Property Brothers Under Pressu Episode 3 Engsub

00:06I always love clients bringing us a new challenge.
00:08Always, do you?
00:09Well, you know, it depends what the challenge is.
00:12Garrett and Malia, two boys, sounds like a fun family.
00:15Well, they want four bedrooms.
00:16Yeah.
00:16And that's pretty much all we know.
00:18No, location, location, location.
00:21All that matters.
00:22It's always location, location, location.
00:30,
00:33.
01:17We're in Redondo Beach in the South Bay of Los Angeles.
01:21I grew up in Hawaii and being near the beach and the ocean, so important to me.
01:26I grew up in Colorado, which is a completely different environment.
01:29Came out here for school and met Malia, and we've been in the South Bay ever since.
01:33All right, and we just saw your son take a big face plunge.
01:37We're off to a great start.
01:39That's normal.
01:41So our first home we purchased in Lawndale, which is still part of the South Bay, but a little bit
01:46further inland.
01:47Plenty of space for us and one child, but we're looking for some more space.
01:53Selling it, we had, I think, what, 14, 15 offers?
01:58Well above asking.
01:59100 over asking price.
02:01But then we soon realized that we had to now be in the other position and now be a buyer
02:06in such a crazy market.
02:09Yeah, so we've been renting for months now.
02:11It is tough just knowing that we're paying rent when we could be investing it into a home.
02:17It's been month after month and weekend after weekend just searching and searching, and here we are.
02:24We need help.
02:32We're definitely at our wit's end just kind of managing the process.
02:36And so I think the brothers who can kind of help us see the things that maybe we can't see
02:41to kind of get us across the finish line would be huge.
02:44We're not interrupting a romantic picnic in the park, are we?
02:47Hey, what's up?
02:49Hello.
02:49How you doing?
02:49How's it going?
02:50Good to see you.
02:51Good to see you.
02:51Hey.
02:52We needed some help and you guys popped up.
02:54You know, we just came to play Tic-Tac-Toe.
02:57I'm good at everything, yes.
02:59And very competitive.
03:00Actually, the one thing he's not good at, family feud, we discovered.
03:03Oh.
03:04Excuse me.
03:05It was me, actually.
03:08Well, give me a little lowdown.
03:09What is it you're looking for?
03:10What kind of a house?
03:11What are your needs before we talk about the wish list of niceties?
03:15Sure.
03:16So we have two boys, six and three, so we're looking for enough space to fit us all.
03:21We both work from home, so I would say four-bedroom backyard is big for me, and we're like this
03:27area.
03:27We have a lot of friends who live close by as well with similar age groups.
03:31And all the schools in Redondo Beach are great.
03:34A lot of people come to Redondo Beach because of the school system.
03:38Absolutely.
03:38It's a big reason of why we're looking as thick in the South Bay.
03:42The beach doesn't hurt as well.
03:43I mean, that's a nice bonus on top, the cherry on top.
03:46You really want to be in this area.
03:47I love the beach.
03:48I love the beach life.
03:49I need the salts.
03:51But it all depends on budget, right, and what you're looking for.
03:53And if you've got to stretch the budget a little bit, you might have to go a little further outside
03:57of exactly where you want for schools.
03:58Right.
03:59Because you're paying so much for the area, not just for the house and the lot itself.
04:02It doesn't need to be move-in ready.
04:04I think we're willing to put in the work.
04:05We thought we'd have a home by now much, much sooner.
04:09But again, like getting out bid, there's so many families looking, and we're just, people are willing to go well
04:15over asking price.
04:16You guys are already aware of how challenging the search is going to be.
04:21Yeah.
04:22Yeah.
04:22Yeah.
04:23And if we show you a house that's not exactly what we want, no beaching and complaining about it.
04:27We have one lined up today.
04:28It's just a few minutes from here if you want to hop in with us.
04:30Awesome.
04:31Let's do it.
04:34For home budget, I would say with the sale of our last home, we've been looking around 1.5.
04:40I would say we're comfortable going up to about 1.75 for the right house.
04:46Sorry, I don't think, wait, 1.75?
04:49You think?
04:50For the right community?
04:53It would put a stretch on us, and it would, maybe like 1.7.
05:05It's just a crazy market.
05:07It's so competitive in the South Bay area because there's nothing out there.
05:11Yeah.
05:11This house, it's not South Bay, but it's 15 minutes to the beach.
05:14That's not bad.
05:15It's a very cute neighborhood.
05:16So if you're looking for a good family neighborhood, tons of kids, amazing access to schools.
05:24It's right there.
05:24That would be convenient.
05:25Perfect.
05:26Yeah.
05:26But what I do like, so you've got a nice big-sized lot.
05:29It's a corner lot.
05:30I like the corner lot.
05:31Yeah.
05:31One less noisy neighbor.
05:32This is listed for $159, so it's really a good price.
05:37I think you could get it down from that as well, put in some money into it, and just make
05:40it exactly what you want.
05:41So I assume the competition's a little less compared to some of the areas we've been looking at.
05:46Yeah, exactly.
05:46We can get the price down a little bit on this.
05:48It's been on the market a little bit.
05:49Mm-hmm.
05:51I don't know.
05:51I'm trying to read.
05:52So right now, I'm thinking you're not sold on this house.
05:55There's no beach.
05:56I just don't know this area very well, to be quite honest.
05:59It's just, yeah, different from what we've looked at so far, but hey, I'm open to anything at this point.
06:04Yes, this is further from the beach, but in reality, this is showing you how much more your dollar can
06:08stretch.
