00:08everything changed in that moment
00:15but it still felt a really long way away
00:21it was barley that really brought terrorism home
00:26I was a meter away from that suicide bomber
00:29it hit me so hard that it sent me flying off my feet
00:32and all of a sudden that that sense of security that no matter how bad things are anywhere in
00:38the world was gone but we really had no idea that terror was about to hit us right in the
00:47middle
00:47of Sydney breaking news of the Sydney this morning where there are reports of an armed man holding
00:53hostages everybody watching those pictures could put themselves in that cafe I thought my god
01:01terrorists don't take hostages we will be dead he will kill us and it just shows how unprepared we
01:11were he's standing at the window with a bomb wrapped around him take the shot just take the shot
01:22when terrorists come they care about inflicting fear
01:29I think these things do change us this was completely unprecedented we just didn't have the systems to cope with

02:17when I think about Australia in 2001 I think about the birth of the new century
02:23it really was a time of excitement about the future I think we were still quite a innocent naive country
02:32in a lot of ways
02:34the big hit of the year was amazing by Alex Lloyd
02:42that song just was all about freedom and innocence and it just reminds me of a young carefree Australia
02:50yeah we were sort of beginning of the century the future was bright
02:592001 was a great time and work was good business was good we just finished the Olympics and
03:06you know as they always do they say this was the best Olympics ever
03:14Australia is a peaceful prosperous place that does feel tucked away from the problems of the rest of the world
03:37I remember 9-11 vividly because I was at a pub with a mate of mine
03:44and suddenly the TV went to live breaking news
03:59good evening a tragedy is unfolding in New York
04:02I had just started my very first job in media working for Nightline Channel 9
04:13and I had left work just before midnight I'd gone home and I think I just jumped into bed when
04:21the phone rang
04:23and they were calling everyone in
04:28the glass like blew out and threw me onto the sidewalk and I couldn't see for like 20 seconds
04:34and I don't even think at that point that it was clear that it was a terrorist attack
04:42we just knew it was big
04:49I remember waking up in the morning turning on the TV and seeing oh the today show started early
04:56and then they were talking about this attack on America this coordinated attack on a western country is something that
05:07we had never seen before the scale
05:15our prime minister as you know John Howard is presently in the United States he's been moved was several hours
05:21ago from his hotel in Washington to the more secure Australian Embassy in the American capital
05:29I was in Washington when the terrorist attacks occurred
05:35I just say how horrified I am at what I've just heard regarding what's happened in New York
05:43it was just one of those events that was transforming and you knew that the world would never be the
05:51same
05:56this is National 9 News
06:02good evening and welcome to this special one hour edition of National 9 News
06:06as the world tries to come to terms with the almost unbelievable events of the past 19 hours
06:15none of us left
06:17we slept under desks
06:19no one shouted it was like it was 24 hour coverage
06:24okay rolling up please introduce studio three roll record
06:27it was such an insane insane time
06:31just to see the newsroom go into overdrive like that
06:34all right
06:35do we know how it finishes or
06:3730 seconds
06:43when a news story happens a tragedy of this magnitude
06:48the newsroom is a crazy place and it is very easy to get something wrong
06:54you're in a position where you have to be at your sharpest you have to get it right
07:01I'm right I'm right I'm right
07:12good evening I'm Peter Overton welcome to this special edition of 60 Minutes
07:17let's go back now to my colleague Tara Brown who is in New York
07:20right now America is preparing to go to war
07:23and the war may come within weeks maybe even days
07:29then all of a sudden
07:30you know every newscast broadcast
07:34everybody on everybody's lips
07:36was terrorism
07:38who could be behind such a devastating act of terrorism
