00:01This week on The Fish Guys.
00:03What's our plan to catch these sharks, Lane?
00:05Well, we're going to use the small bait to catch a bigger bait,
00:08and we're going to use that in the sharks.
00:09Yep, I reckon we're tight.
00:11Got a bite, Earl!
00:12I noticed when the rod got bit, you were nowhere to be found, man.
00:15I'm working hard back here.
00:17What you got? A little black chip?
00:18And they say we can't catch fish without Chris.
00:20Who needs Chris?
00:21Oh, my God!
00:22Whoa! What is it, Earl?
00:24It's a dinosaur!
00:25Oh, my God!
00:26This is the closest thing to a megalodon we could have caught.
00:28All jokes aside.
00:45Right here, right here, right here!
00:46Off the bow, off the bow!
00:47Oh, fish on!
00:49Oh, Chris is on!
00:50Imagine that!
00:50Let's go!
00:51Double up!
00:52Double up!
00:53Oh, look at him!
00:53Look, look, look, look!
00:54That's him!
00:54Oh, he's eating right now.
00:55Oh, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho!
00:57I love it where the plan comes together.
00:58I love it where the plan comes together.
01:01Yo, this that island vibration.
01:04Take a deep breath of that island air.
01:08And it's just good vibes only.
01:11The life we're living.
01:13In this place we've been given.
01:16No negativity.
01:19Just positive vibrations.
01:24Oh, hey, Earl.
01:26Hey, what's up, Lane?
01:28Let me get, like, five more minutes, man.
01:29Sure.
01:32The guys are anchored in the beautiful turquoise waters of Isla Morata at a deep hole among
01:38the patch reefs.
01:39It's the kind of morning made for getting up and at them, at least for Lane.
01:45They say the early bird gets the worm, but Earl has his sights set a little higher than
01:51breakfast, knowing a wive well full of pilchards endures his slumber.
02:06Oh, hey, morning, Earl.
02:07Hey, what's up, Lane?
02:08I guess it's hard to be late when you sleep on the boat.
02:10You don't have to get ready if you're already ready already.
02:13Well, that's good.
02:13I'm glad you're ready.
02:14What are we going to do today?
02:15We're going to do some shark fishing.
02:16I've been getting a bunch of emails from people asking us to catch some sharks.
02:19You know, we've got some big sharks down here in the Keys, so I said, you know what?
02:23We'll do that.
02:23We're going to do a little shark fishing today, Earl.
02:25Think we can do it?
02:26I think we're going to try.
02:27Okay.
02:28All right.
02:28You twisting up some wire over there?
02:29You good?
02:30Shower anything?
02:31Some deodorant?
02:31Nothing?
02:32You good?
02:32No.
02:33Yeah, no, we're good.
02:34Let's get into it.
02:35Let's go.
02:35I'm twisting up the wire.
02:36You threaten me with a good time.
02:40What's our plan to catch these sharks, Lane?
02:42Well, we're going to use the small bait to catch a bigger bait, and we're going to use
02:45that, cut it up, drop down on the bottom for them sharks.
02:48What kind of sharks have we got swimming out here, man?
02:49Ooh.
02:51Lemons.
02:53Bulls.
02:54Occasional hammerhead, even, I believe.
02:56Okay.
02:56Some real man-eaters.
02:57Yeah.
02:58So we're mostly surrounded by patch reefs out here.
03:00We're not too far offshore.
03:01Yeah, exactly.
03:02We're inside the main reef.
03:04Nothing crazy.
03:05Talk me through what we're doing by butterflying it.
03:07So I basically took his tail and his backbone out, Earl.
03:10That's going to sit down there and just kind of flop around on the bottom.
03:14That tail, or the lack of tail, will keep it from spinning.
03:19Just send that out straight back and send it to the bottom.
03:22All right.
03:23I'm going to catch you another one.
03:24Hopefully I don't disturb your fishing.
03:26I don't think so, man.
03:27I'll get the top, you get the bottom.
03:42Lane, you're getting a bite, I think, Bubba.
03:45Yeah.
03:46I think you got a bite, huh?
03:47Let's find out.
03:51That's a circle hook, Earl.
03:52It's a circle hook?
03:53Circle hook.
03:54I like circle hooks.
03:55I think you got a bite, huh?
03:56Let's find out.
04:02Yeah, it appears to be swimming away with it.
04:05Give it a little bit with the circle here.
04:12Yep, I reckon we're tight.
04:15Got a bite, Earl.
04:22We got this on the old spinning reel, man, keeping it sporty.
