00:00WGR. Let's go Buffalo chance in the TD Bank North garden. That's still what it's called by the way
00:12I've not really checked nor paid attention I just know I would like to just call it the garden
00:17because you know I'm 60 years old and I grew up with the Boston garden and this has had a
00:23few
00:23different corporate names that have incorporated garden into it I'm not sure what the name it is
00:28but anyway I know I read and I don't feel like I actually heard much I could see fans on
00:35the TV
00:36coverage I was watching the local the local feed the MSG feed with Dan and Rob just heard a bunch
00:41of
00:41those highlights man Dan is Dan is killing it like good I'm so happy for him man and you know
00:48and
00:48Rob too like to have them like Rob obviously has been doing this job longer than Dan has to be
00:55back
00:55in the playoffs must be great for them as broadcasters but opposing fans being heard
01:02and showing up in Boston is a pretty foreign concept to me I gotta say like it's normally just
01:09not a place that I would ever think you have an opportunity to take over and you know we didn't
01:16really hear much of that about Thursday night now it was Thursday night school night if you will
01:22for game three game four on a Sunday afternoon maybe a little more easily accommodatable travel
01:30available to you whatever it was just so cool to hear that yesterday was I love that this series
01:39is only four games old Sabres are up three to one good afternoon by the way everybody another beautiful
01:43day in Buffalo New York I'm the Bulldog Mike is out sick today and believe me when I tell you
01:50if
01:51he could talk he'd be here because these are not days you want to miss when you know we've been
01:57coming in here on Mondays in the spring you know after the draft and it's just like you know 40
02:02times
02:02and where does this guy fit and all this other stuff and we'll get our share of Bill's conversation
02:08about the draft in here in fact Sal Capaccio will lead off our trio of guests today at 4 p
02:14.m.
02:14so I certainly plan to spend my time some of my time today on what the Bills did over the
02:22weekend
02:23Friday into Saturday with the draft after basically punting on round one on Thursday with three trades
02:29down that got them entirely out of the first round but you know you know you do this gig these
02:36are days
02:36you want to be around and well as it turns out tomorrow is a day that is even more desirable
02:43to be
02:43around so Mike's resting his voice because he can barely talk today I don't know if he could have
02:47tried to suck it up and get through today but probably would have blown it out for tomorrow
02:51and if I'm you know if I'm prioritizing when I want my my bud with me I would say tomorrow
02:57at the arena
02:58we're gonna be live at the arena first time we've been at a Sabres game with the show since before
03:03the long cold dark of COVID hit uh back in 2020 so uh we're pumped about that to be back
03:10on the scene
03:11and see what that all looks like um so anyway Mike's not here so you got just me so what
03:17does
03:17that usually mean that usually means more time for you if you're into it 8030550 is the number
03:23and yeah I mean let's let's let's talk about the hockey team and let's talk about this series
03:28three one through four games so we just a week ago we were in here reacting to the drama of
03:37game one
03:37and what a rush it was to have this game that you you you would have felt good about the
03:44way they
03:44were playing in it this is game one now I'm talking about just quickly I don't want to dwell on
03:49this
03:49because well it was a week ago and we've got a great fun new game from yesterday to talk about
03:54um you know last Sunday game one you liked how the Sabres played but they were trailing you know
04:02they were trailing the almost the entire game and it was this this furious four minutes or so
04:07that got them the lead and ultimately they got that game home and parked safely and and took the
04:14series lead and like that's a certain kind of game and I think you know if if I had to
04:22choose
04:22everyone's different like what do you want out of it you know what's what's the biggest rush
04:27you know I would tell you that the the drama you know the uncertainty the chewing your fingernails
04:34down to the nubs uh game that ends up going your way is is the score to beat like that
04:42the rush of
04:44you know them finally you know scoring the two quick goals by Thompson to tie it and then taking the
04:50lead on that Samuelson play and then the empty net like oh my god what unbelievable right just the drama
04:56after the uncertainty and like the fear of a loss and all that that is to me a high score
05:02to beat
05:02I think second and they're they're very much they're not exactly opposites they both end with
05:07your team winning so you're going to be happy at the end a game like yesterday I think might be
05:13a
05:13certain kind of fans favorite kind of game and it definitely has its merits there's no question uh like
05:20a cruise control kind of game you know it's not quite 51 to 3 but like it's pretty close to
05:28that
05:28I mean it took them five minutes to get on the scoreboard and then in a few minutes after that
05:34it was three to nothing and you felt pretty good and then before the period ended it was four to
05:38nothing and the only seriously the only moment of I don't even want to say uncertainty um because I