07:42it's a terrorist strike at the heart of the United States
07:47and then of course everything changed
07:49all Australians just became a bit frightened
07:52our innocence was taken in many ways
07:58everything changed in that moment
08:00but it still felt a really long way away
08:03it didn't it didn't impact us
08:05and I feel like you know
08:07little Australia down on the bottom there
08:10we felt safe and protected from whatever big bad things are happening in the world
08:16until Bali
08:31being in Bali is almost like a rite of passage for so many Australians
08:37we associate Bali with young Australians going
08:42it's often sometimes their first international trip
08:45it's where they go and let loose
08:47Australians go there and don't always behave particularly well
08:50like use it as a bit of a place where they just kind of get drunk
08:54and not in a very respectful way
08:56great surfing cheap seafood
08:58cheap beer
08:59cheap cocktails
09:01I first went to Bali in 1978 with a mate
09:04we're on a surfing trip
09:05we weren't very good but we certainly had a good time
09:11it was this tropical paradise
09:14while out in the streets was hustle and bustle
09:16inside the resort you could be anywhere in the world
09:19so I fell in love with the place like most Australians do
09:28we arrived at three o'clock that day
09:33and we arrived went to the room
09:36got bathers on and we were in the pool
09:38and it was my girlfriends that said
09:40righto so what are we going to do tonight
09:42and I was the party one out of the group
09:45so I would always instigate where we were going
09:47what time all the rest of it
09:49and this particular night I said
09:51no I don't think we should
09:52I think we'll just stay in
09:53they looked at me like what
09:55and I said it's our first night here
09:59we've got two weeks
10:00and they went yeah it's our first night here
10:01we're going out
10:05we had dinner at the hotel
10:07and then we wandered up the street
10:10to hit the first nightclub
10:11and that was Paddy's
10:16a friend of mine said
10:18how about we go to Sari Club
10:23and I said
10:23no I want to hear what the next song is
10:27and I don't know why I said that
10:28but I said I just want to hear what the next song is
10:31and with that the song started playing
10:33and it was probably five seconds into that song
10:38the suicide bomber let off the bomb
10:52I think it really was a shock to so many Australians
10:59the Bali bombing wasn't on home soil
11:02but it sure felt like it
11:03because Bali is a second home
11:06for so many Australians
11:08they just could not believe
11:10that this was perpetrated
11:11on holiday makers
11:14innocent people
11:21I remember a fireball
11:23coming straight towards me
11:25so it hit me
11:26and it hit me so hard
11:27that it sent me flying off my feet
11:35it was dark
11:36it was smoky
11:37the bar was still on fire
11:39but I couldn't get up off the floor
11:41so I just had to lay back down again
11:43and hope to God
11:44someone was going to find me
11:51I was carried out the front of the nightclub
11:53and I remember just seeing bodies lined up
11:57along the streets
12:00there were sirens
12:02there were car horns
12:05and it was absolute chaos
12:18good evening
12:19there is grief and great anxiety
12:21across Australia tonight
12:22an unknown number of our tourists
12:25among the dead and injured
12:26on the tourist island of Bali
12:28two bombs in two separate clubs
12:31killing at least 182 people
12:34we'd had 9-11
12:36a year before
12:37and as shocking
12:38and as terrible as that was
12:40it was Bali
12:42that really brought terrorism home
12:51we got on the first flight
12:53that we could
12:54the following day
12:55and flew up to Bali
12:57we made our way initially
12:58to the hospital
12:59because we thought
13:00that was the best place to go
13:01and when I got to the hospital
13:03it was absolute chaos
13:06the death toll is incomprehensible
13:09the scene at Dempahassar Hospital
13:11was indescribable
13:14barely copes at the best of times
13:16the scores of injured Australians
13:18the scene was pandemonium
13:22one person I went up to
13:23I said do you mind if I talk to you
13:25and he said yeah sure
13:26and his name was Peter Hughes
13:52I remember being in the newsroom
13:55watching their reports come in
13:56and Mark Burrows was talking to
