00:00:01Previously on MyRenaoRules,
00:00:03it all began when one of Australia's youngest billionaires,
00:00:07Adrian Portelli,
00:00:08snapped up two rundown 70s brick relics in Bulleen, Melbourne.
00:00:14The plan?
00:00:15Transform these tired, forgotten homes
00:00:20into jaw-dropping luxury showstoppers
00:00:23and then give them away to two lucky Australian families.
00:00:28But he couldn't do it alone.
00:00:33Enter our four teams.
00:00:35Welcome to MyRenaoRules.
00:00:41Taking on House One.
00:00:42Oh, my God.
00:00:44Competitive parents of three, Nathan and Julia.
00:00:47Women don't necessarily like me
00:00:49because they get a little bit intimidated by me.
00:00:51Snapping at their heels,
00:00:53interior designer Emma and her mum, Michelle.
00:00:56Little Maltese terriers.
00:00:59At House Two,
00:01:01Greek best mates Frankie and Isaac.
00:01:03There's a big brand out there with a slogan,
00:01:05Just Do It.
00:01:06Ours would be, we'll work it out.
00:01:09And young parents,
00:01:11landscaper Mitch and interior designer Shaz.
00:01:15I think what makes us a good team
00:01:16is that we always just back each other.
00:01:18Yeah, 100%.
00:01:20With $100,000 in prize money up for grabs,
00:01:24they hit the ground running.
00:01:26Boom, brothers!
00:01:27For House Two, it was laugh at first sight.
00:01:32But it wasn't all fun and games.
00:01:35I'm very worried.
00:01:36Isaac's worried.
00:01:37The boys were quickly overwhelmed
00:01:39by their first bathroom reno.
00:01:41Our ceiling's out.
00:01:43Pull the whole ceiling out.
00:01:44Right now, we don't look like we have enough time
00:01:45to finish the bathroom.
00:01:47And Mitch and Shaz's battle with Mother Nature.
00:01:50With the insulation being wet,
00:01:51does it all have to come out and be replaced?
00:01:53Yep. Yep.
00:01:54Set back their big living room plans.
00:01:57Bloody Melbourne weather, eh, Jack?
00:02:00In House One, Nathan and Julia ditched beige and went bold.
00:02:04I'm not always right, but I'm never wrong.
00:02:08An early budget blowout unleashed the Maltese Terriers.
00:02:12$23,000.
00:02:15In Emma and Michelle.
00:02:16No-one in their right mind would ever want to do this.
00:02:20Lack of labour budget forced them to go DIY
00:02:22with a rust effect feature wall.
00:02:25They had no clue how to do.
00:02:28Look shit out.
00:02:30Tonight, the race to the finish hits overdrive.
00:02:35I need Windex.
00:02:36Chase, you better hurry up.
00:02:37As Adrian drops another epic surprise.
00:02:41I've decided to up the prize money.
00:02:45Then, the very first room reveals.
00:02:48This is super luxurious.
00:02:51I cannot believe it.
00:02:52The colour.
00:02:53I love it.
00:02:54But with so much at stake...
00:02:56Let's meet the people who will be scoring your rooms each week.
00:03:00The judges are playing hardball.
00:03:02It just was hideous.
00:03:15I've been working like a damn dog.
00:03:16Thank you, bro.
00:03:18I would wave to you, but my car is full of cushions.
00:03:20I cannot see you.
00:03:21My husband has to stop.
00:03:23My husband has to stop.
00:03:25My husband has to stop.
00:03:25My husband has to stop.
00:03:25My husband has to stop.
00:03:28Delirium and exhaustion have kicked in.
00:03:30Oh, my gosh.
00:03:32Apparently an hour and 45 minutes of sleep is not enough.
00:03:35As our four teams head towards a frantic final day of Renault.
00:03:40On sight...
00:03:45The tradies are already in full swing.
00:03:50Because in just four hours, the judges will cast their eyes over our contestants' rooms for the very first time.
00:03:57Bringing them one step closer to winning the $100,000.
00:04:05But after an exhausting night of painting...
00:04:09With Maltese Terriers' Emma and Michelle having taken on House One's bedroom and living room...
00:04:15Dying to see this wall.
00:04:17They're about to find out if their untested rust effect living room wall is rust or bust.
00:04:24Last night about 11, 11.30, I put on the activated solution on it.
00:04:29And we just stood back and thought it was going to be a big fireworks situation and did not happen
00:04:34at all.
00:04:35And we got nothing.
00:04:35I said, let's just leave it, let's just leave it.
00:04:39Just about to put on the rust solution.
00:04:42I don't know when it will activate and show rust, hopefully straight away.
00:04:47Alright, here he goes.
00:04:51Not seeing anything happening.
00:04:56Oh my God, I'm so nervous about our rust wall.
00:05:01Hopefully, it'll work.
00:05:03Because we're going to be at the bottom of the leaderboard for sure.
00:05:18I love it, I love it, I love it.
00:05:22Emma, it looks fantastic.
00:05:25Wow, look at the rust on the corner there.
00:05:27I love it. It looks good.
00:05:30I'm ecstatic with the living room feature wall.
00:05:32Yeah, me too. I absolutely am.
00:05:34A little bit of a sigh of relief.
00:05:36That's so good.
00:05:38Now we can start finishing the room, not killing each other and then also, you know, winning.
00:05:43I got the eye of the tiger.
00:05:46I have my own property development company called Project E.
00:05:49There'd be times where the builder would be like, no, we can't do it.
00:05:53You can, we're doing it. This is how it's been done.
00:05:56Maltese Terrier comes out.
00:05:57But we work hard.
00:06:00There's not friggin a million dollars in my bank, ever.
00:06:03I borrowed my little brother's car and it's a friggin 2001 Parola.
00:06:07Woo!
00:06:09This is an amazing opportunity and we're so thankful.
00:06:15Well, don't speak too soon, Michelle.
00:06:18Alright, let's go.
00:06:18What do you need? Another coat?
00:06:20Yeah, I was going to try and do one more coat on the ceiling.
00:06:22As competitive couple Nathan and Julia...
00:06:24Have you got to pay the door? Yes, I am.
00:06:26..are pulling out all stops in their kids' bedroom and bathroom.
00:06:29Watch it, red hair.
00:06:31What do you think of the stripes?
00:06:33Crisp.
00:06:34On paper it sounds like a lot, but now it's come together and I love it.
00:06:38I genuinely love this room. I reckon it's awesome.
00:06:40She went bold on the decision, on the planning.
00:06:43I got to come to site today and got to see what she'd done.
00:06:46What do you think of the maroon wall?
00:06:48It's very cool.
00:06:48But when Jules is in Renault mode, it is a force to be reckoned with.
00:06:54I'm so competitive in nature and the majority of the time I don't lose.
00:06:58Sometimes I can come across intimidating.
00:07:02I don't think anyone wins these competitions by playing it safe.
00:07:07We've got three girls.
00:07:08Having a family is expensive.
00:07:10If we're in need for something new in the house,
00:07:12we have no issues buying something second hand.
00:07:14It would be very nice to not have to look at the bank account.
00:07:16We're doing this for the girls.
00:07:18That's giving us the ability to dig deep to come out of this on top.
00:07:23Guys, two and a half hours.
00:07:25Two and a half hours to go.
00:07:26Two and a half hours.
00:07:27We're running it fine.
00:07:28We're running it tight.
00:07:30Come on.
00:07:31That's cool.
00:07:32This can go on the front lawn as well.
00:07:34There's a lot to do.
00:07:35It's insane.
00:07:36Insanity is also raining over at house two.
00:07:40Where's the floor mirror going?
00:07:41In here.
00:07:42This is the part where the best are.
00:07:44Wins.
00:07:45Where's the bed?
00:07:48Isaac.
00:07:49Yeah.
00:07:49You ready?
00:07:51This is the scary one.
00:07:53With Greek best mates, Cranky and Isaac,
00:07:56tackling the bedroom and bathroom.
00:07:59The bathroom has dominated their difficult week.
00:08:02Ah, the week.
00:08:03This week.
00:08:04This week.
00:08:05What week?
00:08:05Where are you going week?
00:08:06Where's the week, man?
00:08:07That wasn't a week.
00:08:07Where's the week gone?
00:08:08Where was it?
00:08:09I don't want to talk about the week.
00:08:10Who's the week?
00:08:10The curse.
00:08:11It wasn't a week, it was a curse.
00:08:13I never thought something like this would be so difficult.
00:08:16The tilers, the plumbers, the colour scheme.
00:08:19It was horrible.
00:08:21The curse kept coming, but we kept fighting back.
00:08:24Because that's who we are.
00:08:29I've had my business for about six years.
00:08:32Probably the first three years, I reckon, Isaac was with me.
00:08:34Working together side by side every day.
00:08:39Man, it's energy.
00:08:40We have a morning dance we do as well.
00:08:42Oh, yeah, we do.
00:08:43I'm swaying the street, my please.
00:08:45She just swayed.
00:08:46We've got random neighbours up the road.
00:08:48And it's like, why aren't these two guys just swaying in the street?