05:50think that that's almost too strong the the only moment of of like doubt or oh no don't let this
05:57happen for me would have come at the end of the first period um just and it doesn't mean anything
06:05it
06:05could it could have meant nothing it didn't happen but like it's for nothing like okay just
06:12close out this period for nothing I don't need Boston getting some life out of a goal here they are
06:17they are DOA in this game so don't give them something to take into the locker room and think
06:24they can build on or whatever kind of nonsense that you you would hear it's all cliche stuff but you
06:30know hockey players subscribe to that stuff I just did not want them going in there
06:35anything but demoralized like the only moment in the entire game once the Sabres got you know
06:42got the lead and built it to four nothing just like put your feet up there's like a minute or
06:46two at
06:47the end of the first period okay just don't give up a goal here and they didn't and then the
06:52second
06:52period kind of came and went and Boston beat them in shots but it really wasn't it was never in
07:00doubt
07:00right I mean I I guess you could say any time you know once the Sabres went through a whole
07:06second
07:06period without scoring and building on their four nothing lead that at any moment Boston could get
07:11that goal and now maybe they've got some life and if they get a second one you know whatever I
07:18was I
07:19wasn't real worried at all in the second period and a part of the reason why a big part of
07:23the reason
07:23is my favorite this game could have had maybe 10 contenders for your favorite moment um in the
07:31game yeah I've got a few that I I will talk about maybe even here in this first segment um
07:37my favorite
07:39moment of this game yesterday is some should I know specifically exactly what time of the second
07:45period this happened if it's my favorite moment from the game I'm sorry I didn't tape the game I watched
07:50it I know at some point in the second period I think maybe midpoint or even later there's a there's
07:56a shift where Byram is just standing there with the puck in his own end and I don't want to
08:04exaggerate
08:04it's not like it was minutes or anything but there's a few seconds like he he collects the puck and
08:09he's
08:09standing like in the face-off circle or around there to the right of Alex Lyon I know it's a
08:15second
08:15period because the Sabres are going left to right in the second period and Byram was standing in the in
08:19the
08:20left end they were defending that end so he's standing there in the circle like he comes out
08:25and he's sort of looking like he's gonna start a play but maybe everybody else is changing or
08:30whatever and he just sort of waits and he's waiting and no Bruins are coming and I said out loud
08:37just kill the clock what I just stand stand there as long as you want I don't know what are
08:43the Bruins
08:44doing Rob I think even said in this moment because I think I probably had a lot of company in
08:49this
08:49not that it would be your favorite moment but you probably noticed it too if you're paying attention
08:53to Dan and Rob like I am Rob even said they're losing 4-0 what are you doing they're just
09:00all
09:00they're just hanging out in the neutral zone like it's a like it's a one goal game or like they're
09:04protecting a lead hey Bruins it's 4-0 you're about to go down 3-1 in the series you might
09:11want to
09:12consider a 4-check uh you're just letting Bowen Byram hang out in his own end like watching the
09:17game go by and and I thought that was indicative of a team that had completely pitched it for the
09:26day
09:26and of a coach or at least a philosophy a coaching staff that couldn't pivot to another kind of game
09:37when the scoreboard absolutely dictated they looked like they were still trying to play the game
09:42that they had played successfully in game two and somewhat successfully you know I mean they didn't
09:48get killed in game three the Bruins it was a very competitive game and you know close game tight game
09:55playoff game this game they're down 4-0 and they're all just hanging out trying to take away
10:02space in the neutral zone and I'm like okay Marco Sturm like good job uh you might consider a pivot
10:13here and that that's the moment where like this this game is over they're not even trying to do
10:19what a team trailing by four fighting it's not quite fighting for your playoff life I mean 3-1 is
10:26dire but they're not you know they're not dead if they lose this game yesterday you could be thinking
10:32but still I just thought the lack of urgency from the Bruins in that moment that that became my my
10:39favorite moment of the game because I thought it was so emblematic of how futile the Bruins felt
10:46battling at this point really was that that was absolutely just okay look we got we're obligated to
10:54be out here for the next whatever 30 minutes or so if it was around midway through the period forgive
11:01me
11:01again I don't remember five minutes in 10 15 whatever I just know it was the second period
11:05and it was for nothing and the Bruins just were not at all trying to do anything to change the
11:12course
11:12of the game I I thought that was really really telling um I can't know whether Marco Sturm had
11:20given them different instructions going out there for the second period down four to nothing I would
