00:00I pulled it off baby
00:02What's up much music? It's Georgia and I'm here joined today in the studio with the stars of heated rivalry
00:07You're an awesome player to watch
00:09Yes
00:11Very good at hockey
00:12The best probably
00:14We've seen each other a lot
00:16Yeah, Boston and Montreal play against each other often
00:20Roz, you gotta see this
00:22He's like a huge movie star
00:23Are there any gay hockey players?
00:27None that have said it publicly
00:32The new crave hockey romance drama based on best-selling book series Game Changers by Rachel Reid
00:38Connor Story, Hudson Williams, welcome, how's it going?
00:41Good, good, good
00:42We're just gonna talk at the same time
00:44The whole time
00:45It's so nice to be here
00:48Wow, you guys are in such sync, I love it
00:50I would love to get to know you guys a little bit more
00:52Obviously the audience knows you guys as Shane Hollander and Ilya Rosanoff
00:55But for you two, let's do a little icebreaker, you know, break the ice
01:01Break the ice with the puck and the stick
01:03Exactly
01:04Okay, love it
01:05Well between the two of you I would love to
01:07You guys are good
01:08This is good
01:09So between the two of you, who is the most likely to start a fight on the ice?
01:13If you were actually a hockey player?
01:14Hudson
01:14Yeah, that's how I would play
01:16I don't think I'd be focused on the puck
01:17I'd just punch people, hit people, and just kind of
01:21And he's an actual athlete too, like basketball
01:23Is it MMA or UFC?
01:25UFC is the
01:27Is the
01:28Is the
01:29Is the NBA
01:29Yes, yes, correct
01:30Is basketball
01:31But you're an MMA fighter?
01:33Yeah, I grew up MMA fighting and boxing
01:35That's crazy
01:36And then I got too many concussions
01:37So he's dangerous
01:38But how about yourself?
01:39You're not so dangerous
01:40No, I cry a lot
01:41So I'm less dangerous
01:42A dangerous artist
01:43I was a gymnast growing up
01:45So was I
01:46Oh, no way
01:46Stop
01:47Yeah, I'm from West Texas, so that was a big thing where I grew up
01:50Obviously, it's not connection to the show, but like the Russian side of it
01:54Yeah, right?
01:54That's a very gymnast thing
01:55Totally, and I think that's kind of where maybe I'm able to access that
01:58Is kind of that like stoic, you know, execute, execute, control thing
02:03Absolutely
02:03Is very much gymnastics
02:05Okay, I love it
02:06Well, I like that it's kind of opposite because, you know, obviously from the show
02:09You would think you're the one who's more scrappy, but I guess
02:12Shane wouldn't do that, Shane wouldn't punch
02:13Yeah
02:13Yeah, the more you learn about us, the more you realize that I'm actually probably more Shane in real life
02:18And you're actually more Ilya in real life
02:20To some degrees, yeah
02:21To some degree, I love it
02:22Well, we'll chat about that later
02:24But between you guys, who's the most likely to forget a line?
02:27Mmm, we were both pretty good
02:28Like I was surprised by this show at the lack of anyone
02:31You know, usually on a show it's line, line
02:34And every actor's doing that on this show
02:36It was like people are dialed in
02:37Yeah, I feel like you're more word perfect than I am
02:39But also like for depending on the timeline
02:42Yeah
02:43Ilya's English is kind of not always the best
02:45Yeah
02:45So it's a little bit easier to remember like
02:47I want you here now
02:50Rather than
02:51I wish you were here now with me
02:53Yeah, the exact wording
02:55You kind of wing it a little bit
02:56Yeah, so I think I had a little bit more freedom with how word perfect I could be
03:00But then when it came to the Russian, definitely not
03:01Yeah
03:02That was crazy
03:03Are you Russian though?
03:04I'm not, no
03:05What?
03:06Yeah
03:06You like look Russian
03:07That's what everyone says
03:09But when I see Russians, I'm like
03:11I'm like anyone who's heard me talk about this knows that when I read this I was like
03:14It's not gonna be me
03:15Your execution's amazing
03:17Cool, I love it
03:17I love it
03:18I pulled it off, baby
03:20You did
03:21Who's most likely to break character laughing?