13:59a victim from the attack
14:02and then almost straight away
14:04the phone started ringing
14:06and it was doctors and nurses
14:08calling in to say
14:10that man is not okay
14:11that man needs treatment
14:13or he's going to die
14:18I was with my wife
14:20and we just heard it on the news
14:22that there'd been a bombing
14:25as the day went on
14:26it kept getting worse and worse
14:29we found out that afternoon
14:30that we knew a few people
14:33that lost their lives as well
14:38I'm a hardened reporter
14:40but I can say that
14:41I would write my story
14:44back at the hotel
14:45I remember just sitting there
14:47just shedding a tear
14:48because the enormity
14:50of what the story you were telling
14:52really really got you
14:54and it was hard
14:55not to be affected
14:56by what people were coming
14:57and telling you
15:01many of the Australians here
15:03have been forced
15:04to suffer in silence
15:05dozens are suffering
15:07shocking burns
15:08and have been forced
15:09to wait in the stifling heat
15:11for their turn at evacuation
15:18I was evacuated
15:20on the first Hercules
15:22out of Bali
15:22but my condition slipped
15:24so they operated
15:25on the tarmac
15:26they took an artery
15:28out of my thigh
15:28and put it in my arm
15:29to help with blood flow
15:32and put me on the second
15:34we were all on stretches
15:35piled up
15:36it was the worst
15:38plane ride I've ever had
15:41it was a long trip
15:42back to Darwin
15:45I remember being woken up
15:46out of a coma
15:49I'd lost my right thigh
15:51that was completely blown off
15:53I had a hole in my lower back
15:55the size of an AFR
15:56football
15:57and burns
15:58across my shoulders
15:59and down my arms
16:01and then of course
16:02my arm
16:04which was later amputated
16:06two weeks later
16:12with more than 200 passengers
16:15expected to arrive in Sydney
16:16with them returned
16:18more heartbreaking tales
16:22I don't think there's any doubt
16:24it was a watershed moment
16:25for Australians
16:27Bali changed our perception
16:30of what terrorism was
16:32and it brought it home
16:33in such a shocking way
16:34the Bali bombings
16:36was really an eye opener
16:38for Australians
16:38because that was an Australian bar
16:40and they knew what they were doing
16:43and so Australia was attacked
16:45really
16:46there were so many Australians
16:54involved
16:55and all of a sudden
16:56that sense of security
16:58that no matter how bad things are
17:00anywhere in the world
17:01we were safe
17:02was gone
17:06when Bali happened
17:07I think it took
17:08all our innocence away
17:10because it was really
17:11in our own backyard
17:13and I think after that
17:15it did make people
17:16so much more cautious
17:19it stopped people
17:20going to Bali
17:21for a long time
17:21no one was going there
17:23because they were worried
17:24about their personal safety
17:27I've got the impression
17:28from speaking to a few people
17:30that we're not all that liked
17:32anymore over there
17:33as a group
17:34so I might rethink
17:36whether I go again
17:37yeah
17:41and I think that also
17:42changed the way
17:44Australians viewed
17:45their own personal safety
17:47when they travelled
17:48they were no longer
17:50innocents abroad
17:58it's only when you're on the ground
18:00can you fully appreciate
18:01just how powerful
18:02this blast was
18:04and that was something
18:05that was rammed home
18:05to the Prime Minister
18:06when he set foot here
18:08well horrific
18:09I just wonder
18:10how anybody survived
18:12and the people who did this
18:14wanted to inflict
18:15the maximum amount
18:16of injury
18:17chaos
18:17terror
18:19and devastation
18:21possible
18:22now it was quite
18:25traumatic
18:26for the country
18:28because people
18:30knew that
18:31this was the final evidence
18:33that
18:33we couldn't escape it
18:45the most important breakthrough
18:47yet in the Bali bombing
18:48Indonesian police
18:50have arrested the man
18:51who planned
18:51and coordinated the attack
18:54these were Islamist fanatics
18:57they were pretty indiscriminate
18:59as who they killed
19:00and it's just
19:01a reminder
19:02of the
19:04arbitrariness
19:05of not only life
19:06but of
19:07the threat of terrorism
19:12six years after staging
19:13the atrocities
19:14that left 202 people dead
19:16including 88 Australians
19:18the three Bali bombers