11:25expect that he would but I don't know maybe he didn't or maybe they just didn't feel like doing it
11:30well they're just hanging out playing neutral zone hockey in a game that's for nothing and I just
11:35thought it was was beautiful it was such a quit it was such a quit by the Bruins and to
11:41get that in
11:42a playoff game I have not gone through all the history um playoffs with the Bruins um I mean I
11:51know I
11:51know that they nine times and the Sabres have won three it's not like a sterling record there's probably
11:58lopsided scores in there somewhere but I don't I it feels like a very foreign concept to me to go
12:07in
12:08to Boston Garden and just wreck them in a playoff game it was very reminiscent of those games that
12:17we've talked so much about in 2006 against the Flyers like the the games that ostensibly
12:25destroyed the Flyers front office and coaching staff it took until October the following year
12:29but eventually everybody got fired when the Sabres did to them early in the regular season
12:34in 06-07 what they had done to them in the spring of 06 which is blow them out and
12:40make them look like
12:40they don't even belong in the NHL circa 2006-2007 um that's what like it ate ate nothing in 2001
12:50I think
12:50we just passed the anniversary of that last week against the Flyers in an elimination game at home
12:56like you just absolutely annihilate them and that's what it wasn't 8-0 but it was 6-0 um you'd
13:04be bummed
13:04out they gave up the one goal I am just not built to expect them to curb stomp the Bruins
13:11in a playoff
13:13game especially on the road really for that matter anywhere I like this matchup I wanted this matchup
13:19um I thought the Sabres were clearly the better team and let yesterday afternoon I think for the
13:26first time really in the series it absolutely looked like that uh the Bruins were just wiped out
13:33by midway through the game and just going through the motions so really really cool like and that that
13:40is a that it's a circle all the way back to where I started here it's excuse me kind of
13:48the opposite
13:50somewhat the opposite of what you got in game one which was right down to the wire almost and you're
13:56losing for most of the game and the drama and the anxiety and all that yesterday was just
14:02oh you want another beer you want you want to go sit on the porch for a while what do
14:07you guys want
14:07I'm sitting back in my chair away from the microphone on purpose to make this point like
14:12that was yesterday you were just I don't know what do you want to do now I mean it was
14:17so easy
14:18easy for me to say wow do I ever look like a fat pig sitting back like that on the
14:23feed
14:23it's uh it's a little delayed uh sorry a little self-conscious moment there uh note to self don't do
14:29that again um just a cruise control game and those are also that might be my second favorite kind of
14:38game in a in a high drama playoff type atmosphere um you know you don't get to know the outcome
14:45while
14:46you're living through the dramatic come from behind game um but that is always so fulfilling when it when
14:54the check cash is right when you when you actually get the comeback and you've won it and you went
14:59through the uncertainty and the fear of the loss and all of that like that is extreme that's a high
15:05like that is a that's a drug yesterday was just more like uh you know it's very casual but again
15:13that
15:13has its merits like you know you're not you're not all wound up all afternoon you just sort of
15:19yeah this is cool I can't believe they're just rocking the Bruins like this just wrecking them
15:26in their own building so cool uh would love to hear your takes your experiences on on the game
15:33I did not go out to watch this game um I I just couldn't I just couldn't get there I
15:40just I thought
15:41I watched last Sunday's game in a bar and I just kind of wanted to be like home base uh
15:47but I'll bet I
15:48mean I heard what you know places were obviously packed um all up and down in my neighborhood in
15:53North Buffalo so I'm sure it was a scene almost anywhere you were watching this game but you want
16:00to hang out and talk about your experience watching this game yesterday and what you thought about it
16:04uh I'm here at 803 05 50 a very close contender to me for favorite moment of the game
16:15was Swayman's exit from the game which and and the reason I I think I would make this number one
16:21if I
16:22knew if I could have confirmed sorry I need to take a drink I don't need to blow out my
16:29voice with
16:29mic out already with no voice um there's one one Boston reporter that I saw assert that the way the
16:41the way Swayman left the game was him pulling himself because it did not happen right after
16:50the goal look look at the time the the times of every you know this if you're watching the game
16:55closely um it was close but they score that goal and then there's a tv timeout right afterward like
17:02maybe within 30 seconds or so of the I think it's the sixth goal and they go to a tv
17:09timeout and come
17:10back and Swayman's not in the net anymore and Korpisalo has gone in and this one one one Bruin
17:17account said I think Swayman just pulled himself he skated over the bench during the tv timeout
17:25and said something to Korpisalo and then Korpisalo started getting his gear on and came in so it was not
17:32it was not directly precipitated by the last goal like the coach didn't see the last goal go in and
