00:00:24Welcome to the jungles of Borneo and Sumatra.
00:00:30When explorers first came here, they found a lot of surprises in the forest.
00:00:36Crawly surprises, leafy surprises, colorful pointy nose surprises.
00:00:44Wow, that is surprising.
00:00:50There were new and astonishing things everywhere, but high above them, like
00:00:59really high, was the most surprising and mysterious thing of all.
00:01:07Creatures they could only hear and occasionally glimpse.
00:01:16They asked the locals, who said the treetops were home to forest people.
00:01:21Orang Lutan in their language, secretive loners who hid themselves away to avoid being put
00:01:34to work.
00:01:37They were right that close relatives of ours live up here.
00:01:40But wrong about everything else.
00:01:46These treetops are full of big characters who love to hang out and socialize.
00:01:55Mind your manners, buddy.
00:02:04Now I'm the king of the swingers, oh, the jungle VIP.
00:02:09I've reached the top and had to stop and that's what's bothering me.
00:02:13This is the story of a young female, called Inda, who sets out to explore this busy forest
00:02:21for herself.
00:02:23Oh, ooby doo, I wanna be like you.
00:02:27Hop de hooby doo ba.
00:02:29I wanna walk like you.
00:02:30Cheep.
00:02:30Talk like you.
00:02:31Cheep choo.
00:02:33Weebe deebe deebe dee.
00:02:33You'll see the truth.
00:02:35Shoo ba dee doo.
00:02:36An ape like me.
00:02:38Scooby dooby doo be.
00:02:39Can learn to be human too.
00:02:43Hoop dee deebe dee.
00:02:46Hoop dee dee.
00:02:47Hoop dee dee.
00:02:47Hoop dee dee.
00:02:48Hoop dee dee.
00:02:48Hoop dee dee.
00:02:53Inda is nine, a teenager in orangutan years.
00:02:57And unlike the legends, she's a very hard worker.
00:03:03She and her mom, Dion, and her little brother, Bimo, are searching hard for anything they
00:03:09can eat.
00:03:15They like fruit the best, but when there's no fruit around, spiky ratan plants will just
00:03:21have to do.
00:03:23Two-year-old Bimo will give it a shot.
00:03:26The spiky stuff isn't as nice as mom's milk, but he needs to learn what's safe to eat.
00:03:35Inda hasn't had milk for quite a while.
00:03:37But she stayed close to mom for nearly ten years to learn the ways of the forest.
00:03:45And, you know, for the comfort and security of family life.
00:03:50That's just normal for orangutans, who have the longest childhoods in nature.
00:04:07But Inda's learned almost all she can.
00:04:11Oh!
00:04:14She's fine.
00:04:15She's fine.
00:04:17She's fine.
00:04:17She'll make mistakes along the way.
00:04:19But it's better to slip up while mom's around.
00:04:28Her family unit is still strong.
00:04:31But for Inda, everything started to change as soon as her little brother was born.
00:04:46For Inda, nothing was the same after Bimo.
00:04:53Sure, he was adorable beyond words.
00:04:57But suddenly, Bimo seemed to get all the attention.
00:05:03And all Inda could do was watch.
00:05:12Orangutans are pretty helpless when they're born.
00:05:15And that meant mom had to carry little Bimo everywhere.
00:05:21While he just clung to her fur and tried not to fall.
00:05:38Why is he so frustratingly cute?
00:05:48But taking care of a newborn around here is so difficult that from now on,
00:05:53Dion would give Bimo most of her time.
00:06:02Being number two was something that Inda was going to have to get used to.
00:06:28Like all older siblings, Inda has grown to love Bimo.
00:06:33Now that he's old enough to let go of mom for awhile and start to play,
00:06:37he's a lot more fun.
00:06:41Times and places are all in who you share them with.
00:06:49And it's like the point is enjoying who you share it with.
00:07:02Enjoying who you share it with.
00:07:15Enjoying who you share it with.
00:07:34Enjoying who you share it with.
00:07:41Fun times.
00:07:44But not everyone in the neighborhood wants to play nice.
00:07:51As the highest-ranking female around here,
00:07:55Ruby and her son Rafi are the true jungle VIPs,
00:08:00entitled to the first pick of everything,
00:08:05while Dion and her family just get scraps.
00:08:13Only a few trees have fruit remaining, so Ruby can hog them all.
