00:00We want to learn how to calm the nervous system in order to calm down your pelvic floor.
00:04Hi, I'm Dr. Alexa Charbonneau, Doctor of Physical Therapy, and I'm here to teach you guys about
00:09something you might not know about your nervous system. Now, we all know about the vagus nerve,
00:12right? The vagus nerve is so talked about all over YouTube, Instagram, TikTok. We know that
00:17that is the nerve in your parasympathetic nervous system, right? Which is your rest and digest.
00:22We can stimulate to calm the nervous system. We want to learn how to calm the nervous system
00:27in order to calm down your pelvic floor. I work in pelvic health, and I see patients all the time
00:33who are very upregulated, and that affects their pelvic floor. When your nervous system is out of
00:38whack and you're always at that high fight or flight, your muscles and your pelvic floor literally have
00:43those receptors in them to respond to that, right? So we need to work on calming that system. There's
00:49one piece of this that we're missing, and that is the vagus nerve of the pelvis, which are called
00:53your pelvic splanchnic nerves. Those nerves come out kind of right here near your sacrum,
00:58and we can stimulate them to help calm the nervous system and calm the pelvis specifically,
01:03right? So things like not being able to have a bowel movement, not being able to relax enough
01:07to let out urine or let out gas. These are things we see all the time in the pelvic world.
01:11So if we can
01:12teach you how to stimulate these things, it's going to help so much with getting you to eliminate bowel
01:17and bladder, calm your pelvic floor, decrease your spasms, and so much more. I'm going to show you
01:21guys one quick technique you can do to help stimulate these nerves. We have two options for
01:26this. One, you can use your own hands and lay on your own hands. And two, you can actually use
01:31a
01:31little tool that we call a Franklin ball that looks just like this. And we have this linked in our
01:36Amazon store for you to go buy if you like this, right? We use this all the time in the
01:40clinic.
01:40It's very soft and it inflates really well. So when you lay on it, it's very comfortable. I'm going to
01:45show you both options. So we're using our triangle hands. I'm going to separate them just so I can get
01:51it here. We're going to go underneath the sacrum and we're going to lay right on down onto those
01:56hands, right? So if you can see underneath right here, there's my triangle under the sacrum. Now
02:02I can move, I can rock forward and back. I can go side to side, right? Whatever movement feels good.
02:11I can move my pelvis as my hands are laying here to stimulate the nerves. Now, another option I'm going
02:17to get rid of my hands there would be to use this Franklin ball. Like I said, it's kind of
02:20nice
02:21because the air in here, when you're laying on it, gives you just a little bit of a bonus layer
02:25of
02:25release. So I'm going to go ahead and bridge up again, get that Franklin ball right under my lowest
02:29part of my low back. As you can see there, come on down, lay on it and just feel that
02:35lightness and
02:36airiness from that ball hitting my sacrum. Same thing. I can rock back and forth. I can do circles,
02:44anything that feels good, any movement that feels good. And we're stimulating those nerves as we speak
02:50to calm those nerves. Give us a like, give us a follow, give us a subscribe. We're so excited
02:57to share this information with you and we hope this helps you calm your nervous system.
