00:01The Phillies today named Don Mattingly as the interim manager. He's the 57th manager.
00:07He replaces Rob Thompson who was let go earlier today by Dave Dombrowski.
00:12He's a wonderful person, done a lot, works hard, very conscientious.
00:16But I think at this time I felt that we needed a new voice in there.
00:19A little different feeling in the clubhouse at this point.
00:24Rob was the first to admit that he doesn't know what's really going on.
00:27He's a little bit surprised on how we performed.
00:30But I just thought at this time was the right time to get a different voice
00:35with some different direction.
00:37With a lot of the common, of course Don's been part of our staff here all along.
00:41So he's got a pulse of his feelings on how we can perhaps improve a little bit here,
00:46a little bit there.
00:47Just a different overall as anybody would be coming in.
00:50But I think it was just that we needed a different voice in there.
00:53A few years ago, four years ago, he was the right voice for us
00:57with the club that we had.
00:58There was no question about it and he's done it very well.
01:00I think we needed a different voice with this group where we are right now.
01:04As Don Mattingly will embark on his trail of being the skipper of the Philadelphia Phillies.
01:10Jesus Lozardo making the start.
01:13Jesus has not had the start, much like the Phillies as a team,
01:16has not had the start that he anticipated with an ERA of 6.91.
01:21And some of it is rooted in his home starts.
01:23He's 0-3 with a 10.69 ERA here at Citizens Bank Park.
01:30Swing and a foul tip.
01:31He got him.
01:31There were two outs.
01:32First strikeout for Lozardo.
01:35Round ball back towards second.
01:37This is a nice six pitch hitting.
01:39So a 1-2-3 start for Lozardo will go to the bottom of the first.
01:43And for Tyler Malley, 1-3 with a 5-2-6.
01:46Twenty-six strikeouts on 25 and two-thirds.
01:48Coming off a really good start against the Dodgers.
01:50Slaps it the other way.
01:51Based in it to right field.
01:52He's got a four-game hitting streak.
01:54The Phillies start off on the right note.
01:56He's over.
01:57Skies run way up there.
01:59Jung-Hoo Lee sort of just loping over.
02:03And he does have room to make the catch in foul ground.
02:07No way.
02:08One gone.
02:08Turner still at first.
02:10Nothing, nothing.
02:10Bottom of the first here in Philadelphia as Bryce Harper stands in.
02:14Slow chop.
02:15Going to be a tough play.
02:17Who's going to take it?
02:17Chapman.
02:18He get the out there.
02:19Now with Malley hustling over.
02:22And he's out.
02:23Wow, what a play.
02:26Devers made the throw.
02:27Malley was like a wide receiver running a pattern.
02:30Caught it on the move.
02:32And somehow got a tag down on Turner who was trying to take third.
02:36Top of the first inning.
02:38Seven pitches, seven strikes.
02:39Pretty good.
02:40Swing and a foul tip.
02:42Second strikeout.
02:43Five up, five down.
02:45Pitchers, they've got to stop to go deep in games.
02:48It's a matter of performing and executing.
02:50Broke his bat.
02:51Ground ball back toward the middle.
02:52Right where Stott was standing.
02:55Another quick inning.
02:56Another quick inning.
02:56And there's another 1-2-3 inning for Jesus Lizardo.
02:59Six up, six down.
03:00Bottom of the second inning.
03:02Needed only 11 pitches to get through that first inning.
03:05Two down.
03:05And a swing and a miss.
03:07Struck him out.
03:08A high fastball for Tyler Malley.
03:11His first strikeout.
03:13Top of the third inning was scoreless.
03:14And Jesus Lizardo.
03:16He's faced six.
03:16He's retired six.
03:17He's got a couple strikeouts.
03:19He lights that one into the gap in right center field.
03:21And that one's going to go to the wall.
03:23There's that swing.
03:24He'll ease into second with a leadoff double.
03:26And that's the first hit of the game for the Giants.
03:29Now here's where it's going to get interesting for Lizardo.
03:31Because everyone says, you know, someone on base, they pick his pitches.
03:35The opposition is hitting 367 against him when there are runners on base.
03:40And with runners in scoring position, they're hitting 423.
03:44Swing and a miss.
03:45He got him at the sweep.
03:47That's three strikeouts.
03:48Comes the catcher, Patrick Bailey.
03:50Swing and a miss.
03:52It was in the dirt.
03:52He can run if he wants to.
03:55That's four strikeouts.
03:57And that's huge.
03:58Get a leadoff double double by Ramos.
04:01And then you punch out the next two guys.
04:03But Ramos stay and put a second.
04:05Check swing.
04:06Did he go?
04:06Yes, he did.
04:07Says the third umpire.
04:08And after the leadoff double, Luzardo comes back and strikes out the side.
04:13And Alec Bohm was starting the night hitting 143.
04:16Base hit for Alec Bohm.
04:18Called strike three.
04:20Crawford, I think, was thinking about it.
04:22Doesn't challenge.
04:24Maybe he should have one out.
04:26And that's a strikeout from Alec.
04:27His second.
04:27And that's the first out here in the third.
04:29One hop backhand.
04:30What a play by Arise.
04:31Flips to second.
04:32On to first.
04:33Double play.
04:34Terrific play by Luis Arise on the backhand.
04:38He straightened up.
04:39Got to Adamas.
04:40Adamas the first.
04:41And a beautiful 4-6-3 double play.
04:44Jesus Luzardo.
04:4535 pitches to get through three scoreless.
04:48Gave up just one hit thus far.
04:50Swing and a miss.
04:51He overpowered him.
04:52Ninety-nine on the fourth Seymour.
04:54Well, that's six strikeouts.