00:08:19She and her son are like royalty.
00:08:25Even little Rafi has the right to fruit before Dion.
00:08:31It's always been this way.
00:08:35It's enough to make a hard forest even harder for Inda.
00:08:43Once this fruit is gone, it's anyone's guess when more will arrive.
00:08:49And when she and her family will finally get a decent meal.
00:09:02Knowing what you're allowed to eat is a learning process.
00:09:06And so is figuring out how to reach it.
00:09:12Unlike most tropical forests, this one doesn't have a continuous canopy.
00:09:20The trees are spaced far apart without branches or vines connecting them.
00:09:27And that makes traveling between them a bit of an obstacle course.
00:09:38You could climb down and walk across the forest floor.
00:09:43But, yeah, I don't think that's such a good idea.
00:09:50Fewer than 400 Sumatran tigers are left in the wild.
00:09:56But it only takes one to eat you.
00:10:02Maybe it wasn't the fear of being put to work that kept the orangutans in the treetops.
00:10:12Traveling over land works fine for some.
00:10:15But the best way to get between trees here is to fly.
00:10:21Or some version of it.
00:10:23Like these Thomas leaf monkeys.
00:10:41Gibbons swing themselves across gaps with their long, strong arms.
00:10:53Oh, very impressive.
00:10:57And then things get super weird.
00:11:06What's this guy gonna do?
00:11:13Whoa.
00:11:15These are the only forests in the world where the snakes can glide.
00:11:22And I, for one, don't want to be standing underneath that thing when it lands.
00:11:34Fortunately, these guys are much more interested in hunting Draco lizards than narrators.
00:11:41But guess what?
00:11:44They can glide too.
00:11:47They can glide too.
00:11:48And can travel even further.
00:11:56Just gotta stick the landing.
00:12:03And it's an 8.7.
00:12:08So, a lot of cool moves out there.
00:12:12But for orangutans, it's a little tougher.
00:12:24Not only are they big and heavy, but the highest branches are unreliable.
00:12:33Not only are they big and heavy, but the most new snails are missing.
00:12:37But I hope they are not going on a ship.
00:12:40And they're not going on a ship.
00:12:55Not only is I'm on the ship.
00:13:02about your weight.
00:13:12Orangutans fall a lot harder than bees,
00:13:15so treetop travel needs to be done right.
00:13:19And it isn't quick to learn.
00:13:23There's the, uh, pole vault.
00:13:29The controlled swing.
00:13:34Whatever that was.
00:13:38And the bridge.
00:13:42A favorite with moms for transporting infants.
00:13:50Those who master the art of treetop travel
00:13:53can take more direct routes,
00:13:57saving time and energy.
00:14:00Although, BMO could be a bit more cooperative.
00:14:12So, where's Inda's dad in all this?
00:14:18Now, I'm the king of the swingers.
00:14:20Oh, the jungle V.I.P.
00:14:22I've reached the top and had to stop and that's what's bothering me.
00:14:27Bintang, the 200-pound dominant male in this area.
00:14:32He has a different way to save energy.
00:14:39His long calls travel miles through the forest.
00:14:43So he doesn't have to.
00:14:47They warn off rival males and attract...
00:14:50adoring females.
00:14:58Keep it up, buddy, she's definitely into it.
00:15:13His dish-shaped face may help direct these calls.
00:15:17But more importantly, he tells other males
00:15:20that he's the king of this area.
00:15:26And if that didn't make it clear enough,
00:15:28he can also spread his macho message
00:15:31by effortlessly pushing over trees.
00:15:42Eh, almost effortlessly.
00:15:59Boom!
00:16:01Letting the rest of the forest know,
00:16:04he's no pushover.
00:16:11Bintang's collateral damage also helps the sun bear.
00:16:18This guy, he could use a little help.
00:16:24He can climb trees, but prefers his food delivered.
00:16:33His thick skin protects him from the stings of angry bees
00:16:36as he searches for their grubs, or even their honey.
00:16:48Hmm, he seems to have given Bintang an idea.
00:16:53Problem is, these aren't bees.
00:16:59They're wasps.
00:17:05And wasps don't make honey.
00:17:12But, hey, they taste okay.
00:17:16A little spicy, but worth a closer look.
00:17:35Yep, definitely no honey.
