00:01This program documents actual homicide investigations.
00:05Criminal charges are often dropped or reduced,
00:07and all suspects shown are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
00:23911, please. Sorry, medical.
00:25I just threw a bunch of gunshots and I made a written shot.
00:28Who shot him?
00:30I don't know. I just heard gunshots,
00:31and I waited a second and I came down here
00:33and I walked in here to the front door.
00:36He's facing out. He's breathing, but he's off.
00:54First responders find a young man inside an apartment,
00:57shot multiple times.
01:00They rushed the victim to the hospital.
01:02Come around.
01:03Barely alive.
01:04I'm on homicide.
01:05You're on our way.
01:17For homicide detectives, their chance of solving a murder is cut in half,
01:22if they don't get a lead within the first 48 hours.
01:38When I first moved to Tulsa, I moved in that apartment right up there.
01:42Got a little history here.
01:44Detective Mark Kennedy will lead the investigation.
01:48Reggie's going to the hospital.
01:49From what we're hearing, the victim's got injuries that are not going to be sustainable.
01:53Obviously, we're starting this off as a murder investigation and working at ICORN.
01:57So we'll start from ground zero, see what we can build up.
02:01Hey, guys.
02:02Victim is John Tavious Crawford.
02:0626-year-old John Tavious Crawford, known as JT, was born in Memphis, Tennessee,
02:11and moved to Tulsa with his family as a teenager.
02:15One of eight siblings, he works at a warehouse and is the father of two young daughters.
02:22All right.
02:23Where are we at?
02:24Keep going straight where the cramps are, Tavious.
02:30Oh, right through here.
02:32The door was open.
02:35There's no sign of forced entry.
02:38He was slumped face down over the ottoman.
02:42John Tavious was shot five times in the head, neck, chest, arm, and hand.
02:49Cartridge casings right there.
02:51It looks like none.
02:53Yeah.
02:54CSI finds five nine-millimeter casings on the living room floor.
02:59He had a blade right next to him.
03:01So it's almost like he was expecting something, wasn't he?
03:04Yeah.
03:05Well, there's no forced entry.
03:07Doesn't look like it's a robbery.
03:12What else, please?
03:14One hour in...
03:15Patrol's police!
03:17Patrol canvases the complex for witness to the shooting.
03:20You didn't hear a gunshot?
03:22Do people frequent his apartment at all?
03:24Does he live in there by himself?
03:26Right.
03:29I heard the gunshots. They were so close.
03:33I knew they were right here.
03:36Then...
03:36What did you guys see tonight?
03:38Officer Cameron Roy finds a couple that was in the parking lot at the time of the shooting.
03:44So we were sitting down here.
03:46We noticed a car that looked like at lunch.
03:51And then we noticed that two black males, um, we walked out there.
03:55She says the two men walked toward John Tevez's apartment.
03:59And then we heard the gunshots.
04:02Oh.
04:02And then after the gunshots, we saw them broke the door.
04:05We got on that cappelin.
04:06They drove off.
04:09Specifically about the truck, do you remember any kind of emblems on it? Stickers?
04:12Um, I remember it had, like, some letter stickers in the back.
04:18She says the truck had stickers on its back windshield.
04:21The white lettering.
04:23But I couldn't make out what it said.
04:25And then what about what they were wearing?
04:27I noticed one of the guys was wearing, like, a jacket, hoodie-type, like, white black lettering over here.
04:34And they were both wearing, like, mini hats, so...
04:37You couldn't see their hair.
04:43All of a sudden, a truck pulls up.
04:45Two guys hop out.
04:46Gunshots they heard.
04:47Two suspects came running back to the car.
04:49Interesting.
04:51The complex has a lot of cameras.
04:53There's a good chance we got a good view of their suspect vehicle.
04:57Unfortunately, the leasing office is closed for the night.
05:00We have to come back to those videos tomorrow.
05:04Neighbors told Patrol that John Tavious lives in the apartment with his girlfriend.
05:08They said she works the night shift at a restaurant nearby.
05:12Patrol will bring John Tavious' girlfriend to homicide for questioning.
05:16Okay.
05:22I'm Reggie.
05:23Kennedy calls Detective Reggie Warren at the hospital to get an update on John Tavious' condition.
05:29What's up, Reggie?