04:25Yeah, why not, huh?
04:28Lane, I noticed when the rod got bit, you were nowhere to be found, man.
04:31Is that a coincidence or a veteran move?
04:35No, that was just coincidence.
04:36You were kind of closer to it.
04:38Thought it would be good for you.
04:39Good for me.
04:40All right.
04:41I'd say when you get it within about maybe, you know, 20, 30 feet of the boat, just let me
04:45know and I'll help you out.
04:45Good day.
04:46Teamwork makes the dream work, right?
04:48Yeah.
04:48I'm working hard back here.
04:50You got to stay hydrated, Earl.
04:52Yeah.
04:52Start to sweat a little bit out here.
04:53Yeah, you look good.
04:54That Gatorade looks pretty tasty, man.
04:55Pay attention to what you got to do over there.
04:57We're locked in.
04:58And they say we can't catch fish without Chris.
05:01Yeah.
05:02Who needs Chris?
05:03Got any color yet?
05:04You seeing anything?
05:05Oh, it's definitely a shark.
05:07Doing a great job, Earl.
05:08Just glad it's you and not me.
05:10What you got?
05:11A little black chip.
05:13I think I offended him calling him little.
05:16People underestimate the speed of a shark, huh?
05:18And the sharks tend to underestimate the speed of a bird.
05:22That's the truth.
05:23How we doing, Earl?
05:24We're getting him, Bubba.
05:25He's slowing down a little bit.
05:27Woo!
05:28Bring him right to you, Bubba.
05:30To the window.
05:32To the wall.
05:33Hooked in the jaw.
05:35Right in the corner.
05:36We've got him pretty well subdued here.
05:38I'm going to try to get that hook out of him.
05:45I'm impressed.
05:46You got that done.
05:49Let's go.
05:49Good job, boy.
05:52We're good.
05:53I got all ten, bro.
05:54Looking good.
05:55That was awesome.
05:56I think you need to catch another one.
05:57Another one?
05:58Another one.
05:59Come on.
05:59We got it.
06:07The Fish Guys is brought to you by Isla Murata in the Florida Keys.
06:14The Nature Conservancy, partnering with anglers to keep fisheries abundant for generations to come.
06:20Jefferson's bourbon.
06:22Jefferson's bourbon, crafted with precision and aged with innovation.
06:27Contender, legendary sport fishing boats.
06:31Power pole shallow water anchor, swift, silent, secure.
06:41Good?
06:42Yes, sir.
06:43I got you.
06:44Let's let her go.
06:47It's a pretty good system we got here, Earl.
06:50What's that?
06:50It's a pretty good system we got here, Earl.
06:52I cast this thing out there, set it in a rod holder, and you bring it back to the boat.
06:56It's definitely working out for one of us.
06:58You can't argue results.
07:00Nope, you can't.
07:01I'll give you that.
07:08Getting bit.
07:10Getting bit?
07:11Mm-hmm.
07:14Let's put the hook nice and slow.
07:16Got a bite?
07:17Yes, sir.
07:19Oh, you got a shark on there, Earl.
07:21I almost stepped up, buddy.
07:22So, Earl, if you had to guess, I mean, black tip, lemon, bull, dusky, great white.
07:29I would get, like, I'm leaning Megalodon.
07:32Megalodon?
07:32Wow.
07:33Megalodon.
07:33Go big, go home.
07:34Big teeth?
07:35Yeah, yeah, yeah.
07:36It ain't happy, whatever it is.
07:38Quite a bend in your rod there, man.
07:39You got a lot of bend in the rod.
07:42We're going to let the fish fight the rod for a minute here.
07:44Just digging down and dirty, huh?
07:47Down and dirty.
07:48Giving that old rod a workout, Earl.
07:50Yeah, we're going to find out what the old pin carnage got.
07:53Crank down, pull back on that old pin reel, keep the line tight.
07:57If you want to seal the deal, stay focused.
08:01There's a moss about to surface.
08:03This is what happens when you fish with purpose.
08:07Might have brought a frickin' knife to a gunfight here, Earl.
08:10Tell you what.
08:11Oh, that's, there you go.
08:13That's getting a little ground.
08:14Get him, Earl.
08:15Get him in the business.
08:16I don't want to give it too much.
08:17I saw those haywire twists you put in this thing.
08:20I'd be gentle, gentle on the pressure.
08:24I would go past moderate on the amount of pressure you put on this fish.
08:27Come on, Bubba.
08:29How you feeling? You good?
08:31Oh, absolutely.
08:32Look good, feel good.
08:33Getting some good pulls there, Earl.
