00:00Coach Jim Laranaga is the winningest head coach at the University of Miami men's basketball program history,
00:07and we are lucky enough to have him join us on Wednesdays for a full hour on the program.
00:14Hello, Coach.
00:16Hello, Hawk. How are you guys doing?
00:18I mean, we started the show today.
00:21We've gone in a bunch of directions in just an hour, but we started the show today.
00:25We were talking off the air, and Crowder said to me, this Victor Wimbanyama is the greatest thing that I've
00:32ever seen.
00:32Coach, it's amazing.
00:34And we've had this conversation, Coach. You're not ready to buy in yet.
00:38Coach, Shaq, Kobe, I've watched Jordan. Wimbanyama is special.
00:44Okay, so he's special.
00:46But when you're going to put him in like the greatest of all time conversation,
00:52let's talk about the greatest of all time, just big guys, not even Jordan and LeBron.
00:58Will Chamberlain. Did he ever win a world championship?
01:02Yes.
01:03Yes.
01:03Bill Russell.
01:05Yes.
01:05Shaq.
01:06Yes.
01:07Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
01:09Yes.
01:10Hakeem Olajuwon.
01:11Yes.
01:12I mean, you go down the list, the great ones propel their teams.
01:18What?
01:18Nothing.
01:19It was Versaulana.
01:20Ma'am had a bio.
01:22It would be great if we could include him in this conversation.
01:26But just think about, wait a minute, Crowder.
01:29Look, you got more guys, Tim Duncan and David Robinson.
01:36And when you want to include Wendy, let's give him a year or two to take the Spurs to a
01:44championship.
01:45Solana pointed out he only had five buckets last night.
01:51That doesn't seem to me like the greatest of all time.
01:5617 points.
01:58I haven't seen.
01:59I love Shaq.
02:01Shaq is one of my best.
02:02He's my favorite player.
02:03I have Shaq jerseys.
02:05Coach, I haven't seen a seven-foot-two guy take the ball at the top of the key, crawl somebody
02:11over, spin move, through the leg, and dunk on him.
02:14Like, the stuff he does is so amazing at his size.
02:17That's why I think we love him.
02:19So if you want to call him the most versatile of all time, the most skilled of all time, that
02:28doesn't make him the best of all time.
02:31It does make him unique.
02:33He is special that way.
02:35But let's let him grow up a little bit and win a couple of championships.
02:38And I think he's going to do that.
02:40Oh, yeah.
02:41But it wouldn't be out of the question that he's in that conversation one day, just from what you've seen
02:46in a couple of seasons.
02:47Yeah, he's in that conversation now.
02:50You're seeing a young man that has all the necessary skills, competitive spirit, and I think he's being very well
03:02coached.
03:03And he's coming along very, very nicely.
03:06They've surrounded him with some good pieces.
03:09But they're not the best team in the NBA right now, in my opinion.
03:13OKC, I'm guessing?
03:14Yeah, I think OKC is – when they're healthy, they're the best team.
03:20San Antonio is the only team that's advanced so far, though, right?
03:23They're the only team that's closed out their series?
03:25No, OKC swept Phoenix.
03:29You see any team in the East being able to beat OKC or San Antonio?
03:36Well, first of all, some of these games – you guys were talking about it a little bit earlier.
03:42Yeah, the 76ers winning in Boston.
03:45I mean, how does that happen?
03:48You know, Embiid was terrific.
03:49And as you guys so smartly pointed out, the threes did not fall from Boston, and they're a three-point
03:58shooting team.
04:00It's a 3-0-5.
04:01Dolly.
04:02Dolly.
04:02Dolly.
04:03God bless you.
04:04Dolly.
04:07Dolly.
04:08Thank you, Jimmy.
04:09You're welcome.
04:10It's 3-0-5, Coach.
04:12That's sponsored by Miami Lakes Chevrolet, where you walk in as a customer and drive out as family.
04:19Continue.
04:21Well, when you are a three-point shooting team and you have a bad shooting night, there's a good chance
04:27you're going to lose.
04:29And that's the funny thing.