00:08:51It's a renovating.
00:08:52Best of luck to us.
00:08:55We don't want to lose.
00:08:57Me and my fiancé, we've looked around and we've seen the crisis of everything.
00:09:01And you're drowning.
00:09:03It's insane.
00:09:04And I really, really, really wish I could move out of home.
00:09:06So that, I mean, my fiancé can start our future and build a living.
00:09:12So just the last little hurdle.
00:09:14But that last little hurdle.
00:09:17Are we just taking in or not?
00:09:18Is a big one.
00:09:21That could finally make the boys crack.
00:09:24Shower screen.
00:09:24Jump out of the way, please.
00:09:26That's it.
00:09:27Down, boys.
00:09:28Down.
00:09:29Down, down.
00:09:30Yeah, yeah.
00:09:33Oh, my God.
00:09:35What was that noise?
00:09:37Oh, shit.
00:09:37What was that noise?
00:09:38Tick what?
00:09:40No.
00:09:43It hit the edge of the woods.
00:09:45Must have when we place it down.
00:09:48It's just actually.
00:09:51It's all right.
00:09:52We have to put that again into the wall.
00:09:53Okay.
00:09:56We're going to lift it and stand it there.
00:09:58Yep, yep.
00:09:59Be very gentle when we put it down.
00:10:01Isaac, what could go wrong?
00:10:02I saw one too big.
00:10:04Leave the cardboard down.
00:10:06Put some timbers over the top.
00:10:11Three, two, one.
00:10:12Up.
00:10:14I think I'm going to.
00:10:16I don't even know what I'm doing.
00:10:18Probably about that.
00:10:19Careful, careful.
00:10:20Careful.
00:10:21Go ahead, tilt, tilt, tilt.
00:10:23I'm going to chip on the timbers.
00:10:24Careful.
00:10:25You going down, gentle?
00:10:26Going down.
00:10:27Slowly.
00:10:28You down?
00:10:29Yep, I'm down.
00:10:30Go, slide, slide.
00:10:31Push.
00:10:33We're in.
00:10:35That's it?
00:10:35Yeah.
00:10:3690 days?
00:10:37Good job, boys.
00:10:39There's now only two hours until room reveals.
00:10:43Welcome to the mad show.
00:10:44So if I spray this quickly, then I can go back to the 6,000 other things that we have
00:10:50to
00:10:51do while it dries.
00:10:53Just washing maroon paint out of my hair.
00:10:59Nothing like some time pressure, hey?
00:11:00I'm so tired.
00:11:02I'm so tired.
00:11:03Oh, you're tired.
00:11:04Always time for this.
00:11:05Come on, Frank.
00:11:06Let's go.
00:11:10With time running out, house two, husband and wife, Mitch and Shaz, are feeling the pressure.
00:11:18Sounds very bad.
00:11:19As Mitch handles the grunt work.
00:11:21Amazing.
00:11:23Interior designer Shaz styles their kids room and multifunctional family room.
00:11:28So this one, centred between this and the end of this.
00:11:38I'm the ideas man.
00:11:40He is the doer.
00:11:43Those are our roles.
00:11:44Yep.
00:11:44I had picked out some colours that I thought would work really nicely.
00:11:48Being an interior designer definitely gives you an idea of the fundamentals of what makes
00:11:53a great space.
00:11:54Shaz's got a real good eye for that stuff.
00:11:56Sick tricks.
00:11:58And we definitely want to win this competition massively.
00:12:00Come on.
00:12:01Because in this economy, us and most people, I guess, are really struggling living week
00:12:07to week.
00:12:08We want to be able to be learning what we always promised him.
00:12:11Yeah.
00:12:12Go, bud.
00:12:13Just an amazing childhood.
00:12:14Yeah.
00:12:18Oh, yes.
00:12:19Mitch is going to be excited to watch the footy on this.
00:12:22But as the TV goes in, it's her ping pong table that has her worried.
00:12:29I thought at the start of the week that a ping pong table would be a great idea.
00:12:32And now I'm like, that was a crazy idea.
00:12:35Yeah, why did we do that?
00:12:35Why are we doing a ping pong table?
00:12:39Hour and a half, everyone.
00:12:43Hour and a half to go.
00:12:46Vibe is a rush.
00:12:48What a vibe.
00:12:50Rush vibe.
00:12:51Getting all the stuff in the room, number one.
00:12:53And then number two, having enough time to actually style and choose what we want to put in.
00:12:59That's my main concern.
00:13:00But with no time for any mistakes...
00:13:03You can just see a little spot here.
00:13:05..a new nightmare has cropped up with Emma and Michelle's untested rust wall,
00:13:09as builder Harley notices a distinct lack of skirting board,
00:13:14leaving the bottom of the wall looking unfinished.
00:13:17Yeah, we took it off.
00:13:19We had them on, it really closes off the fireplace, it shortens it.
00:13:23The only trouble is, it hasn't been set up that way.
00:13:25Obviously, we're always going to do a skirt on there.
00:13:27So, what have you done with them?
00:13:29I know you saw them.
00:13:29I try to throw them in the bin, but I can try and recycle them.
00:13:33Did you already throw them in the bin?
00:13:34Yeah, I was like, nah, just in case.
00:13:37So, Emma and Michelle running around trying to clean up
00:13:40when they don't know what they're cleaning up.
00:13:42It's a bit annoying.
00:13:43I did put all the rubbish out last night.
00:13:46Bloody hell.
00:13:47Sorry, guys.
00:13:48Jesus, Emma, we've already got them on our wrong side.
00:13:51To be honest, they often just get in the way.
00:13:56Sorry, doll.
00:13:57Is it really this much of a nuisance dolly?
00:13:59Yeah, I reckon you need them, yeah.
00:14:01Oh, here, is that there?
00:14:03No.
00:14:05We've not found the skirtings, so it's not great.
00:14:09Sorry, this was my bad.
00:14:11Let's not throw shit out until we know we don't need it, eh?
00:14:14We're just going to keep it as it is
00:14:16and hopefully we're not judged accordingly.
00:14:19Well, this is a great way to start the day, isn't it?
00:14:21We probably need to be wiser in our decision making.
00:14:27Could have gone a singlet today.
00:14:30The sweat is real.
00:14:33No.
00:14:33We need long ducks in the middle.
00:14:36No!
00:14:39Safety, ladder, bang.
00:14:41Alright, let's go.
00:14:42We've got about an hour to go, so we also need to clean up as well.
00:14:44So, keep doing what you're doing, boys,
00:14:46but we need to get in here very, very soon.
00:14:48And with the clock ticking,
00:14:51billionaire Adrian Portelli rolls in for the first inspection
00:14:54of his purchased homes.
00:14:58Hey!
00:14:58You made me up, you made me up, believer!
00:15:01I give away house.
00:15:04Believer!
00:15:04We bought two homes in Baleen,
00:15:07Relics, the 70s,
00:15:09to renovate them.
00:15:12We're going to transform these homes.
00:15:14They're going to be completely unrecognisable
00:15:16and then we're going to give them away.
00:15:20Good.
00:15:22What is going on?
00:15:24Can you believe this?
00:15:26What the hell?
00:15:28Where have our houses gone, Chris?
00:15:30Unbelievable, isn't it?
00:15:31How are ya?
00:15:32Good.
00:15:32You got a permit for that?
00:15:33They're pretty brutal.
00:15:34Nah.
00:15:35We make our own permits here.
00:15:37I'm surprised you did not drive straight past.
00:15:40It's completely changed.
00:15:41So, they've gone up.
00:15:42The interior's been gutted
00:15:43and, oh my God, they have been so busy.
00:15:46Read it, have a look.
00:15:47They don't know you're coming, by the way.
00:15:48Don't they?
00:15:49Alright.
00:15:49Well, let's surprise them.
00:15:52Oh, Nate, there's a coffee table outside.
00:15:54Wanna go get that?
00:15:56Shimmy, shimmy, shimmy.
00:15:58You guys are flat out.
00:15:59Hello.
00:15:59What the hell?
00:16:01You guys are on the final countdown,
00:16:02so we don't want to get in the way.
00:16:03Mate.
00:16:03Oh, wow.
00:16:04Does it look like the same house?
00:16:06Alright, Jules.
00:16:06How are we looking?
00:16:07Looking good.
00:16:08What else needs to be done?
00:16:09Well, it's just cleaning touches now.
00:16:11Can you straighten that down, my pommies?
00:16:13Oh, look at this.
00:16:15It doesn't even need a stick layer.
00:16:16Alright.
00:16:18He broke it.
00:16:18He broke it.
00:16:19He broke it.
00:16:20He broke it.
00:16:20He broke it.
00:16:20Please don't touch anything else.
00:16:23Um, you need to get moving.
00:16:24Get out then.
00:16:25Mum, just finish the bedroom hall.
00:16:29Emma, you look flat out.
00:16:31Yeah, we're not finished yet.
00:16:33Look at this wall.
00:16:34This is crazy.
00:16:36We did it last night at 3am.
00:16:37Did you actually?
00:16:38Yeah.