08:35We trying, man.
08:36Lane, I'm getting the mono here.
08:38I don't know how much mono-meter you got.
08:39Yeah, we got a lot of mono.
08:40We just want to make sure that knot gets in that rod tip nicely.
08:43Yeah.
08:43Try and get her on there here.
08:45A little break.
08:46There it is.
08:47Probably ought to get a little color here soon.
08:49Oh my, yo!
08:50Whoa!
08:51What is it, Earl?
08:52It's a dinosaur!
08:53Oh my God.
08:54This is the closest thing to a megalodon we could have caught.
08:56All jokes aside.
08:58Earl, you know what that is, huh?
09:00Is that a sawfish?
09:00That is a sawfish, dude.
09:02I've never caught one of these.
09:03Check that out.
09:04That's prehistoric.
09:09Oh my goodness, Earl.
09:12I see the many battle scars from every fight.
09:16This fish has won so far.
09:19Easy now, keep her in the flow.
09:22Hands, take home, let the drag go.
09:24What do you think, Earl?
09:25Give me a guess on size.
09:27I don't have the foggiest idea, Lane.
09:29That's a big animal.
09:30It's a 26-foot contender.
09:32I'm saying that's every bit of 13, 14 feet, huh?
09:35This is unbelievable.
09:36I've caught a lot of things in my life, Lane.
09:38I ain't never seen one of these in person.
09:40There's not a lot of them around.
09:41They're one of the most endangered species of fish we have.
09:44This is unbelievable.
09:45I don't know what's crazier, catching a sawfish or watching Lane Billy.
09:49What am I supposed to do with this?
09:50I have no idea.
09:51This is a 12, 14-foot fish, and I can only grab an inch and a half on his nose.
09:56That's like a weapon.
09:58That thing is...
09:58That is a weapon.
09:59I'm trying to get this untangled.
10:03There you go.
10:03We got some progress there.
10:04Yeah.
10:07Those are teeth?
10:08Yeah, and they're mighty sharp, Earl.
10:11I'd hate to be this guy's dentist.
10:13We got to be careful with this guy.
10:14These things are highly endangered.
10:16This feels like one of those species that you can't even target.
10:19No, no, no.
10:20These things are unicorns.
10:22We don't want to target these fish.
10:24They are bycatch sometimes.
10:40Good to go.
10:41Right back to the bottom.
10:42Woo-hoo!
10:43Good job, Earl!
10:44Let's go!
10:46Wow.
10:47Checked one off my fish bucket list.
10:49There's no telling.
10:50Come out of here, shark fish.
10:51Are we 12, maybe 14, 15-foot?
10:54Who knows how big that sawfish was?
10:56I don't know if I'm just out of breath or out of words, but I don't really know what
10:59to say.
11:00Like, that was...
11:00That's a rare, rare occasion.
11:03That was special.
11:03That was special.
11:05That's awesome, man.
11:06Well, we'll try to actually catch a shark now, huh?
11:08Yeah.
11:08Yeah.
11:09You're gonna have to reel that one in, though.
11:13I'm tired.
11:13I'm tired.
11:14Well, I'm tired.
11:18You know, I've a beelerin heart.
11:23The beautiful scenery and abundant marine life of the Florida Keys are sources of inspiration
11:29for many artists.
11:31Located in the heart of Isla Murata, Jessica Ann Art features work from local artists and a variety of home
11:39decor.
11:40Jessica and her husband Chris also run Isla Murata Candle Company, where they make clean-burning, small-batch candles with
11:49tropical scents inspired by the Keys.
11:52Left alone for the next pour, there's no telling what scent the guys will come up with next.
12:00Smells good, yeah. Smells like success.
12:03Alright. Hey, when Chris doesn't know it doesn't hurt him.
12:06That's right, man.
12:07What are we doing here, man?
12:09We're going to make some candles.
12:10I got this one here.
12:11There's fishing doors in there.
12:12Yeah, yeah, because, I mean, that's what we do, man.
12:16Things are going to be awesome.
12:18I'm good, I'm good with that. Let's go, let's go.
12:20Let's fill that sucker up.
12:21Hurry up, before it comes back.
12:22How much wax do I put in here?
12:26Just keep going.
12:27Is that good?
12:27Yeah.
12:28Is that enough wax, you think?
12:29Yeah, I mean, I would, yeah, keep it going.
12:32Wow.
12:32Dude, that's perfect.
12:34Hey, that's a piece of work right there, huh?
12:36Dude, he's going to like this one.
12:38That is cool.
12:38I think he's going to like this one a lot.
