00:21If you want to know what I've been doing for the last four years, I was in a cult, man.
00:29In 2017, there was a lot of Caucasian male killing a lot of black people.
00:36A lot of black people seem to be dying all the time at the hands of people that were supposed
00:40to be protecting us.
00:42You know this is not how life's supposed to be.
00:45Get to the sun.
00:48Nature Boy definitely made it seem like what he had for the black community was a utopia.
00:53We are Melanation, we are here to show you who you are.
00:58The end-all be-all solution for every single black person in the world.
01:03Known as Nature Boy.
01:05Nature Boy.
01:05Nature Boy.
01:06It was like waking up in paradise.
01:09There were a ton of people coming from all over the world.
01:12The beautiful nature places that he would go to.
01:16Oh my goodness, everybody wants to experience that.
01:18Melanation is out here for you.
01:21Nature Boy's use of social media seemed to bridge the gap between an online influencer and a street creature.
01:29Log on Melanation TV.
01:32Nature Boy was going live on Instagram a lot.
01:34It was clear to see that he wanted to build a following.
01:37Is this thing working?
01:39We took it off to become leaders of the black community.
01:43It's gonna heal my people from slavery.
01:46He was obsessed with filming himself.
01:49We got the police out there.
01:50They can't fuck with us.
01:51He had no understanding that he's filming his own demise.
01:58It's cult leader 101.
02:00I'm God.
02:01You should listen to me.
02:02I'm here forever.
02:03I am the black man.
02:04I am God.
02:04It's alright.
02:14I am going to give you a pan around for sure.
02:30We're gonna' give ya a pan around.
02:34we in the middle of the river man i'm gonna teach you how to become pure get
02:39away from negative ass people the key is to isolate yourself remember this journey is your own
02:49the first post that i saw of melanation was a video of nature boy himself sitting on a rock
02:57in the middle of a river in costa rica look at how beautiful your people is some of the initial
03:03things that i heard nature boy say were things like just simple like let's get back into nature
03:10that was huge for him squad in the building you he would have videos where he would be in nature
03:16we are the heroes of the black community we are the pioneers in the beginning of this
03:21nature boy definitely made it seem like what he had for the black community was a utopia he would
03:27make it look good online the beautiful nature places that he would go oh my goodness everybody
03:33wanted to experience that costa rica is one of the most beautiful and green places that you could
03:39live i thought i was joining a group that was desiring to leave the commotion of the city life
03:51of you know the hustle and bustle the nine to five your bills are basically what you're working for
03:58you get caught up in this trap a group that wanted to be more simple more natural more sustainable a
04:06group that was about health that was about solving issues non-violently we don't need to be violent
04:15we don't need to be angry all we need to do is become one with nature
04:32i was born and raised in butler georgia racist segregated
04:40my prom was the first prom where black people and white people went together they are making history
04:47with their school's first integrated prom if you want to be successful in this world then you have
04:53to do well academically so that's what my theme was straight a's all the way throughout school 18
05:02graduate go to college went into the military shortly after that 2009 once i left the military
05:12it's like what do i do now there was a void present because the military provided me a sense of
05:18belonging
05:19for eight years brotherhood network huge for the first time in a long time
05:27i felt like i didn't belong anywhere this is a movement
05:35y'all better get here hurry up baby
05:44when i first heard about validation it was about 2017. the president-elect of the united states
05:53donald john trump the trump thing going on a lot in america around that time there was a lot of
06:00cops
06:01killing a lot of black people of course it was easy to believe that we're supposed to be separated from
06:07society because that was happening a lot in our community get out of the car and then you
06:25all of these things collectively provided an avenue for me to be like i'm done with america
06:35reflection listen to me don't let nobody stop you from manifesting what you want
06:412017 was the first time that youtube recommended me a nature boy video got ready to go deep again
06:49i'm the master teacher none of y'all can with me homie i speak actual facts the master teacher
06:56drops never before her information video it had 500 000 views on it nothing dies in nature
07:02because it's immortal it feeds off itself it sustains itself i'm like wow there's a lot of people that
07:10are watching this so it must mean that this must have some truth to it i'm thinking that because it