06:08That's fair.
06:09Think of how easy your mornings would be.
06:11It would be quite easy.
06:12A cup of coffee and go across the street.
06:13Walk yourself to school, kids.
06:15Just look both ways.
06:16Yeah.
06:18Go in, take a look around.
06:20Mom.
06:21All right.
06:21You walk straight into a closet.
06:23Yeah, watch the walls.
06:24They'll hit you in the face.
06:25I like a grand entrance, and that's...
06:28Do me a favor.
06:28Can you have some grand vision?
06:30Yes, I will try.
06:31This has all of your square footage on one level.
06:34Is this a four-bedroom?
06:35Four-bed, two-bath, 2,050 square feet.
06:38In fact, with the price that you'd be able to get this house, you could even raise the ceiling heights
06:42and take the full height of the attic space.
06:45Hey, you know what that would do?
06:46That would give a grand entrance.
06:48It would be a grand entrance.
06:51Look how far back this goes.
06:53It's big.
06:54Oh, okay.
06:55This is one of the bedrooms.
06:56This is kind of weird.
06:57Yeah.
06:57Between your living room and kitchen, you have a bedroom where it's disconnected.
07:00Yeah, that keeps going.
07:01Is this a bonus office here?
07:02Yes.
07:03Okay.
07:04I mean, that's obviously something that we definitely need.
07:07Office is great.
07:09Come on to the kitchen when you get a second.
07:11First thoughts on this kitchen.
07:13I mean, it's all very plain.
07:15It's a little small, but at least it kind of is a bit more open.
07:20Yeah.
07:20I mean, this is the family room over here.
07:22Yeah.
07:22Because you have a second living space, you could have that as your formal living room or whatever you want.
07:27The idea of expanding the kitchen over here could be a great thing, but in reality, it's nice, especially when
07:31you have two little kids, to have two separate living areas.
07:33I mean, it's a little hospital-y, but yes, I think it has something to work with.
07:38That's because it's white on white on white right now.
07:41There are so many houses that are renovated, but you're paying a fortune, but it's not the way you would
07:45have renovated it.
07:46Right.
07:46They've literally just done a really quick fix to paint cabinets white and painted the original tile countertops and sink.
07:52I want you to see past the current stage and see what's potential.
07:57Renovated, these are a gold mine.
08:00You do realize this house, exactly as it is in your perfect ideal neighborhood, that area you want to be,
08:06is probably $300,000 more.
08:08I know.
08:08As is, right?
08:09Sure.
08:09If this were in the South Bay, I would be like, yes, let's do it.
08:14Let's go.
08:14I think that's where I'm hesitant.
08:16We trust you fully, Jonathan, but I'm trying to picture it.
08:19I'm not quite sure, and so it's, you know, how many concessions do we want to kind of make in
08:24the process?
08:25Let's look at the rest of the house.
08:26I mean, let's look outside and see the garage.
08:28Definitely curious.
08:28I think inside it is a blank canvas.
08:30We could make this anything.
08:31Okay.
08:33This is the enclosed porch.
08:34It doesn't look great from the outside, but it is actually pretty big.
08:38You've got a nice yard space back here.
08:40You've got a great area here for a patio.
08:42And then the garage does have access from the alley.
08:45No, I appreciate you guys bringing us out here and trying to kind of expand the areas in that we're
08:50looking,
08:50because we've been looking for about a year now, and we've struck out in Palos Verdes and Torrance and some
08:55of the other South Bay areas.
08:56So I can definitely see what you see in the home and kind of the canvas that it is.
09:02If this were in the South Bay, I would say, yes, let's go for it right now.
09:08It's a little out of my, out of our bubble.
09:10Put it back to this.
09:11So it's not an option.
09:13Yeah.
09:14Jonathan and I are going to try to find some places, but we have been looking, and it's really hard.
09:18We're looking for the diamond in the rough, something that can at least take a little bit of renovation and
09:22make it clean and livable for you,
09:23because within your budget, we just can't find a lot.
09:26This is tough.
09:27I really have to hone in and try and figure out where we can find them houses to look at
09:31in the South Bay area.
09:32You know, it's just, you know, with prime location, you're putting more money in.
09:37And when that one property pops up, we've got to be ready to pounce on it.
09:40Otherwise, they're going to be in the exact same boat they've been over the last year.
09:43Keep missing out, right?
09:55Thanks for being patient, you guys.
09:57Like we said, houses don't come in the market very often in this area.
10:00Yeah.
10:00But I think we found a contender.
10:02The fact that you found a place in Redondo Beach, honestly.
10:05I love it.
10:06Isn't it over here?
10:07Wow.
10:08It's beautiful.
10:09Yeah.
10:09Ta-da.
10:10Wow.
10:12Pretty cute.
10:13Oh my gosh.
10:13Pretty great.
10:14Great curb appeal.
10:15It looks awesome.
10:16I mean, it looks big.
10:17We didn't know this street existed.
10:19What's your first impression?
10:21Honestly, yeah.
10:22There's trees.
10:22This is awesome.
10:22It's quiet.
10:23It's almost like it's made up.
10:25They're walking their cute little golden retriever.
10:28And it's got beach.
10:29We're in Dreamland.
10:30And it's got beach.
10:31You guys are like beaming ear to ear.
10:34You like this area.
10:35I can tell.
10:36The beach is just a straight shot down.
10:38The kids park that we always go to is walking distance.
10:42Yeah.
10:42It's this crazy little pocket that we never knew of.