00:17:39And quite a bit of pain.
00:17:42Some of it self-inflicted.
00:17:52Bintang may be the boss,
00:17:55but he wouldn't know a bad idea if it hit him in the face.
00:18:02Did you learn nothing from your mother, Bintang?
00:18:07Bintang may be the best friend of mine.
00:18:11With the fruit gone, orangutans are spread far and wide,
00:18:15searching for other food.
00:18:18And Inda faces a big decision.
00:18:25She's ready to leave home.
00:18:27But with food so scarce,
00:18:29it's the worst possible time to go.
00:18:39If she doesn't go now,
00:18:40any food the family finds will have to be shared.
00:18:45And her mom is already sharing with BMO.
00:18:54If Inda does go,
00:18:55she'll need to trust herself to find food on her own.
00:19:05In the end, she makes a decision to leave.
00:19:17She won't go far.
00:19:19Just across the valley.
00:19:22But it's an area her mother has never taken her.
00:19:26In the end, she'll be able to find food on her own.
00:19:44About half a mile away,
00:19:47Inda's found a place of her own.
00:19:54But living alone is a big step.
00:20:09Life at her mother's side is all she's ever known.
00:20:13In the end, Dianne has prepared her well.
00:20:21But that was training.
00:20:22And the danger now is very real.
00:20:37Now she's chosen her spot.
00:20:39She needs to get to know her new home
00:20:41and start putting all that training into practice.
00:20:52And for the first time in her life,
00:20:56no one is here to help.
00:21:05In this forest,
00:21:07it's wise to be safely in bed before nightfall.
00:21:14Back with the family,
00:21:16Dianne begins work on tonight's nest.
00:21:19She starts with the foundations,
00:21:22bending and weaving branches to form a base.
00:21:26Her apprentice follows along.
00:21:41Dianne continues to form a base.
00:21:42Come on, Beemo.
00:21:43Every kid needs to learn to make their bed.
00:21:50Next, add a little padding.
00:22:01After the base,
00:22:03the safety rails.
00:22:06Uh, the base, Beemo.
00:22:09We're working on the base.
00:22:22That's not even safe.
00:22:27But as long as Mom's still around,
00:22:29it doesn't matter.
00:22:34He can always climb in with her.
00:22:38Better to do that
00:22:39than wake up on the forest floor.
00:22:49Of course,
00:22:51Mom's made one big enough for two.
00:23:04Dianne and Beemo aren't the only ones
00:23:06getting tucked in for the night.
00:23:11Nearby,
00:23:12Inda is building the first nest of her solo life.
00:23:16She started learning at Beemo's age.
00:23:20But this is the first time without supervision.
00:23:38Uh-huh.
00:23:39That's the base done.
00:23:42And the padding added.
00:23:46Yup.
00:23:47Safety rails on the sides.
00:23:53Hey.
00:23:54Hey, that's not bad.
00:23:55Follow, follow the sun.
00:24:01Which way the wind glows.
00:24:05When this day is done.
00:24:09Ruby's nest site is fit for a queen.
00:24:14Breathe in the air.
00:24:17Rafi likes the high life.
00:24:19They can't sleep there.
00:24:22He's as reluctant to go to bed as most kids.
00:24:27Rafi.
00:24:35Brand new moon and brand new sun.
00:24:40A comfy nest up here is a bare necessity.
00:24:50I don't know, though.
00:24:52That does not look comfy.
00:24:54Or even big enough.
00:25:02Sleep tight, Bintang.
00:25:04Sleep tight.
00:25:05Follow.
00:25:08Follow the sun.
00:25:11Which way the wind glows.
00:25:15When this day is done.
00:25:33As night falls,
00:25:36new creatures stir.
00:25:41And if those early explorers found daytime animals surprising,
00:25:45boy, they must have been amazed by what came out at night.
00:25:54Moon moths with long tails.
00:25:59Whip scorpions that spray vinegar.
00:26:05And giant-eyed tree geckos.
00:26:11Nothing here is quite what you expect.
00:26:17And this guy, a frog that can glide.
00:26:31flying frogs.
00:26:33Did not see that coming.
00:26:40Don't worry, Inda.
00:26:41They're not dangerous.
00:26:46They're not dangerous.
00:26:50The slow loris.
00:26:53A nocturnal relative of a monkey.
00:26:56And the world's only venomous primate.