07:17has 500 000 views that that equates to 500 000 people and so that was a major part in my
07:27indoctrination process of continuing to watch more and more videos
07:34we are melanation we are here to show you who you are you can't tell me i ain't home everything
07:41online
07:42seemed cool this is costa rica right here we at the market bailing our food out of jail
07:48coconut gang mango mango mango it was about peace it was about nature it was about the sun it was
07:55about living healthy and simple like that's what it was being presented as they're cool people
08:11my name is velvet marquez i am from new orleans louisiana when i was younger my parents never took me
08:18outside of my community we weren't in more gentrified places of new orleans where rich people live
08:27in our community people who are of the minority we experience extreme poverty we do not have access
08:36to adequate housing adequate food sources i just didn't want to be depressed anymore i didn't want
08:45to feel lonely anymore i felt invisible like i was just so different from everybody else and didn't have
08:51a place in the world i was deep into college and i found social media to be a place for
08:57me to express
08:57myself nature boy was in my feed and so i started to look at the tribe melanation is the perfect
09:06group to
09:06join because you're going to be around that melanin melanin is what creates the pigment in your eyes
09:15sphere and skin melanation was geared more toward the idea that if you have more melanin then you were
09:24closer to the earth we are all reflections and refractions of the sun this was a group of african americans
09:36darker skinned people what we would call melanated people coming together for our cause so this was
09:43revolutionary to me i felt immediately like wow this is a group of people where i can express myself
09:52and i could potentially be heard this could be where my life changes for the better
10:01uh what's going on y'all i'm omet you can find me on facebook at omet the ancient
10:06after watching many of the videos i decided to reach out to one of the people in the group who
10:12i
10:13thought i would have a natural genuine pure connection with his name is omeg
10:22two weeks had went by through our exchange of conversation ideas the mind the heart on a very
10:31spiritual level i thought i found the love of my life
10:35my mind was just like gotta be with you gotta be there gotta be close to you i want to
10:42see how this
10:42evolves in real life i had never left the united states i did not have a passport
10:50so i put one foot in front of the other to get my passport and i was like i'm gonna
10:55go
10:57i just absolutely knew that i was not coming back i knew that this was the end of me ever
11:04experiencing
11:04being in the states ever again
11:19flying to costa rica and meeting omeg for the first time was one of the most beautiful experiences i've
11:28ever had in my life as we were driving from the airport the scenery outside of the vehicle was
11:38just mountains on top of mountains for stretches of miles me and omeg were so wrapped into each other
11:46my world disappeared i remember thinking to myself like my romantic desire dream has come true
12:01when we finally arrived omeg introduced me to nature boy when he first opened his mouth was when my world
12:10got dark
12:29and nature boy was 34 years of age when i initially met him physically his appearance was very attractive
12:37but outside of his physical attractiveness to me he just was like a father i just pictured him as a
12:45father like his demeanor like all of his mannerisms was just like dad vibes and that's how i saw him
12:53i looked at him as like a guru you know so i had a lot of respect for him it's
12:57like having respect for
12:58god in a way as we started getting into the more detailed parts of their everyday life
13:11i thought it was cool it was different you know they lived out of tents at the time they had
13:19a home
13:21nice kitchen this is so good huge yard it was like waking up in paradise every day
13:32going from a place where it was hard and just depressive to a place of liberation being free
13:44i just literally felt like i was inhaling life
13:54these people are from louisiana new york they're from all over the states and so there's a level of
14:02familiarity involved it's like oh man these people you know come from where i come from they
14:08understand the racism injustice that i've experienced in america you know
14:22my name is chantelle i go by the t on youtube and i was introduced to melination via nature boy
14:31aka
14:31elizio i would watch him all the time melination is out here for you i'm going to show you how
14:38ej is
14:39cultivating the land it was appealing probably to people who were looking for community or looking for
14:45um to live off-grid but what it looks like to someone like me is elizio just selling a dream
14:55a pipe dream
14:57anybody that got any common sense can feel that something's coming
