Police say more evidence from shops is needed to improve prosecutions for shoplifting.
Retail groups say trust in the system remains low despite recent improvements in enforcement.

00:10The plea comes as more than 90,000 shoplifting offences were reported in the year ending March 2026, a slight
00:18fall of 3.7% compared with the previous year.
00:22Police say retailers only provide CCTV in around 20% of cases, meaning most investigations are closed early.
00:30Deputy Commissioner Matt Dukes says the force is determined to secure consequences for prolific and violent offenders and has increased
00:38arrests by nearly 50% in the last year.
00:41Retailers say confidence and trust remain low still.