00:27:00A nocturnal relative of a monkey.
00:27:01Their poison is a helpful defense.
00:27:05As the loris is slow by name.
00:27:08And slow by nature.
00:27:12Although, male lorises can expect a quick reaction if they approach females with young.
00:27:41The most magical dawn chorus in nature is led by the haunting calls of the sun.
00:27:48of gibbons no wonder there were legends that those in the treetops could speak
00:28:22so
00:28:31so
00:28:59Sound travels further through the heavy mist.
00:29:03It's a chance for Bintang to make himself heard.
00:29:14But today, someone new is listening in, an outsider looking for a new kingdom.
00:29:26Although he is several miles away, Bintang's long call reveals his current location and
00:29:33his travel plans for the day.
00:29:44The newcomer will sneak in quietly.
00:29:49If he can surprise Bintang, it may give him the upper hand.
00:30:04Because fruit is scarce, Dion focuses on insects.
00:30:13The technique, annoy the ants until they bite hold of your fur.
00:30:19Transfer them to your mouth, then collect a lively snack.
00:30:27Beemo pulls the other side of the ants' nest clean off.
00:30:30That'll really annoy them.
00:30:42Beemo might regret that.
00:30:45His young skin is thinner than Mom's, and ants bite.
00:30:51Ouch!
00:30:52The entrance to the nest is where the guardian ants with the biggest jaws are gathering.
00:30:59Maybe he'll try higher up.
00:31:02If he can find some worker ants, their jaws are smaller.
00:31:13There you go.
00:31:15Much less painful.
00:31:17Yep.
00:31:18He'll remember that next time.
00:31:27Who knew hairy ants were so helpful?
00:31:36If you can't get your hands on insects, one food that can always be found is edible palms.
00:31:43Trouble is, they only grow on the forest floor.
00:31:59Inda remembers collecting them with Dion.
00:32:04But Dion knew only to search where the jungle was more open.
00:32:08And for good reason.
00:32:11And for good reason.
00:32:13For good reason.
00:32:35For good reason.
00:32:59So...
00:33:00No...
00:33:01No...
00:33:02No...
00:33:02No...
00:33:03No...
00:33:04No.
00:34:02And that's as close to a tiger
00:34:04as Inda ever wants to get.
00:34:14There's been little to eat for months,
00:34:16but rain is just what the forest needs to produce fruit
00:34:21and bring an end to this barren period.
00:34:25For BMO and Dion, the building clouds are good news.
00:34:38An end to their hunger is on its way.
00:34:46But for now, let's just try to stay dry.
00:34:53When it's not always raining,
00:34:57there'll be days like this.
00:34:59When there's no one complaining,
00:35:02there'll be days like this.
00:35:04Everything falls into place
00:35:06like the flick of a switch.
00:35:10Well, my mama told me,
00:35:12there'll be days like this.
00:35:39Some cope with the storm by making umbrellas.
00:35:42And if the rain keeps falling,
00:35:44you can always just go back to bed.
00:35:51And if you can't make an umbrella,
00:35:53well, then, you just have to grin and bear it.
00:35:57Oh, my mama told me
00:35:58there'll be days like this.
00:36:01Oh, my mama told me
00:36:03there'll be days like this.
00:36:06Oh, my mama told me
00:36:09there'll be days like this.
00:36:11Oh, my mama told me
00:36:14there'll be days like this.
00:36:35When it finally stops raining, Bintang can hear something approaching.
00:36:52The outsider. He's used the cover of the storm to enter Bintang's area and check out his territory.
00:37:03Bintang must rise to the challenge.
00:37:08Adult males are so powerful that close combat can be fatal. It's avoided if possible.
00:37:22But if Bintang doesn't act now, he could lose his kingdom.
00:37:39Bintang pushes the outsider lower.
00:37:46But the ground is the last place either male wants to be.
00:37:49What?
00:37:55Whoa!
00:37:57Whoa!
00:37:59Whoa!
00:38:01Whoa!
00:38:03Whoa!
00:38:04Whoa!
00:38:06Whoa!
00:38:08Whoa!
00:38:12Whoa!
00:38:13And after a fierce fight, Bintang has driven the outsider off.
00:38:18He'll think twice before returning.
00:38:21Oh.
00:38:22Oh.
00:38:22Oh.