15:05he felt that this is where i belong because i have autonomy out here
15:09i make the rules i call the shots and if people want to follow me they can
15:17once anybody joins melination you have no choice but to change your name usually your name comes from
15:23him you're not a number you're not a social security number you're not a birth certificate you're not your
15:28last name you're a cosmic being with a sound there was a belief that your name as far as it
15:35pertains to
15:36your birth certificate social security number ids those things were an illusion i refuse to be
15:42called velvet because that is not me stop calling me velvet when he would call upon that name he would
15:48call upon the character that's in his mind that you are all right so everybody tell them your name
15:54reflection my name is key i'm ej um omet you can find me on facebook at omet the ancient
16:03he would express on multiple occasions that if he had named you he had some type of power over you
16:09he needed to call me something else so that he can feel like he was the creator and orchestra
16:16of who i was to him in that moment the name changes were really just nature boy flexing his muscle
16:23asserting his power and dominance over these people we are all doing witchcraft so what someone calls you
16:29is summoning and invoking who you truly are we were only able to eat certain items and we only was
16:41able to eat things outside of what he originally told us to eat if he had consented nature is the
16:48way
16:48you got to eat from the earth you got to eat organic it was really a like strict diet that
16:55he wanted us to
16:55follow because he wanted the public to believe that his way of life and his regimen behind eating was
17:02the healthiest so that was another way he implemented structure
17:09recall this the pot this is not poop no it's very sacred the government is taking this and
17:17putting it in the toilet and disconnecting you from the universe
17:24in the yard everybody had their own tent that they would rest in at night we were not allowed
17:32to use the restroom in the house we were all ordered to use the restroom outside nature boy's reasoning
17:39behind it he wanted to limit the usage of the plumbing system because it wasn't healthy and it was
17:47contaminated all water so i was thinking to myself how am i going to execute my first restroom experience
17:58i woke up in the wee hours of the morning my first night there
18:03and i had to use the restroom so bad
18:10i actually made a decision to go into the house and use the toilet
18:18i let it loose and i flushed the toilet like twice
18:25that next morning we congregated and there was a talk about who went to the bathroom last night
18:34i denied it the following day of course i had to use the bathroom so then i started experiencing using
18:42it outside and then eventually i grew a tomato plant from my own poop
18:50it was dead that serious
18:54tell them about what we got going on bj this is tomato these are tomatoes right here
19:01yeah this is definitely tomato you can smell it it was like this extreme connection to nature they
19:08would be talking about you know living off the land and using the bathroom in the woods instead
19:12of in the toilet because it connects them with nature that's what a watermelon look like i want to
19:17show them something i'm always eating watermelon so i empty my pot over here this is where i empty my
19:22pot
19:23here you see the black seeds from the watermelon i eat it's coming out right here see and look at
19:30this
19:31look at this coming out of my soil watermelon some people will look at it and be like wow this
19:37is some
19:37of the most bizarre nonsense i've ever heard but a lot of people will see that and be like this
19:43guy
19:43knows what he's talking about and i should give up my life and join him
19:58come on ladies where y'all at y'all want a real man he's intelligent he's a virgo
20:04that's a good man right here he about six three he recruited his members utilizing his current members
20:10so he would have his male members attract women women would reach out to them they'd be in their
20:17inboxes trying to get them to come there and he utilized those men to recruit them into the group
20:24they need wives we need some good women that's in tune with nature they need goddamn rob i never
20:30had dated a dark-skinned guy until i met omak this is ej the ancient this is omak's wife that's
20:37his
20:37direct nature boy kept asking me questions like are you sure you want to be with omak do you sure
20:42you want to be with him do you sure you want to be in a relationship with him it came
20:46across creepy to
20:47me but i didn't take that personal but it became uncomfortable for me because i was in a relationship
20:57so legio you didn't want any of those women to be with any of the guys there he wanted them
21:02all for
21:14himself
21:15i'm alex i'm from toronto canada my family's from portugal had a very beautiful family big family