10:45This place here, 1965.
10:47It has 2,100 square feet.
10:50Wow.
10:50Four bedrooms, three bathrooms.
10:52Keeps you in the same school district that you want to be in.
10:54Yeah, I don't know how we, if we can afford this.
10:57It's listed at 1.4, so it's under your max budget.
10:59Wow.
10:59However, it has had a lot of work done.
11:01It's not going to sell for 1.4.
11:04Yeah.
11:04Understood.
11:04So it's like dangling this carrot.
11:07They listed intentionally low.
11:09Yeah.
11:09Yeah.
11:09I mean, what would you say it's likely going to go for?
11:12It would probably go a couple hundred thousand above at least.
11:14But if you like it and we want to put an offer in, then we also can just find out
11:17how many offers there are.
11:18And that helps us understand the interest.
11:20Let's get inside.
11:21All right, let's do it.
11:21Yeah, after you.
11:23All right.
11:24Wow.
11:26Wow.
11:27All right.
11:28Office.
11:28We've got the office space in there.
11:30Yeah.
11:30Guest room.
11:31Family room to the left.
11:32Nice family room.
11:33A lot of space.
11:34Our kid room.
11:35Especially having two little kids.
11:36It makes so much sense having a separate space that they can go and yell and scream in.
11:40Yeah, we've got a three-year-old.
11:41Yeah.
11:42And then around this wall, there's living area, dining area.
11:45Wow.
11:45Look at this flow.
11:46Nice.
11:47Another big space.
11:48Yeah, wow.
11:48Kitchen not so big, but would this work for you?
11:51It's a little bit tight.
11:52Probably a little darker than I would.
11:54Dark.
11:54I would do myself.
11:55But it's.
11:56I mean, it seems like it's been recently updated.
11:57I mean, this is doable.
12:00You can easily move in.
12:01This is a giant space.
12:02I mean, they're probably using this as a kid's play area, but all the furniture is over on that side.
12:06Yeah.
12:07This is a great space.
12:07Yeah, it's a lot of space.
12:09You could still have a dining table here.
12:11Yeah.
12:11And then expand into a beautiful big kitchen with an island.
12:14Yeah, I love the ceilings.
12:15Yeah.
12:15Out of the natural.
12:17The natural wood.
12:17The natural wood on top.
12:18What's your gut reaction here?
12:20Is this a house you would say, yes, we could live in this?
12:23100%.
12:23Yeah.
12:24I think there's a couple things that we might change or not have different preferences for,
12:28but it seems like you can move in right away.
12:30The fundamentals of everything we want.
12:32Well, so you don't have much of a yard.
12:33Yeah, so when I was looking at the listing photos, I noticed the yard was a little tight in the
12:38back.
12:39Is that okay for you guys?
12:40Yeah, as long as there's a place for the kids to play, I think the front yard is fine.
12:44It's fenced off.
12:44I'll be right back.
12:45This is the listing agent calling.
12:46Okay.
12:48Even the floor, so these are pre-finished in here.
12:56I'm literally in the house right now.
13:01Yeah.
13:03Listen, it's really unfortunate.
13:05The house just sold.
13:18A little frustrating because we're literally here at the house.
13:22I actually think my clients would put an offer in on this.
13:24I wish I could have given you more time.
13:26What did it sell for?
13:27As soon as I found out.
13:29It went for a 1.615, all caps and a quick close.
13:34A bully offer is basically when somebody comes in with a really strong offer.
13:38It's clean.
13:39You don't have a bunch of conditions.
13:40They'd rather just pay more now to get it, especially in a market like Redondo Beach, which is extremely sought
13:45after.
13:45That's lovely.
13:48Yeah, it's just frustrating because they literally know we're looking at the house.
13:52Why would you not let us at least bring an offer forward?
13:56Hey, guys.
13:57Hey, come on in for a sec.
13:58Yeah.
13:59Really frustrating news, actually.
14:01Just spoke with a listing agent.
14:03Yeah.
14:04They sold the house.
14:05What?
14:06Like, it's gone.
14:07Yeah, it's a firm sale.
14:09That had a bully offer come in.
14:10It was very high.
14:10It sold for over 1.6.
14:12But that still would have been, I mean, I would have said if you guys were going to do an
14:16offer, it would be around 1.6.
14:18Because that's a good price.
14:19Yeah, we could counter that.
14:19But for them to take that without even looking for competing.
14:22It's frustrating, but it's the homeowner's decision to make, right?
14:24Wow.
14:25It's like nothing.
14:26There's nothing we can do.
14:27No, and there's no conditions to fall through, so it's gone.
14:30The house is gone.
14:31There's no point touring the rest of this house, so, okay.
14:34It's ridiculous.
14:35We weren't even given a chance to make a offer.
14:38So, I'm sorry, but it's like we've been giving everything up.
14:42We've been rushing to see these showings, and we didn't even get a chance.
14:47It's frustrating to finally feel like you're making a little bit of progress in the search, only to have it
14:51dangled in front of you and then pulled back.
14:53So, back to square one.
15:07In a market like this, in this area that's so hot, you want to be the person who gets in
15:12and sees the listing before it's even up.
15:14They love this neighborhood, and I was literally just knocking on doors.
15:17I talked to a couple of agents in the area, and I talked to a couple of neighbors that came
15:20out, and they said, well, I think so-and-so's looking to sell.
15:23And that's all it was.
15:34I think it's kind of hilarious that you're looking out the window right here at the house that they really
15:38fell in love with.
