TOURIST SURPRISES DRIVER WITH FLIGHTS HOME TO SEE FAMILY AFTER TWO YEARS APART
WITH VID & PIX
By Divij Mayer
This is the emotional moment a chance encounter on a motorbike ride turned into a life-changing act of kindness.
Trang Nova from Melbourne, Australia, was visiting Bali when she booked a Grab bike for a routine afternoon of errands but ended up changing her driver’s life forever.
She said: “It started as a normal Saturday in Bali; I called a Grab bike to run errands for the afternoon. On the bike, I got talking to the driver, whose name is Dedy. He has a wife and three young children under the age of five.”
Dedy had left his family two years ago to work in Bali, just one month after the birth of his youngest child, who is now two.
He claims that flights home cost the same as one month of his salary, despite him working seven days a week for 12 to 16 hours a day.
She added: “Because of that, for two whole years, he had not gone back to see his family.”
When Trang asked him, “Wait, when will you go back to see your family then?” he replied, “I don’t know, only when I can afford flight tickets.”
Moved by his situation, Trang invited him to her villa.
The pair then sat down by the pool to eat where she showed him the laptop with Skyscanner open and told him the plan to get him flights home.
There were challenges along the way, as Dedy did not have a passport, routes were limited, and he was worried about missing work, but the pair worked through each obstacle.
But eventually she got tickets so the unsuspecting driver could get home to see his family and, in that moment, Dedy broke down, overwhelmed with emotion.
She explained: “After overcoming one hurdle after another, I was able to purchase return tickets so Dedy could see his family for the first time in two years.
“The smile and gratitude in his eyes made me realise this is real happiness, doing good for others.”
The story went viral online with viewers loving the emotional encounter.
One user commented: ‘This is what real kindness looks like.’
Another added: ‘You changed his life forever, this is beautiful.’

00:00Last week, we all became invested in Deddy, a Grab driver who hadn't seen his wife and three kids for
00:05two years.
00:05I'd bought him plane tickets and paid him a month's salary so he could go home and spend six weeks
00:10with them.
00:10In the three days before his flight, he said that he couldn't sleep because he was so excited,
00:15and before he left, we got to meet up one last time to chat about his plans for when he
00:18got back.
00:19It was a nervous time, since the intense rain and floods in Bali was making us wonder if the flight
00:25would be cancelled.
00:26Turns out it did get delayed, but luckily not by too much, so he could still get his connecting flight
00:31home.
00:32The next morning, he was off for his 22-hour journey, including two flights, one long layover, plus a six
00:38-hour bus ride.
00:40Then at 7am the following day, he finally got home.
00:43His kids were still asleep, so he texted me saying that it was time for him to rest as well.
00:48He said this was a very happy day.
00:51And this is the thing, being kind costs nothing.
00:54It's easy, and it feels so good, possibly even more for the giver than the receiver.
00:59My friends, every action we take has a consequence,
01:03and we get to decide the kind of consequences we want more of in our world.
01:07So let's make this world happier, one bit at a time.