00:16:38Yeah.
00:16:39I hate to ruin the party.
00:16:40You know you have 40 minutes left.
00:16:41Yeah.
00:16:41No, we're good.
00:16:43We're great.
00:16:43We're gonna get it done.
00:16:44This is chaos, Chris.
00:16:46I'm not sure where the confidence is coming from around being ready in 40 minutes.
00:16:50Adrian, can you make Queen bed?
00:16:52No, he can't.
00:16:53Yes.
00:16:53I'm actually really good at this.
00:16:55Come on, come on, come on, come on, come on.
00:16:56I like hospital corners.
00:16:58Adrian, now's not the time to be making a bed.
00:17:01Shove it in.
00:17:02Let's go.
00:17:02No, no.
00:17:02You don't have time for hospital corners.
00:17:04Let's go.
00:17:05Alright, we're good.
00:17:06Let's get moving, guys.
00:17:07Come on.
00:17:0740 minutes.
00:17:08Did you say 40 minutes?
00:17:1040 minutes.
00:17:11Yup.
00:17:12Alright.
00:17:15While we leave house one to focus on their much needed finishing touches.
00:17:19I'm feeling a little stressed.
00:17:21Run to the pump.
00:17:22It's time to look if house two are any closer to the finish line.
00:17:26Alright, I can come through here.
00:17:28This house.
00:17:30Oh!
00:17:32That's not gonna tickle.
00:17:34Yeah.
00:17:34Hello.
00:17:36You're too tall, bloke.
00:17:38Hey.
00:17:39I love being short.
00:17:40Whoa.
00:17:41Hello?
00:17:41What are you doing?
00:17:42What's going on?
00:17:43How are you?
00:17:44How are you, mate?
00:17:45How are you?
00:17:46Wow.
00:17:47This is a big space.
00:17:48Still a bit of cleaning up to do here.
00:17:50There is some cleaning up to do.
00:17:51There is some cleaning up to do.
00:17:51There's some styling to do.
00:17:52We're running out of time.
00:17:54It's 30 minutes.
00:17:5530 minutes.
00:17:57Jase, you better hurry up.
00:17:59Okay.
00:17:59Good luck.
00:18:00Yeah, mate.
00:18:02Boys.
00:18:03Oh, no.
00:18:04Look who he is.
00:18:05How are we going?
00:18:06How are we?
00:18:07What's going on?
00:18:08Hey!
00:18:10How are you guys?
00:18:11Have you seen our toilet?
00:18:12Two and a half thousand dollar toilet.
00:18:14That toilet is the most expensive, smart toilet.
00:18:16Hurry up.
00:18:17Hurry up.
00:18:17I need cleaners.
00:18:18I need a couple of boys cleaning.
00:18:20I bet you wouldn't clean toilets, Chris.
00:18:23Look at this, mate.
00:18:24I'd do it.
00:18:25I'd get in there.
00:18:27I'm not sure that we really have time for this, so good luck, mate.
00:18:32Thanks, lads.
00:18:32Just hurry it up a little bit, huh?
00:18:34Appreciate the help.
00:18:35Thanks, guys.
00:18:37I'm going to watch this now.
00:18:38Watch your head.
00:18:39Emma!
00:18:39Look at the mess on the shelf.
00:18:41What do you need, doll?
00:18:41Top wing decks.
00:18:42Are we putting cushions on the bench?
00:18:44Stop asking me questions.
00:18:47Just...
00:18:48Switching.
00:18:49I don't think we have time for your finesse today, love.
00:18:52When they tell me to us down, I'll be ready, baby.
00:18:56Frank, how do you lift the blinds?
00:18:58Top drawer, there's a button.
00:19:00A book.
00:19:01A book.
00:19:01A book.
00:19:01A book.
00:19:01A book.
00:19:02Ten.
00:19:03Nine.
00:19:04Eight.
00:19:05Seven.
00:19:06Six.
00:19:07Five.
00:19:08Four.
00:19:09Three.
00:19:10Two.
00:19:10One.
00:19:11Done.
00:19:14Oh!
00:19:16Oh, you're so sweaty.
00:19:22And I'm so sweaty.
00:19:23Wow.
00:19:24Look at that.
00:19:25We did it.
00:19:27Oh.
00:19:28Wow.
00:19:29I'm so...
00:19:30Oh, my God.
00:19:32I've learnt a lot this week.
00:19:34We thought we were just coming to do the fluffy bits at the end.
00:19:37Yeah, the physical labour has been...
00:19:38The physical...
00:19:39We had no idea.
00:19:41Like, even painting.
00:19:42That's the hardest job in the world.
00:19:43I mean, my rust feature all worked.
00:19:46Really proud.
00:19:47Looks great.
00:19:48And I think the judges will say that.
00:19:51Oops.
00:19:51I can see a little bit of steak up there.
00:19:55Coming up...
00:19:57The stakes are already high.
00:19:59Oh, wow.
00:20:00What a week, hey?
00:20:01But Adrian Portelli has a surprise.
00:20:04I'm upping the ante.
00:20:06Yay!
00:20:07Oh, my God!
00:20:08There it is!
00:20:10And...
00:20:11Australia's most revered critics arrive.
00:20:14Led by design guru, Neil Whittaker.
00:20:17I can't believe that!
00:20:19Wow.
00:20:20Stand by for jaw-dropping reveals.
00:20:23Oh!
00:20:23Come in, guys!
00:20:25This is cool!
00:20:25This is so cool!
00:20:27I think you both like it.
00:20:29I really like it.
00:20:30Plus, face-to-face judgements.
00:20:33Quite frankly...
00:20:35We don't care.
00:20:49We're in Bulleen, Melbourne.
00:20:51And billionaire Adrian Portelli has asked the contestants to gather outside their houses
00:20:56for a surprise.
00:21:02Oh, wow.
00:21:03What a week, hey?
00:21:05Can you believe it?
00:21:06You've done it.
00:21:07No.
00:21:08Not at all.
00:21:09Not at all.
00:21:10It's all a dream.
00:21:11Feels like it, I'm sure.
00:21:12A nightmare.
00:21:13Not a nightmare.
00:21:13Good.
00:21:15So, Adrian, what did you think of the rooms?
00:21:18Absolutely incredible.
00:21:20I've come in here and I've been very, very impressed.
00:21:23Would not even picture that they've done this in a week.
00:21:26It is unbelievable what you guys have managed to do.
00:21:28And to think that two Australian families are going to win these homes.
00:21:32You should all be proud of yourselves.
00:21:34And I'm that impressed, I've brought with me a little gift.
00:21:39To go to the room that I thought was the best.
00:21:42To put into your renovation for next week.
00:21:47$10,000.
00:21:50No way.
00:21:53So, the team that have done the room that I thought was the best.
00:21:58And wins $10,000 to add to their renovation kitty is...
00:22:06Shaz and Nish.
00:22:09Well done, you two.
00:22:11Here you go, guys.
00:22:13Catch!
00:22:14Yay!
00:22:18I can't wait to see their rooms now.
00:22:20Congratulations.
00:22:22Now we know who to come to for a loan.
00:22:23The ping pong table in the living room.
00:22:26Who would have thought to put that in there?
00:22:27I absolutely love that.
00:22:29Hopefully the judges agree, but aside from the ping pong table,
00:22:32just the whole retro vibe of the room, the colours,
00:22:35everything meshed together very, very well.
00:22:36So, well done, guys, and well deserved.
00:22:39Excellent job, guys.
00:22:41Congratulations.
00:22:43Huge for the budget next week.
00:22:44That is a huge amount of money for us to have extra.
00:22:46Cash to be able to throw in to really zhuzh up the next room is awesome.
00:22:52Yeah.
00:22:54Mitch and Chaz, it's a competition, it's all design.
00:22:58You can't win everything, so yeah, it's their turn and we'll just, yeah,
00:23:01we'll wait out.
00:23:03Now, I should probably say that is not the only reason that Adrian is here today.
00:23:09I love where these houses are heading and I'm thinking,
00:23:13what can I do to make sure these houses are exceptional?
00:23:17While I'm impressed with these rooms, I want to know that you'll continue
00:23:21to put your blood, sweat and tears into these houses.
00:23:26100%.
00:23:26I need every detail to go from good to great.
00:23:31So I'm going to make it a bit more interesting.
00:23:33I'm upping the ante.
00:23:37Hell.
00:23:37I've decided to up the prize money to a quarter of a million dollars.
00:23:46There it is.
00:23:47Yeah.
00:23:47Oh my God.
00:23:50250.
00:23:51$1,000.
00:23:53Nothing screams more motivation than that amount of money.
00:23:56Yeah.
00:23:57250 baby.
00:23:58Yep.
00:23:59That's what's in his vocabulary right now.
00:24:01250.
00:24:02That's it.
00:24:03No other words.
00:24:04How's two for the win?
00:24:05You haven't won it yet.
00:24:07Well teams, a quarter of a million dollars, huh?
00:24:12You are now a lot closer than you were before.
00:24:16But now what might be the biggest test of all?
00:24:19The judges are about to arrive and to walk through your rooms.