03:24Me
03:24Did you guys have any of those moments?
03:25Yeah, because you make me laugh
03:27You would go off script
03:28That's the not word perfect thing
03:30Yeah
03:31That you do
03:31But it would be because Ilya is such a charming character
03:34Right
03:34And you played him so well
03:35When he takes his liberties
03:36He was always slapping me
03:38Was a choice he always sort of
03:40Like roughhousing
03:40Utilized
03:41But also I think that that also comes down to our characters
03:43Like since I am a little bit more free
03:45Or make a little bit more jokes
03:46Like you have to
03:48It makes more sense that you would break character
03:50Because you have more of that character that would break
03:52Who's most likely to initiate a secret crush?
03:55What do you mean initiate?
03:55Initiate
03:56If you're falling for someone, you would just go for it
03:58Mmm
03:59Hudson's more of a romantic than I am
04:01Like more forward
04:01Yeah, I might just shoot it
04:03Yeah, like shoot your shot basically
04:04Yeah, yeah
04:04Yeah, not me
04:05No
04:06I'm like, hey
04:07Like you wait for the other person to make it
04:08I'm like, well, I don't even know if I'd wait for the other
04:10I kind of just don't even
04:12Just kind of like, hey
04:13You'd be like, they don't like me
04:13They don't like me
04:14They said I love you, Connor
04:15I'm like, no, no, no
04:17Who's that?
04:18Uh, don't, don't know him
04:20Yeah
04:20But you're shooting your shot
04:22Yeah, I guess
04:23Just shoot from the hip
04:23And just shoot
04:24From the hip
04:27That's the headline
04:27Yeah
04:29Who's most likely to arrive late on set?
04:31I feel like we would swap pickup times
04:33Like some, like we would always get picked up
04:34Usually at the same time
04:35Sometimes I would be the last one to the car
04:38And sometimes you would be the last one to the car
04:39But also it's kind of like, it's really hard
04:41Because you have people telling you where you have to go
04:43When you have to go
04:44So I mean, we can't, neither of us can really
04:46Show up late
04:48You have to really
04:49You have to really
04:49You have to really go through some hoops
04:51To mess up the schedule
04:53To mess up the schedule
04:54You have to be like a purposeful little bit of a
04:55Yeah
04:55Who takes the most time to get ready?
04:58Longest
04:58Hudson
04:58Yeah
04:59That was quick
05:00Hudson has like a ten piece
05:02I like my Korean skincare
05:03Every Christmas my auntie gives me a whole
05:06Two Ziploc bags full of very expensive skincare
05:09Drop the skincare routine
05:09Yeah
05:11It's obnoxious
05:12Is it lengthy?
05:13No
05:13It's like five steps
05:15Five steps
05:16We were at the airport the other day
05:17And he got stopped in security
05:20And he was like
05:20There's something in your bag
05:21I hated that guy
05:22And then he was like
05:23There's something in your bag
05:24And then he pulls out two gallon Ziploc bags
05:26Full of skincare
05:28And they like opened it
05:29And were like looking
05:30And like shaking
05:31Piece of condescending garbage
05:33Did they throw it?
05:34Was just looking at me kind of like
05:35They're all under 100 milliliters
05:37He's just holding it
05:38I'm sorry
05:39He's holding my Cossacks
05:40And then he's holding my
05:41Goddamn
05:42And I was like yeah
05:43He kept looking at me
05:44You do have great skin though
05:46He's got great skin
05:47Yeah
05:47I said you should take that
05:49And he still had the audacity to judge me
05:51So that man is
05:52Trust me
05:52If I see him again
05:53He was taking notes
05:54It was admiration
05:55And lastly
05:55Who's the most competitive out of you two?
05:57For real
05:57You're competitive in your own way
05:59Yeah I'm competitive
05:59The thing is is I'm not a good sport
06:01Which is really sad
06:02So I don't win
06:04I'm a bad sport as well
06:06I just kind of shut down
06:06I want really really badly to do really well
06:09And if I don't I get really embarrassed
06:11Yeah
06:12But this was a really good exercise
06:13Because there's no way you can be perfect at
06:15You know Olympic level hockey
06:18And be a fluent Russian speaker
06:20And do all that?