04:31You compare the NBA to, let's say, college, Michigan wins the national championship basically just putting it in the paint
04:39repeatedly over and over again.
04:41And even when they shot threes and missed, the offensive rebounded and scored.
04:46So, is there anybody in the East that can do that to beat OKC?
04:53Probably not.
04:54The issue, though, is that Jalen Brown and Jason Tatum, individually, they should be able to mitigate, in theory, the
05:02Celtics not shooting well.
05:03But what we've seen thus far is that they haven't been able to do that, in this series at least
05:09against Philadelphia.
05:10Like, in theory, those two guys, even if, you know, Peyton Pritchard goes one of eight from beyond the arc
05:16and Derek White kind of continues his slump and, you know, they're not knocking down threes as a team.
05:21Those two just individually should be able to elevate the Celtics, but they haven't been able to do that.
05:25And against OKC, like, that's what they do.
05:28SGA provides that.
05:30Victor Wemba-Nyama, De'Aaron Fox, they provide that.
05:32Even when the teams struggle, they continue to win games.
05:36Yeah, well, here's one of the things.
05:39The Celtics are where they are because Jason Tatum miraculously came back from his ACL injury.
05:47What was it, Achilles?
05:48Achilles.
05:49Yeah, Achilles.
05:50And how many guys can come back in less than a year and then play and perform at as high
05:59a level as he's able to do?
06:01Now, he's not 100% still, in my mind.
06:04No, and he's going to have more games like he did where he doesn't shoot the ball great.
06:10But the Celtics, I think, are still the best team in the East.
06:14I love what the Magic are doing against the Pistons.
06:18I think tonight all the home teams will win.
06:21I think the Lakers will close out Houston.
06:22I think the Pistons will win at home.
06:26I think the Knicks will win at home.
06:28What do you think is the most surprising series, Orlando-Detroit or Houston-Lakers?
06:33Oh, no.
06:34I think Orlando because I think the Lakers are better than Houston when Kevin Durant is hurt.
06:40He's got that ankle injury.
06:42He's not 100% even when he played.
06:45And I definitely think the Lakers will move on.
06:47And I expect them to move on tonight to win and close out the Houston Rockets.
06:54But Orlando, on the other hand, is in a great position because the Pistons, they are not used to being
07:01in this position.
07:02They got a young team.
07:03I think they'll win tonight, but they got to go back to Orlando for game six.
07:09And that's when you're going to find out if the Pistons are for real.
07:13All right.
07:13Let's do.
07:14I just want to ask him about the Celtic, where you're a three-point shooting team.
07:19If you're into the second quarter, coach, and you're one for 14 from behind the line,
07:26can a three-point shooting team at this point in the season, kind of like what Solano was saying,
07:31can you say, hey, stop shooting threes?
07:33Let's get to the paint because that's what got you where you are.
07:37Okay.
07:37Here's my theory.
07:39And it's only a theory.
07:40Everybody can say, I tell my grandsons, look it, you're terrific three-point shooters.
07:48But if you miss three or four, your next shot should not be a three.
07:52It should be a driving layup.
07:54Get fouled.
07:55Get to the foul line where you know so you can see the ball go in.
07:59Because mentally, you need to see the ball go in so you can start making your threes comfortably.
08:05If you just keep jacking threes and missing, it does something to your psyche.
08:11So I understand the Celtics are a three-point shooting team.
08:15They shouldn't stop shooting them.
08:16They actually shot fewer than the 76ers did.
08:21The 76ers took 42.
08:23The Celtics took 39.
08:25The difference is 76ers were making more.
08:28They made 15.
08:29So you want to keep shooting when you're shooting well.
08:31I want to get the headlines, but I do want to ask you about the Denver series.
08:35Has that series surprised you at all?
08:37Yes.
08:38I'm a Denver fan.
08:41It breaks my heart.
08:43Bruce Brown, my former player, I love him.
08:45And Denver is in trouble right now because the Joker has to be the Joker.
08:54And Gobert guards him better than everybody else.
08:58Do you think Minnesota should be talked about as an elite team the way we do OKC, maybe even San
09:06Antonio, Denver?
09:08No.
09:09No.