00:24:24Perfect.
00:24:25Which means you guys need to get out of here.
00:24:27Go and have a good rest.
00:24:29Put your feet up.
00:24:30You've earned it.
00:24:30Well done.
00:24:32We'll see you tonight.
00:24:33See ya.
00:24:34Thanks.
00:24:35Well, nothing like a quarter of a million dollars to get the competition fired up.
00:24:39And who wins it?
00:24:41That will come down to our judges.
00:24:45Welcome Neil Whittaker.
00:24:47One of the country's most influential voices in design.
00:24:51With decades of experience shaping how Australians style their homes.
00:24:56From the pages of our leading design magazines.
00:24:59To screens across the country.
00:25:06I guess I've been in this industry for a very long time.
00:25:11I probably have seen it all.
00:25:14And then some.
00:25:16With all my years as a magazine editor and the years I've spent in television.
00:25:21What I love doing most is helping people find their style in terms of personality and innovation.
00:25:28Because these contestants can do whatever they want.
00:25:31But what remains to be seen is if they will.
00:25:39Julia Green.
00:25:41Interior stylist, author and founder of her own design studio.
00:25:46For 15 years she's been creating beautiful homes and inspiring spaces.
00:25:54When I walk into a room that's well designed.
00:25:57I literally start to feel the excitement rise in my chest and my heart beats faster.
00:26:03And I just want to do a happy dance.
00:26:06It is so good when you can connect with the story that a home is telling.
00:26:12My best advice for contestants would be to really think about what their own style is.
00:26:17We're all about embracing individuality, originality.
00:26:21Go bold. Go hard.
00:26:25And viewed.com.au's property expert, Simon Cohen.
00:26:30Founder and CEO of Australia's largest buyers agency.
00:26:34With access to the most luxurious properties money can buy.
00:26:39I've spent all day, every day, in Australia's best homes.
00:26:44From the most high profile, successful people in the country, I know property.
00:26:50If I love something, you're going to know it.
00:26:52If I hate something, you're going to know it.
00:26:53And if people are scared of that, then they should be afraid and nervous.
00:27:00I can't believe it.
00:27:01They've gone up already.
00:27:02Yeah.
00:27:02I can't believe that.
00:27:04Wow.
00:27:05That's incredible.
00:27:05I cannot get over how there were these two little-
00:27:09Yes.
00:27:09Shacks.
00:27:10Yes.
00:27:10I know.
00:27:10And now they're these monstrous homes.
00:27:13That is just crazy that that has happened so quickly.
00:27:16We need to get in there and see.
00:27:17Well, I cannot wait to see what's inside.
00:27:19Fancy.
00:27:19Let's go.
00:27:21Wow.
00:27:23The first team up for inspection is our Maltese Terriers, Emma and Michelle.
00:27:30This week, they tackled the bedroom and living room.
00:27:34I think we're just going modern.
00:27:36Honestly, like, I want it to really elevate it now.
00:27:40Their strategy was simple.
00:27:42Go Lux!
00:27:44Hi.
00:27:44OK, so, do we want impact or wow factor?
00:27:47Yeah.
00:27:47Well, it's just more time and more labour.
00:27:49I don't mind that.
00:27:51I'm sorry.
00:27:51Yeah.
00:27:52It's a living room.
00:27:52But their champagne and caviar tastes quickly got a reality check.
00:27:57Brace yourself.
00:27:58Oh, God.
00:27:59Run your eyes over that.
00:28:01$23,000.
00:28:03We're just going to have to do a different look.
00:28:04A budget blower.
00:28:06When you say it can happen, please don't say that if you're not going to go through with
00:28:10that.
00:28:10Force them to get on the tools.
00:28:12OK, let's talk about this rust effect.
00:28:14If we keep getting asked questions, we are not going to get this done.
00:28:18I'm deadly serious.
00:28:19And their DIY rust feature wall.
00:28:22So heavy!
00:28:23Push them to the brink.
00:28:24No one in their right mind would ever want to do this.
00:28:27What?
00:28:28I normally pay people to do this shit.
00:28:30But will the painting pain pay off?
00:28:34Interesting.
00:28:35Oh!
00:28:36Oh!
00:28:38Do you want the house store?
00:28:40I could take you to the first, second, third floor.
00:28:44What?
00:28:45It's like a time walk.
00:28:47Are we really in the same room?
00:28:49I just want you to come inside.
00:28:53We've gone from Flintstones to 2025.
00:28:58At the speed of light.
00:28:59Yes.
00:29:02This is super luxury.
00:29:04I cannot believe it.
00:29:06Sorry.
00:29:07I can't take my eyes off of the fact that the TV is ginormous.
00:29:13I'm not looking at the TV.
00:29:15I'm more interested in what's happening around me.
00:29:19I want to touch everything.
00:29:21Well, you can.
00:29:22You can.
00:29:23Wow!
00:29:23I want to sit in that chair.
00:29:26There's a lot happening around me.
00:29:28I can't quite put my finger on it.
00:29:29There's an Art Deco light.
00:29:31Yeah.
00:29:32There's fluffy modern chairs.
00:29:34It's everything.
00:29:35It is.
00:29:36There's even, like, a little dirty martini waiting for us.
00:29:39It's an interesting aesthetic.
00:29:41But one thing they have got, I think, absolutely right is scale.
00:29:46Yeah, absolutely.
00:29:47I mean, that is a huge sofa.
00:29:49Yep.
00:29:49A lot of people will come in here and say, that sofa is too long for that space.
00:29:53I actually love it.
00:29:54I'm with you.
00:29:55I think the scale's bang on.
00:29:56And the other thing that's hard not to notice is the abundance of texture.
00:30:00And I think in a room that doesn't have a lot of colour, the texture needs to work
00:30:06extra hard.
00:30:06Yes.
00:30:07And I like what I'm seeing.
00:30:11I think the colour palette is lovely.
00:30:25I think it's very unoffensive.
00:30:28I can feel a big butt coming.
00:30:33But there's a lot going on in my opinion.
00:30:36Oh, Simon.
00:30:37That light is scaring me.
00:30:38Like, I'm going to have nightmares about that light.
00:30:41I mean, the chandelier is a real focal point.
00:30:45To me, this is like a mid-century Italian chandelier.
00:30:49Yes, I agree.
00:30:50All fair points, guys.
00:30:52But can we just step back with me here for a second, right?
00:30:55Yep.
00:30:55Yep.
00:30:56I just cannot get my head around this wall.
00:31:05What is it?
00:31:06Is it a sponge painting?
00:31:07Look, it's...
00:31:08I just don't quite understand.
00:31:09It's meant to look like oxidised metal.
00:31:11It is.
00:31:11I was going to say, they've tried to give it a patina.
00:31:13Yeah.
00:31:13It's come out very kind of, well, yellow.
00:31:16I see so much yellow.
00:31:19I mean, there was a time in interior design, interior decoration a while ago when oxidisation
00:31:24was big.
00:31:24We were seeing it everywhere, but we haven't seen it for quite a long time.
00:31:28Neil, there's a reason we haven't seen it in a long time.
00:31:31Simon.
00:31:31And this is the reason.
00:31:32Simon.
00:31:33It's hideous.
00:31:35This was a big risk, right?
00:31:37A massive risk.
00:31:39I think for the first room, for our first, like, perception of these contestants,
00:31:45to do this was massive.
00:31:47Yes.
00:31:48Yes.
00:31:49And I think they stuffed up.
00:32:16And, furthermore, the lack of attention to detail...
00:32:23The cornice is sticking out, the gap in the floor.
00:32:28You can see they've run out of time.
00:32:31Like, it's very obvious to me.
00:32:33I mean, that's either poor workmanship or just the clock was ticking.
00:32:36But it's not finished.
00:32:37Or both.
00:32:37Or both.
00:32:39Thoughts on the fireplace?
00:32:42You don't look happy about it, Simon.
00:32:44I feel like I have to step back.
00:32:46It's freaking me out.
00:32:47How does that actually...
00:32:49I think it's faux on the outside and gas on the inside.
00:32:53From a styling perspective, I think that really lets the authenticity down.
00:32:58God, you say things so nicely.
00:32:59It's foul, is what you're trying to say.
00:33:01Well, I'm not a fan.
00:33:03It's a real mistake to put that timber there.
00:33:06I'm reading that as somebody looking at that fireplace after it's been put in
00:33:10and thinking it doesn't make the impact we wanted it to make because it's too small.
00:33:14We better put some timber there just to sort of make a statement.
00:33:17It really doesn't work.
00:33:19It looks very cluttered, it looks very messy,
00:33:21and it's made the whole thing look very ugly.
00:33:27That is a massive screw-up,
00:33:29and I'm not sure I can come back from that.
00:33:35After that patchy start,
00:33:37let's see if Emma and Michelle can redeem themselves with their guest bedroom.
00:33:44Wow.
00:33:44Oh.
00:33:46Ooh.
00:33:49Okay.
00:34:01Guest room.
00:34:02Yeah, clearly guest room.
00:34:04I'm locking us in.
00:34:05Oh, gosh.