05:30He said it's just a little amount of time.
05:32It's nothing good.
05:33He's pretty jacked up.
05:35Yeah.
05:36The girlfriend's going downtown, so if you just want to head downtown...
05:39Okay, cool. That'll work.
05:40All right. See you there.
05:41All right. All right, bye.
05:43We're going to talk to the girlfriend.
05:46So, shall we find out?
05:56There's no forced entry whatsoever.
05:58Really? Okay.
06:01So, and he had like a machete sitting in the chair where he was found sitting right by him.
06:07So I don't know if he was expecting these guys or what, but if he opened the door, they must
06:13have opened up on him right away.
06:16Well, this girl's going to probably know.
06:18Yeah.
06:19All right, you ready?
06:20Yep.
06:23How you doing?
06:32I just want to know how they teased, boy.
06:36I need him to be okay.
06:37Well, he's at St. Francis Hospital right now, and he's in very serious condition.
06:44I'm not going to sugarcoat it.
06:46There's a good chance he doesn't make it through this.
06:48Oh, my God.
06:59How long have you guys been together?
07:01It was not a year off and on.
07:03Okay.
07:05What time did you go to work, John?
07:06I was at work by 9 o'clock.
07:09Was he at home?
07:10Yes.
07:10How did they go?
07:12It was fine.
07:13You know, we, you know, and then he came by the door.
07:18She says her friend, Dee, stopped by around 8.30 p.m.
07:23Why did he come over?
07:24He's a friend of mine.
07:25He just came to check on me.
07:27Why is he checking on you?
07:29Just to see how he's doing.
07:30It's how he is.
07:32I went outside to talk to her.
07:34And then JT heard me talking to somebody, so he came out to see him.
07:39And then Dee was, like, trying to introduce himself to JT.
07:42JT started going off.
07:43Like, he was yelling, who are you?
07:46You know, and I was like, hey, that's my best friend.
07:49They were just talking crap to each other.
07:51And then I left, and they started arguing.
07:54I went back into my apartment, because I had to get ready for work.
07:56I had to go to work at night.
07:59And then when I heard him still arguing, I went up there.
08:01I said, really?
08:02I said, y'all really gonna do this in front of my apartment?
08:04And then JT...
08:05Come back?
08:06...the house.
08:08Yeah.
08:08Took off.
08:10Okay.
08:12Dee, you know his real name?
08:14D'Angelo.
08:15That's good.
08:16D'Angelo, the type who would come back and try to settle a score?
08:21He's never been that kind of person ever since I've known him.
08:24Ever.
08:26Ever.
08:28Did he say he was gonna come back tonight?
08:31No.
08:32I thought it was squash.
08:35Okay.
08:36So tell me a little more about JT.
08:38Is he still drope or anything?
08:39No.
08:41Other than the incident tonight, have you known of him having a problem recently with anybody else?
08:49He had problems with a whole bunch of people.
08:51Who?
08:52I don't know the people's names.
08:57You know anybody who drives a black avalanche?
09:00No.
09:05Who's his family here?
09:07Mom's name?
09:08Cassie.
09:09And they live in Broken Arrow.
09:10She gives detectives an address for John Tavius' family.
09:14We'll go with him.
09:15Okay.
09:17I'm gonna show you some pictures.
09:25So yeah, you can come over here on this side if you want.
09:31Let's just go first name D'Angelo, right?
09:35Yeah, Smith.
09:36He's black?
09:38Mm-hmm.
09:39How old is he?
09:4048.
09:42Is that him?
09:43I don't think it is.
09:48I don't think it is.
09:50Is that him?
09:52No.
09:53He kind of sort of looks like him.
09:55He has waves.
09:56You just saw him today.
09:58I know.
10:01You're not lying to me, are you?
10:06Trying to protect somebody?
10:10Are you telling me the truth about the name of the guy that came over there tonight and got into
10:15it with him?
10:15No.
10:16You're not telling me the truth?
10:18Dan, you know something then.
10:27What's his name?
10:28D'Angelo.
10:29Smith.
10:31Not D'Angelo.
10:32No.
10:33No.
10:36That's him.
10:37Yes.
10:38D'Anthony Smith is 43 years old and was born in Oklahoma.
10:43He has prior convictions for child abuse, burglary, and possession of a controlled substance.
