Set within a classic 1930s Vecchia Milano building, this compact Milan apartment has been reimagined by architect Andrea Giovanni Rossi and the team at Atelierzero. Shaped by an irregular plan, the home was transformed with minimal structural change, using colour, texture, and materiality to define a sequence of connected micro-spaces. The original living room and bedroom remain in place, while storage is concentrated in a colour-drenched entrance and the kitchen relocated to a corridor niche. With a flip-down work surface and concealed detailing, it disappears when not in use, reading more like a sideboard than a kitchen. At the opposite end, the open plan living and dining area is wrapped in deep teal to create an intimate atmosphere, with a long custom bench along the window providing seating, storage, and dining support. The bathroom is divided into two zones, with a rich green and white glossy tiled shower connected to the home through a fluted glass partition.

00:01The building is a classic 1930s structure characteristic of what is commonly
00:07referred to as Vecchia Milano which is Old Milan. Today these buildings are
00:13highly sought after and increasingly appreciated for their architectural
00:17charm and historical value. The general brief was to create a home that reflected
00:26an urban sensibility a richness of materials and colors without ever
00:31feeling garish or overdone. I'm Andrea, an architect at Atelier Zero, a land-based
00:40architecture and interior design studio.
00:49The apartment is located between the Porta Venezia district and Milan central
00:55station. The area where the apartment is located is rich in layers and contrast.
01:03It's one of the most vibrant and urban parts of the city.
01:10The apartment had recently been renovated using rather poor quality materials with
01:17no overarching interior design concept. What struck us the most was the highly
01:25the interior design concept. We created a niche in the corridor to accommodate a linear
01:32kitchen. The bathroom was divided into two parts. The living room and the bedroom remained
01:38in the original positions.
01:46The entrance is a colored box. You step into an immersive space characterized by
01:53mosaic factory cement tiles and completed with a custom-made wardrobe. The wardrobe in the entrance
02:02has become the main storage space for clothes and shoes and the other household items.
02:11On the wall we added a couple of our Il Disco lamp, which is from our brand Dererum.
02:19The kitchen was moved to the corridor. The countertop can be hidden behind a shelf that flips down
02:27when not in use and it makes the tell-tale signs of the kitchen disappear and can be used
02:34like a corridor sideboard. The clients didn't want the kitchen to be a focal point. The central
02:43lower part is flanked on one side by the refrigerator column and on the other by a sliding door
02:50that leads to the bedroom. We added a LED strip light because when switched off it's virtually invisible
03:00reinforcing the idea of a hidden disappearing kitchen. The handles on our custom kitchen units
03:09are carved right into the door panels. Since the kitchen window sits in a recess, we decided
03:17to add a small custom storage unit underneath it to provide some extra super space to prep food
03:24and extend the workable area in the kitchen. The living room is at the other end of the apartment.
03:33The upper part of the room is painted in a teal tone to create an immersive feeling when you're sitting
03:41on the sofa or on the bench. The sofa is very large so it can become a bed by simply
03:49removing the pillows.
03:52In the corner of the living room we put a lamp by Ettore Sozzas. For the light switch we chose
04:01a design
04:01with large format buttons by PLH Italia. Along the window we added a low bench that serves multiple functions.
04:10It acts as a bench to support the dining table, is used as a surface for objects and the television.
04:19We covered it in a decorative laminate made by Abbott and we like the idea of having something with a
04:2770s radical design.
04:30The bench is used also as a seating for the table to save a space in the dining area.
04:36We custom designed the dining table. It is a metal structure with a smoked black glass top.
04:45And above the table we designed a custom made lamp, using the same red metal as the table.
04:53It felt natural to go with the parquet flooring, though instead of the traditional herringbone pattern we opted for square
05:01tiles.
05:02And above the entrance to the living room we also heat the air conditioner so it's less noticeable.
05:11We wanted the shower to feel like a hybrid space in continuity with the rest of the home.
05:17That's why we used a custom glass door to bring as much natural light as possible into the shower area.
05:25The tiles are glossy 10 by 10 cm by Ceramica Vogue and they help us give the shower area a
05:34strong identity.
05:40The bedroom is very minimalistic and serves only as a place for rest.
05:47A large niche frames the bed and we opted for an inverse color scheme compared to the living room.
05:53So a light tone above and a dark tone below.
05:58The double-leaf windows have wooden shutters that slide right into the wall cavity so it doesn't take up any
06:04extra space.
06:06The clients brought the bedside table from their previous home, they were designed in the late 60s.
06:16The bathroom has been divided into two parts.
06:20In the first area there are two niches.
06:24One used for the sink and the other for a washing machine and some storage.
06:30The bathroom fixtures are by Rack Ceramics and we chose this slim model to make the most of the limited
06:37space given the small size of the bathroom.
06:43Designing a small space is a truly rewarding challenge.
06:47The goal is not only to enhance its functionality and beauty but also to create an atmosphere that reflects design
06:55sensibility
06:56and the personality of those who will inhabit this space.
07:00In this way even the most compact layout can become a rich and layered narrative.
07:07City of the bathroom with joints as to make the most penetrative Only halfTV's bedroom rooms have created surface
07:20No place for those più用 glue like a synthetic floor,
07:23but we also have two full arel ni 통ovue little bit by the furniture and yet I became one of
07:24theprizy and tearful.