00:38:39Toot.
00:38:39floor. Easy for the VIPs to hog till empty.
00:38:51Beemo's thirsty, but is made to wait, while his mom risks going down to the
00:38:58stream.
00:39:08The water is cool and delicious, but far too dangerous for Beemo to reach.
00:39:19Rafi shares Ruby's water from a high tree hole, well away from tigers.
00:39:30Queen Ruby struggles with sharing, even with her son.
00:39:50Inda also wants a drink, but is still in a dangerous area where visibility is poor.
00:39:59And the undergrowth could be hiding predators.
00:40:19oooh.
00:40:31The tiger doesn't sound nearby.
00:40:41She's got time for a quick drink.
00:40:46If that's the only tiger.
00:41:07Phew, that ought to keep her going a bit longer.
00:41:14Looks like she's starting to get the hang of solo life.
00:41:22The change of condition since the storm has brought a new male into the area.
00:41:37This is Harto.
00:41:40He doesn't have the big cheeks like some of the other males.
00:41:44And he's a little itchy and, oof, I can't imagine that breath is great.
00:41:57But he is able to father young and he's come to the area to look for a mate.
00:42:10Dion is the right age for him.
00:42:13He'd better make a good first impression.
00:42:35And right now, he's doing the orangutan equivalent of stumbling across the dance floor
00:42:44and spilling his drink all over her.
00:42:55For Dion, Harto could be an intimidating sight.
00:42:59Some males can be quite aggressive.
00:43:10Beemo's instinct is to protect his mom.
00:43:14But Harto's not being rough.
00:43:16He just wants to find out if Dion is ready to conceive again.
00:43:35He can tell she's not fertile.
00:43:38And unlikely to be while Beemo's so young.
00:43:49Harto will just need to wait a few years for an opportunity.
00:43:54But he's okay with playing the long game.
00:43:58And it wasn't a definite no from Dion.
00:44:10Pitcher plants combine the rainwater with digestive juices,
00:44:14which turn any insects that fall in to bug soup.
00:44:20A simple recipe I won't be creating at home.
00:44:26But Harto could get on board with a protein shake.
00:44:31He's decided to stick around for a while.
00:44:34And if he wants to impress Dion,
00:44:38a little bulk wouldn't hurt.
00:44:53For Inda, the neighborhood newcomer is a chance to pick up new tricks.
00:44:58Hmm, she hadn't thought of getting water this way.
00:45:04It's smart and safer than visiting a stream.
00:45:12She'll give it a shot.
00:45:14But if Harto leaves her any,
00:45:19that's a whole lot of orangutan to hydrate.
00:45:34Time to see what Harto has left her.
00:45:41Yeah, these drinks look a little past their sell by date.
00:45:45But she can still test the idea.
00:45:56It works.
00:45:58If you've got the brains to learn from others,
00:46:01the forest is one big classroom.
00:46:07Even the sun bear has something to offer.
00:46:15If there's honey around,
00:46:17you can count on a bear to find it.
00:46:22It's not a bear.
00:46:31His long claws are great for ripping open the entrance to beehives.