09:10Not yet.
09:10I don't think so.
09:12I think they lack some scoring.
09:15You know, they have to rely on Ant-Man to produce big for them and for Julius Randle to have
09:26some terrific scoring games.
09:29But I think they're just too inconsistent offensively.
09:32I think you might be forgetting one of my former Chicago Bulls on that team, no?
09:37Who's that?
09:39Isn't Ayo Desumu on that team?
09:41Oh, he was great the other night.
09:44Can I tell you, you understand what I was watching now at the beginning of the Bulls season with Ayo
09:51and Kobe White and Vooch and Matas Buzelis?
09:56Yeah.
09:57Did I go on, coach?
09:58I can't believe they're not in first place in the East and crushing in the playoffs.
10:03They got shadowbanned.
10:04They got shadowbanned by Billy Donovan.
10:08Billy's not there anymore.
10:09You can't blame him anymore.
10:11Now he's shadowbanned.
10:12Where's he going to be?
10:13Where's he going to be next season?
10:17Arkansas?
10:18I thought Orlando when they got bounced in the first round by Detroit, but it doesn't look like that's happening.
10:24Yeah.
10:25Well, here's the thing about the playoffs, too.
10:29You never know.
10:30The Pistons, they win tonight, and then they go back to Orlando.
10:35And if they should pull off what I would consider an upset, winning on the road, they'll come back and
10:42win game seven at home.
10:44Hey, coach, we talked about this.
10:46It's, we said, I, my, my take is that OKC San Antonio, that's the NBA championship.
10:52The finals is what it is.
10:55Do you feel that way?
10:56Well, I think whoever comes out the West guaranteed to win the championship.
11:00Yeah.
11:01I'd say in all likelihood that that's correct.
11:04But if OKC should stumble and Wemby leads the Spurs to the Western Conference championship series, then I'm going to
11:17have to revisit that because if they're playing the Celtics who are NBA champions, they've got championship pedigree.
11:25They've got a lot of players from two years ago when they won it, all of a sudden that experience
11:31can pay off.
11:32I thought you were going to revisit the Wemby's the greatest ever conversation.
11:37I didn't realize you were going to revisit your prediction.
11:41Again, here's what I'd say.
11:44You know, the NBA playoffs are the greatest because, you know, now you're talking about a seven game series.
11:52So normally in a seven game series, the best team is going to win.
11:57You know, there could be an upset or two, but whoever's playing the best, who's ever the healthiest, who's ever
12:05players playing with a tremendous amount of confidence.
12:09I did a speaking engagement last night to the Economic Club of Miami, and we were talking about what it
12:17takes to have a championship caliber team.
12:20And I think there are several NBA teams that have that culture that right now are thinking to themselves, we're
12:31winning the title.
12:32We know OKC is going to be favored, but I think the Spurs, I think the Denver Nuggets are trying
12:37to figure out how the heck do we get past Minnesota.
12:40The Celtics are saying, hey, we didn't win it last year, but we won it the year before the Knicks.
12:46We were right there last last year.
12:48We could have could have gotten a championship.
12:52But hey, they lost to Indiana and.
12:56Too bad.
12:58One more till next year.
13:00One more quick thing before we get to headlines, Solana, because you said the NBA playoffs are great.
13:04It's a seven game series.
13:05And I remember being a kid and it was a three game series and Solana just found out a couple
13:12days ago or maybe it was last week that the bonus used to be three to make two.
13:18And he believes that that immediately discounts Michael Jordan as being better than LeBron James.
13:24That's proof that the NBA was soft if you had three chances to make two.
13:30Derek Jones Jr.
13:32Immediately better than Larry Bird in my eyes, coach.
13:36Three to make two.
13:37Whoever made that rule up.
13:39That's ridiculous.
13:40You know, you know, I've always I've always felt like you should only you get fouled.
13:49You get one free throw.
13:51You get fouled on a two point shot.
13:53You shoot one free throw.
13:54If you make it, it's two points.
13:56It's a 15 footer.
13:58Interesting.
13:59And if you get fouled on a three, shoot a three and it's worth three points.