19:20were executed
19:31I never once
19:33thought about the terrorists
19:34being Muslims
19:37never ever did I think
19:38about them being Muslims
19:42they could have been Christian
19:43they could have been anything
19:44they could have been nothing
19:47religion isn't the terrorist
19:49it's the person
20:01after Bali we had 12 years
20:04of relative calm
20:05everything seemed to go
20:07back to normal
20:07and we really had no idea
20:10that terror was about to hit us
20:12right in the middle of Sydney
20:15and we were just
20:17completely unprepared
20:33it was almost Christmas
20:35and there's that mad rush
20:38everyone's in the city
20:40in Sydney
20:41getting presents
20:43wrapping up with work
20:44for the year
20:46and it's such a festive time
20:57everybody knew the Lindt cafe
20:59in Sydney
21:00everybody
21:01it felt like it'd been there
21:02at one stage or another
21:03it didn't make sense
21:05that this could happen
21:06in the heart of the city
21:07in such a benign place
21:09a coffee shop
21:10that sold hot chocolate
21:12it just didn't make sense
21:14those people walked into
21:16the Lindt cafe that day
21:17as they've probably done
21:19who knows how many times before
21:23and for a gunman to walk in
21:25and take them all hostage
21:29this is in Sydney
21:30in the days before Christmas
21:34and terror
21:36was in our town
21:40my mother and I
21:41went to the Lindt cafe
21:42that morning
21:43because
21:44simply mum had an appointment
21:46with a lawyer
21:46that happened to be
21:47in the same building
21:49in the tower
21:50behind the Lindt cafe
21:55I was paying
21:57for my breakfast
21:58and
21:59the young girl
22:00who was serving me
22:01was
22:01well she just
22:03was serving me
22:03with her mouth open
22:04and looked quite aghast
22:06thought what is wrong
22:07with this young girl
22:08but of course
22:09as I paid
22:09and turned around
22:10I could see then
22:12that the gunman
22:14was there
22:14and he was making
22:15his speech about
22:16Australia is under a threat
22:18and that we were
22:19going to be hostages
22:21I thought my god
22:24terrorists don't take
22:25hostages
22:27we will be dead
22:28he will kill us
22:36good morning
22:36we're going to take you
22:37to breaking news
22:38of the Sydney this morning
22:38where there are reports
22:40of an armed man
22:41holding hostages
22:43there is a major
22:44police operation unfolding
22:45this is happening
22:46right in the heart
22:46of Sydney
22:50this felt
22:52in some ways
22:53even scarier
22:55than Bali
22:57because
23:00through radicalisation
23:01of people
23:03through the internet
23:04this could happen
23:06anywhere at any time
23:09all it takes
23:10is one person
23:11with a gun
23:30I remember
23:31at 9.45am
23:33there was a
23:34police radio message
23:35to say
23:36of a hold up alarm
23:40radio
23:40I've got two female
23:41staff members
23:41with their hands
23:42up at the door
23:43both of them
23:44very visibly distressed
23:45I can't see any further
23:46around
23:48I grabbed another
23:49fellow officer
23:50and we jumped in the car
23:51and we raced up
23:52to the link cafe
23:56I was in the school hall
23:58and my daughter
24:00was about to receive
24:01the sports award
24:03and my phone rings
24:05in the middle
24:06of the hall
24:07and it wasn't on silent
24:08and then I get a message
24:09saying quick
24:10get to Martin Place
24:10there's a seed situation
24:13that was our first
24:15interaction
24:15with real terrorism
24:19I arrived
24:20in Elizabeth Street
24:21side of the link cafe
24:22with a couple
24:23of other officers
24:26we crept up
24:27to the
24:28the western side
24:29of the door
24:31now as a
24:32police negotiator
24:33as well
24:34I know what the rules
24:35of engagement were
24:36it's to contain
24:37the premises
24:37and negotiate
24:39I said it's best
24:40to push back out
24:42we had our firearms
24:43out of course
24:44we were
24:44you know
24:45concerned that
24:45he may have come
24:46out of that doorway
24:47and taken a shot
24:48at us
24:51my biggest regret
24:52was I didn't go in
25:01when we were in the cafe
25:03without a doubt
25:04I was convinced
25:06that the police
25:06would come and rescue us
25:08I had no doubt
25:09about that
25:09I assumed that
25:10any minute now
25:11the police would come
25:15I found out later
25:16at the inquest
25:17that there was