00:34:06I don't know whether that's a good or a bad thing.
00:34:08Colour palette.
00:34:09Can we start there?
00:34:11I quite like it.
00:34:13They've continued the theme here of texture.
00:34:17Beautiful door handles.
00:34:18Yes.
00:34:19I think this wood is beautiful,
00:34:21and it actually looks like this room was meant to match.
00:34:25It's actually very unoffensive.
00:34:27I find it pleasant.
00:34:28I find it easy,
00:34:29and I think they've done a nice, lovely job.
00:34:36Well, I'm going to stir the pot.
00:34:38I find this guest room quite ordinary.
00:34:41Okay.
00:34:42For me, it misses that something else that the living room had,
00:34:47an ingredient that didn't quite come off,
00:34:51but was giving that room a touch of glamour
00:34:54that I'm not picking up on in here.
00:34:56This is nice.
00:34:58It's inoffensive.
00:34:59What would you have done to glam it up?
00:35:03A bit of oxidisation, I think.
00:35:05Oh, God, Neil.
00:35:05Wash your mouth out.
00:35:07A little bit goes a long way.
00:35:08No.
00:35:09Seriously, seriously.
00:35:10No.
00:35:10Okay.
00:35:11The oxidised wall wasn't executed particularly successfully,
00:35:15but I know where they were going with it.
00:35:18In here, we've just gone back.
00:35:20I think, to sort of predictable Scandi meets Japandi.
00:35:25I'd love to see a little bit of a shake-up
00:35:27from this safety zone that we've entered.
00:35:29So is it, for instance...
00:35:31Walsconces instead of these pendants.
00:35:32Exactly right.
00:35:33Or is it instead of pendants that are that safe,
00:35:36do they reference back the glass and bring that in
00:35:39so at least we're getting that tie through?
00:35:41The cohesion is not 100% there.
00:35:43I know it's a guest bedroom, but just take it up a notch.
00:35:48All right.
00:35:49Shall we head off to see if there's any scaries in the next room?
00:35:52I'm game if you are, Simon.
00:35:55Next, we have husband and wife Nathan and Julia,
00:35:59who took on the bathroom
00:36:01and turned the bedroom into a kid's room.
00:36:05They're...
00:36:06I'm not always right, but I'm never wrong.
00:36:08Well, Julia's strategy was to be bold and headstrong
00:36:12with her style...
00:36:13Are you talking style or practicality?
00:36:15Style.
00:36:16Leave that one to me.
00:36:18..and her colour picks.
00:36:19That's the bone and that's the white.
00:36:21So they're the two we're working off as our main tile.
00:36:24Yep.
00:36:25And then, essentially, like a plum berry.
00:36:28Because this wall is being painted,
00:36:29I'm going to paint this like a maroon.
00:36:31Refusing to let missing tiles...
00:36:33Yeah, we're short.
00:36:34So I'll need them here first thing tomorrow,
00:36:35otherwise we're looking to not be able to finish around.
00:36:38..derail her plans.
00:36:39So it's not looking likely.
00:36:41We won't get our tiles today.
00:36:42All right.
00:36:43We're going to use this tile in that spot.
00:36:46Use those pattern tiles as our skirting tile.
00:36:48But will her daring designs pay off
00:36:51when the judges weigh in?
00:36:56Oh!
00:36:58Wow!
00:37:03Whoa!
00:37:04Our first bathroom.
00:37:05Wow!
00:37:06And it is a wow.
00:37:09OK, these are different contestants now.
00:37:16You know what's hitting me straight away?
00:37:17What?
00:37:18It just feels like the quality's better.
00:37:21Like, I'm not seeing any of the unfinished,
00:37:25unpainted, mismatching gaps.
00:37:27Yes.
00:37:27I mean, there's a lot to like in here.
00:37:34I love that they put a shower and a bath,
00:37:38and that bath is almost like a spa.
00:37:40I love the double basins.
00:37:42Kids can brush their teeth and get ready for school.
00:37:47But I'd love to see a vanity here with storage for a family to use.
00:37:53Face level storage.
00:37:54I just don't think this is enough.
00:37:55It's not enough.
00:37:57I think for me, the elephant in the room is this horrible colour.
00:38:04Plum.
00:38:04I'm struggling to handle that in a bathroom, which should really be retreat-like.
00:38:09You should want to come in here and feel like you want to sink in that amazing bath and relax.
00:38:15If I had to stare at that wall, I'd put sunglasses on.
00:38:19I can't cope with it.
00:38:21Neil, your thoughts on Plum?
00:38:22No, I don't have the problem that you have.
00:38:24I actually think the tiles against that colour are quite lovely,
00:38:27but I just want to see more of it.
00:38:29It feels bitty to me at the moment.
00:38:32I want to see these tiles carry on.
00:38:34Elongate, yes.
00:38:35I think that would have made the world of difference.
00:38:39I mean, if we're thinking back to the lounge and the glamour and glitz that we had going on in
00:38:44there,
00:38:44do you feel like we're standing in a room that's connected to the rest of the house that we've already
00:38:48seen?
00:38:49There is no cohesion, and that is a big issue.
00:38:54Well, I think seeing one more room will really firm up our opinions of that.
00:38:58Madam, would you like to lead the way?
00:39:00Let me take the charge.
00:39:01Our little cowgirl today.
00:39:02Woo-hoo!
00:39:04Don't do that again after you kneel.
00:39:05I can't watch that twice.
00:39:09The judges are trotting on to Nathan and Julia's kids' bedroom.
00:39:17Oh!
00:39:19Come in, guys.
00:39:22This is cool.
00:39:23This is so cool.
00:39:25Wow.
00:39:26If I'm lying here, will you take me home?
00:39:32Oh, I love it.
00:39:33Very cute.
00:39:35Look at this.
00:39:36Simon, you can have the bottom bunk and I'll have the top.
00:39:39Done.
00:39:39Are we going to be roomies?
00:39:40Yeah, let's be roomies.
00:39:42Will you take me home?
00:39:45Will you take me home?
00:39:48Oh, guys, this is really well done.
00:39:50I like it a lot.
00:39:52It matches.
00:39:54Look.
00:39:56Finally, stripes and stripes.
00:39:57They match.
00:39:59It feels fun and functional, yet also stylish.
00:40:04Like, it's hard to make a kid's room stylish.
00:40:06Yes, it is.
00:40:08Even by the bed there, there's storage space, there's shelves, there's little pictures.
00:40:13I love the little hanging monkey.
00:40:15I love the swinging chair.
00:40:17Oh, you want to move in.
00:40:18It's cute.
00:40:18I want a little ladder in my bedroom.
00:40:23I'm loving the striped wall.
00:40:26Guys, do you know what?
00:40:27This is not wallpaper.
00:40:29What?
00:40:30What?
00:40:31This has been painted.
00:40:32Oh.
00:40:33Look.
00:40:34Wow.
00:40:34Goodness.
00:40:35I just assumed that was wallpaper.
00:40:37Wow.
00:40:39Unbelievable.
00:40:42Really stunning.
00:40:44It's beautiful.
00:40:45Do you know what they've done in here?
00:40:46They've created a real little world.
00:40:50I mean, any kid walking in here is going to go crazy, right?
00:40:54Absolutely.
00:40:55I literally want to sit down and start drawing.
00:40:58Go on, Simon.
00:40:58We want to see what little masterpiece you make, Picasso.
00:41:01Is that weird?
00:41:02Simon, you are weird.
00:41:04I'm going to draw my name, and then we're going on to the next house.
00:41:09Simon was here.
00:41:19Our judges are in Bulleen, Melbourne.
00:41:22Fresh off some very strong opinions of House 1,
00:41:25now all eyes are on House 2.
00:41:29Next up for judgment, best mates Frankie and Isaac,
00:41:33who took on the bedroom and bathroom.
00:41:38Despite claiming underdog status
00:41:39because of their minimal renovation experience...
00:41:42The underdogs.
00:41:44Yeah.
00:41:44The underdogs are here to give it a break.
00:41:45I do feel like we are the underdogs.
00:41:47Happy sway.
00:41:48The boys started their week on a high.
00:41:52But the enormity of the task ahead soon swallowed them whole.
00:41:57You need to make your choices today.
00:41:59Does this come in 1,800?
00:42:01Do you have any white marble tops?
00:42:03Do you guys have new fixture colours?
00:42:06Yeah.
00:42:06And setback after setback...
00:42:08Pull the oil ceiling down.
00:42:10...put them to the test.
00:42:12I may as well jump in the bin now, the way this place is going.
00:42:15Now the question remains,
00:42:17will these underdogs' designs have bite?
00:42:25Oh!
00:42:29I've been on my own for a minute
00:42:33Is it only me?
00:42:34Love that tile.
00:42:37Searching for the place to begin at
00:42:39Is it me?
00:42:41Is it you?
00:42:42Is it me?
00:42:44Standing on the line I was given...
00:42:47Frankly?
00:42:48Skylight!