10:54Well, that really pisses me off that you're trying to lead us off.
10:57Who was over there arguing with your boyfriend just a few hours before he ends up getting shot?
11:03Yeah, but I don't think he would do that.
11:06Then why would you try to protect his name?
11:08Because he was a friend of mine for five years.
11:11But you understand that this is pretty dire and that we're working this like a homicide, okay?
11:16So if there's anything else right now that you know that you haven't told me that I need to know,
11:22you better get it out on the table right now.
11:26That's the only thing.
11:29Okay?
11:30We'll get somebody to get you back to work.
11:39Got to get traces pulled up.
11:41Looking at D'Anthony Smith's information,
11:44these are registered to the Black Dodge Avenger.
11:49Our suspect vehicle is a Black Avalanche.
11:53The complex video is going to be very important to see if we can find either one of those vehicles
11:58show up during the time of the shooting.
12:00While the team waits for the leasing office to open in the morning.
12:03Trying to make a notification.
12:05They head out to notify John Tavius' mother.
12:17Here we go.
12:24Tulsa police.
12:27Hey, how you doing?
12:28What's going on?
12:29John Tavius' brother answers the door.
12:32I was looking for Cassie McNeil.
12:34She going out of town.
12:35Where's she at right now?
12:37It's my mom's birthday this weekend, so...
12:40He says his mom and sister are on their way to Tennessee to celebrate her birthday.
12:44Is that where you all from?
12:46Yes, sir.
12:48John Tavius' been shot.
12:50Yes.
12:51He was shot several times.
12:53Several times. You okay?
12:55As of right now, all I can tell you is he's in critical condition in ICU.
12:59I'm gonna go to LA.
13:01Just go check in, okay?
13:02All right.
13:07Happy birthday, Mom. That's terrible.
13:09I had to hear that on her birthday.
13:16I didn't expect that.
13:21I didn't expect that.
13:23I was expecting nobody to hit that door.
13:24Two, three in the morning I'd say my brother was shot.
13:28I got in my car.
13:30Went to the podium and just laying there emotionally.
13:35It was devastating.
13:37That's the worst experience ever, is getting a call like that.
13:43We had to come drive six hours and just get praying.
13:48Prayed all the way to the hospital for my prayer not to dance.
13:53My baby was gone.
13:56I couldn't do anything.
13:57I was broken.
13:58Heptus, yeah.
14:00Broken.
14:01A lot of times I just sit there and I cry and I cry and I cry.
14:09I miss my baby.
14:1710 hours after John Tavius was shot.
14:21John Tavius succumbed to his gunshot injuries.
14:26So we are now officially working on murder.
14:30We are going to head to the apartment complex, which is supposedly opening at 10 o'clock,
14:34to see if we can extract some video.
14:37There's a camera back there where these witnesses saw the avalanche.
14:42They're describing the black males running to.
14:44So we're going to go see if we can get that.
14:47All right, here we go.
14:55Camera's here.
14:56There's one point.
14:57Yeah, they got one, two, three, four cameras.
14:59If those are working, we should catch something.
15:04Looking at the Mark Kennedy apartment back in 1986.
15:09I moved here right after I moved out of Bartlesville.
15:12I was a trainee in a Walmart.
15:16But retail really wasn't my thing.
15:18So a couple officers used to follow us to the bank.
15:22They said, hey, you got to try to be a cop.
15:24So 35 years later, here I am being a cop.
15:29Best decision of my life.
15:35Well, it's now 10 o'clock.
15:37Let's see if anybody answers.
15:44Hey, this is Detective Kennedy with TPD Homicide.
15:47Hey.
15:48I'm sure you're kind of aware of what happened last night, the shooting out here.
15:51Yeah.
15:53I understand you got video back there.
15:56I was needing to look at that.
15:58Yeah, for sure.
15:58The manager agrees to download their footage from last night and send it to Kennedy.
16:04Well, thank you so much.
16:06Let's play the waiting game.
16:09All right.
16:11I think we're pooped.
16:15We'll start looking at some video.
16:18The witnesses said they saw a black Chevrolet Avalanche.
16:25If Anthony's in the same vehicle during the time of the original disturbance and during the time of the shooting,
16:30then, you know, I think we're on to a really good suspect.
16:43The next morning.
16:45We got the video from the complex.