21:24as i got older i just really loved sports which kind of led me into fitness and becoming a bodybuilder
21:35my story kind of starts back in 2016. i was watching all these documentaries about
21:42factory farming and why we shouldn't eat meat and i kind of fell really deep into that
21:53the first video i seen of nature boy he was in his apartment and he was showing his grocery haul
21:58and that's kind of what intrigued me seeing what he was eating this is what i eat every day
22:04i don't use a refrigerator so drink my water water in here pistachio this is my transition before i go
22:14into nature and move out of the country his charisma really pulled me in it was like this guy's like
22:20some spiritual gangster welcome back reflection i was like slowly building a relationship with nature
22:31boy online and he was treating me like a brother so i got a sense of this guy likes me
22:37he likes who i am
22:39come on in reflection nature boy was going live on instagram a lot on youtube listen to nature boy right
22:48now i'm about to show you how sex works how your body works the process of going from a viewer
22:56to actual
22:58involvement in the cult was gradual i went from a viewer to a commenter now i'm getting actual responses
23:07back from them so the engagement level has increased this is a new level then the next level
23:13was actually speaking to them in real time right here we do this salute it was clear to see that
23:20he
23:20wanted to build the following follow him on facebook right now he wanted people to know who he was
23:26and he wanted his message to get out there whatever you take give back and life will be full of
23:32blessings share the video when i was watching online i never seen any white people but he did
23:39also say that being white is not a disadvantage that you can build this up you can tan you can
23:44get
23:44darker and then kayla showed up i'm really starting to get settled in here that was the first white
23:51person i'd seen with nature boy so that whole stigma of oh this is only for black people kind of
23:56changed we start tonight with the bizarre story about a corner broke woman who's now in costa rica
24:02living in what she calls a cult i host a podcast called the nighttime podcast which covers unique
24:08and offbeat canadian stories kayla reed left corner brook under the guise of attending a church
24:14conference in late february then she was reported missing so i was watching the story of the disappearance
24:22of the missing person kayla reed when the revelation came out that she appeared in the background
24:27of a costa rican preacher's youtube channel yeah i've never been so happy i'm becoming happier
24:37and happier every day here really feeling like i'm with my family i started watching the story and
24:43trying to understand how a young woman from newfoundland ended up across the world in a youtube video
24:50so this is the things that he would have his members do before they could join leave your family you
24:55have to separate yourself from your own family isolate yourself and only listen to me attachments
25:02have been given to you that you must overcome stop the illusion of family i'm your family
25:09i was almost speechless at just how intense he was it certainly left me with concern over the people
25:18with him because it was clear that no part of this was an act you know this is not how
25:24life's supposed
25:25to be get to the sun i can only imagine how concerned her parents were they put out nature boy
25:33to be some
25:34kind of criminal a cult leader but my but they never tell you what my coat is about
25:42what really stood out to me was how much power nature boy or elizio bishop had within that group
25:50within that tribe i'm a culture and the culture is to live in harmony with nature
25:56the media in canada was using the term cult and he was defending himself saying we are not a cult
26:02we're a culture i think from my experience and everything i saw it would fit that stereotypical
26:09definition of cult cult leader is a person who recognizes vulnerabilities that every human being has
26:16and exploits those vulnerabilities to manipulate people to get them to do
26:22what they want them to do did i call you like hey come join us be here with us am
26:29i controlling
26:30or manipulating your mind her family started to get involved because they noticed that it was in fact
26:36the cult wait isn't nature boy uh prejudice isn't he racist how does he have white people there her
26:44family involved the consulate they involved the government they involved everyone that they could
26:50think of to make enough noise and get enough people involved in in their plight to get her home
26:57well elizio bishop is a 34 year old from atlanta georgia in our conversation he was adamant reed traveled to
27:04costa rica on her own accord and had not been brainwashed bishop adds that uh kayla is free to go
27:11whenever she wants to leave yeah i'm going back to canada the first interview that i did with kayla