25:18no direct action plan
25:19to come and rescue us
25:23we were subject
25:24to an emergency action plan
25:26where someone had to die
25:27or be critically injured
25:29in 2014
25:31the policy was
25:32you don't storm
25:33a hostage situation
25:34unless somebody
25:35is hurt
25:36or killed
25:37and obviously
25:38that is unacceptable
25:39that is not how
25:40we do it now
25:42it's really tragic
25:43to look at
25:44what could have been
25:50the gunman
25:51the hostage taker
25:52the terrorist
25:53has certainly rattled
25:54a city
25:55and a nation
25:56and as this tense
25:57situation drags on
25:58we can only hope
25:59that's all he does
26:00as police push
26:01very hard
26:02for a peaceful resolution
26:06we had an operational
26:08police negotiators bus
26:10we'd used it
26:11and used it on jobs
26:13we've trained in it
26:14and it's a wonderful
26:15tool to have
26:16and it wasn't registered
26:18of all days
26:19that's when it was needed
26:20and it wasn't available
26:22that to me
26:23was bizarre
26:23I just simply
26:25don't know
26:25how it happened
26:26the best opportunity
26:28I had was to use
26:29the club next door
26:30it wasn't ideal
26:31it only had
26:32one line in
26:33it had no live feed
26:35in from the
26:36relay stations
26:37so I think
26:38the negotiators
26:39were behind
26:41and it was all
26:43very difficult
26:44this was a completely
26:46unprecedented situation
26:47for Australia
26:48and really
26:48we just didn't have
26:49the systems
26:50to cope with it
26:57the ebb and flow
26:58of the day
26:59it was not stationary
27:00we were
27:01it was constant
27:01there was constant
27:03movement and action
27:04as he was instructing us
27:06stand, sit, close your eyes
27:08get up at the window
27:10all that kind of thing
27:12and there's the vision
27:14I can see now
27:15on channel 9
27:17of these poor workers
27:18and maybe a worker
27:19and maybe a customer
27:19being compelled
27:20to hold that flag
27:21by the person
27:23holding them hostage
27:25you can see from the windows
27:27that there were people
27:29that held us human shields
27:31they were just
27:32clearly terrified
27:33and why not
27:34Manmonis had these demands
27:36you know
27:36he wanted an Islamic flag
27:38and he wanted to speak
27:39to the Prime Minister
27:40and he was claiming
27:42to have explosives
27:46this terror event
27:47was playing out
27:48in the heart of the city
27:50it was terrible
28:06what was different
28:07with the Link Cafe Siege
28:09to what we had seen
28:10with say
28:11Bali
28:12is it played out live
28:14on our television screens
28:16it's all about
28:17containment
28:18and negotiation
28:19as we speak
28:20that's why this
28:21negotiating process
28:22and the containment
28:23of the area
28:23is so important
28:24and that's why
28:24it's ongoing
28:26we'd sit and we'd watch
28:27and nothing had happened
28:28for hours
28:28but you couldn't walk away
28:31because you didn't know
28:32what was going to happen
28:33and what was coming
28:35Martin Place
28:36the upper end
28:37completely deserted
28:38with only a few police cars
28:40cutting off the streets
28:42and manning roadblocks
28:43but down here
28:44at Castle Ray Street
28:45several hundred people
28:46watching the police operation
28:49we had cameras
28:50looking inside the cafe
28:53everybody watching
28:54those pictures
28:54could put themselves
28:55in that cafe
28:56and that's what
28:58was terrifying about it
29:01the only thing
29:02you could really hear
29:03was police
29:04moving up and down
29:05the streets
29:05getting into position
29:10it was just played out
29:12in silence really
29:15and it was like that
29:16for hours
29:16it was just
29:17quite extraordinary
29:21everyone was fearing
29:22what was going to happen
29:24was he going to press
29:25the button
29:25and blow this place up
29:27was he going to
29:28shoot them all
29:29and what do
29:30the police do
29:34as it was getting later
29:36the tension in the room
29:37was rising
29:38because we'd been there
29:39a long time by then
29:40and so you know
29:42people were
29:43becoming restless
29:44more and more
29:46I was of the mind
29:48that the police
29:48must be going to come soon
29:50they must be waiting
29:51for the dark
29:55we could see
29:56the vision
29:57where this gunman
29:59could be seen
29:59through a window
30:01and I think
30:02we're all sitting
30:03at home