16:48Kennedy pulls up video from the cameras that face John Tavius' apartment.
16:53I think I can zoom in a little more.
16:56Our apartment that we're looking at is actually going to be right here, this breezeway right here.
17:02So this is around 8.30 PM when John Tavius' girlfriend said that D'Anthony showed up over at the
17:09apartment.
17:12And see, there's D'Anthony.
17:15Looks like he's got all black on with some white shoes.
17:18Walking up to the door right now.
17:22So here they are.
17:26You can see three individuals there.
17:29I believe that was going to be the girlfriend that walked back inside.
17:35See Anthony, John Tavius, right there, talking.
17:43I don't want to see your face around here no more.
17:45You can hear them yelling back and forth to each other.
17:52It's a heated argument.
17:56But D'Anthony's walking back towards his vehicle.
18:04And there goes D'Anthony's Black Avenger.
18:08Fast forward.
18:10Kennedy fast forwards three hours to the time of the shooting.
18:16I hear that gun.
18:19You see two males approach the apartment.
18:32You're home, that's out of here.
18:47To me, one of them looks like he's all in black and has white shoes on, like the guy who
18:52he was having an argument with, D'Anthony.
19:00So they're leaving at 1151.
19:09See, that looks like a Chevy avalanche.
19:12I'll try to slow it down or we can get a little bit more big.
19:22Do you guys think that's Z71 model?
19:25Probably.
19:26Yeah.
19:27It's got the chrome package on it.
19:29You don't see a lot of them that have the chrome strap down it and the chrome handles.
19:33I thought for a minute I was going to get the tag, but it's just too distorted.
19:39The vehicle that D'Anthony's driving doesn't match a suspect vehicle.
19:45So at this point, before we really come in contact with D'Anthony, we want to try to find this
19:50Chevy avalanche that's involved in the murder and see who's driving that vehicle.
19:56We got a good description on the vehicle.
19:58You don't see a lot with the chrome package.
20:00When you find the V1, it's going to be it.
20:05We're running them all through Flock to see if we have pictures.
20:08While some of the team scours license plate cameras for the suspect vehicle.
20:12We're going to go out and see if there's any more video to get.
20:15The businesses across the street have cameras that might hit that street.
20:19Okay.
20:21Kennedy and Detective Max Ryden hope surveillance cameras near the crime scene caught the avalanche's license plate.
20:29How's it going?
20:29All right, is there any chance I can look at your video surveillance?
20:36How you doing?
20:38All right, I'm Detective with Tulsa Police Department.
20:40Do you guys have video surveillance?
20:42We do.
20:43See, I'm trying to catch a suspect vehicle.
20:51But as the first 48 ticks away...
20:56I don't like the wheels on that one at all.
20:57They don't have the chrome line or anything, so I doubt it's it.
21:01They come up empty.
21:04We're going to continue to try to find this unique vehicle that is involved in the murder and get attacked.
21:12We got a personal venture.
21:13We got a truck that we know is involved.
21:17Got good stuff.
21:18We just got to find it.
21:27Two days later...
21:28He used a government card yesterday at a local convenience store.
21:32Detectives learned that D'Anthony Smith made a purchase with his EBT card two days after John Tavius was killed.
21:39I'm sure going to run out there, watch the video, and see if he was with that avalanche yesterday.
21:44We'll just keep beating the bushes until something shakes loose.
21:49All right.
21:50Let's go ahead and pull this.
21:51You'll be lucky.
21:59How's it going?
22:00Any chance I can watch two minutes worth of video?
22:02I know exactly what I'm looking for.
22:04Sure.
22:06Yesterday, at 1512 hours, a guy made a purchase for $6.66.
22:12It doesn't make sense.
22:13He's a black male.
22:17The manager pulls up video from the time of the purchase.
22:21Thanks for your help.
22:26Call Mark Kennedy.
22:27Calling Mark Kennedy.
22:29Work.
22:31What's up, Mark?
22:33Hey, the quick trip our boy yesterday was actually with a white male.
22:38Yeah.
22:39He was with a white male in a red, like, Chrysler car.
22:43I will put that on the text.
22:45Okay.
22:45Thanks, man.
22:46Appreciate it.
22:46All right.
22:47Talk to you later.
22:54D'Anthony showed up with what looks like a white male.
