Police say better evidence sharing could help secure more prosecutions as thousands of shoplifting offences continue to be reported across London. Retailers say they need more confidence that reporting crime leads to action.

00:01Retailers are being urged to share more CCTV and evidence with police to help target shoplifters in the capital.
00:07The deputy head of the Metropolitan Police has said that better cooperation is needed to tackle repeat and violent offenders.
00:15In the year to March 2026, more than 90,000 shoplifting offences were reported, a slight fall of 3.7%.
00:24However, officers say CCTV was provided in only one in five cases, meaning most investigations were closed early.
00:32Deputy Commissioner Matt Dukes says the force is determined to ensure consequences for prolific and aggressive offenders.
00:39Arrests have risen by nearly 50% over the past year in London.