06:21Well you fooled me because I thought you were Russian
06:23There we go
06:24And your skating looks amazing
06:25That's all I needed to hear
06:26And what drew you both to this like romance rivalry story?
06:29What made you want to bring it to life?
06:31Considering it was like it's a book adaptation
06:33For me it was Jacob's writing
06:35And then later finding out about Rachel's book
06:38Yeah
06:38And the heart of it all
06:39It was very alluring
06:41And yeah
06:43But Jacob is just such a brilliant writer and director
06:46And I just wanted to work with him
06:48And I wanted to play this character
06:49Because I thought he was really beautiful
06:51Yeah for me I think that the characters are just really cool
06:53I mean Russian bisexual professional hockey player
06:58And if you read the books or watch the show
07:00His family dynamics are really crazy
07:02There's just a lot there to play with you know
07:05And it's really easy to make that like a real person
07:07Totally
07:07Rather than just this idea of a character
07:09For sure
07:10So I was like I love it
07:11And also like hockey is so culturally out of
07:14Of course
07:15What I've ever known
07:15Yeah
07:16And so it's so fun to go to a new place
07:18Also coming to Canada was really cool
07:20Yeah
07:20I had never been to Canada before this
07:21How do you find it?
07:22I love it
07:23I actually kind of want to spend a solid amount of time in Toronto
07:25Especially you know
07:26You've got to experience a winter here
07:28I know
07:28Brutal but it's
07:29We were just in Quebec
07:30And that was like
07:31Way colder
07:32It was so good
07:33We were just in Quebec
07:34Yeah
07:37You could fool me for any
07:39There we go
07:40He's a linguist
07:41Love it
07:42And what would you guys say to those who are fans of the book
07:44Like what are the main differences between the show and the book?
07:48I was just talking to Jacob about this
07:50But I feel like he has made some of the elements in a way kind of
07:55Or the story a little bit uglier in a way
07:58But like in a good way
07:59It's just a little bit more
08:00It's a good description
08:01They're not as justified
08:02Or you know
08:03You kind of have to read into it
08:04Yeah
08:05They're not as like spoon fed as these
08:07As much
08:08I mean there's like really small aesthetic things that are different
08:11But those don't really affect the story at all
08:13Yeah
08:13I think that they dive a little bit deeper into our characters individually
08:18In their personal life
08:20You know
08:20Like we understand
08:21We see a lot of Yuna
08:22Yeah
08:23With Shane's
08:23Yuna is Shane's mom
08:25More Stetlana and Rose
08:26Yeah we get a lot more
08:29We get a lot more interaction between the people outside of their dynamics
08:32Cool
08:32And I think that kind of justifies why they show up in the way that they do
08:35Yeah
08:36Like context
08:37Yeah totally
08:38And did you guys
08:39In what ways did you guys relate to your characters?
08:43I don't relate much with Shane
08:45Yeah
08:45I wish I like
08:46I'm attracted to his sort of earnesty
08:48Yeah
08:49That he has
08:49And we're both half Asian
08:51And he deals with that in the hockey world
08:54And that becomes quite a thing he has to wrestle with
08:57Sure
08:57And I had to deal with it a little bit in the acting world
09:00And so that one
09:01That was one of the tethers I could kind of see myself
09:04Yeah I think that both of these characters kind of live outside of the box
09:09And feel like
09:09I think this is something that I think a lot of people
09:12No matter what community you're a part of
09:14Can relate to
09:15And I think why this is so special among so many different groups
09:20Feeling like I am one thing
09:22And I need to be seen as one thing
09:26I think a lot of people can just understand the idea of like
09:29I should be this way
09:31Totally
09:31People want me to show up this way
09:32Totally
09:32But that's not natural to me
09:33Yeah
09:34And that's kind of what they grapple with the entire time
09:36Yeah
09:36Is what's expected of me
09:37And what do I actually want to see for myself
09:39Absolutely
09:40And just based on the book as well
09:42Rachel Reid's book meant a lot to like the queer romance fans as well
09:46So why do you guys feel like that representation is so important
09:48Especially in the sports world and a sport like hockey
09:50Totally
09:51I feel like not just even the society's view
09:55But we were talking about this
09:57It's crazy to think that this show will come out
09:59And more shows like this hopefully
10:02And not just the social stigma around queerness
10:06But also like the individual person to person relations
10:10You know, because it's one thing to look at sports
10:12And how they deal with queerness
10:14And some of these toxic masculinity
10:16Totally
10:16But it's even more interesting for me to think about
10:19You know, friends on a team
10:22Maybe hearing or seeing stories like this
10:25And thinking on a more personal level of like
10:27What do I say in the locker room?