00:42:48I mean, seriously,
00:42:50it makes you want to sing opera. That's so good. Styling that's appropriate, colour matched, thought
00:42:56through. I think that the choice of mirrors, which are storage cabinets, is terrific. I think the boy's
00:43:04done good. High five, Neil. I'm with you. No. No. No. What are you saying no for? Simon, what are
00:43:15you
00:43:15talking about? I feel like I've walked into a bathroom I've walked into a thousand times before.
00:43:21I love that there's storage. I just think there's nothing creative about that or this bathroom.
00:43:28Oh my god, Simon, what planet are you from today? Planet Earth, babe. That is so not the case. Look
00:43:35at this place.
00:43:38We both don't have to love it. I know. Just so you know. All right. Right? I think it's really
00:43:43important to say that we don't all have to agree. I think it makes life a lot more interesting.
00:43:50I think that, Simon, you're absolutely right. I also have seen this sort of ripple effect a bit too much.
00:43:57But for me, the genius in this bathroom is this. I've got to go in here because I want to
00:44:05see this
00:44:05beautiful tiling at close range. Oh yeah. You know what's clever here? They have used scale to their
00:44:16favour. So they've got lots of almost like an oversized mosaic here. Excellent grout choice. I
00:44:22can't explain how impressed I am with that because so many people that use small tiles like this
00:44:28cover them in a white grout and it's just so busy. I mean, I want these tiles in my bathroom.
00:44:35Yeah,
00:44:35I love them. I would have these at home in a heartbeat. Same. Then we look at the floor and
00:44:39you've got these giant format size tiles. I love the floor tiles. I love them a lot, but just not
00:44:46in here.
00:44:49I just feel like they don't match. I know they're all different, but to me,
00:44:53they all speak to each other. All right. Well, onwards and upwards, my fellow judges,
00:44:58shall we go to the next room? Maybe it'll be Frankie and Isaac's guest bedroom that finally
00:45:04unites our judges. Oh. Oh no.
00:45:13Okay.
00:45:16I feel like the life's been sucked out of me. Oh my goodness.
00:45:27I don't know if I'm in my grandmother's room or... It's not good. It's just beige on beige.
00:45:34We've got beige carpet onto a beige rug with a beige ottoman and a beige bedhead
00:45:40and even beige coloured tendons. There's no warmth. No.
00:45:44You take yourself back to the bathroom and how we all felt in there compared to this
00:45:49and it's a letdown. Look, if you were a guest and you were shown into this room, you know,
00:45:54you couldn't complain. It's got a nice bed. It's got a desk. It's got somewhere to hang your clothes.
00:45:59But it's just got no vibe. It's got no personality. It's boring. It's boring. It's boring. It's really boring.
00:46:09The artworks. That is the most dull artwork. In a room that is very neutral, the last thing you need
00:46:16is
00:46:16a neutral artwork. The pendants hanging either side of the bed are lovely, but they're too small.
00:46:22They're almost apologetic. Just be bigger. I wonder if I just ran out of time. Yeah.
00:46:28They probably thought, oh, we're dividing up our time. You know, we'll give 75% of that time to the
00:46:32bathroom
00:46:33because bathrooms are harder to do. Look what happens when you do that. Right.
00:46:36I mean, so it's a time management issue as well as a styling issue. The fundamentals are there.
00:46:41Yes. I just think visually there's zero wow factor. There's two more rooms to see, so we've got to
00:46:49we've got to get our skates on. This is going to be a hard one. Sure is.
00:46:55Still to come. This is a vibe, guys. I like this. This is such a vibe. I think you both
00:47:00like it. I
00:47:01really like it. But our judges don't always agree. What are you doing sitting at a table in here?
00:47:07This is a baby's room. Do you know what I mean? I don't know, Simon. And later, the judges face
00:47:11off
00:47:12with our teams. It felt quite luxe. It felt a little bit glam. Loved the sense of the unexpected. It
00:47:19was
00:47:19without doubt one of the best rooms I've ever judged on a show. But not everyone is celebrating.
00:47:27It really fell flat. Unfortunately, you let yourself down. It just was a mess.
00:47:41Our judges are in house two. And our final team up for judgment,
00:47:46young parents Mitch and Shaz, who this week turned their bedroom into a kid's room
00:47:51and also tackled the living room. It's huge. It is massive. With a huge space to fill,
00:47:58Shaz's strategy was to think outside the box. What's going to be on this side? What about something
00:48:04cool like a ping pong table? A ping pong table? Sure. But Melbourne's weather forced them to redo
00:48:13all their insulation. Oh, gosh. Oh, yeah. So, are we redoing all of that?
00:48:21And dodgy cabinets also had to be remade at the 11th hour. I worry that's going to look...
00:48:27A bit dodge? Yeah. I don't know if we're going to make this look good.
00:48:32However, it was teamwork that kept them going. But will their ping pong inspired design
00:48:40score a game set match with the judges? Oh. Oh, now we're talking.
00:48:48Say, dance for me, dance for me, dance for me. Oh, wow. This is cool.
00:48:53Anybody do the things you do before? Oh. Yes. And it's a cool table tennis table.
00:48:58Move for me, move for me, move for me. Oh, my God. I don't know where to look next.
00:49:02And when you're done, I'll make you do it all again.
00:49:07They say, move for me, move for me, move for me, yeah, yeah.
00:49:12When you're done, I'll make you do it all again.
00:49:14Who gave this room permission to look this good?
00:49:18This is a vibe, guys. I like this. This is such a vibe.
00:49:21I think you both like it. I really like it.
00:49:24It's recreational. You've got a TV zone and actually a TV that fits the room.
00:49:29You've got a play zone and you've got kind of like a library relaxation area.
00:49:36This is a living room that you're really going to live in.
00:49:39Like, what a multi-purpose, great space for kids to hang out.
00:49:46I like this room too.
00:49:48It's like the most sophisticated rumpus room you've ever seen.
00:49:51Yeah.
00:49:52You've got this real mix of styles going on.
00:49:56Yes. It all ties together beautifully.
00:49:58I'm not looking at one side of the room and saying,
00:50:00what's that doing there, when I look at that side of the room.
00:50:03I love this cohesion.
00:50:06And I'm really loving this built-in joinery.
00:50:09The choice of material is really beautiful.
00:50:13Like, that gorgeous, rich wood finish really adds warmth.
00:50:19They've got a mix of textures. Look at that stone bench. Look at that tile plinth.
00:50:25Can we just talk about how cool this is?
00:50:28Oh, yes, we can.
00:50:28I mean, it is a showstopper. Yes.
00:50:30The colour, the texture, the little bit of a shine it has.
00:50:34I love it.
00:50:35Let's take a load off.
00:50:37Have a seat, friends.
00:50:39For their very first room, this is impressive.
00:50:42Somebody knows what they're doing.
00:50:44They sure do.
00:50:45Can I ask you guys a serious question?
00:50:47Yes.
00:50:48Who wants to take me on at ping-pong?
00:50:50Me!
00:50:51Let's go.
00:50:52Not me.
00:50:52I love ping-pong.
00:50:54You've got to watch out, Simon Cohen.
00:50:56You don't know what's coming your way.
00:50:57It's game on.
00:50:58You ready?
00:51:01Oh.
00:51:05Okay, judges.
00:51:06I reckon that's enough playing.
00:51:07We'll challenge you later, mister.
00:51:08Sorry, loser.
00:51:10Did you call her a loser?
00:51:11If the shoe or the boot fits.
00:51:14We've still got Mitch and Shazza's kids' bedroom to look at.
00:51:20Oh!
00:51:21Ha-ha!
00:51:21Another children's room.
00:51:24Oh-ho!
00:51:25Okay.
00:51:33The minute I walk through the door, I'm getting a really nice sense of warmth.
00:51:38I mean, there is something quite cocooning, quite enveloping about this room that I like.
00:51:44Mm-hmm.
00:51:44Yeah, I agree.
00:51:45I love that they managed to fit a little study in a kid's bedroom.
00:51:50It makes it very multi-purpose.
00:51:52They've very cleverly thought out practicality.
00:51:56There is different zones that kids can play.
00:51:59The attention to detail and the workmanship is really good.
00:52:04I mean, we're so used to seeing kids' rooms that are done in much more traditional pinks and blues and
00:52:10pretty patterns.
00:52:11Whereas they've used this very contemporary, warm, neutral palette.
00:52:14I mean, this is the sort of child of that living room.
00:52:18I can see a sense of cohesion in the little choices like the little bedside table there.
00:52:23Even that little wall sconce mimics one of the lamps that they've got in the other room.
00:52:28So I can see the references.
00:52:30I think the issue for me is I don't know whether I like the orientation of the bed and where
00:52:36it's placed.
00:52:38I feel like there's all this negative space here.
00:52:40I mean, if you've got a room out there with a ping pong table, what are you doing sitting at
00:52:45a table in here?
00:52:45Because this is a baby's room.
00:52:47Do you know what I mean?
00:52:47I don't know, Simon.
00:52:48Someone who's playing a dad isn't playing ping pong.
00:52:50I don't hide.
00:52:51Why kids learn ping pong very early?
00:52:52I hope not off you because you would have really disappointed them.