14:04Why do you have to shoot it from the spot that you got fouled at?
14:08What?
14:08How about you shoot it from the spot you got fouled at?
14:12Yeah, that and how many points do you get?
14:15However many it was.
14:17Yeah, exactly.
14:17I would I would buy into that.
14:19That makes sense.
14:20Coach and I just changed the game.
14:21Solana.
14:22You foul a guy on a dunk.
14:24He gets the dunk.
14:26He gets the dunk again.
14:27Okay.
14:27Okay.
14:28He doesn't get the dunk.
14:30He has to dunk.
14:31And some of these guys who need a running start, do you give them a running start?
14:37No.
14:37Got to be the shot.
14:39You got to be right at the rim.
14:40Yep.
14:41Okay.
14:42I have a problem with that because I couldn't dunk standing still under the basket.
14:46I needed a running start.
14:48My vertical is only good off of one foot.
14:50I hope you don't get fouled while you're dunking.
14:51I don't know if we're figuring this out.
14:53I don't know if we're figuring this out, fellas.
14:55I feel like we've just solved the basket.
14:57Should we go to a four-point shot?
15:00You wouldn't get an argument out of me.
15:02More points, the better.
15:03I like the razzle-dazzle.
15:05From behind half court, Coach?
15:07No.
15:07No.
15:08You guys remember the shot that Jerry West made against the Knicks?
15:12And there was game six in Madison Square Garden and something.
15:16Of course.
15:17Yeah.
15:17How could you bet?
15:18It's a three-quarter court.
15:19I don't even remember.
15:20Shot.
15:21It was only worth two.
15:23It tied the game.
15:24In this day and age, it would have been worth three.
15:27And the Lakers would have won.
15:30And the Knicks would not have won their second championship.
15:33If Adam Silver said to you right now, Coach Jim Laranega makes this decision for the future
15:40of basketball right now.
15:41You can get rid of the three-point shot forevermore, just say the word, would you?
15:47No.
15:48You would not?
15:49No.
15:50No.
15:50I think it's added a dimension to the game.
15:54And it actually has inspired players to develop a skill that is incredible.
16:02Magical.
16:03Would you see what Steph Curry can do and all these great shooters in the game?
16:09The Euro step to a travel.
16:12Well, a correct Euro step is not a travel.
16:16But the NBA players have taken four steps, which is not legal in any basketball, but the
16:24NBA refs let it go.
16:26There's so much traveling in the game today.
16:29The good thing about it is it doesn't cost you anything.
16:33You know, like when you travel on a plane or a train or a car, it costs some money.
16:38These guys can travel all over the court.
16:41It doesn't cost them anything.
16:42It's not even a turnover.
16:43Every time someone travels in the NBA, someone just blurts out Euro step, and then we're
16:48all okay with it.
16:49They call hook and gather step.
16:51Yeah, gather step.
16:51That's right here.
16:52Gather step.
16:53All right.
16:54Let's do headlines here.
16:56We're already behind the clock here.
16:58Headlines with Alejandro Solana brought to you by Doral Kia.
17:01You always pay less with your pricito at Doral Kia.
17:04Visit us at Doral Kia or DoralKia.com.
17:07Solana's head looked like it was going to explode when we were talking about free throws being
17:12taken from the spot that they were fouled at and being worth whatever point it is with
17:16just one shot.
17:17Yeah.
17:18I don't hate the idea of a player in the bonus when it's like a loose ball foul, giving them
17:25one free throw to get the two points.
17:27Like, I don't hate that idea because I don't know, sometimes teams get in the bonus and then
17:34all of a sudden they're shooting free throws for eight quarters.
17:36But I don't know if I like the idea of a three point shooter getting fouled and having
17:40to shoot a three, like it gets what he was trying to do.
17:44He was trying to shoot one shot to get three points.
17:47So now why should he be able to have three shots to get one, two or three points?
17:52Because where do you draw the line?
17:54What if a guy had his foot on the line when he's taking the three now?
17:58Well, that's a two.
18:00It's very simple, Solana.
18:02Right.
18:02But the difference between it being a three and a two was half his foot.