00:46:40inda has followed him to a bunch of trees with hives inside
00:46:44but with no claws how's she gonna get in
00:46:55she breaks off a twig and starts to shave it
00:47:13incredibly she's crafted a tool that can go deep inside the tree
00:47:17and reach be eggs and honey that even the bear's claw couldn't get
00:47:23inda found honey by following a bear
00:47:26but she learned how to collect it from her own kind
00:47:40orangutans in different areas pass on different skills to one another
00:47:45like culture in people
00:47:48as a result they can use nearly 30 types of tools
00:47:55impressive
00:48:14whether you're after honey or ants
00:48:19there's a knack for everything in this forest
00:48:22you just need someone to show you
00:48:28inda has learned a lot from her mom
00:48:31but now needs new sources of inspiration
00:48:38and here comes hardo again
00:48:40still in the area
00:48:45and now that inda's seen one of his clever workarounds
00:48:48she knows he's worth watching
00:48:53dion is also on hardo's trail
00:48:55following him from a distance
00:48:59she's got a crush on him
00:49:11incredibly hardo has caught a slow loris
00:49:14avoiding its venomous bite
00:49:23orangutans may be slow
00:49:24but the loris was, well, slower
00:49:30inda's first to arrive
00:49:32and she wants to try some
00:49:33but hardo is not keen on sharing
00:49:39and now dion has showed up too
00:49:45cutting in front of your daughter isn't very nice
00:49:47but loris are a rare delicacy
00:49:50and as dion's being wooed by hardo
00:49:54she'll expect a gift
00:50:00this is hardo's chance to win her over
00:50:08but hardo appears to be putting lunch
00:50:12ahead of love
00:50:16oh, he's not sharing with dion
00:50:18at all
00:50:19look at him
00:50:25hardo, hardo, you're blowing it
00:50:29you don't bring chocolates on a date
00:50:32then eat them yourself, bud
00:50:40this lady isn't hard to read
00:50:43she wants some loris
00:50:45will you just give her some loris
00:50:52let's hope bimo isn't going to learn
00:50:54his pick-up skills from hardo
00:51:06come on, man, this is your last shot
00:51:19oh, dude
00:51:28oh, this is just awkward
00:51:31hardo has forgotten his manners completely
00:51:36bimo, when the time comes for romance
00:51:39this is a lesson in how not to do it
00:51:45whatever is future
00:51:47it's clear dion ain't going to be a part of it
00:51:53but love isn't the only challenge for hardo
00:51:57his clowning around has alerted someone else
00:52:07and bintang won't see the funny side
00:52:17the big guy heard the commotion from the loris party
00:52:20and hardo better not be around when he gets there
00:52:29the noise was definitely coming from this area
00:52:38if hardo's smart, he'll get out quick
00:52:42hardo's not done yet
00:52:44the dope shakes a branch to intimidate bintang
00:52:55bintang seems relaxed
00:52:57well, now that he's seeing it's just hardo
00:52:59and not the outsider
00:53:01he's not too bothered
00:53:06hardo can posture all he likes
00:53:09everyone knows who the real big man is around here
00:53:18whatever man
00:53:24hardo finally gets the message
00:53:26and leaves
00:53:53for inda
00:53:54hardo's visit and the gathering around the loris
00:53:57have an unexpected upside
00:54:02they brought her family back together
00:54:07it's a great chance to catch up with her favorite little brother
00:54:22kindred souls
00:54:24yours and mine
00:54:26tethered together with the ties of bite
00:54:30i got you and you got me
00:54:34that's the way you'll always be
00:54:39two of a kind
00:54:41one and the same
00:54:43shoulder to shoulder through sunshine and rain
00:54:47life is lighter than a feather
00:55:15inda's been missing bemo so this is the perfect opportunity for some quality time together
00:55:22it's as though they've never been apart
00:55:25when we're together we got a bond that we'll never break
00:55:31you will always have each other make no mistake
00:55:36life is lighter than a feather when we're together oh oh
00:55:43when we're together oh oh oh it's lighter than a feather oh oh oh
00:55:52when we're together together oh oh oh
00:55:59all those legends about orangutans being loners maybe they got it wrong
00:56:03because reunions like this look like the total opposite
00:56:06a love of fun friendship and family we can all relate to
00:56:22but it can't last forever
00:56:28and as inda returns to life alone
00:56:32she feels the absence of her family more than ever
00:56:45but could her need for companionship
00:56:48be answered by someone she's never met before
00:56:54zaki has entered the area
00:56:59a young male who's also just left his family
00:57:06just like inda he's new to solo life and could use a friend
00:57:23inda knows the area better than zaki as a female she's near where she grew up
00:57:31young males travel further from their mothers when leaving home
00:57:40so zaki has the most to gain from a friendship
00:57:48zaki i said friendship come on buddy
00:57:54the recent food shortage seems to have left everyone reluctant to share