30:03wondering
30:04why isn't anyone
30:05taking them out
30:10he's got people
30:11innocent people
30:11he's standing
30:12at the window
30:13with a bomb
30:15wrapped around him
30:15and he's got a
30:16gun in his hand
30:20I think everybody
30:21would be saying
30:21the same thing
30:22take the shot
30:32there was the view
30:33of a lot of armchair
30:34experts
30:34that the police
30:36should have gone
30:36in there
30:36with guns blazing
30:38and they could have
30:39resolved it
30:40very very quickly
30:41it wasn't that easy
30:42I think the police
30:43did have a case
30:44to make there
30:45that it was a very
30:46very difficult
30:47situation
30:47they were trying
30:49to resolve it
30:49peacefully
30:52the New South Wales
30:54police will
30:54stick to this
30:55same tactic
30:56they know
30:56patience is
30:57their best virtue
30:59and for police
31:01to make a move
31:02to make a bold move
31:02and to go in
31:03would be a last resort
31:11clearly the situation
31:12inside that room
31:14and the police
31:14were aware of it
31:15was getting
31:15more tense
31:16by the minute
31:18those snipers
31:19we talk about
31:20well they were
31:21up in the building
31:21they were watching
31:23but they were
31:25fearful that
31:26there were
31:27explosives
31:28stacked to his body
31:36outside the 5 escaped
31:38hostages were revealing
31:39crucial information
31:41to police
31:41none of them
31:43could remember
31:44seeing wires
31:44coming out of the bag
31:46nor a detonation
31:47type device
31:48in Monis's hand
31:49the hostages
31:51were incredibly brave
31:52and incredibly observant
31:54and they came out
31:55and they told the police
31:56there is no bomb
31:58in a perfect world
31:59the police would have
32:01made sure the police
32:02snipers knew
32:03and maybe they could have
32:04taken him out
32:06I needed to justify
32:07taking a shot
32:09I didn't want to cause
32:12an explosion
32:12in that place
32:14that killed everyone
32:17at this stage
32:19we have a
32:19hostage taker
32:20who's
32:21armed with a firearm
32:23taken a number of people
32:24against their will
32:26and yet no one's been hurt
32:27at this stage
32:28so where's the right
32:30under the act
32:31to
32:32take someone's
32:33life
32:34by a sniper
32:37and you're weighing up
32:38shooting someone
32:39and if you think
32:40you're not justified
32:41then you're facing
32:42murder charges yourself
32:46there was some doubt
32:48in my mind
32:49as to whether
32:49I was justified
32:50in
32:51shooting him then
32:54so I didn't
33:09as each hour passes
33:11I guess
33:11it gets more
33:12delicate
33:13because people inside
33:14that cafe
33:15will be getting tired
33:16the government himself
33:17will be getting tired
33:18the negotiators
33:19though
33:20they are willing to go
33:21for as long as it takes
33:22the commissioner has
33:23guaranteed that this
33:24could go on ours
33:25if it needs to
33:26it will go on days
33:36as it was getting later
33:38he was in a state
33:40of absolute panic
33:41he was crazed
33:42by that time
33:43he decided
33:44I was going to stand
33:44on his right
33:45and then he called
33:46my mother
33:46and he stood her
33:48on his left side
33:50and then he called
33:51Tori
33:52and he says to Tori
33:53kneel down
33:54and put your hands
33:55on your head
33:57which of course
33:58you know
33:58that's
34:00that's execution
34:01position
34:07the gunman
34:08forces hostage
34:09Tori Johnson
34:10the manager
34:11of the Lindt cafe
34:12on his knees
34:14and I'm just
34:16and I'm just beyond
34:16panic
34:17there is no way
34:18to explain
34:19the adrenaline
34:20and the
34:23it just was like
34:24it was dripping
34:25off my hands
34:26off my
34:27it was just so intense
34:33Tori doesn't attempt
34:34to look for an opportunity
34:35to charge him
34:36or rush him
34:36or get the gun
34:37it was
34:40it was quite remarkable
34:44it was like
34:44he was resigned
34:46to his fate
34:49and that's when
34:50Tori died
34:59the police in the end
35:00could see that
35:00Tori was executed
35:01so all bets were off
35:03then
35:03and they had to go in
35:12and then all of a sudden
35:13all of a sudden
35:14the room changed
35:15it was like
35:16the atmosphere
35:16in the room changed
35:17it was like
35:18like the air
35:19had been sucked out
35:20or something weird
35:21like that had happened
35:22and then there was
35:22all of these lights
