The Sports Junkies break down round one of the 2026 NFL draft.
Transcript
00:00I bet the under 821 in 30 seconds for the first pick.
00:05Kudos to Roger Goodell and the NFL.
00:08There was a little pause at the beginning when they brought out every stealer known to man.
00:16Well, they brought out Lin Swan and Bettis.
00:18That was later.
00:19Oh, that was later.
00:20Okay, I'm sorry.
00:21You think they're not going to do the same thing next year here in D.C.?
00:23I'm sure.
00:24They're going to trot out all the legends.
00:24I can't remember who he brought out to start the draft.
00:26Well, to start, there was T.J. Watt and there was Hayward.
00:30Oh, okay.
00:30And then they started bringing in some old schoolers like Terry Bradshaw.
00:34Big Ben showed up on stage.
00:38Yeah, there was about seven or eight guys that showed up on stage at that point.
00:42And then, boom, they started the draft.
00:45And thankfully, a lot of teams didn't use their full eight minutes.
00:51So, we knew Fernando Mendoza was going to go number one.
00:56Right.
00:57So, the Raiders have their quarterback.
00:58They've got Kirk Cousins.
01:00They've got Fernando Mendoza.
01:02We'll see how long it takes for Mendoza to become the starter.
01:06I kind of suspect it's going to be a little bit later in the season.
01:09Like, it could be, you know, the Kansas City Chiefs model.
01:12November.
01:13Patrick Mahomes sat behind Alex Smith most of the year.
01:16Yeah.
01:16If I'm the Raiders and I feel like he's ready, I'm throwing him out there week one.
01:21I'm throwing him right into the fire.
01:23I'm usually like that, but I'm just, you gave Kirk Cousins.
01:26Unless you think he's not even close to ready.
01:28You gave Kirk Cousins a lot of money.
01:30He's the placeholder.
01:31So, they draft Mendoza.
01:33Look, if he clearly beats out Cousins in training camp.
01:36Yeah.
01:36I agree with you, but the chances of him, of Cousins just looking awful in training camp
01:42is probably zero.
01:44Right.
01:44I mean, he's going to look good.
01:45He's going to end up being the week one starter.
01:47So, the Jets had the number two pick, and they took David Bailey, not Arvel Reese.
01:53A lot of mock drafts had the Jets taking Arvel Reese.
01:56Bailey maybe had more production sack numbers than Arvel Reese.
02:01So, they got a pass rusher.
02:02And then, maybe the first surprise, like the first pop at Honor Brewing, was that third
02:08pick when Jeremiah Love goes to the Cardinals.
02:10Right, because a lot of people thought that he might fall to seven for the Commanders to
02:15possibly select.
02:16And most mocks had him going four to the Titans.
02:19Right.
02:19And when I was watching ESPN NFL Live during the day, doing pre-draft coverage, all of their
02:26hosts were out there.
02:27You know, Peter Schrager was out there.
02:29Orlovsky was out there.
02:31I can't remember.
02:32Ryan Clark was out there.
02:33I don't know the girl's name.
02:35I think she's kind of Asian, that she's one of their NFL.
02:38The Mina Kimes?
02:39Yeah, Mina Kimes.
02:39That's what you're talking about?
02:40Okay.
02:41And Mina Kimes, when they were talking about the Arizona Cardinals at three, was totally
02:46against drafting Love, because she said they need to go out and improve their offensive
02:49line first, because the offensive line was so bad.
02:53And Schrager and Orlovsky said, you've got to go after the best player to make your team
02:57better.
02:57So they were so pro-love, but they were going at it, because she was anti-love at three,
03:02and they were pro-dramat.
03:04I feel like the Cardinals need some offensive identity, and I think Love brings that to
03:08them.
03:08I've also heard an argument against drafting the running back there based on salary.
03:12Yeah.
03:13Right.
03:13So when you're number three, you're slotted a certain amount of money, like he's already
03:18going to be making like Saquon Barkley money.
03:20Yeah.
03:20That's what happens when you get picked that high in the draft, and it's infrequent that
03:24you see a running back go that high.
03:26Yeah.
03:27So he goes number three, and then another kind of maybe mild surprise, because a lot of people
03:43that's going to select Jeremiah Love, he wasn't available.
03:46They go wide receiver and go Carnell Tate.
03:49I actually like that a lot, because you want a good ecosystem for your young quarterback,
03:54and look what they did in the offseason.
03:56They signed Wandale Robinson, and some people might be like, he's okay.
04:00But he catches like 80-something balls every year, like in the last two years.
04:04I think it might be higher than that.
04:06So that's another like security blanket guy.
04:08You add Carnell Tate, Calvin Ridley's still there, you wonder about his health at this
04:13point, but they need more young, productive players, and Carnell Tate fits that mold.
04:19I mean, it was a little surprising, but it's not a shocking pick.
04:22If Love was available and had dropped to four, I'm guessing they would have taken Love over
04:27Tate.
04:27I would think.
04:28Yeah.
04:28So at number five, I think it's a good pick.
04:30Yeah.
04:30The Giants, who also had the 10th pick, they look at the board, and all of a sudden, Arvel
04:36Reese, who a lot of people had as the potential number two pick, he's available.
04:41They go with Arvel Reese at five.
04:44Were you surprised?
04:45So they could have gone with any of the Ohio State defensive players.
04:48They could have gone down.
04:49It's could have gone Sonny Stiles.
04:50I just feel like that's tremendous value for the Giants.
04:53For a guy who was widely mocked to be the second or third pick, he falls to you at five,
04:59and you add him to a defense that already has Thibodeau and Andrew Carter.
05:03And Burns.
05:03Brian Burns.