12:39Can I make one?
12:40I'm going to make one.
12:41The lures look good in this one.
12:43What do you got in that one, bud?
12:43I think we did a good job, man.
12:46Is that?
12:46I made a cool, I've never seen a candle like that.
12:49It looks just like my phone, Lane.
12:51It'd be good, huh?
12:52Yeah, we got two signature scents, Chris.
12:53We got fish fingers and apple.
12:56Uh, no, you know, I don't know where those fingers have been, you know, and we don't
13:02carry the apple scent here.
13:03You guys can go ahead and take these and I will go ahead and finish these up.
13:08When do you want us to come back?
13:09Uh, I'm free tomorrow.
13:11I'd come help him tomorrow.
13:12Don't worry about that.
13:13You sure?
13:14Don't worry about that.
13:14We good?
13:14Yeah, we're good.
13:15We're good.
13:16Fair enough, man.
13:17All right, bro.
13:17I'll see you tonight, man.
13:19See you tonight.
13:19Thanks, Lane.
13:20Make sure he comes with you.
13:23Yeah, yeah.
13:24I'm sorry about that.
13:25That was good.
13:25Hey, thanks again, Chris.
13:27What's up, man?
13:27Hello?
13:28We did a good...
13:28Oh, sorry, I didn't realize you were on the phone.
13:31Hey, Lane, you see my keys anywhere?
13:33No, you don't have your keys?
13:35I don't know.
13:35Anyway.
13:37No?
13:37I'm sure there's something.
13:38Let's go.
13:38We'll figure it out.
13:43The guys are just offshore of Isla Mirada, where a day of shark fishing has taken an unexpected
13:49turn with the catch of a rare small-tooth sawfish.
13:54I've caught a lot of stuff.
13:56I've never caught a sawfish.
13:57I've never seen a sawfish in person.
13:59Look, a fish, you can't target, but we do catch them accidentally, obviously.
14:04We're shark fishing.
14:04We caught one.
14:05And from what I understand, we only have small-tooth sawfish in Florida waters nowadays.
14:12Highly endangered.
14:13We're going to report that fish, too.
14:14There's flyers up at all the tackle shops.
14:16You catch one, you report it.
14:18They have a database.
14:18They can track them.
14:19Very highly endangered species.
14:21Best thing is, handle them with care.
14:23We got the line unwrapped from them.
14:25Cut the leader as close as we could to the hook.
14:27Fish swam away safely.
14:29Should we catch another one?
14:30Well, we can't target the sawfish, but we're shark fishing, so let's catch a shark.
14:34Okay.
14:35Or try to catch a shark.
14:36Let's do it.
14:37You good?
14:37You ready?
14:38I'll butterfly you a bait and get you out there and get you ready to catch another one.
14:41Why don't...
14:41Well, you...
14:42Couldn't you reel one in?
14:44No, no, no, you're good.
14:45You're good.
14:45It's good.
14:45It's all about you, Earl.
14:47It's all about you, man.
14:48Just one?
14:48I want you to have a good time, buddy.
14:50Alright.
14:51This is your day.
14:51It's Earl Day.
14:52Somebody got to do the heavy lifting, I guess.
14:53It's Earl Day.
15:07My bait's getting nervous.
15:11Yeah.
15:12Got a bite?
15:12I got a bite on the wrong side of the boat.
15:15Hey, well, guess what?
15:16I can fix that.
15:17I can fix that.
15:19Uh-oh.
15:20Clear?
15:21No.
15:22No?
15:23No.
15:23What can I do to help?
15:24I don't know.
15:25Are you around the trolling motor?
15:27Uh-uh.
15:27I'm in between it.
15:28In between it?
15:28Alright.
15:29Hold on.
15:29Hold on.
15:29Watch the prop if you can.
15:31Yeah, I'm high.
15:34Uh-oh.
15:35Alright, we got it.
15:36We got it.
15:37We got it.
15:38We don't know.
15:39We broke them.
15:39Lost them.
15:39Got them?
15:41Got a fish on it?
15:42I don't think we did.
15:42Talk to me, Earl.
15:44I think we got a fish on it.
15:45I think we got a fish on it.
15:46We're back.
15:47Good job.
15:48Good work.
15:49I should have maybe moved that bait earlier.
15:52No, that's alright.
15:53Kind of knew I was in the bad spot.
15:54What you got, Earl?
15:56Um, I'm expecting it to be a shark, man.
15:59It's a big bait.
16:00I mean, a grouper could eat a bait that big,
16:01but it's not doing grouper things.