35:23and there were
35:24coloured lights
35:42the siege
35:43in the heart
35:43of Sydney
35:44has come to an end
35:45with terrified hostages
35:46running from a cafe
35:47in Martin Place
35:48but there are reports
35:50of deaths
35:50and injuries
35:52Louisa was wounded
35:53badly
35:57and she took
35:58a you know
35:59a fragment
35:59of a bullet
36:00from a policeman's gun
36:07two innocent lives
36:09Tori Johnson
36:09and Katrina Dawson
36:11killed
36:11along with the gunman
36:17and to hear
36:18that Katrina
36:19was a victim
36:20lost her life
36:21and then
36:21Tori Johnson
36:22but it was one
36:24of those
36:24relief
36:24that was all over
36:25but with terrible
36:27sadness
36:27that it
36:28got to that point
36:40we knew that
36:42the Sydneysiders
36:44would turn out
36:44and express
36:46solidarity
36:48with the people
36:49who died
36:49the people
36:50the hostages
36:50but it was
36:52way above
36:54what we'd
36:54ever imagined
36:56I just thought
36:57we'd come down
36:57and show everyone
36:59that we love them
37:00and that they'll
37:01always be in our
37:01thoughts
37:02shocking it was
37:04dreadful
37:04yeah words
37:06can't describe it
37:11I remember
37:12saying oh my god
37:13there could be
37:14race riots
37:14in the street
37:15I was terrified
37:16of that
37:17when I first
37:18saw the flowers
37:19it's almost like
37:20my fear
37:22of what was
37:23going to happen
37:23and was instantly
37:24relieved
37:25high above
37:26Martin Place
37:27the sea of grief
37:28has swelled
37:29to an ocean
37:31we've been watching
37:32it on the news
37:33all night
37:33and I suppose
37:34we just felt
37:35we wanted to
37:35pay some respects
37:36to these people
37:38I think it's a day
37:39that really defines
37:41a nation
37:42and it will
37:43change us forever
37:49you had
37:51groups from
37:52the Muslim
37:54society
37:54joining with
37:56citysiders
37:57everyone together
37:59that was
38:01such a powerful
38:02message
38:06what happened
38:07yesterday
38:07and last night
38:09is really
38:09shocking news
38:11it's not
38:11Australian
38:12I believe
38:14we as a nation
38:15on that day
38:17we lost
38:18our innocence
38:21after the
38:22Lindcafe siege
38:23terminated
38:23there was a lot
38:25of tension
38:26but there was
38:28a lot of support
38:29for the Muslims
38:30community
38:31in this country
38:32when they've
38:34started
38:34I'll ride
38:36with you
38:36a hashtag
38:39and four words
38:40brought a city
38:41together
38:41I'll ride
38:42with you
38:43Twitter users
38:44around the country
38:45offering to ride
38:46with Muslims
38:47feeling intimidated
38:49by anti-Islamic
38:50sentiment
38:57terrorism
38:58has changed
38:59us
38:59we saw
39:01the world
39:01change
39:01with 9-11
39:04and then
39:05it struck us
39:06in Bali
39:07on our doorstep
39:12and then
39:13it came
39:13home to us
39:16and each
39:17time
39:17it chipped
39:18away
39:19at the world
39:20that we thought
39:21we were living in
39:22and our sense
39:23of safety
39:24is not the same
39:26as it was
39:39what Bali
39:40and
39:41wind cafe
39:42did was to
39:43drive home
39:44that no country
39:45was immune
39:46it was a terrible
39:48thing to acknowledge
39:52in the wake
39:53of attacks
39:54Australians
39:55look to say
39:56how could this
39:56have been prevented
39:57what would have
39:59given us the tools
39:59to know this was coming
40:01or to deal
40:01with the aftermath
40:02and
40:04what Australians
40:05are really good at
40:06is after
40:07a massive tragedy
40:09or a terrorist attack
40:10we get all the information
40:12we go through it
40:14and we change policy
40:15and we make sure
40:17we've done everything
40:18to ensure
40:19that this will not
40:20happen again
40:21does that give up
40:22some of our freedoms
40:23it does need
40:25to be weighed up
40:27laws giving police
40:29unprecedented powers
40:30in the event
40:31of a terrorist attack
40:32have passed through
40:33the New South Wales
40:34Parliament
40:37NET's given a lot
40:38of police
40:38a lot of powers
40:39now
40:39to be able
40:40to investigate
40:41and eradicate
40:44terrorism offences
40:49we could hold people
40:51for a certain time
40:52people could be
40:53searched without
40:54without question
40:57and
40:58place a search
40:59without warrant
41:05before dawn
41:06counter-terrorism police
41:08hit 15 addresses
41:10across the city
41:11the targets