18:06So now that, I mean, that goes, I mean, that happened with the game.
18:09Yeah, that's, that's not any different than the game.
18:12What does he make some sense, Solana?
18:14Come on.
18:15I got to ask you guys, what do you think of the expansion, the NCAA?
18:19That was 76 teams.
18:21I mean, at what point is too much?
18:25And listen, I love postseason anything.
18:28But if the postseason gets watered down, although I probably said this when round one of the NBA
18:34playoffs became seven games, I probably had the same take.
18:37It's probably fine.
18:38I'm okay with it.
18:40In fact, make the football playoffs 76 teams as well.
18:43When games mean more, coach, people love them.
18:46I love games that mean something.
18:48Coach, I watch water polo with his team.
18:51The best team versus the second best team.
18:53I'll watch water polo.
18:55Well, the NCAA tournament to me is the greatest sporting event in the world.
19:00It's, it's those three weeks.
19:02Tremendous.
19:02The only, the only question I had, and I was so for expansion, but we only added eight teams.
19:09I think probably the pressure because the sweet 16, these last two years, no mid-majors are around.
19:16So I think they're going to try and the attempt, I'm not sure how serious it is, is add a
19:24few more teams.
19:26Okay.
19:27Now we have 76 teams in the NCAA tournament.
19:30I don't want, no, why, why, why didn't they just go to a whole nother round?
19:35Why, why didn't they go to 96 and play a full round?
19:39The 32 conference champions versus the 32 at-large teams, and then 32 teams get a bye.
19:47The best teams in the country based on the rankings and all the computer rankings.
19:53If you do that, I think those first round games, you know, 32 games, and you can fit it in.
20:00You got a week, you know, so you can, you can play a whole series of games on Tuesday, Wednesday,
20:06Thursday.
20:06I mean, it works, uh, you gotta, you gotta be very concerned about the masters.
20:12So it can't go over that for that first Monday in April, uh, and it can't start any sooner,
20:19but, uh, yeah, but they do, like you said, they have time during the week.
20:23Cause sometimes they'll just do Monday and Thursday and whatever you can play games every night.
20:26Yeah.
20:27And they should, and you can play them everywhere.
20:29You know, you can, again, you can have an Eastern region right now.
20:33They play them in Dayton.
20:35All right.
20:35Those, those, uh, first four games are in Dayton.
20:39And, but coach to the, to, to this point about the NCAA tournament, when they had the college football playoffs,
20:46the argument was that now you have the kids that were playing 13 games.
20:50Now they're playing 18 games.
20:51Gotta interrupt you.
20:53Sandy Alcantara just struck out Shohei Ohtani, made him look silly.
20:58I mean, that's a great opening.
21:01Sandy Dillon.
21:02At bat for Sandy.
21:05I like it.
21:06The talk is not talking to us.
21:07He's watching the baseball.
21:08I've got money on this game.
21:09I've got money on this game.
21:10Oh, surprise, surprise.
21:14But coach, when I played, I left, I got drafted 05.
21:17So my last year was 04.
21:19There was no chance of us playing any, if we won a national championship coach, we were playing 12, 13
21:25games.
21:26Now these kids have to play 17, 18 games.
21:28And a lot of the argument would be with the NCAA tournament, you're adding so many games on to these
21:34kids' schedule.
21:35Is there any concern from that?
21:38No, you're not.
21:40What?
21:40They're going to have to play another round, two rounds?
21:42If you're in the tournament, you're playing one more game.
21:46If you're in the tournament, you're playing one more game.
21:49Yeah, it's literally one more game because you're adding one round.
21:52If you lose, you're done.
21:54But if you win, the teams that get a bye, unless you're one of the teams that have to play
22:01on the first night, you play one more game.
22:05Do you know how many games?
22:07The regular season is 31 games right now.
22:10Yes, sir.
22:11You get into your tournament, like ACC tournament, most teams, even if you're playing well, you play three more to
22:19get to the championship.
22:21All right?
22:21So that's 34.
22:23Now you get into the NCAA tournament.
22:26If you're lucky, you're going to play six more games and play the 40th game in the national championship.