27:21was days after she returned to canada you are tuned to the nighttime podcast now here is your host jordan
27:30bell party how did you feel hearing that you know people were looking for you when i first seen the
27:37news like i just thought it was kind of just ridiculous can you tell me about why you left we
27:43had a
27:44meeting and nature boy had decided that i should uh head back because of all the uh all the hype
27:51hayla
27:52brought the attention national attention to this group people started really watching who this cult leader
27:59is and what ideology he's spreading so i really couldn't fathom at the time like how big it was
28:05i just was like oh we ended up on the news it spread like wildfire
28:12i got my one way to costa rica they called themselves melanesia young people claiming to
28:20understand the truths of the world i'm the cult leader i'm nature boy what do you think of that
28:24people saying it's a cult i think that uh canada is a cult like the us is a cult he's
28:31a blessing
28:32that rare breed my inbox jam packed with the one question how do i join it was just further spreading
28:40his message deeper into social media and across multiple social media platforms somewhere along the
28:46way that turned into a large group of followers who hung off his every wish and command when i speak
28:53to you i speak with authority what i'm doing is beyond martin luther king i love myself no some of
28:59y'all need to hear this my mindset at that time was to go to costa rica and literally never
29:05come back
29:16when i first got to costa rica it was really such an amazing experience i'm in a new country the
29:22air
29:22smells different the fruit tastes better but maybe going here to where nature boy is that's where i'll
29:28find my truth big mistake though i head up to this mountaintop where he was living the trip was really
29:39cool we were like driving up a mountain the views were impeccable like incredible i think i was just
29:47super excited ready to meet nature boy
29:55it was like a big bro like big hug shook my hand and it was a good feeling like it
30:02was cool
30:02i felt like i was meeting someone that i was meant to meet by the time i got to the
30:07group there was
30:0813 of us for me it was very exciting everyone was super friendly it was a very warm welcome
30:18day one bags are checked
30:21what you brought with you and i think this is the first moment where i was kind of a bit
30:26alarmed because
30:27they were asking for me to give my debit card to uh the card holder for everyone's debit cards and
30:33finances i was kind of like whoa is this good to do like is this all right to hand over
30:40my debit card
30:41everybody puts money into the pot we give everything that we have to our group
30:46he initially started out utilizing money from his barbershop business which he had sold
30:53he started to get donations as well from a lot of people that wanted to follow him
30:57three hundred thousand dollars that was the the biggest lump sum he's ever received
31:04if you truly gonna heal it's gonna cost you and you're gonna need every fucking penny
31:12the financial support came from people legitimately go to bala nations and willingly
31:18give their finances because they believe in what it is that he's saying they believe in him
31:26i was one of the people who came with roughly three thousand left over from my college tuition and i
31:32was like here you can have it nature boy calls it putting in the pot which means like we all
31:37pull
31:38resources to keep afloat we all want frequency we want family we put our chips together any money that any
31:45member had access to it was it was his what he would tell them is that i provide for the
31:54group but
31:55i'm going to keep a portion for myself too i was like oh we're a family we all pitch in
32:01i'm still
32:02going to eat i'm still going to be able to go on these adventures so just go for it
32:10and then a lot of weird stuff started happening in terms of purchases
32:19we went to the mall one day and for some reason we bought a ping pong table with my credit
32:24card
32:24which was eight hundred dollars i was like why do we need this but i didn't want to question it
32:30because
32:31we were all very scared to question things nature boy was somebody who wanted to start a movement
32:42make it go worldwide make it go viral and just bring in people to control their money
32:49to control their body to control their mind and uh to control their life in every aspect
32:56that's what a cold is to me listen to me very fucking carefully move to costa rica
33:04there was definitely an aggressive side to him a very egotistical side to him where he was the leader
33:10and no one could overpower that there are laws demands things that you must obey
33:18if you didn't do what he said to do you were quickly humiliated you were quickly devalued amongst the
33:24group it became do what he tell you to do or else you will obey the laws of nature or
33:34you will punish
33:48we decided to go on a on a drive to limon