22:57D'Anthony's right back there.
23:02D'Anthony is walking out.
23:06D'Anthony and the white male get into a red SUV.
23:10And then they lead the quick trip.
23:13Witnesses said that they saw two black males jump into the avalanche.
23:18Got to keep an open mind.
23:19I mean, there's a chance that D'Anthony isn't involved.
23:23But I haven't really got any other leads.
23:25We need to find that avalanche and see if there's some connection between D'Anthony and the person who drives
23:33the avalanche.
23:37Where's that truck?
23:39I don't know, man.
23:41The one truck that really stands out, doesn't stand out at all.
23:51The next day...
23:54We're looking at maybe the possible avalanche.
23:57On the 7th...
23:58The day after John Tavius was killed, license plate cameras picked up an avalanche that matches the suspect vehicle.
24:04Did you say Z71 on it?
24:06Yeah.
24:07It did.
24:08Chrome on the door handles.
24:10The wheels.
24:11Are those five spokes?
24:13One, two, three, four, five.
24:15Dark blue.
24:15There's no really stickers, but...
24:17Look at this.
24:18There's a hit.
24:20That night at 12.05 at 8.
24:21At 12.05.
24:22The same avalanche was caught on license plate cameras the night of the shooting.
24:28Bro, look at this.
24:30He has stuff on there.
24:32Detective Vernon McNeil spots stickers on the back window.
24:36I remember it had, like, some letter stickers in the back.
24:43Look at that.
24:44He has VTR.
24:46Less than 24 hours later, he pulled his stickers out.
24:50He took them off.
24:51He pulled them off.
24:52Everything on this vehicle fits.
24:54I think we're onto something here.
24:57The witnesses thought it was black, but it's actually dark blue.
25:00That explains why we couldn't find it right away.
25:03Who's that chick too?
25:04His name is Nathan Lucky.
25:12Hang on, let me see that.
25:15That's the dude from Quick Trip.
25:17Oh, yeah.
25:19Nathan is the white male seen on video at the Quick Trip with DeAnthony.
25:23That's our dude.
25:24He's with this hospital suspect that had beef with our victim.
25:28It's gonna be the connection to the freakin' avalanche.
25:41The owner of the avalanche, 37-year-old Nathan Lucky, owns a mobile mechanic business.
25:48He has prior convictions for robbery with a dangerous weapon, illegal possession of a firearm, and possession of a controlled
25:55drug.
25:58My question is, they said they saw two black guys getting out of it.
26:02He looks white.
26:03He does look white, but it's late at night, they see one black dude running, they may just assume.
26:08We gotta find that car.
26:14Truck kid?
26:15Truck kid, at 8 o'clock this morning.
26:17Where at?
26:17At the, uh, MLK in 27th.
26:19License plate cameras captured the avalanche on Tulsa's north side, four hours ago.
26:25Okay, let's go up north, start looking.
26:27Detectives and the Warrens' squad head out to try to find the avalanche and Nathan Lucky.
26:34What I love about this work is that, all of a sudden, all of the work that you put comes
26:38together in one moment,
26:40and you've got it figured out, and man, there's nothing that beats that rush.
26:5213th and Utica Eastbound.
26:56All right, I got it.
26:57It's going to be a dark blue Chevy avalanche.
27:00Simple.
27:01Yeah, he's moving pretty quick.
27:05That's him right there.
27:07Rusty, he's right behind me.
27:09He's going eastbound.
27:10I'm directly in front of him.
27:13All right, I got him.
27:34Good work.
27:38It's definitely our car.
27:40They'll be transporting him down and work Mark's magic and see if he can get what we need.
27:54He's being nice.
27:55He's cordial.
27:56Kind of joking, cutting up a little bit.
27:58When I interviewed him, he confessed to my robbery, but that's when he was 18, 19 years old.
28:03Detective Jeff Gatwood arrested Nathan for a robbery 17 years ago.
28:09I think he'll talk.
28:10You never know these guys.
28:12But if he knows how much he's got to lose in this, he probably ought to.
28:22Hey, how's it going, man?
28:23How you doing?
28:24How you doing?
28:25How you doing?
28:25How you doing?
28:25Nathan, I'm Detective Kennedy.
28:27This is Detective Warren.
28:30Uh, man.