15:39These sellers have been here for a while.
15:41They saw the house across the street listed and started thinking about selling themselves.
15:45They just haven't put it up yet, and I hopefully can get this locked down before it actually goes up.
15:50Hello.
15:51Deja vu.
15:51Deja vu.
15:51I know.
15:53This looks familiar.
15:54Right?
15:55I mean, that house is still not available, so just, you know.
15:58Okay.
15:58But this one is.
15:59Wow.
16:00I like the yard.
16:01It's a cute little garden.
16:02It's a nice-sized corner lot.
16:04It has four bedrooms, two bathrooms, just over 2,000 square feet.
16:08Okay.
16:09They're letting us in.
16:10We're going to have a peek.
16:11It's supposed to be listed for 1.325, which is well under market value.
16:15I don't want to waste any time.
16:17It's in this neighborhood, so.
16:18It's in this neighborhood.
16:20Hey, you know what?
16:20If you do like it, let's work that bully thing in our favor because we can just say, here's
16:24our best and final.
16:25What do you think?
16:26All right.
16:27You want to get inside?
16:27Sure.
16:28Come on.
16:28I'm trying not to get my hopes up, but yes.
16:30Have you ever lived in a split level before?
16:32Um, I don't even know what that is.
16:34You'll see them when we walk inside.
16:36It's not just one flat level.
16:38Come on in.
16:38Ah, yes.
16:39Yeah, the stairs split as soon as you come in.
16:41Okay.
16:42So we go down to like a sunken living room area.
16:44Okay.
16:44And then up to the bedrooms and whatnot.
16:46It's an interesting layout.
16:48I wouldn't know what to do with the space.
16:50Don't get scared just because of the stairs.
16:52Overall, this house is pretty great.
16:55Carpets.
16:56Interesting.
16:57That looks like that's been there.
16:58A while.
16:59Yeah, you have a cheap carpet up on the stairs.
17:01Tile at the front.
17:02And then you have this flooring here.
17:03It looks like an engineered hardwood, maybe.
17:05Yeah.
17:06You could swap out all the floors, obviously.
17:08I would get rid of the carpet.
17:09Yeah.
17:09This has the wooden exposed beams that I like.
17:14Space for the kids.
17:15But you don't have a second living space or family room in this house like you do across the street.
17:21Yes.
17:21Would need to figure out storage for all their stuff.
17:24But I think a lot of the rooms are actually going to feel a little bit bigger.
17:26Like even the kitchen over here.
17:28This is a lot bigger than what you're working with across the way.
17:32It's a little cramped.
17:34The kids could easily just get stuck.
17:36You know it's cramped.
17:37Yeah.
17:37When you're putting these little like baby bumpers at my head level, you know it's cramped.
17:41But the house has a nice big footprint here for the kitchen area.
17:45There's one bedroom downstairs, which you could use as an office.
17:47It's actually pretty big.
17:48Okay.
17:48Upstairs, three bedrooms, one bathroom.
17:51That would give us plenty of space.
17:53I mean, I think this is perfect.
17:55Garrett would love this.
17:56Look at his yard.
17:57Wow.
17:58And this is exactly what we've been wanting in a backyard.
18:02It feels like a little vacation spot.
18:04Yeah.
18:04How are you feeling?
18:05Because you don't look like you're as sold in this house as you were across the street.
18:08Yeah.
18:09I mean, it's a lot of work inside.
18:11But honestly, now that you've brought me out here, I've got plenty of space for the kids.
18:16Yeah.
18:17I need to talk to Garrett.
18:19But I think at this point, I mean, we'd love to be the ones to get ahead and actually put
18:24in an offer.
18:25Before it goes on the market?
18:27Yeah.
18:27Yeah.
18:27Yeah.
18:27If you can get Garrett on a video call right now, show him the place.
18:31I really think if you're going to put an offer in, we need to be able to tell them right
18:34away.
18:34Okay.
18:35The houses here sell fast.
18:36Yeah.
18:36So, good luck.
18:39Hey.
18:39Hi.
18:40All right.
18:41Do you want to see this place?
18:42Yeah.
18:43All right.
18:45Give you a little tour.
18:47I don't want to get our hopes up because the house right across the street sold for 1.6, over
18:531.6.
18:53So, very easily, they could say, no, we want to wait and see how much this house goes for.
18:58But if the listing agent is being honest with their client, a split-level home is not as valuable as
19:04a typical layout for most families.
19:06And so, that means that this house should not sell for the same amount that the one across the street
19:09did.
19:09That's a big room.
19:10It's a big, huge room.
19:12You could put a dining table here.
19:14You could have a massive kitchen expanded.
19:17And then this wall, you could open up and have, like, instead of this table, you could have a breakfast
19:22bar seating that opens to the main area here.
19:25Okay.
19:25I'm just saying, from my little experience, but your dollar will stretch a lot further with this renovation than other
19:32ones where you need a lot more structural work.
19:33I definitely trust you.
19:35When we saw that last house and saw that neighborhood, I can't stop thinking about that neighborhood.
19:40I can't lose another one.
19:42Yeah, no, I agree.
19:43I think we need to offer what we need to to stick out.
19:47I feel 1.5 might be enough to stimulate their interest.
19:52Does that leave us some room to then, I guess, address some of the things we called out in the
19:56kitchen?
19:57Well, you said you'd be willing to go up to 1.7 to make it perfect.
20:00$200,000 is going to give you what you need for the renovation.
20:03I think at this point, like, we've put in enough offers and lost out.
