More than 160-thousand Australians with disabilities are expected to be kicked-off the Ndis under sweeping changes, designed to rein-in ballooning costs and restore confidence in the scheme. The health minister unveiled the savings plan today including a crackdown on what he's called the "fraudsters and crooks", using the scheme as an a-t-m.

00:01With more, our national disability affairs reporter Naz Campanella joins us.
00:06Naz, how are people in the community and the disability sector reacting to these changes?
00:13Well Jeremy, it will be a fairly sleepless and anxious evening for many in the community tonight.
00:19Many say they are gutted at the idea of eligibility tightening using standardised assessments
00:25because they say disability simply is not standard.
00:29Now they are also asking critical questions about who will be moved off the scheme, when
00:34and what alternative supports will be in place.
00:38Now the peak body for providers has also weighed in,
00:41welcoming the move towards mandatory registration and also increased monitoring of payments.
00:47Guardrails, they say, should have been in place all along.
00:51Now Jeremy, it is safe to say the consensus across the sector and community broadly tonight
00:56is that the NDIS must remain in place for future generations
01:00and the critical thing now is consultation and transparency to ensure nobody is left behind.