28:34I've got an investigation, Warren, that I'd like to talk to you about, okay?
28:40It would have been Friday night into Saturday morning.
28:44So kind of run me through what you were doing Friday night and where you were at.
28:50Cruising with my car group.
28:51Car group?
28:52Yeah, I'm with a truck group.
28:54Okay.
28:54It was BTR, Big Truck Riders.
28:57We'd just cruise around, jump from spot to spot, meet up with other car groups and stuff
29:01like that.
29:02Yeah?
29:02Yeah.
29:02So you were driving your avalanche that night?
29:05And so when you guys go cruising around town, do you stay in your car by yourself?
29:09Yeah.
29:11Okay.
29:12After you got done cruising, where did you go?
29:15Home.
29:16About what time you got home?
29:18About 1230.
29:19And nobody was with you?
29:20No.
29:23Okay.
29:26Do you know a guy by the name of D'Anthony Smith?
29:31Yeah.
29:31How do you know him?
29:33We met in prison.
29:34The first time in prison.
29:35Did you?
29:35Did you?
29:35Yeah.
29:36When was the last time you saw him?
29:40I don't know.
29:41About a couple of days ago.
29:44Well, here's the deal.
29:45Here's, I'm just going to put it out to you.
29:47Because we're kind of just beating around the bush a little bit.
29:49Okay?
29:49I'm working a case where a guy got killed over there in the Bristol Park Apartments.
29:56D'Anthony.
29:57He's a suspect in this murder.
30:02Okay?
30:04And here's the thing that you need to really digest really hard.
30:08Okay?
30:08Because you just told me you had your truck and you're with your truck the whole night.
30:12Your truck is on video going in to the Bristol Park Apartments.
30:18Yes.
30:19It is.
30:23I got both of you in video walking up to the apartment.
30:28Looks to me like some happened that you didn't think was going to happen and freaked out.
30:35That's what it looks like to me.
30:37So, you tell me how you want to play this.
30:54I'm going to give you a chance to tell me the truth.
30:57And that's up to you.
30:59Yeah.
31:00I'm the guy who's a lawyer.
31:05He'll be arrested, okay?
31:07Yeah.
31:08I'm going to have a lawyer, man.
31:09I'll just...
31:12You okay?
31:21Well, what do you guys think?
31:23I mean, does anybody here think they don't have enough problem to cause arrest him?
31:26Yeah.
31:27If he says he's with his truck all night, that's the suspect's truck.
31:30But you don't have D'Anthony.
31:33D'Anthony's going to be harder to arrest than him.
31:35Oh, I agree.
31:36Let him sit there and think for a minute.
31:38Let him percolate a little bit.
31:40There's always a worry that D'Anthony finds out and we're talking to him and he takes off.
31:45Yeah.
31:46And we could lose him or we could lose whatever you think you may get out of his apartment, so...
31:50We might ought to hit D'Anthony's apartment tonight.
31:53Yeah.
31:54Let me get the warrant going.
31:56While Kennedy types up a search warrant for D'Anthony's apartment...
32:00Max and Jeremy are on it.
32:02Detectives Ryden and Stiles will keep watch there in case he tries to flee.
32:14A half hour later...
32:16Hey.
32:17Hey.
32:18The guy wants to call.
32:20He says he wants to talk now.
32:22So we're gonna go talk to him.
32:23And we're gonna see what he has to say.
32:29All right.
32:30Here we are.
32:35Hi, Nathan.
32:37Nathan, I was told that you wanted to talk to us.
32:41Is that correct?
32:43Yeah.
32:43So were you with your BTR group?
32:46Yeah.
32:46Okay.
32:47And you were by yourself the whole night?
32:50No.
32:52Okay.
32:53Who was with you?
32:55D'Anthony.
32:57You remember about what time D'Anthony got up there?
33:00About 11.
33:01And did you guys start driving at that point?
33:03Driving around?
33:04Yeah, I started cruising with my truck group.
33:05Okay.
33:06He asked me,
33:06can you stop me over here by my friend's house?
33:09I'm gonna talk to him.
33:10Sure.
33:11Nathan says he drove D'Anthony to his friend's apartment.
33:15And he knocked on the door?
33:16Yeah, I stepped right there.
33:17I'm about to step.
33:18Okay.
33:19What happened when he knocked on the door?
33:22.
