ENDANGERED AFRICAN PENGUIN RESCUED AFTER BEACH STRANDING
WITH VID
BY JAIANSH SHARMA
Check out the dramatic rescue of a critically endangered African penguin found stranded and exhausted on a South African beach.
Dr Catherine Hauw, wildlife veterinarian from Brenton-on-Sea, South Africa, captured the urgent moment after the vulnerable bird was discovered along the shoreline.
The footage shows the young penguin appearing weak and lethargic, prompting immediate action after a member of the public raised the alarm.
With fewer than 10,000 breeding pairs remaining in the wild, African penguins are under severe threat from disease, pollution, and predation.
The bird was carefully wrapped and transported to a specialist veterinary clinic for urgent care and stabilization.
Upon examination, vets discovered a fishing hook lodged deep inside the penguin’s stomach a life-threatening injury likely caused by ingesting contaminated prey.
After a delicate procedure to remove the hook and provide fluids, the penguin began showing promising signs of recovery.
The rescue highlights both the dangers marine pollution poses to wildlife and the vital role of quick intervention in saving endangered species.
Catherine said: “Thanks to a member of the public who alerted us, we were able to intervene and rush the penguin for treatment.”
Viewers praised the rescue efforts in the comments.
One wrote: “Anyone who rescues and/or saves penguins deserves a medal.”
Another added: “Baby you are the best you saved a precious life.”

00:24He is not going well at the moment, probably will try to bite, we will try to get him in
00:37the towel.
00:56He doesn't look like he has charges on the nose or on the eyes at the moment, he doesn't look
01:03like he has injuries anywhere, can't see any blood either.
01:10He seems to be able to walk but he is very very tired, let me see on this other side.
01:21So yes, there is no discharge for beak or ice, so maybe he is going to be quiet, so we
01:30will bring him at the medicating today.
01:54Great, it's got a big one, it looks like a seal or something.
02:00That is exactly the problem.
02:03It looks like seal.
02:06We've got some wounds on the wing here as well.
02:09I think a seal or something tries to get her.
02:15Should we shave in sea or are you not into...
02:18I'm also...
02:20Can we just see how deep it is here?
02:25It's all the way in...
02:31Possibly into the abdominal cavity.
02:34Oh no, baby, I understand why you were so tired.
02:39He's still going, right?
02:41I don't want to feel this way.
02:43I think if...
02:44Who knows, maybe we can work something out.
02:50This wing is actually...
02:51It feels a bit strange, but I don't think it's broken.
02:56It's very thin or...
02:58Not too bad.
02:59Yeah, because he's...
03:02It's actually quite fine if he's got something back.
03:05Or a wild bird, but it's not bad.
03:08I think...
03:09It can do something.
03:11It's also standing up straight.
03:13And he doesn't have much...
03:14No.
03:15I don't think it's fine.
03:15No.
03:16I don't think it's fine.
03:17I don't think it's fine.
03:18I have faith in his fingers.
03:20I also do.
03:21He's strong or something.
03:23He's really...
03:24He's turning up, honey.
03:25I don't see anything there.
03:27I think we should have faith in you.
03:29I look at you.
03:31Yes, we do.
03:31I think it's a fair enough.
03:33It's a fair enough chance.
03:34Yes, we give him a chance.
03:35Yeah.
03:35Do we...
03:37Stabilize him anyway?
03:38Yes, so it's a fair enough.
03:40And then...
03:41We usually get them through to...
03:42Robburg.
03:43Robburg also.
03:44And then do you...
03:45For real?
03:46Then they have a faith.
03:47Keeping it for a while.
03:49Depending on which...
03:51Because this little guy is probably going to need
03:54some...
03:56Antisphetic...
03:57Antisphetic...
03:58Antisphetic...
03:58But that you need to hear.
04:00Uh...
04:02Antisphetic...
04:02You will give it...
04:03Yeah, we'll prefer to rather send them to...
04:06To the experts.
04:07Oh, okay, okay, okay.
04:08And I was saying,
04:09I'm going up to...
04:09There's Brendan, Kingdell, and...
04:12How many?
04:12Yeah.
04:13Yeah.
04:13Yeah.
04:13Faith just had a lot more.
04:20It's okay.
04:22It's okay.
04:23It's okay.
04:23We're all here.
04:24Yeah.
04:26Yeah.
04:28That's a bad thing.
04:30And then you get to...
04:30All of the other stuff.
04:35I'm going to...
04:35I'm going to put 13 this one.
04:37And then we're going to try the other leg again.
04:40I can swing around if you want.
04:41Yeah, it's all good.
04:43Do you want...
04:44Come on that side.
04:50You've got a way to pull up.
04:52I hope that would be enough to pull up, but it's like a German is now.
04:56It feels weird. It feels weird.
05:08But you're finished doing it. Oh, so hydrated.
05:11It's been such a hydrating thing.
05:13And then that's vitamins or?
05:15That's going to be oral.
05:16Okay.