10:30You know, when I'm next to my friend
10:31What kind of words do I use to describe other people?
10:33I mean, it really just opens up these people on an individual basis
10:36To what other people are going through
10:39Yeah, hopefully it can make just empathy more accessible
10:42And increase the sort of language and aptitude
10:45People are able to sort of interrelate with these people
10:48That maybe on paper they don't feel like they have too many similarities
10:52And at the end of the day it's just
10:53They can be your friend, you can talk with them and joke with them
10:56Exactly
10:56It's not like they're a werewolf
10:59Yes
10:59Yeah, yeah
11:00It's just a consciousness
11:01Exactly
11:02Oh, beautiful guys
11:03And the story spans eight years
11:05So how are you guys able to make that relationship feel real across that timeline?
11:09That was hard
11:10That was super hard
11:11Because we bounced back and forth during the shooting so much
11:13And one day we would play possibly eight years
11:16Stop
11:16Yeah
11:17So
11:18Wow, mentally that's
11:19Yeah
11:19It was just trying to really keep track of it
11:21And also not get too lost into it
11:22Because as a viewer
11:23I think the context really drives that home
11:26Yeah
11:26You know?
11:26But it's so weird to one moment be 19
11:30And then the next scene be, you know, 24
11:32Tear down, take away your eye bags
11:34Put eye bags back
11:35Yeah
11:35And how we kind of tracked it was with the hair
11:37You know?
11:38Yeah
11:38Through the years we kind of change hair a little bit
11:41That's crazy
11:42To being like, oh, this is more of a pushback day
11:45Like, this is what I'm going through
11:46You know?
11:46I had a different walk
11:48Yeah
11:48I was trying to kind of change my shoulders throughout the years
11:50Wow
11:50It was my little thing
11:52We grew, so we had these huge insoles and shoes, you know?
11:56Yeah
11:57That went up by seven inches
11:58Not actually
11:58I was like, wait, actually?
12:00By the end of the shooting schedule we had seven inch platforms
12:03Yeah
12:04Okay, well how would you tap immensely to like the different ages?
12:06Because it is like, it's a big contrast
12:08I think you just think about contextually what is going on in my life
12:12Yeah
12:12There's some big moments for both of us
12:15With girlfriends that we have in the show
12:16With weird family dynamics that I have
12:20You know, anyone who's read the books
12:21Like, Ilya personally goes through a lot
12:23And so it's pretty easy to be like
12:24Oh, this episode
12:25This just happened to my dad
12:27Or this just happened with my brother
12:29You know?
12:30So that, it was a little easier for me
12:32Yeah
12:33I had my key sort of like timeline points
12:35And then I tried to have sort of like a
12:37Like an
12:39Almost like
12:39You know, what's that like
12:40Neanderthal becoming
12:41Right
12:42The evolution of
12:43Yeah, yeah, yeah, the evolution of
12:44Yeah, yeah, man
12:45I felt like I kind of wanted that
12:46With like Shane's ease and like
12:48Physically
12:49De-stressing
12:50So like I was trying in the earlier episodes
12:52To hold it a little bit more in that posture
12:55Yeah, yeah, yeah
12:55What a comparison, I love that
12:56And then like as he
12:57He gets more accepted of himself
12:59And he grows some more assurance
13:00Outside of the hockey world
13:02He kind of gets a little bit more pulled back
13:05Yeah
13:05Guys, thank you so much for joining
13:07Congrats on everything
13:08And yeah, thank you guys for watching
13:10Thank you
13:13Thank you
13:13Thank you
13:14Thank you
13:14Thank you
13:17Thank you
13:17Thank you
13:18Thank you
13:19Thank you
13:24Thank you
13:25You