22:33That's half of what the NBA plays in the regular season.
22:38And it's only 40 games out of 100 that the true NBA playoff teams play.
22:44So I don't think it's that big a deal.
22:48What is a bigger deal to me was the expansion of these leagues where the Atlantic Coast Conference now has
22:55teams on the West Coast.
22:57The ACC has Stanford and Cal where it's the travel that exhausts you.
23:04Where you've got a five-hour flight out there, a five-hour flight back.
23:09More than that, six, seven hours.
23:12And some teams that are flying commercial, you know, the non-revenue sports, they're flying commercial.
23:19They're changing planes because there's no direct flights.
23:24That's my main concern about traveling.
23:26And the conference is literally called the Atlantic Coast.
23:29What are we doing here?
23:31They're on the Pacific Coast.
23:32I mean, it just doesn't add up.
23:34Well, we've got to change the name to the All-Coast Conference.
23:37Ah, you see, we have solved a lot of issues here.
23:40Jimmy, can you write an essay on everything we covered from NBA changes to tournament changes to now conference name
23:50changes?
23:51Can you do that, Jimmy?
23:52Would it be graded?
23:54It will be graded, and I'd like it by 345.
23:59After the commercial break.
24:01Solana, real quick headlines.
24:02I'm a big commercial flight guy, Coach.
24:06Coach, hate to pick apart another one of your alleged improvements, but you're devaluing the one seed in the NCAA
24:16tournament.
24:17And, you know, I guess because you never got the one seed as a coach, you just don't care about
24:21it that much.
24:24But how are you devaluing it?
24:26Are you getting back at me for the forehead comment?
24:28That was weeks ago, man.
24:30He's on the attack.
24:31The best defense is a good offense.
24:33His forehead's still big.
24:36He hadn't fixed it.
24:38But how do you devalue the one seeds?
24:41Because you're making 32 teams a one seed.
24:44I mean, then what's the point of even being, of trying to be a top four seed?
24:49You're making 32 teams a one seed?
24:52Wait a minute.
24:53Do you understand what he's saying?
24:5516 teams a one seed, whatever it is.
24:57However many one seeds, you're totally devaluing it.
25:00Totally.
25:01No, you're not.
25:02Because the number one seeds are still going to play the bottom teams.
25:09Whoever wins in the first round, those teams are going to be ranked.
25:15I understand that they get a bye, but there's something special about four teams being named the one seeds in
25:22the NCAA tournament.
25:24Now you're adding, I don't know, I couldn't do the math, but you're adding 90, 14.
25:28You said 32 of them.
25:29You're adding how many more ones?
25:32Am I off?
25:33You're totally devaluing it.
25:36If you're off, Solana's messing with your feed because I see you just fine.
25:41I think Solana's.
25:42And don't listen to him, coach.
25:43We understand what you're saying.
25:45He wore a football hammer in class.
25:51I just used that as a launching pad to take a shot at Coach L.
25:55I don't know why you guys are getting all defensive.
25:58Because everybody understands me.
26:00I thought you were my buddy, too, Solana.
26:03Well, I couldn't pass your argument about if the one foot is on the three-point line, you have two
26:09or three shots.
26:10Because that's been litigated a million times over in the NBA.
26:14Because you guys are acting like, oh, you get fouled taking a three-pointer, shoot a three-pointer for three
26:19shots is a good idea.
26:20And it's just not.
26:21It's a terrible idea.
26:22If I get shot taking an elbow jumper, instead of going to the free-throw line, then make me take
26:27the elbow jumper for two points.
26:29Like, where do you draw the line?
26:30Why not change the entire free-throw system?
26:33That's what we talked about.
26:33Where you take the free-throw from wherever you got fouled.
26:37And if your foot was on the line, it's a two.
26:39If you're behind the line, it's a three.
26:41That's an easy concept.
26:42No, I got it.
26:43But I just don't understand.
26:44I don't think I did.
26:45So, do you like the idea that the game slows down and we have to wait for them to, first
26:53of all, decide if it's a two or a three so they go to the video?
26:56Yeah, I do.
26:57Wait a minute.
26:58Wait a minute.