00:52:57Well, guys, it's the fun part.
00:53:00We've got to get our skates on, kids.
00:53:02This is going to be a hard one.
00:53:03Yep.
00:53:04To the scoring we go.
00:53:14After a gruelling first week in Melbourne, it's time for our couples to face our judges
00:53:20for the very first time.
00:53:23I don't think Mum and I could have done any more or given any more energy.
00:53:30What we've achieved, I'm honestly absolutely stoked.
00:53:34I wouldn't change a thing.
00:53:41Professionally and personally, we've sacrificed a lot to be here.
00:53:45So we're here to win and we're here to play hard.
00:53:49If we can start out with a bang today and take out a win, then we know we're on the
00:53:55right track.
00:53:58These professionals are judging our work.
00:54:01Yeah, you'd usually work your way up to a moment like this and be judged by
00:54:05your parents, followed by your partner, followed by somebody you've done a job for.
00:54:09But hey, we've gone straight to the top and let's just get judged by them.
00:54:12What a stupid thing to do.
00:54:14God knows what's coming.
00:54:25Ladies.
00:54:26Hello.
00:54:26Oh, welcome.
00:54:27Hello.
00:54:28Great to see you.
00:54:29Hi.
00:54:30Hi.
00:54:31Hello.
00:54:32Hello.
00:54:33Great to see you.
00:54:34Wow.
00:54:35Look at you guys.
00:54:36You all look gorgeous.
00:54:37Not in shady boots anymore.
00:54:38I know.
00:54:39Welcome everyone to your very first scoring night.
00:54:45Where the competition really begins.
00:54:48So, let's meet the people who will be scoring your rooms each week.
00:54:53Your judges, interior stylist, Julia Green.
00:55:03The nation's highest grossing buyers agent, yes, he's cashed up, Simon Cohen.
00:55:09Woo!
00:55:11And design icon, Neil Whittaker.
00:55:17I love Neil.
00:55:18You admire Neil Whittaker so much.
00:55:21It's like, she's fangirling hard right now.
00:55:24So, this is how the scoring works.
00:55:27Each judge will review your rooms and score them out of 10.
00:55:33Each week, those scores will be tallied up.
00:55:36And the team who has the top score on that leaderboard at the end of the competition
00:55:40wins a life-changing $250,000.
00:55:48We're going to start with Nathan and Julia.
00:55:54You made a guest bedroom a kid's bedroom.
00:55:58Let's see how you went.
00:56:03I don't have children, but I was one once.
00:56:06And I kind of remember how important it was for my room when I was a kid to be a
00:56:13little
00:56:13self-contained world.
00:56:14And that's what I think a kid's room has to be.
00:56:18And that's what you guys created absolutely beautifully.
00:56:22Thank you so much.
00:56:24The minute we walked in the room, I think we all visibly sort of went, oh, didn't we?
00:56:28I loved it.
00:56:31I absolutely wanted to stay there all day long.
00:56:35Simon even sat down and wrote his name with the crayons.
00:56:38I did a bloody good job.
00:56:39You did.
00:56:40She was very proud.
00:56:41Well done, Simon.
00:56:44I mean, you made a kid's bedroom feel upmarket.
00:56:48In my opinion, you knocked it out of the park this week with that room.
00:56:52Thank you so much.
00:56:53Big congratulations.
00:56:53Thank you so much.
00:56:55And if you're missing a monkey, he stole it.
00:56:58That was an expensive monkey.
00:57:01All right, let's find out what the judges thought of your main bathroom.
00:57:06Now, I walked into that bathroom and immediately felt like the functionality was all there.
00:57:13I was ticking the boxes.
00:57:15But then, unfortunately for me, I turned around and I caught a big chunk of plum wall with some tiles
00:57:25that I felt weren't a great marriage.
00:57:29I really need to find out from you why you made that decision.
00:57:35I think we tried to do something that felt safe for us, but bold for other people.
00:57:44We understood that the style wasn't going to marry up with everyone and it wasn't going to be everyone's palette.
00:57:48But, yeah, wanted to try and do something that was just going to be a little bit, yeah, a bit
00:57:52bold.
00:57:55Well, the good news, guys, is I love the colour.
00:57:59I love the plum.
00:58:00Look, I'm a child of the 70s.
00:58:02It was one of the key colours of that era, which means it is very much on trend now.
00:58:07So, for me, it actually worked well.
00:58:11Then, of course, you do start to see a few little things that aren't quite right.
00:58:15I do agree with Julia on the tiling.
00:58:18You should have extended those tiles to either end of the bathroom and then it would have really popped.
00:58:24It would have really sunk.
00:58:26That was really good feedback for us, but I've never felt more uncomfortable.
00:58:31We're not going to win this competition from being good at something.
00:58:33We're going to need to be great at this to win.
00:58:38Alright, now on to Emma and Michelle, who are also in that house.
00:58:43We're going to start with your living room.
00:58:50Julia, what did you think?
00:58:52I really liked it.
00:58:54It felt quite luxe.
00:58:56It felt a little bit glam.
00:58:58But guys, I can't not talk about the elephant in the room.
00:59:04The oxidised wall.
00:59:08You've drawn enormous attention right to the middle of the room.
00:59:13And I don't think the finish was exactly how it probably should have been.
00:59:18Unfortunately, you let yourself down with the oxidised wall, but more importantly, bad finishes.
00:59:26I'm talking about the skirts.
00:59:28Yes, we knew that. That was, um...
00:59:31We've never painted before.
00:59:33No, and that was obvious.
00:59:37We did have the white skirts. The boys were running very late.
00:59:41But what you have to remember, Michelle and Emma, as you go through the competition,
00:59:44is we don't know any of that.
00:59:46Correct, yes.
00:59:46And quite frankly, we don't care.
00:59:56That wall, it just was a mess.
01:00:01That wall just felt like it was sponge painted.
01:00:06It just was...
01:00:11Just, yeah, I guess in a word, that whole wall and fireplace was just hideous.
01:00:21Hearing Simon say it was hideous.
01:00:24Yeah, maybe it was to him.
01:00:26It definitely wasn't nice to hear. It's like a, you know...
01:00:30A punch in the face.
01:00:43Emma?
01:00:44Yes?
01:00:45You've had a lot of feedback.
01:00:46Yeah.
01:00:47How does that really feel, though, to have that?
01:00:49Yeah, I mean, it's a little bit disappointing, because I just know how week one, it's just
01:00:53been learning and time and stress, and it's discouraging.
01:00:59We just had to keep changing, and it was very new to us.
01:01:03We're not used to the time constraints, but I think we're going to get better and choose more wisely.
01:01:10You also had a guest bedroom.
01:01:15They're going to get scored badly for our bedroom, too.
01:01:20OK, well, if the living room kind of suffered from an excess of ideas,
01:01:26I think your guest bedroom was the opposite.
01:01:30It felt, in comparison, quite flat.
01:01:36It wasn't a room that had any wow factor when you walked through the door.
01:01:41And the reason I'm saying that to you is because your living room was full of it.
01:01:47We might have all been at odds with our opinions of the oxidised wall, but you had an oxidised wall.
01:01:53That's a bold design statement. But unfortunately, when so much depends on the sort of synergy
01:02:00between all these rooms in the house, you've got to make sure there's consistency.
01:02:05I think everyone should take note of this. For next week, cohesion's really important.
01:02:11You want to walk through a front door, and you want to walk into every room in the home,
01:02:15and you want it to feel like the same home. Now, that doesn't mean every room should be identical.
01:02:20That's a big no-no. But you certainly want it to all feel like it's one style and one home,
01:02:26and one designer did it.
01:02:33Well, House One, you've now heard all of the judges' thoughts. To House Number Two.
01:02:39And the first team the judges will be giving feedback to is...
01:02:44Frankie and Isaac.
01:02:47Looking forward to it. Good.
01:02:51Let's hear what Julia thought of your main bathroom.
01:02:57Boys, boys, boys.
01:03:04I loved it.
01:03:07No, seriously, this bathroom cranked my tractor. I walked in there...
01:03:13What?
01:03:14What tractor you got?
01:03:17Excited me.
01:03:18That's me.
01:03:18She's really excited.
01:03:19Yeah.
01:03:20The palette was bang on.
01:03:24There was so much warmth coming out of that beautiful little terracotta tile,
01:03:28and that grout choice. Clever, clever, clever.
01:03:32Well done.
01:03:33Thank you very much. Thanks. Thanks heaps.
01:03:35Well, we only ever seen soccer change rooms and soccer bathrooms, so we just wanted to go above that.
01:03:41And so far, so good.
01:03:44Well, it was definitely better than a soccer change room, that's for sure.
01:03:47But for me, unfortunately, I just felt like I had stepped into something I had stepped into
01:03:53a lot. I thought there was a bit too much going on. I liked the towels on the floor, for
01:04:00example,
01:04:01but I don't think they worked with the rest of the bathroom.
01:04:06Yep.
01:04:06And so it was just a little unoriginal for me this week.
01:04:10Now it's time to hear about the guest bedroom.