20:06I'm definitely ready for us to find our place.
20:09I'm going to write the offer up now.
20:10We'll get it over to them right away.
20:12And I'm going to call them right now because I want them to know it's coming.
20:14Okay.
20:15Okay.
20:16All right.
20:16Let's do it.
20:16All right.
20:17We got this.
20:18I am trying my best not to envision our future here.
20:23But at the same time, you have to be, you know, you have to be envisioning your future if you're
20:27willing to put in your entire life savings.
20:30So we walked through the property.
20:33My clients love it.
20:34I mean, it's a great neighborhood.
20:35It's a great home.
20:36We want to put an offer in.
20:38The home itself, like, it definitely needs a little work, the stairs, the kitchen, but it has everything that we
20:47need.
20:49But this isn't your dream home.
20:52Yeah.
20:53I can't call it a dream home.
20:55I think if we were to figure out the kitchen and the flow of all that, that would be big
21:03for us.
21:03They just want to come in with the absolute best they can afford, and they want to make an offer
21:10at 1.5.
21:12We're not worried about conditions.
21:13We're not worried about anything else.
21:15They just want to get settled into a home with the kids.
21:18I just hope that we can actually get our offer in and make a deal before this goes in the
21:22market, because this will be the exact same situation as across the street.
21:26Multiple offers.
21:27It's going to go for well above lists.
21:55We're not worried about anything else.
21:58No, I'm not joking.
21:59I would not joke about this.
22:00I know how stressful this has been.
22:02Oh, my gosh.
22:04I literally just got the text from the listing agent, so congratulations.
22:08You got a house.
22:10Thank you so much.
22:12Okay, I'll talk to you soon.
22:18Lee and Garrett have signed off on Drew's plan for the kitchen.
22:21So we have our breakfast bar going in here.
22:23Okay, so blow through this wall so you can really see it open.
22:27Peninsula there.
22:28There's no room for an island.
22:29Right.
22:30And then building in a nook in the corner, that's a good use of that space there.
22:33And this is going to be a new window, so we're going to cut out the window where your breakfast
22:38nook is.
22:39That's my hope, is having as much light coming through as possible, because right now it does feel very closed
22:43off and janky with the staircase.
22:45Yeah, we are eliminating the fireplace.
22:46That will give us way more options for storage and furniture layout.
22:50The only issue is right now, which maybe we need to talk to Malia about, the bottleneck here at the
22:56front door, we would get that rail out of there.
22:58One big step across here, it'll invite people in to the living room, and then we've got space to do
23:05whatever we want over here.
23:07Okay.
23:07Continue on with demo?
23:09Yeah, let's do it.
23:24All right, hey, we have company.
23:26Hello, good timing.
23:29Well, hello.
23:29I think we need to talk a little, right?
23:32Talk a little finish?
23:33Yeah.
23:35You got the house.
23:36So big celebration in order for that, but that's only the start of this journey, because we have a lot
23:42of work to do in a very short period of time.
23:44Right.
23:44First of all, we need to know, what are your priorities?
23:46I mean, we'd love to see it beautiful and nicely designed, but I think our number one priority is just
23:53function.
23:54Sorry, did you just eye roll when you said that?
23:56I trust that you will make it beautiful.
23:59That's why I'm not worried about that, but for us, it's just like function, kids, clutter, chaos, like, bleh.
24:05We've got a decent amount of stuff.
24:06Okay.
24:06I'd say it's a lot of kids stuff.
24:07We have so many things we can't even, we don't even know.
24:10Yeah, we've started to put some stuff in the garage and set aside, sort of like, how can we tuck
24:13some of that away?
24:15It's just like constant clutter, we just need good storage space.
24:19Storage is obviously a good thing. We're doing all new cabinetry in the kitchen.
24:51Right.
24:53Nice and clean.
24:53Yes.
24:54Cool.
24:54You've got dead space under the stairs. We can open that up, put flooring in, add some shelves and baskets
24:59to keep shoes organized, and a door to keep things looking neat and tidy.
25:03That sounds good.
25:04We can also consult with a professional organizer to help sort and manage some of the chaos.
25:09All right.
25:09Let's do it.
25:10From an aesthetic standpoint, keeping in mind that we're going to look at all durable products, do you see anything
25:15here that jumps out to you?
25:17I'm personally, like, a cleaner look, so I like the ones that, like, are a little bit simpler.
25:23I think in general we like more natural-looking tones.
25:27Yeah.
25:27I don't mind a little texture. I like the clean, but, like, I would probably lean towards this.
25:31So you like this kind of realm here with some veining in it?
25:33Yeah.
25:34Okay. Here, give us a little, like, pull through there and have a little look. Tell us wall color, what
25:39you're thinking, and then for accents in this space.
25:41Oh, wall color.
25:42Go for both.
25:43It's like a test.
25:43Nobody likes looking through a fan deck under pressure.
25:46I know. This is a lot.
25:48I'm probably white on the walls.
25:51Yeah. Yeah.
25:52Very light.
25:52Very light.
25:53Light and bright with the walls.
25:55Like, cabinet, I wouldn't necessarily want a dark cabinet, but I do, like, these kind of blues and greens all
26:03in a row.
26:03Not heavy, dark.
26:05It's farmhouse coastal.
26:07I don't, did we make that up?
26:08There can be farmhouses on the water.
26:10Because he's, you know, Colorado, farmhouse, Hawaii, coastal.
26:15We can put that in the design.
26:17But I would say, like, we do love the beach, so things that can kind of bring that coastal beach
26:22feel.
