ACT Policing has started Operation Retail which will see more police in shopping centres.

00:00Since this time last year, shoplifting incidents in the ACT have increased by 38%
00:15and each one of these incidents drives up the cost of goods for our community members.
00:20We are aware that retail theft and antisocial behaviour at shops is a continuing issue
00:26both for merchants, their staff and the wider community.
00:29People can expect to see increased patrols, police working with retailers and security within those precincts
00:38and joint operations with loss prevention officers.
00:42While some thefts are opportunistic, we are seeing increasing activity from organised groups and networks
00:49targeting our shopping centres inside the ACT.
00:52We have groups that may target, they may come into Canberra, into the ACT,
00:56from interstate, hit a certain shopping centre or group of shops
01:00and take those stolen goods outside of the ACT.