00:58:02the pair have found some termites
00:58:04they're not exactly loris but zaki still doesn't want inda to have any
00:58:12he thinks the insects ought to be his
00:58:25it would seem all male orangutans have a bit of a sharing problem
00:58:33but inda's no pushover
00:58:40she's pretty determined to get her share
00:58:46come on you two what would your parents say
00:58:55oh that is a good bit
00:59:01how about letting in to have just a little
00:59:03how about letting in to have just a little
00:59:09hey it's not too late to do the right thing
00:59:17atta boy
00:59:21it may be just the leftovers
00:59:23but hey it's a start
00:59:28with inda's local knowledge and zaki's strength
00:59:31they do better teaming up
00:59:36especially if they hope to tackle the opportunity that's coming their way
00:59:46after the rain the cheminang is the first tree to bear fruit
00:59:51but it's not exactly convenience food
00:59:56these pods are dispersed by water
00:59:59not animals
01:00:00so unlike most fruits
01:00:02they're designed to be hard to eat
01:00:12it's no problem for big guy bintang
01:00:15he and trees have history
01:00:17and his powerful jaws are more than a match for the tough outer casing
01:00:26however the itchy hairs inside are a different matter
01:00:29they're annoying no matter how big you are
01:00:42thankfully the seeds hidden within are nutritious
01:00:46if not exactly delicious
01:01:03as the cases ripen a split forms
01:01:06teasing a small window into the fruit
01:01:12dion has a method for these
01:01:15once split the fruit can be pried slightly wider
01:01:19then a stick can be used as a probe
01:01:21to get beyond those annoying hairs
01:01:23and reach the seeds inside
01:01:31bimo is watching and learning
01:01:34but won't be able to do this for at least five years
01:01:44dion's a master with tools
01:01:47unlike the highborn females
01:01:49she needs every survival trick possible to make a living
01:01:54the technique is very smart
01:01:57and not something orangutans arriving from other areas know how to do
01:02:03yep, looking at you, Zaki
01:02:10no, buddy, you'll bust a tooth
01:02:13only bintang can break them that way
01:02:26but Inda knows mom's secret
01:02:39she shows her new friend the technique
01:02:45if you don't want a mouthful of prickles
01:02:47this is the way to do it
01:02:58Zaki studies her every move
01:03:07he seems impressed
01:03:17really impressed
01:03:24maybe he underestimated her
01:03:35Inda's skill with the chimining fruit
01:03:38is a turning point for Zaki's behavior towards her
01:03:44a gentler, more respectful air comes over him
01:03:51and when I see your smiling face
01:03:54I want to dance and sing and play
01:03:57won't you be my best friend
01:03:59stay with me till the very end
01:04:02over the coming months
01:04:04the two become inseparable
01:04:08when I see an apple tree
01:04:10when I see an apple tree
01:04:10I pick one for you and one for me
01:04:13they travel together
01:04:14watch each other's backs
01:04:17and combine their brains to solve problems
01:04:22because that's what friends are all about
01:04:26and when I see your smiling face
01:04:29I want to laugh and sing and play
01:04:32won't you be my best friend
01:04:35stay with me till the very end
01:04:46won't you be my best friend
01:04:48stay with me till the very end
01:04:57won't you be my best friend
01:05:00stay with me till the very end
01:05:08The Cheminang don't last long.
01:05:14Soon, everyone is once again short of food, even Queen Ruby and Rafi.
01:05:23High status means nothing when there's nothing to divide up.
01:05:41The smaller the insects, the longer it takes to collect them.
01:05:50There is now less food than ever.
01:05:58There are no easy meals for anyone.
01:06:07Bintang resorts to bark.
01:06:10Plenty of fiber, but not much else.
01:06:23Indas discovering the sour sap that bleeds from peeled trunks can be edible,
01:06:28but it's a bit gummy and doesn't fill you up.
01:06:36All play and social visits have stopped.
01:06:44Everyone travels as little as possible to conserve energy.
01:06:57Let's go!
01:07:19The hornbills are assigned to Dion.
01:07:25Lots of birds heading in the same direction can only mean one thing.
01:07:30The unripe fruit in a fig tree that she checked two weeks ago is finally ripe.
01:07:42Birds are always the first to discover fruit.
01:07:46By following them, Dion can beat her orangutan rivals to food.
01:08:14Inda is next to arrive.
01:08:16She learned about the birds from her mother.
01:08:18Their lowly status has forced both to live by their wits and survive the challenges of
01:08:26this great forest.
01:08:40All the animals will know about this tree soon, if they've been paying attention.
01:08:52But Dion, BMO, and Inda have the advantage of a head start.
01:08:58And we'll make the most of it before the royals come along and hog it all.
01:09:06The fruit is perfect.
01:09:26Uh-oh.
01:09:27Here comes Ruby and Rafi.
01:09:33They usually take everything for themselves.
01:09:41Dion backs off, expecting to be chased out.
01:09:53But Inda waits a bit.