27:00Then the guy gets to shoot one free-throw.
27:03He gets to shoot one free-throw.
27:05We got to wait around until they rebound the ball, get the lineup set, and then he gets a second
27:09free-throw.
27:11Yeah.
27:12And then that misses.
27:12It clanks and it goes away and they got to go rebound it and bring him out.
27:16It takes ten minutes to shoot three free-throws.
27:19Instead of just go to the three-point line, shoot the three, and play from there.
27:23Liam Hicks, home run, top of the second for the Marlins.
27:27Marlins up one-nothing.
27:28Let's go.
27:30I think the game is fine the way it's being played.
27:33And you and Adam Silver are trying to ruin the game that I love with this stupid 3-2-1
27:39lottery system that is just the dumbest idea I've ever heard of.
27:43And now you guys are trying to take away free-throws.
27:45Dwayne Wade wouldn't have one of his rings if it wasn't for free-throws.
27:49So, yeah, I'm cool with how the game is played.
27:51You're a big fan of free-throws.
27:54You love free-throws.
27:56That's like you're drawing your line in the sand.
27:58You can't see less free-throws?
28:01No.
28:02Give me more free-throws.
28:03I want more free-throws.
28:12Do you like the action that goes up and down and the game is fast-paced?
28:16Or do you like when everybody's standing still, 10 guys standing around, trash-talking, while one guy shoots a free
28:26-throw?
28:26And then everybody high-fives him when he misses.
28:29And you have to huddle.
28:31Everybody huddles at the free-throw line.
28:34It's like volleyball.
28:35You ever notice in volleyball, after every point, the team's huddle.
28:42Solana's caping up for literally the worst part of the game.
28:45Hey, Solana, that's weird.
28:48What else would you like to get rid of, Solana, the 24-second clock?
28:52Let's just let them dribble all day.
28:55If they could only bring back four corners.
29:01Hey, I was a part that brought in the shot clock, by the way.
29:05Were you?
29:06Yeah.
29:06I was an assistant coach at the University of Virginia.
29:09We had Ralph Sampson, the three-time national player of the year.
29:14Carolina had James Worthy and Michael Jordan and Sam Perkins.
29:19And in the ACC tournament championship with Dick Enberg and Billy Packer and Al McGuire doing the game,
29:28Dean Smith had Carolina.
29:30They had a, I think, a two-point lead or a three-point lead in the second half with, like,
29:3716 minutes to go.
29:38And he went to the four corners and he held it.
29:42And Terry Holland, the head coach of Virginia, and Craig Littlepage, the other assistant with I.
29:48You know those names, Craig Littlepage?
29:51He replaced Terry Holland as the AD.
29:54Anyway, we're sitting there and Terry's saying, hey, do you think we should send one of our players down to
30:00the offensive end so it's only five on four?
30:03Do you think Dean would let Jordan and Perkins and Worthy attack then?
30:09Because he must be afraid they're just not good enough to score on us.
30:16Maybe we should just go four.
30:18And if he still goes four corners, maybe we'll just send another guy down and it can be five on
30:23three.
30:24And we're having this conversation.
30:26And Dick Enberg is asking Al McGuire and Dick Packer, I mean, Billy Packer and Al McGuire,
30:34what do you think of this four-corner strategy?
30:36And Al McGuire says, we need a shot clock.
30:39I don't understand why we don't have a shot clock.
30:43Yeah, college basketball didn't have a shot clock.
30:45NBA did.
30:46You're too young, Solana.
30:47But they literally could just run a four corners all game long.
30:54But isn't that why the five-second rule exists, coach?
31:00Yes, but no one called five seconds.
31:03The referees, you guys can see me, the audience, they just moved their hand and then the guy would pay
31:09another one.
31:09And then they finally got rid of that and reduced the shot clock to 30 seconds.
31:15But the point is, you know, the game has evolved over the years.
31:20I think the three-point shot in 1986, that was added.
31:25That was a tremendous addition.
31:27I really do think we shoot too many free throws.
31:32And because of that, there's too much standing around, standing still,
31:35and too much going to the video to see if it's a two or a three.