05:04I mean, think about all the edge guys, studs that they have.
05:07And that's like a terrifying defense.
05:09It really is.
05:10So I think it's a good pick.
05:11If they get it right on offense, that defense should be a really good compliment.
05:15And man, he's young.
05:15He's 20 years old.
05:16I don't know if he was the youngest guy in the draft, but he's very young.
05:21They say he's much more mature for his age.
05:24He's athletic.
05:25He's going to be really good for them.
05:26I mean, when he got past the Titans at four, I was like, are the commanders going to get
05:32Arvel Reese at seven?
05:33Like, I started thinking about that.
05:36Would you have preferred him over Sonny Stiles?
05:40I don't know.
05:41I think it would have been close.
05:42I would have just trusted Adam Peterson, who he had on the board.
05:45Yeah, I would have been happy with either one.
05:46With either one of those studs if they fall to seven.
05:49It just turns out that it was Sonny Stiles.
05:51But I never realistically expected Arvel Reese to make it to the seven hole.
05:55So Arvel Reese goes number five.
05:57Then you have the first trade.
05:59And there were a bunch of trades.
06:00I think there was eight.
06:00In the first round, the Kansas City Chiefs moved up, traded with the Cleveland Browns.
06:07And they took who, at that point, you're thinking maybe the commanders are going to go Mansoor
06:13Delane.
06:14But the Chiefs said, no, no, no.
06:15We're taking Mansoor Delane.
06:17Well, they traded McDuffie in the offseason to the Rams.
06:20So they had a glaring need at corner.
06:22And they felt Delane was the best guy.
06:24They only had to move up three spots to secure him.
06:27So I thought that made a lot of sense.
06:29It made sense for both the Chiefs and the Browns.
06:32Because the Browns were clearly in the market for a tackle.
06:35And they're watching the first round unfold.
06:37They're like, well, there's no offensive lineman going.
06:40We don't need to stick at six to get our guy.
06:43Get some extra draft capital.
06:44Let the Chiefs move up.
06:46And the Browns still get their guy at nine.
06:48It would have been interesting to see if they did take the trade up to take Stiles.
06:52Right.
06:53If the commanders would have taken Mansoor there.
06:56Or if they would have taken Downs.
06:57Right.
06:58Or Tyson.
06:58I don't know.
06:58One of those guys.
06:59But it would have been interesting to see if they would have jumped on Delane if he was available.
07:03And Stiles wasn't.
07:04So at seven, the commanders take Sonny Stiles.
07:06At eight, Drab's guy from Arizona State, Jordan Tyson, goes to the Saints.
07:11Hey, you know what?
07:12Drab kind of likes that.
07:12Drab loves.
07:13He loves the city of New Orleans.
07:15And now his guy, Jordan Tyson, playing for the Saints with, you know what?
07:19Tyler Shuck.
07:20He's got some good receivers.
07:21Kind of a surprising, you know, emergence last year.
07:24And now you add another weapon to Chris Alave.
07:27Yep.
07:28I kind of like it.
07:30Last year, the Raiders were my number two team.
07:32Yeah.
07:33Now it's the Saints.
07:34It's definitely the Saints because also, their head coach is Kellen Moore from my hometown.
07:38That's true.
07:39That's a very good point.
07:40That's nice.
07:40Forgot about that connection, too.
07:42He's from Spokane?
07:43He's from Prosser, Washington, which is right outside Richland, Washington, which is my hometown.
07:48Ah, very good.
07:49And Tyson was very emotional.
07:51Did you see when he was—
07:53I think I was driving when he got picked.
07:54I didn't see his response.
07:56All right, so he dropped to his knees walking down that corridor, that hallway, right?
08:00Puts on the hat.
08:01And then when he came out on the stage before he hugs Roger Goodell, he was crying.
08:06And there was a big thing of snot or something that came out of his nose or his mouth.
08:11A big snot bubble?
08:12I don't know if it was snot, but he was crying, so he was just—you know how when you get
08:17real emotional, everything rushes to your head.
08:19And did you notice that, Drabby?
08:21He had a big thing, a big glob of something that came out of his nose.
08:24I just saw the tears.
08:26Yeah, yeah.
08:27The terrifying guy.
08:28I'm thinking he's going to get that all over Goodell's suit.
08:30I'm skipping some picks here.
08:31When Reuben Bain got selected, he looked like he wanted to murder everyone.
08:37Like, his demeanor—and maybe that's unfair, but, like, he was just, like, businesslike.
08:44He's an intimidating guy.
08:45Well, he was hugging everybody in his family.
08:47And his family, they did a bit where they were all wearing, like, the same outfit.
08:51I don't know if you guys noticed that.
08:52I didn't see that.
08:52Like, all the same sort of suit.
08:53There was another player later where everybody wore white.
08:55And it just shouted, like, us-against-the-world mentality.
09:00Like, you saw how businesslike he was.
09:03Like, when the guys would get their hats, they would do this with their hats and look in the camera.
09:08Bain just walked by, swiped the hat off of the little stand that it was sitting on,
09:13and then he went out and hugged Roger Goodell.
09:15Like, he looked pissed that he fell all the way down to 15 to Tampa.
09:20Like, he expected to go top 10, he looks like he's going to be a game wrecker.
09:27He looked super pissed and intense last night.
09:30I was surprised he slipped to 15.
09:32I would have bet that he would have gone inside the top 15.
09:35Yeah, I would have thought Dallas might have taken him where Downs went.
09:38Coming up later in the program, we're going to check in with Steve Zavin.
09:42We'll talk to Zabe at 725, get his take on what the Commanders did.
09:46Chris Russell, the rooster, jumps on at 825 with the junkies.
09:51Keep it here on the fan.