01:09:58Ruby seems relaxed.
01:10:10With enough food for everyone, there's no reason to quarrel.
01:10:16The tree is huge and it's stuffed with fruit.
01:10:22There's plenty for all orangutans, whatever their status.
01:10:41Rafi eyes BMO.
01:10:44They aren't usually allowed this close to each other.
01:10:47But their parents don't seem to be stopping them.
01:10:51So perhaps this is an opportunity to make a friend.
01:11:01These past months have been a lonely time for everyone.
01:11:07Dion is still cautious.
01:11:09She rarely gets this close to Ruby without trouble.
01:11:19It's the first time the boys have been allowed to play together.
01:11:24It's a special moment for both of them.
01:11:35DEMO has always been afraid of Ruby.
01:11:39But the fruit has changed everything.
01:11:49It's dissolved old rivalries and brought everyone together.
01:11:59It's a day neither boy will forget, at least for a little while.
01:12:07The fruit is so good, even Bintang takes a break from a hard day of tree demolition
01:12:13and comes to join the party.
01:12:24The good times are finally back.
01:12:31And this time, no one is left out.
01:12:35You know what?
01:12:37It looks a lot like a community.
01:12:42Orangutans may spend a lot of time spread out around the forest, but all it takes is a fruit feast
01:12:49to bring everyone together.
01:12:53Now they can show their true natures.
01:12:56They are social animals at heart.
01:13:21Whoopsy-daisy.
01:13:24The boys have begun a friendship that may last years.
01:13:28At least until they leave their mothers when they're 9 or 10 and venture out into the forest
01:13:35in search of their own kingdoms, which could be many miles apart.
01:13:47Eventually, it's time for Dion to leave.
01:13:51She has to go look for more fruit to pack on the pounds before supplies run out.
01:13:56And Ruby's mood changes.
01:14:04And it means BMO must leave too.
01:14:19Rafi doesn't want the play to end.
01:14:23Being a sociable ape in a forest that rarely allows it can be tough.
01:14:42Ruby seemed to enjoy her son having fun and making a friend.
01:14:45Who knows?
01:14:47Perhaps she'll allow Dion's family closer more often.
01:14:55As for Inda?
01:15:00Sure, she still slips up once in a while.
01:15:03But now, she's got Zaki to help catch her when she falls.
01:15:09With more food around, the two of them can travel more and get to know their forest better.
01:15:16They can also concentrate on their relationship.
01:15:20And the pair spend every moment they can together.
01:15:31There are even signs this is becoming more than friendship.
01:15:38Who knows?
01:15:40Perhaps Zaki will one day father Inda's young.
01:15:45If they have his strength and her skills, they should have a bright future.
01:15:52There's nothing I'd say but capture the day I found you roaming.
01:15:57I knew this could be an end to the dream I was living alone in.
01:16:01So I followed my heart to make a new start and dream together.
01:16:06New chances to climb, new worlds to find with each other forever.
01:16:11And the days feel good.
01:16:13Since those early explorers first glimpsed our red cousins, we've learned so much about them.
01:16:21They're nothing like the solitary loners we once thought they were.
01:16:25And their society and culture are richer than we ever imagined.
01:16:32As long as these magnificent forests remain, so will the orangutan.
01:16:38Wild and free and full of surprises.
01:16:43And now we're living our best life.
01:16:47Cause now we're living our best life.
01:16:52Oh yeah, we're living our best life.
01:16:57And the days feel good.
01:17:00I love you.
01:17:27We're living our best life.
01:17:30I got you and you got me
01:17:34And that's the way it'll always be
01:17:38Two of a kind, one in the same
01:17:43Shoulder to shoulder through sunshine and rain
01:17:47Life was lighter than a feather
01:17:50When we're together
01:17:54When we're together
01:17:57It's lighter than a feather
01:18:01When we're together
01:18:06Together
01:18:10Ooh
01:18:12Ooh
01:18:14Ooh
01:18:16Ooh
01:18:17Ooh
01:18:20Ooh
01:18:24Ooh
01:18:27Ooh
01:18:28Ooh
01:18:29Ooh
01:18:29Ooh
01:18:29Oh, my God.
01:19:26Oh, my God.
01:19:29Oh, my God.
01:19:59Oh, my God.
01:20:54Oh, my God.
01:21:11Oh, my God.