16:03Looks like you got him coming in the right direction.
16:05I think we got his head turned a little bit.
16:08Here's our mono.
16:10Oh, my goodness.
16:12Oh, what the way?
16:21The Fish Guys is brought to you by Isla Murata in the Florida Keys.
16:27The Nature Conservancy, partnering with anglers to keep fisheries abundant for generations to come.
16:34Berkeley, your fish, our science.
16:38Booyah Clean, EPA safer choice and direct release marine cleaning products.
16:44Nick Mayer Art, committed to conservation.
16:51What you got, Earl?
16:52Um, I'm expecting it to be a shark, man.
16:55It's a big bait.
16:56Here's our mono.
16:58Oh, my goodness.
16:59Oh, what?
17:00No way!
17:02A sawfish!
17:03We catching two of them?
17:05Where did you take me, Ray?
17:06Oh, my goodness.
17:07We're in the land of dinosaurs, brother.
17:09Obviously, something going on here with these sawfish, Earl.
17:12This is wild, brother.
17:14Look at that.
17:15That is awesome.
17:17That is awesome.
17:19Woo!
17:20Hey, be careful, buddy.
17:21I'm trying, buddy.
17:22I'm trying.
17:23All right, guys.
17:24I'm going to break him off right at the base of the hook.
17:28And he's going to swim away.
17:30Good to go, Earl.
17:32Do you do lightning strikes twice?
17:33Twice, Earl.
17:34Twice.
17:34Let's go.
17:35Too sawfish, man.
17:37I feel like we probably ought to move spots.
17:39Yeah, I agree.
17:41Unbelievable.
17:41Yeah.
17:42Not many places in this world you can catch them, but obviously, this spot, they're sitting
17:46in this hole for some reason, which I'd normally call a shark hole.
17:49But now that we've caught two sawfish, let's call it a day, man.
17:53It's been a great day, huh?
17:54Call it the sawfish hole.
17:55Call it the sawfish hole.
17:56We'll go do the reporting when we get back on the computer.
18:00Let's get some water going.
18:01All right, we can eat.
18:01Let's go.
18:06A great day fishing ends in the kitchen.
18:09And that's where professional chef Kat Pfeiffer joins the guys to share some of her favorite
18:15seafood creations.
18:17Today's recipe is a delectable shrimp primavera.
18:21Lots of vegetables to get in both of these tummies, guys.
18:23I like veggies.
18:25I like shrimp.
18:26Hey, I think we could do this, Earl.
18:27We got this, Kat.
18:28Absolutely.
18:28Absolutely.
18:29So to start, we're going to put olive oil in this pan.
18:32It's already heated, and then you're going to sear your shrimp.
18:35So now you're going to take your tongs right there.
18:37Just make sure they work.
18:38Uh-huh.
18:39They're on.
18:39They do.
18:40Click status.
18:41So you want to just get a little color on each side, so then you're going to flip them
18:45after about one minute.
18:46You don't want to overcook your shrimp, though, but do you see how the shrimp will start to
18:50go into a closed sea?
18:52That's a good way to know whenever the shrimp is just about done.
18:54So, Justin, I want you to take the plate now and just, you're going to put them each on
18:58a plate, and then we have that nice oil and the shrimp juice and seasoning, and we're
19:03next going to throw in all of our vegetables to saute.
19:07Now, Lane, we're going to get ready with our heavy cream here and our Parmesan next.
19:12Okay.
19:12Right on the veggies.
19:13They're off to the side.
19:14Right.
19:14Just go on right in there.
19:15Go right up in the veggies.
19:17There you go.
19:18All of it up in there.
19:20Perfect.
19:20Now, Earl, I would like you to add our shrimp back in, please, and then Lane.
19:24You're going to add that pasta.
19:26This is a beautiful dish.
19:28You guys killed it.
19:29I am so proud, and it smells even better.
19:32Amazing, Kat.
19:32Absolutely amazing.
19:34All right, Kat.
19:35How do we get into this?
19:35Well, don't forget to twirl.
19:38The pasta, Earl.
19:40This guy.
19:41The pasta.
19:42Not physically twirling.
19:43I didn't know how it was going to help, but I'm listening to Kat's directions, okay?
19:46I like it.
19:49Mmm.
19:51That is absolutely decadent.
19:53Mmm.
19:54You cook the shrimp perfectly.
19:56Kat.
19:57Flavors out of this world.
19:58Incredible amount of flavors.
20:00Insanely good.
20:02Shrimp is cooked to perfection, Earl.
20:04Perfection.
20:05Super easy.
