Two odd, badly misspelled, and almost impossible to read notes were found in the cellar where Mary Phagan’s body was discovered. Did they come from the girl herself, written in a daze as she slipped toward death, or from her killer, using broken words to mislead the police and cast suspicion on a Black man? The notes read:
“He said he would love me, laid down like the night witch did it, but that long, tall, Black man did by his sleb.”
“Mama, that Black man hired down here did this. I went to get water, and he pushed me down this hole, a long, tall, Black man that has it woke, long, lean, tall. I write while he plays with me.”