26:23I mean, we can also do real stone in the entry.
26:25We can even do a terrazzo.
26:27We can do, you know, a little of anything.
26:29We'll pull it together, and then we'll see which things actually work together.
26:32Cool.
26:33Okay.
26:33And above all else, storage.
26:35Yes.
26:36Yes.
26:36Okay.
26:37Yes.
26:56I don't know a single person alive who has ever not heard the saying, storage is key.
27:02You can't have enough storage.
27:03We have a family of four.
27:05They have a family of four.
27:05I know how much a family of four needs for storage, and as the kids get bigger, the needs only
27:10get greater.
27:11I just think that you can't have enough closets.
27:14We'll frame it out, and we'll frame it out, and we'll just make it just like a couple of adjustable
27:17shelves or something.
27:19But we're in pretty good shape.
27:20We're in pretty good shape.
27:20We've got the fireplace.
27:21Close this up.
27:22Yeah.
27:22Ready?
27:22So that all came off pretty good.
27:24Electrical's done.
27:25I wonder if we, because we're capping.
27:27Yeah, we'll cap off on top.
27:29At the top of chimney.
27:30I'm wondering if, I mean, if there's any chance of a draft or anything coming down, I would still insulate
27:36in this section as well, just behind the drywall.
27:39Just a little bit of rigid.
27:41Well, we've got insulation, so we could do that.
27:43Yeah.
27:44That's not a problem.
27:44So this is just going to be blank wall smart work.
27:47Yeah.
27:4831 inches.
27:49Mm-hmm.
27:51It's not often that we actually get rid of a fireplace without putting another one back, so it'll just be
27:57a drywalled corner.
27:59This is a smart use of this space.
28:00The way it was configured wasn't optimal, and this just gives them so much better use for seating over here.
28:06Way more options for how to do the furniture.
28:13I know this has been a stressful process.
28:15They've looked at a ton of houses.
28:16They've lost out.
28:17They had their hopes up, and they were crushed.
28:19So it's important for us to get them in there.
28:21These guys went through hell and back to find a home, so I just want them to be super happy.
28:44Hi, guys.
28:44Oh, hey.
28:45How's it going?
28:45Your timing could literally not have been more perfect.
28:48Great to see you.
28:49Good to see you.
28:49Good to see you again.
28:50Good to see you.
28:52Welcome to the party.
28:53Have you seen the chaos in the garage and all the stuff?
28:56I've seen the chaos, and I've seen some photos from the rental.
28:59Okay.
28:59I'm here to help sort through and edit all of the toys and figure out what is the right system
29:03that is easily maintained.
29:04Something that's functional but also beautiful.
29:06It has to look great with the design.
29:07So we have a lot of options.
29:09There's space over there that we can put a cabinet.
29:11The one category that's probably going to be pretty big is arts and crafts.
29:14And that doesn't always look beautiful.
29:16Yeah.
29:16So if we can have cabinetry just to contain paint and things like that.
29:20Yeah, you know what?
29:21Because we don't really have, when I'm thinking, we don't want that in the pantry.
29:24One idea to keep it aesthetically pleasing is to use an opaque woven basket to contain all of the toys.
29:29It's functional and looks great.
29:32For arts and crafts, an acrylic turntable with separate compartments for paintbrushes,
29:37markers, and crayons.
29:38And it's clear so you can see what goes where.
29:41And labeled jars for supplies so the kids know where stuff goes when you kindly ask them to clean up
29:47after themselves.
29:49Even as a grown-up, I can't remember where everything's supposed to go,
29:51but we have it all beautifully labeled.
29:53And then every time we're refilling, it's so easy.
29:55Yes.
29:56My job is to make sure that the system is flawless, it can be maintained long after I'm gone,
30:01and that the whole family can use it.
30:20During the tours, Malia kept saying how she wants the entrance to have some sort of visual interest
30:25that just welcomes you in and drops the jaw.
30:29And I think we can do that with this house.
30:31I mean, a terrazzo floor in there would be stunning.
30:33They would absolutely love that.
30:34But also, I think the right railing can help open that up a bit.
30:38Something visual that pulls you into the space and makes you feel welcome,
30:41that's what you want to have.
30:46Way better.
30:47Oh, did I not get low enough?
30:48Oh, that works.
30:49Let me give you a little kick.
30:51Good morning.
30:52Boink.
30:53Boink.
30:53What's happening?
30:54Yo, making some nice clean...
30:56I mean, the hardwood should run all the way in here.
30:58That's...
30:58Hey, hey.
30:59I made the executive decision to remove that stud,
31:02so I just run the hardwood all the way in.
31:04Do you want instead to do the tile?
31:07I think we're light on tile, so...
31:10Well, we're done with tile, right?
31:10Because the tile's finished.
31:11Yeah.
31:14But I'll clean this up, Drew.
31:16Oh, guys.
31:17Hold on.
31:18Hold on.
31:18Uh-huh.
31:20What's with the...
31:21There's no bull nose or anything on the top level.
31:27Hold on.
31:28This is supposed to match the lower level, right?
31:30Well, it just...
31:31It never looks totally right.
31:35Oh, what's with the pattern?
31:39That does not look good.
31:41What's with this whole blank section?
31:43Yeah, why is it so bare?
31:44Is that just...
31:44That's just the way it came.
31:46That's...
31:46Oh, yeah.
31:47When they were laying that,
31:49they should have looked at the pattern it was creating.
31:52No, actually, that looks awful.
31:53Oh.