01:04:16I didn't feel the same way, guys, in the guest bedroom. I'm sorry. It really fell flat.
01:04:24It was beige on beige.
01:04:27Come on.
01:04:29And the bedspread colours, all the same block colours. The rug just was unnecessary.
01:04:35Just did not excite me at all.
01:04:40This bedroom really, really let you down. It was just not good at all.
01:04:44It kind of felt like my grandmother's room.
01:04:49But my grandmother had a lot more taste.
01:04:54I think that the bedroom guys suffered from a lack of confidence.
01:04:58It feels like the bedroom was a bit of an afterthought and you ran out of steam.
01:05:05I think you're right in saying that, yeah.
01:05:0770% of our time and effort was put into that bathroom.
01:05:10But in a competition like this, unfortunately,
01:05:12you've got to devote the same amount of attention, energy, time, creativity, ideas,
01:05:19to every single room. The bedroom lacked spark.
01:05:26You described yourself as the underdogs. That's got to go. If you think you're the underdogs,
01:05:33you'll be the underdogs.
01:05:35Get it out of your mind. You're not the underdogs.
01:05:37All right? Them challenging us to just trust our gut and do something crazy definitely
01:05:42challenges us next week. And that's what our guts were telling us to do, but our brain was like,
01:05:46no, don't do that.
01:05:47All right. Well, there is one last scene that still needs to be judged.
01:05:51Finally.
01:05:52Mitch and Chaz.
01:05:53I have somewhere to be.
01:05:56You had a guest bedroom that you transformed into a kid's bedroom.
01:06:01First up with feedback, it's Neil.
01:06:06Guys, I described your kid's bedroom as a warm cocoon.
01:06:14Yes.
01:06:15It had a good feeling.
01:06:19And I have to say that I am noticing a cohesiveness in this house that, I mean,
01:06:25I think maybe house one could take a little bit of a lesson from house two in terms of cohesion.
01:06:32OK, Julia.
01:06:34Your colour choices were beautiful.
01:06:36You know, the styling was very good, but you know what?
01:06:41The bed placement, not great. I feel like it was all pushed up into one corner.
01:06:46We were a little bit questioning it, but the location of the windows really threw us, so yeah.
01:06:52Where would you have positioned the bed?
01:06:54I'd like to see it come more centred in between that wall, yeah.
01:06:57Sorry, but I actually disagree with Julia.
01:06:59I thought the placement of the bed was absolutely perfect.
01:07:04He doesn't have kids.
01:07:06Don't listen to Simon. He's got no idea what he's talking about.
01:07:09I bought houses for lots of people with kids that I know.
01:07:11It gave that room such great functionality.
01:07:14Great. Thank you, Simon.
01:07:15Cheers, mate.
01:07:16You also tackled the living room.
01:07:24Hmm. Where do I start?
01:07:29I guess I'd start by saying walking into that room, it was without doubt one of the best rooms I've
01:07:37ever judged on a show.
01:07:40That whole room, it just felt like Hollywood baby. Do you know what I mean?
01:07:43It was cool. It was, like, eccentric. The tones were awesome. It was stylish. It felt expensive. It felt luxurious.
01:07:53And you turned it into the most multipurpose, multifunctional family room. Whoever gets this house is going to have the
01:08:02house that everyone's going to want to come and hang out.
01:08:04Thank you. Well done. I really appreciate that. Wow.
01:08:07Can I just say, that tiled bench is everything. Everything.
01:08:14Do you know Mitch tiled that himself? He's never tiled before.
01:08:17He lost, like, six centimetres off his height for being bent over for so long.
01:08:20I did, mate. My back was dead.
01:08:23I loved it too. Loved the sense of the unexpected. I loved your room.
01:08:31It's an amazing palette. I honestly think it's one of the most sophisticated rooms I've seen in a very long
01:08:37time. Guys, pretty damn perfect.
01:08:44I'm ready to die. She's been fangirling so hard about seeing you.
01:08:50It's, like, the most incredible compliment that I probably will ever receive in my life.
01:08:55Oh. Jazz, please don't die yet. Yeah, okay.
01:08:57Finish the house. We've got some stuff to do.
01:08:59Yeah, yeah. I can't do the rest of the house myself.
01:09:01Neil sort of inspired her to become an interior designer.
01:09:05So to get that, I guess, reward for her work from someone she admires is well-deserved.
01:09:11I'm so proud of it.
01:09:24All right, let's get to the all-important scoring, shall we?
01:09:30Each judge will give you a score out of ten, based on both of your rooms.
01:09:34Those scores add up each week, and the team with the most points at the end of the competition wins
01:09:40a quarter of a million dollars.
01:09:44Let's get the leaderboard up.
01:09:49Julia, what is your score for Nathan and Julia's rooms?
01:09:57You clearly have a good eye for design.
01:10:01I'm just wanting a little bit more cohesion, and for that reason, I'm scoring you guys...
01:10:08...seven out of ten.
01:10:11I think you've made a really strong start. I'm giving you 7.5.
01:10:17You made me feel like a kid again, and for that I score big. So, this week, I'm scoring you
01:10:23an eight out of ten.
01:10:26So, your total score is...
01:10:3022.5.
01:10:32Great start.
01:10:35Now to Emma and Michelle, who took on a living room...
01:10:40...and a guest bedroom in House One.
01:10:44Emma and Michelle, I know that you guys can do better. You've got to pay attention to those details.
01:10:54And so, for that reason, I'm giving you both a six out of ten.
01:10:59Excellent effort trying to introduce something bold and different.
01:11:03For that reason, I'm giving you a 7.5 out of ten.
01:11:09I'm scoring you a 7 out of ten.
01:11:12Okay, thank you.
01:11:14That brings your total to...
01:11:1720.5.
01:11:20Just behind Nathan and Julia.
01:11:25Of course, it's a little bit heartbreaking, especially week one and, you know, it was just so full-on for
01:11:32us.
01:11:32All we can do is hone in, learn, listen and get better next week.
01:11:38All right, let's head over to house number two.
01:11:41Frankie and Isaac.
01:11:43You took on a guest bedroom.
01:11:47And the main bathroom.
01:11:50So, Julia, what are you going to score the boys?
01:11:53Boys.
01:11:55That bathroom saved you.
01:11:57I scored you guys 7.5.
01:12:01Guys, you are underdogs no more.
01:12:04I'm giving you seven out of ten.
01:12:06This week, I've got no choice but to score you a...
01:12:12...six out of ten.
01:12:16That brings your total score to 20.5.
01:12:20I'll be equal last.
01:12:24For our final round of scores, we go over to Mitch and Chaz.
01:12:33Mitch and Chaz, that was a really, really strong start.
01:12:41I think you delivered a cool, contemporary aesthetic with serious finesse.
01:12:47I'm giving you eight out of ten.
01:12:51I'm giving you eight out of ten.
01:12:53Because of your exceptional work, a nine out of ten.
01:13:00That brings your total score to 25 out of 30.
01:13:07And shoots you straight to the top of the leaderboard.
01:13:10Well done.
01:13:14How do you feel? Top of the leaderboard in week one.
01:13:16I can't believe you guys loved it.
01:13:18Thank you so much.
01:13:19Actually, I've been panicking this whole time.
01:13:22Like, no, the whole thing is awful.
01:13:23What were we thinking?
01:13:24Nobody likes ping pong.
01:13:26Turns out they do.
01:13:28To know that we're on the right path.
01:13:30They're loving what we're doing.
01:13:31We've just got to keep this up.
01:13:33And to be honest, we've just got to up the ante now.
01:13:36And make sure that we stay on top.
01:13:37Because I'm telling you right now, those other teams,
01:13:40they're going to be looking at us and coming hard.
01:13:43Well, congratulations to the two of you.
01:13:45Cheers, mate.
01:13:46And you are closer than anyone to that $250,000.
01:13:53But to all of you, remember, each week, every single point counts towards that final total score.
01:14:02So, those at the top, you must maintain momentum.
01:14:05Those at the bottom, you need to smash it out of the park.
01:14:12I'm upset that we didn't deliver.
01:14:15It's definitely devastating.
01:14:17I really hope that we never, ever have to hear the word hideous again.
01:14:25Oh, my.
01:14:27Tuesday, 7.30.
01:14:28As the houses rise.
01:14:30A quarter of a million dollars.
01:14:33So does the prize.
01:14:35I did not know this.
01:14:37First place will now be competing for $1 million.
01:14:45Now, they'll do anything for a million dollars.
01:14:50The gloves are off.
01:14:52We need to win.
01:14:53You're on.
01:14:54But one of the homes you could win has a secret.
01:14:59Are you and Emma and Michelle talking to each other?
01:15:01We are, yes.
01:15:03No, we don't need to tell Jill or anything.
01:15:05Are you really?
01:15:10We're doing the same paint colour, the same wallpaper, the same bar.
01:15:14Are you kidding yourself?
01:15:16It's almost like she thought we were copying her.
01:15:20The home you could win will leave everyone speechless.
01:15:28Simon, you say something.
01:15:32And unmissable My Renault Rules, Tuesday, 7.30.