33:25You got to be a little detailed, man.
33:27I heard, hello?
33:28Hello?
33:29So did the door open?
33:30I don't know.
33:30I was looking out.
33:32And then all of a sudden, I heard, who is it?
33:33And as I was getting ready to turn around on.
33:35Boom.
33:37How many shots did you hear?
33:38That first one, I took off.
33:40It was like two.
33:42Okay.
33:42So you took off.
33:44Yeah.
33:45And I'm assuming that you and D'Anthony ran back to your truck.
33:48Yes.
33:49Okay.
33:49What kind of gun did he have?
33:51I don't know.
33:51I didn't even know he had a gun.
33:52I don't be around guns.
33:54Did you see the gun after the shooting?
33:56No.
33:57What'd he tell you about it?
33:59Yeah, I asked him what happened.
34:00He was like, man, that dude.
34:03Have you talked to D'Anthony since this happened?
34:07Yeah.
34:08I told him.
34:09He my life.
34:11Okay.
34:12Because literally, I own my own business.
34:15Got kids.
34:17I'm sitting here fighting with life for something I didn't do.
34:21And I just got out of prison.
34:22You know what I'm saying?
34:23Yeah.
34:26I done had so many mental breakdowns the past couple days.
34:28It's crazy.
34:30I know I'm going to jail.
34:32Yes, you're going to have to go to jail today.
34:34I'm not going to lie to you.
34:36I appreciate you.
34:38I know you're like between a rock and a hard place.
34:40And that probably really sucked.
34:43All right?
34:44All right.
34:44All right, man.
34:55Minutes later.
34:56He's in custody.
34:58He's in custody.
34:59He's in custody.
34:59D'Anthony is?
35:00Yeah.
35:01Max and Jeremy were doing surveillance.
35:03D'Anthony came out and left his Dodge adventure.
35:06And they got him stopped and got him in custody.
35:09He's going to come down.
35:10We have a warrant to search his apartment.
35:1415 minutes later.
35:19We've got D'Anthony down here.
35:21We're going to try to interview him.
35:22See if he wants to give his side a story and go from there.
35:26So we'll see.
35:28All right, you ready?
35:29Yeah.
35:32D'Anthony, I'm Detective Kennedy.
35:34This is Detective Gatwick.
35:36I want to take you back to Friday.
35:39Okay?
35:39You remember where you were at Friday?
35:42No, what time you talking about?
35:43Let's talk in the evening time.
35:45I went and seen my friend.
35:46I went and knocked on her door.
35:48You know?
35:50Yeah.
35:50See how she was doing?
35:51She came outside.
35:52We chopped it up.
35:54Her boyfriend came out.
35:55And he asked who I was, say, I'm her best friend.
35:57I've been knowing her for some years.
35:58And he got crazy.
36:02Did something happen between you and the boyfriend?
36:04No.
36:05Man, I don't even know his name.
36:06Yeah.
36:06Never seen him till that day.
36:09He was so aggressive.
36:11And I'm walking back.
36:12I'm like, look, man.
36:12That's your woman.
36:13And I said, I'm just her best friend.
36:15I said, well, it ain't that serious.
36:16I don't know why you're so sensitive.
36:18And I got back in my car.
36:20And then I left.
36:20And then I told my brother about it, Nate.
36:23D'Anthony says later that night, he met up with Nathan Lucky.
36:27And I was like, I'm going to go talk to her, man.
36:29And asked Nathan to drive him back to his friend's apartment.
36:32I was going there.
36:34Something around the corner.
36:35Pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop.
36:37He says as he approached her apartment, he heard gunshots ring out.
36:43So you go up to the door?
36:45I didn't make it to the door.
36:46You didn't make it to the door?
36:47I didn't make it to the door?
36:50Okay.
36:51Well, let me tell you something.
36:52So that complex that happened in, that complex got video.
36:56I see both of you walk up to the apartment where this happened at.
37:00And then gunshots rang off.
37:01And then both of you run away from the apartment.
37:05You better start talking and tell me what happened there.
37:07Because you're standing in there.
37:08You're in there.
37:18I never made it to knock on the door.
37:21Okay.
37:21Man, I didn't shoot nobody, man.
37:25Well, dude, you shot him or Nate shot him?
37:27What?
37:28So who are you telling me?