31:54Look at how stark it is here.
31:56Like, this looks good.
31:57They've kind of matched it up, but this...
31:59Even the color looks awful.
32:00They should never have used a blank tile like this.
32:02That should have been off-cut.
32:04Oh, I think that's...
32:06And that's the first thing you see when you walk in.
32:15We ordered this online,
32:17and I don't remember any of the tiles being half blank.
32:20Hold on.
32:20Let me see.
32:21Some nosing.
32:22You said we...
32:22Do we have any more of the...
32:23I think there's a few pieces of tile left,
32:26but not much.
32:28There's three pieces.
32:29We can demo the tile,
32:31but Jonathan's asking about a nosing
32:33to match this nosing.
32:37So...
32:38All right.
32:39Well, that automatically is better
32:41because you're basically cutting up the stairs.
32:42Yeah, cut this corner right here, like that,
32:44and all of a sudden,
32:45this pattern would blend perfectly with the other tile.
32:48And then for this,
32:49I know we have more of our bull nose in here.
32:52Hold on a sec.
32:53All right, that's over here, Jonathan.
32:54Is it?
32:55Yeah.
32:56So would we cut the tile back, though,
32:58the extra couple of inches?
32:59Yeah, which, of course, is not ideal.
33:01Yeah, exactly.
33:02Oh, that looks actually a lot cleaner.
33:03So that will look a lot better.
33:06It never looks good
33:08to have indifferent materials
33:11exactly in line with each other.
33:26Don't chip the paint.
33:32Look at your butt.
33:33It looks ridiculous.
33:34Who cares?
33:35Dusty butt.
33:35We need a butt shot.
33:40Tell me your story.
33:41No, don't sit on me.
33:42Oh, my God.
33:43All right.
33:44You...
33:44I did not pay for this.
33:53Presley.
33:54Presley.
33:54Presley, Marlon.
33:55You guys want to come over?
33:56To the boat?
33:57Yeah.
33:58No, it's so close.
33:59It's like...
34:01Wow.
34:02Oh, you thought they were going to crash into each other?
34:03You're collision?
34:04As you can see from our kids,
34:06like, they just love this park.
34:07They love being by the beach.
34:08They love collecting things at the beach.
34:10So we spend a lot of time out here.
34:12We don't have any family locally,
34:15so it has been a lot on us.
34:17It definitely is a bit of an island.
34:20Our jobs are very busy.
34:22We have two kids starting school.
34:24It's certainly a lot these days.
34:26Societies aren't really made for two working parents
34:29and without family around.
34:31And having grown up in Hawaii
34:32and having community and family all around,
34:35it was definitely a big shock coming here.
34:38But that is also why this area,
34:40you know, it's become our community
34:42that we hope to stick around with.
35:34There's a surprise here,
35:35because obviously we do the drawer storage all the time.
35:38There's secret storage.
35:40The base of this table.
35:42Oh, awesome.
35:43Oh, for arts and crafts stuff.
35:45Yeah.
35:45Oh, amazing.
35:46The extra little organizations,
35:48there's going to be a little treat for them.
35:57The boys are finishing up inside there,
35:59so it's just going to be a couple minutes.
36:01Are you ready to get into this neighborhood officially?
36:03Yes.
36:04Oh, yes.
36:04We are ready to get into the neighborhood
36:06and get back to the South Bay.
36:08Just, I mean, to start to, like,
36:10be settled down,
36:12get to know our neighbors.
36:14Whoa, whoa, whoa.
36:15Looks like they're ready.
36:15Hello, hello.
36:16You ready?
36:17Either we're going to absolutely hit the mark,
36:20or you guys are going to see it again.
36:22What's up?
36:22Hey.
36:23I'm very, very excited for you guys.
36:25We are.
36:25We're super excited.
36:27Look at this smile.
36:27I can't even, I don't,
36:28I can't even function right now.
36:30I mean, in another world,
36:31it could have been that house you were moving into.
36:34Very true.
36:35Very true.
36:35I think you picked the better house.
36:37I think you did.
36:38Tell them.
36:38The things that you did not like about this house
36:41before the layout, the split level,
36:43I actually think makes it a more unique and beautiful home
36:46than some other standard houses in the neighborhood.
36:48We're super excited.
36:48We cannot wait.
36:49Take a deep breath.
36:51Let's get you in this house.
36:52Yeah.
36:52All right, let's check it out.
36:53So ready.
36:58Step right in.
37:04Oh, my God.
37:05Oh, my God.
37:08This is all for you and the kiddos.
37:15Oh, my God.
37:17Oh, my God.
37:18What?
37:19No.
37:19I did not expect this.
37:20No.
37:21I did not expect this at all.
37:22What?
37:23Where are we?
37:24Okay.
37:25Are you brain glitching?
37:26I think so.
37:27I don't even know what to look at first.
37:29What's it taking first?
37:30I mean, the stairway does have a great look.
37:34I mean, what you guys did with it,
37:35it looks so much better than what it was before.
37:38Doesn't it look amazing?
37:38Your first impression is so nice.
37:41Oh, my God.
37:44It's so open.
37:45This flow of the stairs is what Jonathan was talking about before, just opening this up
37:48a little bit.
37:48Yeah, you can really notice coming down.
37:51Beautifully.
37:51What do you think?
37:52Floors are incredible.
37:53I love this at the start.
37:55The tile there looks great.
37:57Oh, my God.
37:57We haven't had, like, a setup, like, a place for the whole family.
38:01This is incredible.
38:01I honestly...