33:56we were driving in the van and we reached this police stop that we had passed already
34:02but this time we got stopped nature boy starts a live video everybody here with me melana nation
34:08with me we want to let y'all know what's going on we got the police out there
34:14we were well over six months worth of passports not being stamped
34:20nature boy encouraged all of us to not get the passports stamped because he didn't want to be
34:26a slave of the united states he found that to be a way to be revolutionary and make a statement
34:34we're not these people
34:36them names don't mean nothing that's not our names we don't we those are the corporations names they
34:41belong to a bank we don't belong to a bank we belong to the earth i'm not getting off this
34:45bus and we
34:46ain't getting off this bus we've been moving as a unit they try to make us separate we're not
34:50separating bro when nature boy started to riot over the internet this made the police angry because they
34:57didn't want to force us to do anything they just wanted to understand why we weren't stamping our
35:04passports they said you can't sign the document each one wouldn't want to make you sign and you can't go
35:08free that is not no problem we don't want to sign no papers we don't want to sign no papers
35:13nature boy encouraged all of the melana nation members to not get off the bus and fight for our rights
35:20i'm still on this bus bro i'm one of the doctors i told y'all but he might have to
35:23kill me up in here
35:24and i just want you to know if i die i love every motherfucking one of y'all i did
35:27this for you
35:27he's basically telling us we're gonna die for the truth tonight and that just scared the out of me
35:33they can't with us i want you to know you have to stand up and not be a slave
35:38all of you if you could imagine just like a drum beating in your heart like
35:45like i i just didn't know what you know was going to happen
35:53elizio would always make it a point to live stream these moments these events he was doing so not only
36:00for the purpose of garnering sympathy from the public but also i believe trying to attract new
36:08members as well
36:15damn this video's fucked i just went right under the bus seat to protect myself
36:22i think after that video went live a lot of people even from my own friend group and family
36:28they seen it and they were very alarmed and they were trying to contact me if i was okay
36:34and i think just that whole video was the breaking point for me watching it back and seeing just it
36:40was
36:41it was very horrifying the ending of that video
36:46and it's something that i have to this day a hard time watching because those screams at the end
36:52they kind of haunted me
36:58by resisting they complicated the situation but we always handled it with the necessary force to
37:05control the situation and at no time was there any kind of abuse or offense against them
37:12they beat us down reflection they beat us down he calls that it happened for no reason
37:20it happened because nature boy directed his followers to break the law that's why they were bruised up
37:26it had to be pulled from the van
37:33cops pulled me into their office
37:36and they said you are free to go and i was just like okay what the hell just happened i'm
37:44allowed to leave
38:01i think what changed for me was just being put in a situation where i literally felt like i was
38:08gonna die
38:09and be put in danger which i felt was so unnecessary because we didn't have to go through all that
38:15we
38:15could have just got off the bus and dealt with what the cops wanted instead of creating a whole commotion
38:20but i think that's what his intention was so that it can get a bunch of views and people can
38:25find out
38:34that's why i didn't know who this guy was
38:39when i came back to regular life i just wanted to shut it all off
38:45i deleted all my social medias i didn't want anything to do with nature boy
38:52at that time their tourist visas and legal stay in the country had expired so they were deported
39:07they had just got kicked out of costa rica we are safe we are okay he was saying how they
39:14were
39:14treated they treated us like slaves like slaves slaves slaves and what they were subjected to
39:22they scared of the black man we're strong we're tall and we're black oh they'll take our woman they
39:30love our music but the black man is a threat by now i'm watching the lives like
39:36consistently he would say like that we were in hell if we stayed in america if you were not able
39:42to
39:43sacrifice your life for what is righteous then you will be in hell forever and so i was ready to
39:50get
39:50out of hell i packed one backpack and put like whatever clothes i could fit in there i bought my
39:57ticket and i didn't tell anyone a thing i blocked all my family members numbers
40:04and i just got on the flight y'all better be glad they didn't kill me
40:11because my work is not done yet i am the truth i am god i can't be killed
