In a peaceful neighbourhood on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, interior architect Laura Libenson has reimagined a compact 56sqm/603sqft traditional casa chorizo into a light-filled home for her and her family, centred around a leafy courtyard. Once closed in and compartmentalised, the home was opened up—reinstating the central patio, removing internal walls, and adding an internal staircase with hidden storage and a generous bookshelf. Upstairs, a former storeroom is now a serene main bedroom with original timber floors and a large window, while part of the rooftop terrace became a playful and space efficient bedroom for her young son Pedro. Custom cabinetry wraps from the entryway through to the kitchen, providing seamless storage and flow. A warm palette drawn from the garden ties it all together in a home designed to evolve with its family.

00:03The original house dates back to the early 20th century and has always served as a residence.
00:11Today the house works really well for me and my family.
00:15Even though it's not huge, the spaces themselves are open and filled with natural light.
00:24I was inspired by other casas chorizo in the area.
00:28I like seeing the renovations and how they highlighted its original features and preserved as much of them as they
00:36could.
00:37So during our renovations we wanted all the new materials to be locally sourced with natural colours that work with
00:45the original features of the house.
00:48My name is Laura, I'm an interior architect and this is my home.
00:52I live here with my husband Juan and our four-year-old son Pedro.
01:06The house is in Temperley in the outskirts of Buenos Aires.
01:11It's a peaceful English-style neighbourhood from the late 19th century with mostly low-rise houses.
01:19It's also really convenient with lots of little shops run by their owners where we do most of our shopping.
01:28The previous owners had covered up the patio and our main priority was to bring the patio back to life.
01:35We also wanted to be able to access all rooms in the house without going through the outdoor space.
01:43Our priority was to create one big, comfortable and bright living space where the three of us could spend most
01:51of our time together.
01:55The house was set up like a typical casa chorizo with rooms all around a central patio.
02:01Upstairs there was a tiny storage room that you could only get to through an exterior staircase.
02:07The first thing we did was to tear down the walls that connected the two bedrooms in order to create
02:14a large living area.
02:15We also removed the wall dividing the kitchen and the bathroom to create a larger kitchen.
02:22A staircase was added inside the house and we moved the bathroom to the space below.
02:28The sleeping areas were moved upstairs where we turned what used to be the storage space into our main room
02:36and built an additional room for Pedro using some of the space from the roof terrace.
02:45The patio is my favorite part of the house.
02:49I love that it's the first thing you see when you enter.
02:54The walls, the stairs, the doors and the gate are all original.
03:00We did change the floors to these beautiful limestone tiles which are typical of traditional homes.
03:09Since we use the patio a lot for meals, we set up a ledge that works as a pass-through
03:15and for extra support.
03:18We also closed off the space under the stairs so we can hide all of our cleaning supplies.
03:28From the patio the living area can be accessed through two sets of doors.
03:34In the entryway we designed a piece of furniture for shoes, coats and backpacks.
03:40Since these things tend to get messy I decided to hide them behind doors.
03:47The living and dining space is a large open room with high ceilings.
03:53We removed the drop ceilings that were originally covering the vaulted brick which made the room feel much larger.
04:01We kept the pine floors and the cedar doors but we did a lot of work to remove the plaster
04:07from the walls.
04:10Against the window we placed a really big modular sofa that we had custom made.
04:15The best part is that we can rearrange it when needed.
04:20The coffee table is something that I built myself in a woodworking class and the rocking chair used to belong
04:28to my mother-in-law.
04:29It's everyone's favorite seats.
04:32We installed the TV on a swivel mount so we can watch from the sofa and from the dining table.
04:40The dining table was something I made with repurposed materials from an exhibition a few years ago.
04:46We eat, work and enjoy our hobbies on this table.
04:51I thought about setting up a dedicated desk but I loved being able to look out into the living room
04:58while I work.
05:00Along the wall we added a sideboard where we store work-related items, our computers and toys for Pedro.
05:07On top of it I have my grandmother's old sewing machine that I still use to this day.
05:16We designed the entryway cabinet to wrap around the corner and into the kitchen.
05:21This helps transition between the two spaces and creates some extra storage.
05:28We really enjoy cooking so we made sure to have a large countertop where we can do it.
05:35To make this work we found a place for everything that usually ends up on the counter and created lots
05:41of storage space.
05:43We also wanted the design of the kitchen to follow the green palette and natural materials of the patio.
05:50We placed all the appliances along the pantry wall and added a large window.
05:55It has completely changed this space bringing in a lot of light.
06:00In front of the window we added a little bar that looks out at the patio.
06:05This is where we usually have breakfast and it is such a treat because of the soft light in the
06:11morning.
06:13The bathroom is hidden behind a door under the stairs.
06:18We used a combination of black salmon tiles and granite mosaics with pink speckles.
06:23I liked the idea of changing the colour in the space and making it a bit more fun.
06:32For me the staircase is definitely the star of the renovation.
06:37We added hidden storage space in every nook and cranny as well as a huge open bookshelf.
06:45It's not your typical use of a staircase but it solved a lot of our storage issues and really gives
06:51the space its identity.
06:54We chose wood due to its warmth and for the upper section we used metal to let in a bit
07:01of light from the terrace.
07:04The bedrooms are small but at the moment it is all we need.
07:09We designed them as small cozy caves to contrast with the open living spaces.
07:15We think the transition helps shift our energy before bedtime.
07:20In our bedroom there is a wall to wall closet for our clothes and we added some hidden storage behind
07:26the bed for out of season stuff.
07:32Where the old door used to be we created a large window that gives us lovely light throughout the day.
07:42Pedro's room is the smallest in the house.
07:45The space was so incredibly small that we decided to add a short door to give it some privacy without
07:52making it feel crowded.
07:54We gave it just enough space for his bed and storage for his clothes.
07:59We wanted Pedro's room to feel special so we printed this custom animal themed wall vinyl.
08:06It was a way of making the space more playful.
08:10For the floor we used leftover tiles from the kitchen.
08:14He loves his room, especially his Lego shelf and his little bookshelf.
08:21We wanted his room to have access to a roof terrace so we decided to add a second door which
08:27we repurposed from the old storage room.
08:29In a few years we planned to build him a new bedroom where the roof terrace is now and turn
08:35his room into a study.
08:40When we decided to add the new indoor staircase we chose to keep the outdoor one as well.
08:45We find it beautiful and visually striking.
08:48It allows us to have two points of access to a rooftop.
08:56If I had to define my philosophy it's simple.
09:00The only rule is that there are no rules.
09:04If we can't let go of some preconceived ideas about how a kitchen, bedroom, bathroom or living room should look.
09:12Any space can be transformed into a functional, cozy place full of personalities.
09:18If there needs to be a kitchen!
09:20And both 보여 ghosts can happen in a beautiful house.
09:21Everyone does not have to pay.
09:23What's good, they have to finish?