41:13allegedly presenting
41:14a clear
41:15and present danger
41:18what really
41:19has been
41:20significant
41:20is
41:21the erosion
41:22of individual
41:23rights
41:24in the suite
41:25of legislation
41:25that's been
41:26passed
41:31we stand out
41:32in the western world
41:33as having
41:34the most
41:34draconian
41:35rules
41:35in relation
41:36to counter-terrorism
41:39we gave
41:40authorities
41:41and police
41:42the power
41:42to be
41:44on top
41:45of these
41:45kind of plots
41:46before they
41:47happen
41:47but generally
41:48speaking
41:49an Australian
41:50will say
41:50if I'm not
41:51doing anything
41:51wrong
41:52I've got
41:52nothing to
41:52worry about
41:53so
41:54they do
41:55make us
41:55feel safer
42:05good evening
42:06ASIO's
42:07director-general
42:08says
42:08Australia
42:09has never
42:09faced as
42:10many threats
42:11as we do
42:11right now
42:12revealing
42:13five major
42:14terror plots
42:14have been
42:15foiled
42:15over the past
42:16year
42:17Mike Burgess
42:19was clear
42:19he said
42:19the rules
42:20of spying
42:20have changed
42:21in particular
42:22this is
42:22problems
42:23that are
42:23being compounded
42:24by artificial
42:25intelligence
42:25by a connected
42:26society
42:27and by social
42:28media
42:28algorithms
42:29that are
42:29targeting
42:30potentially
42:31vulnerable
42:31teenagers
42:32with potentially
42:33harmful
42:34material
42:35I think
42:36the internet
42:36has a lot
42:37to say
42:37about these
42:38kids
42:39maybe they don't
42:40have a lot
42:40of friends
42:41or whatever
42:42and they find
42:42someone online
42:44who they gel
42:44with
42:45and they
42:46form a
42:47relationship
42:48and the next
42:48minute they're
42:49being taught
42:49how to make
42:51bombs
42:51because you
42:51can look
42:52all that up
42:52and that's
42:54the scary
42:54part
42:55that
42:55have we
42:56not learnt
42:57how many
42:58terrorist attacks
42:59does it take
43:00before they
43:02improve that
43:04the panic
43:05erupted in seconds
43:06as shots
43:07crashed out
43:08at the police
43:09headquarters building
43:10in the centre
43:10of Parramatta
43:11we look at
43:13the murder
43:14of Curtis
43:14Cheng
43:14and Parramatta
43:15police headquarters
43:15by radicalised
43:17youth
43:17that's something
43:18we've got to
43:18keep an eye on
43:21it's a great
43:22recruiting ground
43:23but I also
43:24think of
43:25social media
43:26and the internet
43:26to be a place
43:27where
43:28on the other
43:29hand we can
43:29broadcast
43:31the antidote
43:32to all of that
43:32which is
43:33connection
43:34speaking up
43:35and against
43:35these kinds
43:36of things
43:36and this is
43:37going to be
43:37increasingly
43:37the place
43:38where
43:38these battles
43:40would be
43:40fought
43:40and won
43:41because
43:41that's the
43:42media
43:43that we're
43:43all gravitating
43:49towards
43:50terrorism
43:50has changed
43:51us
43:52I don't
43:53think
43:53we've
43:54gone back
43:54to the
43:54way we
43:55were before
43:58it's
43:58changed me
43:59it's changed
43:59the way
44:00I raise
44:00my children
44:01it's changed
44:01the way
44:02I go out
44:02in the world
44:03and we
44:03can't be
44:03certain
44:04of our
44:04safety
44:05anywhere
44:06I think
44:07these things
44:08do change
44:08us
44:09friends say
44:10to me
44:10when they
44:10walk into
44:11a big
44:11shopping
44:11centre
44:12they're
44:12always
44:12more alert
44:13I think
44:14I'm
44:14sometimes
44:15in myself
44:15I look
44:16around
44:16and I'm
44:17not being
44:17paranoid
44:18but I think
44:18you've
44:18got to be
44:19careful
44:23we are
44:24now in
44:24a kind
44:25of
44:25interconnected
44:25world
44:26terrorism
44:27exists
44:27on a
44:28global
44:28scale
44:28this is
44:29something
44:29that affects
44:30all of
44:30us
44:30now
44:30and
44:31it can
44:32sometimes
44:33disrupt
44:33the story
44:34we tell
44:35ourselves
44:35about
44:35what it
44:36is to
44:36be
44:36Australian
44:37which
44:37is
44:37basically
44:38to be
44:38safe
44:39protected
44:40lucky
44:41and that
44:42can be
44:42really
44:42destabilising
44:45the world
44:46is different
44:47now
44:47and it's
44:48sad that
44:49terrorism
44:50has played
44:51that role
44:51in changing
44:52it for the
44:53worse
44:59we just
45:00have to
45:00try and live
45:01our lives
45:01despite it
45:03you
45:13we
45:14we
45:14we
45:15we
45:15we
45:24we
45:25You