38:02Oh, my gosh.
38:03What's going through your hair?
38:04I don't think this is our house.
38:05I'm just, like, just the flood of everything we've been through to get here.
38:09Like, we have a cuddle couch now.
38:11This is nice.
38:11We wanted a...
38:12For the kids.
38:13Yeah, the whole family.
38:15That feels good.
38:15Oh, my gosh.
38:16Not only can you cuddle up, but you can cuddle and craft.
38:19Oh, my gosh.
38:20Wow, look at that.
38:20Look at that.
38:22That's amazing.
38:23We know that nothing is more important for families than having storage.
38:28Some of it comes through furniture, and some of it comes through better use of your existing
38:33spaces.
38:34Oh, my gosh.
38:35Look at that.
38:36So we got some baskets.
38:37Each of you have a basket for shoes.
38:39Storage in there.
38:40I didn't even notice that coming in.
38:42We have kids' stuff tucked away and organized, so you can see.
38:45You have the trains.
38:46You have the cars.
38:47Amazing.
38:47With the baskets.
38:48Oh, my gosh.
38:50This is real.
39:05This was a stressful search for a home.
39:07It's not easy to find a house in this area.
39:10I mean, so many people we know dream of being in this area, and somehow the stars aligned,
39:16and you made it happen.
39:18Well, at first they didn't.
39:19Here, there's a house.
39:20Nope, you're not going to have that house.
39:22I think we've still been honestly coming to terms with the fact that we got here in the
39:27beach area that we've been wanting.
39:30And honestly, now that we have a house here as well, it's pretty overwhelming.
39:34Oh, no.
39:35Now you're going to cry.
39:36We've both worked so hard, and we met here in the South Bay.
39:42We don't have our family here.
39:45It's truly us.
39:46It's us and the kids.
39:47And this is the start of just our lives.
39:53Yeah.
39:53And honestly, I feel like I've had this anxiety in the pit of my stomach for 12 months now,
40:00and it's just kind of settled.
40:02It is honestly incredible.
40:03I can't believe it's our dream home.
40:06Yeah.
40:07Like, I can't believe you can just see outside.
40:10You can literally see all the way through.
40:13Yeah.
40:13How cool is this breakfast bar?
40:15Amazing.
40:19Yeah, okay, I haven't even, like, soaked this all in yet.
40:23I love the countertops.
40:25It's not too veiny.
40:27Is she looking more lovingly at the counter than she is at you?
40:30It's okay.
40:31I hope it's temporary, but...
40:33Look, you matched with the green in there.
40:35I know.
40:35Honestly, the color of the cabinets is perfect.
40:38It's honestly perfect.
40:39Look at this right here.
40:41Oh.
40:42Wow.
40:43Mama likes it.
40:45You guys have not only what's a beautiful kitchen, but it's packed with technology as well.
40:50I love the fact that you're not wasting counter space with your microwave and storage drawers.
40:56Look at all that space.
40:56That's crazy.
40:58Oh, and look at the farmhouse sink.
41:01Dishwasher.
41:02This is our dishwasher.
41:03I didn't realize.
41:05It's not there.
41:05This is a gorgeous kitchen, guys, compared to what was here before.
41:08This is, yeah, this is like a night and day.
41:10I'll actually like cooking now.
41:12I know.
41:12Yeah.
41:13There are some amazing touches in here.
41:15This is like our dining space now.
41:17This matches.
41:18We've been dreaming of a nook.
41:19And the window.
41:20There's a window here.
41:21I know.
41:21It's crazy.
41:22So not only did we squeeze in a beautiful fridge.
41:26Wow.
41:27Check out all the storage.
41:29Oh, my gosh.
41:30Look at that.
41:32Talk about amazing.
41:33The kids can then choose their drawer just for them.
41:35Wow.
41:36That's awesome.
41:37But that's not the coolest one.
41:37No.
41:37Uh-oh.
41:38Oh, gosh.
41:38Oh.
41:39Push on that.
41:39Yes.
41:40Yes.
41:40I think I know what this is.
41:41Push on it right there.
41:42Okay.
41:43Storage.
41:44Wow.
41:45That's just for the kids.
41:46Yay.
41:46And then open the drawer in the front.
41:51So you have literally anywhere we can possibly.
41:54Oh, wow.
41:54These are big.
41:55These are big.
41:55It's great.
41:56The natural wood on the floors, the tables.
42:00And honestly, it feels like roomy for just kind of being tucked away.
42:03It's a lot of space.
42:04It doesn't feel like a little afterthought.
42:06You can actually get six people around.
42:07It's pretty easy.
42:08Yeah.
42:09If you were buying this kitchen already finished, it would not be within your budget.
42:13Right.
42:14Yeah.
42:14This is honestly incredible.
42:15I don't think I've seen you smile this much since I've known you.
42:19I love it.
42:20I'm in disbelief.
42:21Thank you, guys.
42:22This is honestly more than we could have ever dreamed of.
42:25This is crazy.
42:27We've been through a lot with our home buying journey.
42:31I mean, money and living in Southern California has always been tough.
42:37I am glad that we stuck it out.
42:40It is pretty incredible what kind of aligned together for us to end up here.
42:45That anxious feeling is kind of gone.
42:47Everything is just so well thought out.
42:49Yeah.
42:50And it's got a nice beach feel that we definitely wanted.
42:54We met in the South Bay.
42:55We're now building our family here.
42:58And it's something I have always dreamt of.
43:02And we're never moving again.
43:04Yeah.
43:04Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