17:38go
17:39oh that's it get Swayman out of there they kept going
17:45and then I think Swayman came over to the bench it's possible Sturm said something but this this
17:51account from in the building and that there weren't 10 versions of this only this one I've looked I
17:57tried to find it because I love the thought of a goalie himself going over going yeah I'm uh I'm
18:03done
18:03I don't care what this guy wants me to do I'm out you want to get get your gear on
18:07right and then you
18:09saw him barking at the bench on his way by I mean that's a that's a tough look he did
18:14not talk to the
18:14media last night I don't know if they have made players available yet today I would imagine uh they
18:21would have skated or had a meeting or something this morning because they'd be flying here for the
18:26game tomorrow so I don't know if there's been any update on that but I thought it was at least
18:31possible that Swayman pulled himself from the game which is again that's to the Sabres credit
18:36yeah I'm I'm out um yelling at his own guys leaving awesome so that was a pretty cool cool
18:44part of this um there is word that Zdorov and Arvidsson for Boston are questionable for tomorrow
18:51I don't know what happened to Zdorov other than him getting tossed from the game well I mean he got
18:57a
18:57five minute major and there wasn't five minutes left so he didn't get thrown out but effectively
19:01a major penalty for cross-checking Rasmus Dahlin across the arms across the arm he didn't get both
19:09arms that would be really hard um ended Zdorov's night and so I don't know what the story is there
19:17he's not getting suspended we know that he got the maximum five thousand dollar fine basically for
19:23trying to break Rasmus Dahlin's arm which he very easily could have done uh JT Miller of the Rangers
19:29did this to Thomas Shabbat late in the regular season uh it was a forearm I think I think Zdorov
19:34cross-checked Dahlin up on the in the bicep area is what it looked like but snapped his stick in
19:40half
19:40in the process and uh good job NHL um I imagine if Dahlin had suffered a broken arm we'd be
19:47really
19:47upset obviously and Zdorov probably would be suspended but because the action that he took
19:55which clearly was designed to injure Rasmus Dahlin didn't injure Rasmus Dahlin he gets a fine instead
20:02of a suspension I'm fine with it I hope he plays you know why because he sucks
20:09I want him on the ice I don't want him in the penalty box I don't want him suspended the
20:15only well
20:15the only caveat to that is what he actually did to Dahlin yesterday like I don't want him to hurt
20:20anyone so I guess in that way maybe it would be better if he just weren't around but keep him
20:27on the
20:27ice like I get his fit there I get what where his value is but mostly I think he is
20:35that entire
20:36decor aside from McAvoy is the reason last yesterday afternoon look like you almost said last night
20:43look like such a mismatch because their d just is not efficient at moving the puck and skating out
20:51of trouble they just aren't McAvoy is excellent he's elite Zdorov to me is kind of a clown show he's
20:58he's a big mean intimidating guy and that has its value that is his value but him on the ice
21:04is I think
21:06way better for you competitively so I I'm I'm in a way relieved it'll be a lot easier say once
21:14this
21:14series gets over with hopefully tomorrow night and I don't have to worry about him breaking somebody's
21:19arm or leg with some nonsense because he is he's a he's a dirtbag but he's a player I think
21:25you can
21:25exploit when when on the ice and so for that reason I I hope he plays uh tomorrow in game
21:32five
21:33what do you think man your favorite moment from yesterday swayman pulling himself byram just kind
21:39of hanging out in his own zone in the middle of the game like I guess you guys even trying
21:42to play
21:43anymore what are you what are we doing here uh super cool cruise control 3-1 series lead uh just
21:51love
21:51it uh your reactions to anything that I brought up or anything that I have missed here I mean it's
21:57only
21:57one segment I'm only 20 minutes in uh lots more to be said hopefully by you 803-0550 is the
22:05phone
22:05number and lines are wide open if you want to get in and talk about uh yesterday in the series
22:09so far
22:10if you're keeping up with Tampa and Montreal that series is tied 2-2 good keep playing Tampa and
22:17Montreal I'm not really sure who to root for there yet honestly I think it's it changes it's it's
22:26closer now than it was when the series began before the series began we like get Tampa out of
22:31the way now I'm not positive um Montreal looks pretty scary like that's a super close series all
22:38one goal game three of them overtime a late winner last night to avoid overtime for Tampa as they
22:44complete a comeback from 2-0 down to win 3-2 and even that series up I think I read
22:49just now we're
22:49waiting until Wednesday now again for the next game of that series uh must have building issues I don't
22:55know um so a little bit of a break for Tampa and Montreal again uh but I I hope that
23:02goes seven
23:03more than I want to say I want to see Montreal or Tampa come through I want them to just
23:11take every
23:13ounce of flesh off one another that they can before advancing to hopefully meet the Sabres provided they
23:20managed to uh win one of these three games with the 3-1 lead
