, sorry, yeah.
13:39I'm doing some research,
13:40because I'm writing Mitch Buchanan's obituary.
13:45Mitch Buchanan was a dirty weasel.
13:49Who ever killed him was a hero.
13:52He did the world a favor.
13:54Wait, how did you know he was killed?
13:59It's only a matter of time.
14:02Those Buchanans are a bad bunch.
14:05Every last one of them.
14:07Well, I don't know if...
14:10The only good Buchanan is a dead Buchanan.
14:17What did you say your name was again?
14:20Me?
14:21I'm Toby.
14:23Toby.
14:25Jedson.
14:26Jed.
14:27I'm Toby Jedson.
14:31Jedson.
14:43Jed Jedson was clearly guilty,
14:45revenging Uncle Mitch for the Great Fire of 96,
14:48which my father started for him.
14:50And two of those little bottles of daddy I saw.
14:52Before I went public with this bombshell, though,
14:54I stopped to get some food,
14:56because Dad was probably starving.
14:58But, as I was driving to him,
15:00I spied my old friends,
15:02the Popo.
15:04Didn't take long to realise they were tailing me.
15:06With the delicious smell of fish and chips filling the car,
15:09I knew I had to start thinking smarter
15:11if I was to protect Dad.
15:13I tried to throw them off the scent,
15:15but they were like a goddamn dog with a bone.
15:19Always sniffing,
15:20circling,
15:21and seemingly one step ahead.
15:23But they weren't going to trap this little weasel
15:25if I had anything to do with it.
15:45Matt, just the person I was hoping to run into.
15:48Listen, I think I've worked out who killed Uncle Mitch.
15:50His name is Jed Jamison,
15:52and he was an ex-business rival of his,
15:54and basically I've got a taped confession out of him.
15:56It's not Jed.
15:57No, it is.
15:58Jed hated Mitch,
15:59he loves killing things,
16:00and basically he's...
16:01Hub, Jed's as blind as a mole.
16:03Is he?
16:06He's still here!
16:11Paradise.
16:12Oh my God, he is blind.
16:15Look, uh,
16:16I'm only going to ask you one last time.
16:18Where's your dad?
16:19I don't know where he is, jeez.
16:22No?
16:23Okay.
16:24What are you twaddling off to then,
16:25with this big bag of greasies?
16:28I'm visiting my friend,
16:30bringing where...
16:31they live here.
16:33They live here?
16:34Yes.
16:34It's your mate's house?
16:35Yes.
16:36So you didn't just turn into a random driveway
16:39because you saw me following you?
16:40No.
16:41Well, don't let me stop you.
16:43I beg your pardon?
16:44Well, go on.
16:46They'll be waiting, won't they?
16:47Yeah, they will.
16:48Okay, well,
16:50it was good to...
16:51it was good to see...
16:54Jed.
17:05Oh, they mustn't be home.
17:06I must have got the wrong date or something,
17:08I think.
17:12Toby Buchanan?
17:14Mrs. Pettigrew?
17:15And is that, uh,
17:18Matt McKenzie?
17:20My goodness, what a surprise.
17:23Have you come to arrest me?
17:25That depends, Mrs. Pettigrew.
17:27From what I remember,
17:28you're a bit of a grammar gangster.
17:31Come and see our old English teacher, have you?
17:35I thought you'd show up here eventually, Buchanan.
17:39After all these years,
17:41you've finally come to apologise.
17:46Yes.
17:52I'll have two sugar cubes, please.
18:03Right.
18:05I'm ready.
18:07For my apology.
18:10Yes.
18:12Um, okay.
18:14I am so...
18:18sorry...
18:20for what...
18:21for what I did.
18:25You should be embarrassed.
18:27I am.
18:29A 13-year-old should know better.
18:32Where was your self-control,
18:33your self-respect?
18:35I don't know where it was.
18:36That jar of lollipops
18:38was for the whole class, Toby.
18:41You didn't leave any
18:42for the other students.
18:44No, I didn't.
18:45In fact,
18:46I think you should apologise
18:48to Matt as well.
18:49Matt?
18:51What's that?
18:54Matt,
18:55I'm so sorry
18:56for the pain
18:57I caused you
18:58by eating all the lollipops
18:59in the jar
19:00in third form English.
19:02Actually,
19:02you were repeating that here,
19:04weren't you, Matt?
19:05You know what?
19:05Um,
19:06thanks for the tea,
19:07Mrs P.
19:08Uh,
19:09I think I'd better shoot off.
19:10Wait, where are you going?
19:11I've got police business, mate.
19:12Police business till 10-2.
19:14So,
19:14yeah.
19:17Historical apologies aside,
19:18I was sick with worry
19:19about Matt
19:20and his texting.
19:21Something fishy was going on
19:23and I'm not talking
19:24about the second batch
19:25of fish and chips
19:25I had to buy.
19:26And then two of those
19:27little puddles
19:27of tartare sauce.
19:29And would you like
19:30to add the seven spring rolls?
19:32Again?
19:34Yeah, I would.
19:44I assumed I'd found Dad
19:46at the landfill
19:46and we were about
19:47to arrest him.
19:49I followed them feebly
19:51with no real plan.
19:53Maybe I could talk
19:54them out of it?
19:55Maybe I could steal a gun,
19:57bust Dad out,
19:58hijack a boat
19:58and then flee to a Pacific island?
20:01But then,
20:02to my surprise,
20:03they weren't headed
20:04to the landfill at all.
20:05Or anywhere near
20:06Dad's hideout.
20:09Instead,
20:09they were heading to
20:12Mrs. Pettigrew's house.
20:16Yeah,
20:17hard to say,
20:17like, yeah.
20:19I think just bag it all up
20:20and we'll take it
20:20down the station.
20:22Oh, don't miss this.
20:23There's a few bits in there.
20:24You know how to look
20:25in the freezer?
20:25Ah, it's nice.
20:26You did in there for
20:27we bag it all up.
20:27Hey, chuck it in this one.
20:28Just did this one.
20:29Easy, Mrs. P.
20:30You.
20:31Watch your head,
20:31Mrs. P.
20:32Wait.
20:34I'll get you.
20:36Tubbs.
20:37What are you doing here?
20:39Well, you just saw the lights.
20:39What's happening?
20:40Mate.
20:41I got her.
20:43Mrs. Moth.
20:45Mrs. Pettigrew,
20:46our old English teacher,
20:48is Mrs. Moth.
20:50You know,
20:50like from a podcast.
20:52Yeah.
20:53Killed an estimated 25 people
20:54around New Zealand
20:55since the 80s.
20:56I don't understand.
20:58Well, I've kind of got you
20:58to thank for it,
20:59don't I?
20:59I mean,
20:59you led me right to her.
21:00See,
21:01when we were sitting in there
21:02earlier,
21:02something caught my eye.
21:04It was the tea sun
21:05in the sugar bowl.
21:07That's what I remembered.
21:08Mrs. Moth liked to carve
21:09that very insignia
21:10into her victims.
21:12So,
21:13thank God you're in the habit
21:14of getting that extra sugar,
21:15eh, Tubbs?
21:16So that's it then?
21:17It was her that killed Uncle Mitch?
21:19Oh, no, no, no.