04:56Here is Luis Arise who grounded the second his first time up.
05:00Arise out towards left center field into the gap.
05:02And that's a hit for Luis Arise.
05:04Marsh does cut it off.
05:06Spins and throws.
05:07Arise, though, in the second with a one-out double.
05:10Arise just continues to hit.
05:12That's his third double of the year.
05:15He's got a couple of triples.
05:16Bounce over to third.
05:17Bone backs up on it.
05:21So now Devers.
05:23And the runner is going to third.
05:24The pitch is bounced towards third ball charges.
05:27Picks it on the short hop.
05:28Throws to first.
05:29And a good stretch there by Harper.
05:31Trey getting a couple hits.
05:33A great sign is three out of the first four innings.
05:36We've had the leadoff hitter on.
05:37The bad thing is they've gone on but they haven't really moved.
05:41Right.
05:42And ball four.
05:43First walk issued by Malley.
05:45All four.
05:46And it loads the bases up.
05:47Second walk of the inning.
05:49You know, you get a base hit, two walks.
05:51You've got a capital on it.
05:53Now Phillies are only hitting .218 with runners in scoring position this year.
05:58Brandon, one for two this year with the bases loaded.
06:01Shoots it the other way.
06:02Ramos going over toward the corner.
06:05And he'll make the catch.
06:06Tagging from third is Turner.
06:08And the Phillies have taken the lead.
06:10It's a sack fly.
06:12One-nothing.
06:12Here comes Bryson Stott.
06:14Stott struck out his first time up.
06:17Strike three called.
06:18Stott's going to challenge.
06:20The batter is challenging the call strike.
06:22This one's really close.
06:24ABS powered by T-Mobile.
06:27Big call.
06:28And it's a strike.
06:30Perfect pitch on the outside corner.
06:32And he gets the strikeout.
06:34This has been a refreshing start for Jesus.
06:37Yeah, we might get someone in the seventh inning.
06:39Knock on wood.
06:40Swing and a miss.
06:41That's seven strikeouts.
06:43Six straight retired.
06:46Three called.
06:47He got it looking.
06:48And a birthday hat trick for Matt Chapman.
06:52Not what he was hoping for.
06:54He's through six scoreless innings tonight.
06:57Giants behind one-nothing.
06:58Tyler Mallee did a good job of getting through the fourth inning.
07:02Tough inning.
07:03Only allowing the one run.
07:04That ball four.
07:06And Shorter walks for the second time.
07:09And a first and second.
07:10You got your three hitter coming up at Bryce.
07:13You can't settle for one.
07:15This is.
07:16They had to.
07:17They did it in with the sacrifice fly by Marsh in the fourth.
07:20But this is where you have to think multi-run inning.
07:23Fly ball left field.
07:24Ramos on the run.
07:25Will he get there?
07:26He will not.
07:27It's a fair ball.
07:28Oh.
07:28They got by him.
07:29Yeah.
07:29Turner will score.
07:31Schwarber's held a third.
07:32RBI double for Harper.
07:35Two-nothing.
07:36Bills.
07:37Harper's now reached base safely at 16 of his last 20 games.
07:41Now the infield is halfway with Garcia up and nobody out.
07:46Fly ball right center field.
07:48Hit well.
07:48Gilbert going back.
07:49It is off the base of the wall.
07:52Two runs will score.
07:54Garcia gone the second.
07:56And he's there standing.
07:58Four-nothing Phillies.
07:59A two-run double.
08:01That's his 150th double of his career.
08:04It will also chase Tyler Mallee from the ball game.
08:08Left-hander Matt Gage.
08:09A 33-year-old making his 13th appearance so far this year.
08:13So two on for Alec Baum.
08:16Baum was one for two tonight with a single and a ground out.
08:19Out.
08:19Out toward left field.
08:21Ramos going back.
08:22And it's over his head.
08:24And one hop off the wall.
08:26Garcia will score.
08:27It's an RBI double for Baum.
08:30Five-nothing.
08:31Buzardo was the last starter to record an out in the seventh inning.
08:35And he's done so here tonight.
08:37Popped up.
08:38Right side of the infield.
08:41Scott says he has it.
08:42Ten in a row.
08:43Retired by Buzardo.
08:45If only the second time this year a Philly starting pitcher
08:48has gone six and two thirds in a game.
08:50Luzardo's one out away from reaching seven innings for the first time in 2026.
08:57On the ground to second base.
08:59Stock to a knee.
09:00Throws to first.
09:02And for the first time this year a Philly starter has gone seven innings in a ball game.
09:09He'd 11 in a row.
09:11Retired.
09:11Stolen base number three for Marsh.
09:14And then Justin Crawford who was 0 for three will be the hitter.
09:16Swung on.
09:17Little floater into right.
09:18It's out of the reach of a rise and a base hit.
09:20Marsh coming around third.
09:22He's being waved home.
09:23The throw is not in time.
09:25As Justin Crawford with an RBI single to tack on a run at six nothing.
09:30And Marshawn is aboard with a two out walk.
09:32That'll put two on for Trey Turner.
09:35Trey has three hits tonight.
09:37Two runs scored.
09:38Line drive.
09:39Base hit back through the middle.
09:40Crawford's around third.
09:41He's going to score.
09:43And the Phillies add on.
09:44It's seven nothing.
09:46A four hit night for Trey.
09:48Tim Mazza is on.
09:50And there are two down.
09:51And Matt Chapman one more chance to get himself a hit here on his birthday.
09:57Swing and a miss.
09:58He got him.
09:59Phillies interim manager Don Mattingly victorious in his debut with the Phillies.
10:04As the Jesus Luzardo and the Phillies bullpen shut down the Giants in a seven to nothing win.