37:29I didn't shoot him.
37:29Well, then Nate shot him?
37:30You were standing there.
37:31I didn't shoot no.
37:33You were standing.
37:34Nate didn't have no beef with this dude.
37:36No, you did.
37:36I didn't have no beef with the dude.
37:38You did.
37:39For months.
37:39One thing happened.
37:40You went over earlier.
37:42Probably got embarrassed and upset because you're a man.
37:45He was talking smack to you.
37:46You came back with your buddy.
37:48And you were going to go over there and maybe square up on him.
37:50And then it went bad.
37:51I went over there to talk to this man.
37:54They never made it to talk to this man.
37:56Well, that makes no sense.
37:57And now this man is gone.
37:59I've heard a lot of bullshit stories.
38:00And this is such a bullshit story.
38:02It even stinks right now.
38:07And here's the thing.
38:08We're doing a search warrant on your apartment right now.
38:10Okay.
38:11Do you know any weapons or anything in there?
38:12Yeah.
38:13Aren't you a felon?
38:14Man, I had that gun for 10, 11 years.
38:16I take control of it.
38:17What kind of gun is it?
38:18It's a Glock 19.
38:20Nine millimeter?
38:20Mm-hmm.
38:23Where's it at in there?
38:25It's in the room.
38:26It's in your bedroom?
38:27In the room in my dress in the Glock box.
38:30Okay.
38:31I was hoping you'd man up and tell us the truth.
38:34I mean, I did tell you.
38:35What?
38:35You told us everything except what you did.
38:38And now it's shoot the guy.
38:39I did not shoot this man.
38:41You did.
38:44All right.
38:45I'm bored with this.
38:47It's a shame you're letting Nate take the ride with you.
38:49There's no ride to take, man.
38:51Oh, yeah, there is.
38:51Trust me.
38:52You're going to find out.
38:53You're going to be down there in the Tulsa County Jail on first-degree murder charges.
38:56That's crazy, man.
38:57Yeah.
38:58I didn't do nothing, man.
38:59Well, yeah, you did.
39:00But that's fine.
39:07He's smart enough to know that we've been doing our homework and he put it all out there
39:10to put himself there.
39:12He's like, hey, yeah, I heard gunshots.
39:14I think that's about as close as you get.
39:16I do, too.
39:20Everybody in this unit, everybody was involved in this case, whether we were looking at video,
39:26tracking down the vehicle, whatever they could do, everybody was helping.
39:30This group of guys, they don't quit.
39:32These dogs will hunt.
39:34This was a total team effort and it paid off.
39:38All right.
39:39I think this was over a ego being disrespected.
39:44And he was going to show John Tavius that, hey, you're not going to talk down to me like that.
39:49He was going to go get retribution and he killed the guy.
39:52D'Anthony is in his 40s now and you would think somebody would grow up a little bit.
39:58This is stupid.
39:59I think it's a tragedy that a mother has lost her son when it could have been avoided by just
40:05not going back over there and avoiding the situation.
40:29It's totally different for you.
40:29The piano of Trudy, the piano of Trudy, the player of Trudy, who wasCall us from theuv empez subscribers.
40:33The piano of Trudy, the player of Trudy is not being blown away.
40:48One year after John Tavius was shot and killed.
40:51We're just here to remember him in the good way, the good time.
40:56His friends and family gather to celebrate what would have been his 28th birthday.
41:01I may be 28 years old tomorrow.
41:04If Lord gives me my health and strength, I'm going to be in the courtroom every day.
41:08And if I leave here tomorrow, my kids are going to pick up where I left off.
41:12And make sure that they get justice for my baby.
41:15We want to look these cowards in their face and let them know what they have done to us.
41:20How would they feel if it was someone that they love?
41:23He didn't deserve it.
41:26They took away a good person before he even really got into his prime.
41:31He always had a smile on his face. He's going to be the life of the party.
41:35You're going to feel his presence.
41:37He had a good heart.
41:38I donated his heart because he had a good heart.
41:42So we shared that part of it.
41:44To actually be able to save somebody's life and knowing he's living through them, you know, that's an amazing feeling.
41:52I'm going to go outside and do the balloon relief for my little brother.
42:00Y'all ready? Let's go.
42:10Happy birthday, JP!
42:14Happy birthday, JP!
